    Description: A modelling of the observed macroseismic intensity of historical and instrumental earthquakes in southern Spain is proposed, with the aim of determining the macroseismic parameters for seismic hazard evaluation in a region in which the characterization of intensity distribution of seismic events shows different levels of difficulty referable to the complex faults system of the area in study. The adopted procedure allows an analytical determination of epicenters and principal attenuation directions of earthquakes with a double level of verification with reference to the maximum shaking area and structural lineaments of the region, respectively. The analyses, carried out on a suitable number of events, highlight, therefore, some elements for a preliminary characterization of a seismic zonation on the basis of the consistency between seismic intensity distribution of earthquakes and corresponding structural framework.

    Description: Most of the ancient town of Tindari (NE, Sicily) was settled on a plateau the most surficial layer of which was made of unconsolidated material. Ongoing excavations at the archaeological site at Tindari uncovered a large portion of the decumanus which suffered deformations preliminarily assigned to coseismic effects. An analysis of the local dynamic response through the simulation of strong seismic shaking to the bedrock and modelling of spectral ratios of the bedrock-soft soil was carried out to verify the susceptibility of superficial terrains of the promontory to coseismic deformations. To perform this simulation the finite element method (FEM) was used. Four accelerometric recordings of three earthquakes of medium-high magnitude, recorded on rocky sites, were chosen to simulate the seismic shaking, using a constitutive law for the materials composing the promontory layers both of linear-elastic type and of elastoplastic type. The analysis of the linear-elastic field allowed the definition of the frequencies for which the spectral ratios of the accelerations recorded the highest amplifications; in particular the frequency range 31.5–37.2 Hz can be combined with deformation of the paved floor of the decumanus. The analysis in the elastoplastic field highlighted the zones of promontory more susceptible to suffer plasticization process. The results show that the topmost layer of the decumanus is the most susceptible to suffer plasticization. Therefore, the performed analysis lends greater support to the hypothesis that the deformations were produced by seismic shaking.

    Description: During the cruise of the Italian research vessel URANIA on August 2007, a new tsunami detector was successfully deployed at 3200 b. s. l. in the Gulf of Cadiz, Portugal. The new detector is installed on board the multi-parameter abyssal observatory GEOSTAR. This activity is a task of NEAREST EC Project (http://nearest.bo.ismar.cnr.it/ ). Among other tasks, the NEAREST project will produce and test the basic parts of an operational prototype of a near field tsunami warning system. The warning system includes an onshore warning centre based on the seismic and tide gauges monitoring networks which are already operating in the area of Gulf of Cadiz and connected in real time with many warning receiving shore stations, a buoy equipped with meteostation and two way acoustic and satellite links, and the tsunami detector installed on board GEOSTAR. The warning centre is in charge of collecting, integrating, and evaluating data recorded at sea. In the observatory at the sea bottom, data are recorded and processed by the tsunami detector which includes a pressure sensor, a seismometer and two accelerometers. The observatory communicates acoustically with a surface buoy in two-way mode. The buoy is equipped with meteo station and GPS and it is connected to the shore station via satellite dual-link. The prototype is designed to operate in tsunami generation areas for detection-warning purpose as well as for scientific measurements during long term monitoring. The pressure data are processed in real time on the sea floor observatory by a tsunami detection algorithm able to detect small tsunami waves, less than one centimetre, in a very noisy environment. At the same time the seismic data are analysed using a STA/LTA algorithm. The tsunami detector sends a near real time automatic alert message when a seismic or a pressure signal exceeds a selectable threshold indicating a strong local earthquake or a tsunami wave event. After the detection of an event, the seafloor observatory will start sending updated pressure data to the shore station. Our objective is to combine a novel approach to the tsunami warning problem, with a study of the coupling between the water column perturbations and sea floor motion, together with the long term monitoring of geophysical, geochemical and oceanographic parameters.

    Description: The Educational & Outreach Group (E&O Group) of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) designed a portable museum to bring on the road educational activities focused on seismology, seismic hazard and Earth science. This project was developed for the first edition of the Science Festival organized in Genoa, Italy, in 2003. The museum has been mainly focused to school students of all ages and explains the main topics of geophysics through posters, movie and slide presentations, and exciting interactive experiments. This new INGV museum has been remarkably successful, being visited by more than 8,000 children and adults during the 10 days of the Science Festival. It is now installed at the INGV headquarters in Rome and represents the main attraction during the visits of the schools all year round.

    Description: An anisotropic attenuation law, based on an anisotropic characterization of intensity distribution for seismogenic zones, is proposed. This approach, that distinguishes itself for its consistency to the observed data, initially reconfigured by filtering procedures, is particularly suitable for seismic hazard evaluation.

    Description: For the seismic hazard evaluation of the region including the southern Calabro- Peloritanian Arc and southeastern Sicily, the determination of the macroseismic virtual intensity distributions has been carried out, characteristic of the seismogenic zones that fall within the area in study, starting with the structural framework of the region and from the analysis of the observed intensity effected through suitable filters. The macroseismic parameters, derived from such virtual distributions and used for seismic hazard evaluation, are not only a reference for eventual subsequently deeper knowledge referable to the need for a better characterization of the reference modelling, but distinguish themselves as an essential instrument for the definition of seismic hazard scenarios correlated to seismic events that take place in single seismogenic zones.
