    Description: One of the principal reasons why speleothems are recognised as important palaeoclimate archives is their suitability for accurate and precise uranium-series (U-series) age determination. Sampling speleothem sections for U-series dating is straightforward in most cases because visible growth layers are preserved. However, this is not always the case, and here we describe a sampling strategy whereby growth layers are resolved from trace-element images produced by laser-ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). We apply this method to a section of an Italian subaqueous speleothem (CD3) that lacks persistent visible growth layering. Trace-element imaging revealed growth layers that are strongly non-planar in their geometry owing to the speleothem's pronounced euhedral crystal terminations. The most prominent trace-element layers were first digitized as x, y vector contours. We then interpolated these in the growth-axis direction to generate a series of contour lines at ∼250-μm increments. The coordinates of these contours were used to guide the sampling via a computerised micromilling lathe. This produced a total of 22 samples for U-series dating by multi-collector ICP-MS. The dating results returned ages in correct stratigraphic order within error. Close inspection of the U-series data and the derived depth–age model suggests that the main source of model-age uncertainty is unrelated to the contour sampling but instead more associated with how closely spaced the model ages are in time, i.e. the model age density. Comparisons between stable oxygen and carbon isotope profiles derived from aliquots of the dating samples and two other stable isotope profiles from CD3 spanning the same time period compare very favourably. Taken together, this suggests that our trace-element contouring method provides a reliable means for extracting samples for dating (and other geochemical analyses), and can be applied to similar speleothems lacking visible growth layering.

    Description: Methane plays an important role in the Earth’s atmospheric chemistry and radiative balance being the second most important greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide. Methane is released to the atmosphere by a wide number of sources, both natural and anthropogenic, with the latter being twice as large as the former (IPCC, 2007). It has recently been established that significant amounts of geological methane, produced within the Earth’s crust, are currently released naturally into the atmosphere (Etiope, 2004). Active or recent volcanic/geothermal areas represent one of these sources of geological methane. But due to the fact that methane flux measurements are laboratory intensive, very few data have been collected until now and the contribution of this source has been generally indirectly estimated (Etiope et al., 2007). The Greek territory is geodynamically very active and has many volcanic and geothermal areas. Here we report on methane flux measurements made at two volcanic/geothermal systems along the South Aegean volcanic arc: Sousaki and Nisyros. The former is an extinct volcanic area of Plio-Pleistocene age hosting nowadays a low enthalpy geothermal field. The latter is a currently quiescent active volcanic system with strong fumarolic activity due to the presence of a high enthalpy geothermal system. Both systems have gas manifestations that emit significant amounts of hydrothermal methane and display important diffuse carbon dioxide emissions from the soils. New data on methane isotopic composition and higher hydrocarbon contents point to an abiogenic origin of the hydrothermal methane in the studied systems. Measured methane flux values range from –48 to 29,000 (38 sites) and from –20 to 1100 mg/mˆ2/d (35 sites) at Sousaki and Nisyros respectively. At Sousaki measurement sites covered almost all the degassing area and the diffuse methane output can be estimated in about 20 t/a from a surface of about 10,000 mˆ2. At Nisyros measurements covered the Stephanos and Kaminakia areas, which represent only a part of the entire degassing area. The two areas show very different methane degassing pattern with latter showing much higher flux values. Methane output can be estimated in about 0.25 t/a from an area of about 30,000 mˆ2 at Stephanos and about 1 t/a from an area of about 20,000 mˆ2 at Kaminakia. The total output from the entire geothermal system of Nisyros probably should not exceed 2 t/a.

    Description: A biomonitoring survey, above tree line level, using two endemic species (Senecio aethnensis and Rumex aethnensis) was performed on Mt. Etna, in order to evaluate the dispersion and the impact of volcanic atmospheric emissions. Samples of leaves were collected in summer 2008 from 30 sites in the upper part of the volcano (1500- 3000 m a.s.l). Acid digestion of samples was carried out with a microwave oven, and 44 elements were analyzed by using plasma spectrometry (ICP-MS and ICP-OES). The highest concentrations of all investigated elements were found in the samples collected closest to the degassing craters, and in the downwind sector, confirming that the eastern flank of Mt. Etna is the most impacted by volcanic emissions. Leaves collected along two radial transects from the active vents on the eastern flank, highlight that the levels of metals decrease one or two orders of magnitude with increasing distance from the source. This variability is higher for volatile elements (As, Bi, Cd, Cs, Pb, Sb, Tl) than for more refractory elements (Al, Ba, Sc, Si, Sr, Th, U). The two different species of plants do not show significant differences in the bioaccumulation of most of the analyzed elements, except for lanthanides, which are systematically enriched in Rumex leaves. The high concentrations of many toxic elements in the leaves allow us to consider these plants as highly tolerant species to the volcanic emissions, and suitable for biomonitoring researches in the Mt. Etna area.

    Description: This paper presents the preliminary results of a biomonitoring study based on the use of moss bags exposed at 24 sites on Etna volcano. Sphagnum mosses were used to study bioaccumulation originating from atmospheric deposition, by measuring the tissue contents of major and a large suite of trace elements. Elements, such as Tl, Bi, As, Se, Cu and Cd, display high concentrations in the exposed samples close to the active vents. This study confirms the effectiveness of the moss bags technique also in active volcanic areas.

    Description: The Florina basin, being the main commercial source of CO2 in Greece, represents a good natural analogue for the study of the impact of geologic carbon storage. It is part of a NNW-SSE trending graben filled with ~600 m Plio-Pleistocene fluvial and lacustrine deposits. The area is characterized by the upflow of great quantities of geogenic CO2 probably associated to presently extinct Quaternary volcanic activity. The gas originates mainly from crustal sources but has also a minor (~10%) mantle contribution. This strong upflow of nearly pure CO2 can be recognized in industrially exploitable gas reservoirs, high pCO2 shallow groundwaters and surface gas manifestations. But the increased CO2 content has a deleterious impact on groundwater quality. Due to the increased aggressiveness of the low-pH CO2-rich waters with respect to the aquifer rocks, EU drinking water limits are exceed for many parameters (e.g. Electric conductivity, pH, Na+, SO42-, F-, Al, B, Ba, Fe, Mn and Ni). Considering the additional impact of widespread agricultural activities, which is recognizable in sometimes elevated NO3- contents, only few of the sampled waters (4 out of 40) could be used for potable purposes. Aquifer waters are also characterized by high REE contents with ΣREE up to ~12 µg/l. Shale-normalized profiles show positive La and Y anomalies and Ce negative anomalies probably indicating a main derivation from iron oxyhydroxide dissolution. The positive Eu anomaly evidences also carbonate dissolution while the enrichment in HREE is probably due to the abundant presence of HCO3-, which increases HREE solubility through complexation. Future developments of carbon capture and storage programs in the nearby sedimentary basin of Ptolemais and Servia have to carefully take in account the possible deterioration of their groundwater resources due to CO2 leaks from the storage reservoirs.

    Description: La Fossa crater on Vulcano Island is quiescent since 1890. Periodically it undergoes “crises” characterized by marked increase of temperature (T), gas output and concentration of magmatic components in the crater fumaroles (T may exceed 600 °C). During these crises, which so far did not lead to any eruptive reactivation, the diffuse CO2 soil degassing also increases and in December 2005 an anomalous CO2 flux of 1350 tons/day was estimated by 1588 measurements over a surface of 1.66 km2 extending from La Fossa crater to the inhabited zone of Vulcano Porto. The crater area and two other anomalously degassing sites (Levante Beach and Palizzi) have been periodically investigated from December 2004 to August 2010 for diffuse CO2 soil flux. They show a marked variation with time of the degassing rate, with synchronous maxima in December 2005. Carbon dioxide soil flux and environmental parameters have been also continuously monitored for over one year by an automatic station at Vulcano Porto. In order to assess the hazard of the endogenous gas emissions, CO2 and H2S air concentrations have been measured by Tunable Diode Laser profiles near the fumaroles of the crater rim and of the Levante Beach area, where also the viscous gas flux has been estimated. In addition, CO2 air concentration has been measured both indoor and outdoor in an inhabited sector of Vulcano Porto. Results show that in some sites usually frequented by tourists there is a dangerous H2S air concentration and CO2 exceeds the hazardous thresholds in some Vulcano houses. These zones should be immediately monitored for gas hazard should a new crisis arise.

    Description: Bulk deposition has been collected at six sampling sites in area of Gela plain (Italy) in the period from February 2008 to May 2009. Samples collected each two weeks were analysed for the major ion and trace elements content. Preliminary results allow identifying three different sources that control the abundance of the elements in atmospheric deposition: (1) sea spray, (2) geogenic dust, and (3) anthropogenic pollution. Due to the closeness of the coast, clear evidence of sea spray input is detectable for most of the samples. The high excess of non sea-salt sulphate (50 - 90% of the total) is prevailingly ascribable to the abundant SO2 emissions of the refinery. The pH values of the collected samples range from 4.2 to 8.6, with 80% of them above pH 6.5, indicating an extensive neutralization. This is due to NH3 coming from widespread agricultural activities in the plain of Gela, and geogenic CaCO3 either from local or from regional (desert dust) sources. Elevated levels of trace metals (Zn, V, Sb, Ni, Cr, Ni and Cu) can be observed in the samples collected close to the industrial area. All these elements can be identified as “anthropogenic” and attributed to the human activities, mainly to the industrial emissions, but a contribution could also derive from the intensive vehicular traffic.

    Description: Diffuse degassing through the soil is commonly observed in volcanic areas and monitoring of carbon dioxide flux at the surface can provide a safe and effective way to infer the state of activity of the volcanic system. Continuous measurement stations are often installed on active volcanoes such as Furnas (Azores archipelago), which features low temperature fumaroles, hot and cold CO2 rich springs, and several diffuse degassing areas. As in other volcanoes, fluxes measured at Furnas are often correlated with environmental variables, such as air temperature or barometric pressure, with daily and seasonal cycles that become more evident when gas emission is low. In this work, we study how changes in air temperature and barometric pressure may affect the gas emission through the soil. The TOUGH2 geothermal simulator was used to simulate the gas propagation through the soil as a function of fluctuating atmospheric conditions. Then, a dual parameters study was performed to assess how the rock permeability and the gas source properties affect the resulting fluxes. Numerical results are in good agreement with the observed data at Furnas, and show that atmospheric variables may cause the observed daily cycles in CO2 fluxes. The observed changes depend on soil permeability and on the pressure driving the upward flux.

    Description: Volcanoes are one of the major natural sources of several trace elements to the atmosphere: They contribute to atmospheric pollution by increasing the amount of reactive and greenhouse gases and aerosols. In particular, Mt. Etna is considered to be, on long-term average, the major global atmospheric point source of many environmental harmful compounds. Their emission occurs either through continuous passive degassing from open-conduit activity or through sporadic paroxysmal eruptive activity, in the form of gases, aerosols or particulate. For several months during the year (generally December-May), the summit of Mt. Etna is under a thick blanket of snow. This huge reservoir of frozen water, interacting with the volcanic plume, accumulates a great quantity of volcanogenic elements during the winter. Samples of snow were collected at different distances from summit craters along an 8 km radial transects, in the 2006 and 2007 winters. Each snow sample was analyzed for 37 elements in the laboratory using IC, ICP-OES and ICP-MS techniques. The impact of volcanic emissions is clearly detectable considering the opposite trends of pH and TDS (total dissolved solid) measured in snow samples with increasing distance from their “source”. The pH values range from 1.7 on the rim of the summit craters up to 7.6 at a distance of about 8 km, and TDS ranges from diluted samples (few mg/l) at distal sites, up to extremely concentrated samples (500 - 3500 mg/l) close to the emission vents. The acidity in precipitation around the volcano depends mainly on the concentrations of volcanogenic acid forming ions (SO2, HCl and HF), as well as on concentrations of mainly geogenic alkaline species, which may eventually neutralize the acidity. Regarding metals concentrations, there are orders of magnitude of difference between the different sites with decreasing values from the crater’s rim up to the farthest sites (5-8 km from craters). In particular three groups of elements were extremely enriched (many orders of magnitude higher) at the summit craters with respect to the distal samples: Halogens (Br, Cl, F, I) and S ascribable to volcanic gas contribution; Al, Fe and Ti deriving from magmatic silicate particulate; and elements such as Se, Cu, As, Bi, Cd, Tl, Pb and Hg which are highly mobile in the high temperature volcanic environment.

    Description: La présente étude a pour but de déterminer l’organotropisme de quatre métaux traces (Cd, Pb, Hg et Zn) ainsi que leurs concentrations dans le zooplancton et dans trois organes (muscle, foie et branchies) de la sardinelle (Sardinella aurita) provenant du golfe de Tunis. Les résultats ont montré que les concentrations moyennes des quatre métaux dosés (Cd, Pb, Hg et Zn) sont plus élevées dans la sardinelle que dans le zooplancton. Ceci est dû à la bioamplification de ces éléments dans la sardinelle qui occupe un niveau trophique élevé de la chaîne alimentaire marine. Pour le Pb, le Hg et le Zn, les teneurs le plus élevées ont été enregistrées dans les branchies de la sardinelle, alors que le Cd est concentré davantage au niveau du foie. Les concentrations trouvées, sont inférieures aux seuils fixés par la Commission Européenne de l’Environnement (CEE). En conséquence, les organismes analysés sont considérés comme indemnes de toute contamination par ces métaux traces.
    Description: تقيم هذه الدراسة التلوث الكيميائي في الهوائم الحيوانّية العائمة و في ثلاثة أعضاء لسمكة الاتشة Sardinella aurita (العضلة, الكبد, الخياشيم) وقع جلبها من خليج تونس. و يهدف هذا البحث إلى تقييم نسبة تركيز الكادميوم والرصاص و الزنك و الزئبق مع تحديد العضو الذي يقع فيه التركيز الأكبر لهذه المعادن. تم جمع العينات باستعمال شباك خاصة للهوائم العائمة و بواسطة الكركارة بالنسبة لسمك الاتشة. أجريت التحاليل بواسطة آلة الامتصاص الذري مع استعمال عينات مرجعية. بينت النتائج أن سمك الاتشة هو الذي فيه الأكثر تركيزا لهذه المعادن. وذلك بسبب تواجدها في أعلى سلم للمنظومة الغذائية . وأن الخياشيم تحتوي على أعلى النسبة من الرصاص و الزنك و الزئبق. استنادا على هذه الدراسة تجدر الإشارة إلى أن كميات المعادن الثقيلة تبقى ضعيفة بالمقارنة مع الحد الادني المعمول به لدى المنظمة الأوربية للبيئة. لذا يمكن اعتبار الأنواع التي وقع تحليلها خالية من كل تلو ث بهذه المعادن و بالتالي تبقى صالحة للاستهلاك.
    Description: This study aimed to investigate the bioaccumulation of trace elements (Cd, Pb, Hg and Zn) in Sardinella aurita (pelagic fish) and zooplankton from the gulf of Tunis. The analysis of Cd, Pb, Hg and Zn were carried out in three organs (liver, gills and muscle) of Sardinella aurita and in zooplankton and were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The obtained results indicate that Sardinella was more contaminated by trace elements than zooplankton in the gulf of Tunis. This difference could be related to the food chain position occupied by this fish. The liver of Sardinella has the highest level of cadmium, but the gills are the main organ which accumulate Pb, Hg and Zn. Trace metals in the edible parts of Sardinella aurita¸ from the gulf of Tunis were in the safety levels for human uses.

    Description: Los problemas de contaminación por elementos trazas y mayores en los sedimentos superficiales de la bahía de Guantánamo constituyen una preocupación de las autoridades locales de la cuenca Guantánamo – Guaso; por tal razón nos dimos a la tarea de estudiar la calidad de las aguas de la ensenada Cerro Guayabo, perteneciente a dicha cuenca, siendo esta una de las más impactadas por el desarrollo salinero en los últimos años. El estudio incluyó una revisión de todos los trabajos de caracterización realizados por otras instituciones en años anteriores, que nos permitió establecer la necesidad de evaluar con profundidad los sedimentos de la zona, pues hasta la fecha el comportamiento de la calidad de las aguas no aportó contaminación significativa. Los resultados muestran que los valores obtenidos en casi su totalidad dan por encima de la media al ser comparados con normativas internacionales (Holanda) y por debajo de los resultados obtenidos en el estudio de otras bahías (bahía de Cienfuegos y Nipe); los valores promedios para el Zn (146,12 mg/g), Pb (15,0 mg/g), Cr (54,46 mg/g) y Cd (≤ 0,1mg/g) no es preocupante para la salud ambiental de la bahía en tanto para el Hg (1,61mg/g ), Ni (137,5 mg/g) y fundamentalmente el Ti (583,3 mg/g), los valores fueron significativos. La discusión de los resultados permite concluir que la bahía de Guantánamo es una bahía de moderado impacto antrópicamente por metales pesados y en un futuro si no se toman las medidas de mitigación ambiental se agravaran las condiciones del ecosistema marino trayendo como consecuencia un aumento del deterioro de las aguas, la disminución de la cantidad y calidad de la actividad de pesquería y contaminación en las aguas de las lagunas de la salina, los cuales son los principales renglones económicos de la cuidad de Caimanera.

    Description: La présente étude a pour but de déterminer l’organotropisme de quatre métaux traces (Cd, Pb, Hg et Zn) ainsi que leurs concentrations dans le zooplancton et dans trois organes (muscle, foie et branchies) de la sardinelle (Sardinella aurita) provenant du golfe de Tunis. Les résultats ont montré que les concentrations moyennes des quatre métaux dosés (Cd, Pb, Hg et Zn) sont plus élevées dans la sardinelle que dans le zooplancton. Ceci est dû à la bioamplification de ces éléments dans la sardinelle qui occupe un niveau trophique élevé de la chaîne alimentaire marine. Pour le Pb, le Hg et le Zn, les teneurs le plus élevées ont été enregistrées dans les branchies de la sardinelle, alors que le Cd est concentré davantage au niveau du foie. Les concentrations trouvées, sont inférieures aux seuils fixés par la Commission Européenne de l’Environnement (CEE). En conséquence, les organismes analysés sont considérés comme indemnes de toute contamination par ces métaux traces.
    Description: تقيم هذه الدراسة التلوث الكيميائي في الهوائم الحيوانّية العائمة و في ثلاثة أعضاء لسمكة الاتشة Sardinella aurita (العضلة, الكبد, الخياشيم) وقع جلبها من خليج تونس. و يهدف هذا البحث إلى تقييم نسبة تركيز الكادميوم والرصاص و الزنك و الزئبق مع تحديد العضو الذي يقع فيه التركيز الأكبر لهذه المعادن. تم جمع العينات باستعمال شباك خاصة للهوائم العائمة و بواسطة الكركارة بالنسبة لسمك الاتشة. أجريت التحاليل بواسطة آلة الامتصاص الذري مع استعمال عينات مرجعية. بينت النتائج أن سمك الاتشة هو الذي فيه الأكثر تركيزا لهذه المعادن. وذلك بسبب تواجدها في أعلى سلم للمنظومة الغذائية . وأن الخياشيم تحتوي على أعلى النسبة من الرصاص و الزنك و الزئبق. استنادا على هذه الدراسة تجدر الإشارة إلى أن كميات المعادن الثقيلة تبقى ضعيفة بالمقارنة مع الحد الادني المعمول به لدى المنظمة الأوربية للبيئة. لذا يمكن اعتبار الأنواع التي وقع تحليلها خالية من كل تلو ث بهذه المعادن و بالتالي تبقى صالحة للاستهلاك.
    Description: This study aimed to investigate the bioaccumulation of trace elements (Cd, Pb, Hg and Zn) in Sardinella aurita (pelagic fish) and zooplankton from the gulf of Tunis. The analysis of Cd, Pb, Hg and Zn were carried out in three organs (liver, gills and muscle) of Sardinella aurita and in zooplankton and were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The obtained results indicate that Sardinella was more contaminated by trace elements than zooplankton in the gulf of Tunis. This difference could be related to the food chain position occupied by this fish. The liver of Sardinella has the highest level of cadmium, but the gills are the main organ which accumulate Pb, Hg and Zn. Trace metals in the edible parts of Sardinella aurita¸ from the gulf of Tunis were in the safety levels for human uses.

    Description: We report 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd data on clinopyroxenes recovered from 10 ocean island lavas from three different hot spots (Samoa, Society, and Cook-Austral island chains). The clinopyroxenes recovered from eight of the 10 lavas analyzed in this study exhibit 87Sr/86Sr disequilibrium with respect to the host lava. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios in clinopyroxene separates are 95–3146 ppm (0.0095–0.31%) different from their respective host whole rocks. Clinopyroxenes in three lavas have 143Nd/144Nd ratios that are 70–160 ppm (0.007–0.016%) different from the host lavas. The 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd disequilibrium in one lava (the oldest lava considered in this study, Mangaia sample MGA-B-47) can be attributed to posteruptive radiogenic ingrowth, but the isotope disequilibrium in the other, younger lavas cannot be explained by this mechanism. In five of the lava samples, two populations of clinopyroxene were isolated (black and green, separated by color). In four out of five of these samples, the 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the two clinopyroxene populations are isotopically different from each other. In addition to 87Sr/86Sr disequilibrium, the two clinopyroxene populations in one of the lavas (Tahaa sample TAA-B-26) have 143Nd/144Nd ratios that are ∼100 ppm different from each other. Given the resilience of clinopyroxene to seawater alteration and the likelihood that the Sr and Nd isotope composition of fresh clinopyroxene separates provides a faithful record of primary magmatic compositions, the clinopyroxene-clinopyroxene isotope disequilibrium in these four lavas provides strong evidence that a mechanism other than seawater alteration has generated the observed isotopic disequilibrium. This study confirms the isotopic diversity in ocean island lavas previously observed in olivine-hosted melt inclusions. For example, the Sr isotopic variability previously observed in olivine-hosted melt inclusions is mirrored by the isotopic diversity in clinopyroxenes isolated from many of the same Samoan lavas. The isotopic data from melt inclusions and clinopyroxenes are not consistent with shallow assimilation of sediment or with entrainment of xenocrystic clinopyroxene from the oceanic crust or upper mantle. Instead, the data are interpreted as reflecting isotopic heterogeneity in the mantle sources of the lavas. The isotopic diversity in clinopyroxenes and melt inclusions suggests that a single lava can host components derived from isotopically diverse source regions.

    Description: Intensive sampling of ambient atmospheric fine particulate matter was conducted at Woods Hole, Massachusetts over a four-month period from 3 April to 29 July, 2008, in conjunction with year-long deployment of the USGS Mobile Mercury Lab. Results were obtained for trace elements in fine particulate matter concurrently with determination of ambient atmospheric mercury speciation and concentrations of ancillary gasses (SO2, NOx, and O3). For particulate matter, trace element enrichment factors greater than 10 relative to crustal background values were found for As, Bi, Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb, Sb, V, and Zn, indicating contribution of these elements by anthropogenic sources. For other elements, enrichments are consistent with natural marine (Na, Ca, Mg, Sr) or crustal (Ba, Ce, Co, Cs, Fe, Ga, La, Rb, Sc, Th, Ti, U, Y) sources, respectively. Positive matrix factorization was used together with concentration weighted air-mass back trajectories to better define element sources and their locations. Our analysis, based on events exhibiting the 10% highest PM2.5 contributions for each source category, identifies coal-fired power stations concentrated in the U.S. Ohio Valley, metal smelting in eastern Canada, and marine and crustal sources showing surprisingly similar back trajectories, at times each sampling Atlantic coastal airsheds. This pattern is consistent with contribution of Saharan dust by a summer maximum at the latitude of Florida and northward transport up the Atlantic Coast by clockwise circulation of the summer Bermuda High. Results for mercury speciation show diurnal production of RGM by photochemical oxidation of Hg° in a marine environment, and periodic traverse of the study area by correlated RGM-SO2(NOx) plumes, indicative of coal combustion sources.

    Description: Photosynthesis by marine phytoplankton requires bioavailable forms of several trace elements that are found in extremely low concentrations in the open ocean. We have compared the concentration, lability and size distribution (〈 1 nm and 〈 10 nm) of a suite of trace elements that are thought to be limiting to primary productivity as well as a toxic element (Pb) in two High Nutrient Low Chlorophyll (HNLC) regions using a new dynamic speciation technique, Diffusive Gradients in Thin-film (DGT). The labile species trapped within the DGT probes have a size that is smaller or similar than the pore size of algal cell walls and thus present a proxy for bioavailable species. Total Dissolvable trace element concentrations (TD concentration) varied between 0.05 nM (Co) and 4.0 nM (Ni) at K2 (Northwest Pacific Ocean) and between 0.026 nM (Co) and 4.7 nM (Ni) in the Southern Ocean. The smallest size fractionated labile concentrations (〈 1 nm) observed at Southern Ocean sampling stations ranged between 0.002 nM (Co) and 2.1 nM (Ni). Moreover, large differences in bioavailable fractions (ratio of labile to TD concentration) were observed between the trace elements. In the Northwest Pacific Ocean Fe, Cu and Mn had lower labile fractions (between 10 and 44%) than Co, Cd, Ni and Pb (between 80 and 100%). In the Southern Ocean a similar trend was observed, and in addition: (1) Co, Cd, Ni and Pb have lower labile fractions in the Southern Ocean than in the Northwest Pacific and (2) the ratios of 〈1nm to dissolvable element concentrations at some Southern Ocean stations were very low and varied between 4 and16 %.

    Description: Pb and Pb isotopes in the ocean have varied on decadal to centennial time scales due to anthropogenic Pb inputs. Thus, tracing the temporal variation of Pb and Pb isotopes in the ocean provides information on the major sources of Pb and the transport of Pb from sources to the ocean surface and into the ocean interior. In this thesis study, first, a method was developed for the analysis of dissolved Pb and other trace elements in seawater using single batch nitrilotriacetate resin extraction and isotope dilution ICP-MS, which was applied in analyzing seawater Pb concentrations in the rest of the study. A ~550 year history of the Pb and Pb isotopes in the deep North Atlantic Ocean is reconstructed using a deep-sea coral, showing the infiltration of anthropogenic Pb to deep sea. Comparing the results to the surface North Atlantic Ocean Pb record using a Transit Time Distribution model, the mean transit time of Pb is estimated to be ~64 years. This is longer than the transit time estimate assuming simple advection from a source, showing the importance of advective-diffusive mixing in the transport of Pb to the ocean interior. The later part of the thesis investigates Pb in the Indian Ocean, where no useful Pb data have been previously reported. First, using annually-banded surface growing corals, I reconstruct variations of Pb and isotopes in the surface waters of the central and eastern Indian Oceans during the past half-century. Results of the study show the increase of Pb concentrations from the mid-1970s, and major sources of the Pb are discussed, including leaded gasoline and coal burning, based on their emission histories and Pb isotope signatures. Second, Pb concentration and isotope profiles are presented from the northern and western Indian Oceans. Higher Pb concentrations and lower Pb isotope ratios (206Pb/207Pb, 208Pb/207Pb) are found in the upper water column (〈1500m) as a result of anthropogenic Pb inputs, and their distributions are largely controlled by the water circulation in the Indian Ocean.

    Description: New Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, and published stable oxygen isotope and 87Sr/86Sr data obtained on ostracods from gravity cores located on the northwestern Black Sea slope were used to infer changes in the Black Sea hydrology and water chemistry for the period between 30 to 8 ka B.P. (calibrated radiocarbon years). The period prior to 16.5 ka B.P. was characterized by stable conditions in all records until a distinct drop in δ 18O values combined with a sharp increase in 87Sr/86Sr occurred between 16.5 and 14.8 ka B.P. This event is attributed to an increased runoff from the northern drainage area of the Black Sea between Heinrich Event 1 and the onset of the Bølling warm period. While the Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca records remained rather unaffected by this inflow; they show an abrupt rise with the onset of the Bølling/Allerød warm period. This rise was caused by calcite precipitation in the surface water, which led to a sudden increase of the Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios of the Black Sea water. The stable oxygen isotopes also start to increase around 15 ka B.P., although in a more gradual manner, due to isotopically enriched meteoric precipitation. While Sr/Ca remains constant during the following interval of the Younger Dryas cold period, a decrease in the Mg/Ca ratio implies that the intermediate water masses of the Black Sea temporarily cooled by 1–2°C during the Younger Dryas. The 87Sr/86Sr values drop after the cessation of the water inflow at 15 ka B.P. to a lower level until the Younger Dryas, where they reach values similar to those observed during the Last Glacial Maximum. This might point to a potential outflow to the Mediterranean Sea via the Sea of Marmara during this period. The inflow of Mediterranean water started around 9.3 ka B.P., which is clearly detectable in the abruptly increasing Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, and 87Sr/86Sr values. The accompanying increase in the δ 18O record is less pronounced and would fit to an inflow lasting ∼100 a.

    Description: Detailed mapping, sampling, and geochemical analyses of lava flows erupted from an ∼18 km long section of the northern East Pacific Rise (EPR) from 9°46′N to 9°56′N during 2005–2006 provide unique data pertaining to the short-term thermochemical changes in a mid-ocean ridge magmatic system. The 2005–2006 lavas are typical normal mid-oceanic ridge basalt with strongly depleted incompatible trace element patterns with marked negative Sr and Eu/Eu* anomalies and are slightly more evolved than lavas erupted in 1991–1992 at the same location on the EPR. Spatial geochemical differences show that lavas from the northern and southern limits of the 2005–2006 eruption are more evolved than those erupted in the central portion of the fissure system. Similar spatial patterns observed in 1991–1992 lavas suggest geochemical gradients are preserved over decadal time scales. Products of northern axial and off-axis fissure eruptions are consistent with the eruption of cooler, more fractionated lavas that also record a parental melt component not observed in the main suite of 2005–2006 lavas. Radiogenic isotopic ratios for 2005–2006 lavas fall within larger isotopic fields defined for young axial lavas from 9°N to 10°N EPR, including those from the 1991–1992 eruption. Geochemical data from the 2005–2006 eruption are consistent with an invariable mantle source over the spatial extent of the eruption and petrogenetic processes (e.g., fractional crystallization and magma mixing) operating within the crystal mush zone and axial magma chamber (AMC) before and during the 13 year repose period. Geochemical modeling suggests that the 2005–2006 lavas represent differentiated residual liquids from the 1991–1992 eruption that were modified by melts added from deeper within the crust and that the eruption was not initiated by the injection of hotter, more primitive basalt directly into the AMC. Rather, the eruption was driven by AMC pressurization from persistent or episodic addition of more evolved magma from the crystal mush zone into the overlying subridge AMC during the period between the two eruptions. Heat balance calculations of a hydrothermally cooled AMC support this model and show that continual addition of melt from the mush zone was required to maintain a sizable AMC over this time interval.

    Notes: Abstract In a comparative study the requirement of several strains of autotrophic hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria for nickel was examined. Autotrophic growth was studied both in liquid media, previously freed from trace metals; and on solidified media, using a plate diffusion assay. The latter assay was based on the observation that EDTA causes complete inhibition of autotrophic growth on agar medium as a result of nickel deficiency. Nickel was shown to be required as a trace element in five strains of Alcaligenes eutrophus, in two strains of Xanthobacter autotrophicus, in Pseudomonas flava, in Arthrobacter spec. 11X and in strain 12X. In these bacteria nickel was not replaceable by cobalt, copper, manganese or zinc ions. No significant nickel requirement was detected by these methods, however, for Paracoccus denitrificans and Nocardia opaca 1b.

    Notes: Summary Concentrations of Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn were measured in bulk atmospheric precipitation, throughfall, stemflow, and soil solutions at 10−, 15−, 25−, and 30-cm depths, in aEucalyptus globulus forest in the Berkeley hills, California, during the 1974–75 wet season after each main storm event. Litter and plant samples were analyzed. There was some similarity in the behavior of Cu, Fe, and Zn, but Mn behaved differently. Mn and Zn are largely deposited on the forest canopy by impaction during dry-deposition episodes, whereas most of the Cu and Fe input occurs in rain. For the hydrologic components measured, concentrations of Cu and Fe increase in the order: precipitation〈throughfall〈stemflow 〈soil solutions. For Zn the order is: precipitation〈stemflow〈throughfall〈soil solutions. Concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Fe in the soil solution fluctuate with downward movement of wetting fronts and are negatively correlated with pH. Concentrations of Fe in soil solution are about 10 times greater than those of throughfall and stemflow; the corresponding relative differences for Cu and Zn were much less. Plant uptake of Mn exceeds that of Cu, Zn, and Fe. The increases in Mn concentrations from precipitation to throughfall and stemflow are much greater than those for Cu, Zn, and Fe because precipitation has very low Mn concentrations. The concentration series for Mn is: precipitation〈soil solutions〈throughfall〈stemflow. Concentrations of Mn in the soil solution are negatively correlated with pH. During the dry summer Mn accumulates in the soil, but is quickly flushed by early rains of the wet season.

    Notes: Abstract Element and extractant-specific desorption of Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn fromSpartina alterniflora detritus was observed. Desorption of a substantial fraction of the total detrital Mn, Fe, Cu and Zn occured rapidly when the detritus was treated with 0.1N HCl or 1 MgCl2. This treatment removed precipitated/coprecipitated and adsorbed trace elements, respectively, suggesting that a large fraction of detritus-bound trace elements are in readily exchangeable, surface reaction sites. The carboxylic acid functional group cation exchange capacity of the detritus also suggests an important role of surface exchange reactions in the dynamics of trace elements during decomposition. The rate and magnitude of changes in the trace element content of detritus has important implications for estuarine biogeochemical cycling of these elements including the potential for biological uptake of trace elements by detritus-consuming fauna.

    Notes: Summary Trace element levels extractable by 2-ketogluconic acid (2-KG), ammonium acetate, acetic acid, EDTA, and DTPA were determined in three different soils of the Tarves association. The 2-ketogluconic acid was derived from 2-litre batch cultures of a soil bacterium,Erwinia sp. Pasture grasses and clovers growing on these soils were also analysed. At the same pH, 2-KG extracted more Co, Ni and Zn and considerably more Fe, Ti and V than ammonium acetate.
