    Brine shrimp provides a rich-high energy food for migrating birds: A case study of an artificial pond in Basrah, Iraq. (2023)

    Beschreibung: A case study focusing on the attraction of migrating birds by brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana) into an artificial pond in Basrah, Iraq. A dump area had constructed at the intertidal mudflat’s zone of Khor Al-Zubair Channel, Basrah, Iraq. Basra Gas Company implemented a dredging operation to increase the channel depth in 2019 to use the dump area as a disposal place for the company’s benthic sediments, which are usually mixed with seawater, converting the dump area to a large hypersaline artificial pond. Unexpectedly, the pond became a habitat for many shorebird species a few months later. The pond has been surveyed five times between March 2019 and January 2020. For each survey, frequent environmental and biological events were observed. Due to high temperature during most summer months (30-50°C), the water level decreased dramatically to (〈 0.5 m), which ultimately led to increase levels of salinity in the pond (80 psu). Moreover, growth of blue-green algae was observed and appearance of brine shrimp A. franciscana. During autumn and winter surveys, an abundance of live A. franciscana and their cysts was observed. Birds appeared to forage primarily on A. franciscana in the pond. The abundance of brine shrimp attracts migrating birds to exploit this prey. 11 species of migrating birds were detected in the pond. These species were flamingo Phoenicopterus ruber, flocks of avocet Ricurvirosta avosetta and Shelduck Tadorna tadorna. Therefore, this site with abundant food resources could provide a rich-high energy food for migrating birds and staging area for a long flight.

    Beschreibung: Der Übergang der früheren Staatshandelsländer Mittel- und Osteuropas hat sich in den letzten zehn Jahren keineswegs so kontinuierlich und bruchlos vollzogen, wie dies westliche Ökonomen erwartet oder zumindest erhofft hatten. Stattdessen kam es in den verschiedensten Bereichen - sowohl realwirtschaftlich als auch monetär - zu erheblichen Verwerfungen und Rückschlägen, die den generellen Befund von - wenn auch im einzelnen unterschiedlich ausgeprägten - "Transformationskrisen" in den meisten betroffenen Ländern rechtfertigen. Aber auch außerhalb des zusammengebrochenen RGW-Blocks gibt es sowohl länderspezifisch als auch länderübergreifend eine Vielzahl ungelöster "marktwirtschaftlicher Hausaufgaben", nicht zuletzt in der Europäischen Union selbst. Unter diesen Bedingungen ist die nicht nur politisch erwünschte, sondern auch langfristig ökonomisch gebotene Osterweiterung der EU eine sehr schwierige Aufgabe, die auch bei den bisherigen Mitgliedsländern einen erheblichen Reformwillen und eine umfassende Reformbereitschaft erfordert, soll diese Erweiterung die mit ihr verbundenen wirtschaftlichen und politischen Hoffnungen nicht enttäuschen. Der Ausschuß für Wirtschaftssysteme des Vereins für Socialpolitik widmete sich diesem Problemkreis auf seiner 31. Jahrestagung vom 26. bis 28. September 1999. Der vorliegende Band dokumentiert die Beratungen des Ausschusses anhand der überarbeiteten Referate und Korreferate. Nach grundsätzlichen wachstumstheoretischen Überlegungen (Herbert Brücker) wird die Osterweiterung als Prüfstein für die Reformfähigkeit der EU (Helmut Leipold) betrachtet, und Hans Jürgen Wagener analysiert den schwierigen Übergangsprozess der Länder Mittel- und Osteuropas als "Rückkehr nach Europa". Monetäre Krisenphänomene sind Gegenstand der Untersuchungen von Theresia Theurl und von Uwe Vollmer, während die besonderen Probleme der Systemtransformation großer Länder am Beispiel Chinas von Carsten Herrmann-Pillath dargestellt werden. Die schwierigen Transformationsprozesse im südlichen Mittelmeerraum werden schließlich von Volker Nienhaus untersucht. Die Beiträge und die Korreferate machen deutlich, daß institutionelle Reformen, auch im politischen System, für eine gelingende Transformation und eine sinnvolle Erweiterung der EU unabdingbar sind.

Since its invention, the automobile has been systematically 'consumed', to become part of the fabric of twentieth- and twenty-first-century society, its impact and perception making the car an accurate gauge of changing cultural norms and values. As it grew in popularity, the automobile conditioned the very texture of modern life, and the particularly car-centred society of contemporary France is an especially apt locus for examination. The ubiquity of the automobile across all social strata provides us with a defined lens through which to examine the evolution of French society in the modern and post-modern eras. Taking the Second World War as a pivotal moment in recent French history, this book demonstrates how the automobile was both consumed and fetishized in distinct ways before and after this conflict. The ways in which society evolved from the pre- to the post-war period allow us to view French culture through the prism of the automobile as it embodied technological and social progress in twentieth-century France. The present volume seeks to explore and interrogate the processes of representation and mediation inherent in the evolving patterns of automobile consumption, and their subsequent impacts on local and national identity, framed by a detailed case study centred on France from the late-nineteenth century to the oil crisis of the early 1970s.

    Beschreibung: Auf seiner letzten Jahrestagung hat sich der Verein für Socialpolitik mit einem der zentralen Zukunftsthemen der europäischen Wirtschaftspolitik auseinandergesetzt: Die Osterweiterung der Europäischen Union. Der Vorsitzende des Vereins, Hans-Werner Sinn, greift in seiner Eröffnungsrede die Sorge der Westeuropäer über erwartete Wanderungsströme von Arbeitskräften auf. Er warnt vor einer Dramatisierung, weist aber auf die Anpassungserfordernisse für Arbeitsmärkte und Sozialsysteme hin. Andries Brandsma von der Europäischen Kommission macht deutlich, daß vor dem Beitritt ein umfassender Kriterienkatalog zu erfüllen ist, was den Beitrittskandidaten bisher in unterschiedlichem Maße gelungen ist. Die Wohlfahrtseffekte der Osterweiterung für die EU 15, die bisher empirisch kaum quantifiziert wurden, behandelt Wilhelm Kohler von der Universität Linz im Rahmen einer modellgestützten empirischen Analyse. Michael Burda von der Berliner Humboldt-Universität setzt sich vornehmlich mit den Arbeitsmarktwirkungen auseinander. Im Unterschied zur herrschenden Meinung erwartet er positive Arbeitsmarkteffekte für die EU 15, hingegen eher negative für die Beitrittsländer. Hans Peter Lankes von der EBRD vertritt die These, daß in der Phase vor dem Beitritt erhöhte Investitionsanforderungen auf die betreffenden Länder zukommen, für deren Finanzierung die Voraussetzungen geschaffen werden müssen. Alfred Steinherr von der Europäischen Investitionsbank betont abschließend nochmals die tiefgreifenden Reformen, die von der Gemeinschaft der 15 vor einer Osterweiterung vollzogen werden müssen. Auf der Jahrestagung erfolgen stets auch Ehrungen. Neben der Verleihung des Gossenpreises an Ernst Fehr war die Thünen-Vorlesung des Nobelpreisträgers Reinhard Selten ein besonderes wissenschaftliches Vergnügen. Mit seinen Ausführungen hat er an den Grundfesten der ökonomischen Theorie gerüttelt, was manchen Tagungsteilnehmer sicher nicht wenig irritiert hat.

The meeting focused on the effectiveness of, and new approaches in, development cooperation. Both issues have become increasingly important in recent years in view of the declining volume of budget funds allocated to development cooperation. The papers discussing the effectiveness of foreign aid shed new light on the issue at a crucial moment where economists have begun to question the recent consensus that the productivity of aid mainly depends on the recipient country's policy environment. As far as the contributions dealing with new approaches in development cooperation are concerned, these are centred on a closer integration of the private sector, by joint action with so-called lead firms in production networks on the one hand, and the mobilization of additional financial resources from international capital markets for bilateral development cooperation, on the other. The authors also make suggestions concerning critical aspects relevant for implementation.     Beschreibung: Die Europäische Union steht vor großen Herausforderungen. Erweiterung und Vertiefung der Union stehen auf der Politikagenda. Ob die Vorschläge des Europäischen Verfassungskonvents für eine grundlegende Erneuerung des Unionsvertrages diesbezüglich zukunftsfähig sind, bedarf einer intensiven Diskussion. In den Beiträgen des vorliegenden Bandes stehen Probleme speziell der europäischen Wirtschaftsverfassung im Mittelpunkt. Obwohl der Begriff der Wirtschaftsverfassung nicht eindeutig definiert ist, sind juristische und vor allem verfassungs- und institutionenökonomische Analysen von Belang. Dabei spannen die Beiträge einen Bogen über die wichtigsten Problembereiche. Grundsätzliche Überlegungen zu einer europäischen Verfassung führen zu den Fragen: Benötigen wir überhaupt eine Verfassung für Europa? Wie ist das Verhältnis zwischen den Nationalstaaten und der Union zu regeln? Freiheit, Bürgersouveränität und Subsidiarität - als eine spezielle Ausprägung des Prinzips der komparativen Wettbewerbsvorteile - spielen in der europäischen Wirtschaftsverfassung eine zentrale Rolle. Sie ergänzen sich mit Überlegungen zur europäischen Finanzverfassung, in der auch die Frage nach den institutionellen Ebenen gestellt wird, die für die Bereitstellung und Finanzierung unterschiedlicher Güter in der Union verantwortlich sind. Gefragt wird auch, ob eine Koordination der nationalen Arbeitsmarktpolitiken auf EU-Ebene sinnvoll ist, oder ob die Bekämpfung der Arbeitslosigkeit im nationalen Politikbereich verbleiben sollte. Zudem: Welche konstitutionen- und institutionenökonomischen Dimensionen hat der Stabilitäts- und Wachstumspakt? Behandelt wird auch das Problem, ob im europäischen Strukturwandel ein Konflikt existiert zwischen ökonomischer Effizienz und sozialer Sicherheit. Vor dem Hintergrund der Theorie optimaler Jurisdiktionen stellt sich die Frage nach der optimalen Länderzahl für die EU-Erweiterung. Optimalitätsprobleme aufgrund der Erweiterung des Euro-Raumes werden hinsichtlich der Entscheidungseffizienz des Rats der Europäischen Zentralbank erörtert. Schließlich behandelt der Band spezielle Aspekte der Subsidiarität sowie der kollektiven Marktbeherrschung in der Wettbewerbspolitik innerhalb der Union.

    Beschreibung: Nationalstaaten verändern ihre Größe - dies lehrt die Geschichte. Gleichwohl wird die Größe eines Landes in der Ökonomik meist als exogen angenommen und nicht erklärt. Dies überrascht, weil die Staatsgröße in gewissem Umfang als Ergebnis rationaler Entscheidungen und als genuin institutionenökonomische Fragestellung angesehen werden kann. Deshalb fragen die Autoren des vorliegenden Bandes aus institutionenökonomischer Sicht nach ökonomischen und politischen Grenzen von Wirtschaftsräumen. Der erste Teil befasst sich mit vorliegenden Ansätzen zur Erklärung der Größe von Nationen am Beispiel der Europäischen Union und des Deutschen Reiches: Gibt es eine optimale Größe der EU? Welches sind die Ursachen der historischen deutschen Kleinstaaterei? Diskutiert wird zudem die These, dass zunehmender Welthandel ein Faktor der Desintegration von Staaten sei. Im Mittelpunkt des zweiten Teils steht die Verteilung öffentlicher Aufgaben innerhalb einer Nation. Die Autoren fragen, warum nicht alle staatlichen Aufgaben in der Hand einer Zentralregierung liegen, sondern teilweise auf sub- und supranationale Jurisdiktionsebenen ausgelagert sind. Japan gereicht als ein Beispiel für ein bislang zentralistisch organisiertes Staatsgebilde, für das eine stärkere Dezentralisierung gefordert wird. Thema des dritten Teils ist die Integration von Wirtschaftsräumen durch Finanznetzwerke. Analysiert wird beispielhaft das informelle Finanzsystem "hawala", das vor allem in islamischen Ländern verbreitet ist.

    Beschreibung: Fresh fruit and vegetables are considered as essential components of a healthy human diet, due to their pleasant taste and rich nutrients. However, fruits and vegetables are characterized by production seasonality, regionality, and perishability, which greatly affect the acceptance of consumers and increase the challenges of their post-harvest storage and preservation. A plurality of preservation technologies, including chemical treatment (calcium chloride, 1-methylcyclopropene, salicylic acid, etc.), physical methods (low-temperature conditioning, controlled atmosphere storage, ultraviolet-C irradiation, etc.), and biotechnology (such as genetic engineering technology) have been applied to maintain storage quality and to extend the storage life of fresh fruit and vegetables in recent years. Developing advanced preservation techniques to prolong the storage life of fruit and vegetables is of importance for improving social and economic benefits. Therefore, we invited authors to contribute original research articles and review articles focused on the innovative preservation technology of fresh produce, addressing storage problems, such as post-harvest quality deterioration caused by senescence, physiological disorders, and disease, to extend the shelf-life of fresh produce and reduce post-harvest loss.

    Beschreibung: Die Vollendung des fünften Jahrzehnts seit dem Zustandekommen der Vereinbarungen von »Bretton Woods« nahm der Wirtschaftspolitische Ausschuß der Gesellschaft für Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften (Verein für Socialpolitik) zum Anlaß, sich auf seiner Sitzung am 23. und 24. März 1994 in Mainz mit Problemen der Weltwirtschaftsordnung zu beschäftigen. Die auf dieser Tagung vorgelegten und diskutierten Referate werden in diesem Band publiziert. Im ersten Aufsatz zeigt C.W.A.M van Paridon - unter Rückgriff auf eine Studie des Zentralen Planungsamtes der Niederlande -, wie sehr die künftige Entwicklung der Weltwirtschaft nicht nur davon abhängt, ob es den drei großen Handelsblöcken gelingt, ihre internen Probleme zu bewältigen, sondern auch davon, inwieweit diese Triade in der Lage sein wird, dem schleichenden Protektionismus wirksam Einhalt zu gebieten und die Liberalisierung der Weltwirtschaftsordnung (weiter) voranzutreiben. Zur Frage, ob dies zu erwarten ist, kommt Norbert Berthold - vor allem mit Hilfe von Überlegungen der ökonomischen Theorie der Politik - zu einer eher pessimistischen Prognose. Optimistischere Erwartungen impliziert demgegenüber die kritische Würdigung der letzten GATT-Runde durch Josef Molsberger. Wie schwierig sich eine Erweiterung des Geltungsbereichs liberaler Regeln für den internationalen Handel auch auf den tertiären Sektor gestaltet, illustriert Jörn Kruse am Beispiel audiovisueller Dienstleistungen. Über die Zukunft der Weltwirtschaftsordnung entscheidet aber nicht allein die Gestaltung der Welthandelsordnung. Von vergleichbarer Bedeutung ist auch die internationale Währungsordnung. Diesen Aspekt thematisiert Norbert Kloten: Seine Darlegungen lassen vermuten, daß das nach dem Ende des Wechselkurssystems von Bretton Woods entstandene System frei flexibler Wechselkurse - zumal zwischen den drei großen Handelsblöcken - trotz seiner bekannten Schwachstellen in absehbarer Zeit kaum eine Änderung der geltenden Regeln erfahren wird; denn

Among the hotly debated questions: what is austerity? Was it necessary? What have been its consequences? One of the defining features of the debate to date has been its tendency to polarise opinion and adopt a one-dimensional perspective. This book challenges us to adopt a more nuanced approach to understandings of austerity, and by extension the path to recovery. The book brings together leading national and international experts from across the social sciences to debate this traumatic period in Ireland’s economic and social development. The papers were selected from a conference at the Royal Irish Academy, peer-reviewed and rewritten with the addition of a substantial introduction and conclusion by the editors.

    Beschreibung: Fresh fruit and vegetables are considered as essential components of a healthy human diet, due to their pleasant taste and rich nutrients. However, fruits and vegetables are characterized by production seasonality, regionality, and perishability, which greatly affect the acceptance of consumers and increase the challenges of their post-harvest storage and preservation. A plurality of preservation technologies, including chemical treatment (calcium chloride, 1-methylcyclopropene, salicylic acid, etc.), physical methods (low-temperature conditioning, controlled atmosphere storage, ultraviolet-C irradiation, etc.), and biotechnology (such as genetic engineering technology) have been applied to maintain storage quality and to extend the storage life of fresh fruit and vegetables in recent years. Developing advanced preservation techniques to prolong the storage life of fruit and vegetables is of importance for improving social and economic benefits. Therefore, we invited authors to contribute original research articles and review articles focused on the innovative preservation technology of fresh produce, addressing storage problems, such as post-harvest quality deterioration caused by senescence, physiological disorders, and disease, to extend the shelf-life of fresh produce and reduce post-harvest loss.

Vitamins C and D have important roles in both the innate and adaptive immune systems and are known to support healthy immune function. Se postuló que, en el marco estratégico de su reproducción social, la acción práctica de los productores familiares responde a una lógica distinta de la lógica económica del agronegocio, estructurada a partir de un “sentido práctico" compartido. Se formuló como problema de investigación discutir y ampliar, en aspectos teóricos y empíricos, la “resistencia" de la producción familiar, lo que implica una perspectiva cualitativa. El objetivo general se estableció en términos de contribuir a comprender las prácticas de resistencia de los productores familiares.

It examines how encounters between tourists and hosts tend to be constructed along colonial thought lines and considers how players in the hospitality industry do not interact as coeval participants, but are racialised, scripted and positioned according to colonially-established order. The authors focus on the language of these encounters, not only speech, performance and response, but also silence, resonance, emptiness, noise – objectified, materialised, evasive and confusing. Through its exploration of language in these encounters, the volume shows that ruination is the one feature that is omnipresent in the multiple and diverse tourist settings of the postcolonial world. They are ambitious, highly-talented executives who have risen to the very pinnacle of their chosen vocation - public service to the Australian nation - usually after having spent most, if not all, of their professional careers dedicated to the public service. They serve governments as their top advisers and in policy terms are often some of the most important decision-makers in the country. This collection brings together the valedictory speeches and essays from a departing group of secretaries (and one or two other equivalent agency heads) who left the Australian Public Service between 2004 and 2011. Over this period of time it gradually became accepted that departing secretaries and heads of significant agencies would present a valedictory address to their peers at a public farewell function. The first two speeches in this collection were initiated informally and given at functions organised by their agencies; in 2005 the process was formalised with the Australian Public Service Commission acting as organiser. These contributions contain reflections, commentaries, occasional fond memories or key turning-points in careers, critiques of changes that have occurred and an outline of the remaining challenges their successors will face as the public administrators of tomorrow. From the outset it is clear that there is no uniform message, no single narrative levelled either in praise or in criticism, other than pride in the public service and strong belief in the contribution it makes to the Australian community. They have their own personal 'takes' on how the public service looks to them, on its performance and on the challenges confronting public administration into the future. Most spend some time looking back, reflecting on the extent of change that has occurred over the length of their careers; but equally importantly they look forward, anticipating future policy dilemmas and capacity challenges. John Wanna holds the Sir John Bunting Chair of Public Administration at the Research School of Social Sciences at The Australian National University and is director of research for the Australian and New Zealand School of Government (ANZSOG). Andrew Podger is professor of public administration at The Australian National University and adjunct professor at Griffith University and Xi'an Jiao Tong University. A former Australian Public Service Commissioner and secretary of the departments of Health and Aged Care, Housing and Regional Development, and Administrative Services, he retired from public service in 2004. Sam Vincent is a Canberra-based freelance journalist who contributes to The Sydney Morning Herald, The Sun-Herald, The Age and Inside Sport magazine.

Se trata, en definitiva, de sentar las bases teóricas y metodológicas de una estrategia agroecológica común.
