    Description: Coral settlement patterns were measured at two sites in the Mombasa Marine National Park for a 2-year period from May 2001 to February 2003. Artificial settlement tiles were deployed for approximately 3-month periods and were collected in Febru - ary, May, August and November of each year. The mean number of coral spat settled on collected tiles varied from 0.75 (± 0.79 s.d.) per tile in August 2001 to a maximum of 16.70 (± 7.53 s.d.) in November 2002, corresponding to mean densities of 8–740 m –2 . The maximum number of spat recorded on a single tile was 38 (November 2002). Although peak settlement rates were recorded in November of each year, settlement was sufficiently variable between months and years to obscure a clear seasonal cycle. Settle - ment was highest at the study site with the best water flow and exchange with the open ocean. Pocilloporids ( Pocillopora spp.) dominated settlement (76%), followed by poritids (19%), then ‘others’. Patterns suggest peak coral recruitment in September– November each year when water temperatures are increasing the fastest prior to reaching their seasonal maxima in March–April, but with substantial recruitment of pocilloporids and poritids throughout the year.

    Description: The current regime of fisheries management and issues concerning the achievement of a more locally oriented system of fisheries management in Diani-Chale, southern Kenya are examined. Fisheries management in the area is characterized by a lack of strong government capacity for regulation, weakened local institutions, and an absence in the ability to exert control over the use of the fishery. Local level management requires the development and use of local institutions that can govern the use of fishery resources. The landing sites and associated fishing grounds constitute a socio-ecological unit and were identified to be the appropriate level at which many fishery management issues could be resolved. A more formal role for these entities, together with clarification of tenure of fishing grounds and support for the development and enforcement of local rules for the use of the fishery are essential actions that should be taken by government to enable more local level fisheries management. The socio-economic condition of fishers, the fear fishers have over the loss of landing sites, and the continued perception of the imposition of a marine reserve in the area pose barriers to initiatives seeking to further local level management. The need for a coordinated approach among agencies working on fisheries issues in the area is essential so as to avoid the erosion of social trust with local fishing communities.

    Description: Based on the data from monthly complex observations during the two-year cycle (March 2010 – March 2012) at the mussel and oyster farming site (Black Sea, Katsiveli, Crimea), features of interannual and seasonal variability of hydrological and hydrochemical parameters were investigated, as well as the state of phytoplankton as the basis of food resources for the cultured molluscs. Dependency of food spectrum for the molluscs from seasonal and interannual variability of water temperature and biogenic content is shown.
    Description: По данным ежемесячных комплексных наблюдений в течение двухлетнего цикла (март 2010 – март 2012 гг.) в районе расположения мидийно-устричной фермы (Черное море, п. Кацивели, Крым) рассмотрены особенности межгодовой и сезонной изменчивости гидролого-гидрохимических характеристик, а также состояние фитопланктона как основы кормовой базы культивируемых моллюсков. Показана зависимость пищевого спектра моллюсков от сезонной и межгодовой изменчивости температуры воды и содержания биогенов.

    Description: Natural potential of the increase in abundance is identified for artemia populations, based on the analysis of «inherent rate of natural increase in abundance» (r) change. It can be considered as the quantitative assessment of the pressure degree of natural factors on artemia populations. As an example of increase in population abundance, the data are presented that were obtained for A. salina populations in 8 saline lakes of Crimea (Russian Federation). Based on the study of seasonal dynamics of artemia population abundance in the lakes, the values (r) were estimated for different time spans during the growing season. Calculations for r values for the total growing season of the populations showed that the total ratio between mortality and birthrate is negative for all lakes. It can be assumed that maximum rate of increase in abundance of natural artemia populations is determined by the ratio of their definitive weight and average weight of an individual in a population. The analysis indicated that average weight of an individual in a population of A. salina in various water bodies and in different years varied from 0.23 to 0.53 g, i.e. changed in 2.5 times. Under extreme values of Wav/Wmax, the rmp appears to be equal to 0.0187 and 0.0046, respectively. Upon comparison of two extreme options, it can be noted that the increase of Wav/Wmax in 2.5 times leads to the decrease of rmp in 4 times.
    Description: На основе анализа изменения «врожденной скорости естественного увеличения численности» (r) изучено, в какой мере в популяциях артемии реализуются природные потенции увеличения их численности. Ее можно рассматривать как количественную оценку степени давления природных факторов на популяции артемий. В качестве примера роста численности популяции были приведены данные, полученные П.М. Вороновым для популяций A. salina в 8 соленых озерах Крыма. На основе изучения сезонной динамики численности популяций артемий в озерах были рассчитаны значения (r) для отдельных отрезков времени в течение вегетационного сезона. Расчеты значений r для всего вегетационного периода популяций показали, что во всех озерах суммарное соотношение между смертностью и рождаемостью имеет отрицательный знак. Можно допустить, что максимальная скорость увеличения численности в природных популяциях артемий определяется соотношением их дефинитивного веса и средним весом особей в популяции. Анализ показал, что средний вес особи в популяции A. salina в разных водоемах и в разные годы колеблется от 0,23 до 0,53 г, т. е. изменялся в 2,5 раза. При крайних значениях Wср/Wmax величина rmp оказывается равной, соответственно, 0, 0187 и 0,0046. Сравнивая два крайних варианта, можно отметить, что при увеличении Wср/Wmax в 2,5 раза это приводит к уменьшению rmp в 4 раза.

    Description: A set of experiments on a specific testing unit with simulation of the mussel collectors' movement in the water equaling the one under conditions of a storm is described. Comparative analysis with the nearby stable collectors with mussels was made. Three modes of fixing collectors to the supporting parts of the available marine constructions with estimation of the negative impact of waves on mussels were investigated. The experiment results allowed to improve the engineering design for three types of the marine constructions: 1) collector-carrier of the saw-shape; 2) U-shape linear comb construction; 3) construction of the vertical candle shape.
    Description: Описан комплекс экспериментальных работ на специальном стенде с имитацией перемещения коллекторов с мидиями в воде, как при штормовом волнении. Определяли временной порог появления негативного влияния колебаний на физиологическое состояние моллюсков. Сравнение проводили с моллюсками, находящимися на коллекторах в покое и расположенными в воде рядом. Исследовали три способа подвешивания коллекторов к несущим частям известных морских сооружений с определением степени отрицательного воздействия волновых колебаний на мидии. Результаты экспериментов позволили оптимизировать конструкции трех типов морских сооружений: 1) коллектора-носителя пилообразного (КНП); 2) сооружения П-образного, линейного, гребенчатого (СГЛ); 3) сооружений типа вертикальная свеча (ВС).

    Description: The current issue of the YugNIRO Proceedings (vol. 54, book 2) covers the research period of 2016-2017 and represents the output of the institute's studies in the sphere of taxonomy and biology of ichthyfauna in the area of Ninety East Ridge as well as on the moderate zone submarine rise in the Indian Ocean. Historical accounts on the long-term oceanic and technological research of AzCherNIRO (later on YugNIRO) are given. The data on size composition of the Antarctic krill Euphausia superba catches depending on catch technology are presented. CCAMLR ecosystem approach for the krill fisheries management is grounded. Feasibility of the marine protected areas formation in the Ross Sea is considered. The data on population structure of the porbeagle Lamna nasus in the South Western Atlantic are given. Some aspects of the coastal fisheries in the Azov Sea are investigated, possible scenarios of its developement are discussed. Limits on the brine shrimp cysts seasonal catches in the Crimea are grounded. Technology of the feed products processing as well as standardization of the frozen products output from aquatic biological resources of the Azov and Black Seas Basin are characterized. Description of the developed cell-automata two-dimentional model of the suspended matter transfer is provided.
    Description: Во втором томе юбилейного сборника «Трудов ЮгНИРО» за 2016-2017 годы представлены результаты исследований института в области таксономии и биологии ихтиофауны в районах Восточно-Индийского подводного хребта, а также на поднятиях умеренной зоны Индийского океана. Дан исторический анализ многолетних океанических и технологических исследований АзЧерНИРО (с 1988 года – ЮгНИРО). Приведены данные о размерном составе уловов антарктического криля Euphausia superba в зависимости от технологии лова, обоснован экосистемный подход АНТКОМ к управлению его промыслом. Рассмотрена целесообразность создания морских охраняемых районов в регионе моря Росса. Представлены данные о популяционной структуре сельдевой акулы Lamna nasus в Юго-Западной Атлантике. Приведены результаты изучения некоторых аспектов прибрежного рыболовства в Азовском море, перечислены возможные пути его развития, обоснованы ограничения сроков добычи цист артемии в Крыму. Охарактеризована технология производства кормовых продуктов, а также нормирование выхода мороженой продукции из водных биоресурсов Азово- Черноморского бассейна. Дано описание разработанной клеточно-автоматной двумерной модели переноса взвеси.

    Description: In the anniversary issue of the Proceedings of the IX International Scientific and Practical Conference «Current Fishery and Environmental Problems of the Azov and Black Seas Region», dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the Southern Scientific Research Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography (YugNIRO) - since 2017 Kerch Branch (YugNIRO) FSBSI "AzNIIRKH", research papers from various scientific institutions of the Russian Federation are presented, as well as historical background data on creation and development of the main laboratories and departments of YugNIRO. The current state of several water bodies in Russia is given. Fishery and biological characteristics of the Russian fisheries are presented for the shared stocks of the aquatic living resources from the Black Sea in 2015-2016. Prospects for development of food resources in the fresh water bodies in the southern part of Russia are considered. Methodology of management practice over the maturation process of sturgeons in aquaculture with application of ultrasound techniques is described. Biological characteristics and distribution of purpleback flying squid Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis in the Arabian Sea have been studied. Results of the YugNIRO investigations in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean have been summarized.     Description: Average values of phytoplankton abundance and biomass in the Taganrog Bay area (Azov Sea, Russia) in February-March of 2016 made up 9.18-16.013 million cells/l and 901-2,621 mg/m3. The values of quantitative development of phytoplankton in the Don R. delta during the same time period (657-184 thousand cells/l and 154-127 mg/m3) were lower than the ones in the Taganrog Bay in 14-87 and 6-20 times, respectively. Great amounts of algae in the Don R. delta in April 2016 (73 thousand cells/l and 248 mg/m3) equaled winter values. Invasion of allochthonic species of diatoms Pseudosolenia calcar-avis into the Taganrog Bay area in February-March 2016, can be related to the increase in salinity, which has been observed in this part of the sea for the last years.
    Description: Средние величины численности и биомассы фитопланктона на акватории Таганрогского залива в феврале-марте 2016 г. составили 9,18-16,013 млн. кл./л и 901-2621 мг/м3. В то же время величины количественного развития фитопланктона в дельте и русле р. Дон (657-184 тыс. кл./л и 154-127 мг/м3) уступали, соответственно, в 14-87 и 6-20 раз значениям Таганрогского залива. Обилие водорослей в дельте р. Дон в апреле 2016 г. (573 тыс. кл./л и 248 мг/м3) было на уровне зимних величин. Проникновение аллохтонного вида диатомовых водорослей Pseudosolenia calcar-avis в акваторию Таганрогского залива в феврале-марте 2016 г., вероятно, связано с наблюдавшимся в последние годы повышением солености этого района моря.
