    Description: Community detection is an important analysis task for complex networks, including bipartite networks, which consist of nodes of two types and edges connecting only nodes of different types. Many community detection methods take the number of communities in the networks as a fixed known quantity; however, it is impossible to give such information in advance in real-world networks. In our paper, we propose a projection-free Bayesian inference method to determine the number of pure-type communities in bipartite networks. This paper makes the following contributions: (1) we present the first principle derivation of a practical method, using the degree-corrected bipartite stochastic block model that is able to deal with networks with broad degree distributions, for estimating the number of pure-type communities of bipartite networks; (2) a prior probability distribution is proposed over the partition of a bipartite network; (3) we design a Monte Carlo algorithm incorporated with our proposed method and prior probability distribution. We give a demonstration of our algorithm on synthetic bipartite networks including an easy case with a homogeneous degree distribution and a difficult case with a heterogeneous degree distribution. The results show that the algorithm gives the correct number of communities of synthetic networks in most cases and outperforms the projection method especially in the networks with heterogeneous degree distributions.

    Description: Virtualization has been an efficient method to fully utilize computing resources such as servers. The way of placing virtual machines (VMs) among a large pool of servers greatly affects the performance of data center networks (DCNs). As network resources have become a main bottleneck of the performance of DCNs, we concentrate on VM placement with Traffic-Aware Balancing to evenly utilize the links in DCNs. In this paper, we first proposed a Virtual Machine Placement Problem with Traffic-Aware Balancing (VMPPTB) and then proved it to be NP-hard and designed a Longest Processing Time Based Placement algorithm (LPTBP algorithm) to solve it. To take advantage of the communication locality, we proposed Locality-Aware Virtual Machine Placement Problem with Traffic-Aware Balancing (LVMPPTB), which is a multiobjective optimization problem of simultaneously minimizing the maximum number of VM partitions of requests and minimizing the maximum bandwidth occupancy on uplinks of Top of Rack (ToR) switches. We also proved it to be NP-hard and designed a heuristic algorithm (Least-Load First Based Placement algorithm, LLBP algorithm) to solve it. Through extensive simulations, the proposed heuristic algorithm is proven to significantly balance the bandwidth occupancy on uplinks of ToR switches, while keeping the number of VM partitions of each request small enough.

    Description: In signed social networks, relationships among nodes are of the types positive (friendship) and negative (hostility). One absorbing issue in signed social networks is predicting sign of edges among people who are members of these networks. Other than edge sign prediction, one can define importance of people or nodes in networks via ranking algorithms. There exist few ranking algorithms for signed graphs; also few studies have shown role of ranking in link prediction problem. Hence, we were motivated to investigate ranking algorithms availed for signed graphs and their effect on sign prediction problem. This paper makes the contribution of using community detection approach for ranking algorithms in signed graphs. Therefore, community detection which is another active area of research in social networks is also investigated in this paper. Community detection algorithms try to find groups of nodes in which they share common properties like similarity. We were able to devise three community-based ranking algorithms which are suitable for signed graphs, and also we evaluated these ranking algorithms via sign prediction problem. These ranking algorithms were tested on three large-scale datasets: Epinions, Slashdot, and Wikipedia. We indicated that, in some cases, these ranking algorithms outperform previous works because their prediction accuracies are better.

    Description: As an extension of the classical job shop scheduling problem, the flexible job shop scheduling problem (FJSP) plays an important role in real production systems. In FJSP, an operation is allowed to be processed on more than one alternative machine. It has been proven to be a strongly NP-hard problem. Ant colony optimization (ACO) has been proven to be an efficient approach for dealing with FJSP. However, the basic ACO has two main disadvantages including low computational efficiency and local optimum. In order to overcome these two disadvantages, an improved ant colony optimization (IACO) is proposed to optimize the makespan for FJSP. The following aspects are done on our improved ant colony optimization algorithm: select machine rule problems, initialize uniform distributed mechanism for ants, change pheromone’s guiding mechanism, select node method, and update pheromone’s mechanism. An actual production instance and two sets of well-known benchmark instances are tested and comparisons with some other approaches verify the effectiveness of the proposed IACO. The results reveal that our proposed IACO can provide better solution in a reasonable computational time.

    Description: In direct proportion to the heavy increase of online information data, the attention to text categorization (classification) has also increased. In text categorization problem, namely, text classification, the goal is to classify the documents into predefined classes (categories or labels). Recently various methods in data mining have been experienced for text classification in literature except polyhedral conic function (PCF) methods. In this paper, PCFs are used to classify the documents. The separation algorithms via PCFs which include linear programming subproblems with inequality constraints are presented. Numerical experiments are done on real-world text datasets. Comparisons are made between state-of-the-art methods by presenting obtained tenfold cross-validation results, accuracy values, and running times in tables. The results verify that in text classification PCF methods are as effective in terms of accuracy values as state-of-the-art methods.

    Description: Fault tolerance is of great importance for big data systems. Although several software-based application-level techniques exist for fault security in big data systems, there is a potential research space at the hardware level. Big data needs to be processed inexpensively and efficiently, for which traditional hardware architectures are, although adequate, not optimum for this purpose. In this paper, we propose a hardware-level fault tolerance scheme for big data and cloud computing that can be used with the existing software-level fault tolerance for improving the overall performance of the systems. The proposed scheme uses the concurrent error detection (CED) method to detect hardware-level faults, with the help of Scalable Error Detecting Codes (SEDC) and its checker. SEDC is an all unidirectional error detection (AUED) technique capable of detecting multiple unidirectional errors. The SEDC scheme exploits data segmentation and parallel encoding features for assigning code words. Consequently, the SEDC scheme can be scaled to any binary data length “n” with constant latency and less complexity, compared to other AUED schemes, hence making it a perfect candidate for use in big data processing hardware. We also present a novel area, delay, and power efficient, scalable fault secure checker design based on SEDC. In order to show the effectiveness of our scheme, we (1) compared the cost of hardware-based fault tolerance with an existing software-based fault tolerance technique used in HDFS and (2) compared the performance of the proposed checker in terms of area, speed, and power dissipation with the famous Berger code and m-out-of-2m code checkers. The experimental results show that (1) the proposed SEDC-based hardware-level fault tolerance scheme significantly reduces the average cost associated with software-based fault tolerance in a big data application, and (2) the proposed fault secure checker outperforms the state-of-the-art checkers in terms of area, delay, and power dissipation.

    Description: In order to solve the prewarning problem of South-to-North Water Transfer Project safety, an intelligent cooperative prewarning method based on machine learning was proposed under the framework of intelligent information processing. Driven by the monitoring data of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, the single sensor in typical scenes was studied, and the security threshold was predicted along the vertical axis of time, firstly. With the support of the data correlation calculation, the sensors in the typical scene were intelligently grouped, and the study objectives were changed into sensor grouping, secondly. Then, the nonlinear regression model between the single sensor and the multisensors was built on the time cross section, and the model was used to dynamically calculate the safety threshold of the current sensor for the second time. Finally, in the framework of intelligent information processing, a double verification mechanism was proposed to support the construction of the intelligent prewarning method for the safety of South-to-North Water Transfer Project. The paper collected the monitoring data from November 2015 to September 2016 in the typical scenarios. The experimental results showed that the methods constructed in the paper can be able to identify the abnormal causes of data sudden jump effectively and give the different level prewarning. The method provides a strong theoretical support for further manual investigation work.

    Description: We propose and evaluate a novel strategy for tuning the performance of a class of stencil computations on Graphics Processing Units. The strategy uses a machine learning model to predict the optimal way to load data from memory followed by a heuristic that divides other optimizations into groups and exhaustively explores one group at a time. We use a set of 104 synthetic OpenCL stencil benchmarks that are representative of many real stencil computations. We first demonstrate the need for auto-tuning by showing that the optimization space is sufficiently complex that simple approaches to determining a high-performing configuration fail. We then demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on NVIDIA and AMD GPUs. Relative to a random sampling of the space, we find configurations that are 12%/32% faster on the NVIDIA/AMD platform in 71% and 4% less time, respectively. Relative to an expert search, we achieve 5% and 9% better performance on the two platforms in 89% and 76% less time. We also evaluate our strategy for different stencil computational intensities, varying array sizes and shapes, and in combination with expert search.

    Description: In any alive and nontrivial program, the source code naturally evolves along the lifecycle for many reasons such as the implementation of new functionality, the optimization of a bottleneck, or the refactoring of an obscure function. Frequently, these code changes affect various different functions and modules, so it can be difficult to know whether the correct behaviour of the previous version has been preserved in the new version. In this paper, we face this problem in the context of the Erlang language, where most developers rely on a previously defined test suite to check the behaviour preservation. We propose an alternative approach to automatically obtain a test suite that specifically focusses on comparing the old and new versions of the code. Our test case generation is directed by a sophisticated combination of several already existing tools such as TypEr, CutEr, and PropEr; and it introduces novel ideas such as allowing the programmer to choose one or more expressions of interest that must preserve the behaviour, or the recording of the sequences of values to which those expressions are evaluated. All the presented work has been implemented in an open-source tool that is publicly available on GitHub.

    Description: This paper proposes a novel and efficient clustering algorithm for probability density functions based on k-medoids. Further, a scheme used for selecting the powerful initial medoids is suggested, which speeds up the computational time significantly. Also, a general proof for convergence of the proposed algorithm is presented. The effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed algorithm are verified and compared with various existing algorithms through both artificial and real datasets in terms of adjusted Rand index, computational time, and iteration number. The numerical results reveal an outstanding performance of the proposed algorithm as well as its potential applications in real life.
