    Description: Determining national carbon stocks is essential in the framework of ongoing climate change mitigation actions. Presently, assessment of carbon stocks in the context of greenhouse gas (GHG)-reporting on a nation-by-nation basis focuses on the terrestrial realm, i.e., carbon held in living plant biomass and soils, and on potential changes in these stocks in response to anthropogenic activities. However, while the ocean and underlying sediments store substantial quantities of carbon, this pool is presently not considered in the context of national inventories. The ongoing disturbances to both terrestrial and marine ecosystems as a consequence of food production, pollution, climate change and other factors, as well as alteration of linkages and C-exchange between continental and oceanic realms, highlight the need for a better understanding of the quantity and vulnerability of carbon stocks in both systems. We present a preliminary comparison of the stocks of organic carbon held in continental margin sediments within the Exclusive Economic Zone of maritime nations with those in their soils. Our study focuses on Namibia, where there is a wealth of marine sediment data, and draws comparisons with sediment data from two other countries with different characteristics, which are Pakistan and the United Kingdom. Results indicate that marine sediment carbon stocks in maritime nations can be similar in magnitude to those of soils. Therefore, if human activities in these areas are managed, carbon stocks in the oceanic realm—particularly over continental margins—could be considered as part of national GHG inventories. This study shows that marine sediment organic carbon stocks can be equal in size or exceed terrestrial carbon stocks of maritime nations. This provides motivation both for improved assessment of sedimentary carbon inventories and for reevaluation of the way that carbon stocks are assessed and valued. The latter carries potential implications for the management of human activities on coastal environments and for their GHG inventories.

A unifying framework based on ecological theory, that considers fundamental and realized niches, combined with metabolic, evolutionary, and climate change studies, is needed to provide the mechanistic understanding required to evaluate and forecast the future of marine communities, ecosystems, and their services.

    Description: Dataset: Symbiodinium Fv/Fm over a temperature gradient
    Description: Coral photosynthetic endosymbionts (Symbiodinium) are phylogenetically very diverse, yet the extent of inter- and intraspecific functional variation within clades remains largely underexplored. Understanding this variability will be critical for future research on climate change mediated responses. A properly functioning thylakoid membrane is essential for optimal photosynthetic performance both in free-living and in hospite conditions. Here we analyze the thylakoid membrane melting points of 13 Symbiodinium strains from species in Clades B and A, grown at both control (26 °C) and high temperature (31 °C). We observed a broad range of responses to thermal stress regardless of taxonomic rank. Our results support and augment a growing body of literature demonstrating that functional differences among Symbiodinium spp. are as distinct at lower taxonomic levels (i.e. interspecific) as they are among major clades. These findings highlight the importance of assessing the variability of plastid traits across the Symbiodinium tree.     Description: At a proximal level, the physiological impacts of global climate change on ectothermic organisms are manifest as changes in body temperatures. Especially for plants and animals exposed to direct solar radiation, body temperatures can be substantially different from air temperatures. We deployed biomimetic sensors that mimic the thermal characteristics of intertidal mussels at 66 sites worldwide, from 1998-present. Loggers recorded temperatures at 10-15 minute intervals nearly continuously at multiple intertidal elevations. Comparisons against direct measurements of mussel tissue temperature suggest errors of ~2.0-2.5°C, during daily fluctuations that often exceed 15°-20°C. Geographic patterns in thermal stress based on biomimetic logger measurements were generally far more complex than anticipated based only on “habitat” level measurements, and show that animals are reaching temperatures far above air temperature on sunny days. This unique data set provides a means of assessing spatial and temporal variability in intertidal thermal stress, and links physiological measurements to field patterns.     Description: The presented data suggest that acclimatization times of exponentially growing diatoms to environmental perturbations may be weeks to months, rather than days to weeks. The response of acclimatized T. weissflogii to pCO2 depended on irradiance and temperature and was highly interactive, non-linear, and non-uniform. A very significant negative effect of pCO2 was observed under growth conditions that were light-, and temperature-limited; a smaller, but still significant negative response was seen under light-limiting growth conditions, whereas pCO2 did not affect growth rates of T. weissflogii under light-saturated growth conditions. Cell quotas of organic carbon, nitrogen, or chlorophyll a were linked to growth rate. The cell-normalized production of transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) was positively correlated with POC cell quotas, with some minor impact of irradiance and pCO2 on the relationship. This correlation of TEP production with carbon cell quotas is consistent with the hypothesis that extracellular release is an inherent component of cell metabolism. Results suggest that elevated pCO2 functions as an (additional) metabolic stressor for T. weissflogii and that the interaction of different stressors determines growth rates and cell characteristics in a complex, non-linear relationship.

    Description: Long-term measurements of ecological effects of warming are often not statistically significant because of annual variability or signal noise. These are reduced in indicators that filter or reduce the noise around the signal and allow effects of climate warming to emerge. In this way, certain indicators act as medium pass filters integrating the signal over years-to-decades. In the Alaskan Arctic, the 25-year record of warming of air temperature revealed no significant trend, yet environmental and ecological changes prove that warming is affecting the ecosystem. The useful indicators are deep permafrost temperatures, vegetation and shrub biomass, satellite measures of canopy reflectance (NDVI), and chemical measures of soil weathering. In contrast, the 18-year record in the Greenland Arctic revealed an extremely high summer air-warming of 1.3°C/decade; the cover of some plant species increased while the cover of others decreased. Useful indicators of change are NDVI and the active layer thickness.

    Description: The radium isotopes 226Ra and 228Ra can provide important data on the dynamics of deep-sea hydrothermal plumes that travel the oceans for decades and have great impact on the ocean chemistry. This study focuses on parameters important for obtaining low detection limits for 228Ra using gamma-ray spectrometry. It is present at mBq-levels in samples collected during the US GEOTRACES 2013 cruise to the Southeast Pacific Ocean.
