    Description: The frequencies of four Q-branch lines of H2 and five Q-branch lines of D2 were measured as a function of density, and their shifts were observed to be in the linear region. The individual slopes and extrapolated zero density frequency of each line was determined. Hydrogen was measured for polarizability using the integrated intensity of the Q1(0) and S1(1), H2 absorption line. A highly automated technique for determining the response function of the spectrometer using digitally recorded data is presented. For the Q1(0) and Q1(1) lines of H2 the halfwidths were measured as a function of electric field intensity at constant pressure, and again at several densities and compared to previously measured widths. Technical and operational details of equipment built for this experiment, and for the five-meter Littrow spectrometer used, are described. Modifications of the spectrometer optics to accept the Stark cell are discussed.

    Description: High molecular weight perfluorocarbon polyether gums were obtained by photolysis of perfluorodienes and discyl fluorides containing a perfluorocarbon polyether backbond. The materials obtained are represented by chemical formulas. A method was developed whereby reactive acyl fluoride and trifluorovinyl end groups are converted into inert structures. In order to investigate the possible preparation of difunctional molecules which may be useful in polymer synthesis, the reactions of hexafluoropropene oxide (HFPO) with Grignard and organolithium reagents have been studied. Reactions of various nucleophilic reagents with HFPO were also investigated.

    Description: The dynamic nuclear polarization of hydrogen nuclei by the solid effect in single crystals of samarium doped lanthanum magnesium nitrate (Sm:LMN) was studied theoretically and experimentally. The equations of evolution governing the dynamic nuclear polarization by the solid effect were derived in detail using the spin temperature theory and the complete expression for the steady state enhancement of the nuclear polarization was calculated. Experimental enhancements of the proton polarization were obtained for eight crystals at 9.2 GHz and liquid helium temperatures. The samarium concentration ranged from 0.1 percent to 1.1 percent as determined by X-ray fluorescence. A peak enhancement of 181 was measured for a 1.1 percent Sm:LMN crystal at 3.0 K. The maximum enhancements extrapolated with the theory using the experimental data for peak enhancement versus microwave power and correcting for leakage, agree with the ideal enhancement (240 in this experiment) within experimental error for three of the crystals.

    Description: In the evolution of life forms nonphotosynthetic mechanisms are developed. The question remains whether a total life system could evolve which is not dependent upon photosynthesis. In trying to visualize life on other planets, the photosynthetic process has problems. On Mars, the high intensity of light at the surface is a concern and alternative mechanisms need to be defined and analyzed. In the UV search for alternate mechanisms, several different areas may be identified. These involve activated inorganic compounds in the atmosphere, such as the products of photodissociation of carbon dioxide and the organic material which may be created by natural phenomena. In addition, a life system based on the pressure of the atmospheric constituents, such as carbon dioxide, is a possibility. These considerations may be important for the understanding of evolutionary processes of life on another planet. Model systems which depend on these alternative mechanisms are defined and related to presently planned and future planetary missions.
