    Description: Eight pyroclastic fall deposits have been identified in cores of Late Pleistocene-Holocene marine sediments from the Ross Sea (Antarctica), and their components, granulometry and clast morphologies were analysed. Sedimentological, petrographic and geochemical analysis of clasts, with 40Ar-39Ar dating of alkali feldspar grains, indicate that during this period at least five explosive eruptions of mid to high intensity (plinian to subplinian) occurred, and that three of these eruptions took place from Mount Melbourne volcanic complex, between 137.1 ± 3.4 and 12 ka. Geochemical comparison of the studied tephra with microand crypto-tephra recovered from deep Antarctic ice cores and from nearby englacial tephra at Frontier Mountain indicates that eruptive activity in the Melbourne Volcanic Province of northern Victoria Land was intense during the Late Pleistocene-Holocene, but only a general area of provenance for the majority of the identified tephra can be identified.

    Description: In this paper, we describe the 1809 eruption of Mt. Etna, Italy, which represents one historical rare case in which it is possible to observe details of the internal structure of the feeder system. This is possible thanks to the presence of two large pit craters located in the middle of the eruptive fracture field that allow studying a section of the shallow feeder system. Along the walls of one of these craters, we analysed well-exposed cross sections of the uppermost 15–20 m of the feeder system and related volcanic products. Here, we describe the structure, morphology and lithology of this portion of the 1809 feeder system, including the host rock which conditioned the propagation of the dyke, and compare the results with other recent eruptions. Finally, we propose the dynamic model of the magma behaviour inside a laterally-propagating feeder dyke, demonstrating how this dynamic triggered important changes in the eruptive style (from effusive/Strombolian to phreatomagmatic) during the same eruption. Our results are also useful for hazard assessment related to the development of flank eruptions, potentially the most hazardous type of eruption from basaltic volcanoes in densely urbanized areas, such as Mt. Etna.

    Description: The eruptive activity of Etna volcano is well known in detail due to the integration of numerous geological and historical investigations. The study of historical sources of the volcano’s activity started in the sixteenth century and has been reported in several catalogues of the eruptions published mainly in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. We have found a new document written in 1643 by the Fiscal Prosecutor of the High Court for the viceroy of Sicily in which he reported earthquakes occurring in the small town of Troina. The document also describes an eruption taking place in the Bronte region of Etna between 18 and 28 of July that was previously unknown in current historical catalogues, even those compiled by recent historiographical studies. This eruption clearly produced the volcanic products outcropping in the upper NWflank, shown on the new geological map of Etna as the Val di Cannizzola lava flow. The July 1643 eruption was a brief event with the emission of a roughly 2.7-km-long lava flow of very low volume (3–4×106 m3). It occurred in a period characterised instead by long-lasting and high-lavavolume eruptions that preceded the large and destructive 1669 eruption, the main event that has occurred on Etna in historical time.
