    Description: The proposal of Harwit and Salpeter (1973) that gamma-ray bursts are due to impacts of comets onto neutron stars is examined further. It is assumed that most stars are formed with comet clouds similar to the Oort comet cloud which surrounds the sun, and it is suggested that there are at least four mechanisms by wich neutron stars may be formed while retaining their comet clouds: a spherically symmetric supernova explosion in an isolated star, accretion-induced collapse of a white dwarf in a cataclysmic variable with a very low mass secondary, accretion-induced collapse of a white dwarf in a wide binary with a low-mass giant companion, and coalescence of a close binary composed of two white dwarfs. Estimates are given of the cometary impact rates for such systems. It is suggested that if the wide binary scenario is correct, optical bursts may arise from the impact of comets onto the white dwarf remnant of the giant companion.

    Notes: Light and electron microscopy shows the osteoderms of Anguis fragilis to be small, flat disks located in the dermis along the adult trunk: microradiography established the extent of the mineralization.Each osteoderm coincides exactly with an epidermal fold forming the keratinized scales characteristic of the skin of reptiles.Sections perpendicular to the surface show two mineralized layers differing in histological and histochemical characteristics and in fine structure, although both contain collagen fibrils. The structure of each layer can be related to that of the surrounding dermis.The outer superficial layer located in the loose dermis contains few collagen bundles that form a discontinuous sheet at the upper surface of the osteoderms. This superficial layer appears to be constituted of units separated by furrows and is composed of woven fibered bone.The basal plate comprises stratified lamellae formed of parallel-oriented collagen fibrils; the fibrils of successive lamellae lie at right angles. The densely packed collagen fibrils of the basal plate are distributed similarly to those of the dense dermis within which it lies. This layer exhibits structural and histochemical characteristics of a lamellar bone.The presence of two different layers in the osteoderms of Anguis fragilis may reflect their mode of formation, which consists of the deposit of mineral crystals in the preexisting dermal tissue. This mineralization process, considered as a “metaplastic ossification,” may reflect the potentiality retained by the dermis of reptiles to form mineralized structures.

    Description: Results are presented from the Crab Pulsar PSR 0531 + 21 for energies of 0.3-30 MeV. For energies of 1-30 MeV, the absolute phase and separation of the first and second pulses 12.9 + or - 0.3 ms, widths of the pulses 2.2 + or - 0.5 ms FWHM, and 1.6 + or - 0.4 ms FWHM, ratio of the counts in the second to the first pulse 0.64 + or - 0.33 and ratio of counts in the interpulse region to the total pulsed counts 0.17 + or - 0.30 are compared to te results vor energies, E greater than 50 MeV and their variations with time. Values from the phase plots for E greater than 0.3 MeV are compared with low-energy gamma rays during 1970 through 1980 from several experiments with energies from about 20 to 360 keV. The above suggest different production mechanisms for low- and high-energy gamma rays with a transition at about 1 MeV. Derived fluxes from 0.3 to 30 MeV confirm a previously derived power law.

    Description: The primary period of interest during September 1985 is the few days surrounding the ICE encounter with comet Giacobini-Zinner(G-Z) which occurred at 1102 UT on 11 September. To place into perspective the actual in situ observations measured during the comet encounter it is necessary to understand the prevailing solar and interplanetary conditions. Starting two solar rotations prior to and extending through the rotation after the encounter the interplanetary stream structure was very uniform, similar to the 1973-4 long-lived structure. Prior to the arrival of the corotating high-speed stream at 5 UT on 11 September, ICE was already measuring the effects of G-Z on the surrounding interplanetary medium. An overview of available solar, interplanetary, and ICE data for the cometary interval is presented.

    Description: In an analysis of the Jovian ion events, Baker et al. (1984) have found that there appears to be a spectral hardening as the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) changed orientation from the postnoon to a prenoon connection point. It was also observed that ion events were accompanied by long-period (approximately 10 min) waves whose presence was weakly related to a decrease in the ion anisotropy. The present investigation examines in substantial detail the development of the ion energy spectrum over the full range (approximately 30 keV to approximately 4 MeV). The results of the investigation show that the energy spectra are dominated by heavy ions (presumed to be oxygen and sulfur) at higher (approximately equal to or greater than 300 keV) energies.

    Description: Magnetic field lines in a plasma reconnect at a rate scaled by the Alfven speed. In a partially ionized gas there are two natural Alfven speeds: one determined by the ionized mass density alone, which applies when ion-neutral friction is negligible, and one determined by the total mass density, which applies when ion-neutral friction is strong. When the ionization fraction is low, as in a dense molecular cloud, these two speeds differ by several orders of magnitude. Both time-dependent tearing modes and steady-state magnetic reconnection in partially ionized gas are considered, and the regimes in which the charged and neutral components are strongly, intermediately, and weakly coupled are delineated. Molecular clouds are probably in the intermediate regime, while reconnection in solar prominences probably has strong ion-neutral coupling. Reconnection proceeds more rapidly when coupling is not strong.

    Description: Hydromagnetic dynamo theory is applied to the problem of magnetic field amplification in the epoch after recombination but prior to galaxy formation. Large-scale density fluctuations acquire angular momentum from tidal torques exerted by neighboring fluctuations, and small-scale subfluctuations possess helicity due to the Coriolis forces associated with the rotation of the large-scale host fluctuations. Cosmic expansion and the interaction of matter with the ambient radiation field are taken into account. Despite many uncertainties, it is concluded that significant dynamo amplification may have occurred.

    Description: Ambipolar drift in turbulent fluids are considered. Using mean-field electrodynamics, a two-scale theory originally used to study hydromagnetic dynamos, it is shown that magnetic fields can be advected by small-scale magnetosonic (compressional) turbulence or generated by Alfvenic (helical) turbulence. A simple dynamo theory is made and is compared with standard theories in which dissipation is caused by turbulent diffusion. The redistribution of magnetic flux in interstellar clouds is also discussed.

    Notes: In order to study the effect of glucose on the differentiation of cultured human colon cancer cells, a subpopulation of HT-29 cells was selected for its capacity to grow in the total absence of sugar. These cells (GIc-cells) exhibit, after confluency, an enterocytic differentiation, in contrast to cells grown with glucose (Glc+ cells), which always remain undifferentiated. The differentiation is characterized by a polarization of the cell layer with apical brush borders and tight junctions, and by the presence of sucrase-isomaltase. The differentiation of Glc-cells is reversible: the addition of glucose to postcon-fluent cultures of Glc- cells results in an inhibiting effect on the expression of sucrase-isomaltase; switching growing cultures of Glc-cells to the Glc+ medium for several passages results in a progressive reversion to the undifferentiated state, which is completed after seven passages. The dedifferentiation process is associated with a parallel, passage-related, increase in the rates of glucose consumption and lactic acid production, and decreases of intracellular glycogen content, which return to the values of the undifferentiated original Glc+ cells. The values of these metabolic parameters are correlated, at each passage, with the degree of dedifferentiation of the cells. When these dedifferentiated cells, after having been cultured in Glc+ medium for 20 passages, are switched back to the Glc- medium, they readily grow without mortality, and reexpress the same enterocytic differentiation as the parent Glc- cells. These results show that the capacity of this subpopulation to grow and differentiate in the absence of sugar is a stable characteristic. They further suggest that glucose metabolism interferes with the program of differentiation of HT-29 cells.
