Description: Despite an absence of freshwater exploitation, the adult salmon run in the Matamek River, Quebec, declined during 1975-1980 to 〈23% of the level thought to occur there prior to 1967. Returns in 1979 and 1980 of adults tagged as smolts were 1.0% and 0.9%, respectively. Numbers of emigrating smolts and their corresponding adult returns are not significantly correlated, although we observed a trend towards more salmon (2 sea year fish) returning with larger numbers of migrating smolts. Since 1967 there is noted a decrease in the age at which returning adults smolted and females appear to now constitute a larger percentage of returning grilse and salmon. These, and other changes in life history characteristics, appear to be caused solely by commercial exploitation.

Description: This report describes the collection of water property data from EcoMapper AUVs during the R/V Knorr 209-1 cruise as part of the SPURS (Salinity Processes Upper-ocean Regional Study) project. Post-processing was required to improve the quality of the raw data, particularly salinity, and is documented herein. Initial results from temperature and salinity records are presented. The measurements are concentrated in the upper 10 meters of the mixed layer during calm conditions, and reveal significant diurnal warming (up to 3°C) and salinification (up to 0.1 psu) of the surface (〈 1 meter) layer. The mixing promoted by the motion of the research vessel destroys this shallow stratification, so the ability of the AUVs to sample undisturbed water hundreds of meters from the ship was critical to the effort of accurately resolving it.

Description: Hydrographic data are presented from three cruises to Warm Core Ring 82-B during April-August 1982. These data include a sampling of the 2 db pressure, temperature, salinity and oxygen measurements obtained with a CTD-02 profiler, manufactured by Neil Brown Instrument Systems, together with water sample measurements of salinity, oxygen, silica, nitrate and phosphate. Charts showing the station positions and selected profiles of the various parameters are presented. Bi-monthly cruises aboard the R/V Endeavor show only slight changes in the ring between April and June. Interactions between the ring and the Gulf Stream before the August cruise however, reduced the volume of the central core of the ring by about 90 percent.

Description: Improvements in the measurement of salinity and dissolved oxygen during the past few years at WHOI have increased the accuracy of salinity observations to +/- 0.001 ppt and that of dissolved oxygen determinations to +/- 0.04 ml/1. These improvements are attributable to the careful maintenance of the sample collection and analysis equipment, the construction of portable, sea going laboratories in which the temperature is constant to +/- 1 degree C and the skillful use of an Autosal 8400-A salinometer and a Metrohm Titroprocessor by well trained technicians. An automated data logging system eliminates transcription errors and facilitates the timely calibration of the CTD sensors.

Description: This report is part of a research project conducted at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to improve the flight characteristics of CTD instrument packages. Improvement of these cable lowered instrument packages could allow their use in more severe weather conditions. It could improve the quality of the measurements. This·report presents the development of a simplified mathematical model of the CTD package flight characteristics. This computer model was exercised to perform a sensitivity analysis of different versions of CTD packages. Part of the research project includes scale model testing. The second part of the report discusses pertinent flow similarity criteria and proposes a scheme for building a CTD half scale model. Finally, recommendations to improve the hydrodynamic behaviour of the present CTD configuration are summarized at the end of the report.

Description: From the Forward: The idea for an Exploratory Workshop on Fisheries Sociology emerged from informal discussions held at the 1983 Rural Sociological Society meetings. Planning for the Exploratory Workshop was undertaken by the two of us (Bailey and Harris) with the assistance of Peter Sinclair and Christopher Vanderpool. We sought to identify persons working in different areas of the sociology of fisheries who could present review papers on their areas of inquiry. The papers in this volume are the result of that effort. At the same time, we sought to identify persons who would be interested in attending such a workshop• By combining our personal networks, the mailing list of the Fisheries Anthropologist at the National Marine Fisheries Service (Peter Fricke), and the list of attendees at two sessions on fisheries organized by Bailey at the 1984 Rural Sociological Society meetings, we developed a mailing list of 83 sociologists working on some aspect of fisheries. Invitations to attend the workshop were sent to those persons. In response to the invitation, 24 sociologists attended the Workshop. They came from eleven states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, three provinces of Canada, and Norway. They represented work in both industrialized and developing nations, in subsistence, recreational and commercial fisheries, and in aquaculture.

Description: This description of the small-scale sector of the Southern New England (Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut) fishery includes information on the fishermen (their ages, education, experience, occupational training, family involvement and reasons for fishing) and the physical characteristics of the fleet (the boats and gear). Fishing patterns are analyzed by species, geographical areas and seasons. The economic structure of small-scale fishing is described in terms of investment, net and gross earnings, fuel costs, crew payments systems and marketing arrangements. Management implications of this information and analyses are included.
