    Description: Mito: relato explicativo, simbólico y dinámico, de uno o varios acontecimientos extraordinarios personales con referente trascendente, que carece en principio de testimonio histórico, se compone de una serie de elementos invariantes reducibles a temas y sometidos a crisis, que presenta un carácter conflictivo, emotivo, funcional, ritual y remite siempre a una cosmogonía o a una escatología absolutas, particulares o universales. Esta definición, general, fría e indeterminada, requiere un tiempo, un espacio, y sobre todo una conciencia que la viva. El mito no es un constructo mental ajeno a las vicisitudes socioculturales: lleva marcada en su piel y sus entrañas la huella de cada individuo y sociedad que lo vio nacer; pero también sabe adaptarse a las condiciones del nuevo tiempo que lo acoge. Mitos de hoy narra esa tensión del mito por mantenerse vivo en el terreno, aparentemente inhóspito, de un mundo desengañado. La Mitocrítica Cultural, aquí puesta en práctica, combina las herramientas tradicionales de la mitocrítica con factores no considerados sistemáticamente por la crítica precedente: la globalización, la inmanencia y el consumismo. Ofrece así una modesta contribución a la tarea de identificar, analizar y sintetizar la tipología de las manifestaciones del mito en la literatura, las artes y los medios de comunicación contemporáneos.     Description: Thinking about violence is the philosophical reason expressed in the research condensed in this book. Violence, as the establishment of evil in history, is the unsolvable expression of the inertia and chaos crossing societies, particularly those of today. From which philosophical horizon do we seek to frame the present analysis of violence? It is not easy to determine a single view of the problem because from the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes to the Martinique thinker Frantz Fanon referred to the political power and social segregation exercised by violence. We will go to the mimetic theory proposed by the French thinker, René Girard (1923-2005) in the interest of delimitation. We believe that this philosophical approach allows us to think about violence in the dynamic terms of difference and sameness. The mimetic theory explains the origin of violence in direct relation to the human desire for another (otherness) that seeks to be imitated to the point of its ontological appropriation. Desire mimics another way of desiring, which explains the chain reaction of a violent appropriation that goes through gestures, ways of being, objects, persons, etc. Difference, therefore, is one of the elements integrating the analysis of violence from the mimetic desire, since it is a way of perceiving that human life in social terms exists due to the existence of the other, who is the referent of imitation and at the same time of rivalry. In this order of ideas, the study of violence proposed in this research intertwines the concepts of difference, imitation, otherness, and rivalry.

    Description: Pensar en la violencia es el motivo filosófico que se expresa en las investigaciones que se condensan en este libro. La violencia, como la instauración del mal en la historia, es la expresión irresoluble de la inercia y el caos que atraviesa a las sociedades, particularmente a las actuales. ¿Desde cuál horizonte filosófico buscamos enmarcar el presente análisis a la violencia? No es sencillo determinar una sola mirada al problema, pues desde el filósofo inglés -Thomas Hobbes hasta el pensador de Martinica Franz Fanón hicieron referencia al poder político y de segregación social que ejerce la violencia. En aras de la delimitación acudiremos a la teoría mimética propuesta por el pensador francés René Girard. (1923-2005). Consideramos que esta apuesta filosófica permite pensar la violencia en los términos dinámicos de la diferencia y la mismidad. La teoría mimética explica el origen de la violencia en relación directa con el deseo humano de otro (alteridad) que busca ser imitado hasta su apropiación ontológica. Es decir, el deseo imita otro modo de desear y esto explica la reacción en cadena de una apropiación violenta que va desde los gestos, las maneras de ser, los objetos, las personas, etc. La diferencia es entonces uno de los elementos que integran el análisis de la violencia desde el deseo mimético, ya que es una forma percibir que la vida humana en términos sociales existe debido a la existencia del otro, que es referente de la imitación y al mismo tiempo de la rivalidad. En este orden de ideas en el estudio de la violencia que se propone en esta investigación se entrelazan los conceptos de diferencia, imitación, alteridad y rivalidad.

    Description: The Road to Batemans Bay is the story of competing ventures to create 'the Great Southern Township' on the South Coast of New South Wales in the early 1840s. The idea of developing the furthest reaches of settlement was linked to the hopes of southern woolgrowers for a road from their properties to the coast, over the Great Dividing Range. The township proponents dreamed that having a quicker and cheaper connection to Sydney would allow them to open a port second only to Port Jackson. The scene begins with the proposed coastal township of St Vincent, in an age of optimism: settlement is expanding, exports are growing and land prices are soaring, generating Australia’s first land boom. Before long, however, the colony experiences a catastrophic economic depression whose ‘pestilential breath’ infects those with a stake in the coastal townships. Alastair Greig follows the fate of these individuals, while also speculating on the broader fate of South Coast development during the mid-nineteenth century. Greig gives a unique insight into many aspects of colonial life—including the worlds of Sydney’s merchants, auctioneers, land speculators, surveyors, map-makers and lawyers—as well as its maritime challenges. The Road to Batemans Bay is a chronicle of how Australia first developed its land-gambling habit and how land speculation led to the road to ruin.

    Description: El presente volumen contiene una edición contrastada y anotada en letras latinas de las cuatro adaptaciones sefardíes de Robinson Crusoe. La edición de textos va precedida por un estudio preliminar que abarca una breve introducción a la narrativa sefardí moderna en la que se comentan los comienzos de la literatura secular en judeoespañol. A continuación, se presentan las ediciones judías de Robinson Crusoe, esto es, las adaptaciones asquenazíes en yídish y en hebreo, y las sefardíes en judeoespañol. La obra se completa con un estudio comparativo lingüístico-literario que se centra en la judaización de los textos y su adaptación para el público sefardí, haciendo hincapié también en los fenómenos lingüísticos derivados del hecho de tratarse de la traducción de un original hebreo.

Drawing upon this expertise over the past years, this book reflects on multidisciplinarity in the built environment and its implementation in education on the built environment. How should one approach multidisciplinarity in education and practice? What encompasses its core elements, benefits, and challenges? By addressing these questions, the book aims to inform students and practitioners within the realm of the built environment by sharing insights from experiences in multidisciplinary education. It presents eight conclusions regarding the future of multidisciplinary education and, thereby, seeks to contribute to a more humane and sustainable future for cities: 1.Process is central to multidisciplinary collaboration. Negotiating positions, ensuring an environment of respect, balance and open-mindedness, and setting a common vocabulary. 2.Multidisciplinarity can be a way to foster innovation. It triggers complementarity and confrontation. As with any innovation, there is potential for greater outcomes, but, at the same time, extra risks emerge. These need to be managed. 3.Multidisciplinarity could be better integrated into organisational structures. 4.Disciplinarity and multidisciplinarity are in mutual coexistence. They are inseparable. They can complement and contradict each other. 5.Problem precedes solution, not the opposite. Framing the problem, or ‘problematizing’, is a considerable share of the actual solution. This is particularly applicable to multidisciplinarity. 6.Multidisciplinarity is by nature composed of fluid boundaries. Navigating through an enormous diversity of perspectives requires agility, flexibility, independence, spirit of adventure and embracing uncertainty. 7.Professionals should be trained as ‘T-shape’: grounded in their field while able to dialogue with other fields. 8.Both generalists and specialists are needed. Education should provide opportunities for both.

    Description: This reprint features contributions from the conference DHA41. Dyes in History and Archaeology (DHA) is an annual international conference that focuses on the academic discussion of dyes and organic pigments which have been used in the past. Every year since 1982, this meeting has drawn together conservators; curators; (technical) art historians; craftspeople; artists; independent scholars; and scientists and academics from museums, universities, research centers, and other public or private institutions. Their common interest is to delve deeply into the history, production, application, and properties of organic colorants, as well as their analytical characterization and identification, often in textile objects, but also in other substrates as well as painted surfaces. In the autumn of 2022, the 41st DHA conference was hosted by the Swedish National Heritage Board in Visby. The abstracts are published on the DiVA portal (Digitala Vetenskapliga Arkivet), and many of the presented posters are available for download from the conference program.     Description: No country has managed to develop beyond a subsistence economy without ensuring at least minimum access to electricity for the majority of its population. Yet many sub-Saharan African countries struggle to meet demand. Why is this, and what can be done to reduce energy poverty and further Africa's development? Examining the politics and processes surrounding electricity infrastructure, provision and reform, the author provides an overview of historical andcontemporary debates about access in the sub-continent, and explores the shifting role and influence of national governments and of multilateral agencies in energy reform decisions. He describes a challenging political environment for electricity supply, with African governments becoming increasingly frustrated with the rules and the processes of multilateral donors. Civil society also began to question reform choices, and governments in turn looked to new development partners, such as China, to chart a fresh path of energy transformation. Drawing on over fifteen years of research on Uganda, which has one of the lowest levels of access to electricity in Africa and has struggled to construct several, large hydroelectric dams on the Nile, Gore argues that there is a critical need to recognize how the changing political and social context in African countries, and globally, has affected the capacity to fulfil national energy goals, minimize energy poverty and transform economies.

    Description: People are now more liberated to give meaning to their life and to select values they deem important. What effect does this have on conversations about meaning and spirituality with the upcoming generation? Nowadays, shared religious and church practices are not as prevalent as they once were. Is a personal testimony of how meaning and spirituality have developed in one's own life the or a way of communicating something to children, pupils, and students? One way of sharing a testimony is the 'spiritual autobiography', a practice that was developed in the US and later brought to the Netherlands by Jannet Delver. It is now used in universities and higher vocational schools. Also for group discussions with clients, writing and sharing one's spiritual biography has been found to contribute to (re)finding sources of strength in difficult times. In this book, the method is applied in an intergenerational context through a series of letters between the editor and his daughters Elsemarijn and Janneleen, along with an accompanying discussion. Additionally, many professionals and scientists provide their – personal – perspectives. Living as a search for the meaning of life need not be laborious, but rather engaging and contagious.

    Description: The book presents the biographies and work lists of 126 Finnish women composers born between 1784 and 1909. Based on large-scale archival research, it is the first comprehensive historical account of Finnish women composers and their cultural heritage. The authors draw on feminist music history and the sociohistorical approach to find out who these women were, what kind of music they wrote, and how their careers reflected European cultural and social history. The treatise highlights the influence of girls’ schools, women’s suffrage movements and other socio-political developments on the musical culture of women. Concepts such as “composer”, “woman” and “Finnish” were assumed to be open and inclusive throughout the research, in terms of both musical style and diversity in cultural background. In concentrating on music-making by women, the book opens up radically new vistas on Finland’s music and cultural history, and it rectifies previous erroneous conceptions about women’s composership and their artistic work. In short, it exposes the richness in the sonic and intellectual heritage of Finnish women composers, as well as its significance in society today.

    Description: Sensors are everywhere. Small, flexible, economical, and computationally powerful, they operate ubiquitously in environments. They compile massive amounts of data, including information about air, water, and climate. Never before has such a volume of environmental data been so broadly collected or so widely available. Grappling with the consequences of wiring our world, Program Earth examines how sensor technologies are programming our environments. As Jennifer Gabrys points out, sensors do not merely record information about an environment. Rather, they generate new environments and environmental relations. At the same time, they give a voice to the entities they monitor: to animals, plants, people, and inanimate objects. This book looks at the ways in which sensors converge with environments to map ecological processes, to track the migration of animals, to check pollutants, to facilitate citizen participation, and to program infrastructure. Through discussing particular instances where sensors are deployed for environmental study and citizen engagement across three areas of environmental sensing, from wild sensing to pollution sensing and urban sensing, Program Earth asks how sensor technologies specifically contribute to new environmental conditions.     Description: Current systems design and decision management methodologies can be single-sided, ignoring or failing to capture the dynamic interplay between multi-stakeholder preferences (‘what they want’) and system performances (‘what they can’). In addition, these methodologies often contain fundamental modelling errors and do not provide single best-fit solutions. This leaves designers or decision-makers without unique answers to their problems. Above all, mainstream higher education primarily applies instructivist and research-based learning methods, and therefore does not adequately prepare students for designing solutions to future complex problems. This book introduces both a state-of-the-art participatory design methodology (Odesys), and a design-based learning concept (ODL), which together overcome the aforementioned issues. Odesys is a pure act of open design integration to confront conflicting socio-technical interests and is the key to unlocking these complexities to deliver socially responsible systems. Odesys’ design engine, the Preferendus, enables stakeholders to cooperatively identify their best-fit design synthesis. It employs a novel optimisation method that maximises the aggregated preferences, integrating sound mathematical and extended U-modelling via open technical-, social-, and purpose cycles. The art of ODL is a constructivist design-based and well-proven learning concept fostering students’ design capabilities to become open and persistent problem solvers. It is a reflective, creative, and engaged learning approach that opens human development and unlocks new knowledge and solutions. The author also introduces new management features such as the corporate social identifier (CSI), the ‘socio-eco’ threefold organization model and U-model based open loop management. Finally, the author places Odesys & ODL within the integrative context of empiricism, rationalism, spiritualism, and constructivism to unite the open design impulse. This book will be of interest to both academics and practitioners working in the field of complex systems design and managerial decision-making, and functions as a textbook on systems design and management for master students from diverse backgrounds.

    Description: White working-class conservatives have played a decisive role in American history, particularly in their opposition to social justice movements, radical critiques of capitalism, and government help for the poor and sick. While this pattern is largely seen as a post-1960s development, Poor Man's Fortune tells a different story, excavating the long history of white working-class conservatism in the century from the Civil War to World War II. With a close study of metal miners in the Tri-State district of Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, Jarod Roll reveals why successive generations of white, native-born men willingly and repeatedly opposed labor unions and government-led health and safety reforms, even during the New Deal. With painstaking research, Roll shows how the miners' choices reflected a deep-seated, durable belief that hard-working American white men could prosper under capitalism, and exposes the grim costs of this view for these men and their communities, for organized labor, and for political movements seeking a more just and secure society. Roll's story shows how American inequalities are in part the result of a white working-class conservative tradition driven by grassroots assertions of racial, gendered, and national privilege.

    Description: So Far and Yet So Close provides a comparative study of frontier cattle ranching in two societies on opposite ends of the globe. It is also an environmental history that at the same time centres on both the natural and frontier environments. There are many points at which the western Canadian and northern Australian cattle frontiers evoke comparisons. Most obviously they came to life at about the same time: late 1870s-early 1880s. In both cases corporations were heavy investors and utilized an open range system in which tens of thousands of cattle roamed over thousands of square acres. Ranchers shared similar problems such as predators, disease, and weather, as well as markets. Ultimately, a nearly indistinguishable "country" culture developed in these geographically disparate and distant lands, which is still apparent today. Many similarities were in one way or another a reflection of frontier environmental conditions that is, conditions associated with the very "newness" of society. They included a lack of infrastructure (ie. fences), institutions (ie. police), and population (ie. consumers). However, the ranching people in these two societies had their differences too. In the end, the natural environment pushed agricultural development in these two regions along very different paths.

    Description: Archaeometry is based on the necessary interdisciplinary relationship between diverse branches of the natural and social sciences.     Description: Gordon W. Smith, PhD, dedicated much of his life to researching Canada's sovereignty in the Arctic. A historian by training, his 1952 dissertation from Columbia University on "The Historical and Legal Background of Canada's Arctic Claims" remains a foundational work on the topic, as does his 1966 chapter "Sovereignty in the North: The Canadian Aspect of an International Problem," in R. St. J. Macdonald's The Arctic Frontier. This work is the first in a project to edit and publish Smith's unpublished opus - a manuscript on "A Historical and Legal Study of Sovereignty in the Canadian North and Related Law of the Sea Problems." Written over three decades (yet incomplete at the time of his death in 2000), this work may well be the most comprehensive study on the nature and importance of the Canadian North in existence. Volume 1: Terrestrial Sovereignty provides the most comprehensive documentation yet available on the post-Confederation history of Canadian sovereignty in the north. As Arctic sovereignty and security issues return to the forefront of public debate, this invaluable resource provides the foundation upon which we may expand our understanding of Canada's claims from the original transfers of the northern territories in 1870 and 1880 through to the late twentieth century. The book provides a wealth of detail, ranging from administrative formation and delineation of the northern territories through to other activities including government expeditions to northern waters, foreign whaling, the Alaska boundary dispute, northern exploration between 1870 and 1918, the background of Canada's sector claim, the question concerning Danish sovereignty over Greenland and its relation to Canadian interests, the Ellesmere Island affair, the activities of American explorers in the Canadian North, and the Eastern Arctic Patrol. The final chapter examines the Eastern Greenland case and its implications for Canada.

    Description: The reception history of the term autofiction, coined by Serge Doubrovsky in 1977 and strongly polarising since then, shows that autofictional writing has been used by numerous authors in the past decades as a possibility to give explosive insights into their lives on the one hand, but to refer to an indeterminable ""fictional"" part of their work on the other. The underlying interferences between fictional and factual narrative strategies seem to predestine autofiction for the representation and provocation of scandal.     Description: This well-researched book is the first biography of one of Canada's most remarkable botanists. Alf Erling Porsild (1901-1977) grew up on the Arctic Station in West Greenland and later served as curator of botany at the National Museum of Canada. He collected thousands of specimens, greatly enlarging the National Herbarium and making it a superb research centre. For nearly twenty years, Porsild studied reindeer activities in Alaska and the Northwest Territories as part of the Reindeer Project designed to encourage grazing animal husbandry among aboriginal peoples. He published extensively, and his meticulous research and observations have particular relevance today with the growing concern over global warming in the Arctic.

    Description: Neighbours and Networks explores the economic relationship that existed between the Blood Indian reserve and the surrounding region of southern Alberta between 1884 and 1939. The Blood tribe, though living on a reserve, refused to become economically isolated from the larger community and indeed became significant contributors to the economy of the area. Their land base was important to the ranching industry. Their products, especially coal and hay, were sought after by settlers, and the Bloods were encouraged not only to provide them as needed, but also to become expert freighters, transporting goods from the reserve for non-Native business people. Blood field labour in the Raymond area's sugar beet fields was at times critical to the functioning of that industry. In addition, the Bloods' ties to the merchant community, especially in Cardston and Fort Macleod, resulted in a significant infusion of money into the local economy. Keith Regular's study fills the gap left by Canadian historiography that has largely ignored the economic associations between Natives and non-Natives living in a common environment. His microhistory refutes the perception that Native reserves have played only a minor role in regional development, and provides an excellent example of a cross-cultural, co-operative economic relationship in the post-treaty period on the Canadian plains.

    Description: Encyclopedia of Medieval Royal Iconography” sets out to be the first extensive collection of data on royal iconography from the Middles Ages (476–1492). In particular, it aims to collect entries about the most important rulers or dynasties that reigned during this period, from the Iberian Peninsula to Levant and from the Scandinavian Peninsula to the Mediterranean Sea. Specifically, “Encyclopedia of Medieval Royal Iconography” focuses on royal official images (namely, those representations that were commissioned at the behest of the ruler) and analyses them not only from an iconographic (namely, ‘static’) point of view but also as parts of a more general political communicative strategy (namely, in a ‘dynamic’ way) in order to better clarify their social functions and, consequently, their iconographic meanings.     Description: August Strindberg (1849–1912) kept a diary from February 1896 in Paris until the summer of 1908 in Stockholm. He referred to his diary from this period as his Occult Diary and used it to help him decipher the world as he experienced it. He read and reread his own notations, adding new interpretations, and deleting others. He also drew on the diary as material for creative expression, transforming isolated events and observations into groundbreaking works of literature. The Occult Diary is published here in its entirety in English translation for the first time, in a final revision by Ann-Charlotte Gavel Adams and with an introduction by Per Stam. The Occult Diary is a key resource for international Strindberg scholars and theater professionals and more broadly for scholars focusing on drama, theater history, stage performance, and literary currents at the turn of the previous century. The diary initiates the reader into the writer’s inner world during a crucial transitional period in his personal and literary life. It documents his readings and observations and gives important clues and information about an ongoing process of artistic reorientation. Strindberg was exploring new ways of looking at, interpreting, and writing about nature, science, art, the occult, and his fellow human beings.

    Description: Ten years have passed since the nuclear accident occurred in Fukushima, Japan, following the Great East Japan earthquake. Thereafter, many people around the world have been concerned about the risks posed by radiation. They still believe that even a small amount of radiation exposure will affect human health. In reality, however, there are many natural radionuclides in the environment, which emit a variety of types of radiation. Although it is well known that there is a positively linear relationship between acute radiation exposure and cancer risk in atomic bomb survivors, the risk of chronic radiation exposure due to natural radionuclides cannot be well explained to people who have lived in high-background radiation areas for many generations. Therefore, more studies in this research field are required to obtain new scientific findings. In order to promote further scientific activities, it will be the best for us to understand the current status of this field by summarizing what we have apprehended so far.     Description: Most Canadians know little, if anything at all, about the role of the Canadian Air Force in the 1999 Kosovo Air War. Yet lives were at put at stake as mission dedication and military skill were pushed to the limit. Some of Canada’s most prominent journalists attempted to report on the war, but came away virtually empty handed. Daily briefings given at the National Defence Headquarters provided so little information most Ottawa journalists simply stopped going. The decision of the military to choke Canada’s news media was deliberate and based on a tactical and strategic rationale. Scattering Chaff explores the role of the Canadian Air Force in the bombing campaigns of the Kosovo Air War while examining the military’s interference with the news media attempting to report to the Canadian public. It explores the ways in which the military has come to manage the media as an element of operational security, mission focus, and of popular opinion. Drawing on in-depth interviews with the war’s Canadian participants and a treasure-trove of unpublished documents and photographs, this book is an unprecedented investigation of a little-known conflict and the forces that prevented it from being better known.

This volume contains nine contributions which, each in their way, address different theoretical dislocations and practical shortcomings in the use of remote sensing products within archaeological practice. Le but en était également de confronter différentes méthodes d’investigation, et de faite le bilan d’études parallèles qui ne demandaient qu’à s’entrecroiser au profit de toutes C’est cette première journée programmatique que nous publions ici : elle contient les principaux questionnements qui touchent les chercheurs sur l’Europe dans les spécialités du droit, de la géographie et de l’histoire. Bien entendu, les pistes lancées ne peuvent qu’être enrichies par les futures rencontres, mais elles donnent d'ores et déjà une direction à une collaboration inédite, et des réponses, bien entendu à approfondir, aux premières questions que pose cette analyse pluridimensionnelle de l’Europe.

    Description: Du tournant du xxe siècle à 1932, lorsque, sous l'impulsion de James Maxton, le parti travailliste indépendant se désaf-filia d'un parti travailliste jugé trop timoré, le mouvement ouvrier écossais servit de laboratoire d'idées à la gauche britannique, auquel il fournit ses personnalités les plus marquantes, travaillistes (Keir Hardie puis Ramsay MacDonald), travaillistes indépendants de l'ILP (Maxton, John Wheatley), communistes orthodoxes (Tom Bell, Willie Gallacher) ou rebelles (John Maclean). Outre qu'elle présentait une structure de l'emploi qui faisait la part belle à l'aristocratie ouvrière des mines, des chantiers navals et de la construction mécanique, l'Ecosse bénéficiait d'un système d'enseignement plus démocratique que l'anglais, et les débats idéologiques s'y nourrissaient de l'apport d'une catégorie quasi inconnue en Angleterre : les intellectuels diplômés d'origine ouvrière. C'est à Glasgow que se déroulèrent les luttes les plus originales de la période (grève des loyers de 1915, largement conduite par des femmes, et, en 1919, grève pour la semaine de quarante heures), que furent fondées les premières écoles socialistes du dimanche et que les collèges ouvriers connurent leur plus solide implantation. La contre-culture prolétarienne qui se développa en Ecosse est au cœur de ce livre, qui se penche, en outre, sur le déclin démographique et économique du pays, sur les conditions de vie et de travail de la classe ouvrière, sur les débats - notamment la question nationale - et les luttes qu'elle mena.

Perón a la Argentina, el 20 de junio de 1973, el nivel de violencia política y represión fue progresivamente en aumento hasta alcanzar niveles inéditos en los meses cercanos al golpe de Estado de 1976. Esta investigación se aboca al estudio de ese proceso destinado a “depurar” la “infiltración” marxista en el interior del Movimiento Peronista. Para ello, realiza un acercamiento al problema desde un estudio de caso local. Se trata del abogado y militante peronista José Antonio Pastor Deleroni, que en la actualidad es considerado, oficialmente, la primera víctima de la Triple A en el ex partido de General Sarmiento (provincia de Buenos Aires). Tito Deleroni fue asesinado junto con su esposa, Nélida Arana, el 27 de noviembre de 1973. Este doble crimen fue señalado para dar cuenta del clima previo al golpe de Estado: la existencia a nivel local de una fuerte activación política y la acción represiva ejercida contra ella desde los sectores más reaccionarios del peronismo.

L'étudier permet donc de comprendre l'environnement dans lequel elle évolue, mais son étude n'est concevable qu'en relation avec son milieu ambiant. Une monographie offre le mérite de présenter l'ensemble des questions dans un microcosme dont l'analyse détaillée autorise une relative exhaustivité. Cette recherche sur la famille en Gévaudan au XVe siècle repose principalement sur l'exploitation de cent cinquante-neuf cotes notariales des archives de la Lozère, soit un ensemble de près de vingt-deux mille folios.     Description: Franc-maçonnerie et Révolution ont permis, depuis le classement des sources maçonniques déposées à la Bibliothèque Nationale par Alain Le Bihan il y a plus de trente ans, de mener de nombreuses études fondées sur une approche positiviste. Détruisant progressivement les thèses qui, derrière des oripeaux renouvelés, visaient à faire des loges et des maçons des acteurs portant culture et pratiques révolutionnaires, les recherches successives ont souvent montré que cette forme de sociabilité subissait plus les événements qu'elle ne les infléchissait. Il était cependant devenu nécessaire de dépasser ce constat pour tenter de saisir les temps et les formes de la transformation rencontrée par la franc-maçonnerie durant la période révolutionnaire. En plaçant 1789 au cœur de sa trame chronologique, c'est l'objectif que s'est fixé cette étude. Située dans le cadre d'une province vaste et peuplée où le "fait maçonnique" toucha près de 6000 francs-maçons rassemblés dans plus de cent loges et chapitres de hauts grades, la recherche, menée à partir de la constitution d'un vaste fichier informatisé, analyse la formation du réseau maçonnique puis met en lumière destins collectifs et individuels. La sociabilité maçonnique apparaît alors comme un large espace de socialisation qui, au xviiie siècle, reflète, dans ses structures sociologiques profondes, les tensions minant la société d'Ordres. Investie par le politique, se détachant progressivement du cordon du catholicisme, elle devient au fil du temps, notamment par le canal philanthropique qui fonde son identité originelle et permet l'affirmation progressive de son rayonnement vers le monde extérieur, un espace culturel profondément transformé. À partir de la réaction Ultra, les loges normandes peuvent ainsi résolument s'intégrer dans la nébuleuse des "cercles" et les hommes qui la fréquentent montrer, pour la plupart, une sensibilité caractérisée par l'adhésion au libéralisme politique. La franc-maçonnerie, parce qu'elle fut radicalement transformée par l'événement révolutionnaire, est alors prête à participer aux grandes batailles politiques et culturelles qui jalonneront son histoire à partir de 1848.

Par routine ou par paresse, on pense en premier lieu à l’irruption de Martin Luther et des autres protagonistes de la Réforme protestante et à la scission de la chrétienté latine. Mais toute l’Europe n’est pas chrétienne : les temps modernes s’ouvrent avec l’expulsion, les conversions forcées et la persécution des juifs et des musulmans dans la péninsule Ibérique de la Reconquista. Et il y a une Europe ottomane, elle aussi pluri-religieuse. L’expérience européenne des conflits religieux se fait en outre dans un horizon global de la rencontre avec d’autres religions et civilisations où les Européens découvrent leur propre barbarie. Celle-ci s’exprime dans les atrocités des guerres civiles, des guerres de religion en France à l’action des troupes de Cromwell en Irlande. Partant de la pluralité religieuse de l’espace européen, les affrontements de la première modernité se lisent comme un douloureux processus d’apprentissage d’accepter et de gérer cette pluralité irréductible. Ainsi naît une notion et forme historique, politique et culturelle de l’Europe qui intègre dans sa constitution la conflictualité religieuse. Les contributions ici réunies analysent ce processus couvrant tout l’espace européen. Cet ouvrage est né de la collaboration d’un groupe d’historien(ne)s européen(ne)s spécialistes de ces questions et montre la richesse du paysage historiographique européen.

    Description: Ce recueil, réunissant des chercheurs beiges et congolais, témoigne du regain d'intérêt que suscite l'histoire du Congo en Belgique depuis quelques années. Par l'analyse croisée et contradictoire si nécessaire pour rendre compte de la réalité historique des événements survenus entre 1955 et 1960, il souligne les cinquante ans de la publication du manifeste Conscience africaine le 30 juin 1956 ou le 1er juillet 1956. En concentrant l'attention sur l'événement retenu dans la chronologie de la prise de conscience politique des Congolais, on réduit la complexité des courants ayant porté ce texte, comme le montrent à l'envi les contributions réunies ici. Cependant, la commémoration s'accommode difficilement des explications plus conjoncturelles et structurelles qui permettent d'interpréter l'événement dans sa cohérence, avec les contradictions inhérentes au jeu d'échelle géographique et temporel. Que s'est-il donc réellement passe le 30 juin 1956 ? Date symbolique de l'histoire récente du Congo, l'événement a été vécu et interprété de manière très différente. Une réappropriation univoque dans le cadre de la commémoration des cinquante ans ne témoigne pas de cette diversité. II convient dès lors de contextualiser ce « réveil », cette « première manifestation publique » d'une conscience d'appartenir à un groupe social distinct par l'analyse du contexte immédiat et de l'héritage, réel ou suppose, attribué à Conscience africaine.

Nichtsdestotrotz ist eine Verfeinerung des Sehens zu konstatieren, wie zunehmende Differenzierungskompetenz, die nicht nur neue graphische Techniken hervorbrachte, die im 19. Jahrhundert zur Fotographie führen sollten, sondern auch die Ästhetisierung verstärkte. En lutte contre l’Espagne, le royaume de France envahit la Franche-Comté (ou comté de Bourgogne) en 1636 et tente, sinon de la conquérir, au moins d’empêcher qu’elle serve de place d’armes aux Habsbourg. La guerre de Dix Ans est donc une succession de campagnes et d’opérations militaires à l’image du célèbre siège de Dole, mais aussi une décennie de misères, de souffrances, de destructions. Cet ouvrage est le résumé d’une thèse de doctorat soutenue en 1995 à l’université de Franche-Comté, fruit de dix années de recherches effectuées tant dans les dépôts d’archives de la région que sur le terrain. L’auteur replace la guerre de Dix Ans dans son contexte européen, fait le point des connaissances sur le sujet et traite des questions sociales et économiques. Il apporte en somme un éclairage nouveau sur cette tragique période de l’histoire comtoise et remet en cause bon nombre d’idées reçues.

    Description: Le Cabinet des médailles de la Bibliothèque nationale de France compte parmi ses trésors la plus importante collection de pierres gravées au monde (près de dix mille). Nombre d’entre elles, d’une qualité exceptionnelle, gravées pour des princes durant l’Antiquité, nous ont été transmises par les rois de France qui les firent orner de montures d’or décorées de pierres précieuses et d’émaux. C’est la plus éminente spécialiste de la glyptique antique, Marie-Louise Vollenweider, qui inaugure l’étude des pierres grecques et romaines avec le catalogue raisonné des portraits antiques, résultat de trente années de travail. Pour ce premier tome, consacré à la naissance du portrait et à son développement à l’époque hellénistique - qui sera suivi d’un second sur les portraits romains -, 283 camées et intailles ont été sélectionnés. D’une conception résolument nouvelle, ce catalogue ne se contente pas d’établir un classement des oeuvres, selon le style d’une époque et la manière d’un graveur, mais cherche à comprendre l’esprit du temps, le talent des graveurs et la psychologie des personnages représentés. Ceux-ci, restés jusqu’ici anonymes, ont retrouvé leur identité de princes et de princesses hellénistiques – ptolémaïques, séleucides, pontiques, cappadociens –, d’artisans ou de philosophes, mais aussi une vie nouvelle. Car pour Marie-Louise Vollenweider, le visage parle et elle en comprend parfaitement le langage. Notons aussi certaines attributions inédites à des artistes, dont la plus novatrice est celle d’un camée d’Alexandre le Grand au plus célèbre graveur de l’Antiquité, Pyrgotélès, connu par le témoignage de Pline l’Ancien, mais dont aucune œuvre n’avait été jusqu’à présent identifiée. Ce serait là le seul portrait du grand souverain réalisé de son vivant.

Durant cette période charnière, un lent mouvement de fond a conduit au gouvernement par conseil des grands et au développement des liens de fidélité, à la conjugalisation du modèle familial et au renforcement des liens verticaux et hiérarchiques à l’intérieur des groupements de parenté aristocratiques. La famille carolingienne et les familles royales qui lui ont succédé sont issues de l’aristocratie franque qui apparaît au fil de l’étude comme l’observatoire privilégié de toutes les transformations sociales. Famille large-famille étroite, parenté cognatique-parenté agnatique ? L’auteur dépasse ces débats traditionnels en mettant en relation les fondements sociaux et culturels du pouvoir avec les mécanismes de la filiation, de l’alliance et de la résidence. Fondamentalement cognatique mais de plus en plus fermement centré sur le couple conjugal, le système de parenté a évolué au rythme des transformations sociales et politiques, tout en participant lui-même à la dynamique du changement social. Le présent ouvrage met en lumière mutations et permanences. La montée des Carolingiens et le système politique qu’ils mettent en place aux VIIIe et XIe siècles tirent parti de la hiérarchisation de l’aristocratie et l’accélèrent. Sous le contrôle du roi et de l’Église, l’équilibre social et politique repose désormais sur des groupements que structurent l’alliance, l’amitié et la fidélité. La rupture de l’ordre carolingien et la promotion de la militia à la fin du IXe siècle, l’apparition de lignages organisés autour d’un honor transmis en ligne directe, la nouvelle définition du rôle de la femme et de la parenté agnatique au Xe siècle n’y changent rien : l’alliance et la fidélité restent les fondements des équilibres locaux.

    Description: Les monarchies hellénistiques, en raison de leur puissance financière et militaire, furent les protagonistes majeurs de la diplomatie et des conflits armés en Orient depuis la fin du IVe siècle av. J.-C. jusqu'à l'arrivée de Rome sur la scène régionale aux IIe/Ier siècles av. J.-C. En furent-elles les seuls acteurs ? L'idée a longtemps prévalu, dans l'historiographie contemporaine, d'un abaissement politique irrémédiable des cités grecques à cette époque, face à l'émergence des nouvelles puissances royales, seules désormais capables de déclencher les conflits, d'en supporter les coûts et d'en recueillir les fruits. A contrario, les cités, vidées de leur substance, incapables de décider de leur propre destin, auraient confié ce soin à des monarques désireux de faire d'elles les pions de leur diplomatie. La journée d'études organisée à Lyon le 10 octobre 2003 à la Maison de l'Orient méditerranéen s'est proposé d'attirer l'attention sur un certain nombre d'aspects qui touchent au rapport entre les cités et le phénomène général de la guerre. Pour cette étude, le cadre choisi a été celui de l'Asie mineure, parce qu'il offrait une cohérence géographique suffisamment forte et des exemples qui illustraient abondamment la perspective que nous voulions explorer. Les sept contributions, qui constituent ce volume, en analysant sous différents aspects la capacité des communautés civiques à penser les problèmes de la guerre et à se donner une organisation interne, qui leur permettrait de gérer les nombreuses épreuves de la période, suggèrent la permanence très vivante, en leur sein, d'une culture militaire, qu'elle fût la manifestation d'un conservatisme culturel ou celle d'une volonté farouche de défendre les intérêts communautaires.

    Description: Si « l’hérédité en République » peut sembler un paradoxe, pratiques népotiques, cousinages complexes, ancrage local, réseaux de sociabilité au sein de la bourgeoisie conduisent à la confiscation du destin politique de la Marne par quelques familles entre 1871 et 1940. Malgré le vœu de Gambetta de voir émerger des couches sociales nouvelles en politique, des groupes familiaux alliés mettent la main sur les mandats de conseiller d’arrondissement, conseiller général, député et sénateur. Ces élus limitent le renouvellement des élites politiques nationales et locales. Appartenant à des familles qui s’embourgeoisent progressivement au cours du siècle, ces notables procèdent de stratégies matrimoniales définies. À leur tour, ils les reproduisent pour conforter leur assise sociale, locale, familiale et… politique. Ces éléments créent et confortent le crédit politique et la visibilité du candidat. Fondé sur une démarche prosopographique, cet ouvrage analyse l’hérédité et l’héritage en politique pour des mandats nationaux et locaux et met en lumière l’impact de la famille élargie (Sippe) sur le régime républicain, en dépit du suffrage universel.

Vivre au château participe des modes d'être et de paraître dans le cadre d'espaces aménagés selon des critères variés : fonctionnalité, confort, mais aussi cérémonial, dans le cadre de bâtiments et de pièces d'époques et de natures souvent diverses. Tours maîtresses ou corps de logis des châteaux, manoirs ou simples maisons des champs, ces demeures aristocratiques rurales bénéficient, dans les dernières décennies du Moyen Âge, d'une adaptation aux fonctions qui sont les leurs. Le château est enfin le lieu d'un riche décor, qui concerne aussi bien les murs (faux appareils, plafonds décorés, peintures historiées, tentures et tapisseries, lambris) que les sols (pavements) et qui participe de la distinction des espaces, de la hiérarchie des accès comme du statut du propriétaire. Au travers d'un voyage au château de Suscinio, dans le Morbihan, ce livre offre un riche panorama des modes de vie aristocratiques en Bretagne et ailleurs, à l'époque de l'émergence des conceptions nouvelles de la Renaissance.

    Description: Il y a deux cents ans, le décret impérial du 17 mars 1808, en 144 articles, organisait l’Université impériale fondée en 1806. Restaurant les facultés, précisant les grades mais aussi la hiérarchie interne du personnel administratif et enseignant, cet imposant décret jetait les bases de notre système contemporain d’Instruction publique. C’est aussi par ce décret qu’apparaît le recteur d’académie, défini comme le représentant direct du Grand-Maître parisien, chef d’un espace territorial nouveau, l’académie, composée d’un regroupement de plusieurs départements pour la gestion des affaires éducatives. Parfois menacée de suppression, souvent modifiée dans ses attributions règlementaires, la fonction rectorale a surmonté les multiples changements de régime qu’a connus la France depuis 1808, s’affirmant comme une spécificité française. Cet ouvrage revient sur les deux cents ans d’engagements polymorphes des recteurs d’académie au service du développement de l’Instruction publique. Il associe de larges synthèses sur la naissance de la fonction et les principales phases de son évolution, les analyses plus spécifiques sur certains de leurs engagements, tout en proposant des études de cas académiques ou biographiques. Ces contributions permettent ainsi de mieux connaître les recteurs et leur fonction mais aussi de réaliser, par leur intermédiaire, une véritable plongée dans l’histoire de nos structures éducatives contemporaines.

Bien qu’elle n’ait pas souffert de faim de terres, la France a également participé à cette modernisation agricole modifiant les rapports entre l’homme et la nature. Par le prisme de l’histoire de neuf marais asséchés en France au cours du XVIIe, cet ouvrage, fondé sur l’exploitation d’archives nombreuses, françaises et néerlandaises, met en lumière le rôle de la monarchie et de son aristocratie ministérielle dans la conduite de ce processus. Grâce à des dispositifs juridiques et des méthodes de gestion novateurs, mais aussi par un soutien politique constant, la monarchie a permis la mise en culture d’espaces traditionnellement consacrés à la pêche, à la chasse ou à la cueillette. Richelieu et ses créatures, puis Mazarin et ses associés ont ainsi procédé à l’importation d’un modèle hydraulique et agricole d’inspiration néerlandaise, ancré dans l’économie européenne et aux conséquences sociales et environnementales encore marquantes de nos jours. Les bonifications françaises du XVIIe siècle montrent l’importance des liens entre les élites politiques françaises et les élites commerçantes néerlandaises. Ainsi, l’histoire des assèchements offre un regard original sur l’histoire politique du XVIIe siècle français, révélant les enjeux territoriaux de la centralisation monarchique et du développement de l’État.

Que veut dire la floraison des références au Moyen Âge, depuis les milliers de fêtes médiévales qui parcourent l’Europe jusqu’aux utilisations politiques de tout genre, en passant par l’invention de cultures néo-médiévales qui envahissent aujourd’hui bibliothèques, cinémas et ordinateurs ? Quel rapport ce médiévalisme entretient-il avec l’histoire scientifique médiévale ? Quels sont les liens entre cette invocation permanente, qui tient tantôt du mythe, tantôt de la boîte à outils conceptuelle, et les redéfinitions en cours de la société européenne et occidentale ? C’est cet ensemble de questions, et bien d’autres qu’interroge cet essai qui plonge dans l’histoire du xixe et du xxe siècle pour éclairer le présent et le futur du médiévalisme.

Objet de l'économie de marché, le colis s'adapte aux attentes des donateurs, aux conditions logistiques et aux besoins des destinataires. Bref, le colis facilite la cristallisation d'une communauté de donateurs et d'un espace d'intervention humanitaire construit par l'engagement des organisations non gouvernementales, des organisations internationales et des États en guerre.

    Description: Au xvie siècle, les Bilbanais contrôlent une économie puissante dont les différents secteurs sont interactifs (construction navale, industrie du fer, commerce, pêche, transport). Cette économie commerciale est également guerrière, car les Biscayens fournissent au roi des navires et des armes pour le besoin des conflits. Ces secteurs d’activités à double utilité, intimement liés entre eux, constituent un des atouts majeurs du port de Bilbao. D’ailleurs, tandis que la bibliographie tendait à faire de Séville le centre économique de la vie espagnole et européenne dans la première moitié du xvie siècle, il s’avère que les échanges de Bilbao avec le reste de l’Europe équivalent à ceux de la métropole andalouse avec l’Amérique jusqu’aux années 1560-1570. L’influence de la découverte du Nouveau Continent sur la structure du commerce espagnol et européen s’avère donc progressive et assez tardive, ce qui nous amène à reconsidérer les modèles établis par Pierre Chaunu et Immanuel Wallerstein. L’importance du réseau de commerce et de pouvoir que contrôlent les Bilbanais au xvie siècle explique en partie les performances du port de Bilbao. Aux côtés des gens d’affaires de Burgos avec lesquels ils coopèrent, ils constituent l’un des ferments de maturité du milieu marchand européen. Même si ces deux groupes marchands sont liés, le succès des entrepreneurs bilbanais survit à la baisse de régime de l’économie castillane. Dans les dernières décennies du xvie siècle, en raison des guerres dans le nord-ouest européen qui entravent notablement le commerce, ils reconvertissent leurs investissements dans l’achat de marchandises locales et castillanes, dans le commerce avec la Péninsule Ibérique et le Nouveau Monde, et dans de nombreux placements financiers. Mais il y a plus, car à cette époque plus d’un navire de guerre sur deux est construit en Pays Basque. Grâce aux commandes royales, les chantiers navals biscayens et les fabriques d’armes tournent à plein régime, au moins jusqu’au début du xviie siècle, compensant en partie les manques à gagner dans le domaine commercial. Cette faculté particulière de reconversion des activités renvoie aux réseaux sociaux de nos marchands et à leur activité de financiers. A cet égard, les Bilbanais organisent des stratégies de manipulation vis-à-vis de leurs homologues castillans, de la haute noblesse et du monarque, et constituent un groupe de pression avec lequel l’État castillan doit transiger.

    Description: En las sociedades de la modernidad, las “fronteras” se convierten en marcas o limes que determinan ámbitos o zonas de contacto que, de alguna manera, han servido para crear y recrear marcos generales de diferenciación y de posibles comparaciones a partir de sus componentes sociales, económicos, culturales, políticos, religiosos, etc., distinguiendo así, ambos márgenes. Hablamos por ello de “fronteras” en plural, distintas y cambiantes, pero con un punto común, esto es la idea de un límite o linde que puede ser extenso, dilatado, poroso o difuminado. Al mismo tiempo, en muchos casos estas “fronteras” no se muestran en sí como separadoras. Por el contrario, constituyen la basa que ha permitido la aparición de determinados procesos de permeabilidad y percolación que provocan un importante efecto de convergencia siendo así también zonas o espacios de encuentro, contacto e intercambio. En este sentido, el reto de la presente compilación de trabajos es el de pensar las fronteras dentro de unas monarquías hispano lusitanas agregativas. Las innumerables formas de abordaje, aspectos y dinámicas que confluyen en pensar las “fronteras” en el Mundo Atlántico fundan un aliciente más para este encuentro de miradas que resume, en gran medida, el espíritu propio del proyecto de la Red inter-universitaria de Historia del Mundo Ibérico del Antiguo Régimen a las Independencias.

    Description: Dans les sociétés d’Ancien Régime, la pierre et la terre furent longtemps la principale source de richesses et un élément constitutif des patrimoines. Dès lors, les propriétés immobilières et foncières deviennent un puissant vecteur de rencontres et d’échanges entre les différentes catégories sociales, citadines et rurales. Dans les villes où la majorité de la population vit en location, la maison n’a pas attiré de grands rassembleurs de pierre. Sur le marché immobilier, les bourgeois et les artisans sont les plus actifs, mais toutes les catégories sociales sont en concurrence pour des habitations de valeur médiocre ou faible. En considérant la ville dans son environnement rural, l’influence citadine est claire. Autour de Lille ou de Cambrai, les propriétés citadines modèlent le visage des campagnes. Pourtant, les citadins, principalement issus de la bourgeoisie, s’engagent timidement dans le jeu foncier. Encore la participation citadine est-elle scandée par des convulsions chronologiques qui achèvent de relativiser l’idée de la « conquête bourgeoise du sol ». Sur le marché foncier, les gens de campagne réalisent donc l’essentiel de l’activité. Opérant entre eux, les ruraux multiplient les interventions de petite valeur sur un espace relationnel étroit. Pourtant, tous ne sont pas en action : l’instabilité des patrimoines des journaliers renforce surtout la position des laboureurs et des fermiers. À travers l’analyse des marchés fonciers et immobiliers, cet ouvrage s’attache donc à comprendre les stratégies et les dynamiques des différentes catégories sociales de la Ville et de la Campagne.
