    Description: Greece belongs to the most geodynamically active regions of the world and as such, it has to be considered an area of intense geogenic degassing. In terms of carbon, the territory is characterized by the high hydrothermal and volcanic activity of the South Aegean Active Volcanic Arc (SAAVA), and by widespread geological seeps of buried carbon dioxide and methane. In the present work, we investigate the island of Gyali located in the volcanic system Kos-Gyali-Nisyros. Nine gas samples have been collected on the island of Gyali in areas found both on land, in a small lake (~2000 m2) along its beach, and in the sea close to the shore at shallow depths (〈20 m). Results show that CO2 is the prevailing gas species with concentrations above 833,000 μmol/mol, whilst minor enrichments in N2 are noticed in some of the samples. Helium isotope ratio suggests an up to 70% mantle origin (considering a MOR type source) with the contribution of the atmospheric component being negligible, whereas C presents a mixed mantle-limestone origin with organic sediment being unimportant. Such isotope values fall in the range that characterizes the Kos-Gyali-Nisyros Volcanic Field. First estimations on the CO2 release suggest an output in the range from 18 to 28 t/d for Gyali Island, which is much lower than the total output of Kos ~75 t/d and Nisyros ~100 t/d. However, such results highlight that Gyali is an active system and, despite its small size, its degassing is not trivial.

Il presente Rapporto sul Monitoraggio dei Vulcani Campani rappresenta l’attività svolta dall’Osservatorio Vesuviano e dalle altre Sezioni INGV impegnate nel monitoraggio dell’area vulcanica campana nel 2022.

    Description: This book contributes to the current discussion on geoethics and global ethics within the geoscience and humanities communities. It provides new content and insights into developing convergent human actions in response to global anthropogenic changes, based on perspectives that make it possible to combine geoscience knowledge with humanities and social sciences approaches. Selected authors present their reflections, findings and insights regarding the vision of geoethics (ethics of responsibility towards the Earth) as global ethics from philosophical, humanities and social sciences perspectives. In addition, they discuss ethical frameworks from diverse cultural traditions, searching for points of intersection with geoethics. The goal: for global environmental problems to be managed via multi-perspective approaches that can more effectively accommodate complexity. Combining the strengths of the geosciences, humanities and social sciences can pave the way for a paradigm shift in how human societies develop adaptive, sustainable responses to environmental changes and societal inequalities.

    Description: The globalized society is held together by an intricate system of human relationships. This system constitutes a planetary architecture characterized by (a) a complex technological structure, (b) the homogenization of cultural forms and economic systems, (c) growing social, political and economic inequalities. Faced with planetary systemic perturbations (such as pandemics and wars), the globalized society shows criticalities, but also strengths, despite it is still too vulnerable to anthropogenic environmental changes. These changes modify the physical–chemical-biological characteristics of the Earth system and therefore represent a great threat to human communities, more serious than the pandemic threat from SARS-CoV-2, perhaps equal to the threat of a nuclear war, since it is the habitability of the planet by humanity and many other living species to be in danger. In order to promptly address the dangers of the anthropogenic changes underway, a closer and more structured international cooperation between states is needed. There are no alternatives. But this goal today appears increasingly difficult and distant due to the international geopolitical instability triggered by the war in Ukraine. In fact, only, human communities that share ethical principles and values on which to base new forms of relationship between human beings and the Earth system are able to face the planetary ecological crisis and build a possible future on Earth. In this perspective, geoethics is proposed as global ethics of a complex world, founded on the principles of dignity, freedom and responsibility and aimed at the renewal of the human-Earth System nexus and the realization of an ecological humanism.

    Description: In academic institutions, there is frequently the need to provide new services, in a cloud model, to be used either in teaching or research activities. One of the main decisions to be addressed is related to the cloud model to adopt (private, public or hybrid), and what the mixing of functionalities to use for the hybrid one. In this paper two different methodologies (Cost/features and Semantic-based) are been experimented in order to identify the best suited cloud model to adopt for a specific problem. The long-term perspective is to build a methodology to serve as a tool to be used as decision support for the ICT manager in order to help him in this decision. The comparison between the two different methodologies show the strengths and weaknesses of both approaches.

    Description: Volatiles transported from the Earth’s interior to the surface through permeable faults provide insights on the gas composition of deep reservoirs, mixing and migration processes, and can also be applied as gas-geothermometer. Here, we present carbon (δ13C), hydrogen (δ2H) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopic data of CO2, CH4, and N2 from gas samples collected from the Kızıldere and Tekke Hamam geothermal fields, located along the eastern segment of the Büyük Menderes Graben, Turkey. The stable isotopic composition of carbon (δ13C) ranges from +0.30 to +0.99‰ (PDB) for CO2 from Kızıldere and is slightly more variable (−0.95 to +1.3‰) in samples from Tekke Hamam. Carbon isotope data in combination with CO2/3He data reveal that ~97% (Tekke Hamam) to ~99% (Kızıldere) of CO2 derives from limestone sources, with the residual CO2 being magmatic in origin with no evidence for CO2 from organic sources. The slightly higher contribution of limestone- derived CO2 in Kızıldere, compared to Tekke Hamam can be attributed to the higher temperatures of the Kızıldere reservoir and resulting amplified fluid–limestone interaction, as well as helium depletion during phase separation for Kızıldere samples. In contrast to the carbon isotopic composition of CO2, the δ13C values of methane from Kızıldere and Tekke Hamam are clearly distinct and vary between −23.6 and −20.8‰ for Kızıldere and −34.4 and −31.7‰ for Tekke Hamam, respectively. The δ2H-CH4 composition is also distinct, measured as −126.7‰ for Kızıldere and −143.3‰ for Tekke Hamam. CO2-CH4 carbon isotope geothermometry calculations based on the isotopic fractionation of δ13C between the dominant component CO2 and the minor component CH4 reveals temperatures 20–40 °C and 100–160 °C higher than the bottom–hole temperatures measured for Tekke Hamam and Kızıldere, respectively. Based on the CO2-CH4 carbon isotope disequilibrium, unusual high methane concentrations of ~0.3 to 0.4 vol.-% and CH4/3He-δ13C-CH4 relationships we suggest thermal decomposition of late (Tekke Hamam) to over-mature (Kızıldere) organic matter and, to some extent, also abiogenic processes as principal source of methane. The N2/36Ar ratios of most samples reveal the existence of a non–atmospheric nitrogen component within the gas mixture issuing from both fields, in addition to a constant contribution of atmospheric derived nitrogen accompanied into the system via the meteoric recharge of the geothermal system. Based on the δ15N isotopic ratios (varying between −4.44‰ and 4.54‰), the non–atmospheric component seems to be a mixture of both sedimentary (crustal organic) and mantle nitrogen. The thick Pliocene sedimentary sequence covering the metamorphic basement is the likely major source for the thermogenic content of CH4 and crustal N2 gas content in the samples.

    Description: Communication is not only through words. Man has used any medium to memorize places and describe the area around him through cartography for over 4000 years. By means of new technologies we have passed from computer-drawn maps to georeferenced digital maps, up to georeferenced data shared via webgis. The Osservatorio Vesuviano is the Sezione di Napoli of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, a research institution whose main purpose is the monitoring of Campania volcanic areas by means of different types of networks (consisting of fixed and mobile stations), each of which records different parameters. The Osservatorio Vesuviano has built a constantly evolving GIS environment database to manage geographic data in order to remember and understand the distribution of these networks. This paper presents the open access database “moNitoring mAps of camPania voLcanoES” (NAPLES), which provides monitoring networks maps. You can access NAPLES database and download the maps you need both from Osservatorio Vesuviano website or from Zenodo open database.

    Description: After the pandemic period due to the spread of COVID-19, staff of the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) with diversified skills and coming from different geographical areas has planned and organized the participation of the Institute in the XXXVI edition of the Futuro Remoto popular scientific event occurred in Naples from 22 to 27 November 2022, finally back in presence. Starting from the theme indicated by the organizers - called “Equilibrium” - the working group has developed a proposal entitled “Earth: in constant search for equilibrium”. The proposal has been articulated so as to start from the observation of the internal disequilibria that make the Earth a planet in continuous movement, up to the manifestations of the earth’s dynamics producing a significant impact on human life, such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and climate changes. These themes have been illustrated with models, demonstrations with scientific instruments, interactive exhibits and videos. Thanks to the activities carried out, the visitors have been able to exchange their points of view with the INGV staff, developing reflections on the proposed topics. Very important for the successful interaction between the INGV personnel involved and the public was the climate of collaboration and harmony created thanks to proactive attitudes, professionalism and skills of the staff who have planned, organized and participated in the event.
