    Beschreibung: This timely volume responds to the epic impacts of cancer as a global phenomenon. Through the fine-grained lens of ethnography, the contributors present new thinking on how social, economic, race, gender and other structural inequalities intersect, compound and complicate health inequalities. Cancer experiences and impacts are explored across eleven countries: Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, France, Greece, India, Indonesia, Italy, Senegal, the United Kingdom and the United States. The volume engages with specific cancers from the point of primary prevention, to screening, diagnosis, treatment (or its absence), and end-of-life care. Cancer and the Politics of Care traverses new theoretical terrain through explicitly critiquing cancer interventions, their limitations and success, the politics that drive them, and their embeddedness in local cultures and value systems. It extends prior work on cancer, by incorporating the perspectives of patients and their families, ‘at risk’ groups and communities, health professionals, cancer advocates and educators, and patient navigators. The volume advances cross-cultural understandings of care, resisting simple dichotomies between caregiving and receiving, and reveals the fraught ethics of care that must be negotiated in resource-poor settings and stratified health systems. Its diversity and innovation ensures its wide utility among those working in and studying medical anthropology, social anthropology and other fields at the intersections of social science, medicine and health equity.

Ce livre propose un regard ethnographique pour comprendre les réalités du Maroc contemporain. Il parte du mal-être de la jeunesse. Il plonge dans l’histoire d’une famille sur plusieurs générations. Il explore les représentations liées aux relations entre les sexes, mais aussi entre les générations. Il souligne l’ampleur des tensions qui travaillent les individus et les familles. Cet ouvrage revient sur les bouleversements de la société marocaine, soulignant à la fois combien les changements dus aux processus de modernisation sont rapides, profonds et irréversibles, et combien sont fortes les résistances. Les valeurs musulmanes apparaissent comme un rempart à ce qui est vécu comme une occidentalisation des mœurs, et la famille comme la garante de leur préservation. Il en résulte cette crispation autour du statut de la femme et des normes religieuses, du corps et de la sexualité, avec laquelle se débattent les jeunes. Comment être moderne sans se dissoudre dans le modèle occidental ?

    Beschreibung: Small is beautiful ! Le petit est à la mode dans le monde vitivinicole : petites exploitations, petites appellations, cépages modestes, circuits courts. Le petit accompagne les préoccupations actuelles autour de la recherche du bien‑être et du respect de l'équilibre environnemental. Cette quête de l'authentique et du sain, que partagent de plus en plus consommateurs et producteurs, fait émerger des niches favorables aux « petits vins » et aux « petits vignobles ». Les critères traditionnels de hiérarchie des crus et des vignobles s'en trouvent reconsidérés, de même que la définition classique de la qualité des vins. Pourquoi les « grands » vins seraient-ils forcément bons quand des « petits » vins ne seraient au mieux que des curiosités intéressantes Par l'intermédiaire des sciences sociales, ce livre vise à réévaluer la perception, la place et les mutations des petits vignobles. Ainsi, il interroge en premier lieu le sens de « petit » dans le monde vitivinicole français, au travers de l'examen des vignobles de Madiran, de Buzet, de Bordeaux, du Rouergue, de Cahors, de Bourgogne et de Touraine. En analysant les spécificités de ces territoires de l'époque médiévale à nos jours, les auteurs mettent en lumière l'organisation du marché, les logiques spatiales et la diversité des pratiques viticoles en France. Dès lors, en décentrant le regard, les petits vignobles assurent une relecture de la viticulture nationale.

    Beschreibung: How was the Roman Empire invoked in Brexit Britain and in Donald Trump’s United States of America, and to what purpose? And why is it critical to answer these kinds of questions? Heritage and Nationalism explores how people’s perceptions and experiences of the ancient past shape political identities in the digital age. It particularly examines the multiple ways in which politicians, parties and private citizens mobilise aspects of the Iron Age, Roman and Medieval past of Britain and Europe to include or exclude ‘others’ based on culture, religion, class, race, ethnicity, etc. Chiara Bonacchi draws on the results of an extensive programme of research involving both data-intensive and qualitative methods to investigate how pre-modern periods are leveraged to support or oppose populist nationalist arguments as part of social media discussions concerning Brexit, the Italian Election of 2018 and the US-Mexican border debate in the US. Analysing 60 million tweets and Facebook posts, comments and replies, this book is the first to use big data to answer questions about public engagement with the past and identity politics. The findings and insightful conclusions revise and reframe the meaning of populist nationalism today and help to build a shared basis for the democratic engagement of citizens in public life in the future. The book offers a fascinating and unmissable read for anyone interested in how the past and its contemporary legacy, or ‘heritage’, influence our ‘political’ thinking and feeling in a time of hyper-interconnectivity.

    Beschreibung: Beni-Amer cattle owners in the western part of the Horn of Africa are not only masters in cattle breeding, they are also knowledge sovereign, in terms of owning productive genes of cattle and the cognitive knowledge base crucial to sustainable development. The strong bonds between the Beni-Amer, their animals, and their environment constitute the basis of their ways of knowing, and much of their knowledge system is built on experience and embedded in their cultural practices. In this book, the first to study Beni-Amer practices, Zeremariam Fre argues for the importance of their knowledge, challenging the preconceptions that regard it as untrustworthy when compared to scientific knowledge from more developed regions. Empirical evidence suggests that there is much one could learn from the other, since elements of pastoralist technology, such as those related to animal production and husbandry, make a direct contribution to our knowledge of livestock production. It is this potential for hybridisation, as well as the resilience of the herders, at the core of the indigenous knowledge system.

    Beschreibung: Lorsqu'au xvie siècle les mangeurs d'hommes - les anthropophages - reçoivent le nom de cannibales, c'est aussi une tradition millénaire qui adopte des formes nouvelles. Avant Colomb, il y a en effet une histoire occidentale de l'homme comme nourriture, mais celle-ci reste en grande partie à écrire. Le présent ouvrage contribue à combler cette lacune. Dans les récits et les images de l'ethnographie ancienne, l'anthropophage, qu'il mange ses ennemis ou ses défunts bien-aimés, est un être lointain, dont les coutumes bousculent les normes culturelles occidentales. Menace distante, alors, le cannibale ? Bien au contraire : on dit de groupes et d'individus marginaux qu'ils convoitent la chair d'enfants innocents pour leurs mystérieux rituels. On parle aussi d'affamés qui n'hésitent pas à dévorer leurs proches, de femmes désespérées qui mangent leurs enfants. Pendant ce temps, pourtant, du sang humain soigne, stimule, rassasie ou sanctifie, tandis que de pieux chrétiens consomment la chair du Christ sous les apparences de l'hostie. À l'aide des méthodes de l'histoire et des disciplines sœurs, l'auteur reconstitue un portrait tout en contrastes du tabou alimentaire par excellence. Entre imaginaires plus ou moins informés et réalités plus ou moins déformées, un parcours varié et étonnant se dessine.

    Beschreibung: La situation des juifs, partagés entre différentes identités nationales en formation en Europe centrale de la fin du xviiie siècle à la seconde guerre mondiale, est révélatrice des enjeux identitaires et politiques auxquels doivent faire face les minorités. La question de l’appartenance nationale se pose pour eux avec une acuité particulière, et ils apparaissent dès lors comme des individus au parcours à la fois singulier et paradigmatique. Les auteurs mettent en évidence à travers des chapitres consacrés à des personnalités emblématiques les mécanismes de la construction d’une identité personnelle dans un environnement complexe, qu’elle s’effectue dans la sphère privée ou publique, en passant par l’adhésion volontaire à une communauté, qu’elle soit culturelle ou politique. Les étapes de la construction d’identités apparaissent à travers des biographies qui s’inscrivent dans un vaste espace, depuis l’Europe centrale (Vienne, Prague, Budapest, Zagreb et Varsovie) jusqu’à Jérusalem et la Chine.     Beschreibung: Critical Perspectives on Cultural Memory and Heritage focuses on the importance of memory and heritage for individual and group identity, and for their sense of belonging. It aims to expose the motives and discourses related to the destruction of memory and heritage during times of war, terror, sectarian conflict and through capitalist policies. It is within these affected spheres of cultural heritage where groups and communities ascribe values, develop memories, and shape their collective identity.
