Description: Two loess sections from the Upper Palaeolithic site of Kammern-Grubgraben (Lower Austria) were analysed to test geochemical proxies, as well as radiocarbon data of different components for their reliability and consistency in an archaeological context. Only a reliable basal age (28.9  27.8 ka cal BP) was obtained from charcoal fragments derived from a tundra gley underlying the archaeological horizons and assigned to Greenland Interstadials 3 or 4. Grain size, organic and inorganic geochemistry, and stable isotopes of the fine organic fraction (13Corg) and of rhizoconcretions (13C, 18O) were analysed to provide information on palaeoenvironmental conditions. Low-resolution geochemical and sedimentological analyses document a humidity-related variability, while 13Corg values indicate a predominant C3 vegetation. High-resolution elemental variations derived from X-ray fluorescence scanning exhibit increasing Ca and decreasing Fe and Ti values indicating drier conditions towards the top. Secondary pedogenic carbonate concretions provide post-sedimentary (Holocene) ages and are not suitable for assessing climate and environmental changes for the Palaeolithic.

Description: This dataset includes counts, percentages and concentrations of all dinoflagellate cyst taxa identified in the benthic nephloid layer (BNL), cyst rain and surface sediments collected along a land-sea transect off Figueira da Foz (NW Portugal, Atlantic Iberian margin) during the Hydrographic Institute (IH)-HABWAVE cruise (16th-19th September 2019). Sampling of the dinoflagellate cyst community in the BNL, the water column (sediment trap) and the surface sediments (together with studies of spatio-temporal changes in physical properties) were carried out in order to investigate the dinoflagellate cyst distribution and the factors (physical and biological) affecting it. Water samples for cyst analyses were collected by a rosette firing system associated with the CTD, and the cyst rain using a sediment trap situated above the BNL. They were filtered (40-47 l) on board through a 150µm-nylon mesh sieve onto a 10µm-calibrated stainless steel sieve (Retsch). In the laboratory, cysts were concentrated by centrifugation. Full and empty cysts were counted to investigate whether a reservoir of viable cysts existed in the BNL. Surface sediments were sampled with a Smith McIntyre grab and using Plexiglass tubes (3.6 cm internal diameter) that were inserted in the sediment to recover the top 1-cm layer. Cysts from sediments were concentrated by density separation with sodium polytungstate (2.016 g/ml).

Description: A literature retrieval was performed for whole rock geochemical analyses of sedimentary, magmatic and metamorphic rocks in the catchment of River Thuringian Saale for the past 600 Ma. Considering availability and coincidence with paleontological an facies data the following indicators seem suitable to detect environmental and climatic changes: biogenic P for Paleoproductivity, STI Index for weathering intensity, Ni/Co-ratio for redox conditions, relative enrichments of Co, Ba and Rb versus crustal values for volcanic activity at varying differentiation. The Mg/Ca-ratio as proxy for salinity is applicable in evaporites. The binary plot Nb/Y versus Zr/TiO2 indicates a presently eroded volcanic level of the Bohemian Massif as catchment area for the Middle Bunter, whereas higly differentiated volcanics provided source material for Neoproterozoic greywackes. A positive Eu-anomaly is limited to the Lower Bunter and implies mafic source rocks perhaps formerly located in the Bohemian Massif.

Description: In the Campeche Hydrocarbon province in the southern Gulf of Mexico, large areas of the seafloor are rich in natural gas and highly viscous crude oil. To understand the influence of these hydrocarbons on porewater geochemistry, we cored sediments from specific sites by gravity coring, multicoring and push coring during Meteor Expedition M114-2 in March 2015. Onboard, we retrieved porewater from these samples by Rhizon sampling. In addition, some seawater samples were collected. In the home laboratory, we analyzed the subsamples for silicate, phosphate, ammonium, nitrate, nitrate using a multi-channel nutrient analyzer, for sulfate and chloride using an ion chromatograph, for sulfide using the diamine approach, and we analyzed the isotopic composition of dissolved inorganic carbon using a GasBench coupled to an isotope ratio mass spectrometer.

Description: The UK'37 sea surface temperature (SST) proxy, based on the distribution of long-chain akenones, was measured via mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) at 100-µm resolution in a 60-cm section of the well-dated core MD03-2621 from the Cariaco Basin (10.6782, -64.9715). This section spans an age of ~ 11.9 to 11.2 kyr b2k and thus includes the Younger Dryas-Holocene transition. Proxy data from each micrometer-sized spot were assigned to the upwelling and non-upwelling season based on the color of the sediment in that spot. As a result, separate records for the upwelling and non-upwelling seasons could be obtained. In order to translate UK'37 values into SST, a correction factor to account for differences between MSI-based data and conventional UK'37 data was applied. SST was calculated with the BAYSPLINE model.

Description: Between September 2016 and August 2017, we conducted year-long reciprocal transplantation experiments using the cold-water coral Desmophyllum dianthus along natural oceanographic horizontal and vertical gradients (vertically: 20 m to 300 m depth and horizontally: head to mouth of fjord) in Comau Fjord to study seasonal changes and the acclimatisation potential of its biochemical composition. Seasonal energy reserves (proteins, carbohydrates and lipids) and the C:N ratio of native and novel (cross-transplanted) corals were measured at six shallow (A-F, 20 m) and one deep station (Ed, 300 m) during autral summer (January), autumn (May) and winter (August).
