    Description: In den „Fallstudien zur Ethik in Wissenschaft, Wirtschaft, Technik und Gesellschaft“ werden zunächst in einleitenden Übersichtsbeiträgen „Fallanalysen im Ethikunterricht“ und die „Diffusion der Verantwortung“ behandelt. Einzelne Fallstudien befassen sich dann u. a. mit „Kernforschung und Atombombe“, „Verantwortungsfrage[n]in den Naturwissenschaften“ und der sog. Dual-use-Problematik, d. h. der sowohl zivilen als auch militärischen Nutzung von Forschungen. Hieran schließen sich an die Beispiele „Europäische Währungsunion“, „Konsumenten als verantwortliche Marktakteure“, kollektive und korporative Verantwortung und „Kindersklaven in der Kakaobranche“. Des Weiteren werden untersucht: „Technik und ihre Auswirkungen auf globale und lokale Arbeitsstrukturen“, „Verantwortungskonflikte in der Ingenieurarbeit“, verschiedene Arten von Katastrophen, der „(Nicht-)Umgang mit Technikfolgen in Russland“, „Nanotechnologie“ und „Autonome Systeme“. Mit den Möglichkeiten der Klimabeeinflussung befassen sich weitere Beiträge. Neu eingeführte Techniken sind Thema von „Körperscanner“ und „Serviceroboter in medizinischen Anwendungen“. Ethische und rechtliche Fragen im Arbeitsleben - insbesondere beim Whistleblowing - schließenden Band ab. Die vorliegenden Fallstudien behandeln zwar unterschiedliche Bereiche und Themen und zeigen doch eine Gemeinsamkeit: In allen Beispielen sind ethische Fragestellungen sinnvoll und möglich.

With increasing span widths and load capacities, the dimensions of the crane bridge also increase. The core of this work is the design and optimization of a new type of bridge crane system, which consists of individual segments and is eccentrically pretensioned by a tensile member.

    Description: The risk estimation of precipitation events with high recurrence periods is difficult due to the limited time scale with meteorological observations. A homogenous distribution of rain gauges, especially in mountainous terrain, is also hardly convertible. In this study an analytical model with a high spatial resolution, designed for stochastic simulations of flood-related precipitation, is developed, evaluated and applied to different investigation areas in Germany.

    Description: We study the potential of the silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) platform for integrated optics. The unique properties of selected organic materials are added to silicon devices made with CMOS-based processes. We investigate the feasibility of this approach by making prototypes of key components in form of photonic integrated circuits: SOH lasers and SOH modulators are designed, fabricated, post-processed, and characterized. Application scenarios are identified.

    Description: Reservoir quality in fluvial siliciclastic rocks is variable. Permeability is influenced by micron-scale grain coatings or bedding style on the m-/km-scale. Outcrops allow the analysis of depositional environments and diagenesis, thus an investigation of reservoir quality controls. A process-oriented approach is used to understand variability in a meander deposit, compaction and cementation behavior of lithofacies types during burial and the discrepancy between porosity and permeability values.

    Investigation of coherent microscopic defects inside the tunneling barrier of a Josephson junction (2021)

    Description: In disordered solids, two-level atomic-tunneling systems are present in large quantity. Only recently, superconducting qubits opened a door for a detection and individual coherent manipulation of such microscopic quantum systems. We succeeded to tune the resonance frequencies of these systems by applying external strain on the qubit chip. Moreover, we observed and analyzed the interaction between two coupled tunneling systems.

    Description: The focus of this work is on the modelling of the degradation behaviour of conventional lithium-ion cells with graphite/NMC electrodes in conjunction with electrolytes based on LiPF6 in organic solvents. The potential for improvements of parameterization methods dealing with physical-chemical aging effects and simulation studies for optimization of the battery lifetime is shown. In the process of model parameterization mostly data-based as well as non-invasive analysis methods are used.

    Description: This work describes the development of an ultra-light-weight Proton-Transfer-Reaction Mass Spectrometer (PTR-MS), its detailed qualification, ground-based and airborne applications and studies on VOC emissions in connection with fossil fuel production. The new system was used aboard a mobile laboratory in order to investigate the chemical fingerprints of the diverse emitters at oil and natural gas well pads. Emissions of aromatic hydrocarbons at a hydraulically fractured well have been studied.

    Description: This work investigates the capability of the high-temperature superconductor YBCO to sense the evolution of the electrical field of THz pulses. A deposition process for ten unit-cell thin films and a sub-µm patterning process were developed to enable high sensitivities. The detector response to THz exctiations and its electrical-field sensitivity were studied. This unique characteristic allows for the investigation of instabilities of the THz radiation emitted from synchrotron storage rings.

    Description: ECG recordings provide diagnostic relevant information on the de- and repolarisation sequences of the heart. A modification of the repolarisation sequence is assumed to cause Torsades de Pointes. Especially drug induced effects on the repolarisation processes are in focus, since some non-cardiac drugs have been associated with sudden cardiac death in the 1990s. The analysis of the ventricular repolarisation using a set of parameters depicting the morphology of the T-wave is introduced in this work. Therefore, new methods of fully automatic patient-specific QRS detection, beat classification and precise T-wave delineation are presented. Using these methods, medical studies are investigated regarding the modification of the T-wave by different compounds. Also the impact of the heart rate on the morphology of the T-wave is part of this research.The reliable identification of ventricular ectopic beats allows an analysis of the influence of these beats on subsequent heart beats. It turned out that the morphology of subsequent heart beats can significantly be changed. This might give new information on the proarrythmical risk of ventricular ectopic beats.

    Description: The main objectives of this book are (i) to investigate the electrochemical behavior and the analytical performance of a novel ultramicroelectrode array (UMEA); (ii) to assess the analytical parameters of square-wave anodic stripping voltammetric measurements (SWASV) using the UMEA; and (iii) to estimate the potential of the UMEA in developing decentralised analytical equipments for the determination of trace concentrations of heavy metals in natural waters. Surface analytical techniques (SEM, ESEM, and AFM) showed that the UMEA chips are of high quality in manufacture. Cyclic voltammetric and chronoamperometric experiments proved that the electrochemical behavior of the UMEA is dominated by the features characteristic for single microelectrodes.Chronocoulometry was found to be the most suitable method in generating the Hg-film of good quality. A new UMEA chip could be plated at least ten times, corresponding to about 500 measurements of trace metals in synthetic aqueous solutions. Using SWASV, detection limits of 〈0.1 ï¿g/l could be achieved for the metals (Pb, Cd). Precision and accuracy were found to be approx +/-10% of RSD.In natural waters, the results obtained with the UMEA sensor showed a reasonably good agreement with HR-ICP-MS analyses. Different experimental parameters were optimised and investigated. Interferences (e.g., DOC) were significantly reduced through medium exchange and standard addition. Ultrasonic bath proved to be very efficient in resurfacing electrodes in laboratory.The UMEA sensor shows a great potential in developing a portable trace metal analyzer. However, for in situ and on-site measurements, the protection of the UMEA sensor from fouling seems to be inevitable. In order to achieve a pure microelectrode behavior with the UMEA, increasing the ratio of interelectrode distance to electrode diameter is recommended for further developments.

    Description: In dieser Arbeit wird die anwendungsorientierte Entwicklung von Empfangsfiltern für das Radioteleskop des Max Planck Institutes für Radioastronomie (MPIfR) in Effelsberg vorge-stellt. Dort bestand großes Interesse an Bandpassfiltern für das 21 cm bzw. 11 cm Band, die bei radioastronomischen Polarisationsmessungen zum Einsatz kommen sollen. Für beide Bänder sind jeweils zwei zirkularpolarisierte Empfangskanäle auf ein Polarimeter geschaltet, das eine Empfängerrauschtemperatur von ca. 5 K besitzt. Die schmalbandigen Vorfilter für jeden einzelnen Kanal sollen daher im Durchlassbereich eine extrem kleine Dämpfung und möglichst identische Übertragungscharakteristiken (Streuparameter) bei einer Betriebstemperatur von 15 K aufweisen. Dabei soll dieses Ergebnis ohne jegliche nachträgliche mechanische Abstimmung, wie z. B. durch die Verwendung keramischer Schrauben, erreicht werden. Für die spätere Endmontage auf einem Kaltfinger im Hochvakuum, wird zudem ein möglichst hoher Grad an Miniaturisierung der einzelnen Bandpässe angestrebt, um die Packungsdichte des Komplettsystems zu erhöhen. Neben der notwendigen Filtersynthese, um die geforderten Übertragungscharakteristiken zu erreichen, werden die benötigten Materialien mit ihren Eigenschaften beschrieben, mittels derer die elektrischen Anforderungen der konzipierten Netzwerke erfüllt werden können. Darüber hinaus werden die Bauelemente, um das Ziel einer hohen Integration der einzelnen Bandpässe zu erreichen, und die Entwicklung sowie Auslegung koplanarer Leitungsresonatoren in Mäanderform für den modularen Aufbau der Bandpässe vorgestellt. Mit den gewonnenen Resultaten aus Simulationen und insbesondere Mes-sungen an realisierten Filterexemplaren schließt diese Arbeit.

    Description: Gyrotrons are high-power mm-wave tubes. Here, the design, construction and experimental investigation of a 20 kW, 28 GHz gyrotron (2nd harmonic) are reported. This tube was designed to evaluate new emitters for future highly efficient and reliable fusion gyrotrons and for material processing applications. Following experimental results have been achieved in CW operation: 22.5 kW output power at 23.4 kV electron beam voltage and 2.23 A beam current with the world record efficiency of 43 %.

    Partial oxidation of Raffinate II and other mixtures of n-Butane and n-Butenes to maleic anhydride in a fixed-bed reactor (2021)

    Description: The utilisation of the C4 streams of steamcrackers by converting raffinate II to maleic anhydride was studied. The oxidation reactions were investigated in a laboratory-scale fixed-bed reactor to determine reaction kinetics. The effects of pore diffusional resistance were investigated and explained. A two-dimensional pseudo-homogeneous reactor model was used for the simulation of a production-scale fixed-bed reactor. A flow scheme of the reactor section including a recycle was proposed.

    Description: Materials of industrial interest often show a complex microstructure which directly influences their macroscopic material behavior. For simulations on the component scale, multi-scale methods may exploit this microstructural information. This work is devoted to a multi-scale approach for brittle materials. Based on a homogenization result for free discontinuity problems, we present FFT-based methods to compute the effective crack energy of heterogeneous materials with complex microstructures.

    Description: X-ray phase contrast imaging is a highly promising technology for the clinical diagnostic. Particularly high demands are placed on the required X-ray gratings, as the core element of this method. Such gratings can be fabricated using LIGA-technology, where the structured area is currently limited to a few centimeters in the diagonal (e.g. 10 cm). In this work possibilities to enlarge the area of X-ray gratings, as they are required for the Talbot-Lau Interferometry, were developed and analyzed.

Nonlinearity is considered in two ways: First, propagation is improved by proposing novel methods for approximating continuous probability distributions by discrete distributions defined on the same continuous domain. Second, nonlinear underlying domains are considered by proposing novel filters that inherently take the underlying geometry of these domains into account.

    Description: In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde der Betrieb dielektrisch behinderte Entladung bei hoher Leistungsdichte und hoher Effizienz untersucht. Hierbei wurde eine Abhängigkeit der homogenen Entladung von der Stromdichte festgestellt. Die nötige Anregungsform wurde in einem resonanten Puls-Betriebsgerät verwirklicht, welches Wirkungsgrade bis 87 % erreicht. Durch goniometrische Strahlungsflussmessungen im UV wurden die erreichte Leistungsdichte und Plasma-Effizienz bestimmt.

It is the first step towards operating frequencies up to 240 GHz using the coaxial-cavity gyrotron technology.

Die erarbeitete Handlungsvorschrift wird an Beispielen aus dem Bereich der mobilen Arbeitsmaschinen verifiziert.

    Description: In this book, hybrid systems based on yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG), three dimensional microwave cavity resonators, and superconducting transmon qubits, are investigated by continuous wave and pulsed microwave spectroscopy. Limitations to the magnetic linewidth in the quantum regime are identified and coherent exchange between a magnon and a superconducting qubit are demonstrated. Finally, a first step towards a strongly coupled hybrid system containing all three components is demonstrated.

    Description: This works describes an approach to lane-precise localization on current digital maps. A particle filter fuses data from production vehicle sensors, such as GPS, radar, and camera. Performance evaluations on more than 200 km of data show that the proposed algorithm can reliably determine the current lane. Furthermore, a possible architecture for an intuitive route guidance system based on Augmented Reality is proposed together with a lane-change recommendation for unclear situations.

The introduction of automated driving systems withdraws this communication from drivers and thus, vehicles need to interact with pedestrians. Therefore, multiple vehicle-pedestrian-communication concepts are evaluated. A driver intention prediction allows pedestrians to learn these newly introduced signals, while driver and vehicle communicate simultaneously.

    Description: Based on the Somatic Marker Hypothesis, an attempt is made to measure the anticipation of risky traffic situations by means of the electrodermal activity. The results indicate that the strength of the anticipatory electrodermal activity is systematically related to situational factors of a traffic situation. In addition, a model was derived that postulates an inverted U-shaped relationship between driver’s experience and anticipatory electrodermal activity.
