    Description: Anthropologists have been appearing as key expert witnesses in native title claims for over 20 years. Until now, however, there has been no theoretically-informed, detailed investigation of how the expert testimony of anthropologists is formed and how it is received by judges. This book examines the structure and habitus of both the field of anthropology and the juridical field and how they have interacted in four cases, including the original hearing in the Mabo case. The analysis of background material has been supplemented by interviews with the key protagonists in each case. This allows the reader a unique, insider’s perspective of the courtroom drama that unfolds in each case. The book asks, given the available ethnographic research, how will the anthropologist reconstruct it in a way that is relevant to the legal doctrine of native title when that doctrine gives a wide leeway for interpretation on the critical questions: what is the relevant grouping, what can be counted as a traditional law and when has there been too much change of tradition? How will such evidence be received by judges who are becoming increasingly sceptical about experts tailoring their evidence to suit the party which called them? This book answers these questions by assuming that there is more at stake here than the mere performance of roles. Rather, there is a complex interaction of distinct social fields each with its own habitus, and individual actors are engaged in an active and constructive agency, however subtle, which the painstaking research for this book uncovers.

    Description: The site of Man Bac in the Red River Delta of Vietnam, one of the most meticulously excavated and carefully analysed of Southeast Asian archaeological sites in the past few years, is emerging as a key site in the region. This book carefully analyses the human and animal remains and puts them into context. The authors describe in detail the health status, the unusual demographic profile and the interestingly divergent affinities of the cemetery population, and discuss their meaning, particularly in association with evidence for the use of marine and terrestrial animal resources; they argue convincingly that the site documents a time when the face of the region’s population was undergoing a fundamental shift, associated with a changing economic subsistence base. Physical anthropologists and archaeologists have argued for years over the timeline, the manner and the very nature of Southeast Asian population history, and this book is essential reading in this debate. Two supporting appendices describe the individual remains in detail.

Cet ouvrage revient sur les bouleversements de la société marocaine, soulignant à la fois combien les changements dus aux processus de modernisation sont rapides, profonds et irréversibles, et combien sont fortes les résistances. Les valeurs musulmanes apparaissent comme un rempart à ce qui est vécu comme une occidentalisation des mœurs, et la famille comme la garante de leur préservation. Il en résulte cette crispation autour du statut de la femme et des normes religieuses, du corps et de la sexualité, avec laquelle se débattent les jeunes. Comment être moderne sans se dissoudre dans le modèle occidental ?

    Description: Small is beautiful ! Le petit est à la mode dans le monde vitivinicole : petites exploitations, petites appellations, cépages modestes, circuits courts. Le petit accompagne les préoccupations actuelles autour de la recherche du bien‑être et du respect de l'équilibre environnemental. Cette quête de l'authentique et du sain, que partagent de plus en plus consommateurs et producteurs, fait émerger des niches favorables aux « petits vins » et aux « petits vignobles ». Les critères traditionnels de hiérarchie des crus et des vignobles s'en trouvent reconsidérés, de même que la définition classique de la qualité des vins. Pourquoi les « grands » vins seraient-ils forcément bons quand des « petits » vins ne seraient au mieux que des curiosités intéressantes Par l'intermédiaire des sciences sociales, ce livre vise à réévaluer la perception, la place et les mutations des petits vignobles. Ainsi, il interroge en premier lieu le sens de « petit » dans le monde vitivinicole français, au travers de l'examen des vignobles de Madiran, de Buzet, de Bordeaux, du Rouergue, de Cahors, de Bourgogne et de Touraine. En analysant les spécificités de ces territoires de l'époque médiévale à nos jours, les auteurs mettent en lumière l'organisation du marché, les logiques spatiales et la diversité des pratiques viticoles en France. Dès lors, en décentrant le regard, les petits vignobles assurent une relecture de la viticulture nationale.

    Description: Scholars at War is the first scholarly publication to examine the effect World War II had on the careers of Australasian social scientists. It links a group of scholars through geography, transnational, national and personal scholarly networks, and shared intellectual traditions, explores their use, and contextualizes their experiences and contributions within wider examinations of the role of intellectuals in war. Scholars at War is structured around historical portraits of individual Australasian social scientists. They are not a tight group; rather a cohort of scholars serendipitously involved in and affected by war who share a point of origin. Analyzing practitioners of the social sciences during war brings to the fore specific networks, beliefs and institutions that transcend politically defined spaces.     Description: Lorsqu'au xvie siècle les mangeurs d'hommes - les anthropophages - reçoivent le nom de cannibales, c'est aussi une tradition millénaire qui adopte des formes nouvelles. Avant Colomb, il y a en effet une histoire occidentale de l'homme comme nourriture, mais celle-ci reste en grande partie à écrire. Le présent ouvrage contribue à combler cette lacune. Dans les récits et les images de l'ethnographie ancienne, l'anthropophage, qu'il mange ses ennemis ou ses défunts bien-aimés, est un être lointain, dont les coutumes bousculent les normes culturelles occidentales. Menace distante, alors, le cannibale ? Bien au contraire : on dit de groupes et d'individus marginaux qu'ils convoitent la chair d'enfants innocents pour leurs mystérieux rituels. On parle aussi d'affamés qui n'hésitent pas à dévorer leurs proches, de femmes désespérées qui mangent leurs enfants. Pendant ce temps, pourtant, du sang humain soigne, stimule, rassasie ou sanctifie, tandis que de pieux chrétiens consomment la chair du Christ sous les apparences de l'hostie. À l'aide des méthodes de l'histoire et des disciplines sœurs, l'auteur reconstitue un portrait tout en contrastes du tabou alimentaire par excellence.     Description: Le mezcal est la boisson identitaire des Mexicains. Issu de la distillation de l’agave, ce spiritueux est encore très mal connu en dehors de son pays d’origine. Ignoré du grand public, le véritable mezcal exerce une fascination transculturelle auprès des connaisseurs du monde entier. Cette eau-de-vie est aujourd’hui l’un des spiritueux les plus en vogue. L’histoire du mezcal c’est aussi celle du Mexique. Cette boisson symbolise la quintessence de la culture mexicaine. La fabrication artisanale, la large palette aromatique et la production biologique font la spécificité de cet « enfant terrible du Mexique ». Le renouveau du mezcal prend sa source au Mexique et aux États-Unis. Son passage par les circuits culturels internationaux participe à sa découverte et sa légitimation. Distillé et consommé principalement par les populations indigènes d’origine rurale, il a longtemps été ignoré, voire méprisé par les élites qui aujourd’hui en sont particulièrement friandes. Ce livre analyse le processus de réhabilitation du mezcal. Il donne à voir la manière dont se construit son nouveau statut symbolique, révèle les contradictions liées au développement économique du Mexique. Par là même, il mesure l’évolution des rapports économiques et sociaux qui sous-tendent ce processus. Combinant une analyse sociologique et historique, cet ouvrage propose au lecteur un véritable voyage au « pays du mezcal »

    Gunnar Landtman in Papua: 1910 to 1912 (2021)

    Description: Despite poverty and neglect the coastal Kiwai of the northern Torres Strait and Fly estuary are a strong and vibrant people with a long tradition of work in the marine industries of the Torres Strait. Regrettably their current social, economic and political problems are marginal to both Papua New Guinea and Australia. Gunnar Landtman’s research, undertaken between 1910 and 1912, is still a foundation stone for understanding the position of the Kiwai today. In those two years in Papua, Landtman managed to record a large collection of valuable legends and stories, many of which are still told today. He travelled widely throughout the Torres Strait, the southwest coast of Papua and the Fly estuary and even to the Gulf District. He made a comprehensive collection of Kiwai material culture now housed in the Museum of Cultures in Helsinki and a second, duplicate set for the Cambridge Museum. He also collected some of the earliest examples of Gogodala material culture available for research. In 1913, he published, Nya Guinea färden [New Guinea expedition], a detailed travelogue of his work and life among the Kiwai and, while he wrote a substantial corpus of work on the Kiwai in English, Swedish and Finnish over the next twenty years, this personal account in Swedish has not been translated into English before. It forms a crucial link between Landtman’s serious academic works and his intimate personal journey of discovery. The aim of this book is to bring the personal face of the serious anthropologist to greater attention. David Lawrence began studying the Gunnar Landtman collections held by the National Museum of Finland when he was researching customary exchange across the Torres Strait for his doctorate at James Cook University. He was also fortunate to be able to spend two years of fieldwork in the Fly estuary region and visited nearly all the communities described by Landtman. He is a Visiting Fellow at the Resource Management in Asia/Pacific program of The Australian National University and has published works on Kakadu National Park and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

    Description: The main theme of this volume is a discussion of the ways in which legal mechanisms, such as the Land Groups Incorporation Act (1974) in PNG, and the Native Title Act (1993) in Australia, do not, as they purport, serve merely to identify and register already-existing customary indigenous landowning groups in these countries. Because the legislation is an integral part of the way in which indigenous people are defined and managed in relation to the State, it serves to elicit particular responses in landowner organisation and self-identification on the part of indigenous people. These pieces of legislation actively contour the progressive evolution of landowner social, territorial and political organisation at all levels in these nation states. The contributors to this volume provide in-depth anthropological case studies of social structural and cultural transformations engendered by the confrontation between states, developers and indigenous communities over rights to customarily owned land.
