    Description: Religion as a form of cultural expression constitutes a critical element in the relationship between Germany and India. The discovery of Indian traditions in Germany and re-interpretations of those traditions in India fueled not only new theological and philosophical explorations, but also extensive innovations in the fields of music, dance, bodily experience, and political intervention. Seeking to uncover the enfolding of colonial thought structures through presentations of the Self, while placing them in the context of global colonial value chains that connected the peripheries with the centre, this interdisciplinary volume addresses India through the lens of an entangled relationship. Adopting the position that the acceleration of communication, technical development, and colonisation locally triggered re-interpretations of the religious sphere, This volume takes a look at the period from 1800 to the end of National Socialism, tracing the strands of an Indo-Germanic religion in the making as it goes along. A special emphasis is placed on the artistic expressions of religious experience including re-enactments of musical compositions and dance configurations, which were created to embody India in Germany. This is an open access book.

    The Winchester Mint and Coins and Related Finds from the Excavations of 1961-71 (2024)

    Description: Edited by Martin Biddle with a catalogue of the known coins of the mint by Yvonne Harvey, this volume records and illustrates the minting of silver pennies in Winchester between the reigns of Alfred the Great and Henry III, a period of three and a half centuries. At the Mint, which was situated in the area of the High Street to the east of where the city’s cross now stands, at least 24 million silver pennies (possibly as many as 50 million) were struck. Five and a half thousand survive in museums and collections all over the world. These have been sought out and photographed (some 3200 coins in 6400 images detailing both sides), and minutely catalogued by Yvonne Harvey for this volume. 〈br〉〈br〉 During the period from late in the reign of Alfred to the time of Henry III, dies for striking the coins were produced centrally under royal authority in the most sophisticated system of monetary control at the time in the western world. In this first account of a major English mint to have been made in forty years, a team of leading authorities have studied and analysed the use the Winchester moneyers made of the dies, and together with the size, weight, and the surviving number of coins from each pair of dies, have produced a detailed account of the varying fortunes of the mint over this period. Their results are critical for the economic history of England and the changing status of Winchester over this long period, and provide the richest available source for the history of the name of the city and the personal names of its citizens in the later Anglo-Saxon period.

    Description: This open access book explores knowledge practices by five women from different European contexts. Contributors document, analyze, and discuss how women employed practices of privacy to pursue knowledge that did not necessarily conform with the curriculum prescribed for them. The practices of Jane Lumley in England, Camila Herculiana in Padua, Victorine de Chastenay in Paris, as well as Elisabeth Sophie Marie and Philippine Charlotte in Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, will help us to exemplify the delicate balance between audacity and obedience that women had to employ to be able to explore science, literature, philosophy, theology, and other types of learned activities. Cases range from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century, presenting continuities and discontinuities across temporal and geographical lines of the strategies that women used to protect their knowledge production and retain intact their reputations as good Christian daughters, wives, and mothers. Taken together, the essays show how having access to privacy—the ability to regulate access to themselves while studying and learning—was a crucial condition for the success of the knowledge activities these women pursued. This is an open access book.

    Misrepresentation and Silence in United States History Textbooks (2024)

    Description: This open access book investigates how representation of Native Americans and Mexican-origin im/migrants takes place in high school history textbooks. Manually analyzing text and images in United States textbooks from the 1950s to 2022, the book documents stories of White victory and domination over Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) groups that disproportionately fill educational curricula. While representation and accurate information of non-White perspectives improves over time, the same limited tropes tend to be recycled from one textbook to the next. Textual analysis is augmented by focus groups and interviews with BIPOC students in California high schools. Together, the data show how misrepresentation and absence of BIPOC perspectives in textbooks impact youth identity. This book argues for an innovative rethinking of US history curricula to consider which stories are told, and which perspectives are represented.

Decidim is the world leading digital infrastructure for participatory democracy, built entirely and collaboratively as free software, and used by more than 500 institutions with over three million users worldwide. The platform allows any organization (government, association, university, NGO, neighbourhood, or cooperative) to support multitudinous processes of participatory democracy. In a context dominated by corporate-owned digital platforms, in the era of increasing social structuring via Artificial Intelligence, Decidim stands as a public or community owned platform for collective human intelligence. Yet, the project is much more than its technological features. Decidim is in itself a crossroad of the various dimensions of the networked society, a detailed practical map of its complexities and conflicts. The authors distinguish three general dimensions of the project: (1) the political - shedding light on the democratic model that Decidim promotes and its impact on public policies and organizations, (2) the technopolitical - explaining how this technology is democratically designed and managed to produce and protect certain political effects, and (3) the technical - presenting the conditions of production, operation, and success of the project.     Description: The coup in Myanmar on 1 February 2021 abruptly reversed a decade-long flirtation with economic and political freedoms. The country has since descended into civil war, the people have been plunged back into conflict and poverty, and the state is again characterised by fragility and human insecurity. As the Myanmar people oppose the regime and fight for their rights, the international community must find ways to act in solidarity.     Description: Advances in UAE Archaeology details the results of new excavations conducted across the United Arab Emirates over the last few years. These excavations have revealed a wealth of new data on all periods of UAE archaeology from the Palaeolithic to the recent past. Some of these discoveries have filled in important gaps in our knowledge, while others have fundamentally revised what we thought we knew already. For example, the Marawah Island excavations have added a new facet to our understanding of the Neolithic period by revealing intriguing and hitherto unknown funerary rituals. Excavations in Al Ain in the emirate of Abu Dhabi continue to reveal extraordinary evidence of emgt falaj emgirrigation, stretching back 3000 years. The ubiquity of this system across this oasis city further validates its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of particular importance is the discovery of extensive remains from the Late Pre-Islamic period, a significant time in history that has been best revealed in the excavations at Mleiha in the emirate of Sharjah.The research presented here was conducted by specialists from across the world working alongside an ever-growing cadre of Emirati archaeologists who will take the lead in the coming years in revealing more of this country’s extraordinary archaeology and history.

From sharing personal matters to discussing delicate secrets, all layers of early modern society had their motives for wanting to keep certain exchanges out of public eyes and ears, and ways of trying to achieve this. Detecting such instances in historical sources typically becomes a complex pursuit, full of subtle references that require creative approaches, especially when it comes to more informal practices. Yet, in a reading against the grain, different sources can offer us hints of how conversations took place in private. The book consists of a historiographical and methodological introduction to the study of private conversations, followed by ten case studies from a variety of cities, villages, and countryside across early modern Europe. The concluding epilogue suggests some pathways to further explore the terrain of how people have talked in private in past societies.

    Description: On 24 May 1966, eight hundred men of the 5th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, landed at Nui Dat, in Viet Cong territory. For the next 12 months they were faced with the task of restoring peace, civil law and regular commerce to the Vietnamese of Phuoc Tuy province. This book is a detailed record of those months in the monsoon jungles—of the problems that were faced and the solutions that were found. Captain O’Neill’s position as battalion intelligence officer enabled him to view the war from the standpoint of the battalion as a whole. However, he does not omit description of personal feelings—towards the Viet Cong, the jungle environment and the Vietnamese people, as well as the other Allied forces involved in the war. Most of the book was written on the spot in Vietnam. On operations or at Battalion Headquarters, Captain O’Neill jotted down details of the war against the Viet Cong, putting the events of each day in order, often in the small hours of the following morning. Thus not only is this a factual account of the 5th Battalion’s activities over the year; it is also a vivid and compelling picture of the war in Vietnam from the soldier’s point of view.

    Description: This open access book shows how the adoption of global justice, such as eradication of female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), has given rise to controversy, resistance, and transformation at the national, regional, and grass-roots levels in African and Asian countries where FGM/C has been practiced. It provides readers with up-to-date information about the effects of the campaign to eradicate FGM/C and the present situation of those countries, to which preceding books on FGM/C have scarcely referred. Adopting “zero tolerance” as a policy of eradication, WHO and other UN agencies have opposed any type of FGM/C, and many African countries have criminalized the practice. Although the campaign is based on the human rights discourse which is shared globally, the controversies concerning eradication of FGM/C on the national level and the responses of communities on the local level in those countries are diverse and complicated. Various actors such as NGOs, government officials, religious leaders, medical workers, and local inhabitants are embroiled and negotiate with each other concerning its eradication. With this book, readers are provided with an in-depth analysis of the complicated controversies and responses of local communities, referring to their particular historical and social backgrounds. The book provides two chapters on FGM/C in Asian countries, where not many studies have done yet. It also presents readers with a study of the arguments and responses to FGM/C of African immigrants by Australian health-care professionals as well as a study of male circumcision eradication campaigns, which have been carried on in tandem with FGM/C eradication campaigns but still not have been successful. With its many elaborate case studies, this book is highly recommended to readers who seek an in-depth and up-to-date integrated overview of the FGM/C studies as well as studies on the applicability of global justice to local communities.

The implications of the Russian military invasion are many and difficult to grasp in full. However, the need for greater European strategic autonomy appears increasingly evident. The book argues that strategic autonomy may be reached—also in the short run—if differentiated integration is seen as an asset rather than a challenge. While the EU (together with NATO) remains the core in such a system, there is a multitude sub-regional integration processes that need to be taken into account to get the full idea of how European strategic autonomy can be achieved.

    Description: Over the past few decades, there has been a significant amount of research on the Roman Lower Danube frontier by international teams focusing on individual forts or broader landscape survey work; collectively, this volume represents the best of this collaboration with the aim of elevating the Lower Danube within broader Roman frontier scholarship.The Lower Danube, running between Singidunum (modern Belgrade) and Halmyris in the Danube Delta, was one of the most densely fortified regions of the Roman Empire. The region has long been a border zone, today forming part of the border between Serbia and Romania, and the majority of the border between Romania and Bulgaria. Despite its importance for understanding both Roman frontier policy and the relationship between ancient and modern borderscapes, the region has not yet made its full contribution to international Roman scholarship. Bridging the theoretical divide that exists between different regional research traditions, chapters in this volume focus on sites like Ratiaria, in modern north-western Bulgaria, while other contributors examine the complex landscape from a wider perspective oriented around roads, temporary camps, or early Christian sites. The Roman Lower Danube Frontier emphasises the importance of engaging with Roman frontier landscapes, particularly in regions such as East-Central Europe, where they remain part of a contemporary borderscape.

    Description: This open access book discusses the emergence and development, and in some cases also the disappearance, of social movements and activism in Sweden during the 1980s. Its aim is to nuance and problematize the image of the 1980s as unilaterally dominated by right-wing politics and neoliberalism, as well as the idea of a conflict-free Scandinavian model. The 1980s have often been described as a period when the influence of radical-left movements during the 1970s diminished. Instead, this book argues that the 1980s was a decade in which new radical social movements emerged in opposition to the prevalent political order, including the nuclear disarmament movement, the women's movement, anti-fascist movements, and the punk and environmental movements. The authors also demonstrate how issues such as squatting, nuclear resistance, rent strikes and the environment, included a variety of contentious collective action. Sweden, therefore, presents an interesting example of how resistance and conflict in a strong welfare state have been influenced by contentious social movements. Placing Sweden within the wider context of Scandinavia and Europe, this edited collection makes an important contribution to the history of social movements.

    Points of Entanglement in French Caribbean Travel Writing (1620-1722) (2023)

    Description: This open-access book investigates Francophone Caribbean literature by exploring and analyzing French seventeenth-century travel writings. The book argues for a literary re-examination of the representation of the early colonial Caribbean by proposing theoretical linkages to contemporary Caribbean theories of creolization and archipelagic thinking. Using Édouard Glissant’s notion of points of entanglement, Christina Kullberg claims that the historical, social, and political messiness of the Caribbean seventeenth century make for complex representations and expressions, generating textual instability despite the travelers’ apparent desires to domesticate the islands. Taking a synoptic approach to travel narratives in French from 1620 up to the publication of Labat’s Nouveau voyage aux Isles de l’Amérique in 1722, Kullberg examines textual instances where the islands and the peoples of this period disrupt and unsettle dominant French narratives and enter productively into the construction of knowledge and the representations of the region. Kullberg’s contribution is to read French early modern travels in situ as shaped by the archipelagic geography, its history and social formations in order to interrogate both the construction and the limitations of discourses of power.

Amid the growing debate about models of judicial governance and their relationship to democratic quality, this book offers a systematic and empirical study of this relationship. The book thereby contributes to filling in this gap for the European continent. Taking an interdisciplinary politics and law perspective, and combining empirical and theoretical considerations, the book addresses the important link between democracy and judicial governance. In particular, it provides for three interconnected contributions. First, the book provides for a comprehensive classification of European countries into different models of judicial governance. Second, the book analyses empirically the relationship between the design of judicial governance and the quality of democracy. Third, building on those findings, the book presents policy reflections for the reform and improvement of mechanisms for judicial governance in European countries. The book seeks to refine our knowledge about the relationship between judicial governance and democracy, making an important academic and social contribution. In an era in which many democracies backslide and deconsolidate, it assesses to what extent existing mechanisms for judicial governance have contributed to the stability and quality of democratic systems in which they are implemented. Furthermore, the book puts forward reflections to improve the role of organs for judicial governance in fostering the quality of democracy. Since the book introduces in an accessible form key concepts of Judicial Governance, it will be of interest for the general public as well as academics and students in the fields of Law and Political Science. The book also addresses policy makers, as based on our empirical knowledge about the interaction judicial governance and democracy it puts forward ideas for a design of judicial governance that is more capable of protecting democratic systems of government.

    Description: European culture has been greatly influenced by the Christian Church and Greek and Roman culture. However, the peoples of Europe’s remote past, whom the Greeks, Romans, and their medieval heirs called the «barbarians», also left their mark. Closely examining ancient and medieval narratives and the codifications of laws, this thoughtfully conducted comparative study sheds light on the illiterate societies of the early Germanic and Slavic peoples. The picture that emerges is one of communities built on kinship, neighborly, and tribal relations, where decision making, judgement, and punishment were carried out collectively, and the distinction between the sacred and profane was unknown.

    Description: This open access book offers an entangled history of hygiene by showing how knowledge of purity, health and cleanliness was shaped by evangelical medical missionaries and their encounters with people in West Africa. By tracing the interactions and negotiations of six Basel Mission doctors, who practised on the Gold Coast and in Cameroon from 1885 to 1914, the author demonstrates how notions of religious purity, scientific health and colonial cleanliness came together in the making of hygiene during the age of High Imperialism. The heyday of evangelical medical missions abroad coincided with the emergence of tropical medicine as a scientific discipline during what became known as the Scramble for Africa. This book reveals that these projects were intertwined and that hygiene played an important role in all three of them. While most historians have examined modern hygiene as a European, bourgeois and scientific phenomenon, the author highlights both the colonial and the religious fabric of hygiene, which continues to shape our understanding of purity, health and cleanliness to this day.

    Description: This open access book explores the organization and evolution of Finland’s Cold War cultural diplomacy (1945-1975) as the basis for a reflection on the country’s foreign relations, the link between culture and politics, small states’ autonomy during the Cold War, and the porosity of the East-West divide. The book offers a historical survey of the development of Finland’s cultural diplomacy as part of the Finnish state’s foreign activities. In its empirical parts, it focuses on archives drawn from the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education in order to explain Finland’s cultural diplomacy as the result of the country’s foreign policy orientations, interactions between domestic and foreign policy, and the expansion of state activities in the artistic, educational, and cultural sectors. Various reflections and reports on foreign cultural relations highlight the role of identity concerns, cultural relations, geopolitics and economic imperatives in the development of a specifically Finnish cultural diplomacy. Furthermore, the book focuses on specific aspects and events, considering for instance the organization and evolutions of Finland’s cultural relations with the USSR, the role of cultural treaties, academic exchanges and scientific cooperation, “cultural exports” and the marketization of culture, overlaps between cultural relations and high politics.

This monograph seeks to draw lessons from this experience, so as to make the republican venture one of substance for the Australian public. In so doing, Power draws on a range of republican, indigenous and feminist writings in order to develop a new framework of 'fiducial governance' aimed at enhancing the trustworthiness and integrity of our institutions of governance, thereby paving the way for the replacement of the monarch by a directly elected head of state. This is an erudite and thoughtful book that will be of interest to those with an interest in systems of governance and to constitutional scholars, whether they be republicans or monarchists.

The study acknowledges Ireland’s history of damaging silences and considers its legacies, but it also underscores how silence can serve as a valuable, even productive, means of expression. From a wide range of critical perspectives, the individual essays address, among other issues, the conspiracies of silence in Catholic Ireland, the silenced structural oppression of Celtic Tiger Ireland, the recovery of silenced stories/voices of the past and their examination in the present, as well as millennial disaffection and the silencing of vulnerability in today’s neoliberal Ireland.     Description: The main theme of this volume is a discussion of the ways in which legal mechanisms, such as the Land Groups Incorporation Act (1974) in PNG, and the Native Title Act (1993) in Australia, do not, as they purport, serve merely to identify and register already-existing customary indigenous landowning groups in these countries. Because the legislation is an integral part of the way in which indigenous people are defined and managed in relation to the State, it serves to elicit particular responses in landowner organisation and self-identification on the part of indigenous people. These pieces of legislation actively contour the progressive evolution of landowner social, territorial and political organisation at all levels in these nation states. The contributors to this volume provide in-depth anthropological case studies of social structural and cultural transformations engendered by the confrontation between states, developers and indigenous communities over rights to customarily owned land.

    Description: Under a Memorandum of Understanding between Indonesia and Australia, traditional Indonesian fishermen are permitted access to fish in a designated area inside the 200 nautical mile Australian Fishing Zone (AFZ). However, crew and vessels are regularly apprehended for illegal fishing activity outside the permitted areas and, after prosecution in Australian courts, their boats and equipment are destroyed and the fishermen repatriated to Indonesia. This is an ethnographic study of one group of Indonesian maritime people who operate in the AFZ. It concerns Bajo people who originate from villages in the Tukang Besi Islands, Southeast Sulawesi. It explores the social, cultural, economic and historic conditions which underpin Bajo sailing and fishing voyages in the AFZ. It also examines issues concerning Australian maritime expansion and Australian government policies, treatment and understanding of Bajo fishing. The study considers the concept of “traditional” fishing regulating access to the MOU area based on use of unchanging technology, and consequences arising from adherence to such a view of “traditional”; the effect of Australian maritime expansion on Bajo fishing activity; the effectiveness of policy in providing for fishing rights and stopping illegal activity, and why Bajo continue to fish in the AFZ despite a range of ongoing restrictions on their activity.

Offering a comparative perspective on five post-Soviet Central Asian states—Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Tajikistan, it examines compliance with international human rights standards in these countries. The contributions capture various aspects of human rights dissemination through educational programs, seminars, training, and empowerment programs at Central Asian universities, together with Central Asian NGOs/CSOs and international organizations. The book shows that a change of behavior among state and non-state actors in the region can only happen when both local and international actors, usually international donors, jointly take action to report, train, and empower people in human rights. This book is an invitation to anyone interested in the (troubled) nexus between international human rights norms and standards and their implementation on the local level, as well as in the effective empowerment of citizen in the region.

    Description: The Search for Wellbeing and Health between the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period compiles a series of works on cosmetics and health care, covering different geographical areas of Europe. The studies also focus on different cultures, with some chapters dedicated to the Hebrew sphere, others to the Muslim world, and a larger percentage dealing with Christian society. The contributions make use of some very important written sources: recipe books and treatises on medicine and cosmetics, especially those preserved from the Late Middle Ages (13th-15th centuries) onwards. These manuscripts reveal the raw materials used to make certain products, whose origin could be vegetable, animal or mineral. Many were used to combat various ailments, but also to take care of the body aesthetically. Thus, there are remedies to heal the eyes; to avoid problems with the teeth and to make them shine white; creams and soaps for the skin; hair dyes to avoid grey hair; lotions to combat baldness; and even diverse gastronomic recipes to obtain inner wellbeing. Other contributions take a more practical perspective. Studies are included in which some of the ingredients and products are explored through experimental archaeology (chemical analysis) and faunal remains obtained from archaeological campaigns are analysed in the laboratory, showing the Christian diet. Overall the book demonstrates the importance of healthcare and cosmetics in past societies that had very significant technical knowledge of a multitude of completely natural and sustainable products.

    Description: Male-dominated law and legal knowledge essentially characterized the whole of pre-modern history in that the patriarchy represented the axis of social relations in both the private and public spheres. Indeed, modern and even contemporary law still have embedded elements of patriarchal heritage, even in the secular modern legal systems of Western developed countries, either within the content of legislation or in terms of its implementation and interpretation. This is true to a greater or lesser extent across legal systems, although the secular modern legal systems of the Western developed countries have made great advances in terms of gender equality. The traditional understanding of law has always been self-evidently dominated by men, but modern law and its understanding have also been more or less “malestreamed.” Therefore, it has become necessary to overcome the given “maskulinity” of legal thought. In contemporary legal and political orders, gender mainstreaming of law has been of the utmost importance for overcoming deeply and persistently embedded power relations and gender-based, unequal social relations. At the same time and equally importantly, the gender mainstreaming of legal education – to which this book aims to contribute – can help to gradually eliminate this male dominance and accompanying power relations from legal education and higher education as a whole. This open access textbook provides an overview of gender issues in all areas of law, including sociological, historical and methodological issues. Written for students and teachers around the globe, it is intended to provide both a general overview and in-depth knowledge in the individual areas of law. Relevant court decisions and case studies are supplied throughout the book.

    Description: 'No nation can escape its geography', warned Percy Spender, Australia's Minister for External Affairs, in 1950. With the immediate turmoil of World War II over, communism and decolonisation had ended any possibility that Asia could continue to be ignored by Australia. In the early 1950s, Australia embarked on its most ambitious attempt to engage with Asia: the Colombo Plan. This book examines the public and private agendas behind Australia's foreign aid diplomacy and reveals the strategic, political and cultural aims that drove the Colombo Plan. It examines the legacy of WWII, how foreign aid was seen as crucial to achieving regional security, how the plan was sold to Australian and Asian audiences, and the changing nature of Australia's relationship with Britain and the United States. Above all this is the question of how Australia sought to project itself into the region, and how Asia was introduced into the Australian consciousness.     Description: This Open access book provides a survey of the economic, health, and somatic progress of Baltic countries during the period 1918–2018, framed by the outline of the historical-sociological theory of modern social restorations, as originally conceived by the Austrian-American comparative historian Robert A. Kann. The author reworks Kann's theory to analyse post-communist transformations in the Baltic region. The book argues that the purpose of modern social restorations is to make restoration societies safe against a recurrence of revolution. There were two waves of modern social restorations: post-Napoleonic and post-communist. Most post-Napoleonic restorations were brief, because they failed to economically and socially outperform the pre-revolutionary and post-revolutionary systems. It considers Baltic restorations as laboratory cases of second-wave modern social restorations, because they encompass a triple restoration of the nation-state, capitalism, and democracy. The book assesses the performance success of Baltic restorations by comparing economic and social progress of Baltic countries during the periods of original independence (1918–1940), foreign-imposed state socialism (1940–1990), and restored independence (since 1990). It then elaborates the criteria to assess the ultimate performance success of these restorations by 2040, when restored Baltic states may endure longer than their ancestors in 1918–1940 and the complete foreign occupations era (1940–1990). The author, an expert in historical sociology, uses extensive historical-statistical data in cross-time comparisons to develop his analysis and create future projections. This book is of wide interest to sociologists, social demographers, political scientists, and economists studying the Baltic region. This is an open access book.

Roman land division and a probable villa in the hinterland of Deva reports on excavations carried out by Northern Archaeological Associates (NAA) at Saighton Camp – a former British Army training camp – located to the south of the Roman legionary fortress of Chester (Deva Victrix) which revealed important and extensive Roman period remains. Part of a high-status settlement of second- to fourth-century date, together with a regular field system laid out over more than 20 hectares, were encountered.The excavated settlement appears to be an ancillary area to a much larger site, the centre of which lies to the south and is believed to be a villa. This is the closest such site to Chester, and villas are notably rare in the region. The field system was probably laid out by the legion at Deva as part of the prata legionis, agricultural lands they controlled around the fortress.

It builds a structural interpretation based on empirical data, as well as offering reflections on the future structure of the discipline. In the middle of a delicate phase of changes marked by the effects of pandemic and the war in Ukraine, we need to pay attention to the factors that are affecting not only the ‘objects’ of Political Science as a discipline but also its interactions with the world around it. First, this book asks to what extent the work of European political scientists is impacted by the current change. Second, their attitudes and predisposition about the future goals of the discipline are analysed. In the final chapter, the authors seek to understand to what extent a diffuse but still not completely institutionalized academic discipline will be able to produce a comprehensive impact around the European society, in order to be more visible and effective in policy making and policy processes.

    Description: This open access book focuses on the importance that EU politicization has gained in European democracies and the consequences for voting behaviour in six countries of the EU: Belgium, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain. Most of the studies which research the way the EU is being legitimised focus on the European Parliament elections. In this book we argue that to understand how EU accountability works, it is necessary to focus instead on national elections and the national political environment. Through a detailed, multimethod analysis this book establishes rigorously the paths of European accountability at the national level, its propitious contexts in the media and parliamentary debates, and whether the paths are similar from Greece to Germany. The findings have implications for both national and European Union democracy, underlining the importance that national institutions have in enabling citizens to hold the EU accountable.

    Description: Papua New Guinea’s general election in 2007 attracted particular interest for several reasons. Not only did it follow what was widely acknowledged as the country’s worst election ever, in 2002 (in which elections in six of the country’s 109 electorates were declared to be ‘failed elections’), it was the first general election to be held under a new limited preferential voting system. It also followed the first full parliamentary term under the Organic Law on the Integrity of Political Parties and Candidates, which had been introduced in 2001 in an attempt to strengthen political parties and create a greater degree of stability in the national parliament, and was the first to embrace a ‘whole-of-government’ approach to electoral administration, through an Interdepartmental Electoral Committee. This volume provides an analysis of the 2007 election, drawing on the work of a domestic monitoring team organized through the National Research Institute, and several visiting scholars. It addresses key issues such as voter education, electoral administration, election security, the role of political parties, women as candidates and voters, the shift to limited preferential voting, and HIV transmission, and provides detailed accounts of the election in a number of open and provincial electorates. It is generally agreed that the election of 2007 was an improvement on that of 2002. But problems of electoral administration and voting behaviour remain. These are identified in this volume, and recommendations made for electoral reform.

    Description: Between Roman Culture and Local Tradition presents a detailed analysis of the Roman provincial coinage of Bithynia and Pontus during the reign of Trajan (98-117), when 14 cities struck coins. The book characterises individual mints, the rhythm of monetary production, iconography and legends, and considers the attribution and dating of individual issues. Context is provided by studies on other categories of artefacts discovered in the local area, including epigraphic and material ones, such as fine art, sculptures and architectural remains. The extent of circulation is also analysed, as well as the coinage of the border centres of neighbouring provinces such as Thrace, Asia and Galatia-Cappadocia. Reference is made to historical sources, principally the correspondence of Pliny the Younger with the emperor, which can help to show the realities of life for the inhabitants of individual centres, including ongoing construction projects or local problems. Overall the book aims to reconstruct the coinage policy of individual cities and culture and religion in various centres during this period, as well as contacts and relationships among the local communities. In turn, the studies of individual cities allow for the creation of a general picture of coinage in the province.

    Description: This open access book explores the history of pellagra, a vitamin deficiency disease brought about by a shift in agriculture to maize, and which was first identified in Italy in the 1760s. With a focus on the insanity that was caused by the disease, the authors examine how thousands of patients were treated in Italian psychiatric asylums, shedding light on the sufferer’s point of view. Setting pellagrous insanity in a wider context of man-made or societal (anthropogenic) disease, where poverty, diet and disease meet, the book contributes to the history of medicine and science, the history of psychiatry, economic and social history, agrarian history, and food and nutrition history. Additionally, the authors aim to transnationalise Italian history by making comparisons with related issues, such as tertiary syphilis in the UK. Drawing from a wide range of printed and archival sources, including the writings of Italian medical investigators, the book examines how medical and scientific research was carried out during the long nineteenth century and the uncertainties that this engendered, in terms of classification, explanation, diagnosis and treatment. Offering a unique perspective on an endemic illness which came to be known as the disease of the four ds: dermatitis; diarrhea; dementia; and death, this book provides an engaging account of one of the most perplexing causes of mental illness.

    Description: The Pacific Trade and Development (PAFTAD) conference series has been at the forefront of analysing challenges facing the economies of East Asia and the Pacific since its first meeting in Tokyo in January 1968. The 38th PAFTAD conference met at a key time to consider international economic integration. Earlier in the year, the people of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union and the United States elected Donald Trump as their next president on the back of an inward-looking ‘America First’ promise. Brexit and President Trump represent a growing, and worrying, trend towards protectionism in the North Atlantic countries that have led the process of globalisation since the end of the Second World War. The chapters in the volume describe the state of play in Asian economic integration but, more importantly, look forward to the region’s future, and the role it might play in defending the global system that has underwritten its historic rise. Asia has the potential to stand as a bulwark against the dual threats of North Atlantic protectionism and slowing trade growth, but collective leadership will be needed regionally and difficult domestic reforms will be required in each country.

    Description: This book is a collection of essays in Indonesian history and archaeology dealing with different and multiple trajectories, along four broad themes. The first part of the book covers competing or evolving representations of events, customs or traditions, and historical personae in Indonesian official and popular expression, as they are shaped by economic, political, and cultural forces. The second part deals with memories of war and peace, examining transnational conflict and collaboration, the role of political elites and state projects dealing with the aftermath of military aggression, while also focusing on the impact and responses of civilians. The third part focuses on how state and civil societies frame historical figures, in ways that transcend the dichotomy of heroes and victims. The fourth part of the book looks at the way Indonesian museums and museology serve as sites where new kinds of memory work occur, in a post-1998 era. The book is designed with the aim of clearing a space for a plurality of memory works. Discussions in this volume extend from Loloda island in Eastern Indonesia, to Sabang island at the north westernmost end of the archipelago, and to the cosmopolitan centers. Temporally, it covers the colonial, the post-independence and contemporary eras. By juxtaposing diverse works, the book offers a new vista of multiple trajectories of memory being traced out in and about Indonesia. This is an open access book.

    Description: May 19, 2000. Fiji's democratically elected multiracial government is hijacked by a group of armed gunmen led by George Speight, and held hostage for fifty days. Suva, the capital, is torched and looted as Speight's supporters gather on the lawns of the parliamentary complex, dancing, cooking food, celebrating the purported abrogation of the constitution that brought the People's Coalition government to power. The country is plunged into darkness yet again, enduring the pain of three coups in a period of just thirteen years. The process of healing and reconciliation, symbolised by the enactment of a new Constitution, unanimously approved by Parliament and blessed by the powerful Great Council of Chiefs, lies discarded, as winds of ethnic chauvinism sweep through the countryside, damaging the fragile fabric of multiculturalism that was carefully constructed by so many over many years. The economy is on the brink of collapse, investor confidence has vanished, and the best and the brightest are seeking succour on other shores. Fiji falls victim, yet again, to the prejudice and greed of a section of its people. This book gathers together a handful of memoirs of those tragic events in Fiji. They were written while the gun was still smoking; personal, anguished reactions of people from all walks of life, concerned about a country they all love but deeply distressed by the developments there. They are first reactions. They will in time become essential building blocks for a larger interpretive framework of academic analysis about origins, processes and impacts. Straight from the heart, these memoirs will be remembered as the people of Fiji and their friends elsewhere contemplate the wreckage and ruin brought about by that act of madness in the month of May 2000.

    Description: Following a bloody civil war, peace consolidated slowly and sequentially in Bougainville. That sequence was of both a top-down architecture of credible commitment in a formal peace process and layer upon layer of bottom-up reconciliation. Reconciliation was based on indigenous traditions of peacemaking. It also drew on Christian traditions of reconciliation, on training in restorative justice principles and on innovation in womens' peacebuilding. Peacekeepers opened safe spaces for reconciliation, but it was locals who shaped and owned the peace. There is much to learn from this distinctively indigenous peace architecture. It is a far cry from the norms of a 'liberal peace' or a 'realist peace'. The authors describe it as a hybrid 'restorative peace' in which 'mothers of the land' and then male combatants linked arms in creative ways. A danger to Bougainville's peace is weakness of international commitment to honour the result of a forthcoming independence referendum that is one central plank of the peace deal.

Since 2017, without interruption until the present, various excavation and study campaigns have focused their efforts on the pier via an inter- and multidisciplinary methodology involving archaeologists, geologists, palaeobotanists and palaeontologists. Thus, excavation activities, geophysical prospecting, petrographic, archaeometric studies and architectural analysis have been developed, always with the application of new photogrammetric techniques and laser scanning, which have allowed us to obtain a significant volume of data. Its analysis and interpretation now gives the most extensive and up-to-date picture of one of the most interesting and extensive docks in Portus, with new contributions related to its chronology, with a building phase from the fourth century AD; its construction system, whose foundations have been determined; the surrounding paleoenvironment, with new data related to the silting process of the Claudio inlet; as well as the changes that occured in the transition to the Early Middle Ages, among others.

    Description: This Open Access edited collection calls for a greater understanding of ‘the local’ within the ways the arts, culture and creative practices are governed, promoted, regulated, resourced and valued. Cultural policy studies tends to privilege the national (and international) as the primary site at which cultural policy is enacted, and focuses on the ‘local’ as a case study of practice, rather than a site of policy in its own right. While this may make global policy transfer manageable for national policy agencies, it ignores the contingent relationships, diverse geographies and distinct identities of localities. This volume addresses this gap and is structured around three themes: disciplining the local, which examines key concepts from different academic fields of study; managing the local, which identifies policy approaches that engage with the idea of ‘the local’ in different ways; and practising the local, which offers case studies of how ‘local’ cultural policies are being enacted in places of differing scale and geography.

    Description: Viet Nam has seen consistent rapid economic growth and impressive declines in poverty since it initiated its Doi Moi economic reforms in the late 1980s. Viet Nam has taken a selective, step-by-step approach to reform—an approach often criticised by proponents of the Washington Consensus. That this approach has been so successful has come as something of a surprise to much of the international community. Analysing closely aspects of Viet Nam's reform process, enterprise development, income growth and poverty alleviation, Viet Nam: a transition tiger? argues that Viet Nam's remarkable development is not readily explained by the more orthodox versions of the Washington Consensus. Successful policy is not built on mechanistic replication of some general reform blueprint, but on responding pragmatically to specific national circumstances. Government policy has had an impact on economic performance but economic experience has also guided the formulation of economic policy. Faced with increasingly complex economic conditions, Vietnamese policymakers will need to rely more than ever on their flexibility and pragmatism if Viet Nam's remarkable economic performance is to be sustained.

    Description: Aux xvie et xviie siècles, l’ordre européen était parfois menacé par des crises d’origine régionale. Ces désordres venaient des initiatives scandaleuses d’acteurs politiques habituellement peu présents sur la scène internationale (municipalités, institutions provinciales, seigneurs locaux). Pour résoudre des conflits internes, parfois contre leur propre souverain, ces acteurs n’hésitaient pas à appeler des puissances étrangères à leur secours, dans des logiques de solidarités politico-religieuses internationales. Les « affaires de Provence» (1580-1598) permettent de comprendre le fonctionnement de ce type de crises. Au plus fort des guerres de Religion en France, les catholiques de Provence appelèrent à leur secours le duc de Savoie, le grand-duc de Toscane, les papes et le roi d’Espagne. Parce que la Provence avait une position stratégique entre Barcelone et Gênes, d’autres puissances intervinrent à leur tour: l’Angleterre, l’Empire ottoman, le duché de Lorraine et la République de Venise. À partir d’une étude minutieuse des événements, ce livre mène une réflexion approfondie sur les défis stratégiques, intellectuels et rhétoriques d’une situation vécue à l’époque comme un désordre international, en raison de la marge de manœuvre subversive acquise par des acteurs ordinairement faibles.

Parmi la luxuriance des corniches et moulures où s’enroulent des rubans ou s’épanouissent fleurs et feuillages, les planchettes glissées entre les solives ont reçu des peintures dont la variété thématique nous ouvre une nouvelle part de l’imaginaire de ces siècles. La rigueur du programme héraldique voisine avec un monde animal souvent fantastique, mais aussi domestique, familier, ou exotique. Ici et là, des saynètes montrent des personnages humains, au jeu, en fête, au travail (fort peu), ou au combat. Ici, la veine est raffinée, là, d’une truculence comique. Cet ouvrage parcourt, pour la première fois, toutes les régions méditerranéennes qui ont participé de ce goût pour les charpentes peintes, trace la chronologie de leur histoire, observe les traits communs de leur inspiration et fait ressortir les nuances : la Renaissance et l’Antique s’expriment en même temps que la drôlerie des fabliaux.

    Description: Jacques-Nicolas Billaud-Varenne (1756-1819) demeure un méconnu de l’historiographie révolutionnaire. En rééditant les Principes régénérateurs du systême social, opuscule publié en pluviôse an III (janvier-février 1795), peu de temps avant la déportation de l’auteur à Cayenne, on souhaite ici éclairer un moment essentiel dans l’élaboration de la « synthèse républicaine ». C’est aussi « une nouvelle manière d’écrire l’histoire de la Révolution française » (Michel Vovelle). Un retour critique au texte met en lumière, d’une part, l’acculturation d’un révolutionnaire de premier plan, d’autre part, les thèmes récurrents du discours jacobin. L’essai de Billaud-Varenne est, en effet, une expression du projet montagnard d’« institutions civiles ». Projet d’un lien social pour « mettre en action la morale » et « la donner pour base à la politique », espérance d’un nouvel espace public de réciprocité fraternelle où la citoyenneté compte au rang des droits naturels. Ainsi se dévoile une philosophie de la Révolution française qui n’est pas sans rapport avec la pensée allemande contemporaine de l’événement révolutionnaire.

Lors de la création de l’Unesco quelques Américains ont énormément travaillé pour que cette Institution spécialisée des Nations- Unis existe. Leur rôle et leur apport sont ici soigneusement mis en évidence. Or, les premières déceptions arrivent rapidement car, à tort, du côté de Washington, on espérait voir l’Organisation participer efficacement à la lutte contre le communisme. Néanmoins, à la fin des années 1950, l’Unesco connaît un regain de faveur auprès du gouvernement américain. Et si l’hégémonie financière américaine à l’Unesco n’a jamais fait de doute, sa domination politique est mise en cause dès les premières années. Les États-Unis vont quitter l’Unesco en 1984, quand la première génération d’Américains, fondateurs de l’Unesco et fidèles malgré les déceptions a, depuis longtemps, quitté la scène politique.     Description: « Zone tribale du Nord-Yémen », « zone tribale de l’Ouest pakistanais », voilà bien des expressions qui reviennent dans l’actualité pour désigner des régions de confins farouchement réfractaires à l’imposition d’un nouvel ordre politique. Dès la fin du XIXe et au début du XXe siècle, les États européens, emportés dans leur mouvement d’expansion outre-mer, vinrent buter, en périphérie, sur ce type d’espace en quelque sorte interstitiel des relations internationales contemporaines. Dans ces zones où les agents traditionnels de la vie diplomatique pénétraient peu, ou mal, une expertise particulière, celle du renseignement et des agences de sécurité, parut s’imposer. Lorsque la France coloniale s’implante en Syrie et au Liban, au lendemain de la Première Guerre mondiale, elle doit précisément faire face à ce type de résistance, où se combinent turbulences tribales, désordres sociaux et effervescence identitaire. La lutte qui s’engage alors entre bandes armées locales d’une part, et Service des Renseignements de l’armée française de l’autre, dépasse, et de loin, le face-à-face purement martial, mais renvoie à un choc des violences, sociale et guerrière d’un côté, étatique et militaire de l’autre, dont il n’est pas sûr que la leçon ne vaille qu’au passé.

    Description: L’inceste marque de sa monstruosité les consciences collectives. Cantonné dans la sphère du tabou et de l’infamie, nul ne peut le discuter, nul ne peut le pratiquer. Le phénomène existe pourtant sous différentes formes selon les sociétés dans lesquelles il est rencontré et pensé. En France, au xixe siècle, l’inceste a une histoire. Lorsqu’en 1791 les Constituants décident de le décriminaliser, la société française voit s’ouvrir un siècle de débats qui conduit à une requalification profonde du phénomène et de son imaginaire. L’étude croisée des discours entretenus par les élites souligne les étapes qui ont présidé à la construction de l’inceste criminel. À la fin du siècle, il n’est plus l’apanage des aristocrates décriés par les Lumières mais bien celui d’hommes pauvres, devenus les symboles d’une nouvelle dangerosité. La justice, par l’entrelacement de ses échelles et de ses acteurs, contribue également à fabriquer et à imposer progressivement ce masque sur le phénomène incestueux. Mais l’inceste n’est pas qu’un crime au xixe siècle. En tentant de pénétrer au cœur même des familles, cet ouvrage montre qu’il peut également être une sexualité consentie qui se pratique dans la clandestinité de certains foyers français. Réalité multiforme, interdit plus que tabou, l’inceste mérite en ce sens d’être replacé dans une histoire plus courte que l’intemporalité des anthropologues.

L’administration a acquis un pouvoir sans précédent en répondant à la demande des entreprises afin de leur fournir une information détaillée sur les marchés extérieurs et leur apporter son appui dans leurs opérations d’exportation. Fondé sur la lecture d’archives inédites et de nombreux témoignages de diplomates et hauts fonctionnaires, cet ouvrage démêle l’écheveau complexe du dispositif français et présente la genèse, dans les années 1960, de la politique des grands contrats dans le domaine des exportations civiles. À l’orée du XXIe siècle, le système hérité de la Libération est, dans une large mesure, démantelé. Il a néanmoins permis à la France d’accomplir une conversion majeure dans la conduite de ses relations extérieures et de mettre en place sur de nombreux marchés extra-européens une politique d’influence fondée sur une image économique rénovée.

Plusieurs réunions ont permis de définir une problématique commune. Enfin, les différents tex te sont été discutés à l’occasion d’un colloque international financé par la Commission européenne.     Description: Pour René Girault, « être historien des relations internationales », ce n’est pas seulement faire de l’histoire des relations inter- nationales ou développer des recherches dans ce domaine, c’est aussi se poser des questions d’historien ; c’est réfléchir sans cesse sur la validité de ce qui constitue sa propre discipline. Parce que cette préoccupation marque constamment et fructueusement son œuvre, René Girault s’inscrit dans la prestigieuse lignée de Pierre Renouvin et de Jean-Baptiste Duroselle. Ses nombreux disciples ont voulu lui rendre hommage en rassemblant certains de ses textes et en sélectionnant précisément ceux qui rendent le mieux compte de sa réflexion historique. A n’en point douter, il existe une « méthode Girault », une méthode qui, prolongeant et renouvelant celle de Pierre Renouvin, tend à écrire une histoire globale des relations internationales, avec un horizon bien plus large que celui de l’histoire diplomatique traditionnelle. En analysant scrupuleusement les liens entre l’économique et le poli- tique, en mesurant le poids des représentations et des imaginaires sociaux, en démontant les mécanismes de décision, René Girault donne des éclairages très originaux sur des questions fondamentales : 1’« impérialisme », la « puissance », la place de la France dans le monde, la construction de l’Europe et l’identité européenne. Grand historien, René Girault est aussi un intellectuel en son siècle, pour qui toute réflexion sur l’histoire est aussi une réflexion sur la démocratie.

    Description: Ce livre s’inscrit clans la série des recherches suscitées par l’enquête sur le personnel parlementaire de la Troisième République, entreprise par l’URA 1016 du CNRS, au sein du Centre d’histoire du xixe siècle qui asso­cie les Universités de Paris I et de Paris IV. Cet ouvrage porte sur une catégorie de sénateurs aujourd’hui oubliée : les inamovibles, nommés d’abord par l’Assemblée nationale, puis par le Sénat, conformément à la loi constitutionnelle du 24 février 1875. Jusqu’à la révision constitutionnelle de 1884, qui mit fin à ce mode de désignation, il y eut cent seize sénateurs inamovibles. Les diverses contributions réunies dans la première partie apportent des éléments de réflexion sur les origines sociales et la formation, les alliances et réseaux familiaux, les attitudes philosophiques et spirituelles, les liens avec le monde militaire, le barreau, le monde académique. Il fallait évo­quer leur enracinement provincial, leur place dans les conseils du gouver­nement, leur comportement politique grâce à quelques scrutins qui per­mettent au reste de décrire tendances et groupes dans le Sénat des débuts de la République. Enfin, les obsèques des sénateurs inamovibles et la mémoire qui les accompagne constituent comme le tombeau de ces « immortels » de la République. Les profils biographiques présentés ensuite trouveront sûrement l’attention de tous ceux qui s’intéressent aux élites socio-politiques de la France contemporaine. On découvre nombre de personnalités dont les débuts, non seulement professionnels mais politiques, datent de la monar­chie de Juillet, voire de la fin de la Restauration. Certaines de leurs exis­tences. et pas seulement celles des officiers de l’armée de terre ou de marine, sont marquées au coin du romanesque. Elles font revivre, comme en un éclair, l’histoire mouvementée de la France du xixe siècle, jalonnée par les révolutions, les changements de régime, les choix difficiles entre fidélité et ralliement. Ce livre éclaire une institution rarement étudiée et un personnel mal connu, qui doit tant à la France des notables, une France de propriétaires et de juristes, attachée au libéralisme.

Cet ouvrage entend saisir les dynamiques historiques de ce contrôle en Europe et aux États-Unis, par une analyse des acteurs, des pratiques et des lieux où il s’exerce de New York à Naples, d’Anvers à Marseille. Cette régulation des trafics présente des configurations différentes selon les modes de transport (voiture à cheval ou automobile, chemin de fer, navigation à voile ou à vapeur), les échelles d’observation et les types de mobilités. Résolument inscrite dans les évolutions récentes de ce champ de recherche, la démarche est ici empirique, attentive à la façon dont les institutions évoluent sans cesse à travers leur action. Exploitant de nombreuses archives, cet ouvrage recourt aux outils de l’histoire intellectuelle et transnationale pour proposer une autre lecture d’un phénomène trop souvent encore réduit à ses manifestations les plus contemporaines et les plus anglo-saxonnes, alors qu’il plonge ses racines dans la crise des années 1930 et prend forme en Suisse au lendemain immédiat de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Loin de l’érudition et de l’anecdote, par-delà le souci de redonner son importance à une figure étonnamment délaissée par les chercheurs, la biographie est ici une démarche de contextualisation visant à expliquer le succès d’un intellectuel autant sociologue qu’économiste. Incontournable en Suisse et en Allemagne, très lié aux nouveaux conservateurs américains, pourfendeur du « collectivisme » sous toutes ses formes, préoccupé du sort de l’Amérique latine et de l’Afrique, publiant dans toutes les langues, Wilhelm Röpke a incarné la variante néolibérale de l’intellectuel engagé. Au-delà de la dénonciation du keynésianisme, de l’interventionnisme et de l’Etat providence, ses écrits et ses réseaux permettent de cerner le néolibéralisme comme un regard global sur le monde, comme une philosophie politique et sociale ambivalente dans son rapporté la modernité, comme une mobilisation de combat et d’influence à l’échelle occidentale. L’écho rencontré par Wilhelm Röpke illustre la renaissance des idées libérales et conservatrices dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle et le rôle majeur joué dans leur fermentation et leur diffusion par les intellectuels émigrés d’origine germanique.

    Description: Pendant longtemps, on a pensé que les hommes d’affaires catholiques, contrairement aux protestants dont on estimait qu’ils étaient plus capables, ne songeaient qu’à quitter les activités marchandes en essayant de s’anoblir. On considérait qu’il s’agissait d’une "trahison" de la bourgeoisie. Or ceci, depuis quelque temps, a été remis en cause. Nombreux ont été les catholiques, Français ou étrangers, qui n’ont pas abandonné le monde des affaires dont leur maîtrise était indiscutable. L’étude de la dynastie Le Couteulx, qui après avoir été attirée par le protestantisme est revenue au catholicisme dans les années qui suivent l’Édit de Nantes, en est une preuve supplémentaire. Après être devenus marchands-drapiers à Rouen dans les premières décennies du xvie siècle, les Le Couteulx fondèrent une banque privée à Paris dans les années 1670, qui fut considérée par Boisguilbert, au début du xviiie siècle, comme « la banque la plus fameuse de France » et le demeura jusqu’au début de la Révolution, tandis qu’un membre de la dynastie fut un des fondateurs de la Banque de France.

It is concerned with how lingering peace processes affect, in the long-term, patterns of othering in protracted conflicts, and how this relates with enduring violence. Taking Israel and Palestine as a case study, the book traces different representations of success and failure of the protracted peace process, as well as its associated policies, narratives, norms and practices, to analyze its impact on identity and its contribution to the maintenance and/or transformation of the cultural component of violence. On the one hand, drawing from an interdisciplinary approach comprising International Relations (IR), History and Social Psychology, this book proposes an analytical framework for assessing the specificities of the construction of identities in protracted conflicts. It identifies dehumanization and practices of reconciliation in ongoing conflicts – what is called peace-less reconciliation – as the main elements influencing processes of othering and violence in this kind of conflicts. On the other hand, the book offers an empirical historical analysis on how the protracted peace process has impacted identity building and representations made of the ‘other’ in the case of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since the end of the 19th century to the present day.

    Description: On connaît bien le commissaire de police du xxe siècle, devenu une figure familière grâce à la fiction, dans la littérature d’abord, au cinéma et à la télévision ensuite. On connaît beaucoup moins bien son devancier du xixe siècle, mal vu par ses contemporains et négligé par les historiens. Il ne correspond pourtant que peu à l’image du froid bureaucrate à laquelle on l’a souvent réduit. Si, contrairement à l’inspecteur ou au « limier » de la Sûreté, il n’a alors guère sollicité l’imaginaire, ce fonctionnaire moderne a constitué à partir de la célèbre loi de février 1800 (28 pluviôse an VIII) un rouage essentiel de la construction de l’État. Au contact de citadins de plus en plus nombreux, il a été un agent décisif de l’acculturation à la norme et à l’autorité, gérant au jour le jour les transgressions ordinaires, contribuant à l’édification d’un ordre quotidien. Homme de l’entre-deux — entre pouvoir central et pouvoir local, entre État et société, élites sociales et petit peuple urbain, politisation et professionnalisation —, il résume et accompagne bien des contradictions du siècle. Cet ouvrage collectif, dirigé par Dominique Kalifa (Paris 1) et Pierre Karila-Cohen (Rennes 2), est le premier livre entièrement consacré à ce personnage méconnu qu’il étudie en un long xixe siècle, de la Révolution à la Grande Guerre. Aussi attentif aux origines sociales des commissaires qu’à leurs itinéraires, à leurs pratiques professionnelles ou à leurs conditions de vie, il offre aussi une ample sélection de documents, pour partie inédits, qui témoignent de l’activité quotidienne de ces policiers, appelés à devenir une des figures majeures de notre contemporain.

    Description: Le 7 juin 1494, sous les auspices du pape Alexandre VI, était signé entre le Portugal et la Castille le traité de Tordesillas qui donnait l’exemple d’un partage géographique d’espaces à coloniser. Mais l’idée d’un partage officiel ne trouvait-elle pas son origine dans le conflit entre deux puissances aux fortes affinités méditerranéennes, dans les partages de facto de la mer intérieure en zones d’influence, à la suite des longues guerres coloniales ayant opposé Gênes à Venise aux derniers siècles du Moyen Âge ? En choisissant le thème du partage du monde, c’est en fait toute l’expansion occidentale dans sa diversité qui est ici examinée, sans négliger ses premières formes que furent les croisades. Les motivations de l’expansion occidentale, les projets de colonisation, les flux migratoires auxquels ceux-ci ont donné naissance, le choc en retour sur la politique, l’économie et la société des républiques conquérantes, autant de questions ici posées pour éclairer les « précédents médiévaux » de la colonisation moderne.
