    Description: In this introduction to the Outstanding contributions to logic volume devoted to Nuel Belnap’s work on indeterminism and free action, we provide a brief overview of some of the formal frameworks and methods involved in Belnap’s work on these topics: theories of branching histories, specifically “branching time” and “branching space-times”, the stit (“seeing to it that”) logic of agency, and case-intensional first order logic. We also draw some connections to the contributions included in this volume. Abstracts of these contributions are included as an appendix. Nuel Belnap’s work in logic and in philosophy spans a period of over half a century. During this time, he has followed a number of different research lines, most of them over a period of many years or decades, and often in close collaboration with other researchers:1 relevance logic, a long term project starting from a collaboration with Alan Anderson dating back to the late 1950s and continued with Robert Meyer and Michael Dunn into the 1990s; the logic of questions, developed with Thomas Steel in the 1960s and 1970s; display logic in the 1980s and 1990s; the revision theory of truth, with Anil Gupta, in the 1990s; and a long-term, continuing interest in indeterminism and free action. This book is devoted to Belnap’s work on the latter two topics. In this introduction, we provide a brief overview of some of the formal frameworks and methods involved in thatwork, and we drawsome connections to the contributions included in this volume. Abstracts of these contributions are presented in Appendix A.

    Description: On-surface synthesis is appearing as an extremely promising strategy to create organic nanoarchitectures with atomic precision. Molecular building blocks holding adequate functional groups are dosed onto surfaces that support or even drive their covalent linkage.     Description: This open access book provides a multifold exploration of how people in early modern Europe understood, conducted, and actively used private conversations. From sharing personal matters to discussing delicate secrets, all layers of early modern society had their motives for wanting to keep certain exchanges out of public eyes and ears, and ways of trying to achieve this. Detecting such instances in historical sources typically becomes a complex pursuit, full of subtle references that require creative approaches, especially when it comes to more informal practices. Yet, in a reading against the grain, different sources can offer us hints of how conversations took place in private. The book consists of a historiographical and methodological introduction to the study of private conversations, followed by ten case studies from a variety of cities, villages, and countryside across early modern Europe. The concluding epilogue suggests some pathways to further explore the terrain of how people have talked in private in past societies.

    Description: This chapter explores the transmission of tales of the supernatural during the very long eighteenth century (between c.1660 and c.1832). A genre of publications on this subject which have not been studied are those anthologies of supposedly true stories, usually relating to named people and places and sometimes dated, often each numbered separately, with relatively little discussion of their authenticity or significance, beyond perhaps a brief preface defending the reality of the world of spirits. A series of entrepreneurial publishers, mostly operating from Paternoster Row in London, experimented with anthologising these stories in varied combinations. Any attempt to analyse the stories must begin by unravelling the publishing history by which they were transmitted and (not fully studied here) modified and retold, as well as re-interpreted.
