Beschreibung: This book is a reflection on the Jewish presence in two European capitals, Warsaw and Berlin, in the first half of the 20th century. It was inspired by the works of Polish-Jewish, Yiddish and German-Jewish authors, as well as by the connections between urban spaces and the formation of different varieties of modern Jewish identity. The spotlight is cast on images preserved in literary works, namely those concerning separate Jewish neighborhoods and the sphere of cultural interethnic contacts. By attempting to restore the presence of Jewish inhabitants of both cities, destroyed by the Holocaust, it may become possible to see how the imagined communities of the time were created and preserved in the texts, even if, in reality, the metropolises were transformed into necropolises.

Beschreibung: Across more than two centuries Afro-America has created a huge and dazzling variety of literary self-expression. Designs of Blackness provides less a narrative literary history than, precisely, a series of mappings—each literary-critical and comparative while at the same time offering cultural and historical context. This carefully re-edited version of the 1998 publication opens with an estimation of earliest African American voice in the names of Phillis Wheatley and her contemporaries. It then takes up the huge span of autobiography from Frederick Douglass through to Maya Angelou. "Harlem on My Mind," which follows, sets out the literary contours of America’s premier black city. Womanism, Alice Walker’s presiding term, is given full due in an analysis of fiction from Harriet E. Wilson to Toni Morrison. Richard Wright is approached not as some regulation "realist" but as a more inward, at times near-surreal, author. Decadology has its risks but the 1940s has rarely been approached as a unique era of war and peace and especially in African American texts. Beat Generation work usually adheres to Ginsberg and Kerouac, but black Beat writing invites its own chapter in the names of Amiri Baraka, Ted Joans and Bob Kaufman. The 1960s has long become a mythic change-decade, and in few greater respects than as a black theatre both of the stage and politics. In Leon Forrest African America had a figure of the postmodern turn: his work is explored in its own right and for how it takes its place in the context of other reflexive black fiction. "African American Fictions of Passing" unpacks the whole deceptive trope of "race" in writing from Williams Wells Brown through to Charles Johnson. The two newly added chapters pursue African American literary achievement into the Obama-Trump century, fiction from Octavia Butler to Darryl Pinkney, poetry from Rita Dove to Kevin Young.

Beschreibung: The topic of this book is practical knowledge in early modern Europe, interpreted widely as recipes containing art procedures or medical panaceas between 1400 and 1700. In this book, the 1) origin or creation, 2) transmission or dissemination, and 3) use or consumption are key subjects for understanding the place of practical knowledge in early modern European society. After a historiographical and theoretical approach, this book applies Deleuze and Guattari’s rhizome metaphor to art technological literature. The first part ends with a study about medical practitioners and mediators who disseminate practical knowledge through the printing press. The second part of the book is entirely dedicated to the bookletA Very Proper Treatise (1573), using a microhistory approach to study it.

Beschreibung: What form did the portrayal of business owners, entrepreneurs, peasants, craftspeople and similar ‘protagonists of production’ take before it became the subject of negative assessments in the epoch of industrialization? Focusing on the European Enlightenment movement with a special emphasis on Spain, this volume sheds light on how both male and female figures working in production are represented by novels, plays, economic tracts and in the press. Literary scholars, historians, and economists analyse how those portrayals are related to the history of economic thought, 18th-century economic discourse, and enlightened Political Economy. With an epilogue by Deirdre McCloskey.

Beschreibung: Before Daybreak, the first important drama of German naturalism, was also the first play of Gerhart Hauptmann, the most significant naturalist of the theater. This translation by Peter Bauland (originally published in 1978) is the first colloquially convincing English version that captures the several levels of diction in this seminal modern drama. It is preceded by a critical introduction by the translator which places the play in historical context and discusses its form and content.

Beschreibung: Ellis's book confronts directly the most central issue of Kleist criticism: the essential nature and meaning of his work. Rather than provide a general survey of Kleist's writings, Ellis performs an analysis of six of his most mature works: "Der Findling", "Die Marquise von O. . .", "Das Erdbeben in Chili", "Der Zweitkampf", "Michael Kohlhaas", and "Prinz Friedrich von Homburg". Ellis draws some general conclusions about the uniquely Kleistian character of these six works which are at sharp variance with previous Kleist criticism.

Beschreibung: In this study the author challenges previous scholarship which characterizes the work of Austrian dramatist Franz Grillparzer (1791-1872) as eminently personal and the perception of his male characters as lacking in masculinity. By analyzing male characters in thirteen of Grillparzer's plays as well as the dramatist's comments on his work, Coenen argues that the diversity represented by Grillparzer's male characters paints a much more complete and nuanced vision of the human soul than previously recognized.

Beschreibung: Jill Kowalik reevaluates J. J. Breitinger's "Critische Dichtkunst" (1740) with regard to a heretofore neglected aspect of aesthetics in the early eighteenth century, namely how poesis and historiography could increasingly come to resemble each other in their assumptions, purposes, and methods of representation. The central argument states that historians of this period began to utilize the concept of historical perspectivism only after its development as an interpretive tool by the aesthetic thinkers of the early Enlightenment. The "Critische Dichtkunst" is examined in terms of three disparate traditions: the modern reception of Aristotle's "Poetics", Horace's "Ars poetica", and the Quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns the model of consciousness proposed by Leibniz that describes the mind as a ceaseless process of historical intellective integration and the German reception of French neoclassical authors, especially Dubos, whose notion of historical probability was radicalized by Breitinger and later appropriated by poets and historians alike.

Beschreibung: This study is an unorthodox approach to the origin, historicity, and authorship of the anonymous Icelandic sagas. Following the publication of her translation of the "Laxdœla Saga", in this volume Madelung uses her deep knowledge of the text to demonstrate the literary quality and aesthetic structure of the work, especially the function of repetition. She shows that the Saga contains a historical-political analogy between the period in which the story is set (the eleventh century) and the saga-author’s own time two centuries later. The apparently straightforward prose is camouflage, and the symbolism provides the key to the hidden analogy.

Beschreibung: This volume is a study in the Romantic reshaping of space and time to evoke the fantastic interior landscape and the temporal dynamics of subjective experience. Close textual analysis is coupled with frequent reference to literary and intellectual history in the reassessment of the narrative art of Novalis and Tieck. The author examines Novalis' "Hyazinth und Rosenblüte", "Atlantis", "Arion" and "Eros und Fabel" as well as Tieck's "Der blonde Eckbert" and "Der Runenberg". A concluding chapter examines spatio-temporal patterns in the Romantic fairy tale at large.

Beschreibung: This study presents interpretation and criticism of Catharina von Greiffenberg's "Geistliche Sonnette" (1662) with contrastive discussions of the process and structure of Gryphius' sonnets. The author uses an eclectic method to explore the sonnets as viable poetic constructs. She arrives at new conclusions on the nature of the two poets' gifts and on the peculiarities and possibilities of the sonnet as a short lyric form.

Following an introduction to the young German problem, with special reference to Wienbarg, there are essays on Gutzkow, Mundt, Kühne, and, as a contrast, the major novels of Immermann. The essays attempt to enhance the understanding of the post-Romantic crisis in German literature.

Beschreibung: The poetry of Wilhelm Müller, to whom Heine expressed indebtedness for his renewal of the forms of the German "Volkslied", had rarely been discussed in depth prior to this volume originally published in 1970. Cottrell's study is an interpretation of Müller's three most successful song-cycles: "Die schöne Müllerin", "Die Winterreise", and "Frühlingskranz". The first two, interpreted in chapters one and two, are famed through Schubert's musical settings. Chapter three offers an interpretation of the "Frühlingskranz". A last chapter considers Müller's poetic imagination. Full texts of the poems discussed are included in the Appendix and are indexed by titles and first lines.

Beschreibung: Far from being a forerunner of Weimar Classicism or an addendum to the Enlightenment, the Sturm und Drang is best seen as part of an autonomous culture of impatience—as literature in which Germans, frustrated with their fragmented land, simulated a sense of power and effectiveness that political realities did not afford. This impatience drove not only authors and the characters they created; it also drew in German audiences and readers ready to partake vicariously in national sentiments that they otherwise could not have experienced. Alan Leidner sees Lavater's work as a model for dealing with a limiting culture, Goethe's Werther as a subtly arrogant figure, the drama of the "Kraftmensch" as a literature legitimizing the violence of its protagonists, the famous split in the "Urfaust" as the result of Goethe's resistance to the impatience that led many writers to fabricate a German nation that did not exist, and Schiller's "Die Räuber" as a liberating ritual that allowed German audiences to enjoy temporary feelings of national community. He concludes his study with an analysis of J. M. R. Lenz, whose texts recoil unequivocally in the face of the impatient muse.

Beschreibung: This study reassesses the poetry of Paul Fleming (1609–1640) in the context of its own literary, historical, and social background. The four chapters focus initially on generic and historical context. The study of selected texts leads to more general considerations of the sources and significance of certain major themes. A number of poems by Fleming and poets contemporary with him uncovered in the twentieth century are evaluated here for the first time. The result is a substantially revised view of Fleming's poetic development. Fleming is shown to have been a more complex and wide-ranging poet than was conventionally thought, one whose debt to Renaissance literary traditions has been underestimated.

Beschreibung: This work is a structural analysis of Böll's short satirical prose, which is generally acclaimed as his most successful fiction. The author shows how Böll shifted the form and structure of his satirical writing over time in response to changing political and social conditions, focusing on Böll's changing conception of satire from the early 1950s to the 1970s, his use of satirical conventions, and his personal, unmistakable signature as a satirist. The investigation is rounded out by synoptic chapters on the proto-satirical texts of the late forties, on the lines of separation between satirical and parabolic texts, and on the longer satirical narratives.

Beschreibung: Otto Ludwig, nineteenth-century German novelist and critic, originated the term "poetic realism". In this excellent study, Ludwig's prose is sympathetically and thoroughly examined and a clear account of the evolution of German fiction after Romanticism is presented. Taking Ludwig's narrative works together with his literary criticism, McClain shows how the author attempted to blend the real and the ideal to reach the goal of poetic realism as he envisioned it.

Beschreibung: Bernd's study shows how Storm's "Novellen" are made purposeful by the operations of a fictional intelligence, haunted by the fear of passing time. The author challenges the traditional belief that Storm's narratives are products of a sentimental mind. No other discussion of Storm's tales, be it analysis of an individual narrative or collective treatment of several or all of them, seeks to interpret them with such specific emphasis upon their fictional, omniscient narrator. This concentration on the fictional narrator also leads into a study of Storm's subjective narrative form.

Beschreibung: Nobel laureate Elias Canetti wrote his novel "Auto-da-Fé" ("Die Blendung") when he and the twentieth century were still quite young. Rooted in the cultural crises of the Weimar period, "Auto-da-Fé" first received critical acclaim abroad—in England, France, and the United States—where it continues to fascinate readers of subsequent generations. "The End of Modernism" places this work in its cultural and philosophical contexts, situating the novel not only in relation to Canetti's considerable body of social thought, but also within larger debates on Freud and Freudianism, misogyny and modernism's "fragmented subject," anti-Semitism and the failure of humanism, contemporary philosophy and philosophical fads, and traditionalist notions of literature and escapist conceptions of history. "The End of Modernism" portrays "Auto-da-Fé" as an exemplum of "analytic modernism," and in this sense a crucial endpoint in the progression of postwar conceptions of literary modernism.

Beschreibung: German Poetic Realists drew on the Romantic motif of the Double in a manner consistent with the central dictum of Poetic Realism as articulated by its chief theorists, Julian Schmidt and Otto Ludwig. Schmidt and Ludwig argued that contemporary authors should, above all, strive for psychological and aesthetic totality in their narrative representations, turning away from the Romantic fantastic but also avoiding the fragmentary approach to the portrayal of everyday life that Ludwig found in early Naturalism. The 'poetic' presentation of reality adheres to quotidian life but strives to show it in all its many dimensions. While Romantic Doppelgänger are often preternatural figures, the Poetic Realists configure egos and their narrative Others ('alter egos,' who are also sometimes physical Doubles) to portray characters in their psychological comprehensiveness. After offering an overview of the Romantic Double motif and its connections to the theory of Poetic Realism, John Pizer analyzes the work of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, Otto Ludwig, Conrad Ferdinand Meyer, Gottfried Keller, Theodor Storm, and Wilhelm Raabe.

Beschreibung: Translation Studies has been in action in the Polish humanities since 1930s. The book gathers the most important contributions from Polish translation scholars working in the context of Literary and Cultural Studies as well as Linguistics. The essays offer insights into the conceptualisation of translation, stylistics and poetics, history and anthropology of translation. Most of them are made available in English for the first time. The editors’ introduction provides a panoramic backdrop for concepts, methodologies and applications. As part of the tendency to enlarge Translation Studies and include new contexts into its mainstream, this reader gives an overview of a rich area of translation scholarship from the centre of Europe, a crossroads of influences and traditions.

Although both arguments are formulated in terms of Abbé Dubos' theory of signs, Lessing significantly modifies Dubos' doctrine by ideas derived from Alexander Baumgarten, Moses Mendelssohn, and Edmund Burke. An analysis of these modifications provides the framework for a critique of Lessing's aesthetic philosophy as a whole.

Beschreibung: In this closely argued and admirably lucid study of the late medieval didactic epic "Der Ring", Christa Wolf Cross analyzes the dynamics of the narrator-reader relationship. Wittenweiler's narrator presents himself at times as the omniscient and methodical teller of his tale, an authoritative teacher in command both of his material and his audience, and at other points as a playful master who feigns ignorance, appears to mock his own versifying, and challenges the reader to become vigilant to an extraordinary degree and to recognize that he must judge independently what to accept as Wittenweiler's teachings. Cross's investigation leads her to propound new answers to a number of questions that have long perplexed Wittenweiler scholars. While she has much to say to other specialists, her study addresses itself not to them alone but to a larger audience of students of medieval literature as well.

However, it is rarely noted that their contemporary understanding has been shaped by the works of Jacques Derrida, who has employed all these concepts since the mid-1960s. The aim of this book is to present the lesser discussed topics of Derrida’s thought – not only as the creator of a specific mode of interpretation called "deconstruction" but also as an initiator of recent ethical and political reflection, a pioneer of performatics, and a precursor of current research on experience. At the same time, the book provides a panorama of the most important changes in the humanities of the last thirty years, and in particular – the ethical, performative, and empirical turns.

Told with tragic insight, yet sympathetically, the epic may well be described as the story of man, the victim of himself. Mueller analyzes the work in three chapters, focused on substance, essence and significance, in order to make the epic poem relevant to a modern audience.

As all the phenomena presented are oriented toward fulfillment of their highest potential, the novel emerges as a powerful assertion of the intent to achieve classical form in all things despite the ever-present threat of dissolution and chaos. With such emphasis upon the achievement of perfection, "Der Nachsommer" itself becomes a masterly exemplification of Stifter's concept Gestalt with its full ethical connotations.

Beschreibung: Critical revised edition and translation by Jean Ward This book presents a universal theory of autobiography, defined as a "triangular" form of utterance involving three different stances. It is a personal testimony to experiences lived through, a confession of intimate inner experience and a challenge addressed to the reader to engage in dialogue, enter into an argument or join in a game. The stances of witness, confession and challenge are always present, though usually one of them overshadows the other two. Polish memoirs, diaries and letters, as well as novels of a clearly personal character, are interpreted here in the context of the most important autobiographical texts of European literature. In the background, also, the historical events which have powerfully stamped Polish culture in the last two centuries are discreetly shown.

Richardson argues that Kleist's success in France disproves the traditional idea that his work is "unexportable" and shows the conditions that led to his positive reception outside Germany.

This translation by Peter Bauland (originally published in 1978) is the first colloquially convincing English version that captures the several levels of diction in this seminal modern drama. It is preceded by a critical introduction by the translator which places the play in historical context and discusses its form and content.

Beschreibung: Examining the relationship between German poetry, philosophy, and visual media around 1900, Carsten Strathausen argues that the poetic works of Rainer Maria Rilke, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, and Stefan George focused on the visible gestalt of language as a means of competing aesthetically with the increasing popularity and "reality effect" of photography and film. Poetry around 1900 self-reflectively celebrated its own words as both transparent signs and material objects, Strathausen says. In Aestheticism, this means that language harbors the potential to literally present the things it signifies. Rather than simply describing or picturing the physical experience of looking, as critics have commonly maintained, modernist poetry claims to enable a more profound kind of perception that grants intuitive insights into the very texture of the natural world.

Beschreibung: This is the first comprehensive study of the dramas of Nicodemus Frischlin (1547–1590), one of the most versatile and complex playwrights of early modern Germany. Frischlin’s broad range encompassed biblical, confessional, and historical drama, all of which expressed bold social and political criticism. His plays were influential, frequently printed and translated, and often controversial. He ended his short life trying to escape prison, where he was being held for threatening further political publications. Price analyzes Frischlin’s dramatic output, as well as humanist literary theory, in particular Renaissance approaches to rhetoric and imitation, to explain how humanists modified or even subverted classical forms to accommodate political and theological activism.

Beschreibung: This survey of the literary treatment of musicians in German novels and novellas begins with the Romantics and ends with the publication of Thomas Mann's "Doktor Faustus". Schoolfield explores the work of a large selection of writers, including Hoffmann, Tieck, Kleist, Brentano, Grillparzer, Werfel and Hesse among many others. Through these works he tracks the progression of the figure of the musician as professional, artist, genius, composer, and pedagogue and how the pursuit of their art is interpreted by major literary movements.

Beschreibung: Every handbook of medieval German literature has stressed the importance of love's ennobling power as a motif in the Minnesang, yet prior to this volume no study had attempted to assess its significance on the basis of its actual occurrence. In this volume Stephen Kaplowitt scrutinizes the entire lyric production of Minnesänger from Der von Kürenberg to Walther von der Vogelweide, identifying and analyzing every example of the motif. He concludes that, although the motif is widespread, its significance has been considerably exaggerated.

Beschreibung: Peter Erspamer explores the 'Jewish question' in German literature from Lessing's "Nathan der Weise" in 1779 to Sessa's "Unser Verkehr" in 1815. He analyzes the transition from an enlightened emancipatory literature advocating tolerance in the late eighteenth century to an anti-Semitic literature with nationalistic overtones in the early nineteenth century. Erspamer examines "Nathan" in light of Lessing's attempts to distance himself from the excesses of his own Christian in-group through pariah identification, using an idealized member of an out-group religion as a vehicle to attack the dominant religion. He also focuses on other leading advocates of tolerance and explores changes in Jewish identity, particularly the division of German Jewry into orthodox Jews, adherents of the Haskalah, and converted Jews.

Beschreibung: Though not a survey of Bertolt Brecht's poetry, this book covers the major periods in his work and most of its major themes as well. Each of the seven chapters deals with a segment from Brecht's considerably poetic opus. A central characteristic of Brecht's poetry is its dual function, as self-revelation and self-concealment. This emerges most clearly in the poet's relationship to his reader for whom Brecht dons a variety of guises, plays a variety of roles, and speaks in a variety of voices. Thomson's methodology is pluralist, although he includes a discussion of how reader-response theory can be harnessed to the task of interpreting Brecht's poetry. Various means of interpretation and analysis are used, depending on which seems to yield the most information and insight. The only reading of Brecht's poetry categorically refused is the one that accepts it at face value as a record of Brecht's life experience. Despite outward appearances, Brecht is a devious writer, and nowhere more so than in his poetry, where he most immediately presents himself to his public.

Beschreibung: Using the nine novels of Christoph Martin Wieland (1733–1813) as case studies, Shookman explores the notion of fictionality both as a distinctive feature of the stories themselves and as a distinguishing characteristic of the fanciful notions, moral laws, political utopias, religious beliefs, and artistic concepts that they describe. The novels show readers why they should take fictions seriously, yet not literally—or how to suspend disbelief without suspending judgment. Shookman uses the concepts of imagination, ideals, and illusion to investigate how Wieland's novels define fiction, know its referents, and accept its truths. He places Wieland's use of fictionality in the evolution of the German novel, while also using his work to comment on academic and real world implications of fictionality.

Beschreibung: This book updates reader-response criticism as the foundation of aesthetic reading in the classroom by bringing it in line with cognitive theories in literary studies and linguistics. With the help of Gilles Fauconnier and Mark Turner‘s conceptual integration theory, which shares a surprising number of correspondences with Wolfgang Iser‘s The Act of Reading, it is possible to flesh out the latter‘s model of narrative meaning-making. In turn, this allows for a consistent reader-response approach to the medium of comics and auto/biography as one of its dominant genres. The fragmentation of comics narratives, but also of human lives and identities, requires such a theory that can explain how different perspectives and experiences can be blended into an experiential whole.

Beschreibung: This is a penetrative and perceptive comparison of two of the most discussed novels of the twentieth century. Beginning with Camus' own appraisal of Kafka's work, the study convincingly analyzes the authors' fictive creations. Rhein is particularly intrigued by the function of time in the two authors' works, as well as their use of irony and the existentialist themes evident in their characters' pursuits. Through this exploration of theme and narrative devices, the author reveals these works as a reflection of the intellectual climate of twentieth century Europe.

Beschreibung: Considered the earliest courtly romance in Germany, "Ruodlieb" is an invaluable document of eleventh century European society and a fascinating link in the development of the novel of chivalry. This edition by Edwin H. Zeydel (first published in 1959) with Latin text and the first English translation on facing pages is based upon painstaking study of the manuscripts, with many fragmentary lines completed and 450 corrections of Langosch's text. Zeydel's introduction to the history of the text and appendices with literary commentary and textual notes make this the first critical edition of "Ruodlieb" utilizing the manuscript to appear since Seiler's work in 1882.

Beschreibung: John Van Cleve analyzes the influence of the merchant class on what Leo Balet termed the 'Verburgerlichung' (the 'becoming middle-class') of German literature during the eighteenth century. He describes the origins and development of the class and examines its successive images in works by Haller, Schnabel, Borkenstein, Luise Gottsched, J. E. Schlegel, Gellert, and Lessing. Between the years 1729 and 1750, merchants were better able to lend financial support to the literary world than were civil servants and professionals. Although merchants were central in the cultural life of the German states, they were usually less educated than other members of their social stratum and therefore less disposed to literature. Tradition has cast the merchant class in a highly unflattering light as ethically indefensible. Van Cleve's in-depth analysis traces the evolution of attitudes toward merchants from negative, underdeveloped images to positive, heroic portrayals.

The introduction situates Hartmann's poem in the pantheon of Gregorius legends by writers from Sophocles to Mann.

Beschreibung: This book presents in comprehensive fashion the extraordinary development of "Ariadne auf Naxos" from its conception to the final operatic version. The unique collaboration of Hofmannsthal and Strauss is examined and the classical myths that served as a basis for the libretto are investigated. The detailed analysis and interpretation of both the text and the music demonstrate that this work is epochal in the history of early nineteenth-century opera and commands central importance in the overall production of its authors.

Beschreibung: This book represents an attempt to capture different links between modern literature and music. The author examines strict intertextual correlations, the phenomena of musicality and musicality of literary works, the musical structure in literature, so-called musical literary texts. He focuses on the novel Le Cœur absolu by Philippe Sollers, the poem Todesfuge by Paul Celan, the Preludio e Fughe by Umberto Saba and the drama Judasz z Kariothu [Judas Iscariot] by Karol Hubert Rostworowski. The analysis also includes Stanisław Barańczak’s cycle of poems Podróż zimowa: Wiersze do muzyki Franza Schuberta [Winter Journey: Poems to the Music of Franz Schubert] and a fragment of Scène from Hérodiade by StéphaneMallarmé in Paul Hindemith’s composition «Hérodiade» de Stéphane Mallarmé.

Beschreibung: This volume will be a great aid to students and scholars alike in American literature, American thought, the history of ideas, and comparative literature. Stavrou draws from the entire bodies of work by Whitman and Nietzsche to explore the parallels in the authors' conceptions of paradox, the totality of life, and solitude among other themes in this exploration of the underlying philosophical similarities of these two great writers of the nineteenth century.

Beschreibung: This book consists of close readings of four poems illustrating Gottfried Benn's developing conception of stillness or stasis: "Trunkene Flut" (1927), "Wer allein ist—" (1936), "Statische Gedichte" (1944), and "Reisen" (1950). Mark Roche pays particular attention to the interrelation of form and content, and he uncovers previously overlooked allusions to thinkers such as Aristotle, Seneca, and Meister Eckhart. Benn's supposedly pure poetry of stasis is in reality an expression of opposition to nazi ideology, Roche argues, and should be viewed in the context of inner emigration. Nevertheless, Benn's opposition to nazism unwittingly rests on the same decisionistic foundation as the power positivism he deplores. Benn's well-intentioned critique of nazism is ultimately unsuccessful. The book concludes with a theoretical postscript that suggest ways in which intellectual history could be made productive for literary interpretation and provides arguments in favor of an "aesthetic" analysis attentive to both formal structures and philosophical coherence.

Beschreibung: This study of German fiction about America in the nineteenth century concentrates in detail on three writers: Charles Sealsfield (Carl Postl, 1793–1864), an escaped Moravian monk who came to New Orleans in 1823 and wrote the first major German novels about the United States; Friedrich Gerstäcker (1816–1872), who, among his many experiences in America as a young man, lived as a backwoodsman in Arkansas and who later produced a large body of fiction, travel reportage, and emigration advice; and Karl May (1842–1912), who, though he knew nothing about America beyond what he could read in books, wrote famous adventure stories set in an imaginary West and became the best-selling writer in the German language. Sammons provides biographies of the authors and discusses how each differs in their mimetic and ideological approach. He pays particular attention to how the authors address issues of race, gender and politics in the United States. Sammons interweaves his discussion of these three writers with excurses into the emergence of the German Western and anti-Americanism in German fiction.
