    Description: Vulcano is one of the seven volcanic islands composing the Aeolian Islands archipelago (Southern Italy), which also includes three other active volcanoes. The island was orig-inally a stratovolcano like Stromboli; afterwards, its shape turned towards a complex structure composed of several volcanic landforms of different sizes. This is due to the great variability of the tectonic and volcanic phenomena, presently showing a volcano made by two calderas, a lava dome complex and two small active cones. The largest of them is the tuff cone of La Fossa, hosted in the middle of a 3- km-wide caldera struc-ture (La Fossa caldera), whose borders are visible on the southern and western sides of the island. Its last eruption occurred in 1888–1890. At present, Vulcano is charac-terized by weak shallow seismicity and intense fumarolic activity mainly concentrated within the crater of the La Fossa cone and along its rims during a recent unrest phase started in 2021, and measured with a multiparametric monitoring network.

    Description: n this work, a compact, portable, extended operating life, maintenance-free and remotely operable apparatus for optical absorbance measurements in the ultraviolet region is proposed. The system is useful for concentration measurement of chemical species or biological agents that exhibit ultraviolet light absorption. An apparatus prototype was developed using a commercial LED as photons source at the desired wavelength and a photo-detector with low noise, high sensitivity and visible blindness, opportunely fabricated using Silicon Carbide technology. A suitable electronic for handling the very low-level current of the detector has been designed and built to be robust, portable, low-power, low-cost and with a WiFi user interface. The ultraviolet spectroscopy apparatus application to which this work is aimed, is the low-level concentration measurement of SO 2 in volcanic environment, while it can be easily adapted to other molecules detection and higher concentration level. While in previous Authors’ work the system feasibility has been explored using laboratory instrumentation, in this work the focus is to design a system that can be used in real harsh volcanic environment, where system lightweight, endurance and chemical strength against aggressive compounds are paramount. Resolution of approximately 1 ppm, compactness, robustness and insensitivity to humidity and temperature variations are required for this kind of environment. The performed laboratory tests and calibration for SO 2 monitoring, are reported and discussed. The system shows good sensitivity as high as 8 pA/ppm, a resolution 〈 1 ppm for SO 2 detection and low cross-sensitivity to main components usually present in volcanic gases.

    Description: We present results obtained via an innovative spacebome SAR interferometry algorithm showing that the Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex, despite of its quiescent stage, is subject lo a particular deformation process. This is characterized by a rather continuous subsidence, revealed by ERS satellite data and levelling surveys, between 1992 and 2000. These deformations are mainly localized in two zones involving the Vesuvius cone and a narrow annular area that, although not fully continuously, extends around the base of the Somma edifice. We propose an interpretation of subsidence at both sites involving joint effects of gravitational sliding and extensional tectonic stress occurring at the contact between different lithological units. Some simple elastic models show how such localized subsidence can be generated. These results shed new light on the Vesuvius dynamics and, more generally, on the link between gravitational effects of volcano loading and seismic-deformative processes, which is a subject of intense scientific debate.

    Description: Methods for volcano monitoring that are based on analysis of geophysical data often rely on deterministic approaches without considering the complex and dynamic nature of volcanic systems. To detect subtle changes within seismic sequences associated with volcanic unrest, specialized workflows for data classification and analysis are required. Here, we present an inference framework based on Bayesian Deep Learning as a probabilistic proxy, which allows monitoring continuous changes in seismic activity at volcanoes. This architecture has been designed and trained to detect and to classify individual earthquake transients from continuous seismic data recorded in volcanic environments. We tested this new framework by analyzing seismic data associated with eruptions at Bezymianny Volcano (Russia) during 2007. Our results demonstrate efficient signal detection and classification accuracy, and effective detection of changes in the volcanic system in the hours preceding eruptive activity. This approach can be extended to other volcanoes and earthquake-prone areas, and demonstrates a new application of deep learning in the field of seismic monitoring.
