Notes: Abstract Three lines of reasoning are discussed which have been put forward by A. R. Jensen in support of the hypothesis of genetic racial differences in IQ. These are the probabilistic connection of heritability to between-group genetic differences, the theoretical or formal relationship of within-group heritability to between-group heritability, and the regression of the IQ scores of blacks and whites to different population means. The first is shown to be a purely empirical claim that has no value as evidence in the absence of substantial confirming data, which are not available. The second and third are shown to be purely formal implications of the statistical models used to describe between-group heritability and linear regression, with no implications for the validity of the hypothesis. The attempted use of all three to support the hypothesis of genetic racial differences in IQ is discussed as an example of the fallacious reification of abstract methodology.

Notes: Abstract Possible causes of the heterogeneity of parent-offspring and sibling IQ correlations based on a review of the world literature were investigated. A meta-analysis of the parent-offspring data indicated that sample differences in the size of the IQ correlations were due to sampling error, test unreliability, and differences in the distribution of IQs. A similar analysis of the sibling data failed to reveal the cause of the variability in sibling IQ correlations.

Notes: Abstract Indian Muslim school boys, ages 13 to 15 years, whose parents are first cousins, were compared with classmates whose parents are genitically unrelated on the Raven Standard Progressive Matrices, a nonverbal test of intelligence. The inbred group (N=86) scored significantly lower and had significantly greater variance than the noninbred group (N=100), both on raw scores and on scores statistically adjusted to control for age and socioeconomic status. Genetic theory predicts both of these effects for a polygenic trait with positive directional dominance.

Notes: Abstract Genetic and environmental influences on IQ were examined in various subgroups of the Texas Adoption Project sample, including subdivisions by age, sex, and socioeconomic status. Also investigated were the effects of sampling error, restriction of range, ureliability of measures, whether or not the adoptive parents had information about the biological mother, whether or not the biological mother had elevated MMPI scores, and differences between verbal and performance abilities. The principal method used was path analysis, and the heritabilities obtained fell mostly in the range of 0.30 to 0.65.

Notes: Abstract To test the hypothesis that examiner differences influence family correlations in adoption studies of intelligence, data from two recent adoption studies were reanalyzed as a function of whether the same or different examiners tested both members of a pair. While each study yielded trends suggesting examiner effects on correlations, results of the two studies were directly counter to each other. Our conclusion is that examiner effects are not yet predictable and, overall, cannot be demonstrated to bias adoption studies of intelligence.

Notes: Abstract Eleven tests of specific cognitive abilities were administered to 108 pairs of young twins (average age of 7.6 years). Internal consistencies are high for all measures except Raven's Coloured Progressive Matrices and Delayed Picture Memory. Two-month, test-retest reliabilities are also reported. The twin sample is representative in terms of both means and variances when compared to normative data from standardization samples, and twin correlations for height and weight are similar to those obtained in six other twin studies. Because all measures were highly correlated with age (average correlation with age was 0.64), scores were age adjusted. Previous twin studies of specific cognitive abilities in adolescents and adults found genetic variance for nearly all tests. In contrast, our study of young twins yielded significant genetic influence for only 1 of the 11 measures, PIAT Reading Recognition, and suggested the possibility of genetic influence on 2 others (vocabulary and WISC-R mazes). Environmental influences seem to dominate, particularly for nonverbal measures, as children begin their education. In accord with other studies, we found that between-family environmental factors have an important influence on the development of nearly all of the measures of specific cognitive abilities. However, we found that our tests of perceptual speed and memory were substantially influenced by within-family environmental factors independent of error.

Notes: Abstract Unrelated children reared together (N=156) in 71 different families included in the Texas Adoption Project were compared for similarities on intelligence and achievement tests. The purpose was to see if a distinction between the two types of tests based on their heritabilities could be sustained. Results indicated no substantial differences in correlations for the two types of tests, and hence little or no support for the notion of an aptitude-achievement distinction based on differential heritabilities.

Notes: Abstract Positive correlations for SES ratings are reported for a large sample of adoptees and their biological and adoptive parents. The possible effects of selective placement and late placement are examined, and the validity of the SES scale is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Intellectual and personality measures were available from unwed mothers who gave their children up for adoption at birth. The same or similar measures have been obtained from 300 sets of adoptive parents and all of their adopted and natural children in the Texas Adoption Project. The sample characteristics are discussed in detail, and the basic findings for IQ are presented. Initial analyses of the data on IQ suggest moderate heritabilities. Emphasis is placed on the preliminary nature of these findings.

Notes: Abstract As a test of whether sex differences in cognitive functioning are determined by chromosomal constitution or hormonal events, eight subjects whose phenotypic sex differed from their genotypic sex were given a standard intelligence test. The results indicated that differences between verbal and nonverbal abilities corresponded to phenotypic rather than genotypic sex. The roles of environmental factors, sex steroid hormones, and alternate genetic mechanisms in determining intellectual dimorphisms are examined.
