Notes: Abstract A theoretical study is presented of a special case of stationary energy transfer in degenerate two-wave mixing in a reflection geometry. The two interacting beams consist of a beam and its first-order internal reflection component created at the boundary of a nonlinear medium. Numerical results obtained from the computer calculations are presented as graphs. It is found that, under suitable conditions, this phenomenon can be used to eliminate the multiple internal reflections.

Notes: Abstract The mathematical background and method of an in situ alignment method for rotating analyser ellipsometers, that requests only one wavelength, is described. The method is especially useful in combination with a microcomputer. As a further consequence a balancing technique is obtained that confines the error to the pure statistical fluctuations.

Notes: Abstract Wavefront reflectivity in a conventional degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) configuration can be calculated, using either approximate formulae, or exact numerical methods to solve the nonlinear coupled-wave equations. We have computed the wavefront reflectivity for FWM in a transmission and reflection geometry, respectively, using these two different methods. A comparison between them indicates that these formulae are reasonable approximations when beam coupling, diffraction efficiency and absorption are all low, and especially in the case of transmission geometry.

Notes: Abstract The transmission of ultrashort pulses from a mode-locked Nd: glass laser in germanium of various thicknesses (3 to 8 μm) has been measured as a function of incident irradiance. Transmission is seen to increase with irradiance level in all samples. The degree of enhancement is greater for the thcker samples. At high excitation levels, thinner samples show a peaking of transmission, which does not occur in a thick sample. Taking the sample as composed of thin elements, the parameters characterizing the photoexcited electron-hole plasma have been found by assuming homogeneous excitation within each element. Theoretical curves thus obtained give good quantitative account of the experimental results. Peaking of transmission is seen to due to a balance between absorption enhancement in the front portion of the sample and absorption reduction in the back.

Notes: Abstract A detailed analysis is given of the properties of the algebraic equations obtained when solving directly the nonlinear coupled-wave equations for degenerate two-wave mixing in a reflection geometry. An efficient method is developed for computing the appropriate root only amongst the multiple roots of these algebraic equations.

Notes: Abstract Using a new seventh-order numerical method [theO(h 7) method] for solving two-point boundary value problems, numerical solutions of the first-order nonlinear coupledwave equations for degenerate two-wave and four-wave mixing in a reflection geometry have been obtained. A computer program employing the Gauss-Jordan elimination technique has also been adopted to effectively solve the resultant large, sparse and unsymmetric matrix, obtained from theO(h 7) method and the Newton-Raphson iteration method. Numerical results from the computer calculations are presented graphically. A comparison between thisO(h 7) method and the shooting method, mainly from the viewpoint of computational efficiency, is also made.

Notes: Abstract A periodically stratified medium is investigated. Especially, we use a dielectric tensor, which describes an optically uniaxial crystal, whose axis lies obliquely in space and rotates about thez-axis as function ofz. The interpretation of the results differs considerably from that for another often treated kind of anisotropy.

Notes: Abstract The spherical aberration observed in the far-field diffraction pattern of a He−Ne laser beam traversing a silica plate locally heated by a CO2-laser is investigated. This leads to a thermooptical method suitable to evaluate the effective derivative of the refractive index and elastooptical method suitable to evaluate the effective derivative of the refractive index and elastooptical coefficient.

Notes: Abstract A significant contribution to the degradation of GaAs-based lasers and light-emitting diodes arises from the formation of so-called dark line defects. It is shown that these defects are accumulations of non-radiative recombination centres around dislocations. The centres are identified as As vacancies, which are emitted by climbing dislocations, concomitantly with the absorption of Ga interstitials. From scanning deep-level transient spectroscopy observations it is concluded that the so-called DX centres are Ga interstitials. The driving force for dislocation climb and thus for dark-line-defect formation is a supersaturation of Ga interstitials originating from the growth of the GaAs crystals under Ga-rich conditions as a consequence of the high volatility of As. Phenomena in other III–V compound semiconductors related to the formation of dark line defects in GaAs are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract The fundamental absorption edge of evaporated WO3 films is investigated. The optical gap of the virgin film is estimated to be 3.41 eV at room temperature and it decreases with increase of annealing temperature up to 200°C. Annealing at 300°C leads to change in the spectral shape, which is caused by crystallization. For the films annealed at 200°C, temperature coefficient of the optical gap is estimated to be −2×10−4 eV/K and the slope of Urbach's tail is found to be independent of measuring temperature up to 200°C. With electrolytic coloration, shift of the optical gap toward higher energy is observed. Magnitude of this shift is estimated to be 0.05 eV at the color center concentration of 7.5×1021 cm−3 when H+ electrolyte is used. If Li+ electrolyte is used, the magnitude of this shift is about three times larger than in the case of H+ electrolyte. This fact is interpreted by a small change in the host matrix structure owing to the injection of proton or Li+ during coloration.
