Notes: Abstract The photophysical properties such as singlet absorption and fluorescence spectra, the fluorescence quantum yield and fluorescence decay time as well as the laser performance data such as the tuning range, the conversion efficiency, and the photochemical stability of 12 sterically hinderedp-quaterphenyls have been measured in ethanol and/or dioxane at room temperature. The sterically hinderedp-quaterphenyls exhibit shorter laser dye emissions in the 330–380 nm range than the parent compoundp-quaterphenyl. The conversion efficiencies of the sterically hinderedp-quaterphenyls range between 1 and 21%. The photochemical stability of the sterically hinderedp-quaterphenyls is by a factor of 10 to 20 better in dioxane than in ethanol. 2-Methyl-5-tert. butyl-p-quaterphenyl and 2,5,2‴,5‴-tetramethyl-p-quaterphenyl are among the most stable UV laser dyes known today.

Notes: Abstract Design and characteristics of an “external cavity single mode GaAs diode laser” are described which allow continuous wavelength tuning over 50 GHz without mode hops. Tuning is achieved by synchronous tilting of both a thin solid etalon and a Brewster plate inside the laser resonator. Stabilizing the laser frequency to an external Fabry-Perot interferometer yields a frequency stability of ≦1 MHz at output powers up to 20 m W.

Notes: Abstract Thirteen new submillimetre emission lines have been observed when pumping CH3OD using isotopic CO2 lasers, and fourteen when pumping CD3OD. Three isotopic CO2 lasers were used12C16O2,12C18O2, and13C16O2. The new lines were observed in a Fabry-Perot resonator. The wavelength ranges observed were from 55 to 320 μm for CH3OD and from 66 to 531 μm for CD3OD. The polarisation of the submillimetre laser lines relative to the CO2 pump line has also been determined.

Notes: Abstract For a (0.5–0.6)m long He−Ne laser tube, single longitudinal mode 632.8 nm generation is obtained, using a higher gas-mixture pressure and application of an axial magnetic field. An efficient and very simple mode selection is obtained by gas-mixture pressure increase only. A multimode power to single-mode power conversion coefficientk=0.75 is obtained by increasing the tube pressure. A further increase tok=0.85 is possible with optimum magnetic field and gas pressure.

Notes: Abstract We observed and compared the opto-voltaic signals in CO and CO2 lasers. The signals are obtained capacitively from the water cooling jacket as a low voltage source not influencing the current circuit. We observed from measurement that the output power and the so-called optovoltaic input power have a distinct relationship depending on laser current and cavity parameters. It will be shown that opto-voltaic detection is a very sensitive method especially for CO lasers.

Notes: Abstract Rhodamine 6G-Cresyl violet dye mixtures are synchronously pumped to obtain double mode-locking. Subpicosecond pulses are obtained at two wavelengths in an experimental setup that is easy to implement into existing conventional synchronously pumped systems. In addition, the excitation mechanisms of the secondary dye are discussed and evidence for resonant energy transfer is presented.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we describe a simple and inexpensive Distributed Feedback Dye Laser (DFDL) system for picosecond pulse generation. This system consists of an oscillator-amplifier DFDL, either in the grating or in the prism configuration: both stages are pumped by a single TEA nitrogen laser with improved beam quality. Single pulses having duration of 26 ps are obtained at a frequency up to 100Hz; the overall pulse-to-pulse stability is, at the maximum frequency, of about 25%. This system is particularly well-suited for time-resolved fluorescence microscopy studies where short tunable laser pulses of low energy are required.

Notes: Abstract In this letter paper we analyse the effect of electron-beam qualities (namely, energy spread and emittances) on both spontaneous emission and gain of an Optical Klystron (OK). We use the relationship between average current and normalized emittances, typical of the accelerating machines without radiative damping, to evaluate the optimum operating parameters.

Notes: Abstract Laser dyes which are commonly used in pulsed laser pumped dye laser (PLPDL) systems have been investigated. It is shown that photoquenching plays an important role in the pumping process of all laser dyes, determining the efficiency of the PLPDL. Molecular parameters, such as absorption cross sections at various pumping wavelengths and fluorescence lifetimes of theS n (n〉1) excited electronic states of laser dyes, have been determined utilizing the photoquenching technique.

Notes: Abstract An experimental and theoretical investigation of the fluctuations of the pulses from continuous-wave mode-locked lasers is presented. It is shown that these fluctuations can be detected and quantitatively characterized from measurements of the power spectrum of the light intensity. Such power spectra can be measured with great accuracy by shining the laser output on a suitable photodetector and by processing the detector signal with the use of an electronic spectrum analyzer. Different types of noise such as fluctuations of the pulse energy, pulse repetition time, and pulse duration, can be readily recognized from their characteristic spectral signature. Experimental results of noise measurements are presented for a synchronously mode-locked dye laser pumped by an acousto-optically mode-locked argon ion laser, and also for a colliding pulse passively mode-locked dye laser.

Notes: Abstract Increasing the preionization electron density is found to be an effective method for improving the output performance of discharge-pumped excimer lasers at high gas pressures when the power-supply voltage becomes a limiting factor. In a small volume (2 cm3), x-ray preionized discharge, orders of magnitude improvement in XeCl laser power output (up to 400 kW) and pulse energy (up to 26 mJ) over previously reported results have been found possible using this method. Modifications to the low energy x-ray source and discharge system leading to these improvements are described. Various laser output characteristics are also presented and discussed.

Notes: Abstract The first passive mode locking of the continuous wave (cw) DCM dye laser is reported. Subpicosecond pulses as short as 0.68 ps were obtained over the spectral region from 655 to 673 nm from a simple linear cavity with no dispersion optimisation. The dye 1,3′ Diethyl 4,2′ quinolythiacarbocyanine iodide (DQTCI) was used as the saturable absorber.

Notes: Abstract Far-infrared laser action has been demonstrated in three previously unknown laser media. The substances used were: propargyl fluoride, 15-N cyanogen fluoride, and hydroxylamine. Assignments of the molecular transitions giving rise to the observed laser lines were made for the latter two compounds. New FIR laser lines were also observed with two substances, vinyl chloride and vinyl fluoride, which were already known as laser media by pumping with isotopic CO2 and N2O laser lines. The wavelengths of a total of 26 new FIR laser lines were determined together with the threshold pump power and an indication of the relative line strengths.

Notes: Abstract We discuss simple criteria which allow the determination of both an optimum drift strength and total length, for the optical klystron operation. The analysis of the gain reduction factors also includes the finite microbunch length. We extend the discussion to harmonic generation, where we also find an optimum for the input power.

Notes: Abstract A systematic description is developed for the dynamical behavior of a multi-mode unidirectional ring laser under modulation of the population inversion in a homogeneously broadened active medium. The modulation frequency is chosen to be close to the longitudinal mode spacing in the cavity. We report a rigorous and extensive numerical analysis of this system by choosing the dc component of the population inversion, the modulation amplitude and the detuning of the modulation frequency as control parameters for both cases of good and bad cavities. In the good cavity, this system exhibits two characteristic transitions toward the conventional mode-locked pulse oscillation as the modulation amplitude increases: the first transition to the region of the ordered amplitude and disordered phase of the electric field, and the second one to the ordinary mode-locking in which both the amplitude and the phase are ordered. In the bad cavity, two kinds of chaos are observed: the Lorenz-type chaos in the region of weak modulation and strong population inversion and the quasi-periodic chaos in the region of strong modulation and intermediate population inversion. The dimensionality of chaotic behaviors is also tested to reveal mechanisms of instability. The coherent and incoherent properties of emitted light at each region are clarified, too.

Notes: Abstract Injection phase locking of a powerful CO2 waveguide laser with a stable singlefrequency master oscillator is described. The locking range is experimentally investigated versus both injected signal frequency and slave cavity length. A locking tunability up to ±180 MHz from CO2 10P(20) line center has been achieved. Experimental results are in excellent agreement with the theoretical development exposed in the preceeding paper.

Notes: Abstract The CD3OH molecule has been investigated for new far-infrared laser lines by optically pumping with a cw waveguide CO2 laser. The increased tunability (300 MHz) with respect to a conventional CO2 laser permits to pump many new CD3OH lines. As a consequence 108 new laser lines have been discovered, ranging from 42.9 to 1155 μm in wavelength. On some lines the effect of an electric Stark field has been investigated demonstrating a laser frequency tuning. The total number of known FIR laser lines from CD3OH is increased to about 340 making this molecule the most prolific together with CH3OH.

Notes: Abstract We report the successful operation of a novel automatic impedance matching technique (AIMing) and observations of the opto-Hertzian effect. The AIMing system is capable of maintaining efficient RF power delivery to a CO2 waveguide laser over a wide range of operating conditions. The opto-Hertzian signal, produced by circulating laser power fluctuations and detected in the RF reflected power, has some interesting properties and may be used for laser frequency stabilisation.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the Doppler-broadened 11.76 μm 15NH3 emission line optically pumped in a ring resonator by a cw CO2 laser operating on the 10R(42) line. In the pure ammonia, even if the pumping occurs inside the Doppler width, the two-photon Raman process seems to be responsible for the laser emission. Both in the pure 15NH3 and in the 15NH3, N2, and He mixture we demonstrate the possibility of obtaining a unidirectional laser amplifier.

Notes: Abstract The performance of a continuous-wave (cw) CO flame chemical laser (FCL) of the CS2/O2/CO2 type is presented. The laser gives up to 0.7 W cw output power on a number ofP v (J) lines corresponding to 11→10, ..., 7→6 vibrational bands of CO molecule. The measured values of chemical efficiency based on the reaction O+CS→CO*(v)+S and the specific power are 0.1% and 0.7J/g, respectively. The spectral composition of the CO FCL of the CS2/O2/CO2 type shows lasing in the region from 5.194 to 5.573 μm. All experimental measurements are conducted with a nondispersive optical cavity.

Notes: Abstract Experiments on homogeneous initiation of pulsed avalanche discharges in typical XeCl laser mixtures show that the x-ray preionization pulse remains effective after a time delay of the order of 20 μs even at very high gas pressures (∼15 atm). Detailed kinetics analyses indicate that dissociative attachment of HCl is relatively slow during and after the preionization period so that the long effective delay time cannot be attributed to the storage effect of Cl− ions. Instead, the observed phenomenon can be attributed to the long survival time of the free electrons due to relatively slow diffusion and electron-ion recombination. Some problems arising from quantitative interpretation of the experimental results are also noted and discussed.

Notes: Abstract An undamped undulation superposed on the pulse tail of the passive Q-switching is observed using HCOOH gas as a saturable absorber. The pulse shapes with the undulation are nicely reproduced through the rate-equation analysis in which the laser gain medium is described as a three-level system. Good agreements between the observation and the calculation are also obtained in the dependence of the period and the width of passive Q-switching pulse on laser parameters. The mechanism of the undulation is interpreted as the relaxation oscillation attributed to the relaxation from the lower laser level. The collisional rate constant of HCOOH molecule is also obtained.

Notes: Abstract Population inversion of several resonance transitions in the rare-earth atom thulium has been achieved by electron collisional dissociation of TmI3 molecules in a fast electric discharge configuration. The inversion manifests itself by a strong spiking behavior during the initial current rise and lasts for several nanoseconds. Notes: Abstract A single-shot and synchronously-scanned streak camera, autocorrelation and noise spectrum analysing techniques are utilized to study the output characteristics of synchronously mode-locked cw lasers. Four main conclusions are drawn: (i) the pulse train from a synchronously-pumped dye laser reveals, besides phase jitter, considerable pulse shape fluctuations; (ii) autocorrelation measurements may be highly misleading when actual pulse shapes are considered; (iii) both the phase jitter and pulse shape fluctuations of the dye laser output are caused by the phase fluctuations of the pumping ion laser pulse train; (iv) the phase jitter of the ion laser proceeds from the fluctuations in the cavity roundtrip time with a characteristic time of about 5 μs. Under optimum conditions the rms noise of the dye laser output was 2% and the phase jitter with respect to the rf sine drive of the acousto-optical mode-locker, ∼30 ps. A qualitative explanation fo the noise properties is given.

Notes: Abstract The results of transient loss measurements performed in a self-sustained discharge KrF* amplifier are reported. Analysis of these results gives a minimum value of 20 for the effective gain to loss ratiog 0/αeff, indicating that efficient extraction of energy in subpicosecond KrF* amplifiers in the ∼1 J range should be achievable.

Notes: Abstract The passive and hybrid Q-switching and mode-locking of solid-state lasers, dye lasers, semiconductor lasers and gas lasers is reviewed. The dynamics of saturable absorbers and reverse saturable absorbers is illustrated. The nanosecond pulse generation by passive and hybrid Q-switching of low-gain active media is described. The picosecond and femtosecond pulse generation by passive and hybrid mode-locking in low-gain and high-gain active media is analysed. The performance data of passively and hybridly mode-locked cw femtosecond dye lasers are collected. The pulse shortening of ultra-fast pulses with saturable absorbers in intra-cavity and extra-cavity configurations is discussed.

Notes: Abstract An experimental investigation on shortening of travelling-wave ASE employing a transversal pumping is presented. A N2 laser with λ=337.1 nm, pulsewidth: 700 ps is used as a pump source. An ASE pulse with duration of 45, 55 and 45 ps from dye solution of Rh 6G, Rh B and C311, respectively, is obtained. Pulse shapes of output signals generated from these solutions in three different pumping schemes are compared.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a complete study of the temporal and spatial characteristics of the preionization of a XeCl rare-gas halide laser. The detailed study was made possible using the technique of laser-induced preionization which utilizes the uv radiation from a KrF laser to preionize a second rare-gas halide laser. In addition to the preionization study, high spatial and temporal resolution framing camera photographs have been used to investigate the growth of discharge instabilities which can lead to the premature termination of the XeCl optical pulse. The roles played by HCl, Xe, the buffer gas as well as the discharge energy loading in the development of discharge instabilities have been determined experimentally.

Notes: Abstract The unsaturated losses α, and the saturation intensityI s, were measured in an uv-preionized KrCl laser for optimized He and Ne based laser gas mixtures. The measurements were made as a function of the specific power loading and of the total pressure of the laser mixtures. Higher values for α andI s were found for the Ne-based laser mixture than for the He-based mixture. At 45 kV charging voltage and at 355 kPa of total pressure we measured α=0.053 cm−1 andI s =9.4MW/cm2 for the Ne based mixture, and α=0.035 cm−1 andI s =5.1MW/cm2 for the He based mixture.

Notes: Abstract A theoretical investigation of active-passive mode-locked lasers is presented. The main conclusion is that the intrinsic instability of a passively mode-locked laser due to the primordial noise fluctuation can be minimized by introducing an active modulator into the resonant cavity. Good agreement between computer simulation and experimental results reported previously is obtained.

Notes: Abstract The optically pumped FIR laser lines at 119 μm from CH3OH and at 127 μm from13CD3OH are known to be the most powerful in the far infrared spectral region. We report on efficiency measurements for our waveguide laser system. The effect of various parameters was investigated, resulting in the highest efficiency ever reported for the 119 μm line. The Stark effect and others parameters of the 127 μm were measured, and a new13CD3OH laser line at 175 μm discovered, with the same pump transition. These measurements are helpful for completing the assignment already proposed for the 127 μm line.

Notes: Abstract An XeCl laser beam has been used to investigate stimulated Raman scattering in H2 and in various H2-foreign gas mixtures. Helium, neon, argon, and nitrogen have been tested as foreign gases. In all the investigated mixtures with 50% of H2, the energy conversion efficiency to the first Stokes (353 nm) was more than 70% higher than that obtained in H2 at the same total pressure (40 bar) and pump energy (60 mJ). The dependence of the energy conversion efficiency on pump beam divergence has also been investigated.

Notes: Abstract The paper describes a photoacoustic spectrometer for detection of NH3 in power plant emission with a detection limit below 1 ppm. The radiation source is a tunable CO2 waveguide laser, and detection is performed at reduced pressure, where the vibration-rotation lines of NH3 are essentially Doppler broadened. Immunity against interference is ensured by recording a characteristic spectral profile, and problems associated with the high concentration of CO2, and the associated line center absorption are eliminated by utilizing the effect of kinetic cooling on the photoacoustic phase. A computerized spectrometer has been constructed and tested under realistic conditions at a Danish power plant operating a test facility for selective non-catalytic reduction of NO x . Results of this field test are given.

Notes: Abstract We report on room-temperature cw laser action of Er3+: Yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) and Er3+: Yttrium-gallium-garnet (YGG) crystals at 1.64 μm. The laser operates from the metastable4 I 13/2 manifold into an upper Stark level of the4 I 15/2 ground-state manifold of Er3+. Due to reabsorption losses, the Er3+ concentration of the laser crystals must be low. Laser pumping at a wavelength of 647.1 nm yields lowest thresholds around 30 mW and slope efficiencies up to 12.7% for Er:YAG. Laser operation in Er:YGG is achieved with higher thresholds of about 200 mW and smaller slope efficiencies of 0.9%. The effective emission cross section in YAG is estimated to be σe≈5×10−21 cm2.

Notes: Abstract The12CH3 18OH molecule has been investigated for new far-infrared laser lines by optically pumping it with a cw waveguide CO2 laser. The larger tunability (318 MHz) with respect to a conventional CO2 laser permits the pumping of many12CH3 18OH lines. As a consequence 100 new laser lines have been discovered, ranging from 34.6 μm to 653.2 μm in wavelength. The infrared spectrum of12CH3 18OH has been observed and all the fundamental vibration energies measured.

Notes: Abstract We have investigated the basic spectroscopic properties of Cr3+-doped gallium garnets. Weak crystal fields (Dq/B=2.39–2.55) lead to broad4 T 2→4 A 2 fluorescence in the 700–950 nm range depending on the chemical composition of the crystals. At room temperature the4 T 2→4 A 2 transition is homogeneously broadened, whereas the 4 K spectra of the2 E→4 A 2 transition show inequivalent Cr3+ sites and inhomogeneous linewidths of 8 cm−1 in these laser crystals. From 300 to 4 K, the oscillator strength of the4 T 2→4 A 2 transition is reduced by a factor of about 0.6 due to the temperature dependent electron phonon coupling. The transition probability of the2 E→4 A 2 transition correlates with the energetic position of the4 T 2 level, which is admixed into the2 E level via spin-orbit coupling. The comparison of the2 E→4 A 2 phonon sideband structure in garnets of different chemical compositions allows the assignment of some peaks to GaO4-tetrahedron modes of the garnet structure.

Notes: Abstract The equations of motion of an ultrarelativistic (i.e., moving at a speed very close to the speed of light) electron are solved for the one-dimensional motion in the combined fields of a circularly-polarised tapered undulator and a circularly-polarised electromagnetic plane wave, for a special choice of the profile of tapering. The features of an undulator built with this particular profile are investigated, as well as the possibilities to use this solution as a starting point for the approximate analysis of different profiles.

Notes: Abstract Continuous laser oscillation on different lines in the spectral range of 1.85 to 3.41 μm, corresponding to transitions between higher lying atomic sodium levels, has been obtained by optical excitation of sodium vapor with Rhodamine 6G dye-laser radiation, tuned either around the 3p−4d resonance (∼ 568 nm) or the 3p−5s resonance (∼ 615 nm). The pump mechanism consists of an atomic two-step excitation as well as an excitation of diatomic sodium molecules and subsequent molecular-atomic collisional energy transfer. Laser operation with low threshold pump power (〈10 mW) and large pump laser detuning (500 GHz) has been observed.

Notes: Abstract Absorption measurements are reported at 570 nm in optically excited mercurynitrogen mixtures at low mercury densities such as are found in atomic mercury lasers. The absorbing species is identified as the Hg2(O g ) dimer, and a model for the formation of steady-state dimer and trimer populations, which gives good agreement with the measurements, is described. The absorption gives rise to a loss mechanism in the mercury laser not previously considered, which depends on the intensity of the uv pumping.

Notes: Abstract In this study the decay of argon plasmas ejected from a MPD thruster described in a previous paper is investigated. Various parameters, e.g. the electron densityN e , the electron temperatureT e , and the absorption coefficient α of the ArII-488 nm transition are measured by different experimental techniques. Axial and radial profiles ofN e andT e are determined, and used to decide on the relevant recombination mechanism. In spite of the fact that the dominant three-body recombination favours the population of the high-lying energy levels, population inversions have been observed even with the most sensitive method only in plasmas ejected from a reduced aperture of the MPD thruster. The theoretical analysis shows that the ranges ofT e andN e , in which recombination-lasing may be expected, are narrow. In addition, the mechanisms that limit the population inversions in discharge tubes of conventional Ar+-lasers restrict the dimension of the plasma perpendicular to the resonator axis. From these facts and the described measurements on population inversions we conclude that the initial diameter of the plasma has to be reduced. We therefore propose a new discharge configuration where extended regions of constant plasma parameters can be expected. With this arrangement it should be possible to reach population inversions required for laser oscillations in ArII.

Notes: Abstract Population densities of excited Cu II-levels between 16 and 25 eV in Cu−He hollow cathode discharges were determined by emission spectroscopy. Population inversion was detected for several 6s-4p transitions. Investigation of the enhancement of Cu II vuv lines in He compared to Ne discharges showed that the excitation of the 6s levels by charge transfer is up to 100 times higher in He than in pure Ne discharges. Using the population densities and known transition probabilities, a single pass gain of 55% m−1 at 780.8 nm and 1.2% m−1 at 154.17 nm at a current density of 0.4 A cm−2 was calculated.

Notes: Abstract We show that in the presence of a bandwidth-limiting component intracavity selfphase modulation in high power mode-locked and Q-switched lasers is accompanied by interesting pulse-shaping phenomena. If the phase modulation is properly controlled the pulse duration can approach the limit given by the frequency bandwidth of the laser. For example, for a Nd: YAG laser our calculations predict an intracavity pulse compression by approximately a factor of ten over the typical pulse duration of conventional mode-locking.

Notes: Abstract Lasing in atomic lines of noble gases and fluorine, prior to excimer radiation, was observed in an electric discharge ArF/XeF excimer laser. Some Ar/Xe lines end at metastable levels, which are very important for the formation of ArF/XeF excimer molecules. Five new lasing lines of atomic fluorine have been obtained. Consideration is given to the use of lasing in atomic and molecular lines, that occurs in one burst, in investigations of the excitation kinetics of excimer states under the conditions of a high-pressure electric discharge.

Notes: Abstract The paper deals with the properties andI-V characteristics of discharges in narrow capillaries used, for example, for He−Ne waveguide lasers. It has been observed that discharges in He−Ne waveguide lasers are unstable because of the strongly falling characteristic. A theory is presented which assumes that at low currents wall charges restrict the positive column to a narrow plasma channel and are the main reason for the observed falling characteristic. A numerical evaluation for helium gives results which agree well with experimental data.

Notes: Abstract Energy transfer in DNA-dye-complexes after excitation in the UV down to 220 nm by means of a tunable laser was investigated. DNA of different base composition and polynucleotides were compared. The dyes proflavine, acridine orange and ethidium bromide were used. The energy transfer from DNA-bases to dye molecules was measured in dependence of the excitation wavelength and the base composition of the DNA. Models of the energy transfer from DNA to dye and of the molecular structures of the DNA-dye-complex (intercalation) could be deduced.

Notes: Abstract The possibility of building free-electron lasers and masers with quasi-circular undulators is considered. The two-mirror cavity is replaced by a suitable waveguide. The magnetic field along the orbit has a continuous component superimposed on the alternating one. Besides allowing large freedom for electron guiding and focusing, the structure allows effective negative mass conditions, which may enhance the electron beam modulation when space charge effect are important. Furthermore the radiation frequency can be higher than that in a linear undulator with the same electron energy, and long interaction times are possible in a compact structure.

Notes: Abstract A new device for magnetically displacing the output mirror of a laser resonator and synchronously tilting an etalon in order to obtain single-mode tuning of a dye laser over a tuning range of at least 10 GHz is described. Comparatively large displacements with good linearity of a coil mounted on a membrane and placed inside the strong magnetic field of a ring magnet are obtained for currents in the order of several hundred milliamperes. Together with etalon flats of appropriate thickness and reflection mounted in the resonator of the laser a versatile instrument for application in intra and extra cavity spectroscopy has been developed.

Notes: Abstract GaAs double heterostructure semiconductor injection lasers which now exhibit more than 25000 h cw room temperature lifetime are of great interest for future use as directly modulated transmitters for high bit-rate fiber optical communications. The effects limiting this application are modulation distortions, spectral width and additional spectral broadening in the case of modulation and spontaneous fluctuations of the output power. The dynamic and spectral behavior of injection lasers, the methods of high bit-rate modulation and the improvement of the high bit-rate modulation capability by coupling two lasers are discussed.

Notes: Abstract A theoretical model for the ultrashort-pulse (USP) generation by lasers with saturable absorbers is presented. The gain medium is assumed to be a two-level system whereas the absorber is described by a four-level system which is characterized by a two-stage absorption process and the pertinent relaxation times. Laser dynamical equations are developed in the rate-equation approximation and boundary conditions appropriate for an unidirectional ring cavity are established. Evolution of USP is investigated for different combinations of parameter values appropriate for solid-state laser systems by computer simulation, employing a finite difference approximation for the dynamical equations. It is shown that USP output is attainable even if the cross-section of the excited-state absorption isgreater than that of the ground-state absorption and the laser is operating just above threshold. In fact, it is found that through the participation of a strong excited-state absorption the discrimination against satellite pulses is enhanced so that single-pulse output is more achievable. Furthermore, it is proposed that single picosecond pulses may be obtainable from relatively broad initial peaks by utilizing the high pulse-selection and pulse-shortening efficiency of the absorber due to the contribution of the excited-state absorption. The applicability of the present model to singlet-triplet crossing and photoisomer formation is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract A grating-tuned cw dye laser with an emission bandwidth of less than 1 GHz and output power in excess of 400 mW has been constructed. This was accomplished using a newly developed holographic grating with sinusoidal groove profile, which resulted in an enhanced spectral efficiency up to 94%. The low losses and the broad spectral working range (more than 1000 Å) which can be easily covered by simple rotation make these gratings an attractive single-stage tuning element for low-gain cw lasers.

Notes: Abstract We report on room temperature quasi-cw laser action in K5Nd(MoO4)4 at a wavelength of 1.067 μm. The crystal was pumped with the 5140 Å line of an argon ion laser. Due to thermal effects actual cw lasing was not possible. Chopping the pump light with a low duty cycle of 1∶1000 leads to quasi-cw laser action and stable output power. We have determined the fundamental laser parameters: threshold pump powerA T=15 mW, slope efficiency η=22%, and internal lossesL=2.5%. In order to explain the measured relaxation oscillations, diffusion of the excited 4f-excitons is considered. According to a recently developed theory, a diffusion constant ofD=2×10−6cm2/s explains the observed results.

Notes: Abstract Frequency-tunable generation by means of F 2 + and F 2 − colour centers in a LiF crystal is reported. Colour centers were created by illuminating LiF crystals with electrons of 3 meV energy at the electron current density of 1 μA/cm2. The pumping source was a ruby laser with a peak power of 20 MW, a pulse duration of 20 ns, and a repetition rate of 1 Hz. The frequency tuning is obtained in the range of 0.88–1.25 μm. Discussed are the ways of pumping of colour centers and the possibility of lasing in the spectral region of 0.85 to 2 μm in the type of colour centers under investigation.

Notes: Abstract A guideline for the optimum design of linear wall-ablation lamps is presented with a simple empirical formula which describes the luminescent characteristics of lamps. The absolute luminescent efficiency of the wall-ablation lamp was measured. A high-energy dye laser with a quadruple-elliptical cylindrical cavity was constructed using these lamps, and an output energy of 23.3 J (11.6 MW) was obtained with an overall efficiency of 0.31 %. The energy-flow diagram of this laser system was computed with a rate-equation analysis, and the conversion efficiency from electrical input to laser output was determined. One can expect an overall efficiency of about 2 %.

Notes: Abstract A complete theoretical model for optically pumped dye lasers is studied using the rate equation approach which includes excited singlet and triplet state absorption effects. Closed-form solutions under steady-state conditions reveal a novel nonlinear threshold phenomenon: partial reabsorption of the excited laser light can lead to a discontinuous onset of laser oscillation above laser threshold. Theoretical and experimental results for a transversely and longitudinally pumped rhodamine 6G laser are presented in terms of softmode and hardmode behavior at threshold.

Notes: Abstract The characteristics of a stable, external-resonator spin-flip Raman laser (SFRL), pumped by a cw carbon monoxide laser of controlled mode quality and spectral content, are determined using a combination of molecular spectroscopy, Raman amplifier and confocal Fabry-Perot interferometer measurements, and heterodyne detection. Single-frequency output of a free-running external-resonator is demonstrated with an inherent linewidth of 〈10 kHz and a short-term frequency jitter of ≃100 kHz. With the resonator length actively controlled to lock an axial mode frequency to the peak of the spontaneous gain, the linewidth of the SFRL output was maintained below 2 MHz. In this mode of operation, small variations in the output tuning rate, corresponding to the magnetic field dependence of the conduction-electrong-factor, were calibrated. Molecular absorption spectra obtained using gas cells both inside and outside the resonator have been used to illustrate the high resolution, wide-range tuning capability and sensitivity of the system. Lambda-doubling of the $$^2 \pi _{3/2} $$ of the Q-branch head of nitric oxide was measured for values ofJ down to 13/2, below which the splitting is less than the Doppler width. The splittings agreed with predictions using parameters obtained by conventional spectra for higherJ-values.

Notes: Abstract The selection of a single longitudinal mode of a dye laser can be achieved with double or triple Michelson reflectors instead of Fabry-Perot etalons inside the laser cavity. These systems can be adapted to commercial multimode dye lasers. They provide a high efficiency and a good geometrical quality of the output beam. With a 7 watt pump power (λ=514.5 nm line of the Ar+ laser), a tunable output power of 1 watt was obtained at the peak of R6G, in the main output beam; the total single-mode power, including the auxiliary output beams, exceeded 1.4 watt. These results correspond to efficiencies of 14% and 20%, respectively (24% and 30% slope efficiencies). We discuss in the text why these efficiencies are comparable to those of ring lasers. In the infrared, with a 4.5 watt pump power (red lines of a Kr+ laser), 250 mW of single-mode output power in the main output beam was obtained at 780 nm with Oxazine 750.

Notes: Abstract Design and performance characteristics of a tunable ir waveguide Raman laser pumped by a high power dye laser are described. Using SRS up to third Stokes order in compressed H2, the wavelength range from 0.7 to 7 μm has been covered without gaps. Taking advantage of a waveguide structure in the scattering chamber, energy conversion efficiencies better than 1% with power levels in excess of 80 kW for the third Stokes component have been achieved. The experimental results support the theoretical predictions that a 4-wave parametric process is responsible for the production of the third Stokes component.

Notes: Abstract The interaction of free electrons and free electromagnetic radiation, in the presence of a uniform magnetic field, can result in stimulated emission or absorption. We analyze the dynamics of single electrons by solving the classical, relativistic Lorentz force equations of motion in these combined fields. An electron may gain energy from, or lose energy to, the radiation field, depending crucially on the phase and oscillation frequency of the electron's helical motion within the superposed, circularly polarized light wave. To first order in the radiation field strength, electrons in a monoenergetic, uniformly distributed beam become spatially bunched, but there is no net energy change. To second order, however, the beam may experience a gain or loss of energy, corresponding to attenuation or amplification of radiation. We compare the bunching of this laser process to the bunching processes involved in 1) the Stanford free-electron laser and 2) the cyclotron maser, and find significant differences in each case. Our analytic results provide a clear, simple picture of the interaction process, and can be useful in exploring light amplification in astrophysical magnetic fields, the magnetosphere, or in laboratory devices.

Notes: Abstract We show that a laser can efficiently accelerate charged particles if a magnetic field is introduced to improve the coupling between the particle and the wave. Solving the relativistic equations of motion for an electron in a uniform magnetic field and superposed, circularly polarized electromagnetic wave, we find that in energy-position phase space an electron traces out a curtate cycloid: it alternately gains and loses energy. If, however, the parameters are chosen so that the electron's oscillations in the two fields are resonant, it will continually accelerate or decelerate depending on its initial position within a wavelength of light. A laboratory accelerator operating under these resonant conditions appears attractive: in a magnetic field of 105 Gauss, and the fields of a 5×1012 W, 10 μm wavelength laser, an optimally positioned electron would accelerate to 700 MeV in only 10m.

Notes: Abstract Intense laser oscillation has been observed from ArF molecules at 1933 Å. Excitation of the gas mixture NF3:Ar:He=1:55:630 at total pressures above 2.1 atm was produced by a transverse electric discharge. The range of fine tuning was from 1927 Å to 1936 Å. An output energy of 0.8 mJ was measured from a laser pulse 15 ns in duration.

Notes: Abstract The effect of transversally applied magnetic fields on the polarization behavior of a single-mode gas laser is theoretically investigated, stressing the importance of the additivity of respective contributions influencing the time evolution of polarization parameters. By adding a new element to the existing theory, namely the contribution of magnetic-field-free regions in the active medium, and by considering the relatively large effects that small cavity anisotropies can cause, several apparent discrepancies between experiments and existing theory are resolved.

Notes: Abstract Feedback controlled self-excitation of optical pulses of nanosecond duration has been observed to occur rather reliably in a CW dye ring laser, oscillating in a traveling mode. These observations are described analytically by means of a direct time domain approach. It is shown that a steady-state Gaussian pulse whose time duration determined from the self consistency condition in terms of system characteristics describes accurately the observed pulse behaviors.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that when a distributed feedback dye laser is used to generate a train of picosecond pulses, the narrow lines observed in the spectrum are not longitudinal modes, but are due to the intrapulse refractive index changes caused by the heating effect of the pumping pulse.

Notes: Abstract Remarkable intensity fluctuations were observed in the LiNdP4O12 (LNP) laser by placing a moving ground-glass plate across the ouput beam. Resonance-like behaviors were also observed by tuning the moving velocity of the ground-glass plate, with respect to relaxation oscillations. Classical rate equations including the modulation term were given to explain the observed phenomena. Similar intensity fluctuations corresponding to relaxation oscillations were observed when the LNP laser light beam was coupled to an optical fiber.

Notes: Abstract Results of an investigation of 19 organic dyes pumped by a 1.7 MW discharge-pumped XeCl excimer laser are reported. The dye-laser emission covered a wide wavelength range from 340 nm to 710 nm.P-terphenyl shows efficient laser action. The highest energy conversion efficiency exceeds 40% in visible region. In comparison with 250 kW nitrogen laser pumping, higher efficiencies are obtained for most of these dyes in the same dye-laser configuration.

Notes: Abstract We have studied the interaction of stimulated spin-flip Raman scattering and stimulated recombination radiation in n-InSb using a CW CO pump laser. A change in linewidth and output power of second Stokes spin-flip radiation is observed when the tuning curve of the first Stokes stimulated spin-flip radiation and the stimulated recombination radiation cross. The observations are explained using a simple rate equation model.

Notes: Abstract We report, for the first time, on room temperature cw laser action of NdP5O14 and NdAl3(BO3)4 at 1.3 μm wavelength. The emission cross sections of the transition4 F 3/2→4 I 13/2 are 0.24·10−19 cm2 and 1.74·10−19 cm2, respectively. The lowest observed threshold was 45 mW and the slope efficiency was nearly 10%. The minimum threshold is expected to be about 5 mW of absorbed pump light for both materials.

Notes: Abstract Laser induced nonlinear absorption profiles in a three-level system have been recorded to study the effect of elastic collisions upon optical coherences. In our particular system, the signal is due to a pure double-quantum term, where we have separated the effect of phase-interrupting collisions from the effect of velocity-changing collisions. Experimental results show that the effect of velocity-changing collisions is very small, and that broadening of the signal is due to phase-interrupting collisions mainly. We are able to determine the increase of the decay rate of the coherent superposition (the “coherence”) of two levels of same parity [Dγ 13/dp=(6.5±1) MHz/Torr] and an upper limit for the mean velocity change (ũ≲5m/s).

Notes: Abstract Wave front of a light pulse is shown to be unstable as it propagates through a resonant saturable absorber, if its frequency is higher than the resonance frequency of the absorber. When ΔωT 2∼1, a small-scale transverse instability with the dimension of (λl abs)1/2 grows rapidly. Its growth-rate is of the order of the small-signal-absorption length of the medium.

Notes: Abstract Employing injection-locking techniques an oscillator configuration was found comprising in a simple way all the features required for fusion directed high-power CO2 laser systems. The oscillator provides emission in single axial modes on rotational transitions which can be freely selected by feeding fluencies of a few mW/cm2 at the particular transition into the oscillator cavity. In the same way simultaneous emission on selectable lines can be achieved. By the same principle the oscillator can be forced to emit in any orientation of polarization. The set up is relatively simple, the alignment rather uncritical, and the operation reliable. Gaussian-shaped nanosecond pulses with low forepulse power are produced with the help of a pulse cutter and saturable multiline absorber. The set up is described and its features are demonstrated by measurements.
