    Description: This timely volume responds to the epic impacts of cancer as a global phenomenon. Through the fine-grained lens of ethnography, the contributors present new thinking on how social, economic, race, gender and other structural inequalities intersect, compound and complicate health inequalities. Cancer experiences and impacts are explored across eleven countries: Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, France, Greece, India, Indonesia, Italy, Senegal, the United Kingdom and the United States. The volume engages with specific cancers from the point of primary prevention, to screening, diagnosis, treatment (or its absence), and end-of-life care. Cancer and the Politics of Care traverses new theoretical terrain through explicitly critiquing cancer interventions, their limitations and success, the politics that drive them, and their embeddedness in local cultures and value systems. It extends prior work on cancer, by incorporating the perspectives of patients and their families, ‘at risk’ groups and communities, health professionals, cancer advocates and educators, and patient navigators. The volume advances cross-cultural understandings of care, resisting simple dichotomies between caregiving and receiving, and reveals the fraught ethics of care that must be negotiated in resource-poor settings and stratified health systems. Its diversity and innovation ensures its wide utility among those working in and studying medical anthropology, social anthropology and other fields at the intersections of social science, medicine and health equity.

Le sujet principal est ici la guerre de Vendée, mais il aborde aussi d’autres conflits intraétatiques : Saint-Domingue devenue Haïti, l’Algérie, la Nouvelle-Calédonie du xvie siècle à nos jours. Ces contributions comparatives passent par l’archéologie, l’ethnologie, la littérature et l’histoire. Ce volume permet une meilleure compréhension de l’histoire et de la mémoire des guerres civiles telles qu’elles ont été pensées, écrites, reconstruites et transmises par les acteurs, les témoins, les contemporains, les historiens. Les douze textes, ponctués par les conclusions de Jean-Clément Martin, permettent de mieux entrer dans la fabrique des mémoires des guerres civiles d’hier et d’aujourd’hui.

    Description: Ce livre s’efforce de réparer une injustice : proposer une réflexion d’ensemble sur l’œuvre du philosophe français Mikel Dufrenne (1910-1995) qui semble un peu délaissée voire méconnue aujourd’hui. Si sa démarche phénoménologique héritée de Husserl le conduit immanquablement à s’interroger sur la place singulière que l’objet esthétique occupe dans notre monde, son projet est plus ambitieux. L’attention que Mikel Dufrenne porte aux différents arts (les arts plastiques, la musique, la poésie) ainsi qu’à la richesse des expériences esthétiques vécues, décrites et commentées, lui permet en effet de viser un but supérieur : non seulement redéfinir et réorganiser la phénoménologie autour de la question de l’art, mais faire de l’œuvre ce qui permet de remonter vers un principe originaire, la Nature, qui fonde toute création. Cette tâche singulière et méconnue méritait bien un effort philosophique collectif dont le présent ouvrage est le fruit.

    Les juifs italiens de Tunisie pendant le fascisme (2023)

    Description: Terre de mélanges culturels et de politiques coloniales, la Tunisie a attiré de l’Europe des courants d’immigrations aussi bien que des visées impérialistes. La trajectoire des Juifs italiens, dits Livournais, s’inscrit au carrefour de ces axes. Une communauté enracinée en Tunisie depuis le xviie siècle, mais toujours assimilée au monde européen. Une population cosmopolite, mais jalousement attachée à Livourne et à l’Italie. Une double minorité, à l’égard tant de la nombreuse population juive locale que des cent mille émigrés italiens vivant en Tunisie au début du xxe siècle, mais toujours caractérisée par une forte identité collective. Pendant l’entre-deux-guerres, la place sociale de cette communauté fut remise en cause par une série de phénomènes convergents : l’essor du nationalisme tunisien, les tensions diplomatiques italo-françaises, et surtout par la montée au pouvoir du régime fasciste, résolu à encadrer les communautés d’émigration dans sa politique impériale. Sur la base de fonds d’archives et de témoignages inédits, ce travail reconstruit le parcours des Juifs italiens de Tunisie face aux stratégies de fascisation de Rome, en interrogeant les croisements identitaires dans les contextes d’émigration, la question de l’adhésion de masse au totalitarisme et le poids des médiateurs au sein des sociétés coloniales.

    Description: Depuis plus d’un siècle la notion de « nuisible » fait l’objet d’une contestation de plus en plus vive. Pourtant elle connaît une singulière persistance sociale en tant que concept opérationnel qui donne aux hommes une certaine légitimité pour gérer, et souvent détruire, certaines espèces. À l’heure où la France vient d’adopter la loi sur la reconquête de la biodiversité, la question des « nuisibles » reprend une singulière acuité avec la multiplication d’espèces exotiques envahissantes et les vives controverses qui demeurent autour du loup, du renard mais aussi de l’utilisation des insecticides et des herbicides pour se défaire de « gêneurs ». Si la notion de « nuisible » demeure centrale dans la gestion du sauvage par nos sociétés, elle s’avère très variable selon l’époque, l’espèce, le territoire ou le groupe social considéré. Pour dresser un état de la recherche, historiciser cette notion et éclairer les enjeux actuels, il convient de croiser les regards afin de caractériser les différentes conceptions de la notion de « nuisible » qui coexistent actuellement et d’en retracer les origines, tout en s’ouvrant aux acteurs du présent. Ainsi cet ouvrage entend contribuer à explorer les interactions entre les sociétés et la nature, et permettre de mieux saisir leurs coévolutions.

    Description: Cet ouvrage aborde la question complexe des motivations de la prénomination à l’époque de la Renaissance. De nombreuses études ont été publiées depuis une quarantaine d’années sur l’anthroponymie française. Les chercheurs se sont appliqués à collecter des données et à établir des statistiques. Mais il ne s’agit plus ici de comptabiliser mais d’expliquer. Pour ce faire, ce livre multiplie les comparaisons. Il étudie les évolutions sur une période longue et compare les choix de prénomination dans différentes régions pour établir une synthèse générale. Il remet en cause les conceptions courantes sur la prénomination et offrent de nouvelles hypothèses explicatives. Il réfute l’idée selon laquelle le nom de baptême était principalement la marque d’une dévotion religieuse et met en avant les ressorts fondamentaux de la prénomination : assurer à l’enfant les meilleures chances de survie, de bonheur et de prospérité et l’intégrer dans un réseau de relations sociales.

    Description: Qu’on l’appelle « D-Day », « Jour J », « 6 Juin » ou « Débarquement », nulle autre précision n’est nécessaire pour évoquer l’offensive alliée en Normandie en 1944, alors même que de nombreuses opérations militaires de ce type ont été menées au cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale et que le sort de l’Allemagne nazie s’est joué sur le front de l’Est. Quelles sont les raisons qui expliquent que cette bataille – une parmi tant d’autres qui ont émaillé les conflits du xxe siècle – a d’emblée revêtu une dimension historique pour les contemporains ? Pourquoi précisément cette opération militaire est-elle désormais régulièrement commémorée par autant de chefs d’État sous le regard des télévisions du monde entier ? Comment expliquer le statut si particulier acquis par cet événement au fil des décennies, jusqu’au projet d’inscription des plages du Débarquement au patrimoine de l’Unesco ? En revenant à la dramatisation des enjeux d’une bataille annoncée près de quatre années à l’avance, mais aussi aux ressorts politiques, idéologiques, économiques et culturels qui ont contribué à transcender l’événement en épopée, cet ouvrage s’interroge sur la quête d’identité de chacun des acteurs nationaux à travers l’évolution de leur mémoire. Large parts of the country were covered in rubble, with no clean drinking water, electricity, or gas. Hospitals overflowed with patients, but were short of beds, medicines, and medical personnel. In these conditions, the potential for epidemics and public health disasters was severe. This is a study of how the four occupiers—Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States—attempted to keep their own troops and the ex-enemy population alive. While the war was still being fought, German public health was a secondary consideration for them, an unaffordable and undeserved luxury. But once fighting ceased and the occupation began, it rapidly turned into a urgent priority. Public health was now recognized as an indispensable component of creating order, keeping the population governable, and facilitating the reconstruction of German society. But they faced a number of insoluble problems in the process: Which Germans could be trusted to work with the occupiers, and how were they to be identified? Who could be tolerated because of a lack of alternatives? How, if at all, could former Nazis be reformed and reintegrated into German society? What was the purpose of the occupation anyway? This is the first carefully researched comparison of the four occupation zones which looks at the occupation through the prism of public health, an essential service fundamentally shaped by political and economic criteria, and which in turn was to determine the success or failure of the occupation.

    Description: La France du « Grand Siècle » est notamment connue pour l’extraordinaire mouvement d’embellissement qui toucha de nombreuses villes jusqu’à la fin de l’Ancien Régime. L’épanouissement de ce phénomène urbain sous le règne de Louis XIV a tôt fait de le faire assimiler au volontarisme politique du monarque absolu. Cette interprétation longtemps vivace a eu pour effet de passer sous silence l’action décisive des populations, des habitants des villes eux-mêmes, face à ces aménagements urbains. À partir des embellissements qu’ont connus les villes d’Aix et de Marseille au milieu du xviie siècle, cet ouvrage permet de revenir sur ces événements qui ont profondément marqué l’organisation de nos villes. En reléguant au second plan les aspects architecturaux et monumentaux de ces accroissements d’ampleur, pour se concentrer sur les processus juridiques et sociaux qui encadrent et accompagnent ces opérations urbaines, ce livre éclaire sous un jour nouveau l’action des habitants les plus divers dans ces projets. À partir d’un éventail documentaire particulièrement varié, ce sont plus largement les modes de production de l’espace des sociétés anciennes qui se trouvent mis en lumière. Du marché des échanges de biens immobiliers et fonciers aux appareils de pouvoir en charge de l’administration des territoires urbains, en passant par l’économie et les chantiers de construction, cette étude permet de mieux cerner la manière dont s’articulaient les logiques individuelles et les pratiques collectives dans la gestion et l’administration de ces « villes en train de se faire ».

    Description: Comme des milliers de braves des armées tricolores entre 1792 et 1815, Théophile-Malo Corret de La Tour d’Auvergne est mort au champ d’honneur. Mais « premier grenadier des armées de la République », il fit partie de ceux qui se virent décerner la qualité de héros. Réputé comme savant et admiré pour ses vertus de son vivant même, il n’était pas, c’est vrai, un soldat commun. Ce livre ne consiste pas en une biographie du célébré. Son objet est sa célébration même, depuis la Révolution française jusqu’à la Grande Guerre. Pour cela, parmi les outils fournis par les sciences sociales il manie plus spécialement celui de l’admiration. Ainsi nous comprenons pourquoi la gloire du « petit héros » La Tour d’Auvergne n’a cessé de grandir durant tout le xixe siècle. Héros célébré par la « grande patrie », comme par sa « petite patrie », et par son régiment, La Tour d’Auvergne est aussi un cas à partir duquel la construction nationale à l’œuvre peut se voir et se comprendre. Ce cas permet également de décrire le phénomène social de l’admiration, si prégnant que la société dans laquelle il se développa est ici qualifiée de « société d’admiration ». La Tour d’Auvergne est aujourd’hui bien oublié. L’ouvrage cherche donc enfin à comprendre comment et pourquoi l’admiration pour les héros s’est amoindrie, a cessé, voire a transformé certains modèles d’hier en repoussoirs à déboulonner.

    Description: « Cli-en-té-lis-me », le mot est ancien, dure et perdure. Mais de quoi parle-t-on au juste? « Je connais tel élu et il a le bras long, il pourra me trouver une place à la mairie! » Si la phrase est courante, quelles réalités et quels fantasmes recouvre-t-elle précisément ? Alors que le phénomène du clientélisme a déjà fait l’objet de plusieurs études en sociologie et sciences politiques, cette pratique originale a moins retenu l’attention des historiens du politique. Spécialiste de l’histoire politique française contemporaine, Julie Bour entend étudier les acteurs, causes, modalités et limites du clientélisme via une approche quantitative originale et inédite, reposant sur l’exploitation statistique de corpus importants de courriers de recommandation, dépassant parfois les milliers de lettres entre les élus et leurs administrés et portant sur des dossiers sensibles, symboliques ou plus prosaïques (emplois, décorations, service militaire, aide sociale, affaires communales, etc.). Elle concentre son analyse sur un espace test particulier qui est celui de la Lorraine et l’appréhende sur le temps long qui va de la IIIe République aux années 2000. Au travers d’études de cas portant sur des élus célèbres (Louis Jacquinot, Pierre Messmer, François Guillaume, Christian Pierret) ou plus anonymes (Jean Bernard, Jules Develle, André Savard) qui représentent l’ensemble des courants politiques, le clientélisme apparaît pour ce qu’il est réellement : une pratique très répandue (et non limité à un Sud méditerranéen arriéré), qui structure la vie politique locale, mobilise tout un réseau d’intercesseurs relais, crée des solidarités fines entre l’élu et les électeurs, et joue un rôle parfois déterminant dans l’élection et la longévité politique de certains parlementaires. Cette pratique, ancrée sur la durée, institutionnalisée au point d’être déculpabilisée, interroge la démocratie dans ses limites en termes de corruption et de clientélisme.

    Description: Il y a près d’un siècle, les premières réunions de la Jeunesse ouvrière chrétienne française se tenaient à Lille. Assemblés autour d’un prêtre, de jeunes hommes s’engageaient pour rendre aux ouvriers leur fierté et leur apporter la foi. Bien vite se sont organisées des associations comparables pour les jeunes garçons et filles issus d’autres catégories sociales. Ces mouvements n’ont pas permis la rechristianisation espérée, mais ils sont devenus de formidables vecteurs d’éducation populaire ; ils ont bouleversé la vie de plusieurs générations de militants et ont formé nombre de cadres pour la société et pour l’Église. Cette dernière contrôlait et appuyait cette mobilisation des laïcs, qu’elle appelait « Action catholique spécialisée ». Mais ce terme traduit-il vraiment la diversité des expériences vécues à la base ? Et comment expliquer l’épuisement de ce dispositif si performant jusqu’aux Trente Glorieuses ? Comment ces bouleversements ont-ils été vécus ? Où les énergies et les convictions sociales, politiques et religieuses se sont-elles ensuite réinvesties ? En abordant ces questions, cet ouvrage – qui mêle les analyses scientifiques aux témoignages d’anciens militants et aumôniers – permet de mieux comprendre les profondes mutations de la société française, du militantisme et du christianisme.

Le xxe siècle se décompose en trois moments évidents : le triomphe de la morale sexuelle traditionnelle dans la première moitié du siècle, avec une valorisation démesurée de la chasteté et de la fécondité du mariage. Le deuxième moment entre 1950 et 1978 est une longue période de crise de la doctrine traditionnelle que Paul VI tenta en vain d’étouffer. Mais le célibat sacerdotal et la condamnation de l’avortement et de l’homosexualité sont remis en cause. Cette dernière question qui n’émerge que tardivement sera abordée grâce au témoignage exceptionnel d’un prêtre homosexuel et pédophile. La tentative de Jean-Paul II de restaurer la morale sexuelle traditionnelle constitue une troisième phase. Comme chacun le sait, le pape n’a pas ramené les fidèles catholiques au respect des enseignements d’une éthique considérée par eux comme archaïque. Entre la doctrine intransigeante du magistère et des laïcs de plus en plus insoumis, les théologiens ont tenu une position stratégique : ont-ils contribué à renforcer et légitimer l’autorité du pape polonais ou préparé des accommodements tels que le pape François les propose aujourd’hui, voire des changements plus radicaux de la doctrine morale catholique ? Pour l’avenir du catholicisme, dans le monde développé du moins, la question sexuelle tient une place critique. L’Église est-elle capable d’abandonner ses « lois » de morale sexuelle ?

    The Rise and Fall of the People's Parties (2023)

    Description: The decline of the centre-left and centre-right people’s parties is arguably the most poignant feature of the crisis of democracy in Western Europe today. To understand why, this book explores the striking parallels between the life of democracy and that of the people’s parties over the course of the past century. It offers a transnational window on the history of democracy since 1918 by weaving together three epochs which are often studied apart: democracy’s troubled history in the Interwar era; the trente glorieuses after the Second World War; and the period since the 1970s. The book shows that democracy was only stabilized and legitimized when people’s parties emerged that managed to balance between facilitating popular participation from below, bridging divisions between social groups, and practising the politics of compromise. Ideas for such parties existed already in the first decades of the twentieth century. Nonetheless, Socialist and Catholic mass parties failed to transform into people’s parties, which was essential for the crisis (and breakdown) of democracy in the Interwar era. This was a traumatic experience which contributed to the unexpected stabilization of democracy after 1945 as party leaders transformed their organizations into broad-based people’s parties that embraced compromise and responsibility. However, this stability did not last, and paradoxically their transformation also harboured the seeds of democracy’s more recent problems. Over the past decades, people’s parties have struggled to connect to an individualizing society while having become increasingly absorbed by their governing responsibilities.

    Description: Au début du xviie siècle, un polémiste averti lançait à son auditoire, mi-protestant mi-catholique, cette sentence lapidaire : « Aujourd’huy, les disputes se réduisent à disputer comment il faut disputer. » Pour notre controversiste désabusé, dans ces rencontres entre théologiens, les moyens mangeaient la fin, les débats s’éternisant dans d’interminables disputes sur les conditions de la dispute. C’est de cette remarque – récurrente – qu’ont germé l’idée de ce livre et la volonté d’élargir le questionnement à des époques plus anciennes : à quoi bon ces rencontres répétées entre théologiens quand la conversion de l’adversaire semble si rarement le fruit des débats ? À nos yeux, l’amer constat que dresse ce théologien – des rencontres interreligieuses infécondes – n’est pas à attribuer à une quelconque myopie. Ce qu’il pointe est plus profond, plus essentiel. Il signale des enjeux alternatifs, il met sur la piste d’autres fonctions, moins évidentes ou moins assumées, des disputes interreligieuses. De ces grands débats, qui pensait vraiment sortir gagnant ? qui pouvait sérieusement se dire convaincu ? À partir de là, que recherchaient les acteurs de ces multiples scènes sans issue ?

    Description: Il existe au moins trois bonnes raisons d’étudier la sociabilité associative rurale en Mayenne entre les années 1830 et les années 1930. Premièrement, la sociabilité est un concept qui, après avoir connu un grand succès en sciences sociales il y a une quarantaine d’années puis avoir été considéré comme passé de mode, mérite qu’on y revienne dans une approche culturelle et sociale. Deuxièmement, le monde associatif dans les campagnes françaises au xixe siècle et au début du xxe siècle est un sujet encore trop peu étudié et auquel il reste à accorder toute la place qui lui revient dans les mutations de l’époque contemporaine, au même titre que l’école. Troisièmement, la France de l’Ouest est un espace injustement disqualifié par l’historiographie pour ce qui relève de la vie sociale. Des sociétés littéraires aux clubs sportifs, en passant par les cercles, les sociétés de cure, les corps de sapeurs-pompiers, les sociétés musicales, les patronages catholiques, les associations conscriptives, les amicales d’anciennes et d’anciens élèves et celles d’anciens combattants, il est alors possible de saisir comment, à l’époque contemporaine, une culture formalisée, incarnée par la sociabilité associative, émerge face à une culture coutumière, moins « civilisée », celle des veillées et des assemblées villageoises. Ce qui se joue là n’est pas tant affaire de remplacement que d’acculturation.

    Description: The jurist and philosopher, Jeremy Bentham, and his lesser-known brother, Samuel, equally talented but as a naval architect, engineer and inventor, had a long love affair with Russia. Jeremy hoped to assist Empress Catherine II with her legislative projects. Samuel went to St Petersburg to seek his fortune in 1780 and came back with the rank of Brigadier-General and the idea, famously publicised by Jeremy, of the Inspection-House or Panopticon. The Bentham Brothers and Russia chronicles the brothers’ later involvement with the Russian Empire, when Jeremy focused his legislative hopes on Catherine’s grandson Emperor Alexander I (ruled 1801-25) and Samuel found a unique opportunity in 1806 to build a Panopticon in St Petersburg – the only panoptical building ever built by the Benthams themselves. Setting the Benthams’ projects within an in-depth portrayal of the Russian context, Roger Bartlett illuminates an important facet of their later careers and offers insight into their world view and way of thought. He also contributes towards the history of legal codification in Russia, which reached a significant peak in 1830, and towards the demythologising of the Panopticon, made notorious by Michel Foucault: the St Petersburg building, still relatively unknown, is described here in detail on the basis of archival sources. The Benthams’ interactions with Russia under Alexander I constituted a remarkable episode in Anglo-Russian relations; this book fills a significant gap in their history.

    Description: This book tells the story of the experts who sold the idea of Franco’s ‘social state’. Despite the repression, violence, and social hardship which characterized Spanish life in the 1940s and 1950s, the Franco regime sought to win popular support by promoting its apparent commitment to social justice. This book reveals the vital role which the idea of the social state also played in the regime’s ongoing search for international legitimacy. It shows how social experts, particularly those working in the fields of public health, medicine, and social insurance, were at the forefront of efforts to promote the regime to the outside world. By working with international organizations and transnational networks across Europe, Africa, and Latin America, they sought to sell the idea of Franco’s Spain as a respectable, modern, and socially just state. In doing so the book also seeks to disrupt our understanding of the modern history of internationalism. Exploring what it meant for Francoist experts to think and act internationally, it challenges dominant accounts of internationalism as a liberal, progressive movement by foregrounding the history of fascist, nationalist, imperialist, and religious forms of international cooperation. The case of Spain reveals the contested and heterogenous nature of mid-twentieth-century internationalism, characterized by the tumultuous interplay of overlapping global, regional, and imperial projects. It also brings into focus the overlooked continuities between international structures and projects before and after 1945.

Loin d’être un spectacle devenu un sport ou un sport devenu spectacle, la boxe est dès ses débuts doublement codifiée : pensée et structurée comme un sport, elle est aussi portée et mise en scène comme un spectacle, ces deux dynamiques étant indissociables. Ensemble, promoteurs de spectacles, dirigeants de fédérations, journalistes, managers et boxeurs participent à la structuration d’un marché des spectacles pugilistiques inséré dans un tissu de relations avec d’autres grandes villes européennes. À l’aube de la Première Guerre mondiale, bénéficiant de conditions économiques et sociales spécifiques, la scène parisienne s’impose progressivement comme un des foyers les plus actifs de la boxe, lui donnant la forme d’un spectacle à la fois mondain et populaire, avant de se transformer après-guerre.     Description: Soigner les pauvres, telle est la vocation de milliers de jeunes femmes qui, tout au long du xixe siècle, prennent le voile en France et concrétisent ainsi un désir de vie religieuse et de service. Cet engagement ouvre aux femmes des voies pour s’affirmer hors de la famille, dans l’espace public et le monde du travail. Infirmières ou pharmaciennes, responsables de services d’hôpitaux et d’hospices, ou gardes-malades à domicile, ce sont les « bonnes » sœurs du xixe siècle. Figures de la charité, elles sont aussi les chevilles ouvrières du système public de santé dont elles accompagnent la médicalisation. Dans une société confrontée à une nouvelle pauvreté massive et alors que l’Église catholique s’inquiète de la déchristianisation populaire, les sœurs soignantes répondent aux attentes sociales et sanitaires, religieuses et morales de leur temps. La laïcisation républicaine signe-t-elle leur disparition ? Rien n’est moins sûr à en regarder leur présence dans Paris au début du xxe siècle.     Description: La léproserie Saint-Lazare, signalée pour la première fois en 1122, était située à proximité de la ville de Paris, dans le faubourg Saint-Laurent. Elle devint en 1632 le berceau de la congrégation de la Mission que saint Vincent de Paul avait fondée quelques années auparavant. D’imposants bâtiments furent alors construits pour abriter une importante communauté. La petite église gothique accolée aux nouveaux bâtiments reçut la tombe du saint fondateur, devenant un haut lieu de pèlerinage que des tableaux de grands maîtres devaient dignifier. La maison et son clos attenant, qui comptait encore 52 hectares de terres en 1789, étaient devenus un domaine préservé dans un Paris toujours plus densément peuplé. Par la suite, cet espace subit des transformations marquantes au cours des xixe et xxe siècles. Accueillant d’importants projets de lotissement dès la Restauration (Nouveau Quartier Poissonnière), ce quartier situé près de la gare du Nord fut l’objet, sous le Second Empire, de réaménagements dont James de Rothschild est le principal acteur. Transformée tour à tour en prison puis en hôpital, la maison survécut aux aléas de l’histoire jusqu’à la démolition partielle des bâtiments en 1940. Seule la nouvelle chapelle et l’infirmerie bâties par Louis-Pierre Baltard témoignent encore aujourd’hui de l’existence du clos Saint-Lazare. Une infirmerie récemment restaurée par la Ville de Paris et qui abrite depuis 2015 la médiathèque Françoise- Sagan. C’est non pas tant l’histoire de la prison pour femmes qui vit passer Louise Michel et Mata Hari que ce livre tente d’éclaircir, que celle de la maison Saint-Lazare et de son clos et, à travers elle, l’économie de la maison mère d’une des principales congrégations de la France d’Ancien Régime et son adaptation successive à différents usages.

    Description: The first five volumes of the Correspondence of Jeremy Bentham contain over 1,300 letters written both to and from Bentham over a 50-year period, beginning in 1752 (aged three) with his earliest surviving letter to his grandmother, and ending in 1797 with correspondence concerning his attempts to set up a national scheme for the provision of poor relief. Against the background of the debates on the American Revolution of 1776 and the French Revolution of 1789, to which he made significant contributions, Bentham worked first on producing a complete penal code, which involved him in detailed explorations of fundamental legal ideas, and then on his panopticon prison scheme. Despite developing a host of original and ground-breaking ideas, contained in a mass of manuscripts, he published little during these years, and remained, at the close of this period, a relatively obscure individual. Nevertheless, these volumes reveal how the foundations were laid for the remarkable rise of Benthamite utilitarianism in the early nineteenth century.

Le bocage a perdu le lien qu'il avait depuis son origine avec l'activité agricole : il reste une composante du paysage rural mais il n'est plus le cadre nécessaire du travail des agriculteurs. C'est la modification la plus importante qu'il ait connu depuis sa création. Le bocage n'est pas un milieu naturel : c'est un paysage construit ; il n'est pas là de toute éternité, mais il a été fabriqué et entretenu par des générations d'agriculteurs qui avaient besoin de haies pour pratiquer à la fois la culture et le pâturage. L'objet de l'ouvrage d'Annie Antoine est de porter un regard d'historien sur le paysage bocager de l'Ouest de la France : explorer les liens forts et durables tissés entre un paysage et ses habitants, lier la construction du bocage et ses transformations à l'évolution des sociétés rurales qui, de la fin du Moyen Âge aux mutations agricoles contemporaines, l'ont utilisé et transformé.

    Description: Les trois derniers siècles du Moyen Âge voient le déploiement, au sein du duché de Bretagne, de multiples « gens de savoir ». Personnages ayant bénéficié d’un enseignement supérieur ou d’une formation sur le terrain, ils déploient, parfois en les cumulant, leurs compétences dans divers domaines : l’Église, l’État ducal, l’administration judiciaire, le notariat, etc. Le présent ouvrage en est l’analyse, réalisée à partir d’un corpus de données prosopographiques constitué de 5 599 individus (Bretons ou étrangers venus en Bretagne), mis au jour grâce aux sources publiées, mais surtout au dépouillement de 5 238 cartons et registres d’archives. Les parcours universitaires et professionnels, les stratégies, les réussites et les échecs, les réseaux, les biens des gens de savoir ont ainsi été mis en exergue. Majoritairement étudiants à Paris, à Angers, et juristes de formation, ils reviennent de plus en plus dans le duché afin d’y faire carrière, en particulier avec le développement de l’État et des administrations ducale et judiciaire, au cours du xve siècle. Très polyvalents, il est fréquent qu’ils exercent deux ou trois fonctions différentes (évêque et chancelier, secrétaire et sénéchal, chanoine et médecin), auxquelles ils accèdent par toutes les techniques et ruses imaginables. Hommes de savoir, hommes de pouvoir, les plus efficaces d’entre eux veillent aussi à se garantir des revenus et un patrimoine mobilier et immobilier parfois très importants.

    Description: When the war was over in 1945, Germany was a country with no government, little functioning infrastructure, millions of refugees and homeless people, and huge foreign armies living largely off the land. Large parts of the country were covered in rubble, with no clean drinking water, electricity, or gas. Hospitals overflowed with patients, but were short of beds, medicines, and medical personnel. In these conditions, the potential for epidemics and public health disasters was severe. This is a study of how the four occupiers—Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States—attempted to keep their own troops and the ex-enemy population alive. While the war was still being fought, German public health was a secondary consideration for them, an unaffordable and undeserved luxury. But once fighting ceased and the occupation began, it rapidly turned into a urgent priority. Public health was now recognized as an indispensable component of creating order, keeping the population governable, and facilitating the reconstruction of German society. But they faced a number of insoluble problems in the process: Which Germans could be trusted to work with the occupiers, and how were they to be identified? Who could be tolerated because of a lack of alternatives? How, if at all, could former Nazis be reformed and reintegrated into German society? What was the purpose of the occupation anyway? This is the first carefully researched comparison of the four occupation zones which looks at the occupation through the prism of public health, an essential service fundamentally shaped by political and economic criteria, and which in turn was to determine the success or failure of the occupation.

    Description: Dans les Origines intellectuelles de la Révolution française, publiées en 1933, Daniel Mornet voit en la figure de Brissot « l’image complète de toutes les aspirations d’une génération ». Cet ouvrage vise à relancer son intuition en proposant, grâce à un travail inédit de dépouillement systématique de ses archives privées, une sociologie de l’entrée en révolution (et non de la pré-révolution, car on ne pouvait la prédire alors) d’une jeunesse intellectuelle au crépuscule de la société française d’Ancien Régime. Cet ouvrage permet de comprendre comment un homme du commun éduqué, d’abord désireux d’intégrer les hautes sphères de la société de son temps, devient l’un des principaux agents de son renversement. Habité par une idée de la noblesse fondée sur la vertu plutôt que sur la naissance, il s’en attribue les qualités et tente de les faire reconnaître sur le champ littéraire. Mais il se heurte à l’indifférence de ses pairs illustres et à ce qu’il appelle le « crime de bassesse », soit le destin d’être né dans la « classe des artisans ». Brissot a le sentiment de ne pas occuper sa juste place dans une société d’ordres et d’états. De frustré et méprisé, Brissot renaît à l’identité au sein d’une communauté des opprimés aux côtés du protestant, du juif, du quaker, de l’Américain, du Genevois, de l’Anglais, du Valaque, du Brabançon, du Batave, du paysan, du prisonnier et de l’esclave noir. De victime, il se fait observateur de la souffrance universelle, produit du despotisme, puis acteur de la Révolution, d’une révolution d’abord philosophique puis politique, à la fois universelle et nationale.

This book uncovers how in seventeenth-century Europe, persecuted minorities first learned how to use the press as a weapon to combat religious persecution. To mobilize foreign audiences, they faced an acute dilemma: how to make people care about distant suffering? This study argues that by answering this question, they laid the foundations of a humanitarian culture in Europe. The book reveals how, as consuming news became an everyday practice for many Europeans, the Dutch Republic emerged as an international hub of printed protest against religious violence. It traces how a diverse group of people, including Waldensian refugees, Huguenot ministers, Savoyard officeholders, and many others, all sought access to the Dutch printing presses to raise transnational solidarity for their cause. By examining their publicity strategies, this study deepens our understanding of how people tried to confront the specter of religious violence that had haunted them for generations.

Celles-ci s’inscrivant dans la quête d’une « vraie république » de certains radicaux au tournant des années 1880, oblitérée dans la mémoire républicaine du fait de l’engagement de certains d’entre eux dans le boulangisme. Enfin l’auteur montre comment Alfred Naquet passe durant sa vie politique d’acteur critique de la corruption électorale sous l’Ordre moral à la place d’accusé de corruption durant le scandale de Panama, scandale qui révèle des conflits normatifs autour de la question de la corruption.

De la promulgation des Articles organiques du 18 germinal an X à la Séparation des Églises et de l’État, l’étude du pluralisme protestant permet de définir de nouveaux espaces ainsi que de nouvelles et multiples formes de structuration institutionnelle. L’existence de lignes de partage externes, visibles au travers des modalités de coexistence, et internes, appréhendables par les points de tension inhérents à cette pluralité, révèle, quant à elle, les différents traits d’une identité protestante qui ne se conçoit que dans la diversité. Au-delà de ses divergences, cette minorité active fait preuve d’une vision collective et spatiale : par la création d’un territoire concurrent de l’Église catholique, par sa reconstruction institutionnelle, par ses réseaux, par ses engagements politiques, par la relecture de son histoire, elle se forge une identité originale et prétend jouer un rôle moteur dans la société de son temps.

Il propose, en définitive, un tableau totalement inédit des mobilités sociales bourgeoises, entre 1600 et 1824.

    Description: Au cours des années 1960, les pays occidentaux s’engagèrent, avec des rythmes et des conceptions variés, dans un processus politique, médical et administratif visant à sortir les malades des hôpitaux psychiatriques. En opposition au modèle asilaire développé au xixe siècle, cette désinstitutionnalisation valorisait une prise en charge de la maladie mentale fondée sur les ressources communautaires et les services ambulatoires. Mais est-ce pour autant la fin de l’asile ? En retraçant l’histoire des modalités de sortie de l’asile dans le monde francophone du xixe siècle, cet ouvrage constate la nature mythique de la désinstitutionnalisation. Si on a bien fermé quelques asiles et libéré des malades mentaux pour les réintégrer dans la communauté, on était loin d’atteindre les ambitions des réformateurs de l’après-guerre. En Europe comme en Amérique du Nord, la déshospitalisation s’est en effet déployée tardivement par rapport aux proclamations théoriques et aux injonctions légales, à des rythmes différents selon les régions et de manière souvent conflictuelle. C’est sur les enjeux et les conséquences de ce phénomène historique majeur pour nos sociétés que revient cet ouvrage.

La France y paraît bien lointaine. Une force diffuse, profonde, difficile à calibrer, rapproche pourtant les deux pays. C’est celle d’un mythe, le « mythe français ». Au cœur des quatre décennies qui précèdent l’indépendance du pays, il continue d’inspirer les revendications nationales, influençant la définition que les nationalistes irlandais se font d’eux-mêmes et de l’Irlande. C’est l’approche que nous propose Pierre Ranger de l’histoire irlandaise. Volontairement tournée vers l’Europe plutôt que l’Angleterre, elle renouvelle la connaissance que nous avons de la vie politique et culturelle irlandaise au tournant du XXe siècle.

La bande dessinée qui ne cesse d’ouvrir de nouveaux chantiers et de revisiter des domaines déjà balisés, soit en les renouvelant, soit en les inscrivant dans une tradition, continue d’investir l’imaginaire des sociétés contemporaines. Quotidiens, hebdomadaires, trimestriels font désormais une place de plus en plus importante aux cases et aux bulles, mais si les femmes de papier ont été parfois mises à l’honneur ou étudiées, c’est rarement le cas des brutalités, des insultes et des viols qu’elles subissent. Et pourtant, les récits graphiques regorgent de femmes victimes de violences les plus diverses : mariages forcés, humiliations, agressions physiques, viols. Des bandes dessinées relèvent du témoignage et de la littérature du réel, d’autres appartiennent au registre de l’imaginaire, mais toutes traitent d’un fléau universel, parfois en une seule case, d’autres fois en plusieurs planches. La visée du présent ouvrage est d’inverser les perspectives communes, de montrer que les femmes ne sont pas enfermées dans la catégorie des femmes aguicheuses, ni dans celle des faire-valoir, ni non plus dans celles des seules victimes. En effet, même humiliées, brutalisées, martyrisées, elles conservent leur dignité ou leur fierté.

    Description: In this book Shepherd offers a perspective on the shape of agency by offering interlinked explanations of the basic building blocks of agency, as well as its exemplary instances. In the book’s first part, he offers accounts of phenomena that have long troubled philosophers of action: control over behavior, non-deviant causation, and intentional action. These accounts build on earlier work in the causalist tradition and undermine the claims of many that causalism cannot offer a satisfying account of non-deviant causation, and therefore intentional action. In the book’s second part, he turns to modes of agentive excellence—ways that agents display quality of form. He offers a novel account of skill, including an account of the ways that agents display more or less skill. He discusses the role of knowledge in skill and concludes that while knowledge is often important, it is inessential. This leads to a discussion of knowledge of action—of the way that knowledge of action and knowledge of how to act informs action execution. Shepherd argues that knowledgeable action includes a unique epistemic underpinning. For in knowledgeable action, the agent has authoritative knowledge of what she is doing and how she is doing it when and because she is poised to control her action by way of practical reasoning.

    Description: During the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century, more Europeans visited the Middle East than ever before, as tourists, archaeologists, pilgrims, settler-colonists and soldiers. These visitors engaged with the Arabic language to differing degrees. While some were serious scholars of Classical Arabic, in the Orientalist mould, many did not learn the language at all. Between these two extremes lies a neglected group of language learners who wanted to learn enough everyday colloquial Arabic to get by. The needs of these learners were met by popular language books, which boasted that they could provide an easy route to fluency in a difficult language. Arabic Dialogues explores the motivations of Arabic learners and effectiveness of instructional materials, principally in Egypt and Palestine, by analysing a corpus of Arabic phrasebooks published in nine languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian) and in the territory of twenty-five modern countries. Beginning with Napoleon’s Expédition d’Égypte (1798–1801), it moves through the periods of mass tourism and European colonialism in the Middle East, concluding with the Second World War. The book also considers how Arab intellectuals understood the project of teaching Arabic to foreigners, the remarkable history of Arabic-learning among Yiddish- and Hebrew-speaking immigrants in Palestine, and the networks of language learners, teachers and plagiarists who produced these phrasebooks.

Older women were identified as an important patient cohort for the expanding medicalisation of French society and were advised to entrust themselves to the hygienic care of doctors in managing the whole era of life from around and after the final cessation of menses. However, menopause owed much of its conceptual weft to earlier themes of women as the sicker sex, of vitalist crisis, of the vapours, and of astrological climacteric years. This book is the first comprehensive study of the origins of the medical concept of menopause, richly contextualising its role in nineteenth-century French medicine and revealing the complex threads of meaning that informed its invention. It tells a complex story of how women’s ageing featured in the demographic revolution in modern science, in the denigration of folk medicine, in the unique French field of hygiène, and in the fixation on women in the emergence of modern psychiatry. It also reveals the nineteenth-century French origins of the still-current medical and alternative-health approaches to women’s ageing as something to be managed through gynaecological surgery, hormonal replacement, and lifestyle intervention.

    Description: Du milieu des années 1930 à la fin des années 1940, dans tous les pays européens du pourtour méditerranéen, des femmes et des hommes ont combattu, selon des temporalités et des modalités différentes, dans des mouvements de résistance antifasciste, que ce soit contre le régime en place ou contre une armée d’occupation, au premier chef l’armée allemande. Dès le temps de la lutte et à la sortie de cette phase de longues et intenses convulsions, la question de la place et du rôle des femmes a été soulevée, souvent par les acteurs et les actrices eux-mêmes. Elle a plus encore retenu l’attention de la recherche scientifique à dater des années 1970, quand les revendications féministes ont tait irruption dans le monde intellectuel et sur l’avant-scène publique. En revanche, les questions liées à la catégorie de genre n’ont été prises en compte que tout récemment et de façon inégale en fonction de l’aire géographique. Ce champ d’investigation relève davantage encore actuellement d’un chantier en pleine ébullition que d’un jardin à la française. C’est sur ce chantier que les artisan·e·s de cet ouvrage ont réfléchi ensemble dans une perspective transnationale qui en modifie les caractéristiques et la perception. Venu·e·s d’Australie, d’Espagne, des États-Unis, d’Italie, de France, de Grèce, de l’ex-Yougoslavie, leurs contributions éclairent différemment une période qui défie volontiers l’analyse.

    Description: Dans l’entre-deux-guerres, Hong Kong est déjà une ville-monde, un emporium où transitent les marchandises venues de tous les continents, un port franc où commencent et s’achèvent les grandes lignes maritimes, une colonie britannique où s’entrechoquent les existences et, parmi celles-ci, des Françaises et des Français. À Hong Kong, la France est d’abord officiellement représentée par un consulat. Autour de cette sphère gravitent des acteurs aux statuts formels qui participent à l’essor des intérêts français. Maisons de négoce, compagnies maritimes, établissements bancaires ou encore congrégations religieuses ont des besoins similaires : se développer à partir d’un environnement stable, puis rayonner en Asie orientale. Ces groupes ne reflètent toutefois qu’une partie de la communauté française. Des présences marginales s’ajoutent, éphémères, interlopes, rebelles ou simplement jugées insignifiantes. Tous ces éléments sont liés. Leurs interactions tissent la trame d’une société hybride dont les perceptions diffèrent de celles de leurs compatriotes restés en métropole. Ce tableau de la France à Hong Kong interroge les nombreuses réalités de la notion de présences – celles-ci pouvant également être désincarnées, voire immatérielles – et questionne ce qui conduit des Français hors de leur empire. La colonie britannique est un observatoire privilégié pour étudier ces réseaux et les acteurs qui les animent.

    Description: Hippolyte Luc (1883-1946) est l’un des bâtisseurs de l’enseignement technique et professionnel français. Orphelin de l’Assistance publique devenu agrégé de philosophie puis haut fonctionnaire, sa trajectoire emblématique de la méritocratie républicaine est celle d’un « transclasse » pétri de doutes et d’ambivalences. Directeur général de l’enseignement technique de 1933 à 1944 dont il a théorisé le rôle dans le développement d’une économie moderne, Luc a puissamment contribué à développer le réseau d’écoles publiques de formation technique et professionnelle, à instituer les diplômes d’État comme critères de qualification et de rémunération des salariés, et il a été un des pionniers de l’orientation. Resté à son poste jusqu’en juillet 1944, authentiquement anti-nazi, Luc n’a pas collaboré avec les autorités allemandes, ni manifesté d’opinion antisémite, mais ne s’est pas davantage engagé dans une action résistante. Au prix d’une compromission avec un gouvernement dont les choix politiques étaient à l’opposé de ses convictions, il a obstinément poursuivi l’accomplissement de ce qu’il considérait comme l’œuvre de sa vie : bâtir un enseignement technique au service du peuple et du pays. En se plaçant au croisement de l’histoire intime et de l’histoire collective, ce livre apporte ainsi des éclairages inédits sur l’histoire scolaire, sociale et politique de la France contemporaine.

Saisir la nature spatiale et sociale de ces interactions sur la longue durée, du xiiie au xxie siècle et à l’échelle de l’Europe, est l’objectif de cet ouvrage. Au-delà des périodisations classiques, les dix-sept études réunies ici mobilisent trois grilles de lecture : la première interroge le lien entre ville et université lors des périodes de fondation et de refondation ; la seconde analyse les rapports entre le corps universitaire et les sociétés urbaines ; la dernière s’intéresse à la dissémination de l’université dans la ville, bien antérieure à son développement dans les banlieues des grandes villes européennes à la fin du xxe siècle. Les deux figures du quartier et du campus ne résistent guère à l’analyse historique qui décrit la perméabilité des espaces et la difficulté à séparer les mondes de la ville et de l’université.

    Description: Attirées par le dynamisme des sociétés urbaines ou le faste de la cour, les élites nobiliaires européennes résident de plus en plus volontiers en ville durant les xviie et xviiie siècles. Qu’elles soient acquises à l’urbanité ou qu’elles conservent un lien étroit avec leurs seigneuries, qu’elles émargent assidûment au service du prince ou qu’elles ne fréquentent la cour qu’épisodiquement, ces noblesses usent de la ville de cour comme d’une scène à même d’illustrer leur éminence sociale et politique. Envisager la noblesse dans ces villes au profil singulier c’est questionner, à travers le prisme urbain, les contours de l’institution curiale, faire apparaître les points de contact et les interstices dans lesquels se nouent les relations entre le courtisan et la dynastie régnante. C’est aussi interroger les appartenances et les identités multiples développées par ces élites. L’habitat et les pratiques immobilières, la sociabilité, le mécénat et les investissements économiques, voire le simple séjour, sont autant d’entrées qui permettent d’éclairer la multiplicité des leviers mobilisés par les élites pour marquer l’espace urbain, à tel point que l’absence du prince – lorsqu’il règne à distance – ne paraît pas entraver la vie de cour. En abordant aussi des villes de cour paradoxalement sans prince, cet ouvrage fait le pari de montrer que la cour n’est pas forcément toujours là où réside le prince.

    Description: Mongolia’s mining sector, along with its environmental and social costs, have been the subject of prolonged and heated debate. This debate has often cast the country as either a victim of the ‘resource curse’ or guilty of ‘resource nationalism’. In The State, Popular Mobilisation and Gold Mining in Mongolia, Dulam Bumochir aims to avoid the pitfalls of this debate by adopting an alternative theoretical approach. He focuses on the indigenous representations of nature, environment, economy, state and sovereignty that have triggered nationalist and statist responses to the mining boom. In doing so, he explores the ways in which these responses have shaped the apparently ‘neo-liberal’ policies of twenty-first century Mongolia, and the economy that has emerged from them, in the face of competing mining companies, protest movements, international donor organizations, economic downturn, and local and central government policies.

    Description: The late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries are commonly characterised as an age of ‘neoliberalism’ in which individualism, competition, free markets, and privatisation came to dominate Britain’s politics, economy and society. This historical framing has proven to be highly controversial, within both academia and contemporary political/public debate. Standard accounts of neoliberalism generally focus on the influence of political ideas in reshaping British politics. According to this narrative, neoliberalism was a right-wing ideology, peddled by political economists, think-tanks, and politicians from the 1930s onwards, which finally triumphed in the 1970s and 1980s. The Neoliberal Age? suggests this narrative is too simplistic. Where the standard story sees neoliberalism as right-wing, this book points to some left-wing origins, too. Where the standard story emphasises the agency of think-tanks and politicians, this book shows that other actors from the corporate world were also highly significant. Where the standard story can suggest that neoliberalism transformed subjectivities and social lives, this book shows other forces which helped make Britain more individualistic in the late twentieth century. The analysis thus takes neoliberalism seriously but also shows that it cannot be the only explanatory framework for understanding contemporary Britain, and that ‘neoliberal’ cannot be the only descriptor used to categorise Britain in the past 50 years. The book showcases cutting-edge research, making it useful to researchers and students, as well as to those interested in understanding the forces that have shaped our recent past.

    Description: This chapter considers three connections between consciousness and issues in ethics: first, the relevance of consciousness for questions surrounding an entity’s moral status; second, the relevance of consciousness for questions surrounding moral responsibility for action; and third, the relevance of consciousness for the acquisition of moral knowledge. This is a disparate set of connections, prompting a question: is there anything about consciousness these connections have in common? One might expect the answer to be no. But debate in each area has thus far failed to settle just what about consciousness is so intuitively important for moral status, moral responsibility, and moral knowledge. Given this fact, it remains possible that there is some common connection of these different issues in ethics to consciousness. The chapter takes up this possibility in its conclusion.

    Description: Versailles ou la disgrâce d’Apollon entend briser l’image convenue mais fausse de palais du Soleil que Versailles n’a jamais été. Le mythe d’Apollon se déploie dans les jardins du premier Versailles, ses statues et ses fontaines, comme dans ses éblouissantes fêtes de nuit. Mais c’est le portrait du roi qui figure sous le mode de l’énigme dans les salons des Grands Appartements ; quant à la galerie des Glaces, il s’agit de l’héroïsation du prince, devenu maître de l’Europe. Cette imagerie jubilatoire produite pendant les vingt premières années du règne de Louis XIV demande aujourd’hui – comme elle demandait alors – décryptage. C’est un autre discours qui est tenu dans les trente-cinq années où Versailles est désormais résidence d’État. Le paradigme change alors. Le modèle italianisant et baroque du héros s’estompe au profit du modelé impérial antique (« classique ? »). La délicatesse de l’art le cède à l’expression de la puissance. Cela passe par le primat de l’architecture, une boulimie cumulative transformant les jardins en musée de la sculpture antique, la promotion des performances techniques où l’hydraulique somptuaire tient désormais la première place. La disgrâce d’Apollon ne se constate pas seulement dans les phases successives de l’histoire du lieu, mais dans son fonctionnement, c’est-à-dire dans l’usage qui en a été fait, les prescriptions édictées à destination des visiteurs, le ressenti dont ont témoigné les hôtes. L’écart entre les intentions et les usages du commanditaire et les modes d’appréhension du public doit être constaté et interrogé. La notion de propagande est-elle péremptoire ? Qu’en est-il des lectures successives, des modes d’emploi, d’une « consommation » de signes du roi produits dans un contexte donné par un public qui se renouvelle et dont les horizons d’attente se modifient au fil du temps ? Versailles ou la disgrâce d’Apollon analyse la globalité d’un processus créateur, mettant face à face un Versailles effectif, expression de la rhétorique du roi, et les Versailles imaginaires élaborés par ses usagers. La disgrâce d’Apollon devient alors celle du roi, d’une forme de la monarchie devenue obsolète à l’instar de son château-manifeste.

S’inspirant d’un modèle de gestion militante de la violence politique élaboré depuis la fin du xixe siècle par la droite nationaliste française (des Commissaires de Déroulède aux Dispos des Croix-de-Feu), ce puissant appareil de sécurité, incarné par des chefs charismatiques (colonel Rémy, Dominique Ponchardier), met au point un protocole efficace pour sécuriser les meetings et campagnes d’affichage. Avec ses gros bras et sa « brigade volante », le RPF tient la rue et permet au Général d’exister politiquement. L’ouvrage questionne la nature paramilitaire de ce service d’ordre (niveau d’effectifs, présence d’armes, sur-représentation de militaires, fonctionnement autoritaire et dimension offensive), interroge son rapport banalisé à la violence (effet générationnel de la guerre, propagande accidentogène, virilisme politique), analyse les pratiques de clandestinité, d’infiltration et d’espionnage issues de la Résistance et réactivées par l’anticommunisme de guerre froide. Remobilisé lors des « complots » du printemps 1958 et de la campagne référendaire de l’automne, ce service d’ordre, dans lequel le nouveau chef de l’État recrute ses « gorilles », forme début 1959 le Service d’action civique qui recycle sous l’impulsion du tandem Foccart/Debizet, les hommes et méthodes du RPF. L’ouvrage insiste sur ce que révèle cet appareil de sécurité de la culture politique gaulliste : la place de l’informel et de l’officieux, le rôle de la violence et du secret. Il propose une histoire politique et culturelle de la violence militante en France des lendemains de la Seconde Guerre mondiale aux débuts de la Ve République (1947-1959) via une lecture « par le bas » centrée sur le terrain, et sur des acteurs et types d’engagement souvent négligés car jugés mineurs et prosaïques.

Une bascule s’opère : les horizons révolutionnaires font place à l’invention d’alternatives ; le mythe d’une municipalité autogestionnaire se construit et se diffuse. Par la diversité de ses emprunts, par l’exercice des pouvoirs et la subversion des institutions, l’histoire de Louviers est révélatrice d’une généalogie complexe de la démocratie participative. Débats, espoirs, désenchantements et conflits sont ici minutieusement décryptés, questionnés et toujours remis en contexte. Louviers est un terrain d’expérimentation de possibles qui, tout en appartenant à l’imaginaire d’une époque, trouvent un écho dans les mobilisations et les attentes de notre début de xxie siècle.

Une de ses étapes décisives est l’unification de l’ensemble de ces forces résistantes, et la création de structures de coordination et de commandement uniques capables d’agir efficacement, suivant les ordres venus des instances supérieures, gouvernement d’Alger ou Conseil national de la Résistance. Dans ce contexte, le sort de la région parisienne et de la capitale est l’objet de toutes les attentions, pour des raisons aussi bien stratégiques que symboliques, et l’action du Comité parisien de la libération (CPL), chargé de coordonner localement la Résistance, est particulièrement scrutée. Reflet de la situation politique de la Résistance parisienne, où communistes et non communistes sont en concurrence, parfois en conflit, le CPL est le principal architecte de la prise du pouvoir dans les mairies de Paris et de banlieue, notamment par le truchement de comités locaux de libération.     Description: Imagination will remain a mystery—we will not be able to explain imagination—until we can break it into simpler parts that are more easily understood. Explaining Imagination is a guidebook for doing just that, where the simpler parts are other familiar mental states like beliefs, desires, judgments, decisions, and intentions. In different combinations and contexts, these states constitute cases of imagining. This reductive approach to imagination is at direct odds with the current orthodoxy, which sees imagination as an irreducible, sui generis mental state or process—one that influences our judgments, beliefs, desires, and so on, without being constituted by them. Explaining Imagination looks closely at the main contexts where imagination is thought to be at work and argues that, in each case, the capacity is best explained by appeal to a person’s beliefs, judgments, desires, intentions, or decisions. The proper conclusion is not that there are no imaginings after all, but that these other states simply constitute the relevant cases of imagining. Contexts explored in depth include: hypothetical and counterfactual reasoning, engaging in pretense, appreciating fictions, and generating creative works. The special role of mental imagery within states like beliefs, desires, and judgments is explained in a way that is compatible with reducing imagination to more basic folk psychological states. A significant upshot is that, in order to create an artificial mind with an imagination, we need only give it these more ordinary mental states.

Yet, even as the countries diverged in their political directions, they had to create new ways of working together economically. In Designing One Nation, Katrin Schreiter examines the material culture of increasing economic contacts in divided Germany from the 1940s until the 1990s. Trade events, such as fairs and product shows, became one of the few venues for sustained links and knowledge between the two countries after the building of the Berlin Wall. Schreiter uses industrial design, epitomized by the furniture industry, to show how a network of politicians, entrepreneurs, and cultural brokers attempted to nationally re-inscribe their production cultures, define a postwar German identity, and regain economic stability and political influence in postwar Europe. What started as a competition for ideological superiority between East and West Germany quickly turned into a shared, politically legitimizing quest for an untainted post-fascist modernity. This work follows products from the drawing board into the homes of ordinary Germans to offer insights into how converging visions of German industrial modernity created shared expectations about economic progress and living standards. Schreiter reveals how intra-German and European trade policies drove the creation of products and generated a certain convergence of East and West German taste by the 1980s. Drawing on a wide range of sources from governments, furniture firms, industrial design councils, home lifestyle magazines, and design exhibitions, Designing One Nation argues that an economic culture linked the two Germanies even before reunification in 1990."

It focuses upon the period 1830–80, exploring the interactions between the many different actors who developed, administered, and used one of the most important technologies of the period—the electric telegraph. Drawing upon evidence from Prussia, Bavaria, Bremen, and a number of towns across Central Europe, it reveals the channels through which knowledge circulated across the region, stimulating both collaboration and confrontation between the scientists, technicians, businessmen, and bureaucrats involved in bringing the telegraph to life. It highlights the technology’s impact upon the conduct of trade, finance, news distribution, and government in the tumultuous decades that witnessed the 1848 revolutions, the wars of unification, and the establishment of the Kaiserreich in 1871. D’un côté, l’esthétique y est adossée à la science dans trois domaines tout particulièrement : en mathématiques, l’idée combinatoire ne manque pas de retentir sur la poétique ; en physique, la théorie des champs permet d’introduire une philosophie romantique de la nature ; en biologie, la théorie de la forme permet de penser une morphologie naissante. D’un autre côté et inversement, les idées esthétiques débordent sur la science comme le montre l’approche goethéenne des phénomènes naturels. Au centre de cet espace théorique et du débat qu’il engendre, il faut placer la pensée de Kant comme le point focal de l’ouvrage. Aller de la science vers l’art ou de l’art vers la science afin de faire valoir leur unité qui est celle de l’esthétique et de l’épistémologie, telle est l’ambition du romantisme allemand. Telle est aussi l’ambition des études réunies ici.

    Description: When the war was over in 1945, Germany was a country with no government, little functioning infrastructure, millions of refugees and homeless people, and huge foreign armies living largely off the land. Large parts of the country were covered in rubble, with no clean drinking water, electricity, or gas. Hospitals overflowed with patients, but were short of beds, medicines, and medical personnel. In these conditions, the potential for epidemics and public health disasters was severe. This is a study of how the four occupiers—Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States—attempted to keep their own troops and the ex-enemy population alive. While the war was still being fought, German public health was a secondary consideration for them, an unaffordable and undeserved luxury. But once fighting ceased and the occupation began, it rapidly turned into a urgent priority. Public health was now recognized as an indispensable component of creating order, keeping the population governable, and facilitating the reconstruction of German society. But they faced a number of insoluble problems in the process: Which Germans could be trusted to work with the occupiers, and how were they to be identified? Who could be tolerated because of a lack of alternatives? How, if at all, could former Nazis be reformed and reintegrated into German society? What was the purpose of the occupation anyway? This is the first carefully researched comparison of the four occupation zones which looks at the occupation through the prism of public health, an essential service fundamentally shaped by political and economic criteria, and which in turn was to determine the success or failure of the occupation.

Sur les routes et le long des lignes, la constellation des facteurs, ouvriers et surveillants est alors plus masculine et plus algérienne que l’intérieur des bureaux de poste et des centraux téléphoniques, presque exclusivement européens et nettement féminisés. Au contact, les PTT entendent favoriser la rencontre d’une frange réduite de la population avec l’écrit, l’argent et une certaine forme de modernité technique, mais tardent à considérer les Algériens comme des usagers potentiels. Moyen d’exercice de la souveraineté mais aussi service public, l’administration des PTT est tout à la fois un instrument de contrôle du territoire, le vecteur d’une domination bureaucratique et une institution de proximité. Résolument du côté des pratiques et des acteurs, cet ouvrage contribue à renouveler la manière d’appréhender l’État en situation coloniale. Il saisit l’institution dans son épaisseur sociale pour révéler les mécanismes de l’interaction et de la domination coloniales.

    Description: The Politics of Security tells the story of how people experienced the cold war as a war. It is about the impact of the cold war on political cultures. This crucial issue is often forgotten in historical memory. In particular, the book follows British and West German anti-nuclear-weapons activists in their attempts to campaign for and create security after the destruction of the Second World War, and how their own version of security clashed with concepts advanced by their own governments. But the book also demonstrates how, as part of the protests against nuclear weapons, activists and their societies learned to live with the Bomb: it recounts how activists first discovered the dangers of nuclear weapons, but how a different generation of activists came to focus on other issues as the Vietnam War became their primary concern. And it makes comprehensible how activists in two societies who had fought each other fiercely in the battle of dictatorships and democracies of the Second World War could now come to see each other as part of a common campaign. Fundamentally, with its transnational approach, the book highlights how these two societies drew on very similar arguments when they came to understand the cold war through the prism of the previous world war. The book is the first to capture in a transnational fashion what activists did on the marches and what it meant to them and to others. The book thus reminds us that threats are not merely out there, but that they need to be created in a political process that involves struggles for power and contestation.

    Description: Entre l’entrée dans la guerre de la Ligue d’Augsbourg en 1688 et la fin de la guerre de Succession d’Espagne en 1714, la France connaît les deux conflits les plus difficiles et les plus disputés du long règne martial de Louis XIV. Combattant les armées de l’Europe coalisée sur toutes ses frontières terrestres et maritimes, mais également outre-mer, le royaume souffre d’un contexte géostratégique défavorable (c’est le début de la « seconde guerre de Cent Ans » contre l’Angleterre de la Glorieuse Révolution) autant que d’une situation financière de plus en plus dramatique, alors même que la crise démographique de 1693-1694 puis le grand hiver de 1709 s’abattent sur les campagnes. Malgré les victoires remportées par ce « géant du Grand Siècle » qu’est plus que jamais l’armée du Roi-Soleil, le demi-siècle de succès presque continus inauguré par la bataille de Rocroi prend brutalement fin avec les catastrophes de Blenheim, Ramillies, Turin et Audenarde, avant que la résistance offerte à Malplaquet et la manœuvre de Denain ne permettent à la France menacée d’invasion de sauver l’essentiel au congrès d’Utrecht. Cette face sombre de l’histoire militaire du règne du Grand Roi, moins connue que le temps des conquêtes célébrées par les décors de Versailles ou les toiles de Van der Meulen, a fait l’objet ces dernières années de nombreux travaux qui, loin de résumer cette période aux limites de la guerre de siège et à la médiocrité de généraux courtisans, en soulignent l’importance dans l’histoire longue des pratiques et de la conduite de la guerre. Croissance inédite des effectifs et de l’administration militaire, mutations de l’armement et des dispositifs tactiques avec l’apparition du couple fusil-baïonnette et le triomphe de l’ordre mince, impact accru de la guerre sur les sociétés à travers la création de la milice, des campagnes marquées par une grande violence (sac du Palatinat, guerre des Camisards) et la mobilisation des économies mais aussi des esprits, mondialisation des conflits et mise en place enfin de nouveaux équilibres diplomatiques : cet ouvrage collectif, rassemblant les contributions de chercheurs français et étrangers, interroge et éclaire d’un jour nouveau les nombreuses évolutions qui font des dernières guerres de Louis XIV une époque de transformations profondes et de refondation des rapports entre la guerre, l’État, le territoire et la société.

    Description: When the war was over in 1945, Germany was a country with no government, little functioning infrastructure, millions of refugees and homeless people, and huge foreign armies living largely off the land. Large parts of the country were covered in rubble, with no clean drinking water, electricity, or gas. Hospitals overflowed with patients, but were short of beds, medicines, and medical personnel. In these conditions, the potential for epidemics and public health disasters was severe. This is a study of how the four occupiers—Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and the United States—attempted to keep their own troops and the ex-enemy population alive. While the war was still being fought, German public health was a secondary consideration for them, an unaffordable and undeserved luxury. But once fighting ceased and the occupation began, it rapidly turned into a urgent priority. Public health was now recognized as an indispensable component of creating order, keeping the population governable, and facilitating the reconstruction of German society. But they faced a number of insoluble problems in the process: Which Germans could be trusted to work with the occupiers, and how were they to be identified? Who could be tolerated because of a lack of alternatives? How, if at all, could former Nazis be reformed and reintegrated into German society? What was the purpose of the occupation anyway? This is the first carefully researched comparison of the four occupation zones which looks at the occupation through the prism of public health, an essential service fundamentally shaped by political and economic criteria, and which in turn was to determine the success or failure of the occupation.

Dans ce contexte, les républicains modérés se trouvent au cœur des événements qui permettent l’émergence et les premiers pas de la « République des républicains », contribuant à donner au régime certains de ses traits les plus marquants et les plus durables. Cependant, si les événements nationaux et les débats à l’Assemblée ou dans les grands quotidiens parisiens sont bien connus, l’évolution et les recompositions du courant républicain modéré en province demeurent peu étudiées. Dans ce département particulier qu’est celui des Alpes-Maritimes, cas original de modérantisme méridional, ce livre analyse les partis, les pratiques et les différentes structures politiques afin de montrer comment le républicanisme modéré se transforme, se recompose et parvient à surmonter ses difficultés et ses remises en cause, tout en demeurant attaché aux valeurs libérales de 1789. Au-delà d’un « modèle » unique et parfois fantasmé, le cas des Alpes-Maritimes montre ainsi la souplesse, la capacité d’adaptation et la diversité du régime républicain.

    Description: « Les douleurs d’hommes sont muettes » écrit le comité de rédaction de la revue Maintenir, revue de l’Amicale des anciens des Stalags XVIII, en évoquant le destin tragique des prisonniers de guerre français de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Gaston Duplat – PG matricule 2677 détenu du 23 juin 1940 au 7 mai 1945 au camp de Coëtquidan (Morbihan), puis au Fronstalag 183 de Vannes, enfin au Stalag XVIII C de Markt Pongau (Autriche) – resta lui aussi pudique sur son histoire : un long silence jamais rompu. Un silence, mais deux carnets de captivité, plus de trois cents lettres, deux albums photographiques et un herbier annoté retrouvés dans les archives familiales après son décès et celui de son épouse. Ces documents furent le point de départ d’une longue enquête sur la vie de cette famille brutalement et durablement touchée par la guerre et la captivité du père. Essayer de reconstituer la vie de cette famille et de la comprendre au travers de ses mots et des archives, s’intéresser à l’histoire de la Captivité, des Stalags et des Kommandos mais aussi se pencher sur une histoire singulière, évoquer le destin du prisonnier matricule 2677 mais aussi celui de son épouse et de ses enfants, voilà l’objet de cet ouvrage.

    Description: This collection engages with debates within ‘criminology’ about matters of colonial power, which have come to be conceptualized through the language of ‘decolonization’. It explores the uneasy relationship between the ‘criminal question’ and colonialism, and foregrounds the relevance of the legacies of this relationship to criminological enquiries. It invites and seeks to pursue a better understanding of the links between imperialism and colonialism on the one hand, and nationalism and globalization on the other, by exposing the imprints of these links on processes of marginalization, racialization, and exclusion that are central to contemporary criminal justice practices within and beyond nation-states. It advances this objective by examining the reverberations of colonial history and logics in the operation of crime control. The volume also aims to explore the critical potential of criminological scholarship, as a field that sits at the margins of several disciplines and perspectives, through a direct engagement with Southern epistemologies and perspectives. To do so, it brings together established and emerging scholars from the humanities and social sciences, who work at the intersections of criminal justice and postcolonial studies.

    Description: The Chapel of St Peter-on-the-Wall, built on the ruins of a Roman fort, dates from the mid-seventh century and is one of the oldest largely intact churches in England. It stands in splendid isolation on the shoreline at the mouth of the Blackwater Estuary in Essex, where the land meets and interpenetrates with the sea and the sky. This book brings together contributors from across the arts, humanities and social sciences to uncover the pre-modern contexts and modern resonances of this medieval building and its landscape setting. The impetus for this collection was the recently published designs for a new nuclear power station at Bradwell on Sea, which, if built, would have a significant impact on the chapel and its landscape setting. St Peter-on-the-Wall highlights the multiple ways in which the chapel and landscape are historically and archaeologically significant, while also drawing attention to the modern importance of Bradwell as a place of Christian worship, of sanctuary and of cultural production. In analysing the significance of the chapel and surrounding landscape over more than a thousand years, this collection additionally contributes to wider debates about the relationship between space and place, and particularly the interfaces between both medieval and modern cultures and also heritage and the natural environment.

    Description: Entre 1958 et 1987, le droit français s’est enrichi de mesures favorables aux intérêts des cultes : exonérations fiscales, garantie publique des emprunts, etc. Quelle histoire se cache derrière ces nouvelles dispositions légales ? Comment la Ve République a-t-elle construit un cadre qui sert les intérêts des cultes tout en respectant l’interdiction de leur financement public posée en 1905 ? Le présent ouvrage montre que des responsables catholiques ont su trouver une oreille attentive auprès de décideurs politiques appartenant aux différentes familles de la droite. Dans les années 1960, leurs demandes visaient à abaisser le coût de construction des églises. Au cœur des années 1970, l’enjeu était l’intégration à moindres frais des prêtres, religieux et religieuses à la Sécurité sociale. Une décennie plus tard, il s’agissait de relancer le denier du culte en autorisant sa déductibilité fiscale. Chemin faisant, le rapprochement de l’État et des religions organisé par la loi Debré (1959) sur le terrain scolaire a été complété sur le plan cultuel par une série de dispositifs qui restent d’actualité.

    Medicine in an Age of Revolution (2023)

    Description: This work is the first major attempt since the 1970s to challenge the idea that the essential engine of medical (and scientific) change in seventeenth-century Britain emanated from puritanism. It seeks to reaffirm the crucial role of the period of the civil wars and their aftermath in providing the most congenial context for a re-evaluation of traditional attitudes to medicine. In the process, it rejects the idea that such initiatives were the special preserve of a small religious elite (puritans), claiming instead that enthusiasm for change can be found across the religious spectrum. At the same time, the work demonstrates that medical practitioners were increasingly drawn into contemporary religious and political debates in a way that led to a fundamental politicization of the ‘profession’. By the end of the seventeenth century, it was now commonplace to see doctors, apothecaries and surgeons fully engaged in everyday political and civic life. At the same time, religious and political orientation often became an important factor in the career development of medics, especially in towns and cities, where substantial benefits might accrue to those who found themselves in favour with the ruling elites, be they Whig or Tory. The body politic, a Renaissance commonplace, was now peopled by medical practitioners who often claimed a special authority when it came to diagnosing the ills of late seventeenth-century society.

    Description: La Réformation ne donne pas seulement naissance à une nouvelle manière de croire, mais aussi à une nouvelle manière de voir. Dans l’Empire allemand, si Luther tolère les images dans les églises, il n’en provoque pas moins l’apparition d’une nouvelle iconographie religieuse et profane. On peut en effet relier à la prédication luthérienne et au combat confessionnel la multiplication d’images du prince, produites par l’atelier de Lucas Cranach, peintre graveur attitré des électeurs de Saxe, premiers défenseurs du Réformateur. Ce nouvel art visuel du portrait donne naissance à des formes inédites de la représentation de l’autorité politique. En réponse à cette expansion du portrait protestant, les princes catholiques de l’Empire s’engagent eux aussi dans une production visuelle nouvelle. Ainsi s’instaure, à côté du combat des armes et de la parole, une guerre des images dont l’enjeu est bien la reconnaissance légitime d’une foi, mais aussi la redéfinition du pouvoir civil. Après la paix d’Augsbourg (1555) qui reconnaît une existence légale aux luthériens, les formes de représentations de ces derniers tendent à capter les modalités figuratives impériales et monarchiques, fondées pourtant sur un modèle catholique de l’Incarnation. Le portrait du prince adossé à une importante réflexion théorique sur son autorité devient un des moyens de penser un pouvoir en pleine mutation.

    Description: An Anthropology of Landscape tells the fascinating story of a heathland landscape in south-west England and the way different individuals and groups engage with it. Based on a long-term anthropological study, the book emphasises four individual themes: embodied identities, the landscape as a sensuous material form that is acted upon and in turn acts on people, the landscape as contested, and its relation to emotion. The landscape is discussed in relation to these themes as both ‘taskscape’ and ‘leisurescape’, and from the perspective of different user groups. First, those who manage the landscape and use it for work: conservationists, environmentalists, archaeologists, the Royal Marines, and quarrying interests. Second, those who use it in their leisure time: cyclists and horse riders, model aircraft flyers, walkers, people who fish there, and artists who are inspired by it. The book makes an innovative contribution to landscape studies and will appeal to all those interested in nature conservation, historic preservation, the politics of nature, the politics of identity, and an anthropology of Britain.

    Description: Durant l’entre-deux-guerres, au sein de la chronique locale de la presse quotidienne régionale, pas un seul jour ne se passait sans que le journaliste n’informe son lecteur de la grave menace dont il était à chaque instant la cible : chapardage, filouterie, entôlage, cambriolage, agression, meurtre ! La chronique des faits divers restait le témoignage concret d’un danger permanent, d’une catastrophe quotidienne : le larcin. Illustration pessimiste de la fragilité de la vie ordinaire, l’article de vol demeurait toutefois dans le même temps une arme utile pour contrer ce funeste péril ; il restait en effet un lieu de savoir essentiel, décryptant autant la technologie déprédatrice que le profil retenu de son auteur, apportant à chacun des connaissances précieuses pour se prémunir des ravages du larron. Le caractère pédagogique de l’article sur le vol apparaît du reste d’autant plus crucial, que son but n’était pas seulement limité à assurer la veille de ses biens par le citoyen lecteur : en captant son attention grâce au sentiment humain le plus mobilisateur (la peur), le fait divers se dévoile également comme l’occasion d’un cours sur l’État, invitant chacun à honorer les institutions qui le protègent, voire d’une véritable leçon de vie, destinée à contrôler tout geste, émotion ou passion populaire. En s’intéressant à la publicité d’un comportement humain vil, illégal, déviant, ce n’est pas seulement l’image d’un monde criminel disparu qui resurgit, c’est en définitive, et paradoxalement, les coutumes, les normes, les lois qui régissaient le bon fonctionnement d’une société encore méconnue, qui parviennent jusqu’à nous.

    Description: Philosophical theorizing about moral responsibility has recently taken a “social” turn, marking a shift in focus from traditional metaphysical concerns about free will and determinism. Yet despite this social turn, the implications of structural injustice and inequalities of power for theorizing about moral responsibility remain surprisingly neglected in philosophical literature. Recent theories have attended to the interpersonal dynamics at the heart of moral responsibility practices, and the role of the moral environment in scaffolding agential capacities. However, they assume an overly idealized conception of agency and of our moral responsibility practices as reciprocal exchanges between equally empowered and situated agents. The essays in this volume systematically challenge this assumption. Leading theorists of moral responsibility, including Michael McKenna, Marina Oshana, and Manuel Vargas, consider the implications of oppression and structural inequality for their respective theories. Neil Levy urges the need to refocus our analyses of the epistemic and control conditions for moral responsibility from individual to socially extended agents. Leading theorists of relational autonomy, including Catriona Mackenzie, Natalie Stoljar, and Andrea Westlund develop new insights into the topic of moral responsibility. Other contributors bring debates about moral responsibility into dialogue with recent work in feminist philosophy, and topics such as epistemic injustice, implicit bias and blame. Collectively, the essays in this volume reorient philosophical debates about moral responsibility in important new directions.

    Description: Rupture brutale dans la vie des chapitres français, la Constitution civile du clergé du 12 juillet 1790 marque souvent le terme des études consacrées à l’histoire de l’ordo canonicus. L’ouvrage se propose au contraire d’examiner la reconstitution concordataire des chapitres de cathédrales jusqu’à l’extinction de l’ancien clergé au milieu du XIXe siècle. En effet, l’étude du clergé intermédiaire que forment les chapitres de chanoines permet de mieux saisir les évolutions de la société cléricale de la fin du système bénéficial d’Ancien Régime à l’âge des notables. Héritier du presbytère antique et sénat de l’Église diocésaine, investi de la juridiction épiscopale pendant la vacance du siège, le chapitre cathédral est un lieu ecclésiologique qui permet d’étudier les rapports entre évêques et prêtres, entre Église locale et Église universelle, tandis que les chanoines du Concordat continuent, malgré leur subordination à l’autorité épiscopale, à former une élite intermédiaire intégrée à un nouveau régime de notabilité cléricale.

    Description: There is a near universal consensus that the bearers of moral responsibility are the individuals we identify with proper names. I suggest that if we take the exercise of agency as a guide to the identification of agents, we may find that agents sometimes extend into the world: they may be constituted by several individuals and/or by institutions. These extended agents may be responsible for morally significant outcomes. I argue that institutions or extended agents may also be responsible for the failure of individuals to satisfy the epistemic conditions on moral responsibility. Individuals may believe virtuously but falsely, due to the way in which cues to reliability are socially distributed. I conclude by suggesting that a focus on individual responsibility may have distracted us from the urgent task of reforming the institutional actors responsible for widespread ignorance about morally significant facts.

    Description: Revisiter la notion d’année terrible telle qu’elle avait été forgée par Victor Hugo pour désigner la séquence allant de la déclaration de guerre de juillet 1870 à la fin de la semaine sanglante en mai 1871, tel est l’enjeu de cet ouvrage collectif. Fondé sur une approche transpériodique et transdisciplinaire, il invite à une réflexion sur les processus de désignation et les usages de ce chrononyme d’année terrible. Cinq séquences d’entrée en guerre ont été retenues afin de les comparer. Comment les historiens questionnent-ils cette notion polysémique ? Interrogeant les paradigmes de ces moments de basculement dans une autre temporalité, ils en définissent l’échelle la plus pertinente pour capter la perception des contemporains face à cette expérience traumatisante qui bouleverse les repères. Pour cela, ils analysent les traces scripturales, visuelles, matérielles produites par les contemporains, figures en vue comme anonymes. Mais cet ouvrage propose aussi une réflexion sur les processus de construction mémorielle de ces années terribles, en termes de filiations comme de décalages, avec l’objectif de leur instrumentalisation politique.

    Description: Au carrefour de l’histoire et de la sociologie des migrations, il s’agit ici de comprendre les « carrières migratoires » des Kurdes, de leur départ de Turquie à leur arrivée en France et en Belgique. Ces hommes et ces femmes ont emprunté des routes migratoires et intégré des réseaux variés afin de traverser des frontières terrestres, maritimes, aériennes mais également administratives et linguistiques. Leurs circulations migratoires se sont formées à partir de filières régionales qui se sont stabilisées dans les territoires d’accueil grâce à des solidarités multiples révélant des interactions entre les Kurdes et ceux qui les entourent. Ces recompositions territoriales entre les différentes générations de Kurdes ont favorisé la création d’associations qui maintiennent des repères collectifs en situation d’exil et rendent visible le conflit turco-kurde. À partir de sources écrites inédites, d’enquêtes de terrain et de témoignages de Kurdes, cette recherche analyse les parcours administratifs de l’asile, des mariages, des regroupements familiaux, des naturalisations et des invitations à quitter le territoire en France et en Belgique. Ces parcours ont soulevé des questions sur l’évolution du statut juridique, des identités et des subjectivités entre celui ou celle qui « peut devenir un ou une réfugiée », qui « peut se marier », qui « peut être naturalisé ». Les Kurdes ont été identifiés différemment selon les catégories construites par les États d’accueil. Ces catégories qui ne sont jamais stables ni très claires et où chaque document apporté (chaque histoire révélée) est sujet à suspicion et à vérification.

En faisant de ce duché un laboratoire d’observation privilégié, ce livre reconstruit les modalités par lesquelles l’Église et l’État mettent en place les normes morales essentielles à la définition et à la consolidation d’un ordre politique et social. En s’appuyant sur le concept de péché et en l’adaptant aux différents contextes, ces institutions forgent des identités d’exclusion à partir de la religion, de la nationalité, du statut social, du genre ou de l’âge, qu’elles médiatisent dans l’espace public par une pluralité de discours. La fabrique de la morale devient ainsi une arme de culpabilisation des sujets bretons, mais aussi un instrument de stigmatisation d’une altérité menaçante, visant à justifier l’obéissance aux pouvoirs établis. Fondé sur des concepts transdisciplinaires et des sources variées (productions juridiques, œuvres de pastorale, textes littéraires, sculptures), cet ouvrage est destiné aussi bien aux historiens et chercheurs en sciences sociales qu’à tout public soucieux de saisir les ressorts de la domination idéologique au Moyen Âge.

    Description: Quels types de sociétés et d’organisations du territoire ont-ils précédé l’État en Europe de l’Antiquité au xxe siècle ? Cet ouvrage s’efforce de répondre à cette question en s’appuyant sur des exemples précis et en utilisant des comparaisons extérieures à l’Europe. De petites unités territoriales, en général gérées par groupes de parenté (tribus et clans) ou des associations de voisinage, dans lesquelles des hommes libres, propriétaires et guerriers représentaient la majorité de la population, semblent avoir constitué un type fréquent. Des différences sociales plus ou moins importantes existaient entre ces derniers, mais des formes de démocratie primitive se rencontraient aussi, et la vengeance par le sang était un droit souvent reconnu aux membres de ces groupes. L’acquisition du monopole de la violence dite « légitime » par les États fut un aspect important de la transformation de ces sociétés, qui se traduisit aussi par des transformations dans les territoires. Mais des éléments de ces formes anciennes d’organisation de la société et du territoire subsistèrent parfois longtemps dans des États déjà organisés. Cet essai met aussi en perspective certains points de vue récents sur la classification des sociétés et leur évolution, et contribue au débat actuel sur les fondements de l’identité européenne.
