    Description: Employing methodological perspectives from the fields of political geography, environmental studies, anthropology, and their cognate disciplines, this volume explores alternative logics of sentient landscapes as racist, xenophobic, and right-wing. While the field of sentient landscapes has gained critical attention, the literature rarely seems to question the intentionality of sentient landscapes, which are often romanticized as pure, good, and just, and perceived as protectors of those who are powerless, indigenous, and colonized. The book takes a new stance on sentient landscapes with the intention of dispelling the denial of “coevalness” represented by their scholarly romanticization.

    Description: In the last forty years anthropologists have made major contributions to understanding the heterogeneity of reproductive trends and processes underlying them. Fertility transition, rather than the story of the triumphant spread of Western birth control rationality, reveals a diversity of reproductive means and ends continuing before, during, and after transition. This collection brings together anthropological case studies, placing them in a comparative framework of compositional demography and conjunctural action. The volume addresses major issues of inequality and distribution which shape population and social structures, and in which fertility trends and the formation and size of families are not decided solely or primarily by reproduction. In this chapter, I address these questions in relation to the Counting Souls Project1 through two frameworks described by Kreager and Bochow in the introduction to this volume.

Despite reforms and advertising campaigns, from the late '80s, Swiss transplant medicine began to lament an increasing mistrust in organ donation and falling donor numbers. Simon Hofmann throws light on the role of doctors, nurses, family members and donees, but also of the media, politicians and the pharmaceutical industry. In doing so, he draws out the relations between hospital practices, public debates, and fictitious narratives about organ smuggling. He tells a complex and contradictory story of modern biomedicine at the edge of life and death, which is shaped as much by economic calculations as by utopian hope and traumatic fears.

    Description: From the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s West German foreign policy underwent substantial transformations: from bilateral to multilateral, from reactive to proactive. The Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) was an ideal setting for this evolution, enabling the Federal Republic to take the lead early on in Western preparations for the conference and to play a decisive role in the actual East–West negotiations leading to the Helsinki Final Act of 1975. Based on extensive original research of recently released documents, spanning more than fifteen archives in eight countries, this study is a substantial contribution to scholarly discussions on the history of détente, the CSCE and West German foreign policy. The author stresses the importance of looking beyond the bipolarity of the Cold War decades and emphasizes the interconnectedness of European integration and European détente.

The focus is on trade union contacts before 1989, the phases of upheaval and unification, the work of the Treuhandanstalt and tariff policy. The effects of the transformation process are also elaborated.
    Description: Die Rolle der Gewerkschaften im Prozess der deutschen Einheit fand bislang wenig Beachtung. Dabei gehörten sie von Anfang an zu den Kräften, die die gesellschaftliche und wirtschaftliche Transformation Ostdeutschlands mitgestalteten. In den Beiträgen des Bandes betrachten Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler sowie ehemals Aktive aus Ost und West – ausgehend von ihren jeweils unterschiedlichen Perspektiven – die Möglichkeiten, Erfolge und Grenzen gewerkschaftlicher Politik und gewerkschaftlichen Handelns. Im Fokus stehen gewerkschaftliche Kontakte vor 1989, die Phasen von Umbruch und Vereinigung, die Arbeit der Treuhandanstalt und die Tarifpolitik. Herausgearbeitet werden dabei auch die Nachwirkungen des Transformationsprozesses.

In den naturwissenschaftlichen Museen konnte dieses neue Wissen mit einem breiten Publikum verhandelt und etabliert werden. Anhand der Geschichte der naturhistorischen Sammlungen in Basel vollzieht Flavio Häner nach, wie aus dieser Zeit nicht nur neue wissenschaftliche Disziplinen hervorgingen, sondern eine Gesellschaft entstand, in der Fragen über die Natur nicht mehr mit einem Verweis auf die biblische Schöpfungsgeschichte beantwortet werden konnten.
