Description: What are the effects of internal migration controls on migrants without a regular residence permit – on “sans papiers”? The book gives an answer to this question with a comparative study of the United States and Germany. Based on expert interviews and in-depth interviews with forty sans papiers, police controls as well as controls in areas such as labor market, health care, housing, schooling and childcare are carefully analysed. The book discusses whether global economic, political or social processes have restricted the ability of advanced capitalist countries to control migration. It argues that migration policy in the OECD countries has become more similar, but this convergence only takes place at the level of policy goals and legal norms. At the level of implementation, national differences persist. The interviews show that sans papiers in the U.S. continue to have many possibilities to participate in society. In contrast, the comprehensive exclusion of sans papiers in Germany confi rms that there is no general “loss of control”.
Description: Welche Auswirkungen haben interne Migrationskontrollen auf Migrantinnen und Migranten ohne regulären Aufenthaltsstatus - auf »Sans Papiers«?

Description: The inclusion of works in a canonical list creates a large body of exclusions. But among these neglected works there are not a few that nevertheless are worth reading. Literary worth is not necessarily aesthetic impeccability. A literary work recommends itself by a high degree of artistic achievement with elbowroom for historical importance. The present study focuses on Leo Rosten’s immigration novel The Education of Hyman Kaplan (1937) and Archibald MacLeish’s radio play Air Raid (1938). The first is more than the apparent compendium of language-based jokes. Read in the context of immigration policy from Presidents Theodore Roosevelt to F. D. Roosevelt and of Jewish-American humor, it displays Kaplan’s moral and intellectual growth, which extant commentary denies, and exhibits the “interior internationality” of an immigration country. Air Raid is one of the few achieved American radio plays to take a stand on foreign affairs in a context that does not only consist of broadcasting and Picasso’s collage-painting Guernica – the “screaming picture” which MacLeish transposed into the acoustic medium – but also of the historical saturation bombing of the Basque town.

Description: Taking media scholar Henry Jenkins’s concept of ‘convergence culture’ and the related notions of ‘participatory culture’ and ‘transmedia storytelling’ as points of departure, the essays compiled in the present volume provide terminological clarification, offer exemplary case studies, and discuss the broader implications of such developments for the humanities. Most of the contributions were originally presented at the transatlantic conference 〈i〉Convergence Culture Reconsidered〈/i〉 organized by the editors at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Germany, in October 2013. Applying perspectives as diverse as literary, cultural, and media studies, digital humanities, translation studies, art history, musicology, and ecology, they assemble a stimulating wealth of interdisciplinary and innovative approaches that will appeal to students as well as experts in any of these research areas.

Description: The Bologna Process, whose objective is the creation of an „European Higher Education Area“, should be concluded in 2010. In the last years the reactions ranged from total rejection over a more temporising attitude to clear and unambiguous affirmation. Hence, the „Fachverband Deutsch als Fremdsprache“ (FaDaF – association for German as a foreign language) has accepted the challenge to enter on the level of science policy the discussion about the higher education structural reforms as far as the subject of German as a Foreign Language (DaF) is concerned. With the help of reports on the current situation and the future of the DaF degree programmes in various European countries, contributions regarding the crucial problems of the higher education structural reforms and a position paper about the curricular basis of the BA/MA degree programmes in the field of German as a foreign language, the basic parameters of the ongoing restructuring in this subject are discussed here.

Description: St Martin of Tours is one of Christianity’s major saints and his significance reaches far beyond the powerful radiance of his iconic act of charity. While the saint and his cult have been researched comprehensively in Germany and France, his cult in the British Isles proves to be fairly unexplored. Andre Mertens closes this gap for Anglo-Saxon England by editing all the age’s surviving texts on the saint, including a commentary and translations. Moreover, Mertens looks beyond the horizon of the surviving body of literary relics and dedicates an introductory study to an analysis of the saint’s cult in Anglo-Saxon England and his significance for Anglo-Saxon culture.

Description: Latin America and the German-speaking countries of Central Europe have for a long time maintained multifaceted and dynamic relations. This close interaction has also had a significant impact on the history and present of institutional Germanic studies in Latin America. There are, however, country-specific differences: while in the case of some locations there is only a rudimentary area of Germanic Studies, in others it is quite broadly established. The main purpose of this volume is to trace the existing diversity. The idea for the publication emerged during the 16th Congress of the Latin American Association of Germanists (ALEG) in Buenos Aires in December 2017. Within the framework of the section "History of Germanic Studies", the need for an anthology with contributions in German became evident, in which the developments and perspectives of Germanic studies in the various Latin American countries and regions are reviewed and discussed. Academics from across Latin America agreed to share insights and findings on the aims and foci of Germanic studies for the book project to be realized. Since the institutional framework of the discipline varies widely in Latin America, the initiators assume a broad concept of Germanic studies that encompasses the teaching and research of literary and cultural studies, as well as linguistic and translation studies, teacher training and the teaching of the German language itself. The anthology combines a total of 22 articles from eleven countries, written by 39 authors, and thus provides a broad and diverse view of the situation of Germanistic studies in Latin America. It includes overviews and analyses from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Description: The present dissertation addresses the manifold legal aspects of the administrative and constitutional problems of accreditation in german institutions of higher education. Issues are raised in respect to well-known questions concerning the legal nature of accreditation, as well as to the related encroachment upon fundamental rights. Furthermore, new challenges such as system accreditation and the seldom debated issues concerning the contractual relationships of the involved parties, or the democratic legitimation of the accreditation administration and the legal nature of its decisions are discussed. The study also draws comparisons to similarly structured areas of law - in so doing, further questions of modernisation in higher education, the debate surrounding privatisation and legal aspects of the administrative organisation are commented on.

Description: Did King Alfred the Great commission the Old English translation of Bede’s Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum, probably the masterpiece of medieval Anglo-Latin Literature, as part of his famous program of translation to educate the Anglo-Saxons? Was the Old English Historia, by any chance, a political and religious manifesto for the emerging ‘Kingdom of the Anglo-Saxons’? Do we deal with the literary cornerstone of a nascent English identity at a time when the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms were threatened by a common enemy: the Vikings? Andreas Lemke seeks to answer these questions – among others – in his recent publication. He presents us with a unique compendium of interdisciplinary approaches to the subject and sheds new light on the Old English translation of the Historia in a way that will fascinate scholars of Literature, Language, Philology and History.
Description: Entstand die altenglische Übersetzung der Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum des Beda Venerabilis, des wohl bedeutendsten anglo-lateinischen Werkes des Mittelalters, auf Bestreben König Alfreds ‚des Großen‘ als Teil seines Übersetzungs- und Bildungsprogrammes?

Description: This volumes deals with the presentations and debates from the guest lecture series on the occasion of the "European Year of Intercultural Dialogue" 2008 at the Göttingen University.

Description: The essays by Klaus Düwel on German studies collected in this volume have been published for a period of around 40 years. They reveal that Düwel - in addition to Runology and Nordic studies - has also made German studies in its entirety his object of research. Philological accuracy, comparative readings and the question of the function characterize the analysis of the Middle High German texts from the 'Merseburger Zaubersprüche' to 'Reynke de Vos' and Luther. In addition, contributions to the history of reception in the Middle Ages have been included in this volume, which show quotations, discussions or reinterpretations of medieval artifacts, motifs, texts or heroic figures in modern times.

Description: 2014 and 2016, marked by the 450th anniversary of his birthday and the 400th anniversary of his demise respectively, have both been dedicated to the remembrance of William Shakespeare and the celebration of his work through readings, theater productions, movies, exhibitions, and many academic events. He is fondly called the “Bard” by many and has long been England's export hit. Shakespeare gained lasting fame and fortune during his lifetime not only by successfully moving his audience, but also because from the beginning his work inspired critical and artistic dialogue. The ingenuity and uniqueness of his work did not fail to inspire the creative imagination of successive generations of authors, artists, and musicians over the past four and a half centuries. In fact, each generation has reimagined and recreated Shakespeare in its own different way, bringing its own interpretation, themes, fashion, taste, and customs to the rereading, visualization, and intonation of his work. The brand “Shakespeare” is still as popular and productive as ever. A fact that is apparent not only in the huge numbers of visitors yearly to Stratford upon Avon and Verona, the city of Shakespeare's tragic-romance Romeo and Juliet, but also in the long line of movies produced based on his plays each year. One might even go as far as to assert that it is the generations of productive readers and their own unique creative interpretations that have kept the Bard alive over the past 450 years. This collection of essays celebrates Shakespeare’s two big anniversaries and takes the opportunity to look at him from a different perspective, as a source of inspiration and, for a change, to explore the eclectic results of centuries of productive reception of his work from the Elizabethan era up to the 21rst century.

Description: This study consists of two parts. The first part offers an overview of feminism’s theory of differences. The second part deals with the textual analysis of poems about ‘mothering’ by women from India, the Caribbean and Africa. Literary criticism has dealt with the representation of ‘mothering’ in prose texts. The exploration of lyrical texts has not yet come. Since the late 1970s, the acknowledgement of and the commitment to difference has been foundational for feminist theory and activism. This investigation promotes a differentiated, ‘locational’ feminism (Friedman). The comprehensive theoretical discussion of feminism’s different concepts of ‘gender’, ‘race’, ‘ethnicity’ and ‘mothering’ builds the foundation for the main part: the presentation and analysis of the poems. The issue of ‘mothering’ foregrounds the communicative aspect of women’s experience and wants to bridge the gap between theory and practice. This study, however, does not intend to specify ‘mothering’ as a universal and unique feminine characteristic. It underlines a metaphorical use and discusses the concepts of ‘nurturing’, ‘maternal practice’ and ‘social parenthood’. Regarding the extensive material, this study understands itself as an explorative not concluding investigation placed at the intersections of gender studies, postcolonial and classical literary studies. Most of all, it aims at initiating a dialogue and interchange between scholars and students in the Western and the ‘Third World’.

Description: The firms and markets of today's complex socio-economic system developed in a spontaneous process termed evolution, in just the same way as the universe, the solar system, the Earth and all that lives upon it. Darwin's theory of evolution clearly demonstrated that evolution involved increasing organization. As we began to explore the molecular basis of life and its evolution, it became equally clear that it depended on the processing and communication of information. This book develops a consistent theory of evolution in its wider sense, examining the information based laws and forces that drive it. Exploring subjects as diverse as economics and the theories of thermodynamics, the author revisits the paradox of the apparent conflict between the laws of thermodynamics and evolution to arrive at a systems theory, tracing a continuous line of evolving information sets that connect the Big-Bang to the firms and markets of our current socio-economic system.

Description: The extensive collection of correspondences of Elisabeth Charlotte, Duchesse d’Orléans (known as Liselotte von der Pfalz), sister-in law of Louis XIV, is one of the few remaining sources with exceptional insight into the life at the court of the Sun King. Her letters contain numerous lively and witty descriptions of the appearances and bodily practices of the contemporaries she met there – descriptions that range from subtle anecdotes to scatological jokes. Especially the latter, sometimes paired with strong language, have led various scholars to believe that her writing style was not in accordance with the refined communication culture at the court. The perception of Liselotte’s writing style, characterized by literary and theatrical allusions, repartee, and a tendency towards detailed description of courtly life, seems to be dominated by a stereotypical classification of Liselotte as a “unrefined German” contrasted with the gallantry of the French. This study contradicts this assumption by analysing whether and to what extent the writing about the body in Liselotte’s letters follows the rules described in the handbooks on courtly communication of the Early Modern Period.

Description: In the context of testing and examination, the assessment of texts presents a particular challenge. Since textual competence cannot be measured directly, it is assessed indirectly via textuality criteria. In the field of foreign language testing, a target-oriented text production is set as a task; this is also the case in the DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang = German Language Test for University Entrance). DSH text productions are evaluated by means of an analytical evaluation sheet with textuality criteria and in case of passing the exam reported in three levels: DSH-1, DSH-2 and DSH-3. This paper deals with an investigation conducted on DSH text productions to determine which textuality criteria are characteristic for each DSH.

Description: In recent years, the areas of German as a Foreign Language (GFL) and German as a Second Language (GSL) have taken quite different developmental paths. To unify these contrasts was the purpose of the 46th Annual Convention of the Association for German as a Foreign and a Second Language (FaDaF e.V.) in Chemnitz from 28 to 30 March 2019. The proceedings of this conference comprise contributions from both academic research and practice in the area of teaching German as a Foreign or Second Language as well as the Associations’ resolution concerning the recent German Immigration Act for Skilled Workers. Thematically, the contributions focus on didactics and methodology of German language teaching, transnational networking and the many facets of understanding – from language comprehension to (intercultural) hermeneutics. Opening with contributions from the young academics’ conference held prior to the annual convention, the volume Teaching – Networking – Understanding attempts to unify the many interfaces of research and practice.

Description: By the 1920s and early 1930s the dime novel had already become well established as a medium for serial fiction and it developed innovative ways of shaping the temporality of literary communication: Recurring heroes made an appearance in more than one dime novel series at the same time, some even across media; publishers and writers found collective forms of text production not aiming to create one timeless work of art, but a continuous series of texts; readers learned to orient themselves with competing publishing schedules of different media and to comprehend the text world of a dime novel series by connecting a series of texts. The book deals with the question of how publishers, writers and readers shaped ‚seriality‘ in the process of creating the fictional worlds of dime novels.

Description: 21 articles give insights into German Studies outside the German-speaking countries. The contributions cover as wide a range as reports country by country, descriptions of individual profiles and local study plans, conceptual cross-country approaches and analyses of specific aspects of general relevance. In all their diversity, the articles demonstrate, besides the basic consensus that German and Germany are to be taught as manifestations of another culture, further similarities: Almost without exception German studies have entered a transitional phase that is not only characterized by curriculum reforms but also by discussions about the identity of German studies themselves. Here, the practical orientation seems to be a central point since, more and more, German Studies are seen as a professional education, too.

Description: Hermann Hesse erlangte von Beginn seines literarischen Schaffens an viel Beachtung.

Description: Municipal and regional cross-border cooperation has already been common practice for a long time. This is shown by numerous existing Euroregions along the German border. The particular feature of this kind of cooperation is the participation of local and regional authorities of different states, which are separated by a national border. The judicial challenge is to legally overcome the national boundary in order to transform a mere partnership into an effective cooperation. This treatise outlines the existing instruments to implement such cooperation for German municipal authorities within their sphere of jurisdiction. Several questions are discussed: Are local authorities entitled to enter a transnational contract and if so, to what extent? What possibilities are offered by the German Constitution and existing umbrella agreements, and what is the relevance of the achievement of the European Regulation on a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation? Furthermore, the important issue of transnational joint performance of exercising state authority as well as aspects of cross-border economic activities of local authorities are discussed.

Description: The debate on universals has been stimulated by advances in cultural studies and the humanities in general. Considering literature as a universal feature that can be found in any culture, the question is: a) what are the characteristics of literature as an anthropological constant? b) which specific occurrences of literature can be found in different times, cultures and languages – and how is it possible to compare them? c) How has literature been able to mediate over time between different cultures and their often opposing concepts? The wide field of literature transgressing and bridging borders comes into play here, e.g. translations, multilingual and “intercultural” literatures, travel journals and ethnographic interpretations. The main part of the anthology highlights the interplay of cultural impregnation and a universal motivation to express oneself by means of literature – by theoretical approaches as well as by studies with a view on German literature from the outside and/or a focus on the representation of the world in German literary texts. The closing chapter, “intercultural text workshop” enables the reader to gain insight into an ever more important feature of present-day literature: texts from authors who deliberately opted for German as their literary language - Marica Bodrožić, Tzveta Sofronieva, Yoko Tawada, José F.A. Oliver and Ilija Trojanow

Description: Daily devotionals exploring spiritual themes in Harry Potter, youth pastors giving sermons wearing Jedi robes, missionary groups using Bilbo's journey to share the Gospel of Christ: There is apparently a high level of interest within the Christian community to engage with popular culture. This applies in particular to fictional works dealing with the supernatural or fantastic otherworlds. The aim of this study is to show how fantasy literature can be used in modern society to articulate religious themes. The focus lies on Christian literature such as devotional books and didactic resources for ministry addressing Christian readers in Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. By analysing Christian literature reflecting Harry Potter, His Dark Materials and Left Behind (works of fantasy that strongly differ in their engagement with religious themes) this thesis shows how Christian teachers, apologists, writers and speakers create biblical analogies and use (religious) archetypes to build a bridge between the narratives of popular culture, Christian tradition and the reader’s personal story.

Description: The late Chinese scholar Ji Xianlin has influenced the image of Germany for generations of Chinese relevant until today. About his time in Göttingen from 1935 1945 he wrote in the 80's a book in which he draws, in spite of negative experiences during the Nazi dictatorship, a differentiated picture of Germany and the Gottingen science. This led to a sharp increase in the number of Chinese students in Göttingen up to 400 in 2008.

Description: E. M. Forster first encountered Billy Budd in 1926. Some twenty years later, he embarked on a collaboration with Benjamin Britten and Eric Crozier, adapting Melville’s novella for the opera stage. The libretto they produced poignantly reaffirms the Forsterian creed of salvation through personal relationships. This study presents an extensive exploration of Forster’s involvement in the interpretation, transformation and re-creation of Melville’s text. It situates the story of the Handsome Sailor in the wider context of Forster’s literary oeuvre, his life, and his life writings. In detailed readings, Billy Budd becomes a lens through which the themes, patterns and leitmotifs of Forsterian thought and creative imagination are brought into focus. A close re-examination of the libretto sketches serves to shed new light on the collaborative process in which Melville’s story was changed to fit an archetypal array of plot and character types that is central to Forster’s own storytelling.

Description: The contributions of this book are the results of a conference of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in March 2011. The underlying consideration was simple: In language teaching and cultural studies, media are essential - why not resort to historical sources? They can be used in many ways, have a high recognition value and offer innumerable points of contact to the topics of regional and media studies. First, relevant experts present the most important collections and portals on the Internet and enter into the question of the informative and practical value of historical sources. The second part deals in a more detailed manner with aural sources, movies, political cartoons and posters as well as street names and texts of worker literature.
Description: Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes gehen auf eine Fachtagung des Deutschen Akademischen Austauschdienstes (DAAD) im März 2011 zurück.

Description: This work deals with intertextual theories and investigates narrative texts (by Wieland, Novalis, Chamisso, Storm, Andersen and Thomas Mann) from the Enlightenment of the 18th century to Classical Modernism of the early 20th century. In addition to the fairytale requisites, the less obvious fairytale-like text structures, which show a connection between different literary genres (novella/novel and fairytale) and a confrontation between the fairytale-like and the fictitious-realistic, will also be examined. The relationship between the writing process of fairytale adaptation and literary modernity - a literary modernity that reflects a social modernity characterized by its social ambivalence and plurality (modernity as a macro epoch after Anke Lohmeier and Dirk von Petersdorff) - will be shown. The six narrative texts - Die Abentheuer des Don Sylvio von Rosalva, Die Lehrlinge zu Sais, Peter Schlemihls wundersame Geschichte, Der Schimmelreiter, Peer im Glück (as an excursion and outlook into contemporary European literature) and Königliche Hoheit - with their diversity of layers of meaning are regarded as modern narrative texts and represent various milestones in the development of the concept of modernity.

Description: The articles in this anthology display the diversity of innovative approaches chosen in ongoing or concluded PhD and professorial dissertations in the field of German as a Foreign or Second language. They include studies in text comprehension research, critical needs analysis, discourse analysis, empirical didactics and analyses of the learning process in its cultural context. In line with the characteristics of the kaleidoscope, the editors do without any systematic classification of the contributions and do not claim to establish some kind of carthography of the current state of young GFL/GSL reaearch. They would rather invite the reader to look optimistically on the development of young GFL/GSL research and reflect upon the structure and the instruments of support to young GFL/GSL researchers.

Description: In the field of foreign-language teaching and learning, action-orientation is a didactic key principle. However, at present, empirical findings on how action-orientation can be pursued as a goal or put into practice as a teaching method in schools and at universities are scarce. Likewise, only little research has been conducted on the potentials and challenges of action-orientation from an academic perspective and from the perspective of teachers and learners so far. This volume provides an empirical contribution to the academic discourse on action-oriented approaches to foreign-language teaching and learning. While the volume's introduction gives an overview of the theoretical basis and empirical findings on action-orientation to date, the different contributions present individual studies in three areas: action-orientation in the teaching of foreign-language literature, action-oriented learning in global simulations and in school laboratories, and action-orientation in drama-/theatre-based foreign-language education.
