Description: Based on daily maximum temperature (Tmax), minimum temperature (Tmin), and precipitation of the Yangtze River Basin (YRB) from 1961 to 2020, we employed the trend analysis method and correlation analysis method to analyze spatiotemporal variations in 10 extreme indices and their associations with atmospheric and oceanic circulations. Results indicated that maximum Tmax (TXx), maximum Tmin (TNx), and minimum Tmin (TNn) all increased significantly, at rates of 0.19 °C, 0.19 °C, and 0.37 °C per decade, respectively, whereas minimum Tmax (TXn) did not show any significant trend. The diurnal temperature range (DTR) decreased by 0.09 °C per decade as minimum temperatures increased faster than maximum temperatures. TNx and TNn increased significantly in the majority of the YRB, but TXn showed no significant increases. TXn increased significantly in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. The DTR increased significantly in the Jinsha River Basin and the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Rx1day (maximum 1-day precipitation), SDII (Simple daily intensity index) and R99p (extremely wet-day precipitation) increased significantly, at rates of 1.12 mm, 0.09 mm, and 5.87 mm per decade, respectively, but the trends of Rx5day (maximum 5-day precipitation) and PRCPTOT (total wet-day precipitation) were not significant. However, the trends of precipitation extreme indices were not statistically significant in most of the YRB. In the future, maximum temperature and minimum temperature might increase while DTR might decrease. But, the trends of precipitation extremes in the future were ambiguous. Nearly all the extreme indices were related to the variability of Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) in the YRB. In addition, the correlations between extreme temperature indices and AMO are higher than that of extreme precipitation indices.

Description: Black carbon (BC), particularly internally mixed and aged BC, exerts a significant influence on the environment and climate. Black carbon coated by non-absorbing materials shows an enhancement of BC absorption, whereas absorptive coatings on BC can reduce the BC absorption enhancement. In this paper we use the multiple-sphere T-matrix method to accurately model the influence of the absorbing volume fraction of absorbing coatings on the reduction of the absorption enhancement of partially coated BC. The reduction of the absorption enhancement due to the absorbing coating exhibited a strong sensitivity to the absorbing volume fraction of the coating, and no reduction of BC absorption enhancement was seen for BC particles with non-absorbing coatings. We found that coatings with higher absorbing volume fraction, greater coated volume fraction of BC, higher shell/core ratio, and larger coated BC particle size caused stronger reductions of the BC absorption enhancement, whereas the impact of the BC’s fractal dimension was negligible. Moreover, the sensitivity of the reduction of absorption enhancement resulting from the ratio of the absorbing coating shell to the BC core increased for coatings with higher absorbing volume fractions, higher coated volume fractions of BC, or larger particle sizes, although this effect was weaker than the sensitivities to size distribution, absorbing volume fraction of coating, and coated volume fraction of BC. Reductions in the absorption enhancements resulting from the absorbing coating for partially coated BC with various size distributions typically varied in the range of 0.0–0.24 for thin coatings with shell/core ratio of 1.5 and between 0.0 and 0.43 for thick coatings with shell/core ratio of 2.7. In addition, we propose an empirical formula relating the reduction of BC absorption enhancement to the absorbing volume fraction of the coating, which could inform a quantitative understanding and further applications. Our study indicates the significance of the absorbing volume fraction of coatings on the absorption properties of BC.

Description: Currently, due to the global pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, new procedures and devices for effective disinfection of indoor air are of obvious interest. Various studies demonstrated quite broad ranges of the efficiency of essential oils in the control of biological aerosols. This project reports the results of investigation of the antimicrobial activity of essential oils natural for Australia (tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil and lemon myrtle) distributed by newly developed VaxiPod device for various scenarios, including bacterial, viral and fungal inactivation on various surfaces and in aerosol form. It was found that the device was capable of operating continuously over 24-h periods, providing sufficient aerosol concentration to efficiently inactivate microorganisms both on the surface and in airborne form. Twenty-four to forty-eight hours were required to achieve inactivation above 90% of most of the tested microbes on solid surfaces (stainless steel discs and agar plates), whilst similar efficiency of inactivation on fibrous filter surface as well as in aerosol form was achieved over 30–60 min of the process run. The results look very promising for further development of bioaerosol inactivating procedures and technologies for air quality control applications.

Description: The long-term sustainability of fractures within rocks determines whether it is reasonable to utilize such formations as potential EGS reservoirs. Representative for reservoirs in Variscan metamorphic rocks, three long-term (one month each) fracture permeability experiments on saw-cut slate core samples from the Hahnenklee well (Harz Mountains, Germany) were performed. The purpose was to investigate fracture permeability evolution at temperatures up to 90 °C using both deionized water (DI) and a 0.5 M NaCl solution as the pore fluid. Flow with DI resulted in a fracture permeability decline that is more pronounced at 90 °C, but permeability slightly increased with the NaCl fluid. Microstructural observations and analyses of the effluent composition suggest that fracture permeability evolution is governed by an interplay of free-face dissolution and pressure solution. It is concluded that newly introduced fractures may be subject to a certain permeability reduction due to pressure solution that is unlikely to be mitigated. However, long-term fracture permeability may be sustainable or even increase by free-face dissolution when the injection fluid possesses a certain (NaCl) salinity.

Description: The role of cyanobacterial communities in the formation of carbonate sediments (ancient and modern) is not completely clear. We studied the cyanobacterial communities connected with carbonate sediments of the freshwater bodies feeding the historical Peterhof fountains (Saint-Petersburg, Russia). Cyanobacterial communities were studied by metagenome analysis and optical microscopy. Carbonates associated with cyanobacterial communities (both in situ and in vitro) were studied by powder X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The interconnection between the mineral composition of carbonate sediments and inhabiting microorganism species was established. The leading role of cyanobacteria in carbonate biomineralization in fresh water of Peterhof fountains water supply system was shown. Cyanobacteria of 24 genera were revealed in sediments composed of calcite and aragonite. The crystallization of carbonates on the surface of 13 species of cyanobacteria was found. Using model experiments, a significant contribution of cyanobacterial species of the Oscillatoriaceae family (Phormidium spp., Lyngbya sp., Oscillatoriaformosa) to carbonate biomineralization is demonstrated.

Description: Dust and pollution are frequently mixed together in East Asia, causing large uncertainties in assessing climate change and environmental influence and in relevant policymaking. To discern the dust effect on particle mass, we carried out long-term measurements of the mass and key chemical compositions of PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 from August 2007 to February 2012 and collected hourly data of PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations from January 2012 to October 2020 at Gosan, South Korea. The principal component analysis of measured species reveals two dominant factors, pollution and dust, accounting for 46% and 16% of the total variance, respectively. The mode distribution of PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 mass in addition to the dust events helps to provide a robust criterion of the dust impact. Dust can be identified by the mean + standard deviation (σ) of PM10, while the threshold is down to the mean concentration when dust particles experience precipitation. High PM2.5 concentration also presents dust impact; however, the criterion decreases from mean + σ in 2007–2012 to mean in 2012–2020. It indicates that dust is no longer a high-concentration event of PM2.5, but its influence gradually appears in low-concentration particles. Therefore, the dust criterion obtained from long-term PM10 concentration data is robust; however, the standard is based on PM2.5 changes over time and still needs to be determined by follow-up long-term observations.

Description: All cities globally are growing considerably as they are experiencing an intensive urbanization process that leads to high soil consumption and pollution of environmental components. For this reason, cities are required to adopt measures to reduce these impacts and tree planting has been suggested as a cost-effective strategy. In our study, we implemented for the first time in a Southern Caucasus city the i-Tree Eco model to quantify the main ecosystem services provided by urban forests. Trees in two parks in Tbilisi, EXPO Park (694 trees) and RED Park (1030 trees), have been measured, and a model simulation was performed for the year 2018. These green infrastructures store large amounts of carbon in their woody tissues (198.4 t for EXPO Park and 126.5 t for RED Park) and each year they sequester 4.6 and 4.7 t of CO2 for EXPO Park and RED Park. They also remove 119.6 and 90.3 kg of pollutants (CO, NO2, O3, PM2.5, SO2), and reduce water runoff of 269.5 and 200.5 m3, respectively. This analysis highlights the key role of urban forests in improving the environmental sustainability of the city of Tbilisi and provides important decision support for tree species selection in this geographic area.

Description: Manganese ore reduction is quite complex at intermediate reaction temperatures of 1100 –1400 °C due to the formation of liquid oxide and/or alloy phases in varying phase proportions and distributions. Evidence in the literature shows that MnO reduction rates are higher for manganese ores of higher iron mineral content. This is due to a lowering of the manganese activity in the presence of iron and carbon in the alloy. Consequently, the minimum required temperature for carbothermic reduction of MnO is lowered. The simplification of the complex ore reduction system is achieved by reacting pure MnO with carbon instead of using gangue-containing ore. The effect of variation in the %C in the alloy product has not been well quantified in previous works. Here the complete alloy phase analyses are used to clarify the role of metallic iron added to MnO-Fe-C compressed pellets reacted at 1100 and 1200 °C. The phase chemistry analyses show that the alloy compositions follow a polynomial curve in %Mn vs. %C plots, with alloy phase compositions formed internal to the MnO particles containing lower %Mn (

Description: Mechanical twins are common microstructures in deformed calcite. Calcite twins have been used for a long time as indicators of stress/strain orientations and magnitudes. Developments during the last decade point toward significant improvements of existing techniques as well as new applications of calcite twin analysis in tectonic studies. This review summarises the recent progress in the understanding of twin formation, including nucleation and growth of twins, and discusses the concept of CRSS and its dependence on several factors such as strain, temperature and grain size. Classical and recent calcite twin measurement techniques are also presented and their pros and cons are discussed. The newly proposed inversion techniques allowing for the use of calcite twins as indicators of orientations and/or magnitudes of stress and strain are summarized. Benefits for tectonic studies are illustrated through the presentation of several applications, from the scale of the individual tectonic structure to the continental scale. The classical use of calcite twin morphology (e.g., thickness) as a straightforward geothermometer is critically discussed in the light of recent observations that thick twins do not always reflect deformation temperature above 170–200 °C. This review also presents how the age of twinning events in natural rocks can be constrained while individual twins cannot be dated yet. Finally, the review addresses the recent technical and conceptual progress in calcite twinning paleopiezometry, together with the promising combination of this paleopiezometer with mechanical analysis of fractures or stylolite roughness.

Description: Building typification is of theoretical interest and practical significance in map generalization. It aims to transform an initial set of buildings to a subset, while maintaining the essential distribution characteristics and important individual buildings. This study focuses on buildings located in residential suburban or rural areas and generalizes them to medium or small scale, for which the typification process can be viewed as point-similar object selection that generates exemplars in local building clusters. From this view, we propose a novel building typification approach using affinity propagation exemplar-based clustering. Based on a sparse graph constructed on the input building set, the proposed approach considers all buildings as potential cluster exemplars and keeps passing messages between those objects; thus, high-quality representative objects (i.e., exemplars) of the initial building set can be obtained and further outputted as the typified result. Experiments with real-life building data show that the proposed method is superior to the two existing representative methods in maintaining the overall distribution characteristics. Meanwhile, the importance of each individual building and the constraints of the road network can be embedded flexibly in this method, which gives some advantages in terms of preserving important buildings and the local structural distribution along the road, etc.
