    Beschreibung: Against the background of the Ürümchi riots (July 2009), this book provides a longitudinal study of contemporary Uyghur identities and Uyghur-Han relations. Previous studies considered China’s Uyghurs from the perspective of the majority Han (state or people). Conversely, The Art of Symbolic Resistance considers Uyghur identities from a local perspective, based on interviews conducted with group members over nearly twenty years. Smith Finley rejects assertions that the Uyghur ethnic group is a ‘creation of the Chinese state’, suggesting that contemporary Uyghur identities involve a complex interplay between long-standing intra-group socio-cultural commonalities and a more recently evolved sense of common enmity towards the Han. This book advances the discipline in three senses: from a focus on sporadic violent opposition to one on everyday symbolic resistance; from state to ‘local’ representations; and from a conceptualisation of Uyghurs as ‘victim’ to one of ‘creative agent’.

    Beschreibung: The Archive of the Sacromonte Abbey in Granada preserves a historical treasure: Arabic texts on a sheet of parchment and on numerous small tablets of lead, which were discovered in Granada at the end of the sixteenth century in the tower of the old Friday Mosque and in caves of the "Valparaíso" hillock, from then on called "Sacromonte". They became the object of heated discussions in Europe and were condemned by the Pope in 1682. The texts are among the very last literary productions of the Moriscos, the Andalusi Muslims, many of whom continued to practice Islam in secret until their expulsion from Spain between 1609 and 1614. With the permission of the archbishop of Granada, we offer, for the first time in history, a study, edition, translation, and images of all the tablets and shed new light on the fascinating religious messages of these enigmatic texts and their authors.

    Beschreibung: What would an alternative to contemporary capitalism look like? In this book, Geert Reuten sets out a detailed design of a democratic society organised in worker cooperatives, followed by an equally detailed democratic transition to it, thereby making a convincing case. In Reuten’s design, Workers constitute the single economic class. However, unlike in capitalism, there is no class that owns the means of production. The legal structure of worker cooperatives is such that workers have full rights to the fruits of the cooperative without owning it, and yet the state does not own the cooperatives either. Interestingly, worker councils in the economic and state domains vote on all economically relevant matters. In Reuten’s work, the free choice of occupation and of specific consumer goods is even larger than in capitalism.

    Beschreibung: Franz Rosenzweig ist bei uns - bedingt durch die nationalsozialistische Judenverfolgung - immer noch ein weitgehend Unbekannter. Dabei hatte er allein schon mit seinem zweibändigen Werk "Hegel und der Staat" (1920) wesentlich zur Neubelebung der gesellschafts- und geschichtsphilosophischen Diskussion beigetragen. Umwälzender ist jedoch der existenzphilosophische Neuansatz, den Rosenzweig mit seinem Hauptwerk "Der Stern der Erlösung" (1921) vorlegte. Es ist dies nicht nur eines der bedeutenden theologischen Werke des 20. Jahrhunderts, dessen Herausforderung - wenn auch verspätet - von den christlichen Kirchen heute mehr und mehr erkannt und aufgenommen wird, sondern das ihm zugrunde liegende Neue Denken ist auch in fundamentaltheologischer Hinsicht von einschneidender Bedeutung. An der kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Deutschen Idealismus gereift, wirft Rosenzweig die grundlegenden Fragen nach der negativen Begrenztheit unseres Denkens, dem existentiellen Grund unseres Daseins, nach dessen Zeitlichkeit und Sprachlichkeit sowie nach dem Anderen und dem Wir der Gemeinschaft auf - Fragen, die auch heute noch die philosophische Gegenwartsdiskussion bestimmen. Den vorliegenden Studien geht es um eine einführende Vergegenwärtigung der Existenzphilosophie Rosenzweigs von unterschiedlichen Aspekten her. sie versuchen sich dem Neuen Denken Rosenzweigs vor allem vom Entstehungskontext aus den Gesprächen mit den Freunden - Hans Ehrenberg, Eugen Rosenstock, Martin Buber - zu nähern. ihr Ziel ist jedoch kein philosophiegeschichtliches, sondern die Vermittlung der existentiellen Fragen Rosenzweigs an uns.

    Beschreibung: The study focuses on the implicit image of pupils being constructed within a certain pedagogical and didactical context as well as its influence on pedagogical approaches and didactical choices. Analysing and de-constructing implicitly constructed images of pupils is suggested as a promising tool to contribute to a higher level of self-reflective elements in Religious Education praxis and theory. Diese Untersuchung verfolgt das Ziel, die Kategorie des Schülerbildes in den religionspädagogischen Diskurs einzuführen. Es wird gefragt, inwiefern konstruktivistisch geprägte Erkenntnisprozesse nicht auch hinsichtlich der – bislang vernachlässigten – Frage, wie Religionspädagog:innen in Theorie und Praxis über Schüler:innen denken und welches implizite Schülerbild somit meist unbewusst konstruiert wird, eine Rolle spielen. Im Sinne einer Heuristik werden Dimensionen herausgearbeitet, die den Konstruktionsprozess eines Schülerbildes maßgeblich mitbeeinflussen. Es wird untersucht, inwiefern ein Schülerbild im Kontext religionspädagogischer und -didaktischer Vollzüge wirksam ist und daher als ein Impetus zur Selbstreflexion wahrgenommen werden sollte. Zu diesem Zweck werden ausgewählte religionspädagogische Entwürfe hinsichtlich ihres jeweiligen Schülerbildes analysiert und die religionspädagogische Bedeutung des Schülerbildes anhand einer fünffachen Kategorisierung konkretisiert.

    Beschreibung: Das Buch bringt aus dem Nachlass Josef Königs die Texte dreier akademischer Vorträge von 1937, 1952 und 1958 sowie eine umfangreiche Vortragsgrundlage zur philosophischen Situation 1934 in Deutschland mit Blick auf Heidegger, Jaspers und Klages. Diese Arbeit zur Lage der Philosophie und insbesondere zur allgemeinen Bestimmung der Existenzphilosophie ergänzt und erweitert Königs Darlegungen zur „offenen Unbestimmtheit“ des Heideggerschen Existenzbegriffs, die aus dem Nachlass im Dilthey-Jahrbuch 1990/1991 erschienen sind. Intensive Beispieldiskussionen und Einzelanalysen gelten vor allem den Prinzipien der Existenzphilosophie und der Struktur ihrer leitenden Begriffe. Im Vortrag „Bemerkungen zur Metapher“ (1937) entfaltet König den Gedanken, dass diejenige metaphorische Rede, die nicht ein im Prinzip ersetzbares Additum zur nicht-metaphorischen ist, eine wesentliche Möglichkeit der menschlichen Sprache darstellt. Sie kommt zwar zur nicht-metaphorischen Rede hinzu, aber wesentlich hinzu und konstituiert dadurch das Einssein der Sprache. Der zweistündige Vortrag „Verantwortung in der Wissenschaft“ (1952) erörtert den Begriff von Wissenschaft in Verbindung mit dem eines wissenschaftlichen Gewissens, das „anschaffbar“ ist, und legt die Eigenart der sittlichen Natur des wissenschaftlichen Wissens dar. Im Vortrag „Probleme des Begriffs Entwicklung“ (1958) geht König der Frage nach, wie prinzipiell begriffen werden kann, dass ein Wesen, das abstammt von Wesen, denen lediglich äußere Wahrnehmung zugeschrieben werden kann, zu einem Wesen werden kann, das auch innere Wahrnehmung besitzt.

In dieser Publikation werden die erarbeiteten Projektinhalte als auch projektbezogene und fachliche Reflexionen versammelt, um das Thema in anwendungsorientierter Weise zu erfassen.

Die Macht des Seins duldet keine Gewalt des Begriffes, seine Wahrheit ist vielmehr eine Selbstoffenbarung. Ein Kommentar des Herausgebers rekonstruiert die Entwicklung dieser These und belegt anhand ausgewählter Fragestellungen deren fundamentale Bedeutung für die Philosophie Max Müllers.

This is also the case with the Militia of Montana and the Identitarian Movement. In this book, Moritz Kinskofer analyses them through the lens of strain theory and compares them in terms of the intensity of their extremism. He identifies resistance to the system, which is perceived as anomic and infiltrated by conspiracies, as central to both movements. Above all, the adaptability of conspiracy myths as well as camouflage mechanisms such as relocation to the internet along with different degrees of organisation and varying dispositions towards violence represent enormous factors that have an impact on their resilience to state persecution.

Applying a perspective of cultural trauma, this book will argue that the deportation of the people and the devastation of the temple of Jerusalem, which are often regarded as major traumatizing events in the history of ancient Judah, became remembered as such only as the result of a longer process. Die Eroberung Jerusalems durch die Babylonier 587 v.u.Z. und ihre Folgen – insbesondere das babylonische Exil – gelten allgemein als Zäsur in der Geschichte Israels. Zahlreiche biblische Texte beziehen sich auf dieses Ereignis. Das vorliegende Buch zeigt, dass sich die Erzählung der babylonischen Eroberung Jerusalems und ihrer Folgen erst im Laufe der Zeit als Leidensnarrativ in der überlieferten Form herausgebildet hat. Dieser Prozess, in dem ein gefestigtes Bild dieser Ereignisse und ihrer Bedeutung entsteht, lässt sich als Etablierung eines kulturellen Traumas beschreiben. Die letztlich dominante Trauma-Erzählung bewahrt nicht die Erinnerung der unmittelbaren (emotionalen) Auswirkung der Ereignisse. Vielmehr lässt sich zeigen, dass wesentliche Elemente der Trauma-Erzählung wie die Deportation der Bevölkerung und die Zerstörung des Tempels erst in jüngeren biblischen Texten zentral werden.

Der Wunsch ist groß, dennoch zeigt sich, dass es an der Umsetzung deutlich hapert. Hinderungsgründe und notwendige Stellschrauben können sich nicht zuletzt bei den Müttern, der Politik und den Arbeitgebern finden.

    Beschreibung: The frontiers of extraction are expanding rapidly, driven by a growing demand for minerals and metals that is often motivated by sustainability considerations. Two volumes of International Development Policy are dedicated to the paradoxes and futures of green extractivism, with analyses of experiences from five continents. In this, the second of the two volumes, the 22 authors, using different conceptual approaches and in different empirical contexts, demonstrate the alarming obduracy of the logic of extractivism, even - and perhaps especially - in the growing support for the so-called green transition. The authors highlight the complex and enduring legacies of resource extraction and the urgent need to move beyond extractive models of development towards alternative pathways that prioritise social justice, environmental sustainability, democratic governance and the well-being of both humans and non-humans. They also caution us against the assumption that anti-extraction is anti-extractivist, that post-extraction is post-extractivism, and they critically attune us to the systemic nature of extractivism in ways that both connect and transcend any particular site or scale.     Beschreibung: The art history of South Asia covers a time span of roughly four and a half thousand years. During this period, a vast number of animal stone sculptures has been produced, ranging from the pre-historic period till today and covering a great variety of motifs and imagery in different regions and religious traditions. Even so, the number of studies devoted to these animal sculptures has remained extremely limited. The present book aims at filling this knowledge gap. With this richly illustrated book, the first of its kind, Van der Geer offers a comparative study of the ways in which various animals have been depicted and a lucid analysis of the sculptors’ treatment of their “models”: living animals. The art history of sculptured animals is contextualized with a description of the use of animals as can be read from ancient texts, archaeological evidence and contemporaneous culture. In doing so, parallels as well as differences in style or iconography are highlighted, elucidating the variety of animal depictions across regions, religious contexts and through time. The corpus of discussed material ranges from Indus seals, stupa panels and railings, monumental temples from North and South India, non-religious palace and fort architecture to loose sculptures in museum collections.

    Beschreibung: In marked contrast to what has hitherto been thought the 432 titles of Digest are not an amorphous heap of quotations but have to a significant extent a rhetorical structure. The hermeneutics of the Digest have to take this into account which makes a systematic interpretation of the titles not only legitimate but even necessary. These findings entail a revision of Bluhmes ‚mass-theory‘. Dieser Band präsentiert zunächst die Morphologie der 432 Titel der Pandekten als weitgehend rhetorisch komponiert, woraufhin diese Einsicht in eine systematische Hermeneutik übersetzt wird: die Titel der Pandekten sind – auch – systematisch auszulegen. Friedrich Bluhmes Massentheorie erscheint daher richtig, aber unvollständig und beweist nicht, dass das räumliche Nacheinander der die Titel ausmachenden Leges die unabsichtliche Folge des zeitlichen Nacheinanders des Exzerpierens ist. Es scheint vielmehr die absichtliche Folge eines Kompositionsbestrebens zu sein. Bei einer konsequenten Anwendung von Bluhmes eigener Methode käme man zu dem Ergebnis, dass etwa ein Viertel der Leges nicht dort alloziert sind, wo sie theoretisch stehen müssten. Durch diese ‚Versetzungen‘ werden semantische Systeme mit den umgebenden Stellen etabliert, indem die Kompilatoren mittels der Leittextmethode in einen textlichen Hauptstrang Nebenstränge einflechten.

However, this ruling could strongly normalise assisted suicide and the elderly and very old could feel pressured to die in this way. The authors present findings from a quantitative, representative online survey of 1,200 men aged 18-69 on the prevalence of partner violence, its consequences, men's experiences with the support system and individual risk factors, and a qualitative interview study with 16 men who were interviewed in detail about their experiences. Finally, the study reports the results of an expert workshop in the form of recommendations and a special analysis of the Lower Saxony survey on partner violence among 15-year-old male adolescents.

    Beschreibung: This thesis develops a conflict of laws concept for the cross-border activities of collecting societies. De-spite the deliberate promotion of the Europeanisation of collecting societies and the increasing interna-tionalisation of their activities, this issue has so far remained unaddressed. The work first examines the problem from the perspective of private international law. In a second part, it analyses the characteristics of collecting societies in the EU internal market. The conflict-of-law rules have been developed on the basis of a function-based approach and reflect the systematic interdependence of different legal regimes controlling the activities of collecting societies. Against this background, the developed conflict-of-law rules are not only applicable in a German or European context, but can also be generalised. Where collecting society laws perform similar functions, the same principles can be directly applied.

    Beschreibung: Gegenstand der Arbeit ist die Entwicklung eines kollisionsrechtlichen Konzepts für grenzüberschreitendes Handeln von Verwertungsgesellschaften (VGs). Trotz bewusster Förderung der Europäisierung von VGs und einer zunehmenden Internationalisierung ihrer Tätigkeit blieb diese Frage bislang unbeachtet. Die Arbeit befasst sich mit der Problematik zunächst auf Ebene des Internationalen Privatrechts (IPR), um sodann Besonderheiten für VGs im EU-Binnenmarkt herauszuarbeiten. Entwickelt wurde das Kollisionsrecht auf Grundlage eines funktionsbasierten Ansatzes sowie aus den systematischen Zusammenhängen innerhalb der Querschnittsmaterie „Verwertungsgesellschaftsrecht“. Es ist insoweit verallgemeinerbar und überall dort gültig, wo die Funktionsbezüge des Verwertungsgesellschaftsrechts in entsprechender Form bestehen.

    Beschreibung: Human thinking is interpreted as strongly entrenched in a dialectical process between a primordial familiarity with things and breaks in this familiarity. This can be seen both retrospectively in Plato's ambivalent examination of literacy and prospectively in Derrida's différance. The consequences of a dissolution of that process are pointed out in the example of posthumanism. Ausgehend von ausgewählten Themen der Cognitive Science wird ein Brückenschlag erprobt zu einer Sichtweise des menschlichen Denkens, wie sie sich aus Heideggers Interpretation der menschlichen Existenz als In-der-Welt-sein herauslesen lässt. Alles, was ist, erschließt sich dem Menschen vor dem Hintergrund einer Vertrautheit mit den Dingen. Diese Vertrautheit bedarf eines Weckrufs, den Heidegger an einem Prozess der Entheimatung diagnostiziert. Verortet man das menschliche Denken in dem unauflösbaren Spannungsfeld von Vertrautheit und Unvertrautheit, so wäre der Mensch nicht dazu in der Lage, einen Zustand zu beschreiben, der einem solchen Spannungsfeld noch vorausgeht. Dies lässt sich zum einen retrospektiv an Platons zwiespältiger Auseinandersetzung mit der Schrift und zum anderen prospektiv an Derridas différance aufzeigen. Auf die Folgen einer Auflösung jenes Spannungsfeldes, abzulesen an der Verdrängung des Todes, wird am Beispiel des Posthumanismus hingewiesen.

    Beschreibung: This book is dedicated to the role of soft law in the enforcement of EU law vis-à-vis the Member States. Apart from the Treaty infringement procedure, there is an increasing number of procedures, mostly laid down in secondary law, by which the EU – often availing itself of soft law – aims at ensuring Member States’ compliance with EU law. These procedures are compared with each other, also with respect to their use of soft law, and their conformity with primary law is examined.
    Beschreibung: Diese Arbeit widmet sich der Rolle des soft law bei der Durchsetzung von Unionsrecht gegenüber den Mitgliedstaaten. Neben dem Vertragsverletzungsverfahren gibt es immer mehr, v.a. sekundärrechtlich geregelte Verfahren, mit denen die EU Rechtsdurchsetzung gegenüber den Mitgliedstaaten betreibt, oft auch mittels unverbindlicher Akte. Diese Verfahren werden, auch hinsichtlich der Verwendung von soft law, miteinander verglichen und auf ihre Primärrechtskonformität hin überprüft.

    Beschreibung: Selbstbestimmung als Problem, das sich mit menschlicher Existenz immer schon stellt, bewegt Nietzsche vom Beginn seines Philosophierens bis in die spätesten Entwürfe hinein. Unverzichtbar gehört Nietzsche in die Debatte um Reichweite und Grenzen menschlicher Autonomie, die Sokrates eröffnet. Das Beispiel Sokrates indes lehrt in den Augen des jungen Nietzsche, dass alle Versuche, Leben auf vernünftige Selbstprüfung zu gründen, scheitern müssen. Dagegen setzt der frühe Nietzsche auf Kunst und Mythos als einzig tragfähige Lebensfundamente, die er gegen Vernunft und Rationalität ausspielt. Selbstkritik jedoch lässt Nietzsche spätestens seit „Menschliches, Allzumenschliches“ in sokratischen Spuren gehen. Er entwirft eine Philosophie der Autonomie des Menschen als Philosophie seiner Individualität und radikalisiert dabei die Position Kants: die Kantische Verbindung von Autonomie und Moralität gibt er preis. Nietzsche verknüpft Autonomie mit Glück und Macht. Dennoch lässt sich auch für Nietzsche Moral als Problem nicht umgehen. Er vermag es aber nicht zu lösen und führt den späten Heidegger (wie seine postmodernen Nachfahren) dazu, Subjektivität und Autonomie des Menschen zu verabschieden. Doch der Aufgabe der Selbstbestimmung können wir gar nicht ausweichen.

    Beschreibung: Plastic credits (PCs) could be part of the solution to the global waste problem. In this book, the author investigates whether and how plastic credits can act as a bridge on the road to implementing extended producer responsibility (EPR). While PCs can be used in the short term, EPR schemes are long-lasting processes. As both mechanisms follow similar principles, it is possible that PCs can be used in the short term to optimise the handling of plastic waste and the involvement of producers and to lay the foundations for the final goal of EPR implementation. This question is addressed through a literature review and a field study of waste management in Lusaka, Zambia.
    Beschreibung: Plastic Credits (PC) könnten ein Teil der Lösung des globalen Abfallproblems sein. Die Autorin untersucht ob, und wie Plastic Credits (PC) als Brückenkonzept auf dem Weg zur Umsetzung der Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fungieren können. Während PC kurzfristig einsetzbar sind, handelt es sich bei EPR-Systemen um langwierige Prozesse. Da beide Mechanismen ähnlichen Prinzipien folgen, besteht die Möglichkeit, dass PC genutzt werden können, um kurzfristige Optimierungen im Umgang mit Kunststoffabfall und der Einbeziehung von Produzenten zu schaffen und Grundlagen für das finale Ziel der EPR-Umsetzung zu legen. Diese Fragestellung wurde anhand von Literaturrecherche sowie einer Feldstudie des Abfallmanagements in Lusaka, Sambia behandelt.

Numerous ancient Japanese myths and legends are discussed to show that the typical founding ritual was a two-phase ritual that turned the territory into a horizontal microcosm, complete with its own ‘terrestrial heaven’ inhabited by local deities. Reversing Mircea Eliade’s popular thesis, the author concludes that the concept of the human-made horizontal microcosm is not a reflection but the source of the religious concept of the macrocosm with gods dwelling high up in the sky.

    Beschreibung: Japanese is definitely one of the best-known languages in typological literature. For example, typologists often assume that Japanese is a nominative-accusative language. However, it is often overlooked that Japanese, or more precisely, Tokyo Japanese, is just one of various local varieties of the Japonic language family (Japanese and Ryukyuan). In fact, the Japonic languages exhibit a surprising typological diversity. For example, some varieties display a split-intransitive as opposed to nominative-accusative system. The present volume is thus a unique attempt to explore the typological diversity of Japonic by providing a collection of grammatical sketches of various local varieties, four from Japanese dialects and five from Ryukyuan. Each grammatical sketch follows the same descriptive format, addressing a wide range of typological topics.

    Beschreibung: Wer interpretiert, tut etwas. Dieser schlichte Umstand trat mit dem practice turn verstärkt in den Fokus hermeneutischer bzw. interpretationstheoretischer Debatten. Wo steht die Diskussion heute? Wohin soll sie sich bewegen? Als primärer Gegenstand der Hermeneutik erschien lange relativ klar eine Top-down-Reflexion auf die Natur von Erkenntnis, Verstehen und Interpretation. Das hat sich mit dem practice turn geändert. Durch diese zuerst seitens der Wissenschaftsgeschichte und der Sozialwissenschaften kultivierte Umorientierung kommt verstärkt der Bereich des konkreten Interpretationshandelns in den Blick. Die Aufmerksamkeit gilt, bottom-up, den Routinen der Bedeutungsproduktion - und dies insbesondere auch, wo die betreffenden kleinteiligen Praktiken nicht durch Methoden, sondern durch eine implizite und informelle Logik bestimmt sind. Der Sammelband lädt dazu ein, diesen produktiven turn im interdisziplinären Austausch zu bedenken und weiter voranzutreiben. Anyone who interprets does something. But it has only become a focus of hermeneutical debates since the practice turn. What is emphasized here is no longer the bottom up “nature” of understanding and interpretation, but the actual doing interpretation – especially where the practices in question are determined not by methods, but by implicit and informal logic. This volume considers where the debate is today, and where it is supposed to move.
