Description: The L08- 22 research cruise was carried out in the framework of the BMBF project: “Searching for solutions for Carbon-sequestration in coastal ecosystems” sea4soCiety with a program of sediment sampling in coastal vegetated ecosystems in the Heiligenhafen area of the German Baltic coast. Three working days between 7th and 10th of June 2022 were used to conduct multidisciplinary research within the 3 nautical miles zone east of Heiligenhafen. The first day was dedicated to Multibeam echo sound mapping to characterize seagrass meadows, sediment/seagrass deposition spots and non-vegetated reference sites in the working area. The remaining two days were used for gravity coring, optical ground truthing, bottom water sampling, and in situ physical property measurements. Sediment cores of 15-69 cm length could be recovered from 10 selected sites and porewaters were subsampled onboard from a depo-center and from a reference site. The majority of sediment cores were handed over every evening in Heiligenhafen harbour to an onshore research team from University of Oldenburg and ZMT-Bremen. The data and samples collected on the L08-22 cruise will be used to study (1) Microbial POC degradation during erosion of vegetation-rich coastal sediments, (2) To determine POC degradation rates in coastal vegetated ecosystems of the German Baltic Sea, 3) To quantify POC accumulation rates in coastal vegetated ecosystems (seagrass and saltmarshes) of the German Baltic Sea.

Description: ALKOR cruise AL567 took place as part of the EMFF (European Maritime and Fisheries Fund)‐funded project BASTA (Boost Applied munition detection through Smart data 3etection3n and AI workflows; https://www.basta‐munition.eu) and ExPloTect (Ex‐situ, near‐real‐time 3etection compound 3etection in seawater) (also EMFF‐funded). It was the continuation of the munition monitoring started within the BMBF‐ funded project UDEMM (Environmental Monitoring for the Delaboration of Munition in the Sea; https://udemm.geomar.de/). In previous cruises (POS530 MineMoni I in 2018 and AL548 MineMoni II in 2020) data was gathered for a broad baseline study in the German Baltic Sea. Within UDEMM, expertise was developed to detect, exactly locate and monitor munition (e.g. torpedoes, sea mines, ground mines) on the seafloor using optical and hydroacoustic means. In addition, chemical analyses of dissolved contaminants in the water and sediments was performed. Results indicate a moderate contamination level on regional and coastal scale, but proof higher levels of explosive‐type compounds for specific local areas. Data acquired during this cruise are used in BASTA for the development of AUV‐based and AI‐supported munition detection. On the other hand, the project ExPloTect (Ex‐situ, near‐real‐time exPlosive compound deTection in seawater) (also EMFF‐funded) addresses the need for a more effective quasi in‐situ sampling approach to detect explosive compounds in seawater on board of a ship. A prototype system was used and successfully tested for the first time during this cruise. The main focus of the cruise was placed onto the already known dumpsites Kolberger Heide and Lübeck Bight, Falshöft (Schleswig‐Holstein) and Trollegrund (Mecklenbu rg‐Vorpommern). In each area high‐ resolution multibeam mapping was performed and contact lists, indicating potential munition objects, were produced right after acquisition on board. Based on that data, AUV surveys were conducted to ground‐truth possible contacts via detailed photograph and magnetometer mapping. This was complemented with towed video profiles, SubBottom Profiler (VLIZ Institute) and towed gradiometer surveys (g‐tec SA). The transits to and between those sites were planned along former constraint routes during WWII. These routes were main targets of the British Air Force and mines and bombs can be expected along these ways. During transits water samples were taken with on a CTD‐ (conductivity, temperature, depth) rosette‐mounted Niskin bottles in regular distances, in order to obtain a comprehensive understanding of munition compounds (inter alia trinitrotoluene (TNT)) measurements across the German Baltic Sea. The cruise was supported by the 3rd Minensuchgeschwader vessel ‘Bad Rappenau’. During 2 days, work was performed in cooperation between the research vessel ALKOR and the naval unit with their AUV REMUS 100 conducting high resolution sidescan surveys over several pre‐defined targets. In addition, navy divers recovered mussel moorings for the toxicological institute of the UKSH. The pre‐planned identification of munition objects via navy divers did unfortunately fail due to low visibility conditions.

Description: The Automated and Integrated Seafloor Classification Workflow (AI-SCW) is a semi-automated underwater image processing pipeline that has been customized for use in classifying the seafloor into semantic habitat categories. The current implementation has been tested against a sequence of underwater images collected by the Ocean Floor Observation System (OFOS), in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Pacific Ocean. Despite this, the workflow could also be applied to images acquired by other platforms such as an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), or Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). The modules in AI-SCW have been implemented using the python programming language, specifically using libraries such as scikit-image for image processing, scikit-learn for machine learning and dimensionality reduction, keras for computer vision with deep learning, and matplotlib for generating visualizations. Therefore, AI-SCW modularized implementation allows users to accomplish a variety of underwater computer vision tasks, which include: detecting laser points from the underwater images for use in scale determination; performing contrast enhancement and color normalization to improve the visual quality of the images; semi-automated generation of annotations to be used downstream during supervised classification; training a convolutional neural network (Inception v3) using the generated annotations to semantically classify each image into one of pre-defined seafloor habitat categories; evaluating sampling strategies for generation of balanced training images to be used for fitting an unsupervised k-means classifier; and visualization of classification results in both feature space view and in map view geospatial co-ordinates. Thus, the workflow is useful for a quick but objective generation of image-based seafloor habitat maps to support monitoring of remote benthic ecosystems.

Additional sampling supported chemical analysis method development within the MarTERA project AMMOTRACe (Marine AMMunitiOn dump site exploration by surface‐ and underwater‐based laser mass spectrometric TRACing technology; https://www.geomar.de/en/ammotrace ). The original plan was to first work for one week in the North Sea and have a crew change after one week in Kiel and continue working in the Baltic Sea. This plan changed; ALKOR worked instead in Baltic Sea in support of for the Federal Public Prosecutor General and the Federal Police during the first week. The change of crew happened on 18th October in Kiel and the original Baltic Sea cruise was conducted as planned.

Description: The ALKOR cruise AL547 represents a concluding milestone of the Helmholtz innovation project ARCHES (Autonomous Robotic Networks to Help Modern Societies). The aim was to implement a heterogeneous robotic sensing network to simultaneously monitor changes in the water column and at the seafloor. The network has been developed by a consortium of partners from AWI, DLR, GEOMAR and the University of Kiel. The participating sensing platforms allow for real-time data transfer and the entire network shall be able to autonomously respond to environmental changes in the ocean. The network comprised seven different mobile and stationary platforms. Tests were conducted at the Mittelgrund working area in the entrance of the Eckernförde Bay (western Baltic Sea). During 47 stations the various sensing platforms were deployed and recovered for maintenance. A total of 87853 messages were sent using hydro-acoustics, of which 71734 messages contained O 2 data, 15177 were status messages, 926 messages were commands to trigger a change of the measurement behavior of a platform and 16 messages represented broadcasts about the environmental status. We synoptically recorded short-term O 2 time series on the different platforms, which were placed along a depth gradient in the working area. As the Eckernförde Bay is known for sporadic fish kills by anoxia we hope to contribute to a better understanding of the O 2 dynamics in coastal areas.

Description: The GEOMAR Helmhotz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is operating a Media Asset Management System (MAMS) which manages large amounts image- and video data. Similar systems are operated by the Helmholtz Centre HEREON and by the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI). Although the MAMS system provides access to data and metadata using an API, it is not possible to directly request image data without prior knowledge of the internal MAMS data structure. The image broker is a web service which brokers between a client (e.g. web-browser) and the MAMS. It allows users to request images by metadata values (e.g. image uuid). The broker uses the [IIIF](https://iiif.io/) standard which allows users to request the images in different formats, scaled copies or only specific parts of the image.

Description: The objective of this cruise was to establish the first order functionality of the LIGHTHOUSE system in terms of mechanics, ROV operations, electrical components and data link. This is a highly integrated suite of optical and acoustic sensors to create a real time 360° scan of an underwater environment, in order to enhance the situational awareness of pilots and mission specialists. The tests were to be conducted in the clear, deep waters of the Norwegian Sognefjord. Due to severe technical malfunctions that became only apparent during mobilization in the port of Kiel, the vessel stayed moored to the east shore and west shore quays in Kiel Harbor, except for an excursion off Boknis Eck in the Eckernförde Bight. Despite these restrictions in locality, the majority of the work programme was carried out with great success.

Description: The objective of this cruise was to conduct the final and complete field test of the LIGHTHOUSE situational awareness system for remotely operated vehicles, developed in the HVF 0068 Project LIGHTHOUSE. This included three divesof the ROV PHOCAin the Norwegian Sognefjord, during which the optical and acoustic sensors were validated. Moreover, as part of the EU H2020 project iAtlantic (grant agreement 818123), we investigated the response of pelagic deep-sea fauna to warmingand suspended sediment (which will be introduced to pelagic ecosystems by deep-sea mining activities). To this end, we captured the jellyfish Periphylla periphyllaand conducted shipboard experiments.

Description: ALKOR cruise AL548 took place as part of the EMFF (European Maritime and Fisheries Fund)-funded project BASTA (Boost Applied munition detection through Smart data inTegration and AI workflows; https://www.basta-munition.eu) and as continuation of the munition monitoring started within the BMBF-funded project UDEMM (Environmental Monitoring for the Delaboration of Munition in the Sea; https://udemm.geomar.de/). In October 2018, a first cruise (POS530 MineMoni2018) was conducted, to gather data for a broad baseline study in the German Baltic Sea. Results show a moderate contamination level on regional and coastal scale, but indicate higher levels for specific local areas. Data acquired during this cruise are used in BASTA, which aims for enhanced munition detection via AUV-based artificial intelligence applied on multi-sensor datasets. At the same time, the project ExPloTect (Ex-situ, near-real-time exPlosive compound deTection in seawater) (also EMFF-funded) addresses the need for an innovative approach to detect explosive compounds in seawater. A prototype system was used and successfully tested for the first time during this cruise. The main focus was placed onto the two already known dumpsites Kolberger Heide and Lübeck Bight. Additionally, new areas Falshöft (Schleswig-Holstein) and Cadet Channel, Trollegrund and Großklützhöved (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) were explored. In each area high-resolution multibeam mapping was performed and contact lists, indicating potential munition objects were produced on board. AUV surveys were conducted to ground-truth possible contacts via detailed photograph and magnetometer mapping. This was complemented with towed video (TV)-CTD profiles. The transits to and between those sites were planned along former constraint routes during WWII. These routes were main targets of the British Air Force and mines and bombs can be expected along these ways. During transits water samples were taken with on a CTD- (conductivity, temperature, depth) rosette-mounted Niskin bottles in regular distances, in order to obtain a comprehensive understanding munition compounds (inter alia trinitrotoluene (TNT)) measurements across the German Baltic Sea.
