Notes: Abstract Positron lifetime spectra have been measured at 77 K for KCl and Ag-doped KCl before and after x-irradiation at 77 K and after annealing at room temperature. Radiation at 77 K reduces the intensity of the intermediate lifetime (τ2) component. Radiation-induced defects were monitored optically and by ESR. The experiment shows that the changes observed in the positron decay are associated with the presence ofV K centers.

Notes: Abstract The instrument to be described is of the fast-slow coincidence type based on the well known time-to-amplitude conversion principle. Simplicity in circuit design has been achieved by using IC components. Special attention has been paid to the fast response and the temperature stability of the instrument. This fast reponse allows the omission of the pile-up limiter circuits. The temperature stability is adequate (5 psec/°C) for measurements to be made under normal laboratory conditions. Positron lifetimes were measured in both annealed and deformed copper.

Notes: Abstract The pseudopotential picture of the positron in a binary alloy is developed. It is shown that the positron is usually preferentially attracted to one sort of atom in the alloy. This relative positron affinity is associated with the positron pseudopotential difference between the different sorts of atom and calculations of this quantity are presented for a number of 50 at % alloys.

Notes: Abstract Measurements are reported of the angular correlation of annihilation radiation from polarized positrons in single crystals of Fe3O4. No change has been found in the angular correlations on passing through the metal-nonmetal phase transition. The twophoton momentum distribution, obtained by deconvolution of a set of angular correlations, displays a slight anisotropy. The spin density consists of a negative peak at zero momentum surrounded by a shell of positive density between 2 and 5 mrad. The observed spin density is probably a mixture of contributions from the moment on the ferrous ions and from the spin transfer onto the anions owing to covalency effects.

Notes: Abstract Angular correlation measurements on the fcc solid solutions of Cu−Ge and Cu−Si alloys have been carried out on single crystals with four crystallographic orientations by a crossed-slit geometry. The results on both the alloys are nearly the same. The 〈111〉-neck radius and the 〈100〉-radius of the Fermi surfaces increase almost linearly with increasing electron concentration in accord with previous results on Cu−Al and Cu−Zn alloys. The Fermi surface does not touch the square faces of the Brillouin zone at the solubility limit. The results agree fairly well with a calculation based on the sinking-conduction band model.

Notes: Abstract Positron annihilation lifetime spectra in unirradiated and γ-irradiated pure LiF and heavily doped LiF∶Mg have been resolved into three components. The intensity of the intermediate lifetime component increases in proportion to theF-center concentration for both materials until saturation occurs (≈1.4×1017 cm−3 in LiF and ≈5.7×10−17 cm−3 in LiF∶Mg). The presence of a large positive ion vacancy concentration appears to have a much smaller effect than has been observed in KCl∶Ca.

Notes: Abstract The study of defects in crystals through their interaction with thermalized positrons is usually based on the trapping model. The theoretical foundation of the trapping model, based on the theory of diffusion-limited reactions, is reviewed with particular emphasis on short-range interactions between positrons and trapping defects. For this case the analytical properties of the trapping model are developed in some detail, including the effects of the initial pair distribution on the trapping rate, the effects of detrapping, and the effects associated with more than one type of trap. The assumptions that are usually made in determinations of monovacancy formation enthalpies from positron annihilation experiments are critically discussed. The need for additional experiments capable of providing information on the temperature dependence of the various parameters involved is, stressed. As an illustration we treat in detail monovacancies with finite detrapping rate plus divacancies, both in thermal equilibrium. In the final section a few remarks are added on cases with long-range interactions between positrons and traps, such as electrically charged point-defects in insulators or semiconductors, and dislocations.

Notes: Abstract Positron lifetime spectra and angular correlation curves for seven fine-grained powders of Fe, Co, Ni, and W are analyzed. From the lifetime data, the positron diffusion constant in metals atT=300°K was found to beD +=(1.0±0.5)×10−2 cm2 sec−1. Evidence is presented that positrons are trapped in metal surface states.

Notes: Abstract The effect of electron beam irradiation on the positron annihilation in KCl, KBr, NaCl single crystals was investigated. The narrowing of the angular correlation curves increases up to the saturation value with the absorbed radiation dose. The shape of the received narrow components differs from the narrow component measured in the additively colored samples. This phenomenon shows the considerable influence of the hole centres upon the positron annihilation in ionic crystals.

Notes: Abstract A conventional positron lifetime system is described which gives data of high statistical accuracy and is especially suitable for gases at low density. Several factors contribute to the significant improvement in performance. The fraction of positrons annihilating in the gas is greatly enhanced by backscattering, and the small dimensions of the pressure vessel coupled with large plastic scintillators yields about 1200 coincidence events per second. Simple electronics are used with no side channel gating, and very clean spectra are obtained with overall resolution better than 1.5 nsec. The true start and stop pulses are counted, which enables the data to be treated by the authors' signal restoration method. The results of measurements in Ar−CO mixtures and data for H2 and D2 are presented and discussed.

Notes: Abstract Angular correlations of the annihilation photons, Compton scattered by plastic scintillators and detected by means of NaI (T1) crystals, have been measured in order to test the possibility of deviations of the experimental results from the predictions of the quantum theory. In fact, Jauch and Bohm, starting with different motivations, both arrive at the possibility of a lower correlation ratio between the two orthogonal polarization states of the two photons than predicted by quantum theory. This in turn should give a lower azimuthal anisotropy in the angular correlations. Our experimental results compared with the theoretical predictions, after correction for finite geometry by means of a Montecarlo method, do not confirm quantum theory and exclude the hypotheses of Jauch and of Bohm. We are continuing the experiment in order to test wether the breakdown in the polarization correlation depends on the distance (spatial and/or temporal) between the two correlated scattering events, as suggested by Jauch.

Notes: Abstract In this review we discuss the different aspects of positron annihilation in metals that involve the dynamics of positron motion before annihilation. The emphasis is on the theory, but also some experimental evidence is quoted. The topics covered are: slowing down and thermalization, effective mass, temperature dependence of positron vacancy trapping, positron channeling, and escape of low energy positrons from metal surfaces.

Notes: Abstract Probabilities in momentum space for the benzene molecule are calculated for two cases: An ordinary benzene molecule, and benzene with a bound positron which is coalesced with one of the electrons. The former probability is related to the Compton scattering profile; the latter, to angular correlation measurements made in positron annihilation experiments. In this work we make two comparisons on the basis of quantum mechanical calculations; a) between Compton scattering and positron annihilation results, and b) among the several possible positron annihilation results associated with different symmetries for the positronic molecular orbital (PMO). The Compton scattering results are found to be similar to the positron annihilation results for the more symmetrical PMOs; and all these are quite different from the positron annihilation results for the less symmetrical PMOs. A suggestion for a crucial experiment is made.

Notes: Abstract The Doppler broadening of positron annihilation photons was measured in 17 metals. A model which considers the positron lifetime spectra in metals to be composed of terms for annihilation with conduction and core electrons and surface centers of low electron momentum is used to correlate calculated core annihilation rates with the Doppler lineshape. Ta metal was doped with defects with high energy implantations of14N+4 ions at variable doses. Differences in the Doppler linewidths were ascribed as being principally a reflection of the probabilty of annihilation with core electrons relative to annihilation with conduction electrons.

Notes: Abstract An exact general formula is derived relating the data obtained from t.a.c-m.c.a. systems to the input signal distribution; it is shown how the latter is modified by the measuring process. A general method of data correction is given, together with important approximations, which evaluates the input signal distribution from the data without any loss of signal. A simple and accurate method of system calibration based only on counting and not requiring the use of calibrated delay lines is also given.

Notes: Abstract The trapping of positrons at defects in evaporated copper and lead films has been investigated. Measurements of the positron lifetime spectra in high purity films over a wide range of deposition rates and a limited range of substrate temperatures can be interpreted in terms of positron trapping at both grain boundaries and dislocations in the copper films and at grain boundaries only in the lead films. Isochronal annealing studies indicate that recovery and recrystallization of these films is qualitatively similar to that of the bulk metal after deformation.

Notes: Abstract The trapping model frequently used for analyzing experiments on positron annihilation in solids is put on a firm theoretical basis by deriving it from Waite's theory of diffusion-limited reactions. The conventional version of the trapping model turns out to be correct only if the trapping process is not diffusion-limited and if the escape probability of positrons from traps is negligibly small. The present paper treats both detrapping and the effects of positron diffusion for an arbitrary number of different types of traps, and develops a perturbation-theory solution for the general case.
