    Description: This study investigates the morphometric and meristic features of Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus in relations to heavy metal concentrations. Varying sizes of Clarias nigrodigitatus were obtained with the help of fisher-folks, from Arakanga reservoir Ogun state, Nigeria. Water samples were also collected alongside with fish samples per week and five of the samples were sent to laboratory for analysis to determine the presence of four heavy metals in both fish and water. Lead, Cadmium, Nickel and Arsenic were investigated by atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). Four tissues; gills, kidney, liver and muscle were compared with the level of metals in the water. Lower concentrations of metals were recorded in water except for Cadmium which is higher, than in fish. Lower concentration of heavy metals found in fish and water was less than that recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO's) guideline for maximum concentration recorded in the tissue of the samples. Lead was found to be dominant in the gills of C. nigrodigitatus, while Cadmium was found to be highest in the water sample from Arakanga reservoir. There is significant difference (P〈0.05) in Nickel and Arsenic concentration in the tissues of C. nigrodigitatus and water. It was concluded that though the heavy metals of interest were present in measurable quantities, they were still within safe limits for consumption.

    Description: Assessment of the result of crude oil spillage that occurred at Aguobiri Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State in 2007, is presented in this paper. The results of the laboratory analysis of water samples for Total Hydro carbon content (THC) was 1.56mg/l, 2.94mg/l and 23.96mg/l at 300m,200m and 9m respectively from the spill point. Heavy metals values in plant tissues were Vanadium-2.1 4mg/kg, Nicke-4.06mg/kg and THC of 09,309.5mg/kg at 300m from the spill point. The values of heavy metals in soil samples were Vanadium 2.14mg/kg and Nickel4.19mg/kg and THC of 133,886.20mg/kg at 300m from the spill point. This is to buttress the fact that oil spill is not limited to the site of occurrence but spreads to affect flora life far away from the spill point. Consequently, this negatively impacts farming and fisheries activities in such areas.

    Description: A review of migratory activity in fishes reveals that migration is important for the completion of life cycle. Recent studies have increasingly demonstrated the wide spread existence of spatio-temporal variations in the abundance and distribution of species of freshwater fishes, previously assumed not to move between habitats. These movements are often for spawning, feeding and refuge, and in many cases are fundamental for the successful completion of life cycles. Chemical and physical changes in water environment affect the migration of fish. Most fish undertake feeding, breeding or wintering migrations. A number of studies have documented the influence of freshwater and ocean conditions, climate variability and human impacts resulting from impoundment and aquaculture on fish migration.

    Description: Nutrient content of organic manure vary according to the composition which determines the fertility and efficiency. The effectiveness of liquid manure depends on the N.P.K value of the manure source. One kilogram of each manure source was weighed and loaded into a polyethylene bag for ten (10) days anaerobic fermentation. pH was monitored for five consecutive days after the second day using Digital pH meter (Model PHeP NOVO Illkirch Cedex France) with values ranging between 5.6-6.3 and 5.7-6.9 for both liquid manures slurry. The liquid manure was produced from Pig and Poultry manure slurry with N.P.K values range between 4.80-5.96, 4.10-4.66,0.47-0.80 and 7.50-8.80, 3.25-5.60, 0.79-0.85 for Pig and poultry manures respectively. Organic manure loose nitrogen when exposed to extreme temperature due to volatilization of NH3. Therefore, in liquid manure production, anaerobic fermentation enhances nutrient stability through immobilization of ammonia-nitrogen compounds. The interaction of N.P.K and pH shows the availability, stability and quality of nutrient in the liquid manure produced. Anaerobic fermentation produces better quality liquid manure than the manure due to immobilization of ammonia nitrogen. Both liquid manure had positive correlation (R2) of 0.6977 and (R2) of 0.2370 for Poultry and Pig liquid manure. Liquid manure application in ponds can reduce cost of pond fertilization especially in the integrated fish farming system than the use of organic manure directly serving as a better means of pond fertilization and pollution control in the farm environment under a stressed economy.

    Description: Fish species have different responses to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposure to crude oil. Some achieve PAH biotransformation while others have bioconcentration. These trends may be specie-specific and may depend on PAH uptake route - through water or food. PAH uptake in the red sea bream, Pagrus major for PAH biomonitoring in Asian oil spill waters was assessed in water-borne and dietary exposures of the fish to four representative PAHS. In the water-borne exposure, juvenile fish of average weight 83g were exposed in a flow-through toxicity test for ten (10) days to a mix of 30~kg/L phenanthrene, pyrene, and chrysene; 3~kg/L of benzo[a] pyrene (B[a]P). In the dietary exposure, 20 juveniles of average weight 80g were fed diets with 10 n g/g phenanthrene, pyrene and chrysene, and 2 n g/g of B[a]P for ten days. Fish livers were sampled for PAH concentrations on days 0, 2, 5 and l0 in both exposures. Phenanthrene PAHs were accumulated in the water-borne exposure with concentrations increasing with duration of exposure. Phenanthrene had the highest concentration of 2210 ng/g on day 10, while pyrene and chrysene were 170 and 45 ng/g respectively. B[a]P was not accumulated. ln the dietary exposure, all the test PAHs were accumulated. Bioconcentration decreased with duration of exposure, unlike in the water-borne exposure which was the reverse. Phenanthrene, with an initial 58 ng/g concentration, was reduced to 10.6 ng/g on day 10. B[a]P accumulation in the dietary exposure is significant. PAH accumulation was higher in the water-borne exposure than in the dietary exposure and PAH bioconcentration in the fish depends on uptake route.

    Description: The influence of indices of reproduction (Gonadosomatic index-GSI-and Hepatosomatic index -HSI-) on condition factor and morphometric features of Tilapia guineensis were examined using 160 fish comprising 70 females and 90 males. Total length, standard length and body depth were measured to the nearest 1cm, while each fish was weighed to the nearest 0.1 g. The gonads and liver were removed and weighed separatdy to the nearest 0.00lg. Gonadosomatic index, Hepatosomatic index and condition factor were calculated. Correlation analysis between the reproductive indices and the external features of the fish were carried out. Results revealed positive correlation between gonadosomatic index and body depth and between GSI and standard length in both sexes, indicating the dependence of gonadal development on body depth and standard length in both sexes. However, the relationship between the reproductive indices and total length was significant only in the female. The relationship between HSI and Standard length was also significant in female (P〈0.01, r = 0.707) and male (P〈0.05, r = -0.216), but in positive and negative direction-respectively. The correlation between the reproductive indices and condition factor were not significant in both sexes. The correlation of GSI and HSI in male (r = 0.062) was not significant, while the positive correlation of GSI and HSI in female (r= 0.300) was significant (P〈0.05). It was therefore concluded that body depth and standard length could be important factors in determining spawning success in both sexes, while total length may be an additional tool in determining spawning success only in female T. guineensis.

    Description: Changes in water quality caused by industrialization and technological advancement, affect fishery resources. The Warri River like many other water bodies in Niger Delta, Nigeria are experiencing side effects in terms of pollutant build up cum destruction of fishery resources. This study investigated the fish species composition/diversity of the river in comparison to the baseline studies of previous researchers. Nine sampling locations were chosen including, Jeddo, NNPC Jetty, Nigeria ports Authority jetty, Main Warri market, Delta Steel Jetty, Shell Ramp, Udu Bridge/market Ugbolokposo and Agbarho.Fish species were collected from the respective nine Locations monthly for 24 months. Fish were obtained from landings of local fishermen every fortnight with prior arrangement. Highest diversity index of 3.48 occurred at shell Ramp/Globestar, while the least value of 2.63 was recorded at NNPC Jetty. The condition factor of most fish species in the study were above 1.0, though more species were better conditioned in location 1 (Jeddo). The catfish families probably due to their hardy nature were best conditioned of all families represented. Thirty four fish species recorded in this study compared to 91 species obtained in previous works of 1989 -1994 reflects a sharp drop in species diversity.

    Description: Globally, aquatic ecosystems are highly polluted with heavy metals from anthropogenic and terrigenous sources. The objectives of this study, is to portray the use of EDXRF for the analysis of heavy metal pollution in Clarias gariepinus. C. gariepinus were collected from Dumba, Lake Chad, Nigerian sector and analyzed with EDXRF with 〈sup〉109〈/sup〉Cd as excitation source of the samples. The concentrations of Cadmium, Chromium, Copper, Manganese, Iron, Lead and Zinc (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Fe, Pb and Zn) in mg/kg were determined in C. gariepinus and were compared with World Health Organization (WHO, 1985) and Federal Environmental Protection Agency (FEPA, 2003) to ascertain the level of Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Fe, Pb and Zn in C. gariepinus from Dumba. The results indicated that C. gariepinus is polluted with Cr, Cu, Mn, and Pb when compared with permissible limit of WHO, 1985 and FEPA, 2003. Therefore, the consumption of C. gariepinus from Dumba may pose a health risk.

    Description: The Length-weight relationship and changes in the condition factor of Citharinus citharus of the Lake Akata, an ox-bow Lake of River Katsina-Ala, a tributary of River Benue was studied. A total of five hundred and five (505) fish samples were collected from May 2008-April 2009. Length-weight relationship of fish was estimated from the equation: W = a.Lb which was transformed to base 10 logarithm, and condition factor (k) was determined using the equation: K=100W/L3. Both sexes of C. citharus in Lake Akata exhibited negative allometric growth pattern. The combined length weight relationship of C. citharus sexes was LogW = - 1.7738 + 2.9044 LogL (r2 = 0.9527). The coefficient of determination for the Length-Weight relationship for both sexes of C. citharus in Lake Akata was strongly positive. The mean condition factor for the combined sexes was 1.37 ~c 0.02, but individually, female C. citharus were in better condition (1.44 ~c 0.03) compared to the males (1.29 ~c 0.02). The condition factor of C. citharus in dry season (1.37 ~c 0.03) was not significantly higher than that of (1.36 ~c 0.03) in wet season (p〉0.05). This means the fish species are living well in the lake as the 'K' value are greater than one.

    Description: A study was conducted for natural radioactivity of some fish samples from Kainji Lake, situated between latitudes 9~' 50' - 10~' 57' North and longitudes 4~'25'-4~'45' East, New Bussa, Niger state, Nigeria, using gamma spectroscopy method with Nal(TI) detector. Radioactivity a phenomenon that leads to production of radiations, and radiation is known to trigger or induce cancer. The fish are analyzed to estimate the radioactivity (activity) concentrations due to natural radionuclides (Radium 222(226Ra), Thorium 232(232Th) and Potassium 40 (40K). The obtained result shows that the activity concentration for (226Ra), in all the fish samples collected ranges from 16.06 ~c 0.44 Bqkg-1 to 67.39 ~c 12.34 Bqkg-1 with an average value of 37.22 ~c 4.31 Bqkg-1. That of 232Th, ranges from 42.66 ~c 0.81 Bqkg-1 to 200.6 ~c 10.66 Bqkg-1 and the average value stands at 94.82 ~c 3.82 Bqkg-1. The activity concentration for 40K, ranges between 243.3 ~c 1.56 Bqkg-1 to 384.98 ~c 11.97 Bqkg-1 and the average is 618.2 ~c 26.81 Bqkg-1. This indicated that average daily intake due to natural activity from the fish is valued at 0.999 Bq/day, 2.545Bq/day and 10.31 Bq/day for 226Ra, 232Th and 40K respectively. This shows a promising result, since the activity concentration values for most of the fish are within the acceptable limits. However location Upstream02 (9~'51'.285~AN, 4~'35'.533~AE) and Upstream07 (9~'51'.285~AN, 4~'35'.533~AE) fish, became outliers with significant values of 1 13.10~kSvy-1 and 121.68~kSvy-1 effective dose. This could be attributed to variation in geological formations in the lake as well as the feeding habits of these fish. The work shows that consumers of fish from Kainji Lake have no risk of radioactivity ingestion, even though no amount of radiation is assumed to be totally safe.

    Description: A study was conducted on commercially important fish species of heavy metals in water bodies, The primary objectives were to find out the amount of heavy metals concentration in the fish species, sediments and water samples at the deep and shallow part of the river, to determine the toxicity and relationship between the collected samples and the rate at which it pollutes the water. Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) evaluate their wholesomeness for human consumption. Four heavy metals (Lead, Cadmium, Copper and Zinc) were analysed and only Copper and Zinc were found to be present in the digested samples. The concentration of Copper in the fish (flesh) is 0.09mg/l and that of Zinc is 0.25mg/l. In the bone samples, Copper was found to have 0.17mg/l and Zinc to be 0.22mg/l. In the water samples analyzed, the concentration of Copper is 0.035mg/1 while that of Zinc is 0.047mg/l. In the sediment sample, the amount of Copper is 310.0mg/kg while that of Zinc is 20.50.0mg/kg. This however signifies that the fish species in the Ogun River as well as the water is suitable for consumption which was found to be less than the World Health Organization (WHO's) maximum recommended acceptable limits in the food.

    Description: Twelve weeks feeding trial was conducted to determine the effects of different dietary lipid sources on the hematological changes in Clarias gariepinus juveniles. Six (6) iso-nitroginous diets were formulated at 45% CP and fed to triplicate groups of 15 juveniles. The feed contained (Palm Seed Oil (PSO), Ugwu Seed (USO), Soya Bean Oil (SBO), Almond Seed Oil (ASO), Mixture Of All the vegetable oil + the fish oil (MOA) and Cod Liver Oil (CLO) which is the control. The oils were added at 5% inclusion level respectively. Fish of mean weight 22.83 ~c 0.30g were fed these experimental diets in triplicate groups. The hematological analyses of fish showed that red blood cell, white blood cell, Erythrocyte sedimentation rate ( ESR), Mean cell volume (MCV), Mean cell Haemoglobin (MCH) and packed cell volume were not significantly different (p〈0.05), but haemoglobin concentration and Mean cell haemologlobin concentration (MCHC) were significantly different (p〉0.05). The present study showed that PSO, USO, ASO, SBO and MOA can effectively replace cod liver oil without compromising the health of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus.

    Description: A 14-day quick appraisal fisheries survey of the Brass River area was conducted from 8th-21st June 2005 to collect information on fish species, fish catch and fishing craft. Total fish catch was estimated to be 11,086.12kg. Out of a total of 15 families and 43 species caught in the area, the Sciaenidae (Pseudotolithus typus, P.elongatus, P.senegalenensis) contributed 37%, the Polynemidae (Polydactylus quadrifilis) 26%, and Bagridae (Chrysichtyes nigrodigitatus) accounted for 17% of the total fish landings. The landings at the Coastal Marine Waters were about 66 % while the catch from gill nets constituted 68% of the total fish landings, followed by traps with 15%, hooks and lines landed 11 % while seine nets and cast nets contributed 5% and 1 % respectively to total fish landings. Four types of crafts were used in the Brass River Fisheries including the Ghana boat, plank boat (with or without engine), fiberglass speed boat and the dug-out canoe. In view of high industrial and commercial activities and especially threats from oil and gas pollution, it is recommended that the fisheries of the Brass area be properly investigated.

    Description: The concentration of trace metals: Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb), magnesium (Mn), Nickel (Ni) and Zinc (Zn) were determined in water, sediment and fish tissues (S. melanotheron) collected from Elechi creek in Port Harcourt, Nigeria between October and November, 2010. The overall mean concentrations of the trace metals (Mg/g dry weight) in all combined samples ranged from 0.06-0.24 (Cd), 0.59-2.39 (Pb), 0.08-1.15 (Mn), 0.15-0.48 (Ni) and 0.18-7.04 (Zn) respectively. The concentration of the trace metals in water, fish and sediments were in the following order: Pb 〉Ni 〉Zn〉Cd 〉Mn; Zn〉Pb 〉Mn〉Ni 〉Cd and Zn〉 Pb〉Mn〉Ni〉Cd respectively. Except in water, Zinc had the highest value while cadmium had the lowest value. Mn concentration in fish tissue was greater than WHO/FAO certified values. Correlation coefficients between pairs of metals concentration show that all metals positively correlate except Cadmium and Nickel. Elechi creek is not heavily burdened with metals, but aquatic environment should be monitored periodically to avoid excessive intake of trace metals by human.

    Description: One way to diversify Nigeria's economy is to improve on agricultural activities with low import input but high export potential such as the promotion of the ornamental fish industry. Poecilia reticulata is one such fish species that enjoys international acceptability. However, a potential bottleneck in its international trade is the decertification of exports from Nigeria in the uncertainty of standing parasite fauna of locally available stock of Poecilia reticulata. Four Streets in different local government areas of Lagos State were identified with existing populations of P. reticulata where collection of samples with a scoop net was done before sorting into 60 male and 60 female individuals per wastewater drain from each Street was carried out monthly between March, 2004 and February, 2005. Temperature, pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), water transparency and drain depth were measured with mercury-bulb thermometer, ARH-l CE electronic meter, Oxyguard electronic probe, secchi disc and calibrated pole respectively. Chi-square was used to test for sex-related differences in prevalence and ANOVA for differences in physicochemical analyses. Only 3.4% of the 4,320 samples examined were infected with C. cotti. There was no sex-related differences in the prevalence of C. cotti while only Dissolved oxygen (DO), transparency and drain depth were found to be significantly different among the wastewater drains on the four Streets. The highest prevalence of 15.0% was obtained in P. reticulata females obtained from Igi-Olugbin and Adenaike Alagbe Streets in September, 2004. High prevalence clustering, correlated with receding rains. However, mean monthly temperature, transparency and drain depth were significantly different across drain (p〈0.05). P. reticulata obtained from these four Streets can be further exploited for import substitution and export market since this prevalence level can be managed and does not rival records of C. cotti in other popular export sources in Asia.

    Description: Aeromonas hydrophila was the predominant bacteria isolated from moribund fingerlings, post fingerlings, juveniles and table size of Catfish (Clarias gariepinus) cultured in concrete tanks. A. hydrophila was recovered from the internal organs of the fish showing varying degrees of clinical signs of dropsy, ulcers, fin rot and tail rot. The study considers the role of A.hydrophila, a pathogen of emerging importance and its presence in fish as a cause for concern for culturists, processors, consumers and exporters.

    Description: The comparative study of the structure of testes of both the cultured and wild Male Clarias species was carried out with the aim of highlighting the possible differences in the testicular structure between them. The data were analysed based on the Regression and Correlation Analysis to examine the relationship between and within the data using Microsoft Excel data analysis tool. The Samples of the testes were fixed in Bouin's fluid for 72 hours. The tissue samples were passed through graded concentrations of alcohol at 50%, 70%, 90%, and absolute alcohol (100%) in order to achieve dehydration. The tissues were cleared in two jars of xylene for one hour and then embedded after passing through the four changes of paraffin wax at 60~'C. Paraffin sections of 5. Micron thick were obtained on a microtome. These were mounted on clear albuminized slides after floating on a warm water bath and then dried in an oven and stained with Haematoxylin and Eosin (H & E). At the same time, some of the cut sections of the testes were stained with Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) reagents. All the slides were examined under the light microscope. On the slides stained with H&E and PAS, the histological features of the testis were evaluated and the histomorphometry of the testes determined. The findings of this work showed that there was no histological difference in the testicular structure of both domestically reared and wild strains of Clarias gariepinus species. At the end of the experiment, this work showed that testicular structure of Clarias gariepinus in the cultured and the wild are histologically similar.

    Description: The Physio-Chemical parameters of River Uke, Keffi, Nasarawa State, were studied between the months of February to August 2011. Nine water parameters were analyzed and Melanoides tuberculata was also identified using identification keys by Brown and Kristensen (1993). These include temperature, pH, alkalinity, turbidity, conductivity, nitrates, phosphates, total dissolved substances and dissolved oxygen using the methods described by Boyd (1979). The temperature ranged between 25~'C - 27.5~'C (mean = ~c 26.31~'C), while pH ranges between 6.3 and 7.5(mean = ~c 6.89). The highest value obtained for alkalinity was I5.4mg L-1, while the lowest was 4mgL-1(mean = ~c 10.2mg L-1). Dissolved oxygen concentration value was between 4.lmgL-1, and 8.6mgL-1(mean = ~c 6.35mgL-1), the turbidity in dry season range between 50 to 60 cm and in rainy season, it ranged between 4 to 7 cm. The total dissolved substances range between 40ppm and 200ppm. The conductivity value ranged between 80~ks/cm and 400~ks/cm. An extreme high concentration of phosphate was recorded and ranged between 0.9mL-1 and 4.2mg L-1, which was due to water and land use practice. The nitrate concentration was negligibly low with concentration between 0.00% and 0.15%. This concentration was however adequate and support fish population and freshwater snails such as Melanoides tuberculata.

    Description: Proximate composition of Horse radish (Moringa oleifera) Seeds meal was investigated. Standard analytical methods were used to determine the nutritive value; Na and K were estimated using framephotometer, Ca , Mg and P were determined titrimetrically. The results (in g/100g sample) obtained were (7.67%) moisture, (3.56%) ash, (23.75%) crude lipid, (1.16%) fiber, (40.23%) crude protein and (23.50%) carbohydrate. The meal is rich in K (1775mg %), Na (61.23mg %), Ca, Mg and P were 0.33mg%, 0.60mg% and 3.24mg%. Moringa oleifera seed meal could therefore be considered as potential rich sources of nutrient to supplementing plant based diets in aquaculture.

    Description: The experiment was conducted to evaluate the acute toxic of cypermethrin, a synthetic pyrethroids on juveniles of Clarias gariepinus. The effect was assessed based on the comparism results of haematology and histopathological tissues examinations of control and experimental group exposed to five nominal concentration of cypavest, 10EC Pesticide Preparation (active substance 100mg/l) of cypermethrin in a static non-renewal bioassay for 96 hours. The 96hrs LC50 value of the exposed juveniles was found to be 0.062 mg/1. Fish exhibited progressive loss of balance, respiratory distress, erratic movement and death. Examination of haematology significantly showed higher value (P〈0.001; 0.01) of white blood cell (WBC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), packed cell volume (PCV), monophilis and heterophilis; a significant reduction (P〈0.001, 0.01) in Red Blood Cell (RBC) and Lymphocyte was obtained as compared to the control. Severe necrosis, haemorrhages vacuolation, congestion and focal interstitial haemorrhages were the stopathological changes in the tissues of gill and liver, thus concluding that cypermethrin is toxic to juveniles of Clarias gariepinus.

    Description: Ammonia as the primary product of nitrogen metabolism causes mortality due to ammonia toxicity produced in a culture system. Effect of pH and Temperature was calculation and expanded using the acid dissociation constant (pka) for equation: pka = 0.09018+ 2729.92/T. Ammonia values (f) expressed in percents for intervals of 1.0 degree from 0 - 30~'C and pH increasing from pH 6-10 where T is the Temperature and acid dissociation constant (pka). Ammonia (f) was calculated using the equation: f= 1/(10pka-pH+1).Small increments of 0.5 were considered from pH values of 3.0 - 7.0 for Temperature range of 20 - 34~'C as experienced now in most farms in Lagos. Casio scientific calculator fx-82TL (12 Digits) with four significant figures was used for the calculation. The acid dissociation constant (Pka) calculated for 31-34~'C was 9.0702, 9.0407, 9.0115 and 8.9824 respectively. pH and Temperature can be monitored and used for ammonia estimation by cross-marching with the extended pH -Temperature Emerson monogram. This will show the estimated ammonia as observed for pH and Temperature at pH 6.0 - 7.0. The use of this management protocol (Monogram) will reduce mortality in culture systems serving as a prompt management tool for fish farm operation. The understanding of the usage of this monogram will reduce the cost of production usually necessitated by non availability and high cost of imported water quality, which many farmers cannot afford.

    Description: The occurrence and distribution of macrobenthic invertebrates were investigated in relation to water flow and nature of bottom in the Lower Taylor Creek. Benthic samples were collected from 3 stations with Eckman grab, fixed in 4% formaldehyde solution with Rosebengal stain, sorted and preserved in 70% ethanol and identified in the laboratory under stereo or compound microscopes. Five (5) families of macrobenthic invertebrates (Tubificidae, Chironomidae, Naididae, Sphaeridae (Bivalvia) and Lumbricidae) comprising 7 species occurred in the samples. Tubificids formed 69% of the macrobenthic fauna and were distributed in all Stations. Station III with least flow and soft mud bottom had more significant number of organisms (p 〈0.05) than Stations I and II with silt and clay and silt and sand bottoms respectively. Water flow and nature of bottom, influenced the occurrence and distribution of macrobenthos in the Lower Taylor Creek.

    Description: The effects of crude oil on the population structure of plankton in water samples collected from a fish pond at the African Regional Aquaculture Centre, Aluu, was investigated for a period of four weeks. The samples were analyzed initially for species composition, community structure, population density and water quality. The samples were divided into five different tanks after which crude oil was introduced into the test tanks. The data showed that exposure to crude oil significantly reduced the population density of the plankton, altered the species composition, community structure and some of the water quality variables in the experimental tanks. In the control, pH values dropped from 6.61 to 6.05 in the 1.0 and 2.0ml/L tanks respectively. Oxygen values decreased from 7.5 to 5.78 in the control and to 5.34 and 5.16 in the 1.0 and 2.0ml/L tanks respectively. Temperature values were relatively stable in all the tanks. Exposure to crude oil caused a reduction in the number of phytoplankton genera from 19 to 12 and from 19 to 11 in the 1.0 and 2.0ml/L tanks respectively. Similarly, zooplankton genera decreased from 8 to 5 in the 1.0ml/L tank but increased from 8 to 9 in the 2.0ml/L tank. The genera eliminated by the crude oil include Cosmarium spp, Euglena and Navicula dicephela. The effects of crude oil on plankton therefore are tied to the amount of crude oil spilled.

    Description: The growth enhancement potential of Mucuna pruriens utilis on the Nile Tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), was investigated in eight weeks feeding trials in concrete tanks at the African Regional Aquaculture Centre, Aluu. Three isonitrogenous diets were fed to three sets of fingerlings of the fish with full fat soya bean diet(D1) serving as the Control. The initial average fish weight was 1.45 ~c 0.12 and the final average fish weight was 5.67 ~c 1.46. Crude protein, ash and nitrogen free extract of the carcasses were significantly different (P〉0.05) from the control specimens. The average weight gains were 3.85g, 3.54g and 3.42g for fish fed 'full fat' Soya bean based diet(Control), fermented Mucuna seed diet(D2) and unfermented Mucuna seed diets (D3) respectively. Average apparent food consumed was in the order D2 〉D1 〉 D3. Fish fed fermented Mucuna seed diet (D2) had the highest food conversion ratio of 1.51 followed by fish fed with the control diet (D1) 1.22 and fish fed unfermented Mucuna seed diets (D3) 1.19. Unfermented Mucuna seed diet had the highest food conversion efficiency (0.84) followed by full fat Soya bean based diet(Control) 0.82 and the least was the fermented Mucuna seed diet (0.66). The results of this study indicate that unfermented Mucuna diet can conveniently replace Soya bean based diet without significantly affecting growth.

    Description: Poecilia reticulata is a common ornamental tropical fish found in many wastewater drains in Nigeria. Guppies feed on Oligochaetes which are intermediate hosts of Eustrongylides ignotus which is a parasite of Clarias gariepinus. The potential ban on the importation of ornamental fishes into Nigeria due to dearth of information on the parasite fauna of ornamental fishes has enhanced the demand for local species, usually sourced from the wild. Sampling was done monthly using a 2mm mesh-sized scoop net along selected drains at Igi-Olugbin Street, Basil Ogamba Street, Ahmadu Bello Road and Adenaike Alagbe Street between March, 2004 and February, 2005. The selected drains were abutting residences and varying industrial activities in each of four different local government areas of Lagos State. 60 female and 60 male samples were randomly selected from each drain for dissection and microscopy. Nematodes observed were identified using standard identification guides. Prevalence was determined as percentage infection in guppies examined. Measurements of waste water temperature, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), pH and transparency were done according to APHA methods. Drain depth was determined using a calibrated pole. Data was analyzed using chi-square test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient. Out of 4,320 samples examined, only 156 were infected. There was no sex-related difference in the prevalence of E. ignotus and no significant difference in mean monthly pH and DO across drains. The highest prevalence of 12.0% was observed in P. reticlliata males obtained from Adenaike Alagbe Street in June, 2004. Mean monthly physicochemical parameters for drains were: temperature, 25.0 ~c1.1 - 26.0 ~c 1.1~'C; DO, 7.8 ~c 2.1 - 8.4 ~c 1.8mg1-1 ; pH, 6.9 ~c 0.5 - 7.3 ~c 0.4; transparency, 3.5 ~c 0.8 - 23.0 ~c 3.6 cm and drain depth, 9.6 ~c 2.3 - 14.8 ~c 3.2 cm. The prevalence of E. ignotus in the P. reticulata obtained from the selected Streets should not prevent their exploitation for both import substitution and the export market because it is low.

    Description: Heavy metal concentration of the water in the sewage treatment pond of the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, Nigeria, was studied between April and September, 2007 using Energy Dispensive X-Ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF)analysis. The Mean ~c S.E of ten (10) Heavy Metals observed during the study is as follows: Vanadium 0.75 ~c 0.07mg/L; Chromium 0.69 ~c 0.04mg/L; Manganese 0.61 ~c 0.06mg/L; Iron 0.40 ~c 0.03mg/L; Cobalt 0.31 ~c 0.02mg/L; Nickel 0.25 ~c 0.02mg/L; Copper 0.25 ~c 0.02mg/L; Zinc 0.31 ~c 0.08mg/L; Arsenic 0.24 ~c 0.02mg/L and Lead 0.31 ~c 0.08/L. Metal Index of between 67.32-93.72 was observed during the study period. Metals like Lead, Arsenic, Nickel, Iron, Manganese and Chromium showed concentrations above NIS and WHO Maximum Allowable Concentration for drinking water while metals like Zinc and Copper showed concentrations below the NIS and WHO Maximum Allowable Concentration for drinking water, Vanadium and Cobalt had no values for comparison.

    Description: The acute toxic effect of industrial effluents from Agbara Industrial environs of Ologe lagoon was investigated in a static renewable lethal bioassay using fingerlings and Juveniles of African catfish (Clarias gariepinus). Twenty (20) pieces of the fingerlings were stocked per tank and each treatment was in triplicate. Physico-chemical parameters: temperature, pH, Dissolved Oxygen, DO and conductivity in treatment tanks were monitored for 96 hours. Behavioural responses were studied; mortality data recorded, and histopathological analysis was also done. Except for dissolved oxygen, other physico-chemical parameters monitored did not show significant differences (p〉0.05). The lethal bioassay showed that as the concentration of effluent increased, more mortality was recorded; but as the time of exposure increased, mortality reduced. The LC50 obtained at all the different time intervals for C. gariepinus fingerlings in 24,48, 72 and 96 hrs were: 69.45,46.39, 40.81 and 34.03(%). While in juveniles, the values were: 64.52,49.21, 32.50, and 19.63(%) respectively. Abnormal behaviour was observed; they showed repeated darting movement within an hour of introduction, darkening in the eye and on the skin, haemorrhage in the gills, spiral swimming and death. Histopathological examination of the gills and liver of the fishes showed lesions which increased progressively with increasing level of toxicants. Observed changes in the gills were mainly: epithelial lifting, swollen lamellae, necrosis and mass degeneration, fatty and vacuolar degeneration, loss of lamellae and marked disorganization in gill structure and arrangement. In the liver, there were vacoulation, portal congestions, pancreatic necrosis, fatty degeneration and severe disruption of the hepatic cord. Fishes in the control treatments showed no visible lesions throughout the experiments. This information confirms that histopathological alterations are good biomarkers for toxic impact assessment of industrial effluent on fish. Therefore, an indiscriminate discharge of this effluent to surrounding water should be discouraged.

    Description: The objective of this study was to detect Listeria monocytogenes in frozen fish in Lagos, Nigeria. A total of 55 frozen fish from two markets (Iyana-Ipaja and Mushin) were analyzed for the presence of L. monocytogenes using Oxoid Listeria Precis method. Out of the 55 samples analyzed, only 15 were positive for L. monocytogenes. The study showed that L. monocytogenes is a contaminant of frozen fish and may pose serious health implications on consumption of the contaminated fish.
