    Description: Despite the advance in our understanding of the carbon exchange between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere, semiarid ecosystems have been poorly investigated and little is known about their role in the global carbon balance. We used eddy covariance measurements to determine the exchange of CO2 between a semiarid steppe and the atmosphere over 3 years. The vegetation is a perennial grassland of Stipa tenacissima L. located in the SE of Spain. We examined diurnal, seasonal and interannual variations in the net ecosystem carbon balance (NECB) in relation to biophysical variables. Cumulative NECB was a net source of 65.7, 143.6 and 92.1 g C mˉ2 yrˉ1 for the 3 years studied, respectively. We separated the year into two distinctive periods: dry period and growing season. The ecosystem was a net source of CO2 to the atmosphere, particularly during the dry period when large CO2 positive fluxes of up to 15 μmol mˉ2 sˉ1 were observed in concomitance with large wind speeds. Over the growing season, the ecosystem was a slight sink or neutral with maximum rates of -2.3 μmol mˉ2 sˉ1. Rainfall events caused large fluxes of CO2 to the atmosphere and determined the length of the growing season. In this season, photosynthetic photon flux density controlled day-time NECB just below 1000 μmol mˉ2 sˉ1. The analyses of the diurnal and seasonal data and preliminary geological and gas-geochemical evaluations, including C isotopic analyses, suggest that the CO2 released was not only biogenic but most likely included a component of geothermal origin, presumably related to deep fluids occurring in the area. These results highlight the importance of considering geological carbon sources, as well as the need to carefully interpret the results of eddy covariance partitioning techniques when applied in geologically active areas potentially affected by CO2-rich geofluid circulation.

    Description: We present an improved evaluation of the current strain and stress fields in Southern Apennines (Italy) obtained through a careful analysis of geodetic, seismological and borehole data. In particular, our analysis provides an updated comparison between the accrued strain recorded by geodetic data, and the strain released by seismic activity in a region hit by destructive historical earthquakes. To this end, we have used 9 years of GPS observations (2001-2010) from a dense network of permanent stations, a dataset of 73 well constrained stress indicators (borehole breakouts and focal mechanisms of moderate to large earthquakes), and published estimations of the geological strain accommodated by active faults in the region. Although geodetic data are generally consistent with seismic and geologic information, previously unknown features of the current deformation in southern Italy emerge from this analysis. The newly obtained GPS velocity field supports the well-established notion of a dominant NE-SW-oriented extension concentrated in a ~50 km wide belt along the topographic relief of the Apennines, as outlined by the distribution of seismogenic normal faults. Geodetic deformation is, however, non uniform along the belt, with two patches of higher strain-rate and shear stress accumulation in the north (Matese Mountains) and in the south (Irpinia area). Low geodetic strain-rates are found in the Bradano basin and Apulia plateau to the east. Along the Ionian Sea margin of southern Italy, in southern Apulia and eastern Basilicata and Calabria, geodetic velocities indicate NW-SE extension which is consistent with active shallow-crustal gravitational motion documented by geological studies. In the west, along the Tyrrhenian margin of the Campania region, the tectonic geodetic field is disturbed by volcanic processes. Comparison between the magnitude of the geodetic and the seismic strain-rates (computed using a long historical seismicity catalogue) allow detecting areas of high correlation, particularly along the axis of the mountain chain, indicating that most of the geodetic strain is released by earthquakes. This relation does not hold for the instrumental seismic catalogue, as a consequence of the limited time span covered by instrumental data. In other areas (e.g. Murge plateau in central Apulia), where seismicity is very low or absent, the yet appreciable geodetic deformation might be accommodated in aseismic mode. Overall, the excellent match between the stress and the strain-rate directions in much of the Apennines indicates that both earthquakes and ground deformation patterns are driven by the same crustal forces.

    Description: Several volcanoes worldwide have shown changes in their stress state as a consequence of the deformation produced by the pressurization of a magmatic body. This study investigates seismic swarms occurring on the western flank of Mt. Etna in January 1997 - January 1998. Integrating seismic observations and geodetic data, we constrained the seismogenic fault system, and on the basis of stress tensor inversion and SHMAX analyses, we infer an inflating pressure source located at 5.5 km b.s.l. beneath the west portion of summit area. Evaluation of Coulomb failure stress (CFS) related to the proposed model, showed how a large part of the seismogenic fault underwent a significant CFS increase (500 kPa). We infer the presence of a sub-vertical faulted region, potentially weak, N50°E oriented beneath the western sector of Mt. Etna. This structure could be brought closer to failure thereby generating seismic swarms as the effect of elastic stress transfer induced by movement and/or overpressure of magmatic masses within the upper crust under the volcano.

    Description: An earthquake of Mw=6.3 struck L’Aquila town (central Italy) on April 6, 2009 rupturing an approximately 18 km long SW-dipping normal fault. The aftershock area extended for a length of more than 35 km and included major aftershocks on April 7 and 9, and thousands of minor events. Surface faulting occurred along the SW-dipping Paganica fault with a continuous extent of ~2.5 km. Ruptures consist of open cracks and vertical dislocations or warps (0.1 maximum throw) with an orientation of N130°-N140°. Small triggered slip and shaking effects also took place along nearby synthetic and antithetic normal faults. The observed limited extent, and small surface displacement, of the Paganica ruptures with respect to the height of the fault scarps and vertical throws of paleoearthquakes along faults in the area, puts the faulting associated with the L’Aquila earthquake in perspective with respect to the maximum expected magnitude, and the regional seismic hazard.

    Description: Methane soil flux measurements have been made in 38 sites at the geothermal system of Sousaki (Greece) with the closed chamber method. Fluxes range from –47.6 to 29,150 mg m-2 d-1 and the diffuse CH4 output of the system has been estimated at 19 t a-1. Contemporaneous CO2 flux measurements showed a moderate positive correlation between CO2 and CH4 fluxes. Comparison of the CO2/CH4 soil flux ratios with the CO2/CH4 ratio of the gases of the main gas manifestations provided evidence for methanotrophic activity within the soil. Laboratory CH4 consumption experiments confirmed the presence of methanotrophic microorganisms in soil samples collected at Sousaki. Consumption was generally in the range from –4.9 to –38.9 pmolCH4 h-1 g-1 but could sometimes reach extremely high values (–33,000 pmolCH4 h-1 g-1.). These results are consistent with recent studies on other geothermal systems that revealed the existence of thermoacidophilic bacteria exerting methanotrophic activity in hot, acid soils, thereby reducing methane emissions to the atmosphere.

    Description: We present a new crustal model for the European plate, derived from collection and critical integration of information selected from the literature. The model covers the whole European plate from North Africa to the North Pole (20N - 90N) and from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge to the Urals (40W - 70E). The chosen parameterization represents the crust in three layers (sediments, upper crust and lower crust), and describes the 3D geometry of the interfaces and seismologically-relevant parameters — isotropic P- and S-wave velocity, plus density — with a resolution of 0.5 × 0.5 degrees on a geographical latitude-longitude grid. We selected global and local models, derived from geological assumptions, active seismic experiments, surface-wave studies, noise correlation, receiver functions. Model EPcrust presents significant advantages with respect to previous models: it covers the whole European plate; it is a complete and internally-consistent model (with all the parameters provided, also for the sedimentary layer); it is reproducible; it is easy to update in the future by adding new contributions; and it is available in a convenient digital format. EPcrust could be used to account for crustal structure in seismic wave propagation modeling at continental scale or to compute linearized crustal corrections in continental-scale seismic tomography, gravity studies, dynamic topography and other applications that require a reliable crustal structure. Because of its resolution, our model is not suited for local-scale studies, such as the computation of earthquake scenarios, where more detailed knowledge of the structure is required. We plan to update the model as new data will become available, and possibly improve its resolution for selected areas in the future.

    Description: Efforts to collaboratively manage the risk of flooding are ultimately based on individuals learning about risks, the decision process, and the effectiveness of decisions made in prior situations. This article argues that much can be learned about a governance setting by explicitly evaluating the relationships through which influential individuals and their immediate contacts receive and send information to one another. We define these individuals as “brokers,” and the networks that emerge from their interactions as “learning spaces.” The aim of this article is to develop strategies to identify and evaluate the properties of a broker's learning space that are indicative of a collaborative flood risk management arrangement. The first part of this article introduces a set of indicators, and presents strategies to employ this list so as to systematically identify brokers, and compare their learning spaces. The second part outlines the lessons from an evaluation that explored cases in two distinct flood risk management settings in Germany. The results show differences in the observed brokers' learning spaces. The contacts and interactions of the broker in Baden‐Württemberg imply a collaborative setting. In contrast, learning space of the broker in North Rhine‐Westphalia lacks the same level of diversity and polycentricity.

    Description: In the past two decades, most of the steps in a macromolecular crystallography experiment have undergone tremendous development with respect to speed, feasibility and increase of throughput. The part of the experimental workflow that is still a bottleneck, despite significant efforts, involves the manipulation and harvesting of the crystals for the diffraction experiment. Here, a novel low‐cost device is presented that functions as a cover for 96‐well crystallization plates. This device enables access to the individual experiments one at a time by its movable parts, while minimizing evaporation of all other experiments of the plate. In initial tests, drops of many typically used crystallization cocktails could be successfully protected for up to 6 h. Therefore, the manipulation and harvesting of crystals is straightforward for the experimenter, enabling significantly higher throughput. This is useful for many macromolecular crystallography experiments, especially multi‐crystal screening campaigns.

    Description: Multiple‐Edge Anomalous Diffraction (MEAD) has been applied to various quaternary sulfosalts belonging to the adamantine compound family in order to validate the distribution of copper, zinc and iron cations in the structure. Semiconductors from this group of materials are promising candidates for photovoltaic applications. Their properties strongly depend on point defects, in particular related to cation order–disorder. However, Cu+, Zn2+ and Fe2+ have very similar scattering factors and are all but indistinguishable in usual X‐ray diffraction experiments. Anomalous diffraction utilizes the dependency of the atomic scattering factors f′ and f′′ of the energy of the radiation, especially close to the element‐specific absorption edges. In the MEAD technique, individual Bragg peaks are tracked over an absorption edge. The intensity changes depending on the structure factor can be highly characteristic for Miller indices selected for a specific structural problem, but require very exact measurements. Beamline KMC‐2 at synchrotron BESSY II, Berlin, has been recently upgraded for this technique. Anomalous X‐ray powder diffraction and XAFS compliment the data. Application of this technique confirmed established cation distribution in Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) and Cu2FeSnS4 (CFTS). In contrast to the literature, cation distribution in Cu2ZnSiSe4 (CZSiSe) is shown to adopt a highly ordered wurtz‐kesterite structure type.

    Description: The growth of diffraction‐quality crystals and experimental phasing remain two of the main bottlenecks in protein crystallography. Here, the high‐affinity copper(II)‐binding tripeptide GHK was fused to the N‐terminus of a GFP variant and an MBP‐FG peptide fusion. The GHK tag promoted crystallization, with various residues (His, Asp, His/Pro) from symmetry molecules completing the copper(II) square‐pyramidal coordination sphere. Rapid structure determination by copper SAD phasing could be achieved, even at a very low Bijvoet ratio or after significant radiation damage. When collecting highly redundant data at a wavelength close to the copper absorption edge, residual S‐atom positions could also be located in log‐likelihood‐gradient maps and used to improve the phases. The GHK copper SAD method provides a convenient way of both crystallizing and phasing macromolecular structures, and will complement the current trend towards native sulfur SAD and MR‐SAD phasing.

    Description: Recently, the authors reported on the development of crystallinity in mixed‐tacticity polyhydroxybutyrates. Comparable values reported in the literature vary depending on the manner of determination, the discrepancies being partially attributable to scattering from paracrystalline portions of the material. These portions can be qualified by peak profile fitting or quantified by allocation of scattered X‐ray intensities. However, the latter requires a good quality of the former, which in turn must additionally account for peak broadening inherent in the measurement setup, and due to limited crystallite sizes and the possible presence of microstrain. Since broadening due to microstrain and paracrystalline order both scale with scattering vector, they are easily confounded. In this work, a method to directionally discern these two influences on the peak shape in a Rietveld refinement is presented. Allocating intensities to amorphous, bulk and paracrystalline portions with changing tactic disturbance provided internal validations of the obtained directional numbers. In addition, the correlation between obtained thermal factors and Young's moduli, determined in earlier work, is discussed.

    Description: Two evaluation concepts for nondestructive depth‐resolved X‐ray residual stress analysis in the near‐surface region of materials with cubic symmetry and nearly single crystalline structure are introduced by simulated examples. Both concepts are based on the same data acquisition strategy, which consists in the determination of lattice‐spacing depth profiles along the ⟨hkl⟩ poles by stepwise sample rotation around the scattering vector. Segmentation of these profiles parallel to the sample surface provides the lattice strain state as a function of depth. The first evaluation concept extends the crystallite group method developed for materials with pronounced crystallographic texture by the feature of depth resolution and can be applied to samples with arbitrary orientation. The second evaluation concept, which adapts the linear regression approach of the sin2ψ method for the case of single crystalline materials, is restricted to samples with (001) orientation. The influence of the strain‐free lattice parameter a0 on residual stress analysis using both evaluation concepts is discussed on the basis of explicitly derived relations.

    Description: Dichroism is one of the most important optical effects in both the visible and the X‐ray range. Besides absorption, scattering can also contribute to dichroism. This paper demonstrates that, based on the example of polyimide, materials can show tiny dichroism even far from electronic resonances due to scattering. Although the effect is small, it can lead to a measurable polarization change and might have influence on highly sensitive polarimetric experiments.

    Description: The complete elastic stiffness tensor of thiourea has been determined from thermal diffuse scattering (TDS) using high‐energy photons (100 keV). Comparison with earlier data confirms a very good agreement of the tensor coefficients. In contrast with established methods to obtain elastic stiffness coefficients (e.g. Brillouin spectroscopy, inelastic X‐ray or neutron scattering, ultrasound spectroscopy), their determination from TDS is faster, does not require large samples or intricate sample preparation, and is applicable to opaque crystals. Using high‐energy photons extends the applicability of the TDS‐based approach to organic compounds which would suffer from radiation damage at lower photon energies.

    Description: X‐ray reflectivity (XRR) is a powerful and popular scattering technique that can give valuable insight into the growth behavior of thin films. This study shows how a simple artificial neural network model can be used to determine the thickness, roughness and density of thin films of different organic semiconductors [diindenoperylene, copper(II) phthalocyanine and α‐sexithiophene] on silica from their XRR data with millisecond computation time and with minimal user input or a priori knowledge. For a large experimental data set of 372 XRR curves, it is shown that a simple fully connected model can provide good results with a mean absolute percentage error of 8–18% when compared with the results obtained by a genetic least mean squares fit using the classical Parratt formalism. Furthermore, current drawbacks and prospects for improvement are discussed.

Apparent singularities, all removable, are discussed in detail. Cancellation near the singularities causes a loss of precision that can be avoided by using series expansions. An important application domain is small‐angle scattering by nanocrystals.

    Description: ROBL‐II provides four different experimental stations to investigate actinide and other alpha‐ and beta‐emitting radionuclides at the new EBS storage ring of ESRF within an energy range of 3 to 35 keV. The XAFS station consists of a highly automatized, high sample throughput installation in a glovebox, to measure EXAFS and conventional XANES of samples routinely at temperatures down to 10 K, and with a detection limit in the sub‐p.p.m. range. The XES station with its five bent‐crystal analyzer, Johann‐type setup with Rowland circles of 1.0 and 0.5 m radii provides high‐energy resolution fluorescence detection (HERFD) for XANES, XES, and RIXS measurements, covering both actinide L and M edges together with other elements accessible in the 3 to 20 keV energy range. The six‐circle heavy duty goniometer of XRD‐1 is equipped for both high‐resolution powder diffraction as well as surface‐sensitive CTR and RAXR techniques. Single crystal diffraction, powder diffraction with high temporal resolution, as well as X‐ray tomography experiments can be performed at a Pilatus 2M detector stage (XRD‐2). Elaborate radioprotection features enable a safe and easy exchange of samples between the four different stations to allow the combination of several methods for an unprecedented level of information on radioactive samples for both fundamental and applied actinide and environmental research.

    Description: The ATSAS software suite encompasses a number of programs for the processing, visualization, analysis and modelling of small‐angle scattering data, with a focus on the data measured from biological macromolecules. Here, new developments in the ATSAS 3.0 package are described. They include IMSIM, for simulating isotropic 2D scattering patterns; IMOP, to perform operations on 2D images and masks; DATRESAMPLE, a method for variance estimation of structural invariants through parametric resampling; DATFT, which computes the pair distance distribution function by a direct Fourier transform of the scattering data; PDDFFIT, to compute the scattering data from a pair distance distribution function, allowing comparison with the experimental data; a new module in DATMW for Bayesian consensus‐based concentration‐independent molecular weight estimation; DATMIF, an ab initio shape analysis method that optimizes the search model directly against the scattering data; DAMEMB, an application to set up the initial search volume for multiphase modelling of membrane proteins; ELLLIP, to perform quasi‐atomistic modelling of liposomes with elliptical shapes; NMATOR, which models conformational changes in nucleic acid structures through normal mode analysis in torsion angle space; DAMMIX, which reconstructs the shape of an unknown intermediate in an evolving system; and LIPMIX and BILMIX, for modelling multilamellar and asymmetric lipid vesicles, respectively. In addition, technical updates were deployed to facilitate maintainability of the package, which include porting the PRIMUS graphical interface to Qt5, updating SASpy – a PyMOL plugin to run a subset of ATSAS tools – to be both Python 2 and 3 compatible, and adding utilities to facilitate mmCIF compatibility in future ATSAS releases.     Description: Most common machine learning (ML) algorithms usually work well on balanced training sets, that is, datasets in which all classes are approximately represented equally. Otherwise, the accuracy estimates may be unreliable and classes with only a few values are often misclassified or neglected. This is known as a class imbalance problem in machine learning and datasets that do not meet this criterion are referred to as imbalanced data. Most datasets of soil classes are, therefore, imbalanced data. One of our main objectives is to compare eight resampling strategies that have been developed to counteract the imbalanced data problem. We compared the performance of five of the most common ML algorithms with the resampling approaches. The highest increase in prediction accuracy was achieved with SMOTE (the synthetic minority oversampling technique). In comparison to the baseline prediction on the original dataset, we achieved an increase of about 10, 20 and 10% in the overall accuracy, kappa index and F‐score, respectively. Regarding the ML approaches, random forest (RF) showed the best performance with an overall accuracy, kappa index and F‐score of 66, 60 and 57%, respectively. Moreover, the combination of RF and SMOTE improved the accuracy of the individual soil classes, compared to RF trained on the original dataset and allowed better prediction of soil classes with a low number of samples in the corresponding soil profile database, in our case for Chernozems. Our results show that balancing existing soil legacy data using synthetic sampling strategies can significantly improve the prediction accuracy in digital soil mapping (DSM). Highlights Spatial distribution of soil classes in Iran can be predicted using machine learning (ML) algorithms. The synthetic minority oversampling technique overcomes the drawback of imbalanced and highly biased soil legacy data. When combining a random forest model with synthetic sampling strategies the prediction accuracy of the soil model improves significantly. The resulting new soil map of Iran has a much higher spatial resolution compared to existing maps and displays new soil classes that have not yet been mapped in Iran.

    Description: Serial crystallography records still diffraction patterns from single, randomly oriented crystals, then merges data from hundreds or thousands of them to form a complete data set. To process the data, the diffraction patterns must first be indexed, equivalent to determining the orientation of each crystal. A novel automatic indexing algorithm is presented, which in tests usually gives significantly higher indexing rates than alternative programs currently available for this task. The algorithm does not require prior knowledge of the lattice parameters but can make use of that information if provided, and also allows indexing of diffraction patterns generated by several crystals in the beam. Cases with a small number of Bragg spots per pattern appear to particularly benefit from the new approach. The algorithm has been implemented and optimized for fast execution, making it suitable for real‐time feedback during serial crystallography experiments. It is implemented in an open‐source C++ library and distributed under the LGPLv3 licence. An interface to it has been added to the CrystFEL software suite.

    Description: A crystallographic indexing algorithm, pinkIndexer, is presented for the analysis of snapshot diffraction patterns. It can be used in a variety of contexts including measurements made with a monochromatic radiation source, a polychromatic source or with radiation of very short wavelength. As such, the algorithm is particularly suited to automated data processing for two emerging measurement techniques for macromolecular structure determination: serial pink‐beam X‐ray crystallography and serial electron crystallography, which until now lacked reliable programs for analyzing many individual diffraction patterns from crystals of uncorrelated orientation. The algorithm requires approximate knowledge of the unit‐cell parameters of the crystal, but not the wavelengths associated with each Bragg spot. The use of pinkIndexer is demonstrated by obtaining 1005 lattices from a published pink‐beam serial crystallography data set that had previously yielded 140 indexed lattices. Additionally, in tests on experimental serial crystallography diffraction data recorded with quasi‐monochromatic X‐rays and with electrons the algorithm indexed more patterns than other programs tested.

    Description: CRM1 is a nuclear export receptor that has been intensively targeted over the last decade for the development of antitumor and antiviral drugs. Structural analysis of several inhibitor compounds bound to CRM1 revealed that their mechanism of action relies on the covalent modification of a critical cysteine residue (Cys528 in the human receptor) located in the nuclear export signal‐binding cleft. This study presents the crystal structure of human CRM1, covalently modified by 2‐mercaptoethanol on Cys528, in complex with RanGTP at 2.58 Å resolution. The results demonstrate that buffer components can interfere with the characterization of cysteine‐dependent inhibitor compounds.

    Description: The application of biochar to agricultural soils to increase nutrient availability, crop production and carbon sequestration has gained increasing interest but data from field experiments on temperate, marginal soils are still under‐represented. In the current study, biochar, produced from organic residues (digestates) from a biogas plant, was applied with and without digestates at low (3.4 t ha−1) and intermediate (17.1 t ha−1) rates to two acidic and sandy soils in northern Germany that are used for corn (Zea mays L.) production. Soil nutrient availability, crop yields, microbial biomass and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from heterotrophic respiration were measured over two consecutive years. The effects of biochar application depended on the intrinsic properties of the two tested soils and the biochar application rates. Although the soils at the fallow site, with initially low nutrient concentrations, showed a significant increase in pH, soil nutrients and crop yield after low biochar application rates, a similar response was found at the cornfield site only after application of substantially larger amounts of biochar. The effect of a single dose of biochar at the beginning of the experiment diminished over time but was still detectable after 2 years. Whereas plant available nutrient concentrations increased after biochar application, the availability of potentially phytotoxic trace elements (Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr) decreased significantly, and although slight increases in microbial biomass carbon and heterotrophic CO2 fluxes were observed after biochar application, they were mostly not significant. The results indicate that the application of relatively small amounts of biochar could have positive effects on plant available nutrients and crop yields of marginal arable soils and may decrease the need for mineral fertilizers while simultaneously increasing the sequestration of soil organic carbon. Highlights A low rate of biochar increased plant available nutrients and crop yield on marginal soils. Biochar application reduced the availability of potentially harmful trace elements. Heterotrophic respiration showed no clear response to biochar application. Biochar application may reduce fertilizer need and increase carbon sequestration on marginal soils.

    Description: Owing to the development of X‐ray focusing optics during the past decades, synchrotron‐based X‐ray microscopy techniques allow the study of specimens with unprecedented spatial resolution, down to 10 nm, using soft and medium X‐ray photon energies, though at the expense of the field of view (FOV). One of the approaches to increase the FOV to square millimetres is raster‐scanning of the specimen using a single nanoprobe; however, this results in a long data acquisition time. This work employs an array of inclined biconcave parabolic refractive multi‐lenses (RMLs), fabricated by deep X‐ray lithography and electroplating to generate a large number of long X‐ray foci. Since the FOV is limited by the pattern height if a single RML is used by impinging X‐rays parallel to the substrate, many RMLs at regular intervals in the orthogonal direction were fabricated by tilted exposure. By inclining the substrate correspondingly to the tilted exposure, 378000 X‐ray line foci were generated with a length in the centimetre range and constant intervals in the sub‐micrometre range. The capability of this new X‐ray focusing device was first confirmed using ray‐tracing simulations and then using synchrotron radiation at BL20B2 of SPring‐8, Japan. Taking account of the fact that the refractive lens is effective for focusing high‐energy X‐rays, the experiment was performed with 35 keV X‐rays. Next, by scanning a specimen through the line foci, this device was used to perform large FOV pixel super‐resolution scanning transmission hard X‐ray microscopy (PSR‐STHXM) with a 780 ± 40 nm spatial resolution within an FOV of 1.64 cm × 1.64 cm (limited by the detector area) and a total scanning time of 4 min. Biomedical implant abutments fabricated via selective laser melting using Ti–6Al–4V medical alloy were measured by PSR‐STHXM, suggesting its unique potential for studying extended and thick specimens. Although the super‐resolution function was realized in one dimension in this study, it can be expanded to two dimensions by aligning a pair of presented devices orthogonally.

    Description: A new concept for temporal gating of synchrotron X‐ray pulses based on laser‐induced thermal transient gratings is presented. First experimental tests of the concept yield a diffraction efficiency of 0.18%; however, the calculations indicate a theoretical efficiency and contrast of 〉30% and 10−5, respectively. The full efficiency of the pulse picker has not been reached yet due to a long‐range thermal deformation of the sample after absorption of the excitation laser. This method can be implemented in a broad spectral range (100 eV to 20 keV) and is only minimally invasive to an existing setup.

    Description: The time‐resolved hard X‐ray diffraction endstation KMC‐3 XPP for optical pump/X‐ray probe experiments at the electron storage ring BESSY II is dedicated to investigating the structural response of thin film samples and heterostructures after their excitation with ultrashort laser pulses and/or electric field pulses. It enables experiments with access to symmetric and asymmetric Bragg reflections via a four‐circle diffractometer and it is possible to keep the sample in high vacuum and vary the sample temperature between ∼15 K and 350 K. The femtosecond laser system permanently installed at the beamline allows for optical excitation of the sample at 1028 nm. A non‐linear optical setup enables the sample excitation also at 514 nm and 343 nm. A time‐resolution of 17 ps is achieved with the `low‐α' operation mode of the storage ring and an electronic variation of the delay between optical pump and hard X‐ray probe pulse conveniently accesses picosecond to microsecond timescales. Direct time‐resolved detection of the diffracted hard X‐ray synchrotron pulses use a gated area pixel detector or a fast point detector in single photon counting mode. The range of experiments that are reliably conducted at the endstation and that detect structural dynamics of samples excited by laser pulses or electric fields are presented.

    Description: Social inequalities lead to flood resilience inequalities across social groups, a topic that requires improved documentation and understanding. The objective of this paper is to attend to these differences by investigating self‐stated flood recovery across genders in Vietnam as a conceptual replication of earlier results from Germany. This study employs a regression‐based analysis of 1,010 respondents divided between a rural coastal and an urban community in Thua Thien‐Hue province. The results highlight an important set of recovery process‐related variables. The set of relevant variables is similar across genders in terms of inclusion and influence, and includes age, social capital, internal and external support after a flood, perceived severity of previous flood impacts, and the perception of stress‐resilience. However, women were affected more heavily by flooding in terms of longer recovery times, which should be accounted for in risk management. Overall, the studied variables perform similarly in Vietnam and Germany. This study, therefore, conceptually replicates previous results suggesting that women display slightly slower recovery levels as well as that psychological variables influence recovery rates more than adverse flood impacts. This provides an indication of the results' potentially robust nature due to the different socio‐environmental contexts in Germany and Vietnam.

    Description: The crystal structures of sodium ethoxide (sodium ethanolate, NaOEt), sodium n‐propoxide (sodium n‐propanolate, NaOnPr), sodium n‐butoxide (sodium n‐butanolate, NaOnBu) and sodium n‐pentoxide (sodium n‐amylate, NaOnAm) were determined from powder X‐ray diffraction data. NaOEt crystallizes in space group P421m, with Z = 2, and the other alkoxides crystallize in P4/nmm, with Z = 2. To resolve space‐group ambiguities, a Bärnighausen tree was set up, and Rietveld refinements were performed with different models. In all structures, the Na and O atoms form a quadratic net, with the alkyl groups pointing outwards on both sides (anti‐PbO type). The alkyl groups are disordered. The disorder becomes even more pronounced with increasing chain length. Recrystallization from the corresponding alcohols yielded four sodium alkoxide solvates: sodium ethoxide ethanol disolvate (NaOEt·2EtOH), sodium n‐propoxide n‐propanol disolvate (NaOnPr·2nPrOH), sodium isopropoxide isopropanol pentasolvate (NaOiPr·5iPrOH) and sodium tert‐amylate tert‐amyl alcohol monosolvate (NaOtAm·tAmOH, tAm = 2‐methyl‐2‐butyl). Their crystal structures were determined by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction. All these solvates form chain structures consisting of Na+, –O− and –OH groups, encased by alkyl groups. The hydrogen‐bond networks diverge widely among the solvate structures. The hydrogen‐bond topology of the iPrOH network in NaOiPr·5iPrOH shows branched hydrogen bonds and differs considerably from the networks in pure crystalline iPrOH.

These compounds crystallize in an anti‐PbO structure in the space groups P21m and P4/nmm.     Description: Nitrogen (N) fertilization is the major contributor to nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from agricultural soil, especially in post‐harvest seasons. This study was carried out to investigate whether ryegrass serving as cover crop affects soil N2O emissions and denitrifier community size. A microcosm experiment was conducted with soil planted with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and bare soil, each with four levels of N fertilizer (0, 5, 10 and 20 g N m−2; applied as calcium ammonium nitrate). The closed‐chamber approach was used to measure soil N2O fluxes. Real‐time PCR was used to estimate the biomass of bacteria and fungi and the abundance of genes involved in denitrification in soil. The results showed that the presence of ryegrass decreased the nitrate content in soil. Cumulative N2O emissions of soil with grass were lower than in bare soil at 5 and 10 g N m−2. Fertilization levels did not affect the abundance of soil bacteria and fungi. Soil with grass showed greater abundances of bacteria and fungi, as well as microorganisms carrying narG, napA, nirK, nirS and nosZ clade I genes. It is concluded that ryegrass serving as a cover crop holds the potential to mitigate soil N2O emissions in soils with moderate or high NO3− concentrations. This highlights the importance of cover crops for the reduction of N2O emissions from soil, particularly following N fertilization. Future research should explore the full potential of ryegrass to reduce soil N2O emissions under field conditions as well as in different soils. Highlights This study was to investigate whether ryegrass serving as cover crop affects soil N2O emissions and denitrifier community size; Plant reduced soil N substrates on one side, but their root exudates stimulated denitrification on the other side; N2O emissions were lower in soil with grass than bare soil at medium fertilizer levels, and growing grass stimulated the proliferation of almost all the denitrifying bacteria except nosZ clade II; Ryegrass serving as a cover crop holds the potential to mitigate soil N2O emissions.

    Description: Small‐angle X‐ray scattering from GaN nanowires grown on Si(111) is measured in the grazing‐incidence geometry and modelled by means of a Monte Carlo simulation that takes into account the orientational distribution of the faceted nanowires and the roughness of their side facets. It is found that the scattering intensity at large wavevectors does not follow Porod's law I(q) ∝ q−4. The intensity depends on the orientation of the side facets with respect to the incident X‐ray beam. It is maximum when the scattering vector is directed along a facet normal, reminiscent of surface truncation rod scattering. At large wavevectors q, the scattering intensity is reduced by surface roughness. A root‐mean‐square roughness of 0.9 nm, which is the height of just 3–4 atomic steps per micrometre‐long facet, already gives rise to a strong intensity reduction.

    Description: Recent developments in cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo‐EM) have enabled structural studies of large macromolecular complexes at resolutions previously only attainable using macromolecular crystallography. Although a number of methods can already assist in de novo building of models into high‐resolution cryo‐EM maps, automated and reliable map interpretation remains a challenge. Presented here is a systematic study of the accuracy of models built into cryo‐EM maps using ARP/wARP. It is demonstrated that the local resolution is a good indicator of map interpretability, and for the majority of the test cases ARP/wARP correctly builds 90% of main‐chain fragments in regions where the local resolution is 4.0 Å or better. It is also demonstrated that the coordinate accuracy for models built into cryo‐EM maps is comparable to that of X‐ray crystallographic models at similar local cryo‐EM and crystallographic resolutions. The model accuracy also correlates with the refined atomic displacement parameters.

    Description: Carbonates containing CO4 groups as building blocks have recently been discovered. A new orthocarbonate, Sr2CO4 is synthesized at 92 GPa and at a temperature of 2500 K. Its crystal structure was determined by in situ synchrotron single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction, selecting a grain from a polycrystalline sample. Strontium orthocarbonate crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system (space group Pnma) with CO4, SrO9 and SrO11 polyhedra as the main building blocks. It is isostructural to Ca2CO4. DFT calculations reproduce the experimental findings very well and have, therefore, been used to predict the equation of state, Raman and IR spectra, and to assist in the discussion of bonding in this compound.

    Description: Small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) is an established method for studying nanostructured systems and in particular biological macromolecules in solution. To obtain element‐specific information about the sample, anomalous SAXS (ASAXS) exploits changes of the scattering properties of selected atoms when the energy of the incident X‐rays is close to the binding energy of their electrons. While ASAXS is widely applied to condensed matter and inorganic systems, its use for biological macromolecules is challenging because of the weak anomalous effect. Biological objects are often only available in small quantities and are prone to radiation damage, which makes biological ASAXS measurements very challenging. The BioSAXS beamline P12 operated by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) at the PETRA III storage ring (DESY, Hamburg) is dedicated to studies of weakly scattering objects. Here, recent developments at P12 allowing for ASAXS measurements are presented. The beamline control, data acquisition and data reduction pipeline of the beamline were adapted to conduct ASAXS experiments. Modelling tools were developed to compute ASAXS patterns from atomic models, which can be used to analyze the data and to help designing appropriate data collection strategies. These developments are illustrated with ASAXS experiments on different model systems performed at the P12 beamline.

    Description: An earthquake of Mw = 6.3 struck L Aquila town (central Italy) on 6 April 2009 rupturing an ~18-km-long SW-dipping normal fault. The aftershock area extended for a length of more than 35 km and included major aftershocks on 7 and 9 April and thousands of minor events. Surface faulting occurred along the SW-dipping Paganica fault with a continuous extent of ~2.5 km. Ruptures consist of open cracks and vertical dislocations or warps (0.1m maximum throw) with an orientation of N130°–140°. Small triggered slip and shaking effects also took place along nearby synthetic and antithetic normal faults. The observed limited extent and small surface displacement of the Paganica ruptures with respect to the height of the fault scarps and vertical throws of palaeo-earthquakes along faults in the area put the faulting associated with the L' Aquila earthquake in perspective with respect to the maximum expected magnitude and the regional seismic hazard.

    Description: Binary III–V nitrides such as AlN, GaN and InN in the wurtzite‐type structure have long been considered as potent semiconducting materials because of their optoelectronic properties, amongst others. With rising concerns over the utilization of scarce elements, a replacement of the trivalent cations by others in ternary and multinary nitrides has led to the development of different variants of nitrides and oxide nitrides crystallizing in lower‐symmetry variants of wurtzite. This work presents the symmetry relationships between these structural types specific to nitrides and oxide nitrides and updates some prior work on this matter. The non‐existence of compounds crystallizing in Pmc21, formally the highest subgroup of the wurtzite type fulfilling Pauling's rules for 1:1:2 stoichiometries, has been puzzling scientists for a while; a rationalization is given, from a crystallographic basis, of why this space group is unlikely to be adopted.

    Description: An approach for the comparison of pair distribution functions (PDFs) has been developed using a similarity measure based on cross‐correlation functions. The PDF is very sensitive to changes in the local structure, i.e. small deviations in the structure can cause large signal shifts and significant discrepancies between the PDFs. Therefore, a comparison based on pointwise differences (e.g. R values and difference curves) may lead to the assumption that the investigated PDFs as well as the corresponding structural models are not in agreement at all, whereas a careful visual inspection of the investigated structural models and corresponding PDFs may reveal a relatively good match. To quantify the agreement of different PDFs for those cases an alternative approach is introduced: the similarity measure based on cross‐correlation functions. In this paper, the power of this application of the similarity measure to the analysis of PDFs is highlighted. The similarity measure is compared with the classical Rwp values as representative of the comparison based on pointwise differences as well as with the Pearson product‐moment correlation coefficient, using polymorph IV of barbituric acid as an example.

    Description: The high‐precision X‐ray diffraction setup for work with diamond anvil cells (DACs) in interaction chamber 2 (IC2) of the High Energy Density instrument of the European X‐ray Free‐Electron Laser is described. This includes beamline optics, sample positioning and detector systems located in the multipurpose vacuum chamber. Concepts for pump–probe X‐ray diffraction experiments in the DAC are described and their implementation demonstrated during the First User Community Assisted Commissioning experiment. X‐ray heating and diffraction of Bi under pressure, obtained using 20 fs X‐ray pulses at 17.8 keV and 2.2 MHz repetition, is illustrated through splitting of diffraction peaks, and interpreted employing finite element modeling of the sample chamber in the DAC.

    Description: The refractive index of a y‐cut SiO2 crystal surface is reconstructed from orientation‐dependent soft X‐ray reflectometry measurements in the energy range from 45 to 620 eV. Owing to the anisotropy of the crystal structure in the (100) and (001) directions, a significant deviation of the measured reflectance at the Si L2,3 and O K absorption edges is observed. The anisotropy in the optical constants reconstructed from these data is also confirmed by ab initio Bethe–Salpeter equation calculations for the O K edge. This new experimental data set expands the existing literature data for quartz crystal optical constants significantly, particularly in the near‐edge regions.

    Description: This thematic issue of Geofluids includes 11 papers representing the three main topics discussed in the 10th edition of the International Conference on Gas Geochemistry (ICGG-10): (i) gas in petroleum systems and seepage, (ii) gas in geothermal systems and volcanoes and (iii) gas, seismicity and geohazards. ICGG-10 was held in 2009 in Romania, a country extraordinarily rich in surface gas manifestations, that offers innumerable opportunities for innovative studies on gas geochemistry. We briefly describe the present knowledge on gases occurring both in petroliferous sedimentary basins and geothermal areas of Romania. The 11 contributions of this special issue, which include data from eight countries, are then summarised. Based on these papers and other works presented at the ICGG-10, we find that significant advances in analytical capabilities, data treating and interpretation have led to innovative insights into the origin, distribution and environmental impact of gases migrating to the Earth’s surface. It is increasingly clear, in particular, that gas geochemistry can be more effective for petroleum exploration, volcano-tectonic, geodynamic and environmental studies, if multiparametric studies are performed and the data are interpreted in the geological context.

    Description: Gas seepage from petroleum basins is the second largest natural source of methane to the atmosphere, after wetlands. The uncertainty in global emission estimates should be reduced by extending the flux database which is fundamental for defining the emission factors and the actual area of seepage adopted for up-scaling. As a contribution to this goal, we report a new seepage data-set for the Transylvanian Basin, one of the largest natural gas producing regions of Europe, that is characterized by the widespread occurrence of natural leakages of gas at the surface, including at least 73 mud volcanoes and gas seeps. In this study, methane flux was measured using closed-chambers, from 12 seepage sites, in correspondence with focused gas vents (mud volcano craters, bubbling pools, and flammable gas leaks), in the soil surrounding the vents, and at 15 sites located far from macroseep zones but close to gas fields. Fluxes from individual vents (macro-seeps) were found to reach orders of kg CH4 m)2 day)1 (up to 12 kg m)2 day)1) and diffuse fluxes from soils (miniseepage) were found to be up to a few g CH4 m)2 day)1. Far from seep zones, positive CH4 fluxes (microseepage) may occur locally, typically on the order of tens to hundreds of mg m)2 day)1. The values, as well as the occurrence of seepage even far from vent zones and in mud volcanoes that are apparently extinct, are coherent with results obtained in other countries. Gas fluxes from macro-seeps and soils may change seasonally, but the interannual variation of the average emission factor was found to be minimal. The total CH4 output for Transylvania macro-seeps is estimated conservatively to be around 680 t year)1; the total geo-CH4 seepage emission from the Transylvania petroleum system could be approximately 40 · 103 t year)1, and at least 100 · 103 t year)1 for all Romanian petroleum systems, that is roughly 10% of the total anthropogenic CH4 emission in the country.

    Description: Mixed ionic electronic conducting ceramics Nd6−yWO12−δ (δ is the oxygen deficiency) provide excellent stability in harsh environments containing strongly reactive gases such as CO2, CO, H2, H2O or H2S. Due to this chemical stability, they are promising and cost‐efficient candidate materials for gas separation, catalytic membrane reactors and protonic ceramic fuel cell technologies. As in La6−yWO12−δ, the ionic/electronic transport mechanism in Nd6−yWO12−δ is expected to be largely controlled by the crystal structure, the conclusive determination of which is still lacking. This work presents a crystallographic study of Nd5.8WO12−δ and molybdenum‐substituted Nd5.7W0.75Mo0.25O12−δ prepared by the citrate complexation route. High‐resolution synchrotron and neutron powder diffraction data were used in combined Rietveld refinements to unravel the crystal structure of Nd5.8WO12−δ and Nd5.7W0.75Mo0.25O12−δ. Both investigated samples crystallize in a defect fluorite crystal structure with space group Fm3m and doubled unit‐cell parameter due to cation ordering. Mo replaces W at both Wyckoff sites 4a and 48h and is evenly distributed, in contrast with La6−yWO12−δ. X‐ray absorption spectroscopy as a function of partial pressure pO2 in the near‐edge regions excludes oxidation state changes of Nd (Nd3+) and W (W6+) in reducing conditions: the enhanced hydrogen permeation, i.e. ambipolar conduction, observed in Mo‐substituted Nd6−yWO12−δ is therefore explained by the higher Mo reducibility and the creation of additional – disordered – oxygen vacancies.

Combined X‐ray and neutron diffraction refinements and electron probe micro‐analysis were employed to locate Mo atoms in the crystal structure of Nd6−yW1−zMozO12−δ (z = 0, 0.25), while X‐ray absorption spectroscopy in the near‐edge regions confirmed no changes in the oxidation states of Nd and W.

    Description: High‐performance numerical codes are an indispensable tool for hydrogeologists when modeling subsurface flow and transport systems. But as they are written in compiled languages, like C/C++ or Fortran, established software packages are rarely user‐friendly, limiting a wider adoption of such tools. OpenGeoSys (OGS), an open‐source, finite‐element solver for thermo‐hydro‐mechanical–chemical processes in porous and fractured media, is no exception. Graphical user interfaces may increase usability, but do so at a dramatic reduction of flexibility and are difficult or impossible to integrate into a larger workflow. Python offers an optimal trade‐off between these goals by providing a highly flexible, yet comparatively user‐friendly environment for software applications. Hence, we introduce ogs5py, a Python‐API for the OpenGeoSys 5 scientific modeling package. It provides a fully Python‐based representation of an OGS project, a large array of convenience functions for users to interact with OGS and connects OGS to the scientific and computational environment of Python.

    Description: Niobium metal foils were heat‐treated at 900°C under different conditions and in situ investigated with time‐resolved X‐ray absorption fine‐structure (EXAFS and XANES) measurements. The present study aims to mimic the conditions usually applied for heat treatments of Nb materials used for superconducting radiofrequency cavities, in order to better understand the evolving processes during vacuum annealing as well as for heat treatments in controlled dilute gases. Annealing in vacuum in a commercially available cell showed a substantial amount of oxidation, so that a designated new cell was designed and realized, allowing treatments under clean high‐vacuum conditions as well as under well controllable gas atmospheres. The experiments performed under vacuum demonstrated that the original structure of the Nb foils is preserved, while a detailed evaluation of the X‐ray absorption fine‐structure data acquired during treatments in dilute air atmospheres (10−5 mbar to 10−3 mbar) revealed a linear oxidation with the time of the treatment, and an oxidation rate proportional to the oxygen (air) pressure. The structure of the oxide appears to be very similar to that of polycrystalline NbO. The cell also permits controlled exposures to other reactive gases at elevated temperatures; here the Nb foils were exposed to dilute nitrogen atmospheres after a pre‐conditioning of the studied Nb material for one hour under high‐vacuum conditions, in order to imitate typical conditions used for nitrogen doping of cavity materials. Clear structural changes induced by the N2 exposure were found; however, no evidence for the formation of niobium nitride could be derived from the EXAFS and XANES experiments. The presented results establish the feasibility to study the structural changes of the Nb materials in situ during heat treatments in reactive gases with temporal resolution, which are important to better understand the underlaying mechanisms and the dynamics of phase formation during those heat treatments in more detail.

    Description: Transport processes that lead to exchange of mass between surface water and groundwater play a significant role for the ecological functioning of aquatic systems, for hydrological processes and for biogeochemical transformations. In this study, we present a novel integral modeling approach for flow and transport at the sediment–water interface. The model allows us to simultaneously simulate turbulent surface and subsurface flow and transport with the same conceptual approach. For this purpose, a conservative transport equation was implemented to an existing approach that uses an extended version of the Navier–Stokes equations. Based on previous flume studies which investigated the spreading of a dye tracer under neutral, losing and gaining flow conditions the new solver is validated. Tracer distributions of the experiments are in close agreement with the simulations. The simulated flow paths are significantly affected by in‐ and outflowing groundwater flow. The highest velocities within the sediment are found for losing condition, which leads to shorter residence times compared to neutral and gaining conditions. The largest extent of the hyporheic exchange flow is observed under neutral condition. The new solver can be used for further examinations of cases that are not suitable for the conventional coupled models, for example, if Reynolds numbers are larger than 10. Moreover, results gained with the integral solver provide high‐resolution information on pressure and velocity distributions at the rippled streambed, which can be used to improve flow predictions. This includes the extent of hyporheic exchange under varying ambient groundwater flow conditions.

    Description: High‐pressure single‐crystal to 20 GPa and powder diffraction measurements to 50 GPa, show that the structure of Pb2SnO4 strongly distorts on compression with an elongation of one axis. A structural phase transition occurs between 10 GPa and 12 GPa, with a change of space group from Pbam to Pnam. The resistivity decreases by more than six orders of magnitude when pressure is increased from ambient conditions to 50 GPa. This insulator‐to‐semiconductor transition is accompanied by a reversible appearance change from transparent to opaque. Density functional theory‐based calculations show that at ambient conditions the channels in the structure host the stereochemically‐active Pb 6s2 lone electron pairs. On compression the lone electron pairs form bonds between Pb2+ ions. Also provided is an assignment of irreducible representations to the experimentally observed Raman bands.

    Description: Sustainable arable cropping relies on repeated liming. Yet, the associated increase in soil pH can reduce the availability of iron (Fe) to plants. We hypothesized that repeated liming, but not pedogenic processes such as lessivage (i.e., translocation of clay particles), alters the Fe cycle in Luvisol soil, thereby affecting Fe isotope composition in soils and crops. Hence, we analysed Fe concentrations and isotope compositions in soil profiles and winter rye from the long‐term agricultural experimental site in Berlin‐Dahlem, Germany, where a controlled liming trial with three field replicates per treatment has been conducted on Albic Luvisols since 1923. Heterogeneity in subsoil was observed at this site for Fe concentration but not for Fe isotope composition. Lessivage had not affected Fe isotope composition in the soil profiles. The results also showed that almost 100 years of liming lowered the concentration of the HCl‐extractable Fe that was potentially available for plant uptake in the surface soil (0–15 cm) from 1.03 (standard error (SE) 0.03) to 0.94 (SE 0.01) g kg−1. This HCl‐extractable Fe pool contained isotopically lighter Fe (δ56Fe = −0.05 to −0.29‰) than the bulk soil (δ56Fe = −0.08 to 0.08‰). However, its Fe isotope composition was not altered by the long‐term lime application. Liming resulted in relatively lower Fe concentrations in the roots of winter rye. In addition, liming led to a heavier Fe isotope composition of the whole plants compared with those grown in the non‐limed plots (δ56FeWholePlant_ + Lime = −0.12‰, SE 0.03 vs. δ56FeWholePlant_‐Lime = −0.21‰, SE 0.01). This suggests that the elevated soil pH (increased by one unit due to liming) promoted the Fe uptake strategy through complexation of Fe(III) from the rhizosphere, which favoured heavier Fe isotopes. Overall, the present study showed that liming and a related increase in pH did not affect the Fe isotope compositions of the soil, but may influence the Fe isotope composition of plants grown in the soil if they alter their Fe uptake strategy upon the change of Fe availability. Highlights Fe concentrations and stocks, but not Fe isotope compositions, were more heterogeneous in subsoil than in topsoil. Translocation of clay minerals did not result in Fe isotope fractionation in the soil profile of a Luvisol. Liming decreased Fe availability in topsoil, but did not affect its δ56Fe values. Uptake of heavier Fe isotopes by graminaceous crops was more pronounced at elevated pH.

    Description: Heterovalent ternary nitrides are considered one of the promising classes of materials for photovoltaics, combining attractive physical properties with low toxicity and element abundance. One of the front‐runner systems under consideration is ZnSnN2. Although it is nominally a ternary compound, no clear crystallographic evidence for cation ordering has been observed so far. An attempt to elucidate this discrepancy [Quayle (2020). Acta Cryst. A76, 410–420] was the trigger for an intensive discussion between the authors, and an agreement was reached to elaborate on some points in order to set things in perspective. Rather than using a conventional comment–answer scheme, this is published in the form of a joint discussion to celebrate constructive criticism and collegiality.

    Description: X‐SPEC is a high‐flux spectroscopy beamline at the KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) Synchrotron for electron and X‐ray spectroscopy featuring a wide photon energy range. The beamline is equipped with a permanent magnet undulator with two magnetic structures of different period lengths, a focusing variable‐line‐space plane‐grating monochromator, a double‐crystal monochromator and three Kirkpatrick–Baez mirror pairs. By selectively moving these elements in or out of the beam, X‐SPEC is capable of covering an energy range from 70 eV up to 15 keV. The flux of the beamline is maximized by optimizing the magnetic design of the undulator, minimizing the number of optical elements and optimizing their parameters. The beam can be focused into two experimental stations while maintaining the same spot position throughout the entire energy range. The first experimental station is optimized for measuring solid samples under ultra‐high‐vacuum conditions, while the second experimental station allows in situ and operando studies under ambient conditions. Measurement techniques include X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), extended X‐ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and hard X‐ray PES (HAXPES), as well as X‐ray emission spectroscopy (XES) and resonant inelastic X‐ray scattering (RIXS).

    Description: A method for the ab initio crystal structure determination of organic compounds by a fit to the pair distribution function (PDF), without prior knowledge of lattice parameters and space group, has been developed. The method is called `PDF‐Global‐Fit' and is implemented by extension of the program FIDEL (fit with deviating lattice parameters). The structure solution is based on a global optimization approach starting from random structural models in selected space groups. No prior indexing of the powder data is needed. The new method requires only the molecular geometry and a carefully determined PDF. The generated random structures are compared with the experimental PDF and ranked by a similarity measure based on cross‐correlation functions. The most promising structure candidates are fitted to the experimental PDF data using a restricted simulated annealing structure solution approach within the program TOPAS, followed by a structure refinement against the PDF to identify the correct crystal structure. With the PDF‐Global‐Fit it is possible to determine the local structure of crystalline and disordered organic materials, as well as to determine the local structure of unindexable powder patterns, such as nanocrystalline samples, by a fit to the PDF. The success of the method is demonstrated using barbituric acid as an example. The crystal structure of barbituric acid form IV solved and refined by the PDF‐Global‐Fit is in excellent agreement with the published crystal structure data.

    Description: Vibrio species play a crucial role in maintaining the carbon and nitrogen balance between the oceans and the land through their ability to employ chitin as a sole source of energy. This study describes the structural basis for the action of the GH20 β‐N‐acetylglucosaminidase (VhGlcNAcase) in chitin metabolism by Vibrio campbellii (formerly V. harveyi) strain ATCC BAA‐1116. Crystal structures of wild‐type VhGlcNAcase in the absence and presence of the sugar ligand, and of the unliganded D437A mutant, were determined. VhGlcNAcase contains three distinct domains: an N‐terminal carbohydrate‐binding domain linked to a small α+β domain and a C‐terminal (β/α)8 catalytic domain. The active site of VhGlcNAcase has a narrow, shallow pocket that is suitable for accommodating a small chitooligosaccharide. VhGlcNAcase is a monomeric enzyme of 74 kDa, but its crystal structures show two molecules of enzyme per asymmetric unit, in which Gln16 at the dimeric interface of the first molecule partially blocks the entrance to the active site of the neighboring molecule. The GlcNAc unit observed in subsite −1 makes exclusive hydrogen bonds to the conserved residues Arg274, Tyr530, Asp532 and Glu584, while Trp487, Trp546, Trp582 and Trp505 form a hydrophobic wall around the −1 GlcNAc. The catalytic mutants D437A/N and E438A/Q exhibited a drastic loss of GlcNAcase activity, confirming the catalytic role of the acidic pair (Asp437–Glu438).

    Description: Natural gas seeps in the Alpine region are poorly investigated. However, they can provide useful information regarding the hydrocarbon potential of sedimentary Alpine units and related geofluid migration, typically controlled by pressurized gas accumulations and tectonics. A gas seep located near Giswil, in the Swiss Northern Alps, was investigated, for the first time, for molecular and isotopic gas composition, methane flux to the atmosphere, and gas flux variations over time. The analyses indicated that the gas was thermogenic (CH4 〉 96%; d13C1: )35.5& to )40.2&) and showed evidence of subsurface petroleum biodegradation (13C-enriched CO2, and very low C3+ concentrations). The source rock in the region is marine Type II kerogen, which is likely the same as that providing thermogenic gas in the nearby Wilen shallow well, close to Lake Sarnen. However, the lack of d13CCO2 and d13C3 data for that well prevented us from determining whether the Wilen and Giswil seeps are fed by the same reservoir and seepage system. Gas fluxes from the Giswil seep, measured using a closedchamber system, were significant and mainly from two major vents. However, a substantial gas exhalation from the soil occurs diffusely in an area of at least 115 m2, leading to a total CH4 output conservatively estimated to be at least 16 tonnes per year. Gas flux variations, monitored over a 1-month period by a special tent and flowmeter, showed not only daily meteorological oscillations, but also an intrinsic ‘pulsation’ with periods of enhanced flux that lasted 2–6 h each, occurring every few days. The pulses are likely related to episodes of gas pressure build-up and discharge along the seepage system. However, to date, no relationship to seismicity in the active Sarnen strike-slip fault system has been established.

    Description: A series of computed microtomography experiments are reported which were performed by using a third-generation synchrotron radiation source on volcanic rocks from various active hazardous volcanoes in Italy and other volcanic areas in the world. The applied technique allowed the internal structure of the investigated material to be accurately imaged at the micrometre scale and three-dimensional views of the investigated samples to be produced as well as three-dimensional quantitative measurements of textural features. The geometry of the vesicle (gas-filled void) network in volcanic products of both basaltic and trachytic compositions were particularly focused on, as vesicle textures are directly linked to the dynamics of volcano degassing. This investigation provided novel insights into modes of gas exsolution, transport and loss in magmas that were not recognized in previous studies using solely conventional two-dimensional imaging techniques. The results of this study are important to understanding the behaviour of volcanoes and can be combined with other geosciences disciplines to forecast their future activity.

    Description: The resolution function of a spectrometer based on a strongly bent single crystal (bending radius of 10 cm or less) is evaluated. It is shown that the resolution is controlled by two parameters: (i) the ratio of the lattice spacing of the chosen reflection to the crystal thickness and (ii) a single parameter comprising crystal thickness, its bending radius, distance to a detector, and anisotropic elastic constants of the chosen crystal. The results allow the optimization of the parameters of bent‐crystal spectrometers for the hard X‐ray free‐electron laser sources.

    Description: To study and control the incoherent inelastic background in small‐angle neutron scattering, which makes a significant contribution to the detected scattering from hydrocarbon systems, the KWS‐2 small‐angle neutron scattering diffractometer operated by the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) at Heinz‐Maier Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ), Garching, Germany, was equipped with a secondary single‐disc chopper that is placed in front of the sample stage. This makes it possible to record in time‐of‐flight mode the scattered neutrons in the high‐Q regime of the instrument (i.e. short incoming wavelengths and detection distances) and to discard the inelastic component from the measured data. Examples of measurements on different materials routinely used as standard samples, sample containers and solvents in the experiments at KWS‐2 are presented. When only the elastic region of the spectrum is used in the data‐reduction procedure, a decrease of up to two times in the incoherent background of the experimentally measured scattering cross section may be obtained. The proof of principle is demonstrated on a solution of bovine serum albumin in D2O.

    Description: Coping with the growing impacts of flooding in EU countries, a paradigm shift in flood management can be observed, moving from safety‐based towards risk‐based approaches and holistic perspectives. Flood resilience is a common denominator of most of the approaches. In this article, we present the ‘Flood Resilience Rose’ (FRR), a management tool to promote harmonised action towards flood resilience in European regions and beyond. The FRR is a result of a two‐step process. First, based on scientific concepts as well as analysis of relevant policy documents, we identified three ‘levels of operation’. The first level refers to the EU Floods Directive and an extended multi‐layer safety approach, comprising the four different layers of protection, prevention, preparedness and recovery, and related measures to be taken. This level is not independent but depends both on the institutional (second level) and the wider (third level) context. Second, we used surveys, semi‐structured interviews and group discussions during workshops with experts from Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom to validate the definitions and the FRR's practical relevance. The presented FRR is thus the result of rigorous theoretical and practical consideration and provides a tool capable to strengthen flood risk management practice.

    Description: Cubic rare‐earth sesquioxide crystals are strongly demanded host materials for high power lasers, but due to their high melting points investigations on their thermodynamics and the growth of large‐size crystals of high optical quality remain a challenge. Detailed thermal investigations of the ternary system Lu2O3–Sc2O3–Y2O3 revealing a large range of compositions with melting temperatures below 2200°C and a minimum of 2053°C for the composition (Sc0.45Y0.55)2O3 are presented. These reduced temperatures enable for the first time the growth of high optical quality mixed sesquioxide crystals with disordered structure by the conventional Czochralski method from iridium crucibles. An (Er0.07Sc0.50Y0.43)2O3 crystal is successfully grown and characterized with respect to its crystallographic properties as well as its composition, thermal conductivity and optical absorption in the 1 µm range.

    Description: The terpenoid (−)-Istanbulin A is a natural product isolated from Senecio filaginoides DC, one of the 270 species of Senecio (Asteraceae) which occurs in Argentina. The structure and absolute configuration of this compound [9a-hydroxy-3,4a,5-trimethyl-4a,6,7,8a,9,9a-hexahydro-4H,5H-naphtho[2,3-b]-furan-2,8-dione or (4S,5R,8R,10S)-1-oxo-8β-hydroxy-10βH-eremophil-7(11)-en-12,8β-olide, C15H20O4] were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. It proved to be a sesquiterpene lactone showing an eremophilanolide skeleton whose chirality is described as 4S,5R,8R,10S. Structural results were also in agreement with the one- and two-dimensional (1D and 2D) NMR and HR–ESI–MS data, and other complementary spectroscopic information. In addition, (−)-Istanbulin A is a polymorph of the previously reported form of (−)-Istanbulin A, form I; thus, the title compound is denoted form II or polymorph II. Structural data and a literature search allowed the chirality of Istanbulin A to be revisited. The antimicrobial and antifungal activities of (−)-Istanbulin A, form II, were evaluated in order to establish a reference for future comparisons and applications related to specific crystal forms of Istanbulins.

    Description: Two conformational polymorphs of (N,N-dibutyldithiocarbamato-κ2 S,S′)[tris(3,5-diphenylpyrazol-1-yl-κN 2)hydroborato]cobalt(II), [Co(C45H34BN6)(C9H18NS2)] or [TpPh2Co(S2CNBu2)], 1, are accessible by recrystallization from dichloromethane–methanol to give orthorhombic polymorph 1a, while slow evaporation from acetonitrile produces triclinic polymorph 1b. The two polymorphs have been characterized by IR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray crystallography at 150 K. Polymorphs 1a and 1b crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Pbca and the triclinic space group P-1, respectively. The polymorphs have a trans (1a) and cis (1b) orientation of the butyl groups with respect to the S2CN plane of the dithiocarbamate ligand, which results in an intermediate five-coordinate geometry for 1a and a square-pyramidal geometry for 1b. Hirshfeld surface analysis reveals minor differences between the two polymorphs, with 1a exhibiting stronger C—H...S interactions and 1b favouring C—H...π interactions.

    Description: A supramolecular complex, formed by encapsulation of C60 fullerene in a molecular container built from two resorcin[4]arene rims zipped together by peptidic arms hydrogen bonded into a cylindrical β-sheet, was studied by X-ray crystallography, solid-state and solution NMR, EPR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The crystal structure, determined at 100 K, reveals that the complex occupies 422 site symmetry, which is compatible with the molecular symmetry of the container but not of the fullerene molecule, which has only 222 symmetry. The additional crystallographic symmetry leads to a complicated but discrete disorder, which could be resolved and modelled using advanced features of the existing refinement software. Solid-state NMR measurements at 184–333 K indicate that the thermal motion of C60 in this temperature range is fast but has different activation energies at different temperatures, which was attributed to a phase transition, which was confirmed by DSC. Intriguingly, the activation energy for reorientations of C60 in the solid state is very similar for the free and encaged molecules. Also, the rotational diffusion coefficients seem to be very similar or even slightly higher for the encaged fullerene compared to the free molecule. We also found that chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) is not the main relaxation mechanism for the 13C spins of C60 in the studied complex.

    Description: A series of related acetylacetonate–carbonyl–rhodium compounds substituted by functionalized phosphines has been prepared in good to excellent yields by the reaction of [Rh(acac)(CO)2] (acac is acetylacetonate) with the corresponding allyl-, cyanomethyl- or cyanoethyl-substituted phosphines. All compounds were fully characterized by 31P, 1H, 13C NMR and IR spectroscopy. The X-ray structures of (acetylacetonato-κ2 O,O′)(tert-butylphosphanedicarbonitrile-κP)carbonylrhodium(I), [Rh(C5H7O2)(CO)(C8H13N2)] or [Rh(acac)(CO)(tBuP(CH2CN)2}] (2b), (acetylacetonato-κ2 O,O′)carbonyl[3-(diphenylphosphanyl)propanenitrile-κP]rhodium(I), [Rh(C5H7O2)(C15H14N)(CO)] or [Rh(acac)(CO){Ph2P(CH2CH2CN)}] (2h), and (acetylacetonato-κ2 O,O′)carbonyl[3-(di-tert-butylphosphanyl)propanenitrile-κP]rhodium(I), [Rh(C5H7O2)(C11H22N)(CO)] or [Rh(acac)(CO){tBu2P(CH2CH2CN)}] (2i), showed a square-planar geometry around the Rh atom with a significant trans influence over the acetylacetonate moiety, evidenced by long Rh—O bond lengths as expected for poor π-acceptor phosphines. The Rh—P distances displayed an inverse linear dependence with the coupling constants J P-Rh and the IR ν(C[triple-bond]O) bands, which accounts for the Rh—P electronic bonding feature (poor π-acceptors) of these complexes. A combined study from density functional theory (DFT) calculations and an evaluation of the intramolecular H...Rh contacts from X-ray diffraction data allowed a comparison of the conformational preferences of these complexes in the solid state versus the isolated compounds in the gas phase. For 2b, 2h and 2i, an energy-framework study evidenced that the crystal structures are mainly governed by dispersive energy. In fact, strong pairwise molecular dispersive interactions are responsible for the columnar arrangement observed in these complexes. A Hirshfeld surface analysis employing three-dimensional molecular surface contours and two-dimensional fingerprint plots indicated that the structures are stabilized by H...H, C...H, H...O, H...N and H...Rh intermolecular interactions.

The C—Br...Br dihalogen bond present in 1 has been characterized by means of topological studies of the electron density. Both the quantum theory of atoms in molecules and the electron localization function approaches have been applied to several theoretically calculated wavefunctions as well as to an X-ray constrained wavefunction. In addition, a number of theoretical techniques, such as the source function, the reduced density gradient method and the interacting quantum atoms approach, among others, have been used to analyse the dihalogen bond as well as several intramolecular interactions of the type C—H...Br—C which have also been detected in 1. The results show clearly that while bonding in the latter interactions are dominated by electrostatic components, the former has a high degree of covalency.

    Description: Anion...π interactions are newly recognized weak supramolecular forces which are relevant to many types of electron-deficient aromatic substrates. Being less competitive with respect to conventional hydrogen bonding, anion...π interactions are only rarely considered as a crystal-structure-defining factor. Their significance dramatically increases for polyoxometalate (POM) species, which offer extended oxide surfaces for maintaining dense aromatic/inorganic stacks. The structures of tetrakis(caffeinium) μ12-silicato-tetracosa-μ2-oxido-dodecaoxidododecatungsten trihydrate, (C8H11N4O2)4[SiW12O40]·3H2O, (1), and tris(theobrominium) μ12-phosphato-tetracosa-μ2-oxido-dodecaoxidododecatungsten ethanol sesquisolvate, (C7H9N4O2)3[PW12O40]·1.5C2H5OH, (2), support the utility of anion...π interactions as a special kind of supramolecular synthon controlling the structures of ionic lattices. Both caffeinium [(HCaf)+ in (1)] and theobrominium cations [(HTbr)+ in (2)] reveal double stacking patterns at both axial sides of the aromatic frameworks, leading to the generation of anion...π...anion bridges. The latter provide the rare face-to-face linkage of the anions. In (1), every square face of the metal–oxide cuboctahedra accepts the interaction and the above bridges yield flat square nets, i.e. {(HCaf+)2[SiW12O40]4−} n . Two additional cations afford single stacks only and they terminate the connectivity. Salt (2) retains a two-dimensional (2D) motif of square nets, with anion...π...anion bridges involving two of the three (HTbr)+ cations. The remaining cations complete a fivefold anion...π environment of [PW12O40]3−, acting as terminal groups. This single anion...π interaction is influenced by the specific pairing of (HTbr)+ cations by double amide-to-amide hydrogen bonding. Nevertheless, invariable 2D patterns in (1) and (2) suggest the dominant role of anion...π interactions as the structure-governing factor, which is applicable to the construction of noncovalent linkages involving Keggin-type oxometalates.

    Description: The generating sets of { b Z}^4 have been enumerated which consist of integral four-dimensional vectors with components −1, 0, 1 and allow Cayley graphs without edge intersections in a straight-edge embedding in a four-dimensional Euclidean space. Owing to computational restrictions the valency of enumerated graphs has been fixed to 10. Up to isomorphism 58 graphs have been found and characterized by coordination sequences, shortest cycles and automorphism groups. To compute automorphism groups, a novel strategy is introduced that is based on determining vertex stabilizers from the automorphism group of a sufficiently large finite ball cut out from an infinite graph. Six exceptional, rather `dense' graphs have been identified which are locally isomorphic to a five-dimensional cubic lattice within a ball of radius 10. They could be built by either interconnecting interpenetrated three- or four-dimensional cubic lattices and therefore necessarily contain Hopf links between quadrangular cycles. As a consequence, a local combinatorial isomorphism does not extend to a local isotopy.

    Description: Threefold twinning in 1-{(R)-1-[(3-oxo-2-isoindolinoyl)methyl]-2-propenyl}-5-methyl-2,3-indolinedione, C21H16N2O4, has been reported recently [Trost et al. (2020). Org. Lett. 22, 2584–2589] but the twin characterization was not published. This twinning presents several interesting features. The crystal structure is monoclinic, but its lattice is metrically strongly pseudo-orthorhombic and underpins a strongly pseudo-hexagonal sublattice. Several possible twin laws are compatible with these metric specializations, among which the one found experimentally corresponds to a trichromatic point group. Twinning is by reticular pseudo-merohedry with twin index 2 and zero obliquity but a non-zero twin misfit. The twin lattice coincides with the pseudo-hexagonal sublattice of the individual domain, which justifies the adoption of the unconventional setting B21 of the space group.

    Description: This work presents the results of research on a Co49Ni21Ga30 magnetic shape memory single crystal. Based on a literature review, it was identified that analyses of phase transformations have been limited to specific heating and cooling rates, which could lead to an incomplete description of the resulting phenomena. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) performed with different heating/cooling rates enabled the precise determination of enthalpy values, which deviate from literature values. Weak and previously unnoticed thermal phenomena at temperatures below 190 K were also observed. Their presence was confirmed by low-temperature in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Through DSC measurements and TEM observations, a model of the discovered phenomenon was proposed, which may have an impact on a better understanding of the physics of magnetic shape memory materials.

    Description: The experimental charge-density distribution in [Gd(H2O)9](CF3SO3)3 has been analysed and compared with the theoretical density functional theory calculations. Although the Gd—OH2 bonds are mainly ionic, a covalent contribution is detectable when inspecting both the topological parameters of these bonds and the natural bond orbital results. This contribution originates from small electron transfer from the lone pairs of oxygen atoms to empty 5d and 6s spin orbitals of Gd3+.

    Description: MgCO3·MgCl2·7H2O is the only known neutral magnesium carbonate containing chloride ions at ambient conditions. According to the literature, only small and twinned crystals of this double salt could be synthesised in a concentrated solution of MgCl2. For the crystal structure solution, single-crystal diffraction was carried out at a synchrotron radiation source. The monoclinic crystal structure (space group Cc) exhibits double chains of MgO octahedra linked by corners, connected by carbonate units and water molecules. The chloride ions are positioned between these double chains parallel to the (100) plane. Dry MgCO3·MgCl2·7H2O decomposes in the air to chlorartinite, Mg2(OH)Cl(CO3)·nH2O (n = 2 or 3). This work includes an extensive characterization of the title compound by powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, SEM and vibrational spectroscopy.

    Description: Here, the first accurate study is presented of the room-temperature and 100 K structures of one of the first organic spin liquids, κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Ag2(CN)3. It is shown that the monoclinic structure determined previously is only the average one. It is shown that the exact structure presents triclinic symmetry with two non-equivalent dimers in the unit cell. But surprisingly this does not lead to a sizeable charge disproportionation between dimers. The difference from the analogue compound κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu2(CN)3 which also presents a spin liquid phase is discussed in detail. The data provided here show the importance of the anionic layer and in particular the transition metal position in the process of symmetry breaking. The possible impact of the symmetry breaking, albeit weak, on the spin-liquid mechanism and the influence of various disorders on the physical properties of this system is also discussed.

    Description: The investigation of elemental composition, crystal structure and thermal behavior of vonsenite and hulsite from the Titovskoe boron deposit in Russia is reported. The structures of the borates are described in terms of cation-centered and oxocentred polyhedra. There are different sequences of double chains and layers consisting of oxocentred [OM 4] n + tetrahedra and [OM 5] n + tetragonal pyramids forming a framework. Elemental composition was determined by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Oxidation states and coordination sites of iron and tin in the oxoborates are determined using Mössbauer spectroscopy and compared with EDX and X-ray diffraction data (XRD). According to results obtained from high-temperature Mössbauer spectroscopy, the Fe2+ to Fe3+ oxidation in vonsenite and hulsite occurs at approximately 500 and 600 K, respectively. According to the high-temperature XRD data, this process is accompanied by an assumed deformation of crystal structures and subsequent solid-phase decomposition to hematite and warwickite. It is seen as a monotonic decrease of volume thermal expansion coefficients with an increase in temperature. A partial magnetic ordering in hulsite is observed for the first time with T c ≃ 383 K. Near this temperature, an unusual change of thermal expansion coefficients is revealed. Vonsenite starts to melt at 1571 K and hulsite melts at 1504 K. Eigenvalues of thermal expansion tensor are calculated for the oxoborates as well as anisotropy of the expansion is described in comparison with their crystal structures.

    Description: The crystal structure of new Mg9Ni6Ga14 and Mg3Ni2Ga compounds were investigated by single-crystal diffraction. Both structures can be described as three-core-shell cluster compounds. In the Mg6Ni9Ga14 structure, the [Ni6Ga6] icosahedron is encapsulated within the [Mg20] dodecahedron, which is again encapsulated within a [Ni18Ga42] fullerene-like truncated icosahedron, thus the three core–shell cluster [Ni6Ga6@Mg20@Ni18Ga42] results. In the Mg3Ni2Ga structure, the [Mg6] octahedron is encapsulated within the [Ni12Ga6] flattened icosahedron in vertices of which there are 12 nickel atoms, and six lateral edges are centered by gallium atoms, which in turn is encapsulated within a [Mg36] pseudo-rhombicuboctahedron with 12 additional atoms centering the lateral faces; thus for Mg3Ni2Ga the three-shell cluster is [Mg6@Ni12Ga6@Mg36].

    Description: Nylon 5T is one of the bio-based nylons, its raw material 1,5-pentanediamine is derived from biomass resources and produced by biological methods. 1,5-pentanediamine-terephthalate (PDA-TPA) is the monomeric salt for nylon 5T polymerization, and its own product quality has a significant impact on the performance of nylon 5T. PDA-TPA was prepared by anti-solvent crystallization in this study. It exists in two solid forms, a monohydrate [form (I)] and an anhydrous phase [form (II)]. The transition temperature of the two phases was around 65°C in the given ethanol–water binary (7:1) mixture. The characterization of monohydrate and anhydrate phases regarding structures and stabilities was carefully carried out using powder X-ray diffraction, single crystal X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, hot-stage microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The relationship between the molecular interactions of monohydrate and anhydrate phases under different packing architectures and their thermal behaviours was analysed and established. In addition, the relationships between the structures and thermal behaviours for the two solid forms were analysed and established. In addition, the effect of solvent on phase conversion, the relationships between the temperature and water activity, as well as the relative stability of monohydrate and anhydrate phases under different thermodynamic conditions, were investigated by solid–solid transformation and solvent-mediated transformation experiments. It was obvious that the transition temperature of monohydrate and anhydrate phases of PDA-TPA was significantly influenced by water activity, and the larger the value of water activity is, the higher is the transition temperature. These studies give insight into the transformation of nylon 5T monomer salt and contribute to the control of target crystal preparation.

    Description: [Ni{2-H2NC(=O)C5H4N}2(H2O)2][Ni{2,6-(O2C)2C5H3N}2]·4.67H2O, a new complex salt containing a bis(2,6-dicarboxypyridine)nickel(II) anion and a bis(2-amidopyridine)diaquanickel(II) cation, was synthesized and characterized. The crystal is stabilized by an extensive network of hydrogen bonds. Alternate layers of anions and cations/water molecules parallel to (010) can be distinguished. Computational studies of the network packing of the title compound by high-level DFT-D/B3LYP calculations indicate stabilization of the networks with conventional and non-conventional intermolecular O—H...O, N—H...O and C—H...O hydrogen bonds along with π-stacking contacts. Due to the presence of water molecules and the importance of forming hydrogen bonds with the involvement of water clusters to the stability of the crystal packing, the importance and role of these water clusters, and the quantitative stability resulting from the formation of hydrogen bonds and possibly other noncovalent bonds such as π-stacking are examined. The binding energies obtained by DFT-D calculations for these contacts indicate that hydrogen bonds, especially O—H...O and N—H...O, control the construction of the crystalline packing. Additionally, the results of Bader's theory of AIM for these interactions agree reasonably well with the calculated energies.

    Description: Tilings based on the cut-and-project method are key model systems for the description of aperiodic solids. Typically, quantities of interest in crystallography involve averaging over large patches, and are well defined only in the infinite-volume limit. In particular, this is the case for autocorrelation and diffraction measures. For cut-and-project systems, the averaging can conveniently be transferred to internal space, which means dealing with the corresponding windows. In this topical review, this is illustrated by the example of averaged shelling numbers for the Fibonacci tiling, and the standard approach to the diffraction for this example is recapitulated. Further, recent developments are discussed for cut-and-project structures with an inflation symmetry, which are based on an internal counterpart of the renormalization cocycle. Finally, a brief review is given of the notion of hyperuniformity, which has recently gained popularity, and its application to aperiodic structures.

    Description: The famous Euler's rule for three-dimensional polyhedra, F − E + V = 2 (F, E and V are the numbers of faces, edges and vertices, respectively), when extended to many tested cases of space-filling polyhedra such as the asymmetric unit (ASU), takes the form Fn − En + Vn = 1, where Fn, En and Vn enumerate the corresponding elements, normalized by their multiplicity, i.e. by the number of times they are repeated by the space-group symmetry. This modified formula holds for the ASUs of all 230 space groups and 17 two-dimensional planar groups as specified in the International Tables for Crystallography, and for a number of tested Dirichlet domains, suggesting that it may have a general character. The modification of the formula stems from the fact that in a symmetrical space-filling arrangement the polyhedra (such as the ASU) have incomplete bounding elements (faces, edges, vertices), since they are shared (in various degrees) with the space-filling neighbors.

    Description: The structure of calcium europium orthoborate, Ca3Eu2(BO3)4, was determined using high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction data collected at the ID22 beamline (ESRF) under ambient conditions, as well as at high temperature. Rietveld refinement allowed determination of the lattice constants and structural details, including the Ca/Eu ratios at the three cationic sites and their evolution with temperature. Clear thermal expansion anisotropy was found, and slope changes of lattice-constant dependencies on temperature were observed at 923 K. Above this temperature the changes in occupation of the Ca/Eu sites occur, exhibiting a tendency towards a more uniform Eu distribution over the three Ca/Eu sites. Possible structural origins of the observed thermal expansion anisotropy are discussed.

    Description: The inner-crystal quantum electronic pressure was estimated for unstrained C6Cl6, C6Br6, and C6I6 crystals and for those under external compression simulated from 1 to 20 GPa. The changes in its distribution were analyzed for the main structural elements in considered crystals: for triangles of the typical halogen bonds assembled in Hal3-synthons, where Hal = Cl, Br, I; for Hal...Hal stacking interactions, as well as for covalent bonds. Under simulated external compression, the quantum electronic pressure in the intermolecular space reduces as the electron density increases, indicating spatial areas of relatively less crystal resistance to external compression. The most compliant C6Cl6 crystal shows the largest changes of quantum electronic pressure in the centre of Cl3-synthon while the deformation of rigid I3-synthon under external compression depends only on the features of I...I halogen bonds.

In the crystal, two sets of C—H...π(ring) interactions form stacks of molecules extending parallel to the a-axis direction. Hirshfeld surface analysis indicates that the most important contributions to the crystal packing are from H...H (42.2%), H...C/C...H (23.1%) and H...Br/Br...H (22.3%) interactions. The optimized structure calculated using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/ 6–311 G(d,p) level is compared with the experimentally determined structure in the solid state. The cyclohexyl ring adopts a chair conformation with the exocyclic C—N bond in an equatorial orientation. One of the phenol OH groups forms an intramolecular O—H...N hydrogen bond, generating an S(6) ring, and a short intramolecular C—H...O contact is also present. In the crystal, O—H...O hydrogen bonds link the molecules into C(10) chains propagating along the [100] direction. The Hirshfeld surface analysis of the title compound confirms the presence of these intra- and intermolecular interactions. The corresponding fingerprint plots indicate that the most significant contacts in the crystal packing are H...H (76.4%), H...C/C...H (16.3%), and H...O/O...H (7.2%).

The conformation about the imine bond [1.282 (2) Å] is E and there is limited delocalization of π-electron density over the CN2C residue as there is a twist about the N—N bond [C—N—N—C torsion angle = −166.57 (15)°]. An intramolecular hydroxyl-O—H...N(imine) hydrogen bond closes an S(6) loop. In the crystal, methylene-C—H...π(tolyl) contacts assemble molecules into a supramolecular layer propagating in the ab plane: the layers stack without directional interactions between them. The analysis of the calculated Hirshfeld surfaces confirm the importance of H...H contacts, which contribute 46.7% of all contacts followed by H...C/C...H contacts [25.5%] reflecting, in part, the C—H...π(tolyl) contacts. The calculation of the interaction energies confirm the importance of the dispersion term and the influence of the stabilizing H...H contacts in the inter-layer region.

    Description: The title morpholinochlorin, C46H16F20N4O3, was crystallized from hexane/methylene chloride as its 0.44 methylene chloride solvate, C46H16F20N4O3·0.44CH2Cl2. The morpholinochlorin was synthesized by stepwise oxygen insertion into a porphyrin using a `breaking and mending strategy': NaIO4-induced diol cleavage of the corresponding 2,3-dihydroxychlorin with in situ methanol-induced, acid-catalyzed intramolecular ring closure of the intermediate secochlorins bisaldehyde. Formally, one of the pyrrolic building blocks was thus replaced by a 2,3-dimethoxymorpholine moiety. Like other morpholinochlorins, the macrocycle of the title compound adopts a ruffled conformation, and the modulation of the porphyrinic π-system chromophore induces a red-shift of its optical spectrum compared to its corresponding chlorin analog. Packing in the crystal is governed by interactions involving the fluorine atoms of the pentafluorophenyl substituents, dominated by C—H...F interactions, and augmented by short fluorine...fluorine contacts, C—F...π interactions, and one severely slipped π-stacking interaction between two pentafluorophenyl rings. The solvate methylene chloride molecule is disordered over two independent positions around an inversion center with occupancies of two × 0.241 (5) and two × 0.199 (4), for a total site occupancy of 88%.

    Description: The title compound, C15H15NO, is an enantiopure small molecule, which has been synthesized many times, although its crystal structure was never determined. By recrystallization from a variety of solvent mixtures (pure acetonitrile, ethanol–water, toluene–ethanol, THF–methanol), we obtained three unsolvated polymorphs, in space groups P21 and P212121. Form I is obtained from acetonitrile, without admixture of other forms, whereas forms II and III are obtained simultaneously by concomitant crystallizations from alcohol-based solvent mixtures. All forms share the same supramolecular structure, based on infinite C 1 1(4) chain motifs formed by N—H...O intermolecular hydrogen bonds, as usual for non-sterically hindered amides. However, a conformational modification of the molecular structure, related to the rotation of the phenyl rings, alters the packing of the chains in the crystal structures. The orientation of the chain axis is perpendicular and parallel to the crystallographic twofold screw axis of space group P21 in forms I and II, respectively. As for form III, the asymmetric unit contains two independent molecules forming parallel chains in space group P212121, and the crystal structure combines features of monoclinic forms I and II.

The MnIII ions are six-coordinate with an elongated tetragonally distorted octahedral geometry. Both the DyIII and Na+ ions are eight-coordinate. The DyIII ions possess a square-antiprismatic geometry, while the Na+ ions have a distorted biaugmented trigonal–prismatic geometry. Four 3-hydroxybenzoate or 4-hydroxybenzoate ligands bridge each MnIII ion to the central DyIII ion. For 1, whole-molecule disorder is observed for the main molecule, excluding only the DyIII and Na+ ions, and the occupancy ratio refined to 0.8018 (14):0.1982 (14). Three DMA molecules were refined as disordered with two in general positions by an approximate 180° rotation and the third disordered twice by general disorder as well as by an exact 180° rotation about a twofold axis that bisects it. The occupancy ratios refined to 0.496 (8):0.504 (8), 0.608 (9):0.392 (9), and 2×0.275 (7):2×0.225 (7), respectively. For 2, segments of the metallacrown are disordered including the DyIII ion, one of the Mn ions, two of the Mn-bound 4-hydroxybenzoate ligands, the Mn-bridging salicylhydroximate ligand, and portions of the remaining three shi3− ligands. The occupancy ratio for the metallacrown disorder refined to 0.849 (9):0.151 (9). Two DMF solvent molecules are also disordered, each over two orientations. The disorder ratios refined to 0.64 (3):0.36 (3) and to 0.51 (2):0.49 (2), respectively. For 2, the crystal under investigation was refined as a non-merohedric twin by a 90° rotation around the real a axis [twin ratio 0.9182 (8):0.0818 (8)].

    Description: The title compounds, 2-(ferrocenylcarbonyl)benzoic acid, [Fe(C5H5)(C13H9O3)], 1, and 3-ferrocenylphthalide [systematic name: 3-ferrocenyl-2-benzofuran-1(3H)-one], [Fe(C5H5)(C13H9O2)], 2, have been synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure of compound 1 was solved recently at room temperature [Qin, Y. (2019). CSD Communication (CCDC deposition number 1912662). CCDC, Cambridge, England]. Here we report a redetermination of its crystal structure at 90 K with improved precision by a factor of about three. The molecular structures of both compounds exhibit a typical sandwich structure. In the crystal packing of compound 1, each molecule engages in intermolecular hydrogen bonding, forming a centrosymmetric dimer with graph-set notation R 2 2 (8) and an O...O distance of 2.6073 (15) Å. There are weak C—H...O and C—H...π interactions in the crystal packing of compound 2. The phthalide moiety in 2 is oriented roughly perpendicular to the ferrocene backbone, with a dihedral angle of 77.4 (2)°.

    Description: The structures of two hydroxy-thiophenone derivatives related to the antibiotic thiolactomycin are presented. These are the racemic 3-hydroxy-2,4-dimethyl-2H-thiophen-5-one, C6H8O2S, and 3-hydroxy-4-methyl-2H-thiophen-5-one, C5H6O2S. The main structural feature of both compounds is C(6) hydrogen-bonded chains formed between the OH and C=O groups. In achiral C5H6O2S, these chains propagate only by translation, corresponding to x + 1, y, z + 1. However, in contrast, for racemic C6H8O2S the hydrogen-bonded chains propagate through a −x + {3over 2}, y + {1over 2}, z operation, giving chains lying parallel to the crystallographic b-axis direction that are composed of alternate R and S enantiomers. The crystals of 3-hydroxy-4-methyl-2H-thiophen-5-one were found to be twinned by a 180° rotation about the reciprocal 001 direction. In the final refinement the twin ratio refined to 0.568 (2):0.432 (2).

    Description: The crystal structures of a new polymorph of dipotassium hydrogen citrate, 2K+·HC6H5O7 2−, and potassium rubidium hydrogen citrate, K+·Rb+·HC6H5O7 2−, have been solved and refined using laboratory powder X-ray diffraction and optimized using density functional techniques. In the new polymorph of the dipotassium salt, KO7 and KO8 coordination polyhedra share corners and edges to form a three-dimensional framework with channels parallel to the a axis and [111]. The hydrophobic methylene groups face each other in the channels. The un-ionized carboxylic acid group forms a strong charge-assisted hydrogen bond to the central ionized carboxylate group. The hydroxy group forms an intermolecular hydrogen bond to a different central carboxylate group. In the potassium rubidium salt, the K+ and Rb+ cations are disordered over two sites, in approximately 0.72:0.28 and 0.28:0.72 ratios. KO8 and RbO9 coordination polyhedra share corners and edges to form a three-dimensional framework with channels parallel to the a axis. The un-ionized carboxylic acid group forms a strong charge-assisted hydrogen bond to an ionized carboxylate group. The hydroxy group forms an intermolecular hydrogen bond to the central carboxylate group. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the ordered cation structures suggest that interchange of K+ and Rb+ at the two cation sites changes the energy insignificantly.

    Description: A mathematical description of crystal structure is proposed consisting of two parts: the underlying translational periodicity and the distinct atomic positions up to the symmetry operations in the unit cell, consistent with the International Tables for Crystallography. By the Cauchy–Born hypothesis, such a description can be integrated with the theory of continuum mechanics to calculate a derived crystal structure produced by solid–solid phase transformation. In addition, the expressions for the orientation relationship between the parent lattice and the derived lattice are generalized. The derived structure rationalizes the lattice parameters and the general equivalent atomic positions that assist the indexing process of X-ray diffraction analysis for low-symmetry martensitic materials undergoing phase transformation. The analysis is demonstrated in a CuAlMn shape memory alloy. From its austenite phase (L21 face-centered cubic structure), it is identified that the derived martensitic structure has orthorhombic symmetry Pmmn with the derived lattice parameters a d = 4.36491, b d = 5.40865 and c d = 4.2402 Å, by which the complicated X-ray Laue diffraction pattern can be well indexed, and the orientation relationship can be verified.

    Description: An extension is proposed of the Shannon entropy-based structural complexity measure introduced by Krivovichev, taking into account the geometric coordinational degrees of freedom a crystal structure has. This allows a discrimination to be made between crystal structures which share the same number of atoms in their reduced cells, yet differ in the number of their free parameters with respect to their fractional atomic coordinates. The strong additivity property of the Shannon entropy is used to shed light on the complexity measure of Krivovichev and how it gains complexity contributions due to single Wyckoff positions. Using the same property allows for combining the proposed coordinational complexity measure with Krivovichev's combinatorial one to give a unique quantitative descriptor of a crystal structure's configurational complexity. An additional contribution of chemical degrees of freedom is discussed, yielding an even more refined scheme of complexity measures which can be obtained from a crystal structure's description: the six C's of complexity.

    Description: Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are a well characterized family of metalloenzymes that are highly efficient in facilitating the interconversion between carbon dioxide and bicarbonate. Recently, CA activity has been associated with the LCIB (limiting CO2-inducible protein B) protein family, which has been an interesting target in aquatic photosynthetic microorganisms. To gain further insight into the catalytic mechanism of this new group of CAs, the X-ray structure of a highly active LCIB homolog (PtLCIB3) from the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum was determined. The CA activities of PtLCIB3, its paralog PtLCIB4 and a variety of their mutants were also measured. It was discovered that PtLCIB3 has a classic β-CA fold and its overall structure is highly similar to that of its homolog PtLCIB4. Subtle structural alterations between PtLCIB3 and PtLCIB4 indicate that an alternative proton-shuttle cavity could perhaps be one reason for their remarkable difference in CA activity. A potential alternative proton-shuttle route in the LCIB protein family is suggested based on these results.

    Description: GLIC is a bacterial homologue of the pentameric ligand-gated ion channels (pLGICs) that mediate the fast chemical neurotransmission of nerve signalling in eukaryotes. Because the activation and allosteric modulation features are conserved among prokaryotic and eukaryotic pLGICs, GLIC is commonly used as a model to study the allosteric transition and structural pharmacology of pLGICs. It has previously been shown that GLIC is inhibited by some carboxylic acid derivatives. Here, experimental evidence for carboxylate binding to GLIC is provided by solving its X-ray structures with a series of monocarboxylate and dicarboxylate derivatives, and two carboxylate-binding sites are described: (i) the `intersubunit' site that partially overlaps the canonical pLGIC orthosteric site and (ii) the `intrasubunit' vestibular site, which is only occupied by a subset of the described derivatives. While the intersubunit site is widely conserved in all pLGICs, the intrasubunit site is only conserved in cationic eukaryotic pLGICs. This study sheds light on the importance of these two extracellular modulation sites as potential drug targets in pLGICs.

    Description: Flavin-dependent halogenases regioselectively introduce halide substituents into electron-rich substrates under mild reaction conditions. For the enzyme Xcc4156 from Xanthomonas campestris, the structure of a complex with the cofactor flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and a bromide ion would be of particular interest as this enzyme exclusively brominates model substrates in vitro. Apo Xcc4156 crystals diffracted to 1.6 Å resolution. The structure revealed an open substrate-binding site lacking the loop regions that close off the active site and contribute to substrate binding in tryptophan halogenases. Therefore, Xcc4156 might accept larger substrates, possibly even peptides. Soaking of apo Xcc4156 crystals with FAD led to crumbling of the intergrown crystals. Around half of the crystals soaked with FAD did not diffract, while in the others there was no electron density for FAD. The FAD-binding loop, which changes its conformation between the apo and the FAD-bound form in related enzymes, is involved in a crystal contact in the apo Xcc4156 crystals. The conformational change that is predicted to occur upon FAD binding would disrupt this crystal contact, providing a likely explanation for the destruction of the apo crystals in the presence of FAD. Soaking with only bromide did not result in bromide bound to the catalytic halide-binding site. Simultaneous soaking with FAD and bromide damaged the crystals more severely than soaking with only FAD. Together, these latter two observations suggest that FAD and bromide bind to Xcc4156 with positive cooperativity. Thus, apo Xcc4156 crystals provide functional insight into FAD and bromide binding, even though neither the cofactor nor the halide is visible in the structure.

Both compounds possess a protonated tryptammonium cation, and a hydrofumarate anion in the asymmetric unit. The ethyl group of the EPT cation is modeled as a two-component disorder with 50% occupancy for each component. In the extended structure, N—H...O and O—H...O hydrogen bonds generate infinite two-dimensional networks parallel to the (001) plane for both compounds.

The configuration about the C=N bond is E, stabilized by a strong intramolecular O—H...N hydrogen bond that forms an S(6) ring motif. In the crystal, C—H...O and C—H...N interactions lead to the formation of sheets perpendicular to the a axis. C—H...π interactions, forming polymeric chains along the a-axis direction, connect these sheets into a three-dimensional network. A Hirshfeld surface analysis indicates that the most important contributions for the packing arrangement are from H...H and C...H/H...C interactions. The density functional theory (DFT) optimized structure at the B3LYP/6–311 G(d,p) level is compared with the experimentally determined molecular structure and the HOMO–LUMO energy gap is given.

    Description: The compound La24Ru11 (tetracosalanthanum undecaruthenium) crystallizes in a Ce24Co11-type structure. The non-centrosymmetric crystal structure (space group P63 mc) contains RuLa6 trigonal prisms, La6 octahedra and LaRu4 tetrahedra and is closely related to that of Ce23Ni7Mg4. This communication highlights the crystal-chemical similarities and points out the differences between the two structures. All of the tested crystals were inversion twins.
