Alle waren einphasig und zeigten L 21-Struktur. Magnetische Messungen wurden sowohl im ferromagnetischen als auch im paramagnetischen Bereich durchgeführt. Sie ergaben für Mn, das einzige Atom das in dieser Art vonHeusler-Legierungen ein Moment zeigt, den üblichen Wert von ca. 4 µB und ein ihm entsprechendes μeff im paramagnetischen Bereich. Ein flaches Minimum derCurietemperatur kann mit Hilfe von di-dl-Wechselwirkung erklärt werden.
    Notes: Abstract QuarternaryHeusler alloys of composition (Ni1−x Cu x )2MnSn were prepared withx=0–1. They were all single phased with L21 structure. Alloys were investigated by magnetic measurements. For Mn, the only atom carrying a moment in this kind ofHeusler alloys, the usual value (∼4 µB) was found and a corresponding μeff in the paramagnetic region. A shallow minimum of theCurie temperatures can be explained on the basis of di-dl interaction.

    Notes: Abstract From our interpretation of the Bouguer gravity and aeromagnetic anomalies in south-east Scotland, we conclude that a massive granite batholith underlies the greater part of the eastern Southern Uplands. The granite model which we computed earlier from gravity anomalies in the Tweeddale area fits the observed magnetic anomalies closely, if a normal magnetization of 0.095 A m−1 is assigned, similar to values found for exposed local granites. Further gravity modelling shows that, apart from the Tweeddale boss, the granite shallows to less than 1 km near Lammer Law in East Lothian and extends north of the Lammermuir Fault. A model for the East Lothian volcanics was computed from their aeromagnetic anomalies, then their gravitational effect was combined with that estimated for the Devonian and Carboniferous sediments and the result stripped off the observed gravity field. The residual gravity anomalies were used to generate a two-dimensional model for the granite north of the Lammermuir Fault. The expected tectonic consequences of a massive granite batholith in the eastern Southern Uplands are compared with the known development of faults and sedimentary basins around its margins.

    Notes: Abstract Conditions which induce a transmembrane electrical potential, positive with respect to the inside of membrane vesicles, result in a substantial (4–12-fold) stimulation of the activity of membrane-associated β-glucan synthetases in a membrane preparation derived from the developing cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) fiber. Induction of electrical potentials which are negative with respect to the inside of the membrane vesicle results in little or no stimulation of β-glucan synthesis. Those products whose synthesis is stimulated are mainly β-1,3-glucan, but there is also a considerable increase in β-1,4-glucan. No α-1,4-glucan (starch) was detected in the reaction products. A transmembrane pH gradient was found to have no effect on β-glucan synthesis. The results indicate that a transmembrane electrical potential can influence, either directly or indirectly, the activity of membrane-associated polysaccharide synthetases.

    Notes: Abstract Several compounds were tested for their ability to inhibit the in-vivo synthesis of cellulose and other cell-wall polysaccharides in fibers of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) developing on in-vitro cultured ovules. Inhibitory effects were measured by the ability of the compounds to inhibit the incorporation of radioactivity from [U-14C]glucose into these cell-wall polymers. Of the compounds surveyed, 2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile (DCB) was the most effective and specific one for its effects on cellulose synthesis when compared to its effect on the synthesis of other cell-wall components. At 10 μM DCB caused 80% inhibition of cellulose synthesis, and the effect was reversed upon removal of the DCB, with recovery to 90% of the control rate. Two analogs of DCB, 2-chloro-6-fluorobenzonitrile and 2,6-dichlorobenzene carbothiamide, were as specific and nearly as effective as DCB with respect to their effects on cellulose synthesis. Coumarin, generally regarded as an inhibitor of cellulose synthesis in other plant systems, was effective in cotton fibers in millimolar concentrations and, like DCB, was relatively specific with regard to its effect on cellulose synthesis. DCB and coumarin inhibited the synthesis of both primary and secondary wall cellulose. Bacitracin, an inhibitor of the cycling of phosphorylated polyprenols involved in cell-wall synthesis in bacteria, and ethylenediaminetetracetic acid (EDTA) and ethyleneglycol-bis-(β-amino-ethylether)-N,N′-tetracetic acid (EGTA), chelators of civalent cations, were also effective, although only at relatively high concentrations, in inhibiting incorporation of radioactivity into cellulose.

    Notes: Abstract The positions of double bonds in olefins can be readily determined by a sodium borohydride reduction of their methoxymercuration products followed by mass spectrometry. Fragmentation of the methoxy derivative in the mass spectrometer results in cleavage on either side of the methoxy group to give intense fragment ions which are characteristic of each isomer. This simple and convenient microanalytical technique was applied to several synthetic standards and insect derived olefins, including the alkenes from the cuticular lipids of the honeybeeApis mellifera L.

    Notes: Summary The gas chromatographic selectivity of K+, Zn2+, Ag+, Ni2+, and Cd2+ forms of a cation exchange packing have been determined for a set of 44 C2 to C8 alkenes. The retention characteristics of each ion are broken down into electronic (charge-transfer) and steric effects associated with the alkene sub-populations of each carbon number. Almost every pair of alkenes tested can be separated on at least one of these packings. Retention is much stronger on the ion exchangers than on metal-ion containing packings in gas-liquid chromatography, even with shorter columns and higher temperatures.
