[Washington, D.C.] : AGU, American Geophysical Union
    Call number: 8/M 14.0116
Description / Table of Contents: A comprehensive and methodologically rigorous analysis of earthquake occurrence. Models based on the theory of the stochastic multidimensional point processes are employed to approximate the earthquake occurrence pattern and evaluate its parameters. The Author shows that most of these parameters have universal values. These results help explain the classical earthquake distributions: Omori's law and the Gutenberg-Richter relation. The Author derives a new negative-binomial distribution for earthquake numbers, instead of the Poisson distribution, and then determines a fractal correlation dimension for spatial distributions of earthquake hypocenters. The book also investigates the disorientation of earthquake focal mechanisms and shows that it follows the rotational Cauchy distribution. These statistical and mathematical advances make it possible to produce quantitative forecasts of earthquake occurrence. In these forecasts earthquake rate in time, space, and focal mechanism orientation is evaluated.

Description / Table of Contents: In addition to senior scientists, who have summarised their main results in the five volumes of the Future Megacities Book Series, ambitious young researchers have also contributed substantially to the German research programme on sustainable development of future megacities. The authors included in this volume were awarded the research programme's Young Researcher's Award in 2013, and a small but exemplary selection of their scientific work is presented here. Main topics are mobility with transit-oriented development and public transport in China, water demand and supply issues in the arid cities of Lima and Urumqi, governance questions in South Africa and India in the wide framework of energy, and improvement of urban planning procedures in Ho Chi Minh City.

Description / Table of Contents: Was uns wirklich bedroht und wie wir richtig damit umgehen.

Description / Table of Contents: Flooding caused by a rise in global mean sea Ievel has the potential to affect the lives of more than 1 billion people in coastal areas worldwide. There have been significant changes in sea Ievel over the past 2 million years, both at the local and global scales, and a compIete understanding of natural cycles of change as well as anthropogenic effects is imperative for future global development. This book reviews the history of research into these sea-level changes and summanses the methods and analytical approaches used to interpret evidence for sea-level changes. lt provides an overview of the changing climates of the Ouaternary, examines the processes responsible for global variability of sea-level records, and presents detailed reviews of sea-level changes for the Pleistocene and Holocene. The book concludes by discussing current trends in sea Ievel and likely future sea level changes. This is an important and authoritative summary of evidence for sea-level changes in our most recent geological period, and provides a key resource for academic researchers, and graduate and advanced undergraduate students, working in tectonics, stratigraphy, geomorphology and physical geography, environmental science and other aspects of Quaternary studies.

Description / Table of Contents: The focus of this R&D project is the development of a new integrated workflow using state of the art optimization techniques combined with the adjoint method for history matching. The integration concept is aimed at developing a robust workflow supporting decision processes for evaluating alternative production scenarios of oil and gas fields. For this purpose, SenEx, which is an advanced sensitivity computation tool capable of modifying rock properties on grid-block level, has been linked to the existing optimization framework MEPO. The Hotlink thus developed has been tested, reviewed and enhanced. Within the framework of this re-search project, the developed workflows have been applied to a spectrum of history match-ing problems with varying complexities. In general, multiple geological realizations were used to capture existing uncertainty in an extended optimization workflow, including history matching and production optimization. Us-ing this method, history match is typically achieved with significantly less number of iterations compared to existing methods. The workflow applied is useful for evaluating alternative re-development scenarios, quantifying uncertainties and generating realistic history matched models. Benchmarking work performed provided better insights into benefits and limitations of the adjoint method.

Description / Table of Contents: This book gives a coherent development of the current understanding of the fluid dynamics of the middle latitude atmosphere. lt is primarily aimed at post-graduate and advanced undergraduate level students and does not assume any previous knowledge of fluid mechanics, meteorology or atmospheric science. The book will be an invaluable resource for any quantitative atmospheric scientist who wishes to increase their understanding of the subject. The importance of the rotation of the Earth and the stable stratification of its atmosphere, with their implications for the balance of larger-scale flows, is highlighted throughout. Clearly structured throughout, the first of three themes deals with the development of the basic equations for an atmosphere on a rotating, spherical planet and discusses scale analyses of these equations. The second theme explores the importance of rotation and introduces vorticity and potential vorticity, as well as turbulence. In the third theme, the concepts developed in the first two themes are used to give an understanding of balanced motion in real atmospheric phenomena. lt starts with quasi-geostrophic theory and moves on to linear and nonlinear theories for mid-latitude weather systems and their fronts. The potential vorticity perspective on weather systems is highlighted with a discussion of the Rossby wave propagation and potential vorticity mixing covered in the final chapter.

Description / Table of Contents: This revised and updated edition focuses on constrained ordination (RDA, CCA), variation partitioning and the use of permutation tests of statistical hypotheses about multivariate data. Both classification and modern regression methods (GLM, GAM, loess) are reviewes and species functional traits and spatial structures are analysed. Nine case studies of varying difficulty help to illustrate the suggestes analytical methods, using the latest version of Canoco 5. All studies utilise descriptive and manipulative approaches, and are supported by data sets and project files available from the book website: http://regent.prf.jcu.cz/maed2/. Written primarily for community ecologists needing to analyse data resulting from field observations and experiments, this book is a valuable resource for students and researchers dealing with both simple and complex ecological problems, such as the variation of biotic communities with environmental conditions or their response to experimental manipulation.

Description / Table of Contents: "It is increasingly clear that the world of climate politics is no longer confined to the activities of national governments and international negotiations. Critical to this transformation of the politics of climate change has been the emergence of new forms of transnational governance that cut across traditional state-based jurisdictions and operate across public and private divides. This book provides the first comprehensive, cutting-edge account of the world of transnational climate change governance. Co-authored by a team of the world's leading experts in the field and based on a survey of sixty case studies, the book traces the emergence, nature and consequences of this phenomenon, and assesses the implications for the field of global environmental politics. It will prove invaluable for researchers, graduate students and policy makers in climate change, political science, international relations, human geography, sociology and ecological economics"--

Description / Table of Contents: This unitary resource sets out the derivation of conservation, thermodynamic, and evolution equations used in modeling multiphase porous media systems. It includes detailed, multiscale applications and a forward-looking discussion of open research issues. Thermodynamically constrained averaging theory provides a consistent method for upscaling conservation and thermodynamic equations for application in the study of porous medium systems. The method provides dynamic equations for phases, interfaces, and common curves that are closely based on insights from the entropy inequality. All larger scale variables in the equations are explicitly defined in terms of their microscale precursors, facilitating the determination of important parameters and macroscale state equations based on microscale experimental and computational analysis. The method requires that all assumptions that lead to a particular equation form be explicitly indicated, a restriction which is useful in ascertaining the range of applicability of a model as well as potential sources of error and opportunities to improve the analysis.
