Description: Global change has triggered a number of environmental changes, such as alterations in climate, geo-resources soil and water, atmospheric chemistry, and land productivity. Many areas of the system Earth-Man are affected, thereby directly impacting the lives of present and future generations. Like many countries, Germany too is also faced with the threat of increased droughts and heat waves, soil degradation, winter storms, water shortages at one extreme and flood events at the other, as well as a decline in biodiversity. These changes can range across broad temporal and spatial scales and present strong regional differences. The TERENO observatory “Northeastern German Lowland” spans an area which is considered as one of the regions in Germany most severely affected by climate change. The impact of increased dry periods is already being felt ,drying out the regions’ numerous lakes and mires. The observatory covers the catchment area of the Uecker river, the Müritz National Park, the biosphere reserve Schorfheide-Chorin and the DEMMIN calibration and validation test site operated by the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam is coordinating work at the observatory and is cooperating closely with universities and other research organisations. Of particular significance is the emphasis being placed on geoarchives and landscape development. The aim is to acquire and combine high quality data on climate and landscape developments in the past and present to develop forecasts for the future.

Description: Two regions in West Antarctica have received increased attention over the last years due to their potential sensitivity to climate change: the Antarctic Peninsula, which currently experiences warming at rates greater than the global average (Vaughan, 2006), ongoing ice shelf disintegration and subsequent glacier acceleration (Scambos et al., 2004); and the Amundsen Sea Sector (AS), where ice velocities, ice discharge and glacial imbalances are extreme compared to the rest of the continent (Rignot et al., 2008). The satellite gravimetry mission GRACE reveals interannual variations in ice mass related to varying snowfall, which is strongly influenced by the global climate phenomenon El Nino (Sasgen et al., 2010).

Description: Der 4.

Description: Water is stored at very different places on Earth as vapor, liquid or in solid state. It is constantly exchanged between the storage compartments in atmosphere, ocean and on the continents. With time-variable gravity fields of the satellite mission GRACE, GFZ provides unique data sets for continental hydrology and climate research to describe water storage variations at large spatial scales. This allows to quantify the related water fluxes and to make a substantial contribution towards a better understanding of the global climate system and its water cycle including freshwater resources from regional to global scales. In addition, research at GFZ improves prognostic capabilities of hydrological models by integrating GRACE data and adds complementary small-scale data from ground-based gravimetry to study water storage dynamics. Decadal variations and long-term trends, either due to climate variability or anthropogenic impact, can only be adequately resolved, however, by extended gravity time series in the course of a GRACE Follow-On mission.

Description: The separation of Africa and South America about 130 million years ago was accompanied by huge volumes of magma derived from the mantle. Erosion has removed many of the surficial lavas but dolerite dyke swarms beneath them are preserved. These dykes are under study to determine the composition of magmas, the age of magmatism, and the direction of extensional stress in the crust. Here, we compare two dolerite dyke swarms from the southern African margin that are separated by about 2000 km. The northern area is the Etendeka Province of NW Namibia with the Henties Bay-Outjo dyke swarm (HOD). The southern area, at the tip of Africa, hosts the False Bay dyke swarm. The dolerites from these two areas differ in compositional diversity and magmatic temperatures, both being higher in the north. Three magma types are distinguished in the northern area and only one in the south. Temperatures calculated from olivine-melt equilibrium show a north-south decrease by about 150 °C. Converted to mantle potential temperature and compared with global averages, the data indicate “normal” upper mantle temperatures in southern region like in the mid-ocean ridge systems (1380 °C), and mantle temperatures in the northern area (1520 °C) similar to hotspot islands like Hawaii and Iceland. We conclude that breakup-related magmatism in the south was related to extension and passive decompression of an upper mantle with normal temperature and composition. The Tristan mantle plume greatly enhanced magma production in the Etendeka Province but was not the cause of continental breakup.

Description: Seismological and other geophysical observations from the surface show that the internal structure of our planet consists of concentric layers: the crust (on which we live), the mantle and a metallic core. However, even the deepest drill holes can access less than 1 percent of the Earth depth for chemical/physical measurements or sampling. A multidisciplinary approach combining geophysics, geochemistry, petrology and geodynamic modeling is required in order learn more about the deep Earth. Mineral physics provides data at high pressure measured in the laboratory. High pressure measurements performed at the GFZ in the framework of an international cooperation showed that the spin transition of divalent iron in ferropericlase (Mg,Fe)O has a major effect on the elastic properties at conditions existing in the lower mantle. This spin transition of (Mg,Fe)O is caused by a pressure induced spin pairing of the 3d electrons between 40 and 60 GPa. The measurements showed that the bulk modulus and the density of ferropericlase increase by several percent at this pressure regime. Moreover, the shear wave velocity anisotropy increases by about 60 % in the same pressure range. These results suggest that the anisotropy in lowermost mantle is caused by the texture of the ferropericlase rather than by perovskite that is about four times more abundant. Additional new experiments performed on a synthetic mantle rock at the synchrotron light source PETRA III (DESY, Hamburg) have the potential to reveal the development of texture in rocks subject to the extreme pressures and temperatures conditions present in the very deep mantle of the Earth.

Description: Our blue planet ows its habitability to a fascinating feedback mechanism that stabilises greenhouse gas concentrations and hence temperature at its surface at a level that has kept water in the liquid form throughout most of Earth’s history. Weathering of silicate rocks during the formation of soil consumes the CO2 that is continuously being emitted through volcanic degassing and deposits it as carbonate sediments on the seafloor. Through weathering feedbacks, this “geologic CO2 cycle” has the ability to accelerate whenever climate gets hotter, withdrawing more CO2, and slowing down if temperatures fall, or if less CO2 is available. Through this “thermostat” weathering stabilises climate over the 100 thousand year time scale. Tectonic activity is also a key player, as movements between segments of the Earth’s crust creates geomorphic relief that accelerates the formation of soils by weathering. At GFZ we explore these relationships with sophisticated isotope geochemichal methods. We find that weathering and soil formation is subject to strict “limits”, and that at present, Earth’s surface has the right kind of landscapes to make the “thermostat” work. Silicate weathering will, eventually, reduce the anthropogenic CO2 peak to pre-industrial levels. But the time required to do so is some hundred thousand years. The much faster fluxes of carbon into the Earth’s biomass and oceans dominate changes in greenhouse gas concentrations over the human time scale, but they would not do this effectively without the geologic thermostat roughly stabilising temperature in the background.

Description: The geomagnetic field shields our habitat against solar wind and galactic cosmic rays. Since the magnetic shielding influences cosmic ray induced ionization of the atmosphere on centennial time-scales, it might have effects on cloud formation and consequently climate. In order to identify possible links between geomagnetic variations and climate change, which are controversially discussed, good global geomagnetic field reconstructions on multi-centennial to millennial time-scales are a prerequisite to interpret records of climate change. Scientists from GFZ together with collaborators from the US, Switzerland and Great Britain have worked on millennial scale magnetic field models for nearly 10 years. A first model spanning the past 10 kyrs, the Holocene, was published last year. The resolution and accuracy of the model is still limited due to data distribution and quality, but higher resolution models for the past 3 kyrs are feasible and have been published previously. These models provide continuous descriptions of dipole moment and tilt variations through the Holocene and of the global field intensity distribution, which all are relevant to estimate the magnetic shielding effect.

Description: Since the onset of rapid modern industrialization some 140 years ago, the mean global temperature has risen by 0.8 °C. This shift to warmer temperatures is not only a result of natural factors but is also caused by anthropogenic influence mainly due to intensified land use and the combustion of fossil fuels leading to higher greenhouse gas emissions. In order to preserve an environment worth living in, both for current and future generations, it is undoubtedly of crucial importance to develop and apply strategies for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. This mitigation concept, as it seems, is a general consensus in the current climate debate. However, viewing climate as a simple system with sharply defined initial and boundary conditions which can be stabilized or even restored to a definite state by merely controlling man-driven factors is not sufficient. This approach has, actually, led to a standstill in the climate negotiations as was demonstrated again at COP17 in Durban at the end of last year. From the geoscientific perspective, climate is not an autonomous system but part of our highly complex Planet Earth with intricate, non-linear interaction of its relevant subsystems atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere and biosphere. Related to this constellation, a regulation of the global climate does not seem possible through mitigation strategies alone. Of equal importance are, therefore, the development and application of adaptation strategies for the inevitable consequences of climate change.

Description: The role of the middle and upper atmosphere for climate has long been underestimated. Recent studies, however, indicate the influence of stratospheric dynamics on large scale weather phenomena. Within the frame of the DFG Priority Program “Climate And Weather of the Sun-Earth System (CAWSES)”, scientists from the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences, contributed to this topic. The studies focussed on the coupling of processes from the troposphere up into the high atmosphere. Our investigations were mainly based on data from the German CHAMP satellite. One of the surprising results is that tropospheric thunderstorms are able to excite global scale atmospheric tidal waves that were still detectable in air density and wind measurements by CHAMP at 400 km altitude. Another sensitive indicator of these tides in the ionosphere is the equatorial electrojet (EEJ). We have shown that the longitudinal variation of the EEJ intensity is controlled closely by the tropical thunderstorm distribution. Another, unexpected finding is that so-called sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events in polar regions have a significant influence on the dynamics of the ionosphere at low latitudes. Also here the EEJ is a suitable indicator of the modifications. It has been shown that the lunar tidal signal of the EEJ is markedly amplified during SSW events. This characteristic feature may be suitable for identifying SSW occurrences for times from which no direct observations of sudden stratospheric warming exists. These examples show that long series of geomagnetic field records can be regarded as a suitable archive of climate variations and may help to improve the climate modelling.

Description: Over the past two decades, our concept about the distribution of life on Earth has fundamentally changed. Microorganisms (bacteria and archaea) colonize not only the upper soil layers, but the underlying sediments and rocks as well. Previous estimates assumed that up to 94 % of all microorganisms live in deep subsurface sediments, but recent findings show that microbial abundance in the marine subsurface is much lower than previously estimated. However, these deeply buried communities are as important as the surface biosphere for driving carbon and nutrient cycling and catalyzing a multitude of reactions between rocks, sediments, and fluids. Due to their low abundance and low metabolic rates, studies of deep biosphere microorganisms require special analytical procedures. Therefore we developed an integrated research strategy, which connects geochemical measurements of sediment properties with microbiological/molecular biological analyses of microbial communities and modeling of microbial pathways/ networks. Our ongoing studies in sediments of the El’gygytgyn Crater Lake and of the South Pacific Gyre show the importance of microorganisms for the element cycles in these extreme environments. The composition of microbial communities, their role in major biogeochemical cycles and their response to changing environmental conditions, however, are still largely unknown. The future research of the German Centre for Geosciences GFZ will extend our knowledge on the role of microorganisms mainly in continental deposits, especially their impact on biogeochemical cycles, mineral weathering as well as on the quality and stability of reservoirs in the broadest sense.

Description: The Earth’s magnetic field has undergone temporal and spatial variations including polarity reversals. Paleomagnetic and historical magnetic field measurements suggest persistent distinct patterns of variation of the geomagnetic field taking place in different regions of the Earth. At least on the millennia time scale these patterns may be explained by the thermal influence of Earth’s mantle on the geodynamo. Whether this influence can already be discerned on the century time scale is still debated. Although, the Earth’s interior is inaccessible for direct observations, the effects of such processes at the top of the core and below are well observed at the Earth’s surface. Several observables of these processes are used to infer the dynamical regime of Earth’s outer core and its interaction with its vicinity.

Description: In cooperation with Central Asian specialists, scientists at the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam are developing a regional hydrometeorological and geodetic Earth observation network to monitor parameters of the water cycle in Central Asia. The activities are part of the CAWa project (www.cawa-project.net), which is funded by the German Federal Foreign Office within the framework of the so-called „Berlin Process”. The decline in systematic observations in mountainous Central Asian headwaters poses a great challenge both to water management and climate and hydrological research. By the end of 2011, the project partners had installed five automatic low-maintenance multi-parameter stations which collect hydrometeorological data as well as GPS and seismic data. The satellite-transferred data of the new stations have high-resolution in time and are transmitted close to real-time. The data will be used for weather and runoff forecasting as well as for scientific questions such as the assessment of climate change and the monitoring of high-altitude glaciers. In addition, scientists at GFZ will use the ground-based station data for the validation and calibration of new remote sensing technologies within the frame of the CryoSat, EnMAP, and GRACE satellite missions.

Description: The twin satellites of the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) were launched on March 17, 2002. With the two satellites orbiting on the same track, the primary mission goal is to map the Earth’s gravity field and its temporal variations with unprecedented accuracy. Furthermore, GRACE provides information on vertical temperature and water vapor distribution of the atmosphere. The masses within the Earth and on its surface are not homogeneously distributed. Many long- to short-term processes, such as molten rock flows in the Earth´s core and mantle, ice mass loss in the Polar Regions as well as water mass redistribution in the oceans or in large river basins cause permanent mass displacements. Since the force of gravity of an object depends on its mass, this irregular mass distribution causes the inhomogeneous gravity field of our planet. Consequently, regions of slightly stronger gravity will affect the leading GRACE satellite first, pulling it slightly away from the trailing satellite. This is reflected by a small change in the inter-satellite distance. Consequently, by a high-precision tracking of the permanently changing distance, tiny mass variations on ground can be measured and are provided as monthly maps of the Earth´s gravity field which provide new insight into many climatological processes in system Earth. But as the lifetime of GRACE is limited and only longtime series can give sufficient accuracy for long-term climate trend estimations, a GRACE-FO (Follow-On) mission, again involving significant GFZ contribution, is currently scheduled to be launched by the end of 2016.

Description: As Alfred Wegener already recognized 100 years ago, the giant southern continent, Gondwanaland, broke about 200 million years ago into several pieces which drifted apart. One part, India, drifted northward until it collided 50 million years ago with Eurasia. This collision created the Himalayan mountain chain and the Tibetan plateau, which are not only very significant geological structures, but are also important parts of the Earth System. The influence of Tibet on the atmospheric circulation and world climate and the ongoing threat of giant collisional earthquakes to the megacities in the Ganges plain must be emphasized. In international cooperation, the GFZ conducted a number of seismic experiments in Tibet, known as INDEPTH experiments, to study details of the deformation of the tectonic plates as a consequence of the collision. As a result the presence of the Indian lithosphere was for the first time seismologically demonstrated to exist several hundred kilometers northwards below Tibet. During the collision the Indian crust was peeled off and contributes to the thickening of the Tibetan crust. The latest phase of the INDEPTH experiments was focused on the northern margin. Using active and passive seismic techniques (wide-angle profiling, receiver functions, surface wave tomography), we have imaged the deep structure below Tibet, showing the configuration of the Tibetan lithosphere between the Indian and Eurasian plates. We also found evidence for unusual properties of the lower crust, which are likely to be responsible for the prevalence of crustal flow in northern Tibet.

Description: Currently, central Europe undergoes distinct changes in regional water balances. In northeast Germany a drying trend prevails, resulting in decreasing water quantities. If this trend continues, a negative influence on ecosystem services, such as the provision of water for human use and wetland conservation, is to be feared. Lake-level records of both short-term (last decades) and longterm perspective (last millennia) offer important hydrological information as they document changes in the local to regional water budget, depending from climatic and human impact. Research on lake hydrology can help to optimise management strategies for rebalancing the landscape water budget. Lake levels in northeast Germany have decreased or intensively fluctuated over the last decades. Examples for the hydrological development of some lakes in the Mecklenburg Lake District are given, showing highly variable local records with some conformity. From a palaeohydrological point of view, until the late Mediaeval regional lake hydrology was predominantly driven by climatic, geomorphic and non-anthropogenic biotic factors. Since the late Mediaeval, human activities have strongly influenced the drainage pattern and the lake water cycle, for instance, by damming of lakes, construction of canals and land cover changes in the lake catchments.

Description: About 41 ka years ago a short but full reversal of the Earth’s magnetic field occurred. First evidence for this event was found in lavas from the French Massif Central by Bonhommet & Babkine (1967). Together with further lavas with magnetization directions that neither resemble a normal nor a reversed polarity of the Earth’s magnetic field (Plenier et al., 2007) a common mean radiometric age of 41 ka (Singer et al., 2009) has been determined for the lavas giving evidence for the ‘Laschamp’ event. This event was named after a village close to the type locality. Paleointensity investigations showed that the geomagnetic field during the Laschamp event was characterized by low field intensities (Roperch et al., 1988; Chauvin et al., 1989). Six sediment cores recovered from the SE Black Sea also document the Laschamp excursion. The data give evidence for a 400 years long fully reversed state of the geomagnetic field associated with minimum field strengths less than 10 % compared to the modern field. Parallel to these drastic variations in geomagnetic field strength the Black Sea sediments also recorded fast temperature changes during the last ice age, first found by oxygen isotope analyses on Greenland ice cores (Dansgaard et al., 1993; Svensson et al., 2008). Thus, geomagnetic field variations could be directly paralleled to climatic variability throughout the last ice age in great detail, testing the hypothesis that there might be a link between both processes. However, data from the Black Sea unequivocally exclude a direct impact of the Earth’s magnetic field on climate variability.

Description: Present-day sea level rise is an important issue due to its potential impact on densely populated areas close to the oceans. The global mean sea level rise of more than 3 mm/year during the last two decades has regional excesses, which can be four times larger or smaller than the average. The main factors driving the observed sea level rise and its non-uniformity are the warming of the global oceans, oceanic mass transport and the import of additional water into the ocean. GFZ is working on the estimation of sea level variability and trends based on satellite radar altimetry. An important aspect is the monitoring of the vertical movements of tide gauge stations using GPS measurements which also ensure the precession and long-term stability of the altimeter measurements. Another question still under debate is how much of the observed sea level rise can be attributed to ocean warming and to melting of land ice, resp. With the availability of the GRACE-mission it is now feasible to study this question on global and regional basis.

Description: Geodynamic processes inside planet earth drive crustal scale tectonics and surface processes some of which are associated with geohazards. Because the driver is slow, hazardous events occur infrequent enough to escape society’s generally short-term awareness. However, its ultimate impact on society can be significant as evidenced by recent geo-catastrophes like the Sumatra and Japan subduction earthquakes and tsunami. Physical modelling of geohazards therefore becomes an increasingly important tool to understand our longterm exposure. At GFZ we combine analogue and numerical models in order to better understand the interplay between geodynamic processes at depth and geohazards like earthquakes, landslides and tsunamis. By simulating long time series of continuous and episodic processes, we provide archives of potentially hazardous events that allow statistical analysis beyond the instrumental record and, together with physics-based modeling a deeper knowledge of the underlying processes with the aim to provide probabilistic and, where reasonable, deterministic predictions of spatio-temporal pattern of tectonic hazards.

Description: Processes near the Earth’s surface are linked to the deep mantle and core. From plate reconstructions, we can infer where slabs have been subducted through geologic time and the distribution of slabs throughout the mantle, which can be compared with seismic tomographic images. When slabs approach the core-mantle boundary (CMB), they push the thermal boundary layer ahead, leading to large lateral variations in heat flux from the core to the mantle: Beneath regions of subduction, we compute heat flux of several hundred mW/m2, whereas in areas where hot material has resided for long times, it is 〈 10 mW/m2. CMB heat flux likely influences the geodynamo, yet we are only beginning to understand such core-mantle processes. Seismology indicates there are large domes of geochemically distinct materials in the lowermost mantle which possibly represent old oceanic crust that was subducted during the billions of years of plate tectonics. Hot mantle plumes are mainly generated from the margins of lower mantle heterogenieties, where hot material pushed ahead of slabs is forced to rise. The largest and hottest plumes entrain a large amount (up to 20 %) of the former oceanic crust and carry it to the base of the lithosphere. This material has lower melting temperature than “normal” peridotitic mantle and contains huge amounts of CO2, HCl and other components that are toxic for the environment. Mantle plumes rich in such material produce exceptional volume of melts and cause extreme pollution of the atmosphere and hydrosphere. This happened 252 Mln years ago, when millions of cubic km of lava were erupted in Siberia in the time of a few hundred thousand years or less. That led to the Permo-Triassic mass extinction, the largest environmental catastrophe in Earth history when more than 90 % of all species on land and in the ocean became extinct.

Description: For more than one and a half decades, the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences has been engaged in the analysis of the reality content of images, especially the Dutch landscape paintings of the 17 th Century. Initially, the focus lay on the research question whether the pictures are suitable to be used as climate archives. Very soon it became apparent, however, that landscape paintings offer no reliable proxy data for climate research. Natural archives are far more precise. Historical and art historical arguments may provide information on the limits of the validity of scientific content of the painting. Conversely, however, it could be shown that the natural sciences in collaboration with art history and other social science disciplines allow an improved access to the interpretation of the paintings. In particular, for the analysis of climatological, meteorological, and geological aspects of landscape painting geosciences prove to be a valuable tool.

Description: Trees are a substantial part of the human environment. As long living plants, tree growth is governed by environmental and climate changes within their habitat. The growth rings of their wood record the temporal dynamics of tree physiological reactions to these changes. Physical and chemical analyses of tree rings provide exactly dated and annually resolved data of environmental and climate variability of the past 14.000 years. The wide distribution of trees over various regions of the world, including those with greatest population densities and also marginal areas allows to gain information about local and regional consequences of global climate change. Tree rings of oak planks from a Neolithic wooden well discovered and excavated near Erkelenz in the Lower Rhine Embayment were analysed for their ratios of carbon and oxygen isotopes (13C/12C, 18O/16O) for the time period 5320 to 5081 BC. The climate reconstruction derived from the tree-ring isotope records revealed that the average air temperature of the vegetation period decreased constantly by ca. 2 °C during a period of 95 years between 5270 to 5175 BC. Furthermore, abrupt temperature changes of 1.5 to 2 °C within 5 to 10 year periods were reconstructed, which coincided with considerable changes in moisture conditions, especially during the 20 – 30 years prior to the construction of the wooden well.

Description: Understanding and predicting of atmospheric temperature and water vapor variations is a key issue for characterizing global change. To precisely determine the current and future variations on a global scale, accurate atmospheric observations with satellites are indispensable. We introduce an innovative and very precise satellite based atmospheric observation technique, which became operational during the recent years, pioneered also by the work of GFZ technicians and scientists: GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) Radio Occultation (RO). The technique is based on the influence of the Earth’s atmosphere on the propagation of navigation signals (L-Band, 1.2 and 1.5 GHz). A key parameter for this influence is the bending angle of the signal path from the transmitting navigation to the receiving Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellite, which depends on atmospheric temperature and water vapor. The GNSS RO method is currently applied aboard several LEO satellites, as GRACE, TerraSAR-X, TanDEM-X, COSMIC and Metop. We also present recent scientific GFZ results related to the characterization of global atmospheric variations using the world-wide unique long-term GNSS RO data set from the GFZ geoscience satellite CHAMP (2000-2010). Hereby, tropopause temperature and altitude properties, precisely derived from the GNSS RO data, are also used to reveal even very small variations of the global atmosphere.

Description: Understanding the electrical conductivity of earth materials is important to decipher structures and processes in Earth’s deep interior. Electromagnetic deep sounding methods are used to unravel structures at depths from a few tens of meters to tens of kilometres. The Geo-Electromagnetic Group of GFZ is interested in all aspects of this research field: sensor and instrument development, novel algorithms for signal processing and data inversion, conductivity measurements on rock samples and application of the method to basic and applied research topics. We present examples from the San Andreas Fault, California, South Africa and the North German Basin.
