    Description: Site 604, from the uppermost continental rise 100 mi. southeast of Atlantic City, New Jersey, was investigated for diatoms, utilizing the processing methods of Abbott (1978, doi:10.1016/0377-8398(78)90009-9). Most of this assemblage is poorly preserved and appears to be reworked from Miocene and Eocene deposits.

    Description: Good faunal preservation in the upper part of the Planorotatites pseudomenardii Zone at Deep Sea Drilling Project Site 605, northwestern Atlantic, allows a biometric analysis of the upper Paleocene planktonic foraminiferal species Planorotatites pseudomenardii (Belli), a keeled species that probably developed from a middle Paleocene unkeeled Planorotalites form. Multivariate analysis shows a consistent separation of all Planorotatites specimens into two groups, which are differentiated by the presence or absence of a complete keel; other variables are only of minor importance. The keeled group coincides with P. pseudomenardii. We recognize only one unkeeled species, Planorotalites chapmani (Parr), with Planorotalites ehrenbergi (Bolli), Planorotalites imitata (Subbotina), Planorotalites planoconica (Subbotina), Planorotalites troelseni (Loeblich and Tappan), and Planorotalites hausbergensis (Gohrbrandt) as junior synonyms. P. chapmani ranges from the middle Paleocene to at least the top of the upper Paleocene. The morphology of P. pseudomenardii does not change significantly, and although the frequency of Planorotalites is variable, the proportion of P. pseudomenardii to all Planorotalites varies only slightly around 65% in the upper two-thirds of its range at Site 605. However, in the top 1.5 m of its range the proportion of P. pseudomenardii decreases; in the same section, all Planorotalites specimens show a reduction in the size of their tests, suggesting that a temporary change in environmental conditions led to the exit of P. pseudomenardii\ in Magnetozone C24R at Site 605—apparently higher than expected from current standard zonations. Unkeeled Planorotalites, in contrast to R. pseudomenardii, persisted and regained normal size. The entry of P. pseudomenardii at Site 605 cannot be described in the same detail because of low frequencies of Planorotalites specimens and an erratic distribution of P. pseudomenardii in the lower part of its range. Many of the washed residues of the samples from these sediments are dominated by radiolarians, and the poorly preserved foraminiferal faunas may have abundant benthics, indicating carbonate dissolution. The initially low frequencies of P pseudomenardii relative to the unkeeled Planorotalites show a strong negative correlation with the total amount of radiolarians per sample and could be the result of preferential preservation, as well as of the same environmental conditions that caused the abundance of radiolarians.

    Description: The main objective of the project was to develop a geochemical method for exploration of ores associated with granitic rocks. Fe and Mn oxidates were sampled in streambeds and lakes from 129 localities in Southeastern Norway. 65 of these localities are situated in the northern Oslo Graben. The samples were examined mineralogically and chemically by a variety of methods. Geochemical maps of the element content in oxidates show regional distribution patterns for several elements. Sampling and analysis of oxidates can be used in exploration for mineralizations such as the Skrukkelia Mo-deposit in the northern Oslo Graben. New anomalies (especially for Zn and W) have been detected. Appendix I contains a description of samples, chemical and mineralogical determinations performed on the samples, backscattered electron image-, X-ray image- and scanning electron image pictures of the oxidate preparates. Appendix II contains spectral plots, point analysis with the microprobe, X-ray diffractograms, analytical results, correlation coefficient matrix, scatterplots, frequency distributions and information on data storage. Appendix III containS maps of the element content in oxidates.

    Description: Sites 595 and 596 of DSDP Leg 91 are located in one of the most poorly studied tracts of seafloor in the world at the time of the survey. During a preparation survey done by the R/V Melville a particular question of geologic regional significance was the lithologic nature of the "reverberant layer" detected in the Southwest Pacific Basin, especially to the north of the site. The drilling also beared on two important aspects of the oceanic crustal composition: the chemistry and petrology of the lavas erupted at rapidly spreading ridges, and the nature and degree of alteration experienced by those lavas over the 100+ m.y. of their posteruptive history.

    Description: The original objective of this leg was to drill a deep hole (planned as ENA-3D) through sediments at the foot of the Atlantic continental rise off the coast of Eastern United States and to sample Jurassic basement.     Description: Leg 94 represents the last of four transects of sites set up by the Ocean Paleoenvironment Panel to examine climatic and oceanographic changes in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. During this leg, a transect of six holes aligned roughly in a south-southwest/north-northeast direction were drilled in the North Atlantic from 37° to 53°N. The principal objective of this transect was to document the magnitude and spectral character of the surface-ocean response to high-latitude climatic change in the northern hemisphere during the Neogene.

    Description: The Mississippi Fan is a broad, arcuate accumulation of Pleistocene deep-water sediments deposited in the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Major objectives for drilling the Mississippi Fan were to place the fan lobes into a time-stratigraphic framework, to determine if the midfan channel is migratory in nature, to establish the lithological characteristics of the acoustical high-amplitude zone present near the bottom of the channel fill, to analyze if sand is transported to the lower fan and in which depositional mode it is emplaced, to confirm or modify existing fan models, and to determine the physical and chemical characteristics of these deep-sea fan deposits. In addition to the nine sites situated on the Mississippi fan, two sites (618 and 619) were occupied on the continental slope off Louisiana in intraslope basins formed as the result of active salt diapirism.

    Description: The distribution of rare earth elements (REE) in ferromanganese nodules from DOMES Site A has been determined by instrumental neutron activation methods. The concentrations of the REE vary markedly. Low concentrations characterize samples from a depression (the valley), in which Quaternary sediments are thin or absent; high concentrations are found in samples from the surrounding abyssal hills (the highlands) where the Quaternary sediment section is relatively thick. Moreover, the valley nodules are strongly depleted in the light trivalent REE (LREE) and Ce compared with nodules from the highlands, some of the former showing negative Ce anomalies. The REE abundances in the nodules are strongly influenced by the REE abundances in coexisting bottom water. Some controls on the REE chemistry of bottom waters include: a) the more effective removal of the LREE relative to the HREE from seawater because of the greater degree of complexation of the latter elements with seawater ligands, b) the very efficient oxidative scavenging of Ce on particle surfaces in seawater, and c) the strong depletion of both Ce and the LREE in, or a larger benthic flux of the HREE into, the Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) which flows through the valley. The distinctive REE chemistry of valley nodules is a function of their growth from geochemically evolved AABW. In contrast, the REE chemistry of highland nodules indicates growth from a local, less evolved seawater source.

    Description: Fifteen iron oxide accumulations from the bottoms of two Finnish lakes ("lake ores") were found to contain as much as 50% Fe. Differential X-ray powder diffraction and selective dissolution by oxalate showed that the samples consisted of poorly crystallized goethite and ferrihydrite. The crust ores of one lake had higher ferrihydrite to goethite ratios than the nodular ores of the other lake. The higher ferrihydrite proportion was attributed to a higher rate of Fe2+ supply from the ground water and/or a higher rate of oxidation as a function of water depth and bottom-sediment permeability. Values of Al-for-Fe substitution of the goethites determined from unit-cell dimensions agreed with those obtained from chemical extraction if the unit-cell volume rather than the c dimension was used. In very small goethite crystals a slight expansion of the a unit-cell dimension is probaby compensated by a corresponding contraction of the c dimension, so that a contraction of the c dimension need not necessarily be caused by Al substitution. The goethites of the two lakes differed significantly in their Al-for-Fe substitutions and hence in their unit-cell sizes, OH-bending characteristics, dehydroxylation temperatures, dissolution kinetics, and Mössbauer parameters. The difference in Al substitution (0 vs. 7 mole %) is attributed to the Al-supplying power of the bottom sediments: the silty-clayey sediments in one lake appear to have supplied A1 during goethite formation, whereas the gravelly-sandy sediments in the other lake did not. The compositions of the goethites thus reflect their environments of formation.

    Description: A manganese oxide encrustation (2.5 kg) was dredged, in an island arc setting, downslope of Bertrand bank, a seamount culminating at 70-m depth and located NNE of Grande-Terre, Guadeloupe, and SE of Antigua, West Indies. A thorough texturai analysis indicated a rhythmic precipitation and growth polarity as well as mineralogical ( 10 A tektomanganate) and geochemical (low concentrations of Ni, Cu, Co, Zn, Pb and REE) criteria, point to a submarine hydrothermal origin for most of the sample. The crust was coated with a fine ferromanganese oxide cortex deposited iii a "normal" oceanic environment; it also included micritic fillings, a main pyroclastic zone near the top of the crust, and a Mg-Al sulphate deposit. Planktonic foraminifera coeval with the precipitation of the manganese oxide indicate an age of ca. 3 m. y. (upper Pliocene); i.e., more than 20 m. y. after the cessation of the volcanic activity of the Lesser Antilles outer arc that was responsible for the buildup of the Bertrand seamount. Furthermore, the genesis of the crust is not linked to the activity of the contemporaneous inner arc (Miocene to Present), particularly of its nearmost segment (Basse Terre, Guadeloupe-Montserrat) located about 50 km to the West. The authors suggest that the manganese oxide is the result of convective circulation of sea water through a faulted system occurring in an area of intense seismic activity. The remobilization of chemical elements (Mn, S, etc.) within the seamount volcanic core bas probably affected a substratum that was still hydrothermally altered during the previous volcanic activity of the outer arc. The authors insist on the interest in using texturai analysis for Fe/Mn oxide investigations.

As proposed to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in 1984, the Collection was organized, labelled, and indexed so that efficient use by outside investigators would be possible. Since the late 1990s, the collection has been transferred to the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Washington, D. C., U.S.A where it is available for study.

    Description: The chemical and mineralogical composition of burrowed sediment, recovered in 66 box cores at latitude 9°25'N and longitude 151°15'W in the equatorial Pacific, demonstrates the important role of infauna in determining the geochemistry of pelagic sediment. Haloed burrows, approximately 3 cm across, were present in many of the cores. Within early Tertiary sediment that was covered by less than 5 cm of surface Quaternary sediment in several cores, the burrows in cross-section consist of three units: (1) a dark yellowish-brown central zone of Quaternary sediment surrounded, by (2) a pale yellowish-orange zone (the halo) of Tertiary sediment, which is surrounded by (3) a metal-oxide precipitate; the enclosing Tertiary sediment is dusky brown. Several elements - Mn, Ni, Cu, Co, Zn, Sb and Ce - have been leached from the light-colored halo, whereas Cr, Cs, Hf, Rb, Sc, Ta, Th, U, the rare earth elements exclusive of Ce, and the major oxides have not been leached. The metal-oxide zone, 1-5 mm thick, contains as much as 16% MnO2, as the mineral todorokite. The composition of the todorokite, exclusive of the admixed Tertiary sediment, resembles the composition of the metal deficit of the halo and also the composition of surface ferromanganese nodules that have been interpreted as having a predominantly diagenetic origin. Thus bioturbation contributes not only to the redistribution of metals within pelagic sediment, but also to the accretion of ferromanganese nodules on the sea floor.

    Description: Ferromanganese concretions from the Svalbard shelf in the Barents Sea show slightly convex shale-normalized REE patterns with no Eu anomalies. Concretions from the Gulf of Bothnia, northern part of the Baltic Sea, exhibit an enrichment of light REE and negative Eu anomalies. This difference is interpreted as a consequence of different conveyor mechanisms of the REE to the sediment. It is suggested that dissolving biogenic debris contributes to the convex pattern obtained in the Barents Sea, whereas an inorganic suspended fraction with scavenged REE is the main carrier in the Gulf of Bothnia. During oxic diagenesis in the sediment, the scavenged REE are set free into the porewater and contribute to the distribution pattern in concretions found in the Gulf of Bothnia. Small Mn-rich spheroidal concretions are enriched two to five times in REE compared to average shale, whereas Mn-poor flat concretions are low in REE. Specific surface area of the concretion and the depth of burial in the oxidized surface sediment are two factors that strongly affect the enrichment of the REE. Weak Ce anomalies are present in the analysed concretions and a redox level dependence is seen.

    Description: Morphological and U-Pb isotope studies on sedimentary zircons reflect the orogenic evolution of their former host rocks. The orogenic history of detrital zircons from the Trinity Peninsula Formation (TPF) defines the former geological surrounding of the sedimentation basin of the TPF. Same few weil rounded, polycyclic zircons of Precambrian age and Cambrian overprint give hints for an old cratonic source rock. Because of their very low frequency compared with euhedral types, the contribution of an cratonic shield area to the bulk of the sedimentary debris is neglectable low. Euhedral zircons of granitoid origin and Carboniferous age indicate a derivation from an area of widespread Carboniferous intrusions. Except for southern South America and unsurveyed regions in the Antarctic Peninsula itself, no region could deliver zircons with a Carboniferous age record. The only acceptable explanation for the origin of these zircons is a position of the Antarctic Peninsula during the sedimentation of the TPF approximately southwest of southern South America.

    Description: The rock mass of fluvial and fluvioglacial deposits of the Late Holocene has been studied at the altitude of 1830 m a.s.l. using the palynologic, carpologic, geomorphologic, and geochronologic methods. It was ascertained that in the mid-Subatlantic period the area of the present-day beech elfin woodland was occupied by a belt of alpine meadows. Thus, the lower border of alpine meadows ran 370-400 m lower than the recent level, pointing to a rather significant cooling of the climate that occurred from ca 2nd cent. A.D.

    Description: Chemical and mineralogical compositions of ferromanganese oxide coatings on rocks dredged from the New England Seamounts, the Sierra Leone Rise and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge near the Equator have been determined in an investigation of regional differences in Atlantic ferromanganese deposits. Most encrustations are clearly of hydrogenous origin, consisting mainly of todorokite and delta MnO2, but several recovered from the equatorial fracture zones may be hydrothermal accumulations. Differences in the chemistry of the water column and in growth rates of the ferromanganese coatings may be important in producing this regional contrast in composition. Fine-scale changes in element abundances within the encrustations indicate that the nature of the substrate has little influence on compositional variations.

    Description: Presently, the intermediate depths of the North Atlantic Ocean are occupied by a great lens of warm, saline water whose source is the Mediterranean Sea. This water flows both westward and northward, finally entering the Norwegian Sea where it may contribute to the formation of North Atlantic Deep Water. The Late Neogene history of Mediterranean Outflow in the Atlantic can be monitored at DSDP-IPOD Site 548 on the continental slope Southwest of Ireland using benthic Foraminifera oxygen isotope values. Isotopic data from 154 samples indicate that Mediterranean water was absent from the mid-depth North Atlantic from 3.4 to 3.2 Ma ago. However, at about 2.9 Ma ago the isotopic values at Site 548 diverge from those recorded from the deep North Atlantic and they can be interpreted to indicate the appearance of a new water mass, possibly Mediterranean water, in the North Atlantic water column. This appearance may be related to climatic changes that occurred around the Mediterranean Basin at about 2.9 Ma ago. The analysis of 189 samples for grain-size distributions shows that a significant increase in the silt-size fraction occurs at the same level that isotopic analysis indicates a change in bottom waters at Site 548. The grainsize data support the hypothesis that mid-depth water-mass changes occurred at about 2.9 Ma ago.

    Description: Upper Berriasian to lower Aptian calcareous nannofossil assemblages have been studied from a siliciclastic deep-sea fan complex and a subjacent limestone sequence drilled beneath the lower continental rise in the western North American Basin, 270 miles (435 km) off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina (USA). Sharp lithologic facies changes and reworking by turbidites complicate the biostratigraphic interpretation, but provide an excellent opportunity to better distinguish "nearshore" from open-ocean nannofossil species, and to investigate the introduction of neritic taxa into the deep-see environment, a phenomenon that appears to have been widespread within the circum-North Atlantic during Neocomian times. Well-preserved assemblages in dark, carbonaceous claystones were probably displaced from the oxygen minimum zone along the upper slope or outer shelf. Neritic, continental margin species prevalent in this facies include the holococcolith Zebrashapka vanhintei n. gen., n. sp., Lithraphidites alatus magnus n. spp., Pickelhaube furtiva n. gen., and a host of nannoconids and micrantholiths. A qualitative evaluation of widely used guide fossils suggests that the triad of proposed markers for the base of Roth's Zone NC3 make their first appearances in the following (ascending) order: Diadorhombus rectus, TUbodiscus verenae, Calcicalathina oblongata. Of these, we chose the nominative species for the zone, T. verenae, to mark its base and to approximate the Berriasian/Valangian boundary. Cyclagelosphaera deflandrei is strongly affected by diagenesis and is therefore not a reliable index species for the base of Zone NC4 near the Valanginian/Hauterivian boundary (the last occurrence of T. verenae is also not suitable there). In addition, Lithraphidites bollii, a form apparently confined to the low latitudes of the Tethyan region, was absent at the more temperate Site 603 and not available as a subzonal marker for the upper Hautervian-lower Barremian (mid-NC4 and mid-NC5, respectively). Cruciellipsis cuvillieri, however, provides a reliable datum just below the Hauterivian/Barremian boundary (base of NC5), despite the potential for reworking in this section. Nannoconids tend to be reworked in this section, and do not provide trustworthy forms to mark the Barremian/Aptian boundary (base of NC6). Hayesites irregularis n. comb, probably does provide a useful first appearance datum within the lower Aptian, if it is not confused with a more birefringent and globular form, Rucinolithus terebrodentarius n. sp. Rhagodiscus angustus is mimicked by a similar form (Zeughrabdotusl pseudoangustus n. sp.), which apparently ranges down to the Hauterivian, thus Lithastrinus floralis provides a more useful first appearance datum for the base of the middle-upper Aptian Rhagodiscus angustus Zone (NC7). Aside from the new taxa mentioned above, the following are also described: Cretarhabdusl delicatus n. sp. and Cyclagelosphaera jiangii n. sp.

    Description: Methane is the major hydrocarbon gas measured in Vacutainer samples from Holes 603D and 613 ( C1/sumCn 〉 0.999). In Hole 613 the concentration of this dry hydrocarbon gas is highest (7.4 x 10 **5 ppm max.) in the upper 60 to 120 m, then decreases erratically to low trace levels by 261 m sub-bottom (lower Pliocene). No gas accumulations were observed in older sediments. Methane from both holes is strongly depleted in both 13C (d13C, - 75 to -85 per mil) and deuterium (D/H, - 175 to -262 per mil), indicating the biogenic origin of the methane. The C and H isotopic compositions support methanogenesis via the CO2-reduction pathway; this is also corroborated by the dissolved-sulfate and alkalinity minima at these depths. The relationship between D/H of the methane and coexisting interstitial water from Site 613 further show the methanogenesis to be primarily by CO2 reduction.

    Description: A major objective of DSDP Leg 95 (New Jersey Transect) was to investigate the effects of eustatic sea-level fluctuation and crustal subsidence on the depositional and erosional patterns of the Atlantic continental margin in the Baltimore Canyon trough area. Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites 612 and 613 were drilled on the New Jersey continental slope and rise during this leg. A more specific goal of Leg 95 was to investigate calcareous and siliceous microfossil biostratigraphy in order to identify biostratigraphic gaps and to intercorrelate the various microfossil zonations for the New Jersey margin. This study of radiolarians from Sites 612 and 613, and from Atlantic Slope Project (ASP) Site ASP 15, demonstrates that although radiolarians occur throughout the Cenozoic section in this region, they are most useful for biostratigraphic control in the upper Paleogene part of the stratigraphic record. Results of this investigation indicate that several biostratigraphic gaps occur in the Cenozoic sedimentary sequence penetrated by the three drill holes. Upper Paleogene radiolarians are well preserved, abundant, and diverse. Although some tropical taxa are rare or absent, sufficient age-diagnostic species are present for biostratigraphic determinations. In comparison, lower Paleogene radiolarians are poorly preserved because pronounced silica diagenesis formed porcellanites in some stratigraphic intervals. The Neogene radiolarians faunas are rare and moderately well preserved at all the sites investigated here. Neogene assemblages are dominated by spongodiscids and porodiscids (similar to faunas of modern cold/temperate shelf waters), and contain few taxa useful for biostratigraphic determinations.

    Description: A 2-5-cm-thick, middle to lower middle Eocene, vitreous ash layer of rhyolitic composition can be correlated between Sites 605 and 613 on the uppermost continental rise off New Jersey. The ash is tentatively interpreted as a windtransported submarine fallout tephra from a major subaerial eruption of the Bermuda volcano, shortly after its emergence above sea level. The K-Ar dates of 45 Ma for a coarse size fraction of the two ashes and 40 Ma for a fine fraction of one of the samples are discordant and are only in rough agreement with the biostratigraphic age.

    Description: On the basis of lithologic, foraminiferal, seismostratigraphic, and downhole logging characteristics, we identified seven distinctive erosional unconformities at the contacts of the principal depositional sequences at Site 612 on the New Jersey Continental Slope (water depth 1404 m). These unconformities are present at the Campanian/Maestrichtian, lower Eocene/middle Eocene, middle Eocene/upper Eocene, upper Eocene/lower Oligocene, lower Oligocene/upper Miocene, Tortonian/Messinian, and upper Pliocene/upper Pleistocene contacts. The presence of coarse sand or redeposited intraclasts above six of the unconformities suggests downslope transport from the adjacent shelf by means of sediment gravity flows, which contributed in part to the erosion. Changes in the benthic foraminiferal assemblages across all but the Campanian/Maestrichtian contact indicate that significant changes in the seafloor environment, such as temperature and dissolved oxygen content, took place during the hiatuses. Comparison with modern analogous assemblages and application of a paleoslope model where possible, indicate that deposition took place in bathyal depths throughout the Late Cretaceous and Cenozoic at Site 612. An analysis of two-dimensional geometry and seismic fades changes of depositional sequences along U.S.G.S. multichannel seismic Line 25 suggests that Site 612 was an outer continental shelf location from the Campanian until the middle Eocene, when the shelf edge retreated 130 km landward, and Site 612 became a continental slope site. Following this, a prograding prism of terrigenous debris moved the shelf edge to near its present position by the end of the Miocene. Each unconformity identified can be traced widely on seismic reflection profiles and most have been identified from wells and outcrops on the coastal plain and other offshore basins of the U.S. Atlantic margin. Furthermore, their stratigraphic positions and equivalence to similar unconformities on the Goban Spur, in West Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and the Western Interior of the U.S. suggest that most contacts are correlative with the global unconformities and sea-level falls of the Vail depositional model.

    Description: 57Fe Mössbauer spectra of 15 oceanic sediment samples collected from Site 612 (Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 95) were recorded. These spectra showed that most of the iron in the sediments was present as high-spin, paramagnetic Fe2+ and Fe3+. The ferrous iron was mainly distributed in terrigenous clays and biogenic carbonates. The variation of the Mössbauer parameters for Fe2+ with sub-bottom depth suggests that the main Fe2+-bearing component changed with geologic time. The amount of iron in each iron-bearing phase as estimated from the corresponding peak areas in the spectra also changed with depth. These variations in the Mössbauer parameters and peak areas are correlated with lithologic changes in the sediment column.

    Description: Site 612, located some 100 km southeast of Atlantic City in the northwest Atlantic Ocean, was cored to a total depth of 675.3 m below seafloor. The final 114.96 m recovered an Upper Cretaceous succession that can be assigned to the late Campanian and early Maestrichtian. The dark mudstones of Campanian age contain an impoverished fauna of planktonic foraminifers, while the paler, nannofossil chalks of Maestrichtian age contain a typically diverse planktonic fauna. The environment represented by the Campanian fauna indicates the presence of slightly anoxic water in the vicinity of the New Jersey Slope at that time.

    Description: Baltimore Canyon Trough, the most intensely studied offshore sedimentary basin of the U.S. Atlantic margin, encompasses the coastal plain, continental shelf, and continental slope of New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and (in part) Virginia. On the basis of the extensive published record of the geological and geophysical investigations of this area, the New Jersey margin was chosen as the most suitable location for constructing the first marginwide stratigraphic transect. As envisioned, the transect would extend from the outcrop belt in central New Jersey to a location 700 km distant on the lower continental rise. Initial Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) core holes on the slope and upper rise would emphasize the Cenozoic and Upper Cretaceous sections, as dictated by the limitations of openhole drilling.     Description: Fifty-nine samples from the basal 110 m of DSDP Hole 612 (United States Atlantic Margin) were analyzed for palynomorph content. In total, 84 species and subspecies of dinoflagellate cysts were recorded which, on comparison with published data and shipboard analyses, indicate a Campanian to Maestrichtian age for this part of the succession. The Campanian/Maestrichtian contact is taken to occur in the upper part of Core 612-69.
