    Notes: Hydrodynamic characteristics of an in vitro membrane permeation system for controlled drug delivery studies were investigated by measuring dissolution rates of benzoic acid in various aqueous solutions of polyethylene glycol 400. The mass transfer coefficient was well correlated in terms of three dimensionless numbers: Sherwood, Schmidt, and Reynolds numbers. By using the correlation equation, the intrinsic permeation rate of testosterone through silicone membranes was precisely extracted from the experimental data obtained under various nonideal flow conditions.

    Notes: A new device for solid-solid and gas-gas continuous mixing, based on the impingement of two streams, was developed and successfully tested. It was found that in comparison to other available solid-solid pneumatic mixers, such as the fluidized bed, spouted bed, air mixer, and mixing silo, the new device is very convenient and easy to operate and more energy-efficient. This is also true for gas-gas mixing when compared with a fluidized bed. A model for the gas phase behavior in the mixing of two gases was successfully tested, which supplements the picture of the solid particles behavior predicted from a model previously derived by the authors.

    Notes: Both intrinsic kinetics and rates of decomposition in larger particles were determined for a Colorado shale by weight-loss measurements in TGA-type equipment. The data for small granular particles indicated first-order intrinsic kinetics up to a fractional weight change that depended on the temperature level. In the experiments with larger particles, gas, particle-surface, and particle-center temperatures measured in separate runs showed that both gas-to-particle and intra-particle temperature differences were significant.A heat transfer model was evaluated by using the intrinsic kinetics data, measured heat transfer coefficients, and shale properties from the literature, to predict weight loss and particle-center temperatures for the larger particles. Comparison with observed results showed good agreement in general, although there was some deviation in weight-loss results at low temperatures.The combined set of intrinsic kinetics data and rates for larger particles should be useful for further studies of pyrolysis models.

    Notes: Many measurements of ice growth rates in NaCl solutions have been made to determine the role of natural convection in the control of such growth rates. The results of two analyses are presented. In one, only thermal natural convection is treated for growth in pure water. The second treats the simultaneous effects of both mass and thermal natural convection in salt solutions. This second analysis correctly predicts higher ice growth rates in dilute salt solutions than in pure water.

    Notes: Prior studies have demonstrated that char gasification rates vary with conversion, showing a maximum at an intermediate level. In this work experimentally determined char-air reaction rates and corresponding pore structures are compared to assess the applicability of a previously proposed random pore model and to extract pertinent chemical and physical parameters. Results on six different chars are presented and analyzed to obtain structure parameters, intrinsic kinetics, and activation energies. Agreement between two independent evaluations of the structure parameters demonstrates the degree of applicability of the random pore model and supports the view that rate variations with conversion are controlled by pore structural changes, even though overall rates also include contributions of intrinsic reactivity.

    Notes: The nature of the interaction between the flowing phases in a cocurrent gas-liquid downflow through packed beds depends on the type of the flow regime. The interaction is poor and geometric in nature in gas-continuous flow and becomes high and dynamic in pulse flow due to gas dispersion, acceleration, and mixing of the liquid in the pulses. Models to calculate pressure drop in each of the flow regimes are presented, taking into account the respective interactions. Experimental data on pressure drops and liquid holdups were measured in gas-continuous flow for 3 mm glass spheres and 6 mm Raschig rings. An air-water system is used. The literature data on pressure drops and the experimental data, covering liquid velocities from 0.001 m/s to 0.029 m/s and gas velocities from 0.097 m/s to 2 m/s, were compared with the calculated values. It was found that the pressure drop due to dynamic interaction can be as low as 10% and as much as 80% of the total pressure drop for the data examined in this work. An empirical correlation for holdup in gas-continuous flow is given for Rashig rings.

In the first case it was assumed that deposition leads to the presence of a reasonably smooth deposite layer over filter grains.     Notes: The kinetics of the reaction of carbon dioxide with mono- and diethanolamine in such nonaqueous solvents as methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol and in water were studied using a stirred tank absorber with a plane gas-liquid interface at 303 K. The reaction was found to be of first order with respect to carbon dioxide for every solvent. The order of reaction with respect to ethanolamine was found to be unity only for an aqueous solution of monoethanolamine and for the other solutions, ranged from 1.4 to 2, depending on the solvent species. The reaction order was increased in the order of water, methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol. The variation of the reaction order with the solvent species could be explained in terms of a reaction scheme via a zwitterion. Almost linear dependence of the logarithm of the reaction rate constant on the solubility parameter of the solvent was derived.

    Notes: Adsorption of organics inot activated carbon particles within a fixed-bed adsorber is modeled using the concept of mixing cells. The adsorption isotherm of these organics is taken to be rectangular because of the commonly observed strong affinity of organics into activated carbons. The model equations are solved by a singular perturbation method, and this results in a graphical procedure similar to that of McCabe and Thiele used in distillation column design. Such a graphical procedure provides a quick means to determine the adsorbate profiles along the adsorber for a given time and also the breakthrough curve, which reflects the performance of the adsorber.

    Notes: A theoretical and experimental investigation is presented for mass transfer to a rotating hemispherical electrode when direct current (DC) superimposed with symmetrical triangular- or square-wave alternating current (AC) is used for electrolysis. A film model is used for the analysis of AC concentration components. The limiting AC current density corresponding to a zero instantaneous surface concentration and the phase shift between the applied AC and the periodic potential changes are calculated and compared to the experimental studies. The experimental data agreed with the theoretical prediction to within ±8% in the regime of a dimensionless AC frequency K = (ω/Ω)Sc1/3 greater than 1 and less than 180. The mass transfer behavior with the triangular and square waves is further compared to that of the sinusoidal current. It is found that for a given AC frequency and rotational speed, the limiting AC current density on the electrode decreases in the order of traingular-wave AC 〉 sinusoidal AC 〉 square-wave AC.

    Notes: The surface rejuvenation model of the turbulent burst process, already developed for the momentum and heat transfer processes, is applied to the field of mass transfer. The range of applicability of the theory, previously shown to be valid for the Prandtl number range 0.7 to 64 is extended to Schmidt numbers of 6,500 without introducing any new parameters. Concentration and temperature profiles for high Schmidt and Prandtl numbers are in agreement with experimental data. Theoretical expressions for Sherwood and Stanton numbers are calculated and shown to be in agreement with experimental data over five orders of magnitude.

    Notes: The generalized relationships of Lee and Kesler for the thermodynamic properties of nonpolar fluids have been combined with an accurate equation of state for water which is utilized as the reference substance for polar fluids for reduced temperatures from 0.4 to 2.5 and reduced pressures to 10. The input data required are the critical temperature, critical pressure, acentric factor, and a polarity factor Y obtained from experimental pressure-volume-temperature data. Comparisons between calculated and experimental thermodynamic properties indicate that highly accurate results are obtained by the method of this study for most polar fluids. A modified procedure is presented for the compressibility factors of substances with large acentric factors such as alcohols. Tabulated values of the polar fluid correction terms are presented for the compressibility factor, fugacity coefficient, and enthalpy, entropy, and heat capacity departures for the complete range investigated.

    Notes: The simultaneous diffusion and adsorption of water vapor into specially prepared silica gel and activated carbon desiccants was experimentally studied for laminar flow through an isothermally maintained parallel-plate channel. The equilibrium characteristics and tortuosities of the various desiccant sheets used were experimentally determined.The data were compared with a modified Rosen model. The Rosen model predicts outlet concentrations from the knowledge of adsorption equilibrium constants, diffusion, and mass transfer coefficients. A comparison of computed and measured concentrations as a function of sorption time shows that with independently measured equilibrium and effective diffusion coefficients, the modified Rosen model became completely predictive.

    Notes: A model for the adsorption of phenol in a fixed bed of a polymeric adsorbent is developed. Model parameters (equilibrium parameters, capacity factor, axial dispersion, film mass transfer coefficient, and intraparticle effective diffusivity) are experimentally determined from independent experiments. Numerical solution of the model equations uses the method of lines with double orthogonal collocation in finite elements. The model is used for the prediction of breakthrough curves and is part of a package for the design of cyclic processes.

    Notes: Computer simulations of periodically cycled columns predicted improvements in column performance of greater than 200% for systems with nonlinear equilibrium curves. Experiments distilling methanol-water mixtures have verified those predictions for periodic cycling with a single plate. The extension of the theory to multiple-plate columns fails in usual distillation apparatus due to liquid mixing during the liquid flow period. To overcome this problem a new tray design consisting of a sieve plate and inclined surfaces has introduced an effective liquid time delay. Although the predicted efficiencies of 200% were not realized due to vapor movement hindering the tray action, a wide range of operating conditions provided good overall column efficiencies of 140%.

    Notes: The conventional equilibrium-stage model that uses a component-independent stage efficiency and a nonequilibrium-stage model, in which mass transfer rate equations are solved simultaneously with the stage conservation equations, are employed to solve four representative distillation design problems. There are large differences between the number of stages predicted by the two models for a specific separation of the more volatile component. The differences arise from two causes: the way in which the liquid phase resistances and equilibrium equations are used in the models, and the consequences of diffusional interaction effects. Neglect of the latter may lead to an underdesigned column; there is between a 9 and 15% difference in the stage requirements predicted by the nonequilibrium model with a rigorous mass transfer model and a nonequilibrium model which ignores interaction effects.

    Notes: Tracer diffusivities measured with the Taylor dispersion technique are reported for carbon tetrachloride, s-trioxane, 12-crown-4, 15-crown-5, and 18-crown-6 in acetonitrile, benzene, and chlorobenzene across ranges of temperature. It is demonstrated that Stokes' law corrected with a microfriction factor successfully accounts for the diffusion behavior of even disk-shaped crown ethers. Solute and solvent molecules being effectively spherical in the context of Stokes' law, the tracer diffusion of crown ethers is found to be satisfactorily represented by a rough-hard-sphere model for molecular diffusion. The degree of success increases with decreasing solvent polarity. The diffusion data for carbon tetrachloride are also used to extend the basis of the recently developed reduced equation for the tracer diffusion of nonelectrolytes in liquids over wide temperature ranges.

    Notes: A radiotracer-based method of measuring local particle deposition profiles and reentrainment rates in an electrostatic precipitator has been developed and demonstrated. In tests performed on a pilot-scale precipitator, differences in local deposition profiles obtained with and without a predeposited layer of dust on the plate were observed. Rates of reentrainment due to gas friction (aerodynamic drag) and to particle impaction on the plate were measured separately, and correlated with a semiepirical formula. Both friction and impaction reentrainment rates were found to vary as powers of the difference between the gas velocity and a minimum velocity required for reentrainment. The impaction reentrainment was found to vary as a power of the inlet dust loading.

    Notes: A model is presented which relates the crystal size distribution (CSD) from a mixed-suspension, mixed-product-removal (MSMPR) crystallizer to the distribution of growth rates. This model is based on the assumption that individual contact nuclei have some inherent growth rate which remains constant, but the growth rate may vary from crystal to crystal. The crystal size distribution can be calculated from prior knowledge of the growth rate distribution. Even a limited knowledge of only the coefficient of variation and the mean growth rate permits an approximation of the expected crystal size distribution. Conversely, estimates of the mean and variance of the growth rate distribution can be determined from the moments of the CSD from an MSMPR crystallizer.

    Notes: It is shown that the conventional Smith dead-time compensator can be modified in a fashion which leads to significant improvements in its regulatory capabilities for measurable disturbances or inputs. The proposed modification utilizes effectively the existing prediction capabilities of the conventional dead-time compensator and eliminates the need for a separate feedforward controller in many circumstances under which it is normally employed. The modified dead-time compensator possesses simultaneous feedforward and feedback actions. An additional tuning parameter which controls the degree of dead-time cancellation allows the designer to shape the response according to requirements. Illustrative examples show the advantages of the modified scheme.

    Notes: On-line measurements of temperature and concentration and the global rate for fresh catalyst can be used to estimate a measure of catalyst deactivation. A feedback control policy is obtained from this measure of catalyst deactivation for maintaining the reactor outlet conversion constant with time at a desired level. This feedback control enables one to maintain the desired conversion without any knowledge of deactivation kinetics. These results are applicable to any type of deactivation. The optimal control can easily be taken into consideration for reactor design. This combination of process design and control with due consideration of catalyst deactivation for both is shown to result in a substantial improvement of the reactor performance.

    Notes: A new method of representation of electrolyte solution nonideality is derived, on the basis of similar assumptions, from a model applied by Cruz and Renon (1978) to binary electrolyte solutions. In order to test the validity of the model for representation of strong electrolyte properties, parameters were fitted to osmotic coefficient data for single, completely dissociated salts in aqueous solutions and were used to calculate osmotic coefficients of mixed aqueous electrolytes. Results are compared with those given by Chen's local composition model (Chen et al., 1982; Aspen, 1983) and Pitzer's truncated model (Pitzer, 1973, 1979; Pitzer and Mayorga, 1973; Pitzer and Kim, 1974), the same number of adjustable parameters being used in each case.The average standard deviations for single electrolytes are within 1% in the case of 1-1 salts for the three models, and within 2% in the other cases, except for Chen's model (5%). As for predicted results, both local-composition models yield standard deviations of less than 2%, while the accuracy given by the Pitzer model is better than 1.5%.

    Notes: Rates of mass and momentum transport in narrow flow channels (gaps 0.2-0.5 mm) have been determined over a wide range of flow velocities, 220-7,700 cm/sec (Re 1,300 to 22,000). Existing correlations that apply to smooth channels of much larger hydraulic diameter were found to be valid for the narrow channels as well. However, in the turbulent regime the condition of hydraulic smoothness could be satisfied only when the walls were optically smooth. Transport rates to rough walls were also measured. The ratio of the mass transport to the momentum transport in the form of jD/(f/2) - a measure of the improved mass transfer compared to the increased pressure drop - is given for the smooth and rough-wall cells over the Re range studied.

    Notes: In this work dispersive mixing and chemical reactions are treated simultaneously by resorting to the theory of stochastic processes. A fluidized-bed reactor is modeled by discretizing it into ideally stirred tanks of various sizes corresponding to bubble, cloud, and emulsion phases. All parameters in the model are correlated with known or experimentally obtainable quantities. Examples using a complex chemical reaction are given to demonstrate the applicability of the approach.

    Notes: A semiempirical expression for the Helmholtz energy of mixed electrolyte solutions in solvents mixtures is obtained from the solution of the mean spherical approximation given by Planche and Renon (1981) for a nonprimitive model of interactions. A consistent set of analytical equations for the related thermodynamic properties was further derived and used to represent osmotic coefficient data of strong aqueous electrolytes at 25°C. Data correlation was performed on more than 80 systems up to a 6 M molality using generally one adjustable parameter for each single electrolyte; from these parameters the properties of mixtures can be calculated in a predictive manner without additional parameters.

    Notes: A robust version of the self-tuning regulator is developed. The regulator, which requires relatively little knowledge of system characteristics (estimated order of transfer function polynomials and an upper bound for transportation delays), has been shown to yield stable control and convergence for linear, time-invariant systems. Simulations and practical tests on a large pilot-scale process have shown that the inclusion of a variable forgetting factor and an “extended horizon” control criterion provides the regulator with a sufficient degree of robustness and flexibility to perform well in a nonlinear time-varying environment. The regulator makes use of intuitively easy-to-understand concepts and leaves few degrees of freedom for the potential user. Furthermore, extensive experiments and simulation studies have shown it to be insensitive to choice of initial conditions and dynamic characteristics set by the user.

    Notes: When a small drop or bubble approaches a fluid-fluid interface, a thin liquid film forms between them and begins to drain. As the thickness of the draining film become sufficiently small [about 1,000 Å (100 nm)], the effects of the London-van der Waals forces and of the repulsive force of any electrostatic double layer become important. Lin and Slattery (1982b) developed a hydrodynamic theory for the first portion of the coalescence process: the drainage of the thin liquid film while it is sufficiently thick that the effects of London-van der Waals forces and of electrostatic forces can be ignored. Here the effect of the London-van der Waals forces are included. Given only the drop radius and the required physical properties, the configuration of the film as a function of time is predicted. For the case of a negative disjoining pressure, it is possible to estimate an upper bound for the coalescence time or the time during which a small drop or bubble appears to rest at a phase interface before it coalesces under the influence of London-van der Waals forces.

    Notes: The vacancy solution model of adsorption which uses an activity coefficient equation of the Wilson form has been improved (1) by incorporating temperature dependency into the model, and (2) by development of a functional relationship between the adsorbate-adsorbate binary interaction parameters. This reduces the number of regression parameters and improves the predictive capabilities of the model. Comparisons of this improved model with the Flory-Huggins activity coefficient form of the vacancy solution model are presented for binary and ternary systems. For a priori predictions from pure-component data, the Flory-Huggins form is recommended. If experimental binary data are available for all pairs, the form that most accurately correlates the binary data should be used to predict higher-order systems.

A general framework for analyzing flexibility in chemical process design is presented in this paper. A quantitative index is proposed which measures the size of the parameter space over which feasible steady-state operation of the plant can be attained by proper adjustment of the control variables. The mathematical formulation of this index and a detailed study of its properties are presented. Application of the flexibility in design is illustrated with an example.

    Notes: Catalytic oxidation of CO on alumina-supported platinum was studied in a tubular isothermal reactor with applied concentration transients. A completely automated reactor system capable of switching frequencies as high as 0.2 Hz was constructed.Concentration cycling resulted in reaction rates that were much higher than the maximum rate achievable at steady-state operation. Mapping of the time-averaged carbon dioxide production rate in the time-period duty-fraction plane, resulted in a unique global maximum. We find that the maximum in rate occurs when the switching times are comparable to the characteristic time of the surface reaction. Results of our experiments also rule out significant contribution from the Eley-Rideal mechanism at the temperature range of this work (below 120°C).

    Notes: The recent random-pore model (Bhatia and Perlmutter, 1980, 1981a; Gavalas, 1980) is further developed to account for distributed pore reaction in gas-solid systems. Numerical solutions for the resulting equations are presented for the case when the reaction is accompanied by an increase in volume of the solid phase. It is shown that in such situations pore closure begins with the smaller pores and progresses to the larger ones. For certain pore size distributions seemingly incomplete conversion is found even when sufficient initial porosity exists so that complete pore closure cannot occur.

    Notes: A scheme of on-line optimizing control is presented for a nonadiabatic fixed bed reactor which experiences a highly exothermic reaction. The control scheme has been devised to perform adaptive control of bed temperature and on-line steady state optimization simultaneously.Experiments were conducted with a pilot scale fixed bed reactor where partial oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride occurs. The reactor system was interfaced with a microcomputer for real-time control and optimization. With an objective function consisting of a net profit by producing maleic anhydride plus a penalty term on high bed temperature, it was clearly shown that the reaction conditions were driven to the expected optimum region.

    Notes: The thermal response of a packed bed subject to step changes in fluid temperature was measured in the Peclet number range from 10 to 103. Fluid temperature and particle temperatures were measured independently at six different axial locations in the bed as a function of time. From the temperature breakthrough curves we were able to calculate the spatial separation between the fluid and solid temperature fronts. The measured values were higher by a factor of 2 to 3 than those predicted by traditional heat transfer models. Longitudinal effective thermal conductivities were also computed and compared to theoretical predictions. The new heat transfer model developed in a previous paper is able to account for these differences between experimental results and the predictions of the dispersionconcentric and continuous solid phase models used by previous investigators. Steady-state experiments were used to measure lateral effective thermal conductivities. A temperature gradient was imposed at the top of the bed perpendicular to the flow direction and its spread was measured at different axial locations in the Peclet number range from 10 to 103. The predicted lateral effective thermal conductivities calculated using mass transfer data to estimate the hydrodynamic dispersion effect were significantly lower than the measured values. This is possibly due to the influence of viscosity and density gradients in the flow field in the packed bed.

    Notes: This paper provides a stochastic model for general flow systems with several inlets and outlets, where different fluids are fed through the various inlets. Several process characteristics are derived and discussed. They include the distribution, mean, and variance of the number of visits and total residence time of the various fluid elements to flow regions and the fraction of each fluid that avoids a flow region or a group of flow regions. It is shown that for any fluid and any specified region, the local flow rate through the region is equal to the product of the net flow rate through the system and the mean number of visits to the region by a fluid element of this type. Expressions are also derived for the compositions of material at the outlet streams and at individual flow regions exits, as well as for the composition of material inside each flow region. These results may be employed to verify flow models of physical systems and to determine model parameters.

    Notes: The catalyzed direct reduction of lead sulfide with carbon and lime was investigated at several temperatures and under two different inert gas atmospheres. The catalyzed reduction kinetics were determined both with a nitrogen atmosphere and a helium-rich helium-nitrogen atmosphere. The reduction kinetics under the latter were decidedly superior to those under the former. The differences were interpreted in terms of faster diffusion rates in a helium medium and synergistic effects. The catalyst used was a ternay eutectic mixture (K, Li, Na)2CO3, which amounted to 2.5 wt. % of the PbS:4CaO:4C reaction mixture.

    Notes: The internal diffusion coefficients, Di, of pure methane, ethane and ethylene as well as some of their binary and ternary mixtures, have been calculated at 20°C for solid particles of a commercial activated carbon. It has been observed that the contribution of the surface migration mechanism to the global mass transfer process inside the adsorbent particles can be as much as 70-80%. Values for the surface migration coefficient Ds have also been calculated from the relation Di = Dg + KDs, where K is a dimensionless mean slope factor. Values found for both coefficients are of the same order of magnitude as those reported in the literature for similar systems.All the values for the internal diffusion coefficients of these pure components and their mixtures fit into a single correlation curve, the characteristic kinetic curve of the adsorbent.

    Notes: Dense phase voidage, εD, dense phase superficial gas velocity, uDo, and absolute bubble rise velocity, uB, were measured at pressures up to 8300 kPa in a pilot-scale, fluidized bed of Group A and boundary Group A/B powders. The mean equivalent bubble diameter, db, near the top of the bed was inferred from uB, and known bed operating conditions. Increased pressure at fixed superficial gas velocity, uo, increased εD and uDo and decreased db for Group A powders. The marked decrease in inferred maximum bubble size, dbmax' with increased pressure could not be explained by a decrease in gas contributing to bubble flow, uBo, but rather appeared to be the result of a bubble instability phenomenon limiting bubble growth.

    Notes: The mixing of gases and particles in confined, coaxial jets with angular secondary steam injection into suddenly expanded mixing chambers was studied. The effects of secondary stream injection angle, mixing chamber diameter and length, primary jet solids loadings, particle size, and secondary stream velocity on particle and gas mixing rates were determined. Gas mixing was much faster than particle mixing. Angular secondary injection significantly increased the initial gas and particle mixing rates but had little effect on the overall length of duct needed for complete mixing. The effects on initial gas mixing rate of combined angular secondary injection and increased secondary velocity were additive.

    Notes: Gradient theory of equilibrium fluid microstructures is extended to nonequilibrium isothermal processes. The theory is applied to steady diffusion across liquid-liquid interfaces. It is shown that local equilibrium across a fluid-fluid interface is maintained even in the presence of very high diffusion fluxes and that the concept of an interface acting as an applied potential energy for a diffusing species is of limited utility. The theory is suited for practical, semiempirical calculations of structure, stress, and isothermal transport in systems containing interfaces.

    Notes: The temperature rise at a gas-liquid interface due to heat evolution and the relevant enhancement factor for gas absorption rate are analyzed for absorption, with an instantaneous irreversible reaction and with a first-order irreversible reaction allowing for the temperature dependence of the major physicochemical properties. The analysis reveals that, unlike isothermal absorption, the film theory solutions with the replacement of any system parameters do not give a reasonable approximation to the realistic penetration theory solution, except in the case of the physical absorption regime. However, the modified Danckwerts analysis, in which the physicochemical properties are evaluated at the time-averaged interface temperature, is shown to be useful in obtaining the approximate penetration theory solutions with satisfactory accuracy.
