Description / Table of Contents: Influence of programmed welding temperature cycles on the resulting structure and the corrosion behavior of austenitic steelStudies on corrosion resistant austenitic steels subjected to simulated welding temperature cycles have shown that even after very short annealing times the corrosion resistance is decreased. In the temperature range between 700 and 900 °C carbides are precipitated, while grain growth and twinning are observed at temperatures between 900 and 1100 °C. Above 1280 °C delta-ferrite is formed as early as after 15 sec. Potentiokinetic current density/potential curves have been traced on the basis of tests in 1 N sulfuric acid at room temperature. The passivation current density has turned out to be a suitable corrosion resistance criterion.

Description / Table of Contents: Korrosionsverhalten von manganhaltigen nichtrostenden Stählen II.
Notes: The behaviour of steels with (%) 17.3 Cr, 5.3 Ni, 0.3-13.9 Mn during potentiodynamic polarization k tests is comparable to that of 18 8 CrNi steels. Sharp peaks are found in the polarization curves; they correspond to the dissolution of the iron base: This region is followed by a passive zone characterized by low and potential-independent current flow. At a certain potential, however, a steep current rise sets in. In diluted acid there is even a transpassivity zone corresponding to the dissolution of Cr and Mn. The beginning of this zone corresponds to the beginning of the steep current rise in more concentrated solution. Cyclic cathodic reduction and anodic oxidation results in a considerable reduction of the height of the peaks in the active region, while this treatment has no effect on the transpassive region. The optimum composition of a steel would be (%) 17.3 Cr, 5.3 Ni, 5.6 Mn; higher Mn contents deteriorate the corrosion behaviour.

Description / Table of Contents: High temperature chlorination of nickel and nickel chromium alloysThe authors have studied the chlorination of nickel in flowing chlorine/nitrogen atmosphere between 650 and 850 °C. In addition, they have investigated the dependence of the chlorination rate of nickel from the chlorine partial pressure, the flow rate and the specimen length. At 750 °C and PCl2 = 178 Torr, k is approximately 1.10-5 g cm-2 sec-1. Even higher chromium additions have no influence on the chlorination rate. Preoxidation results just in a transitory decrease of the chlorination rate.

Description / Table of Contents: The formation of cubic Fe3S4 during the corrosion of steelIn hydrogen sulfide saturated water Fe3S4 (Greigite) is formed cathodically, as soon as the pH changes from the basic to the acid region. The presence of this compound thus enables the conclusion to be made that the action of hydrogen sulfide on iron has taken place under acid conditions.

Description / Table of Contents: The initial froms of the corrosion products formed on steel in moist tropical climatesAs early as during the first two to three hours a thin layer of corrosion products not discernible with the naked eye is formed on the steel surface. This layer  -  which cannot be identified either by retrodiffraction of β-rays or by X-rays diffraction  -  is growing in thickness but can be visually recognized after about 20 hours only. The primary product formed is γ-FeOOH, after 16 hours some α-FeOOH is found; the formation of the former follows a parabolic kinetic law. When SO2 is present in the atmosphere in addition to moisture the corrosion rate is considerably increased and the composition of the corrosion products becomes rather complex.

Description / Table of Contents: Stress corrosion cracking of brass as a function of cold reduction and its correlation with other mechanical propertiesInvestigation into the time dependence of stress corrosion cracking of various homogeneous and heterogeneous brass qualities after previous plastic cold reduction (up to 47.4%) and under a load of 80% of the flexural strength in 0.1% HgNo3 solution. With increasing cold reduction the corrosion susceptibility is decreased, provided the cold reduction is accompanied by a homogenization of the structure. The corrosion damage exhibits a maximum at the start of the test; this first period is followed by a period characterized by a constant increase until the specimen breaks.

Description / Table of Contents: Mechanism of erosion corrosion in fast flowing liquidsThe corrosion behaviour of copper, brass and gray cast iron has been studied in 3 % air-saturated NaCl solution and seawater respectively. The tests have been carried out in an experimental setup enabling a circular Couette type flow to be formed. At low and very high rates the corrosion rate clearly depends from the flow. Above certain critical flow rates the attack is localized and erosion corrosion is found at high turbulence spots. By electrochemical methods the particular corrosion rates are determined and it is shown, that the cathodic partial corrosion reaction is rate-controlling. The origin of mechanical interaction between the medium and the metal surface, but also to processes occurring within the covering layer. Erosion corrosion consequently depends from flow conditions and surface properties and also from type and stability of the surface layers.

Description / Table of Contents: Flow dependence of the pitting of a CrNi steel in NaCl solution. Pt. I: Experiments with the rotating discThe pitting of the CrNi steel (German designation X 5 CrNi 18 9, Werkstoff Nr. 1.4301) in NaCl solution (1 and 3 N) at 25 °C has been investigated with the aid of the rotating disc, with a view to its dependence from the number of revolutions and the thickness of the diffusion layer. Potentiokinetic and potentiostatic experiments have shown, that the pitting potential for stable pitting is a function of flow in a more pronounced way than the potential for repassivating pitting corrosion. The pitting density increases as the number of revolutions increases and the thickness of the diffusion layer decreases, while the corrosion limiting current density and the average and maximum pit radii decreases in the same conditions. This goes to show that the sit locations are repassivated when exceeding a critical size which decreases with increasing number of revolutions. Contrary to the conditions prevailing in stagnant solutions where the pit density is almost independent from time, new pits are generated permanently despite repassivation under conditions of flow. Consequently, there is a apparent increase of pit density with time.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of the surface treatment of stainless steels on their chemical resistance, in particular to stress corrosion crackingThe stress corrosion resistance of austenitic stainless steels shows a pronounced dependence from the surface treatment. Grinding with a coarse material makes the surface very susceptible to this type of corrosion. The susceptible can be largely removed by subsequent picking, provided the treatment removes a layer about 3 μm in thickness. Grinding affects the structure to a depth of about 200 μm, but particular conditions appear to prevail in the above mentioned thin surface zone, so that in particular transcrystalline stress corrosion may occur. The susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking can be tested with a solution containing (%) 0.06 acetic acid, 1 acetaldehyde and 100 ppm Cl ions (as CuCl2) when the corrosion susceptibility is to be evaluated in comparative terms.Pitting corrosion by mixed acid, too, can be largely prevented by deep picking of ground material.

Description / Table of Contents: Electrochemical investigations into the corrosion behaviour of electrolytically and chemically deposited metallic coatings in chloride containing solutionsBehaviour of chemically deposited coatings (Nip-alloy, NiB-alloys), electrolytically deposited coatings (Ni, Zn, Cd, hard Cr and Cu) and  -  for the purpose of comparison  -  CrNi steel 18 8 in NaCl solutions (0.6, 2.91, 14.16 and 24.18 weight %) with NaCl concentration, oxygen concentration and temperature as variables. In aerated systems the oxygen concentration is rate controlling; in this context, characteristic differences are found, depending from the noble character of the particular metal. The temperature has little bearing on the corrosion current.

Description / Table of Contents: The electrochemical behaviour of pure lead in hot sulfuric acid at high concentrationsThe corrosion rate of pure lead in 70% deaerated sulfuric acid can be calculated for the temperature range between 21 and 165 °C using one only equation. The possibility of an extension of this equation by a concentration dependent term is made feasible by the finding, that a logarithmic dependence exists between corrosion rate and acid concentration in the concentration rate 10-80% at 80 °C. In connection with the interpretation of the current density potential curves of pure lead in hot concentrated sulfuric acid the authors discuss the possibility of lead sulfide formation.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigations into the behaviour of aluminium under cathodic polarizationCharacteristic discontinuities in the cathodic current density-potential curve (traced for high purity Al and Fe-containing Al in buffered Na-chloride solution), relations between the current density and the inflexion point of the curve and the buffer capacity of the electrolyte, as well as the heavy corrosion observed above a critical current density yield the conclusion that a cathodic rupture occurs because of the alkaline reaction of the liquid boundary layer. The cathodic reaction is thereby transferred from the oxide-solution boundary to the metal-solution boundary and the formation of hydroxide takes place not by direct hydration, but via hydroxo complexes which are precipitated at the electrode because of the pH prevailing there and then block the electrode. In the case of the Fe-containing Al there is an enrichment of Al3Fe which results in increasing hydrogen evolution at constant potential.

Description / Table of Contents: Einfluß der Oberflächen-Mikrogeometrie auf die Korrosion. II.
Notes: The problem is dealt with in terms of two models: (1) Metal surface with curved elements of the same metal protruding therefrom, these elements acting as anodes and the potential distribution being a function of the regularity of the curvature (semi-spherical, semi-ellipsoidal); (2) this model corresponds e. g. to the surface state produced by grinding: alternating cylindrical elevations and depressions, the first acting as anodes, the last as cathodes. In this case a two-dimensional potential and current density distribution must be evaluated.

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of molybdenum and degree of hardening on the corrosion properties of chromium alloyed maraging steelsThe influence of intermetallic precipitations on the corrosion resistance of maraging chromium alloyed steels with various molybdenum contents has been studied by tracing potentiokinetic and potentiostatic current density/potential curves. It has been shown that the passivation current density and the passive current density are measures of the corrosion resistance. Hardening times yielding maximum strength result in an increased dissolution current density; in this context increased molybdenum contents displace the increase of the current density toward longer times. Corrosion tests in artificial seawater distinctly show the positive influence of molybdenum which displaces the rapture potential toward more nobel values.

Description / Table of Contents: The role of alkali sulfates during the high temperature corrosionExpermental work with various nickel base materials (NiCr20 Ti Al = Nimonic 80 A, NiCr20Co18TiAl = Nimonic 90) and high alloy steels (X40CoCrNi 20 20 20 = S 590, X8 CrNiNb 16 13 = ATS, X12 CrNiWTi 16 13 = 17/13W) and pure nickel. The action of Ni3S2 results in a heavy intergranular attack, accompanied by metal growth already at 650 °C. i.e. below the melting point of nickel sulfide. Under the action the sulfate melts (Na and K sulfates) the formation of nickel sulfide depends from the oxygen content of the atmosphere: with sufficient oxygen present there is practically no sulfide. Addition of NaCl to the melt increases the aggressivity of the latter in particular at higher temperature (800 °C). and may result in the complete destruction of the metal. Scale layers which may be present have no protective effect when they are porous and thus are not able to resist the penetration of the sulfate to the metal surface. The resistance of the alloy is primarily determined by the nickel content and decreases as the nickel content is increased; with comparable Ni contents the Co contents are an important criterion because Co containing scales appear to be easily penetrated by sulfates.

Notes: Using a galvanostatic method of investigation the influence has been studied of various anions on the formation of anodic layers during anodization in borate solution. According to the results obtained sodium carbonate, phosphate, succinate and oxalate enhance the formation of the anodic oxide layer. Sulfite, sulfate, thiosulfate and nitrate lower the anode potential to a constant value which depends from the type of anion and may be extremely low in the case of halogen ions (chloride, bromide, iodide). This phenomenon is attributed in the case of the halides to a pitting type attack, while a duplex layer formation is assumed to take place with the other members of this group. The effect of the halides may be suppressed by the addition of phosphate ions, but rather high phosphate:halide ratios are required in order to achieve healing of the pits. The pores in the duplex layer may be sealed by a second anodization in borate, phosphate, benzoate or succinate solution.

Notes: Iron samples covered with a thin layer of activated carbon have been exposed to humid atmospheres at various relative humidities and with a various sulfur dioxide contents. Contrary to expectation the corrosion is initially faster at 55 and 65% relative humidity that at higher humidities. This phenomenon is attributed to adsorption of water vapour on activated charcoal, so that liquid films giving rise to corrosion can be formed at an earlier stage. After extended exposure, however, no accelerating effect can be attributed to the carbon particles.

Description / Table of Contents: Stress corrosion cracking of alpha-brass as a function of the annealing temperature, and its connection with other parameters II.The author has studied the stress corrosion susceptibility as a function of the annealing temperature at constant load and constant specimen deformation in 0.1% mercuric nitrate solution. The original state of the metals investigated  -  brass with 42, 28 and 20% Zn  -  was 52.3% cold rolled. Optimum resistance is found with relatively stable structures (relaxation at 280 °C, primary recrystalization at about 380 °C and secondary recrystallization above about 755 °C.) Instable pre-stage of such structures exhibit minimum useful life. The most suitable thermal treatment must be read from the time to failure curves which  -  because of intermediary strengthening and its reversal  -  frequently exhibit two minima.

Description / Table of Contents: Heat resistance of welds in ferritic chromium steelsWith a view to the suitability of steels for use at temperatures up to 1000 °C various alloyed steels have been investigated. The results yield the conclusion that the following maximum working temperatures can be considered: 13% Cr steel 800 °C; 13% Cr steel with 2% Si an 0.8% Al 900 °C; 24% Cr steel with Si 1000 °C. The filler material can be an identical alloy having about the same Cr content. In the case of the high chromium steel a filler material containing 16% Cr and 36% Ni can be used as well, because the resulting weld has more suitable thermal dilatation properties. As to the after treatment of the weld seam it is indispensable to keep to a certain set of conditions, in particular during cooling, in order to prevent undesirable structural transformations.

Description / Table of Contents: Flow dependence of the pitting corrosion of CrNi steel in NaCl solutionTest (with CrNi steel 19 9 in 1 N NaCl) with supersonic agitation have confirmed the results obtained with the rotating disc electrode. Supersonic treatment increases the pitting potential for stable pitting and reduces maximum corrosion current density. The treatment has but little effect, however, on the pitting potential for repassivating pitting corrosion. Cycling tests under galvanostatic conditions show that the effect supersonic action comes to bear almost immediately. Switching on or off the supersonic source results in immediate repassivation or loss thereof. Similar to experiments on rotating discs the pits are very small and, consequently, constitute practically no corrosion risk.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigation into the hot steam corrosion of welded Incoloy 800 plateIn the weld seam of Incoloy the attack produced by hot steam (620 °C, 1000 h) is considerably increased. The reason thereof is the coarse grain structure formed during the solidification of the metal, because this transformation reduces the number of active lattice defects and thus inhibits the diffusion of the corrosion-preventing chromium. The favourable effect of cold working on corrosion resistance may, on the other hand, been explained in terms of an increased lattice defect density. The corrosion found during the hot steam experiments, however, need not be deemed dangerous because a strongly adherent scale layer is formed which does not give rise to selective penetration.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion of galvanized ferrous materials by natural watersLaboratory and field test with galvanized irons do not reveal clear interrelations between water quality and corrosion. Likewise it is not possible on the basis of potential measurements to make any statement with respect to the formation of protective layers. It is for this reason that some doubt may be expressed as to the applicability of the test method according to DIN 50 930, the more so as the formation of ZnCO3 could be shown to take place in some few cases only.

Description / Table of Contents: Protection of refractory metals and graphit against oxidation and hight temperature corrosion up to 1500 °C by sintered MoSi2 coatingsMoSi2 coatings applied by plasma spraying or isostatic hot pressing protect Ta and Nb against oxidation by forming a glassy coating of SiO2. Diffusion of Si to the bulk metal is slow because of the low mobility of Si in the intermediate layers of Me5Si3 which contain Nb and Ta; the oxidation rate depends from the slow oxygen permeation through the glass layer. A 200 μm silicide layer on Ta would, accordingly, provide some thousand hours' protection at 1500 °C. Silicide coatings on graphite, however, must be protected against carburization by applying a diffusion barrier; investigated for this purpose. The useful life data calculated on the basis of the diffusion data have been registered during oxidation tests too: silicide coated Ta and Nb withstood oxidation by air at 1500 °C for 1000 hrs, and at 1200 °C for 4000 hrs; carbon with an intermediate TiC layer resisted oxidation at 1500 °C for 400 hrs. Under temperature cycling conditions it is indispensable to adjust the coefficient of dilatation of the glassy coating to that of the base material by adding GeO2.

Description / Table of Contents: Causes of the corrosion of valve stems by asbestos soft packings and preventive measuresThis type of corrosion can largely be eliminated by removing soluble matter from asbestos. Contrary to expectation the chloride content seems to be of little importance while alkali and alkaline earth ions appear to be responsible of corrosion processes. These experience have to be borne in mind when selecting appropriate materials combinations. It may be indispensable to choose valve stems made of corrosion resistant steel or to impregnate the packing with PTFE in order to eliminate any direct contact between asbestos and metal.

Description / Table of Contents: Korrosionsverhalten nichtrostender manganhaltiger Stähle  -  III LochfraßempfindlichkeitDie Lochfraßanfälligkeit nichtrostender Stähle mit (%) 17,39 Cr, 5,3 Ni, 0,3-13,9 Mn in Chloridlösungen wurde mittels einer potentiodynamischen zyklischen Polarisationstechnik in Lösungen mit 0,1 n Schwefelsäure + 0,9 n Natriumsulfat + verschiedene Mengen Natriumchlorid untersucht.
Notes: The pitting susceptibility of stainless steels with (%) 17.39 Cr, 5.3 Ni, 0.3-13.9 Mn in chloride solutions have been studied by a potentiodynamic cyclic polarization technique in solutions 0.1 N H2SO4 + 0.9 N Na2So4 + various amounts of NaCl. At low NaCl concentrations no pronounced influence of the chloride can be found and even at medium concentrations the passivation behaviour is generally maintained; in this region, however, there is an increase of dissolution and passivation current densities. High chloride concentrations, however, result in pitting which may be completely suppressed by a cyclic (anodic/cathodic) polarization technique. As to pitting resistance an alloy containing (%) 17.3 Cr, 5.3 Ni, 5.6 Mn is comparable to the steel CrNi 18 9.

Description / Table of Contents: Tinplate corrosion in nitrate containing media: The role fo nitriteThe role of nitrite in the corrosion of tinplate in media containing nitrate was examined. If nitrite is initially absent, the corrosion is initially slow, but as nitrite is generated the corrosion, in turn, accelerates. This slow startup does not occur if nitrite is initially present in sufficient concentration. These observations agree with the autocatalytic mechanisms suggested for the reduction of nitrate by Schmid and Vetter.
