The Lengths of Molecules in Inclusion Channels of Urea and ThioureaThe lengths of guest molecules in urea inclusion channels have been determined by X-ray measurements for homologous series of 35 groups of the following compounds: various types of hydrocarbons, secondary alcohols and chlorides, ketones, ethers, thioethers, esters, carboxylic and dicarboxylic acids and their esters (table 1). As a rule, the channel length occupied by a molecule is a linear function of the number of C atoms in the chain. Increments for C—C bonds, C—O bonds and C—S bonds are calculated and values for possible intramolecular spacing between guest molecules are given (table 2). In normal hydrocarbons and in some of their derivatives, the C—C increment was found to be identical to that expected for a stretched chain in crystalline paraffins. In all other cases the chains of guest molecules in channels are somewhat shorter and this is explained by helical conformation of the molecules (figures 1, 2). Formulae are given for the changes in length and diameter of regular helices of CH2-chains as a function of the degree of coiling. - Esters of odd-numbered alcohols, in particular of methanol, occupy more channel length than do their isomeric esters derived from even-numbered alcohols, e. g. ethanol (fig. 3). The energy content of the more densely packed inclusion crystals (ethyl and n-butyl esters, e. g. ethyl hexanoate) is lower than that of the less densely packed crystals (methyl and propyl esters, e. g. methyl heptanoate). - The channel length occupied by dicarboxylic acids from octanedioic acid to heptadecanedioic acid, is not exactly proportional to the number of C atoms. These molecules are anchored at distinct locations, of the channel which results in simple whole-number molecular ratios of host to guest instead of statistical ratios expected from chain length. From heptadecanedioic acid on, the ratios are proportional to the chain length as usual. All dicarboxylic acids up to at least tetradecanedioic acid are capable of forming adducts with urea in ratios 1 : 1 or 1 : 2 instead of or besides the normal hexagonal inclusion compounds. - n-Hydrocarbons (C9—C14) and cyclohexylalkanes are much shorter in the thiourea channel than in the urea channel. - 1,3-Diglycerides occupy channel lengths which correspond to those expected for the molecules in approximately stretched conformation.
Notes:
