    Notes: Measurements of the effective self-diffusion coefficients for carbon dioxide and methane were performed in the transition pressure range. The experiments utilized carbon-14 tagged gases and semiconductor radiation detectors in a transient type of experiment. A detailed analysis of the errors associated with the experiments indicated that the accuracy of the measurements was near 5%. The results verify that the additive resistance law is valid for the representation in the transition range. The unknown effects of surface diffusion make the values to be employed in this law subject to review. As an example one surface diffusion model is considered.

    Notes: Phase equilibria data are presented for the helium-carbon dioxide system at 253°, 273°, and 293°K. and pressures to 139 atm. Equilibrium is established under flow followed by nonflow conditions, and liquid and vapor samples are isolated without disturbing equilibrium. Liquid-and vapor-phase compositions are monitored with miniaturized capacitors, and compressibility factors are computed from resulting dielectric constants. The data are internally consistent and compare favorably with available literature values.

    Notes: Exact solutions of the boundary layer equations were used to calculate the local mass transfer coefficients for an impinging jet with a parabolic velocity distribution. Boundary conditions were obtained from an inviscid flow solution and also from experimental pressure distributions. Experimental data for the air/naphthalene system were in good agreement with theoretical results. Mass transfer from the impingement surface was independent of nozzle height in the range 0.5 to 12 nozzle radii. For lower nozzle heights the effect of the constriction of flow between the nozzle and the surface led to increased transfer rates near the nozzle wall; data followed the predicted behavior.

    Notes: Tray efficiencies were measured for desorbing ammonia from water by air in a small sieve-tray column operated in the cycling mode, that is, with alternate flow of vapor and liquid. The actual efficiency improvement obtained was compared with that theoretically possible assuming the liquid flows without mixing when dropped. A mixing model was proposed and the mixing parameter evaluated from the experimental data.

    Notes: A hemispherical bubble, attached to a plate, is surrounded by an initially quiescent and isothermal liquid. By suddenly heating the plate, a thermal gradient over the bubble surface results. Because surface tension is temperature dependent, tangential stresses arise at the bubble surface. The liquid is viscous, and motion in the liquid phase begins. Such motion is an example of thermocapillary flow. This problem, besides being of interest from a fundamental point of view, is of possible concern in the design of space vehicles capable of storing cryogenic fluids for long periods of time in a weightless condition.Solutions to the problem are developed by numerical treatment of the governing equations. Flow and temperature fields, which depend upon the Prandtl and Marangoni numbers, were obtained for Prandtl numbers 1 and 5 and Marangoni numbers from 0 to 100,000.Results show that liquid is pulled toward the intersection of the bubble and the plate, then flows around the bubble surface, and leaves the bubble as a jet. The extent of the jet increases with increasing Marangoni number and decreases with increasing Prandtl number.Thermocapillary flow increases heat transfer (Nusselt number) over that obtained from conduction, but the increase is modest. The Nusselt number increases with the Marangoni number and is insensitive to the Prandtl number. At a Marangoni number of 40,000, the local Nusselt number was increased by a factor of 2. In order for thermocapillary flow to become a dominant heat transfer mechanism, the Marangoni number must exceed 100,000.

    Notes: From studies of turbulence in round jets of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, it has been found that the response of wedge shaped, hot-film probes can be influenced by the structure of the flow. In water and in weakly viscoelastic fluids the probe is little affected by turbulence, but for more highly viscoelastic fluids the rate of heat transfer from the hot film is markedly increased. Increases as great as 37% were found in this work; this corresponds to a 250% increase in apparent velocity. For this reason, care must be taken in interpreting measurements obtained with hot-film wedges (and probably cylinders and cones also) in flows with both laminar and turbulent regimes.

    Notes: The effect of various soluble and insoluble surface active agents on the absorption of ammonia into a static aqueous system was studied. Saturated straight-chain hydrocarbons with four to twenty-two carbon atoms and polar end groups were selected as the surface active agents to be studied. Alcohol, amine, and amide end groups were investigated. Most of the insoluble surface active agents, which were studied as films, were found to decrease the ammonia absorption rate. There was a definite correlation between the amount of mass transfer reduction and the hydrocarbon chain length, while the effect of the various end groups appeared to depend on the chain length. Surface mass transfer coefficients were computed for each surface active agent that retarded mass transfer. Most of the soluble surface active agents were found to increase the ammonia absorption rates. For all cases of enhanced mass transfer, movements in the interface could be observed. It was concluded that the interfacial movements were caused by the Marangoni effect. In general, as the chain length of the surface active agent decreased, the mass transfer enhancement increased. A mathematical model based on a surface renewal theory was fitted to the experimental data.

    Notes: The laminar boundary-layer equations are solved asymptotically for simultaneous mass and energy transfer in a variable property binary gas mixture when one component is rapidly transferred toward the surface. Flow is past a surface of arbitrary geometry, and both forced and free convection are studied. Advantage is taken of a mole fraction formulation of the boundary-layer equations, which considerably simplifies the final results. General results are obtained for energy and mass transfer rates when physical properties are arbitrary functions of both temperature and composition. By considering two sets of property variations, representing extremes between which many actual variations lie, it is shown that in many forced convection problems the rates of energy and mass transfer can be expressed in a particularly simple form. The results also show that property variations are generally more important for free convection than for forced convection.

    Notes: This paper presents a new, general method for mathematical simulation of equilibrium stage operations. The procedure solves component material balance equations with a tridiagonal matrix algorithm. Heat balances and summation equations are handled with Broyden's method. The unique feature of this procedure is that, in a mathematical sense, all equations are solved simultaneously. Therefore, the method can be used for all types of equilibrium stage processes. Additionally, the use of Broyden iteration insures solutions which are both stable and more rapid than current techniques. An exact solution for a twenty tray column with twenty components takes approximately 30 sec. on an IBM 360/65 computer. Successful simulations have been made for both absorption and distillation type of operations which have included complex columns with multiple feeds and side product streams. Design applications of the method cover a variety of equilibrium stage processes in the chemical and petroleum industries.

    Notes: Combined reactors in which the mixed reactor is followed by a tubular reactor can be optimal for a large number of simple adiabatic exothermal reactions. In the present paper, optimality criteria defined earlier for simple reactions involving a single reactant species have been extended to reactions involving two reactant species and for a system of consecutive reactions.The oxidation of benzone has been studied in an adiabatic semifluidized mixed tubular (MT) reactor. A definite improvement is possible when the oxidation is carried out in this reactor, as observed by a comparison of the experimental results obtained in tubular, mixed, and MT reactors under adiabatic conditions.

    Notes: The relationship between μ*ξ and TR for nonpolar gases at normal pressures is used to predict the viscosity for their mixtures. For such mixtures, pseudocritical temperatures are used to obtain TR. To establish ξm for a mixture, a binary interaction model has been applied that utilizes composition and the ξ values of the pure components.Viscosities have been calculated for twenty binary systems which include helium and hydrogen. These calculated values produce an average deviation of 1.97% for 148 compositions. This method was also applied to the helium-neon-argon ternary system at 100°C. to obtain for four mixtures examined an average deviation of 2.2%.

    Notes: Several studies have been made in Couette systems of the primary motion (angular translation and rotation) of spheres suspended in viscous liquids. Radial migration trajectories, however, have been unreported for single spheres.In this study, a prediction of radial migration is developed and compared with experimental measurements. The predicted trajectories were found to agree well with the measured ones.Ultimately, radially migrating spheres reached an equilibrium position located approximately midway between the cylinder walls. The model developed predicted an equilibrium position just slightly inside the midpoint, while measured equilibrium positions fell between the midpoint and 0.4, the annular thickness from the inner cylinder walls. The differences in equilibrium positions are attributed to the approximate nature of the model.

    Notes: The oxidation of carbon monoxide with Hopcalite catalyst was studied in an isothermal recycling reactor with special attention paid to the changes of gas phase compositions with time.Conversion-time data exhibit significant departures from first-order behavior often ascribed to this reaction. In early stages the reaction rate declines more rapidly than would a first-order reaction; later the reverse is true. A mechanism, based on careful analyses of the literature and of our observations, is proposed. A kinetic model based on this mechanism is shown to reproduce the data of any run satisfactorily, but there is a considerable variation in values of the constants from run to run.

    Notes: The light intensity distribution in a perfectly mixed photoreactor has been studied experimentally and analytically. Experimental measurements of intensities within the reactor were made with a specially designed light probe. These data were then used to test the validity of a model which treats the ultraviolet lamp as a linear source radiating in all directions. It was found that this model, which seems appropriate and allows reasonable computations, is somewhat in error owing to the neglect of the finite size of the lamp and the existence of reflection and refraction effects within the reactor. An empirical correction function was determined for use with the model which then yields predictions in close agreement with experimental data when the reactor is filled with a light absorbing liquid.

    Notes: Liquid-phase Peclet numbers have been measured for 1/4 in. Raschig rings with countercurrent air flow in a 2 in I.D. column. The response curve has been analyzed by a computer program, since the output data was collected directly on paper tape. The Peclet number calculated from a moments analysis is considered unreliable, and the diffusion model can be rejected for the liquid phase. If the Peclet number is calculated by a least-squares fit, and if the result is forced through the peak in the response curve, then a correlation for over one hundred runs with gas flows from 0 to 99% of flooding is given by Equations (7) and (8).

    Notes: Facilitated transport is a process in which permeation through a liquid film is chemically augmented. Because of the scientific and engineering interest in this phenomenon, the purpose of this work was to carry out a detailed mathematical and experimental investigation of facilitated transport. The differential equations describing facilitated transport are presented, and a generally applicable numerical solution recently developed by G. M. Roe for this type of boundary value problem is summarized. The experimental investigation consisted of measuring the steady state rate of transport of nitric oxide through thin films of ferrous chloride solution and of determining independently the values of the system parameters of which the nitric oxide flux was a function. The experimental results were accurately predicted by using the model developed by Roe. This is the first demonstration of a general quantitative understanding of facilitated transport.

    Notes: A one-dimensional column is considered in which a number of chemical reactions with arbitrary kinetics may take place among an arbitrary number of components. Initially, the column is in complete chemical and physical equilibrium. A localized small perturbation is introduced in the column at time t = 0. It is shown that, in general, this initial perturbation separates into a definite number of peaks which move with different velocities. Each peak broadens according to an asymptotic relation, depending on a characteristic dispersion coefficient. If n is the number of components, m the number of independent reactions, and σ the number of equations of state to be considered, there are n-m-σ peaks. These peaks do not correspond to single substances as in classical chromatography, but each peak has an eigencomposition. The velocities of the peaks are derived as functions of stoichiometry and equilibrium data. The dispersion coefficients depend, in addition, on the kinetics of the chemical reactions and on the rate of mass transfer. Thus, perturbation chromatography offers a means of determining both equilibrium and rate data. The theory is illustrated by means of two examples.

    Notes: A flow visualization study was made with an optically birefringent solution of milling yellow dye in water flowing through a transparent duct of isoceles triangular cross section. The present data confirm a number of theoretical predictions concerning transitional phenomena in triangular ducts. One of the most interesting of these phenomena is the existence of a region of simultaneous laminar and turbulent flow in the duct. The present results, which agree with the theory, indicate an order of laminar and turbulent flow which is inverse to previous observations made with smoke filament tracings.

    Notes: Experimental gas absorption studies for bubbles transported in turbulent pipe flow of water strongly indicate that liquid phase controlled mass transfer is due to surface renewal by turbulent eddies. Predictions of transport behavior from the conditions of turbulent flow cannot be made in support of this mechanism because no satisfactory theory of turbulent transport near a gas-liquid interface is available. This work considers a model of the hydrodynamic behavior near the surface which provides a link between the observed mass transfer behavior and the state of the turbulent field.In this model, the very small scales of turbulent motion are considered to be controlling. These motions are idealized, and their flow and mass transfer behavior are solved analytically. The overall result for eddies of various sizes is related to the turbulent energy spectrum by using only the easily accessible parameter ∊, the energy dissipation rate. This model gives quantitative agreement to within a factor of 2 for three widely different experimental situations including gas-liquid and liquid-solid interfaces. However, the predicted Reynolds number dependence is somewhat higher than the experimental result.The model attempts to clearly define the basic physical process at the interface. Therefore, it indicates the direction for further experimentation needed to clarify the basic relationship between the mass transfer rates in the liquid phase and the hydrodynamic behavior of the turbulent liquid.

    Notes: An experimental study of the photochlorination of propane was undertaken to assess the significance of heterogeneous termination steps (wall reactions). Data were obtained in 2- and 10-mm. I.D. tubular flow reactors with varying oxygen concentrations. The results indicated that homogeneous terminations were dominant in the large reactor, and heterogeneous ones were dominant in the small unit. A kinetic scheme which explained the data was proposed. It included two parallel termination steps: a second-order homogeneous reaction between C3H7. and oxygen and a first-order heterogeneous reaction between C3H7. and the reactor wall.Even though the data were taken in the laminar flow regime, the rate of reaction was a function of Reynolds number for the 10-mm. reactor. Kinetic factors may explain these results, but the reasons are not clear. More research in this area is needed.Data taken in the 10-mm. reactor packed with quartz cylinders gave results similar to those for the 2-mm. reactor. This provided confirming evidence for the proposed scheme of parallel, heterogeneous and homogeneous termination steps.

    Notes: The flow of brine through the ice bed in gravitational counterwashers is investigated by analytical methods. Two types of counterwashers are considered: a drained-top counterwasher and a flooded one. Only counterwashers of rectangular cross section and two dimensional flows are investigated. By assuming that the ice crystals move vertically upwards with a uniform velocity and that the relative flow of brine and wash water with respect to the ice bed obeys Darcy's law, the differential equations and the boundary conditions of the flow are derived. The solutions are obtained by using complex variables and conformal mapping. The solutions are presented as formulae, which make possible the rational design of counterwashers and the optimization of their dimensions and operation parameters.

    Notes: As a step toward a unified treatment of particulately fluidized beds, a statistical-thermodynamic approach has been investigated, with the smoothed potential cell theory of pure liquids used to establish an equation of state and a collisional-viscosity relation. This treatment has correlated well with experimental data on liquid-fluidized beds, and the same method gives reasonable predictions for gas-fluidized beds. A parameter equivalent to thermodynamic temperature has been identified for fluidized beds, which depends solely upon fluid properties and includes the three-halves power of superficial velocity. This approach should be of value for interpreting other liquidlike properties of fluidized systems.

    Notes: The differential equation for diffusion of a solute in a quasi-homogeneous, spherical, ion exchange particle, previously solved for time-dependent boundary conditions, is applied to an activated carbon adsorption system. This solution differs from the infinite volume solution which assumes constant boundary conditions. The result is applied to experimental data and yields effective adsorbent-phase diffusion coefficients. Equilibrium and rate studies were performed by using the aqueous phenol solution - activated carbon system. The rigorous solution to the diffusion equation is compared with a recently published frequency domain solution. Excellent agreement is obtained for values of the effective diffusion coefficient computed from the two rate equations.It is recommended that the rigorous model be used for mechanism and diffusion coefficient determination. After the mass transfer parameters have been obtained, the simplified rate equation may be used for either lumped parameter or distributed parameter models for prediction of fixed-bed adsorber response. Further studies are required to determine if the simplified model adequately describes fixed-bed behavior.

    Notes: It is shown that existing methods for design of optimal regulators by the Wiener-Hopf procedure must be modified in order to be applicable to unstable and/or nonminimum phase plant or disturbance transfer functions, such as are frequently encountered in the chemical industry. Solutions are developed for three cases: I. stable, but possibly nonminimum phase, plant and disturbance transfer functions; II. minimum phase, but possibly unstable, plant with no restrictions on the disturbance transfer functions; and III. prestabilized, with a proper modification to retain the original control effort inequality constraints, but possibly nonminimum phase plant and disturbance transfer functions. Case III gives the general solution for regulation of linear, time-invariant, lumped-parameter systems. When prestabilization is not necessary, it reduces to case I. Where applicable, solutions by the method of case II frequently involve less algebra than in case III.

    Notes: An experimental study was made on the breakup of a single drop in two phase liquid-liquid developing turbulent pipe flow. The predominant breakup mechanism was controlled by dynamic pressure forces, and the drop breakup was characterized by one or two smaller drops breaking off a larger drop.The effect on the increase in interfacial area and the resulting size distribution of the fragmented drops of drop velocity, interfacial tension, initial drop size, and the distance down the pipe was studied. Regression analysis was used to determine the significant effects. Most of these regression equations had significant cubic and two-factor interactions, which is indicative of the complexity of drop breakup.The size distribution of the fragmented drops can be approximated by a normal distribution. However, the steady state distribution was not fully developed in the work here.

By using carbon tetrachloride and carbon disulphide as suspendign media, transmission measurements were made with collimated and diffuse sources for wavelengths from 2 to 11μ. By employing a two-flux diffuse model, the data were correlated to obtain absorption and back-scattering cross sections. From the diffuse and collimated data, a backscattering coefficient was found which varied linearly with relative refractive index. With the developed coefficients, the absorptivities of the cloud of particles were determined.

    Notes: The laminar, isothermal entrance region flow of the Bingham fluid in a circular pipe is studied at first by using the momentum integral method and the boundary-layer equation for the Bingham fluid. In addition to the velocity boundary layer, the existence of the shear stress boundary layer is considered. The solution is valid only near the entry because of limitation of the boundary-layer model. The Campbell-Slattery method originally devised for the Newtonian fluid is also used to analyze the Bingham entrance region flow. The results are compared with those obtained through the use of the momentum integral method and those obtained through the use of the variational method by other investigators. While the results obtained in this work appear to be generally reasonable and valid, the results by the other investigators have been found to be somewhat erroneous.

In addition, the separation of mixtues of ethane and propane by permeation was studied.Both hydrocarbon vapors' permeation exhibited pressure dependence, with propane showing the greatest variation over the same range.In the case of the mixture separation study, the achieved degree of separation was lower than would be predicted on the basis of the pure component permeation constants. Moreover, the total flow of vapor through the film was greater than would be expected on the basis of the individual gas flows. This was attributed to an anomalous diffusion phenomenon of ethane in the presence of dissolved propane due to a plasticization of the polymer network.

    Notes: An adiabatic loop reactor was operated at naturally unstable steady states in experiments employing the reaction between sodium thiosulfate and hydrogen peroxide in aqueous solution. The unstable states, the intermediate states in a multiple state regime, were stabilized by manual manipulation of the recycle ratio. Resulting temperature data agreed well with those predicted from a plug-flow model. Observations of the transient response to small disturbances from the intermediate states verified that they were indeed unstable as had previously been predicted theoretically. Cursory attempts to stabilize the system by means of automatic feedback control employing a three-mode controller were unsuccessful.

    Notes: A method was developed for estimating the age density of transporting elements at a transport surface by using the spectral density of the total element counts. Only total counts, and not individual element histories, need be observed. The method was compared with autocorrelation methods used in an earlier work. Residence times were measured for several sizes of particles at a paticular wall surface of a stirred fluidized bed and at various gas velocities using both spectral density and autocorrelation methods. A dimensionless plot brought all data points near a single curve, valid only for this surface in this bed. Checks of these residence times against values obtained by direct observation of individual particles confirmed the methods.

    Notes: A method of calculating the critical properties of binary hydrocarbon systems is presented which is based upon the rigorous thermodynamic equations for the critical point of a binary mixture. By using these equations together with an equation of state, a completely analytical procedure was developed with the aid of a digital computer. The Redlich-Kwong and the Dieterici equations of state were chosen for study. The Redlich-Kwong equation was found superior for predicting critical pressures and temperatures by this method, although the Dieterici equation was better for critical volumes. The two interaction parameters arising from the equation of state were calculated from combining rules or from available experimental critical data on binary systems. To facilitate the latter approach, a mathematical optimization routine was used to find the best values of the interaction parameters for twenty-one binary hydrocarbon systems for which critical data were experimentally determined. The optimum values of the interaction parameters were correlated as functions of the ratio of molecular weights of the components. These correlations enable one to predict quite precisely the critical properties of the binary systems from the pure component data alone.

    Notes: The heat and mass transfer processes in a binary mixture flowing in a parallel plate channel with mass addition at the bounding surfaces are investigated analytically. The rate of mass addition, the temperature, and the mass fraction are arbitrarily prescribed at each of the bounding walls. Similarity solutions are evaluated numerically to yield pressure gradient, Nusselt number, and Sherwood number results for a wide range of each of three governing parameters. It is found that increasingly strong surface mass addition markedly increases the magnitude of the axial pressure gradient. Mass addition decreases the Nusselt and Sherwood numbers at the channel wall at which the injection is strongest but may actually increase these moduli at the opposite wall. A generalizing analysis is performed to accommodate phase change processes as well as to accommodate the specification of plenum conditions rather than wall surface conditions. Application is made to the evaporation of liquid water by an air stream. It is shown that the rate of evaporation is augmented as the rate of air injection increases, but the extent of the augmentation is less than the causative increase in the air flow rate.

    Notes: A study of the feasibility of using ion exchange resin systems for carbon dioxide absorption from gas streams was completed with the conclusion that such a system could compete very successfully with atmospheric control systems now in use. A detailed study of such a system based on polyethylenimine showed that this material is superior to any of the commercially available weak base resins tested. The kinetic data obtained correlated very well when a model was postulated that was based on diffusive transfer through a gas film, a water film, and the resin particle in series, with diffusion with the resin particle as the rate determining step.

    Notes: The process of column crystallization at total reflux and steady state was analyzed mathematically and experimentally in order to determine the mechanisms by which separations are achieved and limited. The results of the study indicate that separation is produced by the formation of crystals in the freezing section and by interphase mass-transfer in the adjacent purification section. The separation is mainly limited by axial eddy diffusion in the liquid phase.Data from three binary chemical systems were used in the study. The first system, m-chloronitrobenzene-m-bromonitrobenzene, forms a solid solution with a small phase separation (less than 6 wt. %) and was the primary subject of this study. The second system, azobenzenestilbene, forms a solid solution with a phase separation which exceeds 20 wt. %. The third system, benzene-cyclohexane, has essentially no solid solubility in the range of compositions for which data on separation have been reported (½ to 3 wt. % cyclohexane).Four mathematical models of column crystallization were developed and compared with experimental data. These models were based on different sets of assumptions as to the mechanisms which control the overall separation. The model which is consistent with experimental data was used to evaluate mass transfer coefficients and effective liquid-phase diffusivities. Diffusivities varied between 1.3 and 4.6 sq. cm./sec., and mass transfer coefficients varied between 0.07 and 0.64 cm./sec. in reasonable agreement with results obtained in studies of liquid-liquid extraction in pulsed columns.

The effectiveness factors derived from these experiments have been used to estimate the tortuosity of the pellets; it is found to agree qualitatively with the value measured from experiments on pure diffusion in a catalyst pellet.

    Notes: A study was made of spray quenching by high velocity gas atomization. A mathematical model of both high and low temperature spray quenching was developed. Data were taken for proving and validity of the model.Experiments were performed on a vertical downward flow of air-water in a 1.0 in. diameter tube. Injection was by either of two modes. The first was a set of six peripheral liquid jets projecting water perpendicularly into the high velocity airstream. The second mode of liquid injection was by means of a 360° peripheral, annular slot, which laid down a continuous wall film at the point of injection. Air velocities of 430 and 200 ft./sec. and liquid injection rates of from 150 to 1,200 ml./min. were studied. The following physical quantities were measured: liquid fluxes, wall film flow rates, drop size distributions, and median drop size. An attempt was made to measure gas temperature in a dense spray by using two different types of temperature probes, but only liquid temperatures could be detected. A comparison of data with published data and correlations was made.The best quenching conditions obtained were a liquid-to-gas mass ratio of 0.25, a Sauter mean drop diameter of 45 μ, and an indicated characteristic quench time of 10-3 sec.

    Notes: Microconductivity probes were used for the measurement of point values of mean concentrations and root-mean-square concentration fluctuations for mixing of salt solutions in turbulent shear flows. Mixing studies covered a range of flow conditions, with Reynolds numbers on the order of 104, and included ducted turbulent jets, dispersion in turbulent pipe flow, a plane mixing zone, and several multiple injection systems. The test sections all had characteristic dimensions of about 2 cm. The results for mixing experiments are compared with available previous work. Lack of resolution for root-mean-square concentration fluctuations in some previous work is indicated.Reaction product concentrations for a rapid, second-order, irreversible reaction in multiple injection systems, the plane jet, and the mixing zone were also obtained. The relation between conversion in reaction experiments and fluctuation level and decay in the equivalent mixing experiments is illustrated.

Most of the data were taken in the multimolecular region of the nitrogen-silica gel adsorption isotherm. Vapor-phase and adsorbed-phase contributions to the total transport were separated. Vapor-phase transport increased with temperature and was most dominant at relative pressures of 0.4 to 0.6. Adsorbed-phase diffusivities were of the order of 10-2  -  10-3 sq. cm./sec. and showed some dependence on the amount adsorbed at surface coverages greater than 1.5 molecular layers.

    Notes: A theoretical and experimental investigation of the separation achieved in a column crystallizer which utilizes a spiral conveyor was conducted to determine the effect of variables associated with continuous flow operation. A system that exhibits negligible solid solubility was used. Several feed mixtures containing less than 31,000 p.p.m. weight cyclohexane in benzene were employed. The principal variables evaluated in this study in a column of constant length were the feed position, internal crystal rate, and flow rates of terminal streams. A mathematical model is developed which considers axial dispersion and mass transfer between the liquid adhering to the crystals and the bulk liquid. The model satisfactorily explains the effect of the variables associated with continuous flow operation and shows that axial dispersion is more dominant in continuous flow than in total reflux operation. It is shown that multiple pass or cascade operation is necessary to produce material of purity higher than a critical level which is related to the feed composition. This occurs because of impurities in the crystal phase which are likely caused by volumetric inclusions.

    Notes: Drop-size distributions in turbulently flowing dispersion of immiscible liquids were investigated. The observed drop-size distributions were actually a composite of two superimposed distributions. One is the distribution produced by the injection nozzle and the other is that produced by breakup in the turbulent flow field. A mathematical model was developed which predicted both the shape of the observed distributions and kinetics of the droplet breakup process for the distribution produced by the turbulent flow field.The flowing dispersion composed of water and insoluble organic phase was photographed at 27, 209, 421, and 576 pipe diameters below the mixing jet and at distances of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.4 diam. from the wall. Average flow rates varied from 14 to 20 ft./sec. in the 0.750-in. I.D. tube. Three organic phases were studied at concentrations ranging from 0.6 to 10% by volume. Dispersed phase viscosity and interfacial tension varied from 1 to 18 cp. and 13 to 40 dynes/cm.No distribution law with any theoretical basis could be found which correlated experimental distributions.The stochastic model describing the breakup process postulates that each breakup event leads to two daughter drops with uniformly distributed volume ratios and a very small satellite droplet. An empirical correlation exists to predict only one of the three parameters of the model.

    Notes: The laminar flow of dilute aqueous polymer solutions was studied in the entrance region of a cylindrical tube. In laminar, fully developed, steady tube flow, elastic and inelastic fluids were indistinguishable. Viscoelastic fluids exhibited much higher entrance pressure losses than did inelastic fluids with comparable viscous properties. A method has been developed for separating the elastic portion of the overall entrance loss and shows that in some cases the elastic contribution represents as much as 80% of the total. An analysis is also presented which allows calculation of the elastic entrance loss in terms of a Hookean shear modulus.

    Notes: A modified Redlich-Kwong equation of state is developed in which the two parameters are expressed as functions of temperature. The critical values for the two constants in the equation are completely determined by the values of the critical properties of the gas. The optimum values of the constants for each isotherm (Z vs. P) are found, followed by a curve-fitting routine that obtains the constants as functions of temperature. The resulting equation of state predicts experimental helium compressibility data to within an average of 0.90% absolute error for data in the range 0 〈 pressure ≤ 700 atm., 5.26°K. ≤ temperature ≤ 1,500°K. For hydrogen, the prediction is to within an average of 0.79% absolute error for temperatures from 34° to 600°K. and pressures up to 2,900 atm.

    Notes: Free convection between two vertical coaxial cylinders was studied by solving the governing transport equations as an initial-value problem. The coupled, nonlinear, partial differential equations were converted into a set of difference equations by use of an alternating-direction implicit finite-difference numerical scheme. Twenty-four different combinations of Prandtl and Grashof numbers, and height to annular spacing ratios were used to characterize the problem. The results are presented primarily in the form of contour maps for the steady-state isotherms and streamlines.For Rayleigh numbers greater than 5 × 103, a fully developed boundary-layer flow was found to exist in the cavity. The interior region of the annulus was found to be thermally stratified and to possess a nearly uniform vertical temperature gradient, with a unicellular flow pattern being generated.With Rayleigh numbers of 5 × 104 and greater, it was found that the flow patterns could not be properly described with a grid spacing of 1/10. The variation of the steady-state mean Nusselt number with Prandtl and Rayleigh numbers and with geometric ratios was also investigated.

    Notes: The photodecomposition of aqueous solutions of formic acid was studied as a model reaction for removing organic pollutants from water. The process was carried out in a tubular-flow reactor, operated continuously. The cylindrical reactor was irradiated from the outside by placing the cylindrical lamp and the reactor at the foci of an elliptical reflector. Measurements made at differential operating conditions permitted calculation of rates of reaction as a function of formic acid concentration and light intensity for the temperature range 25° to 60°C. Carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide were the only observed products of the decomposition.The rate was first order in absorbed light intensity and between zero and first order in formic acid. These results correspond to a combination of chain and non-chain kinetics occurring simultaneously. Rate constant ratios and quantum yields were calculated from the data and the kinetics model.A few measurements were made by adding ferric chloride and ferrous chloride to the feed to the reactor. An order of magnitude increase in rate was observed with these sensitizers.

    Notes: Measurements of the total viscosity and total conductivity were made as a function of position and Reynolds number for the flow of air between two parallel plates with a separation of approximately 0.7 in. The temperature of the upper plate was 130.0°F. and that of the lower plate 70.0°F. The investigations were carried out at Reynolds numbers from 40,000 to 100,000 and were in good agreement with earlier data obtained at Reynolds numbers up to 40,000. The results obtained indicate little change in the total Prandtl number with increasing Reynolds number from the value of the molecular Prandtl number.

    Notes: This report describes a simple and reliable method of constructing small platinum film thermometers on Pyrex glass. The thermometers were used to measure surface temperature during nucleate boiling of water at pressures between 1 and 4 lb./sq.in. abs. The thermometers showed that as superheated microlayers of water evaporated beneath vapor bubbles, the surface temperature often dropped 40° to 75°F. before ultimately reaching the saturation temperature. The thermometers proved to be accurate (±1°F.) and capable of fast response (145°F./msec.).

    Notes: A diffusion model based on the simultaneous interdiffusion and reaction between alternate slabs of reactants is used to simulate the data of Vassilatos and Toor. After slab sizes are chosen to fit the conversion data for very rapid reactions in a stoichiometric mixture, reasonably good predictions are obtained of the effect of stoichiometry and reaction velocity constant on conversion. The results are close to the predictions of Kattan and Adler's stochastic mixing model, and the similar behavior of these disparate models implies that conversion is insensitive to the details of the mixing.

    Notes: A numerical method has been described for the solution of the general equations which depict solidification in the cylindrical coordinate system. The method has been outlined for cooling and solidification of a moving filament of molten polymer. The solution is given in terms of six dimensionless variables: αl/αs, kl/ks, hR/kR, L/[Cps(To-Tc)], To/Tc, and σ∊pR(To-Tc)3/kR. Plots are shown for the solution of the heat transfer equations and associated boundary conditions for several values of the dimensionless variables. The method describes the process of cooling and freezing liquids when convective and/or radiative energy losses are considered. The form of the theoretical equation compares very favorably with experimental data.

    Notes: A theoretical solution for the impingement flow of a jet with a parabolic velocity distribution is given. Viscous generation and diffusion of vorticity in the jet were neglected. Experimental velocity and pressure distributions measured in an impinging jet of air originating with Poiseuille flow compare well with theory, thus justifying the assumption of inviscid flow. Pressure distributions on the deflecting surface were independent of nozzle height in the range 1 to 12 nozzle radii. For lower nozzle heights the effect of the constriction of flow between the nozzle and the surface followed the predicted behavior.
