Description / Table of Contents: Behaviour of chemically resistant steels in the human bodyCorroded bone nails were examined, and it was found that corrosion was due to inadequate surface quality, fissuristation and inter-crystalline corrosion. In order to eliminate such contingencies, it is necessary to use chromium nickel steels alloyed with molybdenum which are proof against intercrystalline corrosion. In addition, any implements to be used for bone-setting purpose call for thorough control during manufacture and close inspection of the finished product. The most favourable condition of the steel surface can be obtained by passivation treatment before use.

Description / Table of Contents: Stress corrosion cracking of austenitic steels in sea waterStable austenitic Mn—Cr and Cr—Ni steels were tested for stress corrosion cracking in cold artificial sea water. The following steel groups were investigated: (%) Steel A ist resistant when annealed at 1050°C and water quenched but shows strong stress corrosion cracking proneness after sensitization between 500 and 800°C. The cracks are intercrystalline. With this steel, stress corrosion cracking is caused not only by sea water but also by tap water and distilled water. The life of the specimens depends on the magnitude of the tensile stress; the higher the stress the shorter is the life. Strees-free specimens show no intercrystalline corrosion.Steel of group B likewise shows, in the sensitized condition, intercrystalline stress corrosion cracking in cold sea water. The range of corrosion proneness is reduced as the carbon content decreases. As with steel A, the life of corrosion-prone specimens is greatly dependent on the tensile stress. Stress-free specimens show intergranular pitting. With steel of group C, intergranular pitting is encountered as a function of carbon content and sensitization. For this type of corrosion, it is still necessary to clarify the influence of tensile stress and the exact ranges of corrosion proneness. With this group of steel, no stress corrosion cracking was observed during tests in cold artificial sea water.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion problems in the Belayim oil fields. I. Influence of differnet variables on the corrosion rate in the flooding systemLaboratory and field tests were carried out in order to determien the corrosivity of the water used for flooding the Belayim oil fields. The influence of oxygen content, flow velocity, operating and standstill periods on the corrosion rate was investigated. The corrosion rate is lowest when all these variables and kept at their lowest possible values (flow velocity 0.5 metres pr. second; oxygen content 0.5 p.p.m.; operating time 30 per cent. of total time)-but this is uneconomical. The highest corrosion rate is encountered with high oxygen concentration (from 5 p.p. m. onwards) and with high operating time percentage.

Description / Table of Contents: A thermodynamic criterion for the inhibition of iron by chromatesA compilation has been made of equilibrium values of Eh for possible electrode reactions in the system Cr/solution. The formation affinities are determined graphically from the equation ΔF° = f(n · O.), resp. ΔF° = f' (n. OH). The regions in which formation of chromium oxides and hydroxids takes place are represented in an affinity (A)/overtension (ΔE) diagram. The pH-dependent inhibiting power of the chromates is explained by the affinity relations in the chemically coupled reactions, i.e. the anodic electrode reaction of Fe and the cathodic electrode reaction of Cr.

Description / Table of Contents: Radiographical investigations into the SiO2—V2O5 systemIn connection with research into the inhibiting effect of amorphous SiO2 on oil ash corrosion in gas turbines, the SiO2—V2O3 system was subjected to radiographical investigations. It was found that, at temperatures up to 1200° C, no compounds are formed between the components of this system. Nor was it possible to observe the formation of mixed crystals. However, during heat treatment, vanadium pentoxide has the effect of speeding up the crystallisation of amorphous SiO2 (Aerosil). Depending on the test conditions, one thereby obtains cristobalite or tridymite, or the disordered or polytype-structure forms of these modifications.

Description / Table of Contents: Examination of the hardening of filled duroplastics through non - destructive testing of the dynamo-elastic properties in the fatigue testThe examination of the dynamo-elastic properties of filled duroplastics as a function of frequency and temperature, subjecting bar-shaped specimens to the bending fatigue test, has shown that this method is well suited for measuring the hardening process due to progressive crosslinking until the material has finally hardened. The method yields data which not only corroborate but also greatly expand the results obtained with other methods. With the aid of this method, it becomes possible to assess the suitability of such resins for specific technical applications, e.g. for acid-resistant apparatus. In the present contribution, this is exemplified by investigating the suitability of a filled phenol resin and a filled furan resin as bonding agents for the brick-lining of steel vessels. By means of the fatigue test, it is possible to obviate the need for lengthy investigations during the development of new products so that the experimental period can be curtailed.

Description / Table of Contents: Inhibiting the corrosion of copper and bronze in ammonium chloride solutions by colloidsInspired by tests carried out by F. D. Talati, M. N. Desai and A. M. Trivedi, the author has carried out solubility tests with pure copper and with bronzes Ms 60 and Ms 70 in 0.1 n-NH4Cl with and without inhibitor content (the latter consisting of the colloids agar and/or gelatine). In the solution free from inhibitor, copper shows the highest corrosion rate, and Ms 60 has a clearly higher rate than Ms 70. As a result of admixtures of agar or gelatine, the copper corrosion caused by the NH4Cl solution is greatly reduced, whilst on the other hand, admixtures consisting of agar and gelatine greatly activate the corrosion attack. Moreover, whilst both types of bronze are protected against NH4Cl corrosion by agar or gelatine admixtures to roughly the same extent, a different proportion of both agar and gelatine added together will result in an inhibition effect which differs in principle, and which may be either positive or negative.

Description / Table of Contents: Organic chromates as corrosion inhibitors in primersResearch has been carried out on the corrosion protection afforded by primers based on alkyd resins or zinc chromates with and without inhibitors (organic chromic acid derivates), using as criteria the solubility of the passivating CrO42- ion, the change in the electro-chemical potential, and direct corrosion tests. The best results were obtained with coatings containing 1.8% chromate anion in the form of 1-methylcyclohexanol-1-chromate.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion of brass tubes in condensers and oil coolersThe article begins with a survey of the typical cases of corrosion damage to condenser and cooler tubes, and of the properties, especially the corrosion resistance, of normal tube materials. There follows a critical appraisal of several cases of tube corrosion damage in Danish power stations, most of which can be ascribed to the effects of external currents. A more detailed description is given of cases of cooler tube damage encountered in a large Danish power station. These cases have given rise to systematic corrosion tests carried out by the author with different tube materials in the cooling water duct of the power station, and to realistic long-time laboratory tests with SoMs 76 with 0.05 As. In the course of these trials, it has been possible to obtain a considerable clarification of the influence of such factors as cooling water temperature, cooling water velocity, cooling water composition (especially the effect of gases and cooper compounds), and natural and artificial coatings.

Description / Table of Contents: The combination of light-microscopic, electron-optic and radiographic methods for the investigation of metal oxide whiskers and top layersSingle crystals on oxide layers of copper, lead, brass, monel, V2A steel, tinplated and galvanized iron have been examined light- and electron-microscopically as well as by electron and X-ray diffraction. The heterogeneous layer structure of iron oxides in steam boiler tubes of low-alloyed steel is determined by electron-optical means. In each case, the most favourable zones for the formation of whiskers are described as a function of temperature. In addition to the shape, the investigations also extended to the direction of crystallographic growth of some oxide whiskers. Electron and X-ray diffraction methods were used for a crystal-chemical identification of the oxidation products. In the presence of several metal components, the oxide whiskers show a selective oxidation, partly dependent on the reaction temperature. The oxide whiskers grow at the top, and the metal ions migrate in a quasi-fluid layer along the crystal surface. With sulphides, material is also transported via the vapour phase. According to our investigations, the growth of CuO whiskers is in linear proportion to time. During the oxidation of iron in air, α-Fe2O3 whiskers are formed whilst in steam boiler operation, there predominantly occur isometric Fe2O4 crystals. In some cases, it was found that α-Fe2O3 can also be formed from Fe3O4. In steam boiler tubes, we found at the metal/oxide boundary, apart from the main oxide Fe3O4, a thick FeO layer extending to several 100 μm thickness.

Description / Table of Contents: Selecting the anti-corrosive paint in accordance with the exposure of the objects  -  exemplified by some objectsIn many cases, the criteria governing the selection of a coating from among the many available anticorrosives, e.g. chlorinated rubber or DD paints, are not always chosen correctly from a technical point of view.In many cases, one goes the wrong way “from the coating to the object”, whilst the right way is “from the object to the coating”. In practice, this truth is often observed too little, e. g. the different ways in which an object may be exposed depending on its geographical location, or even within the same industrial plant. It is not enough to talk of anti-corrosive paints for given objects in general, e.g. gas containers; it is, in fact, necessary to make certain distinctions. For instance, the atmospheric agents acting on a gas container differ according to whether the container is associated with other plants, or stands in isolation, or outdoors.Hoisting towers, gas containers, cooling towers and masts are used as examples to show how the way should be followed from the object to the coating. When the kind of exposure has been worked out for a given object, it becomes possible to select the best suited coating.

Description / Table of Contents: Iron as multiple electrodeAn investigation was carried out, on the strength of results of observations of 27 possible electrode reactions, on the electrochemical behaviour of the Fe/Solution system. The calculations included the electro-chemical affinities of the electrode reactions as well as the chemical reactions at different pH values and with different concentrations of the ions governing the reaction in ech case. The extent of the anodically and cathodically controlled processes was calculated from the excess potentials, and plotted in a corrosion diagram. The possibilities of forming corrosion products are indicated by the affinity/excess potential diagram. A comparison of the relative magnitudes of the different zones yields the stability of the compounds Fe3O4(OH)4(OH)3, Fe2O3, FeO42- as a function of the pH value.

Description / Table of Contents: Inhibiting the corrosion of Al-Cu allosy in hydrochloric acid solutionsThe authors have investigated the possibility of inhibiting the corrosion, in hydrochloric acid, of an Al-Cu alloy with approx. 4 per cent. Cu. The inhibition percentages thus obtained amounted to 20-98 per cent. with acridine; 78-99 per cent. with nicotinic acid; 60-99 per cent. with strychnine; and 58-98 per cent. with chinine hydrochloride. Polarisation studies with chinine hydrochloride revealed a low anodic polarisation but a considerable catholic polarisation, proving the validity of the Tafel equation. The dissolution is of an electrochemical nature and can be prevented by connecting a low external voltage (cathodic protection). It would appear that, in the presence of chinine hydrochloride, the corrosion process is essentially under cathodic control.

Description / Table of Contents: The selective corrosion of copper alloysIt is recommended to distinguish between “selective metal corrosion” where the selective destruction is confined to a single alloy constituent, and “selective structure corrosion” where the selective destruction concerns a certain structure component, i.e. a type of mixed crystals. In the course of a critical survey of technical literature, the authors discuss the dezincking of brass, its causes and mechanism, the influence of top coatings and other factors, including that of alloy constituents, and finally its prevention. It is found that many, including some essential, features of the dezincking process have not yet been clarified. In contrast to dezincking, the reduction of aluminium in aluminium bronze has so far not figured greatly in technical literature. Its mechanism has not been investigated experimentally so that hardly anything is known about preventive measures.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigations on the corrosion of aluminiumThe basic features of the corrosion behaviour of aluminum in contact with aqueous alkaline to slightly acid solutions of sodium chloride and sodium sulphate are summarized with the aid of electro-chemical measurements. In this connection, the following aspects are discussed in some greater detail: Mechanism of uniform dissolution, and its dependence on the pH value; catholic corrosion and cathodic protection; mechanism and inhibition of pit corrosion in alkaline halogenide solutions; calculation and measurement of the rest potential as a function of the pH value; contact corrosion. It is shown that, over the entire pH range normally encountered, those aspects of the electrode behaviour which are of special interest from a corrosion point of view can be consistently interpreted from the behaviour and properties of the oxide or hydroxide covering layer.

Description / Table of Contents: The stress corrosion cracking of iron alloys, with special reference to stainless austenitic steelsBased on a critical evaluation of technical literature and own experience, a survey is given of the present state of knowledge in the sphere of tension crack corrosion of ferrous metals. This is preceded by a general discussion of the phenomena encountered with stress corrosion cracking and the conditions under which it is liable to occur. As far as austenitic chrome nickel steels are concerned, the following influences are discussed in detail: type, concentration, temperature and pH value of the corroding agent, presence of redox systems, type and magnitude of mechanical stresses, factors depending on the material, simultaneous presence of stress corrosion cracking and other corrosion phenomena. The discussion does not include stress corrosion cracking in steam and the formation of cracks caused by hydrogen development during corrosion.A survey of stress corrosion cracking experienced with non-austentic acid-proof and non-alloyed steels is followed by a description of the present routine testing methods used in the laboratory and in operation. Attention is drawn to the different theoretical interpretations and to the possibilities of limiting or preventing stress corrosion cracking. The article is concluded by a description of some cases of damage encountered in practice.
