The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society.     Beschreibung: Mit der Digitalisierung erfährt der Literaturbetrieb der Gegenwart einen massiven Wandel. Autor*innen schaffen mithilfe der sozialen Medien zusätzliche Kommunikations- und Inszenierungsräume – mit der Konsequenz, dass sich die Literaturwissenschaft in ihrer klassischen Terminologie herausgefordert sieht. Der Sammelband setzt sich zum Ziel, diese Auswirkungen der sozialen Medien auf die Gegenwartsliteratur zu erforschen. Dabei fokussieren sie nicht nur kulturelle, sondern vor allem auch geschlechterspezifische Differenzen. Madeleine Löning analysiert am Beispiel eines Romans von Abdellah Taïa und eines Spielfilms von Nadia El Fani die Dekonstruktion von Identität in französischsprachigen Gegenwartskulturen des Maghreb. Based on empirical data from the 5-wave representative survey “Me. The World. In almost three decades, the authors have had a chance to observe and analyse the so-called “historical experiment” that took place in the North-Eastern part of Europe – political and economic transition, technological transformation, and digitalisation. The analysis covers the main topics of people’s life-worlds (socio-economic conditions, civic and political participation, culture, media, environment, consumption, lifestyles, time use, identities, etc.) and attitudes towards a rapidly changing society (perceived risks and benefits). The book aims to re-conceptualise the main results of the empirical studies from the last two decades by synthesising different theoretical perspectives on social change and transformation.

Im Fokus steht die Konturierung des epistemischen Potentials von Diagrammen im Verhältnis zu Schrift und Bild.     Beschreibung: This open access book explores contemporary practices that challenge science, arguing that this matter cannot be simply disregarded as a new manifestation of “anti-scientism”. It scrutinizes the processes through which knowledge claims, refused by established institutions and the scientific community, seek legitimacy. Assuming an agnostic analytical stance, it explores the actors involved in such processes and their social worlds, their interactions with epistemic institutions, and the ways in which they enact such refused knowledge in their daily lives. Drawing on a three-year mixed-method research project, this collection demonstrates how refused knowledge can be seen as a distinct mode of knowing, employed in response to the uncertainties of everyday life. Thus, it offers a deeper understanding not only of how refused knowledge garners credibility, but also of how knowledge at large – including scientific knowledge – emerges from specific sociotechnical assemblages.

    Beschreibung: This Open Access book examines the link between intercultural competence (IC) and pragmatics by asking frontline modern foreign language teachers in higher education teaching a variety of languages (e.g., Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Swedish) how they conceptualise intercultural competence and which skills, competences and knowledge they consider important in their teaching contexts. The data were collected with an online survey that focused on the relationship between intercultural competence and pragmatics. While international organizations such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or the Council of Europe (CoE) agree that intercultural competence should play an important role in education, it is not always clear what IC may encompass in specific teaching contexts and subject areas. Examining how modern foreign language teachers in higher education conceptualise intercultural competence and the value they attach as well as the attention they give to various areas of pragmatics in their teaching is highly important, since those language professionals may be the final teachers learners encounter during their formal foreign language education. They are therefore in a unique position to shape modern foreign language learners’ intercultural and pragmatic awareness, competence and skills. This book will be of interest to language professionals, modern foreign language teachers and teacher trainers, as well as students and scholars of applied linguistics, pragmatics, and language education.

Andererseits arbeiten sie mit der Medialität die ästhetisch zentrale Spannung zwischen künstlerischer Gestaltung und gesellschaftlich orientierten Vermittlungsfunktionen heraus.     Beschreibung: Rechtspopulismus und Autoritarismus, Auseinandersetzungen um »Identitätspolitik«, die Digitalisierung der öffentlichen Debatte und die Macht von Verschwörungstheorien führen zu tiefgreifenden sozialen, kulturellen und politischen Transformationsprozessen. Für die Untersuchung dieser Transformationen sind die Theorien des Politischen und der radikalen Demokratie besonders geeignet, da sie die grundsätzliche Fragilität der liberalen Ordnung analysieren. Fraglich ist jedoch, ob die radikaldemokratische Forderung nach einer Disruption der liberalen Ordnung die richtige Antwort auf die beschriebenen Transformationen ist. Die Beiträge unternehmen eine kritische Revision der Theorien des Politischen und erschließen damit das gegenwartsanalytische Potential radikaldemokratischer Ansätze für die 2020er Jahre.

    Beschreibung: Racial reckoning was a recurrent theme throughout the summer of 2020, a response to George Floyd’s murder and the unprecedented impact of COVID on marginalized groups. Theater and Crisis proposes a literary and theatrical study of how Floyd's killing could possibly happen in the aftermath of the Civil Rights era, and in the supposedly post-racial era following the election of Barack Obama. In the days and months following Floyd's death, there were nightly protests in streets across the United States and broader world. At the same time, theater performances were forced to shift online to video conferencing platforms and to find new ways to engage audiences. In each case, groups made shared meaning through storytelling and narrative, a liberatory process of myth-making and reverence that author Patrice D. Rankine calls “epiphanic encoding.” Rather than approaching the problem of racial reckoning through history, where periodization and progress are dominant narratives, Theater and Crisis argues that myth and memory allow for better theorization about recurring events from the past, their haunting, and what these apparent ghosts ask of us. Building on the study of myth as active, processual storytelling, Rankine acknowledges that it grounds and orients groups toward significant events. Theater and Crisis aligns narratives about Emmett Till, Trayvon Martin, and George Floyd, among others, with ancient, mythic figures such as Christ, Dionysus, Oedipus, and Moses. As living and verbal visitations, these stories performed on stage encode the past through their epiphanies in the present, urging audiences toward shared meaning. Rankine traces the cyclical hauntings of race through the refiguring of mythic stories across the past 75 years in the plays of James Baldwin, Ntozake Shange, Antoinette Nwandu, and many more, and in response to flashpoints in US racial history, such as the 1955 lynching of Emmett Till, the upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s, the wars on drugs and crime, and the continued violence against and disenfranchisement of Black people into the twenty-first century. Theater and Crisis explores the appearance of myth on the American stage and showcases the ongoing response by the theatrical establishment to transform the stage into a space for racial reckoning. This timely book is essential reading for scholars of theater studies, classics, and American studies.

Im Auftrag der Stiftung für Kunst, Kultur und Geschichte (SKKG) in Winterthur widmet sich Sonja Gasser dieser Leerstelle und analysiert in einer Umfrage die Anforderungen zur digitalen Repräsentation von Sammlungen. Die Ergebnisse bieten Museen und anderen Kulturinstitutionen Orientierung und Inspiration - beispielsweise bei der Entwicklung oder Erweiterung eines digitalen Angebots und der Abstimmung digitaler Sammlungen auf die Bedürfnisse der Nutzenden.

    Beschreibung: Die deutschen Gewerkschaften sind massiv von den Auswirkungen der Digitalisierung der Arbeitswelt betroffen. Ihre Organisations- und Durchsetzungsfähigkeit wird ebenso strapaziert wie ihr Anspruch auf eine möglichst umfassende Repräsentation der lohnabhängig Beschäftigten und Arbeitenden. Vor diesem Hintergrund diskutieren die Beiträger*innen die theoretischen Möglichkeiten und praktischen Erfahrungen mit der Digitalisierung von Gegenmacht aus gewerkschaftlicher und sozialwissenschaftlicher Perspektive. Dazu gehören u.a. Formen des Arbeitskampfes im digitalen Sektor und neue, widerständige Praktiken im Internet oder in der digitalen Infrastruktur von Unternehmen und Konzernen.

    Beschreibung: The volume, dedicated to the 44th International Conference of the Italian Union for Drawing, investigates the theme of ‘Transitions’, which particularly effectively represents our time and the current condition of the discipline of Drawing. The term, beyond its generic meaning of an intermediate stage in a process in which a condition changes from one state to another, has always been used in various fields, from music to geophysics. In fact, the disciplines of drawing have always been confronted with themes and issues relating to transitions from one condition to another. The history of representation tells us of transformations, even epochal ones, relating to ‘drawing’, with all that such transitions entail: suffice it to think of the evolution of forms of representation, of instrumental apparatuses, of the mutability of supports, of the analogical-digital transition underway, of the new modes of communication on platforms, of the hypertrophic offer of images also on the net that confirms Guy Debord’s intuitions relating to the new spectacularisation of society. Similarly, representation triggers transitions in the prefiguration and communication of design, the anticipation and foreshadowing of future events.The challenges posed by the digital pose open questions whose scope can only be glimpsed, such as the relationship between drawing and the act of modelling, and the construction of new paradigms of visual language and communication. ‘Transitions’, almost implicitly, points to possible futures, the evolution of technique and the search for new modes of expression; at the same time, however, it can suggest silences and reflections in a process of connection between history, theory, criticism and construction.
