Description: We provide data from experiments with artificial rain over a 5100-liter basin with a retractable roof, where temperature and conductivity (to calculate salinity) were measured at different depths in the upper sea surface, as well as rain properties (intensity, rain temperature, droplet size and velocity). Three different nozzle types were used to investigate the impacts of droplet properties on temperature and salinity anomalies at the sea surface. To measure droplet sizes and velocities, we made calibration measurements with an optical laser disdrometer before the actual experiments. In the first experiments, we excluded external influences such as wind-driven mixing to show on a very small vertical and horizontal scale how very different rainfall intensities and properties such as droplet sizes and velocities affect sea surface temperature and salinity. In a second series of experiments, we used different stages of a flow pump to add turbulence to the basin and find out how quickly the rain water mixes with the seawater at the near-surface layer. The duration of the artificial rain was 15 minutes for all experiments. We used an acoustic doppler velocimeter (ADV) to calculate turbulent kinetic energy at two different depths (14 and 44 cm) within the basin. Additional samples from the sea surface microlayer (SML) were collected before and after the artificial rain in both experiments.

Description: Conductivity-temperature-depth profiles were measured using a Seabird SBE 911plus CTD during RV HEINCKE cruise HE630. The CTD was equipped with duplicate sensors for temperature (SBE3plus), conductivity (SBE4) and oxygen (SBE43). Additional sensors such as a WET Labs C-Star transmissometer, a WET Labs ECO-AFL fluorometer and an altimeter (PSA-916 Teledyne (Benthos)) were mounted to the CTD. Temperature, conductivity and oxygen sensors are calibrated by the manufacturer once a year before being mounted in January. They are used throughout the year and no post-cruise or in-situ calibration is applied. All other sensors are calibrated irregularly. Data were connected to the station book of the specific cruise as available in the DSHIP database. Processing of the data including removal of obvious outliers followed the procedures described in CTD Processing Logbook of RV HEINCKE (hdl:10013/epic.47427). The processing report for this dataset is linked below.

Description: Underway temperature and salinity data was collected along the cruise track with a thermosalinograph (TSG) together with a SBE38 Thermometer. Both systems worked throughout the cruise. While temperature is taken at the water inlet in about 4 m depth, salinity is estimated within the interior TSG from conductivity and interior temperature. No temperature and salinity calibration was performed. For details to all processing steps see Data Processing Report.

Description: This dataset was collected during the cruise HE627 (FjordChange I, 12.08.2023 to 02.09.2023) with RV HEINCKE from Bremerhaven, Germany to Lonyearbyen, Norway It contains chlorophyll a measurements [µg/l] from water samples collected from dicrete sampling via CTD. In total, 13 stations have been sampled. The obtain chl-a concentrations water samples were filtered onboard through 0.7 μm pore size, glass fiber filters (Whatmann GF/F) under low vacuum. Filters were frozen immediately at -80 °C until extraction in laboratory by 90% acetone method. Concentrations were calculated from fluorescence measured with a pre-calibrated Turner Design TD 7200-02 laboratory fluorometer (EPA445.0, Turner Manual). Description: Raw multibeam bathymetry data from the Kongsberg EM710 was acquired during the RV Heincke cruise HE576 in the German Bight. The data was generally acquired during calm seas in water depths between ~20 and 50 m. Primarily three different regions were surveyed (Borkumer Reef Ground, Sylt Outer Reef, and Dogger Bank). In some areas, the data is comprehensive and overlapping swaths creating a continuous bathymetry were archived. In other areas the data was acquired complementary to sidescan sonar surveys and individual tracks do not overlap. Data are unprocessed and therefore may contain some incorrect depth measurements (artifacts) without further processing. No tide variations are applied. Sound velocity profiles were acquired regularly. Overall, it appears that the data quality is rather good. The gridded data showed relatively few obstacles.

Description: Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) data were collected by recorder SV1032 of type Sono.Vault (manufactured by develogic GmbH, Hamburg, Germany) at 63.7015 ° S, 50.8268 ° W, mooring AWI207-9, in Weddell Sea, Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. During a deployment period from January 2013 to January 2017, passive acoustic data were collected from January 2013 to June 2013 (recording period) by SV1032 as part of the Hybrid Antarctic Float Observing System (HAFOS) in the Weddell Sea. The recorder was moored at 219 m depth and scheduled to record continuously at a sample rate of 9,600 Hz. Further details about the data acquisition and processing of this data set can be found in the accompanying metadata file (see Additional metadata) as well as the data processing report (see Data Processing Report). Passive acoustic data archived here represent data processing Level 1+, according to the standards defined in the associated Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) Glossary (Thomisch et al. 2023a). Further information on data processing with regard to data preparation and standardization can be found in the associated SOP Part 1: Data preparation and standardization (Thomisch et al. 2023b).

Description: δ18O values (versus Pee Dee belemnite standard) of C. wuellerstorfi (3-10 specimens, 〉154µm) and G. ruber (white) sensu stricto (8-12 specimens, 250-350µm). The stable isotope composition was measured by Finnigan-MAT253 mass spectrometer equipped with an automatic carbonate preparation device (Kiel III) at the State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology, Tongji University. The isotopic results were calibrated on the Pee Dee Belemnite scale using the China National standard NBS 19. The SD is ±0.07‰. Sample preparation for Mg/Ca measurements on G. ruber samples followed Lea et al. (2000; doi:10.1126/science.289.5485.1719). The Mg/Ca measurements for the upper 400 cm were done using on ICP-MS at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of California, Santa Barbara, the remaining samples were analyzed at the State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology, Tongji University. The Mg/Ca to temperature conversion followed Hollstein et al. (2017; doi:10.1002/2017PA003122). The records cover the last ~142 kyr.

Description: This data file contains benthic foraminiferal oxygen isotope (δ¹⁸O) and carbon isotope (δ13C) records from ODP Site 807 A. Data from the depth intervals 0.17–8.37 mbsf and 26.27–42.37 mbsf were previously published in Zhang et al. (2007) and Du et al. (2016), respectively. Isotope measurements are based on the 〉150µm fraction of C. wuellerstorfi where available. If C. wuellerstorfi was not available, specimens of U. peregrina and C. mundulus were used for analysis. All stable isotopic analyses were performed at the State Key Laboratory of Marine Geology, Tongji University on Finnigan MAT 252 or 253 mass spectrometers. External reproducibility based on replicate analyses of benthic foraminiferal samples is 0.07‰ and 0.04‰ for δ18O and δ13C.Various benthic foraminiferal species fractionate oxygen and carbon isotopes differently when forming tests, resulting in offsets in δ18O and δ13C. To account for this, we adopted such conventional correction factors of C. wuellerstorfi and C. mundulus/Uvigerina peregerina that 0.64 ‰ was subtracted from the δ18O and 0.9 ‰ was added to the δ13C of Uvigerina peregerina (Duplessy et al., 1984; Shackleton, 1974).
