    Description: Asphalt modification is an important area in the development of new road and pavement materials. There is an urgent demand for road materials that can minimize fracture at low temperatures and increase resistance to deformation at high temperatures. The function of asphalt is to bind aggregate to protect it from water and other harmful agents. In the beginning asphalt was ideal for this purpose, but recently traffic loads have increased and environmental factors have deteriorated more rapidly than before. Asphalt is a byproduct of crude oil in the refining process, and it is considered a complex heterogeneous mixture of hydrocarbons. Asphalt modification has become an important research area, using several methods and new materials as modifiers.

    Description: To have unimaginably outstanding useful properties (physical, mechanical, electrical, optical, chemical, and magnetic) in a single material design is a highly challenging task in the material science community, which can be achieved through nanocomposites. These nanocomposites can be produced from all conventional materials, which include polymers, metals/alloys, and ceramics, by modifying their internal structures. Due to modification of the structures of all kinds of conventional materials, at either the nano or ultra-fine level, the materials exhibit superior performance, which is a boon for all fields of science. In general, nanocomposite materials can be manufactured by solid-state processing techniques, liquid metallurgy, ex-situ and in-situ powder metallurgy, and other basic science synthesis routes. Furthermore, the possibility of making environmentally friendly materials is also possible with nanotechnology.     Description: Nanoclays, currently regarded as nanomaterials with sustainable characteristics, have a variety of intriguing properties. Clays come in a wide variety of nanoscale morphologies and are chemically made up of hydrated aluminum silicates with varying amounts of additional elements like magnesium, iron, calcium, and potassium. Given their properties and accessibility in a variety of nanoscale morphologies, nanoclays are well suited for a broad range of possible uses. To create nanocomposite materials with specific characteristics and particular functionalities, composites based on polymers and clay nanoparticles have been thoroughly investigated. Recent research has demonstrated the use of polymer/nanoclay systems in the antibacterial coating, smart food packaging, drug delivery systems, tissue engineering, reinforced bioplastics, and flame-retardant materials. However, further study is still required to clarify their structure-property relationships. Hybrid organic/inorganic clays generate a wide number of perspectives, nanoarchitectures and materials. In general, the utilization of nanoclays can remove the typical cost barrier associated with nanotechnologies and provide new, sustainable pathways. The contributions that describe recent research in nanoclay science for technological applications are collected in this edited volume.

    Description: The most effective method of producing nanofibres is the technology of producing in the electrostatic field, which does not require the use of complicated procedures and equipment. Electrospinning allows to produce 1D nanostructures on an industrial scale in a relatively easy and quick way. The method of electrospinning shares the most features with classical technologies in obtaining synthetic fibres that enable forming and generating a stream of previously dissolved or melted polymer and its coaxial stretching, combined with the transition of the polymer from a liquid state to a solid state. In view of the large application possibilities of electrospun fibres, electrospinning is enjoying a dynamically growing interest of scientists, which can be proven by the increasing trend of scientific publications.

    Description: Hyaluronan-based hydrogels are optimal candidates when developing novel combined advanced therapy medicinal products (cATMP), tissue engineering products (TEP), and medical devices. The key physico-chemical properties of hydrogels may hinder, mediate, or stimulate therapeutic potentials borne by standardised cellular substrates in regenerative medicine. Parallel to delivery system or scaffold development, hydrogel functionalisation may be advantageous in specific musculoskeletal interventions or topical applications (e.g. viscosupplementation, soft tissue volumetric supplementation, rehabilitation topical preparations). Optimised combination product developmental workflows enable pragmatic regulatory classification of cell-based preparations. Such aspects will be discussed, as well as sustainable transposition to industrialised production settings. Hyaluronan benefits from extensive hindsight in numerous human and veterinary applications, providing a highly versatile backbone for quasi-infinite structural modification and physico-chemical property modulation. This chapter provides an overview of critical product design considerations and possible therapeutic applications of versatile hyaluronan-based preparations intended for cell therapy delivery, combined with optimised autologous or allogeneic therapeutic cell sources (e.g. platelet-rich plasma, stem cells, banked primary foetal progenitors). Particular focus was set on specific parameters directly impacting product potential in terms of clinical translation and effectiveness for topical wound healing or sub-critical volumetric defect correction and repair stimulation in musculoskeletal regenerative medicine applications.

    Description: Nano- and micro-sized natural fibers of vegetable origin are fully biodegradable in nature. However, the nano- and micro-sized synthetic fibers are fully man-made. Fiber-reinforced composites composed of stiffened fiber and matrix are well-known engineering materials. Fiber-reinforced materials have been used in industrial production. Natural fibers can be obtained from many sources in nature such as wool, sisal, ramie, kenaf, jute, hemp, grass, flax, cotton, coir, bamboo and abaca, banana, and sugarcane bagasse. Artificial fibers have been produced from more stiff materials such as glass, single-walled carbon nanotubes, double-walled carbon nanotubes, carbon, aramid, boron and polyethylene (PE). The cyclic reusability of materials is an important qualification in protecting the environment from waste pollution. Three important factors can be mentioned in terms of material properties in the recycling process. The first factor is "the rate of cyclic usage," the second one is "less material loss in each recycle," and the last one is "the role of waste products in the self-renewal of ecosystem." In engineering area, the usage of waste materials has taken into account in production of composite materials. The use of waste materials as particulate-type composite production is also possible in the industry. Fiber-reinforced materials can be grouped into two categories: "the natural fiber-reinforced materials" and "the artificially produced fiber-reinforced materials." Finally, we conclude that this book consists of mainly summarized three subject headings within the two specific book subsections : The first group contains the main subjects related to the natural and artificial fibers obtained by literature review; second, experimental and numerical studies are made in order to perform the necessary arrangements in the production stages and to establish a decision mechanism on the specification of the technical properties of the fiber-reinforced composites. The third group of studies focused on the use of sustainable bio-composites and recycled textile wastes as reinforcements in construction.
