Description: Syntax of Dutch: Verbs and Verb Phrases consists of three volumes. Volume 1 opens with a general introduction to verbs, including a review of various verb classifications and discussions on inflection, tense, mood, modality and aspect. This is followed by a comprehensive discussion of complementation (argument structure and verb frame alternations). Volume 2 continues the discussion of complementation, but is more specifically focused on clausal complements: the reader will find detailed discussions of finite and infinitival argument clauses, complex verb constructions and verb clustering. Volume 3 concludes with a description of adverbial modification and the overall structure of clauses in relation to, e.g., word order (verb placement, wh-movement. extraposition phenomena, scrambling, etc.).

Description: In this study the syntactic properties of empty categories and dummy pronouns are investigated within the framework of Government-Binding theory. The assumption that clauses must have a subject is present in most, if not all, linguistic theories. In GB theory the requirement that clauses have a subject is stipulated as a consequence of the base rules or the Extended Projection Principle. In this book it is claimed that no such stipulation is necessary. The presence of a subject is exclusively determined by the theories of thematic roles and Case. This view is supported by the fact that the alleged dummy subjects Dutch, i.e. er and het, show a variety of properties, which can only be explained if they are not analyzed as dummy subjects. Further confirmation is derived from the fact that Dutch, subjectless sentences are found in precisely those circumstances in which neither -theory nor Case theory requires a subject to be present. Chapter 1 presents a theory of empty categories. This theory enables us to explain the distribution of gaps, and makes precise and correct predictions with respect to the occurrence of parasitic gaps. The non-dummy status of het, discussed in chapter 2, is supported by the fact that it can be the antecedent of PRO, reflexives, and parasitic gaps, and by an asymmetry in wh-movement from sentential complements. The analysis of het leads to a discussion of a variety of constructions, including constructions with raising, ergative, and psychological verbs. The adverbial pronoun er displays several distinct syntactic functions. In chapter 3 it is argued that none of these different functions justifies an analysis of er as a dummy subject. In chapter 4 some of the consequences of the theory introduced in the preceding chapters are investigated. These include a discussion of the status of the subject position in languages such as English, Italian, French, and Spanish, the structure of Old English, and the status of dummy pronouns in German and English.

Description: This collective work is a tribute to Franck Neveu, a leading expert and professor of language sciences, whose original thinking and extensive academic contribution will have a lasting impact on research in linguistics. In linguistics and/or in language sciences, because this is an old and constantly recurring debate. Franck Neveu resolutely pronounced himself in favour of the latter, although he positioned himself, equally resolutely, as a linguist. This collective volume pays tribute to this open-mindedness by bringing together contributions from renowned authors close to the dedicatee, who explore not only his areas of specialisation such as syntax, semantics and the epistemology of language sciences, but also neighbouring disciplines such as dialectology or text genetics. It has the work of Franck Neveu as its unifying theme and is intended to promote French linguistics, which he champions and illustrates. Thanks to its contributions which represent current research, this book will be of interest to both a specialist audience and one that is keen to learn about language sciences.

Description: This second edition updates a text which laid the foundations of the field of critical ethnographic sociolinguistics, and which has become an essential reference and important teaching tool. The book lays the foundation of this approach through a longue durée ethnography of the practices, discourses and ideologies of language and nation in francophone Canada. The new edition provides an update of the development of the ethnographic sites discussed, as well as on the theoretical, methodological, political and ethical aspects of the approach.

Description: The Syntax of Dutch aims at presenting a synthesis of the currently available syntactic knowledge of Dutch. It is primarily concerned with language description and not with linguistic theory, and provides support to all researchers interested in matters relating to the syntax of Dutch, including advanced students of language and linguistics. Syntax of Dutch: Verbs and Verb Phrases consists of three volumes. Volume 1 opens with a general introduction to verbs, including a review of various verb classifications and discussions on inflection, tense, mood, modality and aspect.
