    Description: In an effort to determine the feasibility of requiring all Air Force officers to attain a specific level of proficiency in a second language, the authors conducted a survey of current Air Force officers. The results suggest that such a requirement is not currently feasible. However, it would instead be desirable to offer incentives for a variety of efforts made toward achieving proficiency, both before and after commissioning.

    Description: This is a concise guide for authors, translators, revisers, copy-editors, and proof-readers involved in the production of manuscripts for publications. A brief overview of successive stages in the production process is given along with guidelines on how to prepare and submit work. The Guide also contains pointers on grammar, and American-English punctuation and spelling; instructions on citing references and bibliographical information; guidelines on transliterating Arabic terms and phrases; and tips on capitalization, especially in relation to Arabic terminology. The Guide as a whole is the outcome of consultations among people with many years of experience in preparing works for publication. In addition to offering sound advice on dealing with some of the common difficulties and problems encountered in translating material from Arabic to English, it also highlights a strategy for translation and defines the task of the author, translator and copy-editor. The Guide is also useful for those who want to standardize format across their publications and ensure consistency in their work, particularly when working with material translated from Arabic.     Description: This volume brings together both the elementary scientific facts that any lunar calendar formulation cannot ignore and a summary of the pressing scientific questions of particular interest to the Islamic calendar. Scientific aspects of the problem are thoroughly reviewed without prejudicing the argument in purely Islamic juridical questions and differences. The results are of great significance to both Islamic scholars and the general Muslim public. The papers presented are of a high scientific quality and are followed by a unanimous statement of the professional astronomers on the scientific questions. If these conclusions are followed, the varying sets of conventions used by different Islamic populations can be made selfconsistent and free from scientific errors, even if they still differ from each other. This new edition allows the correction of errors in the first edition, makes the style more uniform among the papers, and improves the articles’ graphs and figures. It aims to serve as an effective tool for addressing the calendrical issues that motivated the conference more than being merely a historical record. A new Afterword summarizes refinements in the scientific issues that have taken place in the ten years since the conference, many of which were prompted by the work presented here.

    Description: Inter- bzw. transdisziplinäre Forschungsarbeit ist im aktuellen Wissenschaftsbereich häufig gängige Praxis, obwohl die Verständnisse über Umfang und Strukturen einer solchen Zusammenarbeit keineswegs einheitlich sind. Die Autor*innen vermitteln anhand eines Virtual-Reality-Trainings für soziale Kompetenzen Einblicke in die Prozesse des gemeinsamen Forschens. In einer Reihe von Gesprächen reflektieren sie über die Ideenfindung zu ihrem Projekt des »Virtual Skills Lab«, die Entwicklung der dazugehörigen Forschungsfrage sowie deren Ausarbeitung in Form der interaktiven Szene. Entlang dieses Beispiels für virtuelles Training werden schließlich praktische Empfehlungen zur Gestaltung der übergreifenden Zusammenarbeit im digitalen Wandel angeboten.
