    Description: This book reviews the course of NATO policy on German reunification from the perspective of West German preferences and Bonn's endeavors to have them respected in the diplomatic efforts of the major allies. With its accession to NATO, the West German government under Adenauer continued its policy of rehabilitating the German people in the eyes of the Western political community by playing a willing and sometimes leading role in joint ventures whose purpose was said to transcend the nation-state.

It combines information on languages, dialects, alphabets, religions, mass violence, or migrations over an extended period of time. The story first focuses on Central Europe’s dialect continua, the emergence of states, and the spread of writing technology from the tenth century onward. Most maps concentrate on the last two centuries. The main storyline opens with the emergence of the Western European concept of the nation, in accord with which the ethnolinguistic nation-states of Italy and Germany were founded. In the Central European view, a “proper” nation is none other than the speech community of a single language. The Atlas aspires to help users make the intellectual leap of perceiving languages as products of human history and part of culture. Like states, nations, universities, towns, associations, art, beauty, religions, injustice, or atheism—languages are artefacts invented and shaped by individuals and their groups.

    Le retour de Lyon sous l’autorité royale à la fin des guerres de Religion (1593-1597) (2022)

    Description: Henri Hours' book on the end of the League in Lyon is one of the most important works of 16th century historiography in Lyon, although very few readers have had the opportunity to consult it. This is its main paradox and the challenge of this edition. The thesis was defended at the École Nationale des Chartes in 1951, but it has never been published and, in accordance with the rules of the École, it has never been made available. Only those who knew the author were able to read it, which does not prevent it from appearing in all bibliographies concerning the Wars of Religion. Following his death in 2017 and with the agreement of his family, the Collection Chrétiens & Sociétés has decided to publish this memoir for the first time in order to make it accessible to the public in Lyon and to historians of religious confrontations. Henri Hours meticulously analysed the last years of the League at Lyon, the crucial years 1593-1597. Since 1589, the city had swayed to the side of Catholic intransigence to the point of rejecting its sovereign, Henry IV, and maintaining a costly but necessary war effort in a region crossed by denominational borders. The bishop, Pierre d'Epinac, the consuls of Lyon, the governor of the city, the Savoyard and Spanish spies, but also the street preachers and the little people who were very inclined to be alarmed, were the main actors in these events. Here we touch on the political and religious dimensions of urban history. Through municipal deliberations, correspondence, pamphleteering and some contemporary accounts, Henri Hours unravels the skein of the city's political shift towards submission to the king. By looking back at the writings of some of these actors, notably Pierre Mathieu and Claude de Rubys, he also questions the memory of the event in the consciousness of Lyon.

    Description: Les auteurs de cet ouvrage “ Pierre et Archéologie ”, issu du Colloque international qui s’est tenu à Tautavel (14-15 mai 1998) veulent attirer l’attention sur les nombreux aspects de l’utilisation de la pierre par l’Homme depuis la Préhistoire, et les difficultés pour comprendre et expliquer son identification, son évolution et sa conservation. Mise à part l’utilisation lointaine de la pierre par l’homme préhistorique pour assurer sa survie, il reste le domaine très vaste, plus récent dans le temps, de la pierre de taille utilisée par les hommes. Déjà les gallo-romains se sont servis des pierres dites « du midi » pour des constructions que nous connaissons bien. Mais la pierre n’est pas réservée seulement aux monuments, elle fait partie de la vie quotidienne. En dehors des grands édifices, de nombreuses habitations sont bâties en pierre et souvent leur sol est pavé de pierres. Il y a aussi l’amour de la pierre tout simplement, pour le beau, le toucher : c’est par exemple la sculpture qui agrémente les monuments et même les habitations. Les sarcophages en marbre blanc, sculptés entre la fin de l’Antiquité classique et le Haut Moyen-Age, dont le problème de l’origine est traité dans cet ouvrage, montrent bien la diversité des aspects artistiques que l’Homme a su exploiter. L’ensemble des contributions présentées apporte des données originales sur les méthodes et techniques modernes utilisées pour contribuer à mieux comprendre l’évolution culturelle et artistique de l’humanité, le devenir de la pierre extraite et la restauration des monuments. Ceci montre une fois de plus la nécessité d’une recherche pluridisciplinaire, seule démarche pour assurer la protection et la pérennité de tout ce qui touche notre patrimoine.

    Description: In recent years, through novels and television series ("Vikings", "Millennium", "Borgen" or "Occupied"), Nordic culture has become more visible internationally. At the same time, researchers are questioning what the North is, its conceptualisation, its cultural implications, its geographical characteristics, its social and political challenges. This volume is part of the current debate on the Nordic imaginary based on a notion, Nordicity, which intersects with borealism. Plural and mobile, the North inspires both scriptural and figurative production based on desire, dream, fascination or fantasy. The real, tangible and contingent North is only the apparent surface of a manufactured and invented North. How can we express northernness today? Is a theory of the North possible? This volume attempts to answer these questions by bringing together contributions from researchers in Nordic studies, literature, linguistics and the humanities: each is given the opportunity to define his own conception of Nordicity. Ces dernières années, à travers romans et sériés télévisées ("Vikings", "Millennium", "Borgen" ou "Occupied"), la culture nordique a gagné en visibilité internationale. Simultanément, les chercheurs s'interrogent sur ce qu’est le Nord, sa conceptualisation, ses implications culturelles, ses caractéristiques géographiques, ses enjeux sociaux et politiques. Ce volume s’insère dans le débat actuel sur l’imaginaire nordique à partir d’une notion – la nordicité – qui interagit tout particulièrement avec le boréalisme. Pluriel et mouvant, moteur constant de redéfinitions, le Nord inspire une fabrication tant scripturale que figurale fondée sur le désir, le rêve, la fascination ou le fantasme. Den amerikanischen Kolonisten ging es um zweierlei: einerseits um die völkerrechtliche Anerkennung ihres Abfalls vom englischen Königreich und andererseits um die finanzielle Unterstützung der amerikanischen Revolutionäre durch die anderen europäischen Staaten. Hierbei spielten die Republik der Vereinigten Niederlande diplomatisch und die Amsterdamer Finanzhäuser ökonomisch eine viel zu lang unterschätzte Rolle. In einer Nahbetrachtung der diplomatischen und finanztechnischen Aktionen der beteiligten Diplomaten, Politiker und Kaufleute und ihrer jeweiligen Einschätzungen durch Roland Richter wird die Komplexität des historischen Prozesses erkennbar und ein weiterführender Beitrag zur transatlantischen Niederlandeforschung geleistet.

    Description: Originally published in 1974. Focusing on a set of Jewish communities, Robert Chazan tells how, by the eleventh century, French Jews had created for themselves a role as local merchants and moneylenders in adapting to the political, economic, and social limits imposed on them. French society, striving to become more powerful and civilized, was willing to extend aid and protection to the Jews in return for general stimulation of trade and urban life and for the immediate profit realized from taxation. While the authorities were relatively successful in protecting the Jews from others, there was no power to impose itself between the Jews and their protectors. The political and social well-being of the Jews was, therefore, dependent on the will of the governing authorities who taxed their holdings and regulated their activities. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the position of the Jews was constantly under attack by reform elements in the church concerned with Jewish moneylending and blasphemous materials in Jewish books; these reformers were eventually devoted to a serious missionizing effort within the Jewish community. The Jews' situation was further complicated by deep popular animosity, expressing itself in a damaging set of slanders and occasionally in physical violence. Despite the impressive achievements of the Jews in medieval northern France, by the thirteenth century their community was increasingly constricted; and in 1306, they were expelled from royal France by Philip IV. Overcoming the handicap of a lack of copious source material, Chazan analyzes the Jews' political status, their relations with key elements of Christian society, their demographic development, their economic outlets, their internal organization, and their attitudes toward the Christian environment. As it highlights aspects of French society from an unusual perspective, Medieval Jewry in Northern France should be of special interest to the historian of medieval France as well as to the student of Jewish history. This story is also significant for all who are fascinated by the capacity of human groups to respond and adapt creatively to a hostile and limiting environment.

Si, comme on s’y attendait, les évolutions sont dissemblables, les conclusions de Chris Wickham montrent la force de la tradition byzantine à propos de la grande propriété et du commerce ; l’héritage byzantin n’est pas uniforme, mais, même dans ces domaines éloignés de l’idéologie, il a laissé des traces durables.

À l’heure où la France vient d’adopter la loi sur la reconquête de la biodiversité, la question des « nuisibles » reprend une singulière acuité avec la multiplication d’espèces exotiques envahissantes et les vives controverses qui demeurent autour du loup, du renard mais aussi de l’utilisation des insecticides et des herbicides pour se défaire de « gêneurs ». Si la notion de « nuisible » demeure centrale dans la gestion du sauvage par nos sociétés, elle s’avère très variable selon l’époque, l’espèce, le territoire ou le groupe social considéré. Pour dresser un état de la recherche, historiciser cette notion et éclairer les enjeux actuels, il convient de croiser les regards afin de caractériser les différentes conceptions de la notion de « nuisible » qui coexistent actuellement et d’en retracer les origines, tout en s’ouvrant aux acteurs du présent. Ainsi cet ouvrage entend contribuer à explorer les interactions entre les sociétés et la nature, et permettre de mieux saisir leurs coévolutions.

    Description: The Eve of Spain demonstrates how the telling and retelling of one of Spain’s founding myths played a central role in the formation of that country’s national identity. King Roderigo, the last Visigoth king of Spain, rapes (or possibly seduces) La Cava, the daughter of his friend and counselor, Count Julian. In revenge, the count travels to North Africa and conspires with its Berber rulers to send an invading army into Spain. So begins the Muslim conquest and the end of Visigothic rule. A few years later, in Northern Spain, Pelayo initiates a Christian resistance and starts a new line of kings to which the present-day Spanish monarchy traces its roots.Patricia E. Grieve follows the evolution of this story from the Middle Ages into the modern era, as shifts in religious tolerance and cultural acceptance influenced its retelling. She explains how increasing anti-Semitism came to be woven into the tale during the Christian conquest of the peninsula—in the form of traitorous Jewish conspirators. In the sixteenth century, the tale was linked to the looming threat of the Ottoman Turks. The story continued to resonate through the Enlightenment and into modern historiography, revealing the complex interactions of racial and religious conflict and evolving ideas of women’s sexuality.In following the story of La Cava, Rodrigo, and Pelayo, Grieve explains how foundational myths and popular legends articulate struggles for national identity. She explores how myths are developed around few historical facts, how they come to be written into history, and how they are exploited politically, as in the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 followed by that of the Moriscos in 1609. Finally, Grieve focuses on the misogynistic elements of the story and asks why the fall of Spain is figured as a cautionary tale about a woman’s sexuality.

    Description: À un moment où l’on s’efforce de combler le fossé économique, politique et psychologique qui sépare les rives nord et sud de la Méditerranée, il a paru utile de présenter une pratique peu connue - la caravane maritime - qui a, partiellement, joué ce rôle pendant un siècle et demi. Ce vocable quelque peu inattendu désignait la prestation de service que rendirent, de la fin du XVIIe au début du XIXe siècle, les marins européens aux sujets de l’Empire ottoman. Ils assuraient la plupart des liaisons maritimes pour cette immense construction politique à peu près dépourvue de navires de commerce, bien que bordant la majeure partie du littoral méditerranéen. Après avoir exposé les conditions juridiques qui ont encouragé ce type d’association temporaire, Daniel Panzac présente les marins, la pratique quotidienne de la caravane, avant d’évoquer ensuite les affréteurs ottomans. C’est principalement à travers leurs différends que se révèlent les éphémères relations de ces hommes et leur façon de surmonter leur méfiance et leurs préjugés. Ce faisceau dense de liaisons maritimes favorisa la constitution d’un ensemble économique, une « économie-monde », facteur essentiel de cohésion de cet État aussi vaste qu’hétérogène que fut l’Empire ottoman, ensemble dont l’effondrement dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle précéda l’éclatement politique.

Ajoutons les nouveautés scénographiques et le succès international de cette pièce, imitée par Thomas Shadwell en Angleterre, pour accroître l’intérêt de cette édition.

    Description: La famille constitue depuis longtemps un objet d’étude privilégié des historiens des sociétés. Ayant abandonné l’attention presque exclusive accordée autre­fois aux seuls lignages aristocratiques voire royaux, cette histoire de la famille a connu depuis un demi-siècle de profonds renouvellements, tant thématiques que méthodologiques. Directement impliquée dans l’histoire quantitative, notamment par le biais de la « reconstruction des familles », la thématique familiale s’est retrouvée au centre de l’histoire des mentalités. Ultérieurement enfin, via l’importation de problématiques venues des autres sciences sociales et le recours à la démarche « micro-historique », la famille s’est muée en un espace social et anthropologique au sein duquel sont mises à jours les dynamiques qui affectent ces réalités familiales. Dans le même temps, ces réflexions sur le passé d’une réalité sociale toujours vivante viennent en écho aux interrogations contemporaines sur le devenir de la famille nucléaire. La « crise » d’un modèle familial pluriséculaire et les recompositions familiales auxquelles elles donnent lieu placent ces réflexions sur la famille au cœur d’un débat de société particulièrement intense. Dans ce contexte qui fait de la famille un sujet d’actualité brûlant, le colloque organisé à Toulouse a voulu dresser un bilan des travaux les plus récents des meilleurs spécialistes du sujet, il s’est inscrit dans une démarche délibérément comparatiste tout en insistant sur les continuités et les ruptures identifiables tant en termes de problématiques, de démarches que de résultats. Compte tenu de la spécificité du laboratoire à l’origine de cette réflexion, le comparatisme concerne essentiellement les espaces français et ibérique, ce dernier étant compris au sens large puisqu’il intègre les sociétés coloniales ibéro-américaines. Dans le même temps, ce colloque a fait le choix de la transdisciplinarité et de la longue durée, depuis le bas Moyen-Âge jusqu’au xxe siècle. Cette longue phase chronologique coïncide avec l’émergence puis le développement de la structure nucléaire, modèle familial précisément en cours de redéfinition aujourd’hui. À son propos, leurs auteurs y confrontent des approches historiques, sociologiques, anthropologiques et juridiques qui toutes éclairent les complexités de cette histoire tout en contextualisant les interroga­tions contemporaines.

O Paço dá também conta da evolução e do pulsar da cidade ao longo de séculos, pois nele encontramos expressões das diferentes tendências artísticas e culturais que se fizeram sentir, um pouco por toda a Europa, entre os finais da Idade Média e os finais do Antigo Regime. Assim, os seus sucessivos acrescentos e fases construtivas representam exemplos paradigmáticos da racionalidade urbanística e das linguagens arquitetónicas características do longo período de progressiva construção dos “paços” que compõem o Paço arcebispal bracarense. A história da sua evolução representa também um excelente testemunho das mudanças ocorridas nas cidades com vocação senhorial, permitindo-nos entender como foram mudando as estratégias de propaganda e de afirmação pública do poder no espaço urbano medieval, renascentista e barroco.

Pourquoi précisément cette opération militaire est-elle désormais régulièrement commémorée par autant de chefs d’État sous le regard des télévisions du monde entier ?     Description: L’inceste marque de sa monstruosité les consciences collectives. Cantonné dans la sphère du tabou et de l’infamie, nul ne peut le discuter, nul ne peut le pratiquer. Le phénomène existe pourtant sous différentes formes selon les sociétés dans lesquelles il est rencontré et pensé. En France, au xixe siècle, l’inceste a une histoire. Lorsqu’en 1791 les Constituants décident de le décriminaliser, la société française voit s’ouvrir un siècle de débats qui conduit à une requalification profonde du phénomène et de son imaginaire. L’étude croisée des discours entretenus par les élites souligne les étapes qui ont présidé à la construction de l’inceste criminel. À la fin du siècle, il n’est plus l’apanage des aristocrates décriés par les Lumières mais bien celui d’hommes pauvres, devenus les symboles d’une nouvelle dangerosité. La justice, par l’entrelacement de ses échelles et de ses acteurs, contribue également à fabriquer et à imposer progressivement ce masque sur le phénomène incestueux. Mais l’inceste n’est pas qu’un crime au xixe siècle. En tentant de pénétrer au cœur même des familles, cet ouvrage montre qu’il peut également être une sexualité consentie qui se pratique dans la clandestinité de certains foyers français. Réalité multiforme, interdit plus que tabou, l’inceste mérite en ce sens d’être replacé dans une histoire plus courte que l’intemporalité des anthropologues.

Mais dans un cas comme dans l’autre s’établissent des hiérarchies, mises au service de différents discours de domination et d’exclusion.     Description: La Estoria de España, written under the aegis of Alfonso X the Wise, King of Castile and León (1252-1284), traces the history of the Iberian Peninsula and more specifically of Castile, from its origins to the 13th century. While many renowned researchers have studied the Estoria, all of this work, which is also essential, only offers a partial view of the first part of the chronicle. No comprehensive study has in fact been devoted to the story of the origins. However, in order to measure the richness and complexity of peninsular history, it is necessary to take into account this large time interval between the beginnings of humanity and the year 711. The domination of the Greeks, the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Barbarians and the Visigoths, the collapse of the Kingdom of Toledo and the beginnings of the Kingdom of Asturias do indeed constitute a story of the origins. The author of the book therefore starts from the premise that the first 565 chapters of the Estoria cannot be considered as a mere preliminary without any political significance. Several questions are thus at the origin of this work: how do the new challenges of the 13th century (expansion of the borders of the kingdom, fecho del Imperio, new political conceptions, opposition of the nobility and the clergy, monopolization of writing by the king…) influence the conception of Spain's past? How does the Wise King found the greatness of the Iberian Peninsula, how does he legitimize its foundations and how does he define the exercise of royal power? The analysis of the different episodes, of the numerous portraits, of the relationships between the characters, as well as of the writing processes makes it possible to bring to light the textual and ideological originality of this part of the chronicle and the links between the Estoria and the Alphonsine ideal defended in the other works of the Wise King. Unraveling the biblical, ancient and medieval structures and topics used by the Wise King, the author reveals the different networks of symbolic, political, sapiential and spiritual transmission that are at work in the story and thus highlights the way in which the sovereign, by celebrating a common territory and past, guarantors of Hispanic identity, develops a myth of national creation; which allows Soizic Escurignan to conclude that the story of the origins is meant to be programmatic, and more than that, performative.

    Description: Through his literary, historical and political oeuvre, Safvet-beg Bašagić (1870-1934) has formulated the great issues of bosnian-muslim nationalism, at a time when his community retreated from the demands placed upon it by the process of modernisation imposed by the austro-hungarian presence since the Berlin Congres of 1878. Inspired by ottoman, croat and serb nationalist movements of the 19th century, he attempted to establish an identity that was distinct from those of these movements by affirming the religious and cultural specificity of his fellow believers and compatriots. These engagements were intimately connected to the agrarian question in Bosnia-Herzegovina: Bašagić acted as a conservator, stressing that ownership of land was a historical right of the local beylicat, to which he belonged. During his lifetime he did not have the audience for which he would have wished; but the essential elements of his theses, despite their lack of scientific rigor, have flourished today.

    Description: Ce livre s’inscrit clans la série des recherches suscitées par l’enquête sur le personnel parlementaire de la Troisième République, entreprise par l’URA 1016 du CNRS, au sein du Centre d’histoire du xixe siècle qui asso­cie les Universités de Paris I et de Paris IV. Cet ouvrage porte sur une catégorie de sénateurs aujourd’hui oubliée : les inamovibles, nommés d’abord par l’Assemblée nationale, puis par le Sénat, conformément à la loi constitutionnelle du 24 février 1875. Jusqu’à la révision constitutionnelle de 1884, qui mit fin à ce mode de désignation, il y eut cent seize sénateurs inamovibles. Les diverses contributions réunies dans la première partie apportent des éléments de réflexion sur les origines sociales et la formation, les alliances et réseaux familiaux, les attitudes philosophiques et spirituelles, les liens avec le monde militaire, le barreau, le monde académique. Il fallait évo­quer leur enracinement provincial, leur place dans les conseils du gouver­nement, leur comportement politique grâce à quelques scrutins qui per­mettent au reste de décrire tendances et groupes dans le Sénat des débuts de la République. Enfin, les obsèques des sénateurs inamovibles et la mémoire qui les accompagne constituent comme le tombeau de ces « immortels » de la République. Les profils biographiques présentés ensuite trouveront sûrement l’attention de tous ceux qui s’intéressent aux élites socio-politiques de la France contemporaine. On découvre nombre de personnalités dont les débuts, non seulement professionnels mais politiques, datent de la monar­chie de Juillet, voire de la fin de la Restauration. Certaines de leurs exis­tences. et pas seulement celles des officiers de l’armée de terre ou de marine, sont marquées au coin du romanesque. Elles font revivre, comme en un éclair, l’histoire mouvementée de la France du xixe siècle, jalonnée par les révolutions, les changements de régime, les choix difficiles entre fidélité et ralliement. Ce livre éclaire une institution rarement étudiée et un personnel mal connu, qui doit tant à la France des notables, une France de propriétaires et de juristes, attachée au libéralisme.

    Description: Comme des milliers de braves des armées tricolores entre 1792 et 1815, Théophile-Malo Corret de La Tour d’Auvergne est mort au champ d’honneur. Mais « premier grenadier des armées de la République », il fit partie de ceux qui se virent décerner la qualité de héros. Réputé comme savant et admiré pour ses vertus de son vivant même, il n’était pas, c’est vrai, un soldat commun. Ce livre ne consiste pas en une biographie du célébré. Son objet est sa célébration même, depuis la Révolution française jusqu’à la Grande Guerre. Pour cela, parmi les outils fournis par les sciences sociales il manie plus spécialement celui de l’admiration. Ainsi nous comprenons pourquoi la gloire du « petit héros » La Tour d’Auvergne n’a cessé de grandir durant tout le xixe siècle. Héros célébré par la « grande patrie », comme par sa « petite patrie », et par son régiment, La Tour d’Auvergne est aussi un cas à partir duquel la construction nationale à l’œuvre peut se voir et se comprendre. Ce cas permet également de décrire le phénomène social de l’admiration, si prégnant que la société dans laquelle il se développa est ici qualifiée de « société d’admiration ». La Tour d’Auvergne est aujourd’hui bien oublié. L’ouvrage cherche donc enfin à comprendre comment et pourquoi l’admiration pour les héros s’est amoindrie, a cessé, voire a transformé certains modèles d’hier en repoussoirs à déboulonner.

    Description: « Cli-en-té-lis-me », le mot est ancien, dure et perdure. Mais de quoi parle-t-on au juste? « Je connais tel élu et il a le bras long, il pourra me trouver une place à la mairie! » Si la phrase est courante, quelles réalités et quels fantasmes recouvre-t-elle précisément ? Alors que le phénomène du clientélisme a déjà fait l’objet de plusieurs études en sociologie et sciences politiques, cette pratique originale a moins retenu l’attention des historiens du politique. Spécialiste de l’histoire politique française contemporaine, Julie Bour entend étudier les acteurs, causes, modalités et limites du clientélisme via une approche quantitative originale et inédite, reposant sur l’exploitation statistique de corpus importants de courriers de recommandation, dépassant parfois les milliers de lettres entre les élus et leurs administrés et portant sur des dossiers sensibles, symboliques ou plus prosaïques (emplois, décorations, service militaire, aide sociale, affaires communales, etc.). Elle concentre son analyse sur un espace test particulier qui est celui de la Lorraine et l’appréhende sur le temps long qui va de la IIIe République aux années 2000. Au travers d’études de cas portant sur des élus célèbres (Louis Jacquinot, Pierre Messmer, François Guillaume, Christian Pierret) ou plus anonymes (Jean Bernard, Jules Develle, André Savard) qui représentent l’ensemble des courants politiques, le clientélisme apparaît pour ce qu’il est réellement : une pratique très répandue (et non limité à un Sud méditerranéen arriéré), qui structure la vie politique locale, mobilise tout un réseau d’intercesseurs relais, crée des solidarités fines entre l’élu et les électeurs, et joue un rôle parfois déterminant dans l’élection et la longévité politique de certains parlementaires. Cette pratique, ancrée sur la durée, institutionnalisée au point d’être déculpabilisée, interroge la démocratie dans ses limites en termes de corruption et de clientélisme.

    Description: Cette recherche étudie les modalités d’approvisionnement de la ville de Venise en produits de la mer (poissons, crustacés et coquillages) au XVIIIe siècle, dans un système qui concerne à la fois des acteurs, des pratiques, des espaces et des modes de gouvernement. L’analyse prend comme point de départ les espèces, leurs lieux de croissance, les rythmes de production, puis l’exploitation du poisson qui devient une ressource alimentaire pour la ville. À Venise, l’ensemble des habitants, des patriciens aux membres du popolo les plus fragiles, consomme des produits de la mer quotidiennement et sous toutes leurs formes. Cette place remarquable du poisson dans l’alimentation a entraîné, chez les acteurs impliqués dans ce système, pêcheurs, marchands et gouvernants, d’intenses réflexions autour de la propriété, de la gestion, de l’exploitation et de la protection des espèces. L’étude se situe par conséquent à la croisée de plusieurs champs historiques (histoire environnementale, histoire sociale et histoire des institutions) et emprunte également certaines de ses approches à l’histoire économique et à l’histoire urbaine. L’enjeu est de déterminer comment se crée et se négocie un système de gestion et d’exploitation d’une ressource, impliquant des savoirs politiques, des savoirs techniques et des usages particuliers élaborés dans des milieux lagunaires et maritimes. Cette interaction est en pleine évolution au XVIIIe siècle, à une période où les mécanismes marchands et économiques sont soumis à des évolutions de conception profondes. Les ressources de la mer n’échappent pas à ces questionnements et la materia del pesce, expression utilisée par les magistrats vénitiens, devient un espace de négociation, mais également de lutte, entre les acteurs du système et les gouvernants dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle.

They accuse her of ambition unforgivable in a woman, of instigating civil war to place her sons on the throne, and of resorting to incest to maintain her hold on power. In imperial propaganda, however, Julia Domna was honored with unprecedented titles that celebrated her maternity, whether it was in the role of mother to her two sons (both future emperors) or as the metaphorical mother to the empire. Imperial propaganda even equated her to the great mother goddess, Cybele, endowing her with a public prominence well beyond that of earlier imperial women. Her visage could be found gracing everything from state-commissioned art to privately owned ivory dolls. In Maternal Megalomania, Julie Langford unmasks the maternal titles and honors of Julia Domna as a campaign on the part of the administration to garner support for Severus and his sons. Langford looks to numismatic, literary, and archaeological evidence to reconstruct the propaganda surrounding the empress. She explores how her image was tailored toward different populations, including the military, the Senate, and the people of Rome, and how these populations responded to propaganda about the empress. She employs Julia Domna as a case study to explore the creation of ideology between the emperor and its subjects.

    Description: Il y a près d’un siècle, les premières réunions de la Jeunesse ouvrière chrétienne française se tenaient à Lille. Assemblés autour d’un prêtre, de jeunes hommes s’engageaient pour rendre aux ouvriers leur fierté et leur apporter la foi. Bien vite se sont organisées des associations comparables pour les jeunes garçons et filles issus d’autres catégories sociales. Ces mouvements n’ont pas permis la rechristianisation espérée, mais ils sont devenus de formidables vecteurs d’éducation populaire ; ils ont bouleversé la vie de plusieurs générations de militants et ont formé nombre de cadres pour la société et pour l’Église. Cette dernière contrôlait et appuyait cette mobilisation des laïcs, qu’elle appelait « Action catholique spécialisée ». Mais ce terme traduit-il vraiment la diversité des expériences vécues à la base ? Et comment expliquer l’épuisement de ce dispositif si performant jusqu’aux Trente Glorieuses ? Comment ces bouleversements ont-ils été vécus ? Où les énergies et les convictions sociales, politiques et religieuses se sont-elles ensuite réinvesties ? En abordant ces questions, cet ouvrage – qui mêle les analyses scientifiques aux témoignages d’anciens militants et aumôniers – permet de mieux comprendre les profondes mutations de la société française, du militantisme et du christianisme.

Cet ouvrage comporte trois volets : l’étude du personnel, précepteurs ou gouverneurs qui ont la lourde tâche de façonner ce prince idéal, puis l’analyse des principes éducatifs et des moyens mis en œuvre, avant de décrire la « fabrication » pratique d’un prince, tant sur le plan des vertus, des savoirs que dans sa manière d’être. Une somme magistrale sur la formation des souverains, une plongée dans les coulisses de la monarchie. Où l'on découvre que, loin d’avoir été négligée, l’éducation des princes fut l’objet d’une méticulosité remarquable et constituait une véritable affaire d’État.

    Description: This book is about postcolonial memory in the Netherlands. This term refers to conflicts in contemporary society about how the colonial past should be remembered. The question is often: who has the right or ability to tell their stories and who do not? In other words: who has a voice, and who is silenced? As such, these conflicts represent a wider tendency in cultural theory and activism to use voice as a metaphor for empowerment and silence as voice’s negative counterpart, signifying powerlessness. And yet, there are voices that do not liberate us from, but rather subject us to power. Meanwhile, silence can be powerful: it can protect, disrupt and reconfigure. Throughout this book, it will become clear how voice and silence function not as each other’s opposites, but as each other’s continuation, and that postcolonial memory is articulated through the interplay of meaningful voices and meaningful silences.

    Description: The jurist and philosopher, Jeremy Bentham, and his lesser-known brother, Samuel, equally talented but as a naval architect, engineer and inventor, had a long love affair with Russia. Jeremy hoped to assist Empress Catherine II with her legislative projects. Samuel went to St Petersburg to seek his fortune in 1780 and came back with the rank of Brigadier-General and the idea, famously publicised by Jeremy, of the Inspection-House or Panopticon. The Bentham Brothers and Russia chronicles the brothers’ later involvement with the Russian Empire, when Jeremy focused his legislative hopes on Catherine’s grandson Emperor Alexander I (ruled 1801-25) and Samuel found a unique opportunity in 1806 to build a Panopticon in St Petersburg – the only panoptical building ever built by the Benthams themselves. Setting the Benthams’ projects within an in-depth portrayal of the Russian context, Roger Bartlett illuminates an important facet of their later careers and offers insight into their world view and way of thought. He also contributes towards the history of legal codification in Russia, which reached a significant peak in 1830, and towards the demythologising of the Panopticon, made notorious by Michel Foucault: the St Petersburg building, still relatively unknown, is described here in detail on the basis of archival sources. The Benthams’ interactions with Russia under Alexander I constituted a remarkable episode in Anglo-Russian relations; this book fills a significant gap in their history.

    Description: Ce livre aborde l’art funéraire du XIIIe siècle par un biais original. Il s’intéresse à la manière dont les Frères Prêcheurs et Mineurs ont traité les sépultures de papes et de cardinaux dans leur discours, à la fois littéraire et monumental, entre 1250 et 1304. L’analyse des tombes de prélats situées dans des églises mendiantes, réparties entre l’Italie et la France, révèle une intervention des frères dans les choix d’emplacement, de forme et d’iconographie. Il ressort ainsi de l’enquête que les Frères Prêcheurs ont eu une politique de leur espace davantage planifiée que les Frères Mineurs, puisqu’ils n’acceptèrent dans le chœur de leurs églises que les sépultures de prélats appartenant à l’ordre, surmontées d’une plate-tombe. De leur côté, les Frères Mineurs ont construit un discours original sur leur rôle dans l’accompagnement des mourants, à la fois dans l’iconographie et dans la littérature homilétique. Enfin, ce livre accorde une place importante aux procédés mis en œuvre par les mendiants pour « créer » des saints parmi les prélats qui étaient issus de l’ordre ou qui en étaient des bienfaiteurs.

Ce volume, qui a privilégié une démarche pluridisciplinaire, à la fois synchronique et diachronique, est composé de dix-neuf articles dont l’objectif a été de saisir le lien existant entre la justice et le récit en France, en Italie et en Espagne du XIVe siècle au XIXe siècle. L’intérêt a été prêté aux usages de la justice et de l’écriture, en passant du récit judiciaire au récit fictionnel, de l’espace privé à l’espace public, le tribunal étant l’espace où la parole se trouve finalement libérée.

    Description: In the early development of the modern Italian state, individual orphanages were a reflection of the intertwining of politics and charity.Nearly half of the children who lived in the cities of the late Italian Renaissance were under fifteen years of age. Grinding poverty, unstable families, and the death of a parent could make caring for these young children a burden. Many were abandoned, others orphaned. At a time when political rulers fashioned themselves as the "fathers" of society, these cast-off children presented a very immediate challenge and opportunity.In Bologna and Florence, government and private institutions pioneered orphanages to care for the growing number of homeless children. Nicholas Terpstra discusses the founding and management of these institutions, the procedures for placing children into them, the children's daily routine and education, and finally their departure from these homes. He explores the role of the city-state and considers why Bologna and Florence took different paths in operating the orphanages. Terpstra finds that Bologna's orphanages were better run, looked after the children more effectively, and were more successful in returning their wards to society as productive members of the city's economy. Florence's orphanages were larger and harsher, and made little attempt to reintegrate children into society.Based on extensive archival research and individual stories, Abandoned Children of the Italian Renaissance demonstrates how gender and class shaped individual orphanages in each city's network and how politics, charity, and economics intertwined in the development of the early modern state.

    Description: The Greco-Roman world is identified in the modern mind by its cities. This includes both specific places such as Athens and Rome, but also an instantly recognizable style of urbanism wrought in marble and lived in by teeming tunic-clad crowds. Selective and misleading this vision may be, but it speaks to the continuing importance these ancient cities have had in the centuries that followed and the extent to which they define the period in subsequent memory. Although there is much that is mysterious about them, the cities of the Roman Mediterranean are, for the most part, historically known. That the names and pasts of these cities remain known to us is the product of an extraordinary process of remembering and forgetting stretching back to antiquity that took place throughout the former Roman world. This volume tackles this subject of the survival and transformation of the ancient city through memory, drawing upon the methodological and theoretical lenses of memory studies and resilience theory to view the way the Greco-Roman city lived and vanished for the generations that separate the present from antiquity.This book analyzes the different ways in which urban communities of the post-Antique world have tried to understand and relate to the ancient city on their own terms, examining it as a process of forgetting as well as remembering. Many aspects of the ancient city were let go as time passed, but those elements that survived, that were actively remembered, have shaped the many understandings of what it was. In order to do so, this volume assembles specialists in multiple fields to bring their perspectives to bear on the subject through eleven case studies that range from late Antiquity to the mid-twentieth century, and from the Iberian Peninsula to Iran. Through the examination of archaeological remains, changing urban layouts and chronicles, travel guides and pamphlets, they track how the ancient city was made useful or consigned to oblivion.

Les études réunies dans ce volume, fruit de la collaboration d’historiens médiévistes et modernistes pour la plupart spécialistes de l’Italie pré-moderne, invitent ainsi le lecteur à porter la réflexion sur le terrain plus politique de l’affirmation de la souveraineté ; en allant au-delà des idées reçues sur le caractère terrifiant des rituels judiciaires, en tissant des comparaisons avec le royaume de France, du bas Moyen Âge jusqu’à la Révolution, elles montrent comment, à partir de la fin de l’époque médiévale, rituel et discours politique s’épaulent l’un l’autre et contribuent à la fabrique du consensus sur lequel repose l’acte de gouvernement. Au-delà de ces figures, l’appropriation de l’espace local, les inerties et les innovations affectant les structures familiales et le monde du travail, les modes de sociabilité ou encore les combats politiques constituent autant de prismes d’observation des migrants dans leurs espaces d’accueil. L’opposition, devenue classique, entre le « modèle » d’intégration français universaliste et le « modèle » américain aux rapports sociaux nécessairement ethnicisés, est ici réinterrogée : la comparaison met en lumière les dissemblances fondamentales en termes de contexte migratoire, de rythmes d’urbanisation et d’évolution du marché du travail, mais également les nombreuses analogies dans les processus d’insertion et d’acculturation à l’œuvre à Paris et à New York. Puisant dans les archives françaises, italiennes et américaines, ce livre nous donne à voir l’histoire du corps à corps entre les hommes et les lieux qu’ils ont investis. Dans une époque marquée au fer du nomadisme international, l’histoire de cette migration, désormais close, est un outil précieux pour comprendre l’un des phénomènes clés du monde contemporain.

As mediaeval society was dominated by the feudal caste, a biography that depicts the position, activities, manners, and thoughts of a member of that class might do much to elucidate the history of the period. This is what Sidney Painter had in mind when he wrote a William Marshal: Knight-Errant, Baron, and Regent of England. The subject has proved a peculiarly fortunate one. The fourth son of John fitz Gilbert, marshal of the king's court, William for the first forty years of his life was a landless knight who devoted most of his time and energy to tournaments. In the year 1189 by his marriage to the daughter and heiress of Earl Richard of Pembroke, William became a great feudal lord with fiefs in Normandy, England, Wales, and Ireland. Thus his biography depicts the two extremes of feudal society—the landless knight and the rich baron. Finally in 1216 he was chosen regent of England for the young king, Henry III, and his biography becomes for three years the history of England.

    Description: La léproserie Saint-Lazare, signalée pour la première fois en 1122, était située à proximité de la ville de Paris, dans le faubourg Saint-Laurent. Elle devint en 1632 le berceau de la congrégation de la Mission que saint Vincent de Paul avait fondée quelques années auparavant. D’imposants bâtiments furent alors construits pour abriter une importante communauté. La petite église gothique accolée aux nouveaux bâtiments reçut la tombe du saint fondateur, devenant un haut lieu de pèlerinage que des tableaux de grands maîtres devaient dignifier. La maison et son clos attenant, qui comptait encore 52 hectares de terres en 1789, étaient devenus un domaine préservé dans un Paris toujours plus densément peuplé. Par la suite, cet espace subit des transformations marquantes au cours des xixe et xxe siècles. Accueillant d’importants projets de lotissement dès la Restauration (Nouveau Quartier Poissonnière), ce quartier situé près de la gare du Nord fut l’objet, sous le Second Empire, de réaménagements dont James de Rothschild est le principal acteur. Transformée tour à tour en prison puis en hôpital, la maison survécut aux aléas de l’histoire jusqu’à la démolition partielle des bâtiments en 1940. Seule la nouvelle chapelle et l’infirmerie bâties par Louis-Pierre Baltard témoignent encore aujourd’hui de l’existence du clos Saint-Lazare. Une infirmerie récemment restaurée par la Ville de Paris et qui abrite depuis 2015 la médiathèque Françoise- Sagan. C’est non pas tant l’histoire de la prison pour femmes qui vit passer Louise Michel et Mata Hari que ce livre tente d’éclaircir, que celle de la maison Saint-Lazare et de son clos et, à travers elle, l’économie de la maison mère d’une des principales congrégations de la France d’Ancien Régime et son adaptation successive à différents usages.

On connaît beaucoup moins bien son devancier du xixe siècle, mal vu par ses contemporains et négligé par les historiens. Il ne correspond pourtant que peu à l’image du froid bureaucrate à laquelle on l’a souvent réduit. Si, contrairement à l’inspecteur ou au « limier » de la Sûreté, il n’a alors guère sollicité l’imaginaire, ce fonctionnaire moderne a constitué à partir de la célèbre loi de février 1800 (28 pluviôse an VIII) un rouage essentiel de la construction de l’État. Au contact de citadins de plus en plus nombreux, il a été un agent décisif de l’acculturation à la norme et à l’autorité, gérant au jour le jour les transgressions ordinaires, contribuant à l’édification d’un ordre quotidien. Homme de l’entre-deux — entre pouvoir central et pouvoir local, entre État et société, élites sociales et petit peuple urbain, politisation et professionnalisation —, il résume et accompagne bien des contradictions du siècle. Cet ouvrage collectif, dirigé par Dominique Kalifa (Paris 1) et Pierre Karila-Cohen (Rennes 2), est le premier livre entièrement consacré à ce personnage méconnu qu’il étudie en un long xixe siècle, de la Révolution à la Grande Guerre. Aussi attentif aux origines sociales des commissaires qu’à leurs itinéraires, à leurs pratiques professionnelles ou à leurs conditions de vie, il offre aussi une ample sélection de documents, pour partie inédits, qui témoignent de l’activité quotidienne de ces policiers, appelés à devenir une des figures majeures de notre contemporain.

Il analyse l’intérêt français pour la Catalogne, objet de désir face à la monarchie hispanique, et il examine la politique d’instrumentalisation menée par les représentants français, fins connaisseurs de la réalité du pays. De cette réalité ont émergé deux axes d’étude ; d’une part, les élites catalanes qui avaient construit un discours juridique et politique contraire à l’Espagne et favorable à la France et d’autre part, le destin du Roussillon qui reste sous souveraineté du roi de France en 1659 (traité des Pyrénées) mais aussi aux mains des Catalans réfugiés du Principat. En quelque sorte, nous y trouvons les éléments nécessaires pour obtenir une réponse à la question de l’opposition catalane à la France lors de la guerre de Succession d’Espagne, alors que les Catalans et la France avaient bel et bien été alliés en 1641. L’historiographie européenne s’étant beaucoup centrée sur l’Europe septentrionale de Louis XIV, cette étude veut apporter davantage de lumière sur la politique française au sud de l’Europe au prisme du cas catalan. Un territoire qui reste depuis lors à l’ordre du jour de l’agenda français jusqu’au XVIIIe siècle, et bien au-delà.

Yet, as historians and social scientists have shown, welfare has always been a ‘mixed economy’, wherein private and public actors dynamically interacted, collaborating or competing with each other in the provision of welfare services. This book will be of interest to students, scholars and practitioners of welfare by developing three innovative approaches. Firstly, it　illuminates the productive nature of public/private entanglements. Far from amounting to a zero-sum game, the interactions between the two sectors have changed over time what welfare encompasses, its contents and targets, often engendering the creation of new fields of intervention. Secondly, this book departs from a well-established tradition of comparison between Western nation-states by using and mixing various scales of analysis (local, national, international and global) and by covering case studies from Spain to Poland and France to Greece in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Thirdly, this book goes beyond state centrism in welfare studies by bringing back a host of public and private actors, from municipalities to international organizations, from older charities to modern NGOs.

Majoritairement étudiants à Paris, à Angers, et juristes de formation, ils reviennent de plus en plus dans le duché afin d’y faire carrière, en particulier avec le développement de l’État et des administrations ducale et judiciaire, au cours du xve siècle. Très polyvalents, il est fréquent qu’ils exercent deux ou trois fonctions différentes (évêque et chancelier, secrétaire et sénéchal, chanoine et médecin), auxquelles ils accèdent par toutes les techniques et ruses imaginables. Hommes de savoir, hommes de pouvoir, les plus efficaces d’entre eux veillent aussi à se garantir des revenus et un patrimoine mobilier et immobilier parfois très importants.

    Description: Despite the historical and political similarities between Portugal and Spain, the contentious responses to austerity diverged in terms of number, rhythm and players. This book compares the contentious responses to austerity in Portugal and Spain during the Eurozone crisis and the Great Recession between 2008 and 2015. While in Spain a sustained wave of mobilisation lasted for three years, involving various players and leading to a transformation of the party system, in Portugal social movements were only able to mobilise in specific instances, trade unions dominated protest and, by the end of the cycle, institutional change was limited. Contesting Austerity shows that the different trajectories and outcomes in these two countries are connected to the nature and configurations of the players in the mobilisation process. While in Spain actors’ relative autonomy from one another led to deeper political transformation, in Portugal the dominance of the institutional actors limited the extent of that change.

    Description: Les fidéicommis étaient consubstantiels aux sociétés d’Ancien Régime. En rendant les biens indisponibles et en fixant la ligne de succession, ces fondations testamentaires visaient la conservation de l’assise matérielle des familles. Au nom de la libre circulation des biens et d’une conception absolue de la propriété, ils furent au XVIIIe siècle l’objet de critiques qui débouchèrent sur des réformes dans certains États italiens. Rien de tel dans la République de Venise où le patriciat n’envisagea jamais de réformes systémiques qui risquaient de remettre en cause les équilibres politiques et sociaux. Néanmoins, dès la fin du XVe siècle, l’État vénitien légiféra à mesure que les fidéicommis entraient en contradiction avec d’autres systèmes normatifs : le recouvrement des créances et des impôts et le remboursement des dots. L’État définit également les conditions de levée de l’inaliénabilité des biens et mit en place, sous l’égide des Juges du Procurator, une procédure pour garantir le réinvestissement des capitaux assujettis à fidéicommis (emprunts publics et prêts) au prix d’un travail administratif considérable. L’exploitation des archives de cette cour permet d’éclairer le rôle de l’autorité judiciaire dans la cogestion des fidéicommis et celui des ayants droit qui pouvaient se comporter en administrateurs actifs, capables de remodeler le contenu du fidéicommis sans changer sa valeur. En scrutant les modalités du passage de l’indisponible au disponible, ce livre interroge l’élasticité d’un dispositif réputé pour sa rigidité ; il démontre aussi que les fidéicommis étaient une institution totalisante dont le gouvernement était autant une affaire de famille que l’affaire de l’État.

    Description: De 1872 à 1876, l’Espagne est déchirée par une guerre civile opposant les libéraux au pouvoir aux carlistes, partisans du prétendant don Carlos de Bourbon, défenseurs du trône et de l’autel. Loin de se cantonner à la péninsule Ibérique, le conflit dépasse les frontières et le carlisme bénéficie d’un vaste mouvement de solidarité européen de la part des catholiques et des royalistes. Des ports de l’Atlantique et de la mer du Nord aux sentiers de contrebande des Pyrénées, des salons de l’aristocratie européenne aux réseaux d’anciens combattants pour la papauté, c’est un mouvement protéiforme et informel qui s’organise à différentes échelles et au sein de différents espaces sociaux. Le présent ouvrage l’étudie en croisant les apports de la micro-histoire, de l’histoire par le bas, de l’histoire transnationale et de l’histoire politique. Le terrain d’enquête est principalement la France, que le voisinage avec l’Espagne érige en tête de pont de cette internationale blanche : le territoire français devient lieu de refuge, d’organisation et de solidarité transnationale pour les carlistes, malgré l’opposition du gouvernement. Agissant dans l’illégalité, l’internationale blanche apporte une aide décisive à l’insurrection dans la guerre civile. C’est surtout vrai à la frontière entre France et Espagne, en Catalogne et au Pays basque, où les royalistes reçoivent le soutien de populations frontalières dont les cadres de vie traditionnels sont menacés par l’émergence de l’État moderne et du capitalisme. Ce livre présente et analyse ainsi un « envers de l’histoire contemporaine », le combat transnational de défenseurs d’un futur alternatif à la modernité libérale.

    Description: The Byzantine civilisation has left a lasting mark on individuals and societies of South-Eastern Europe. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453 it lost the frame, the Byzantine Empire, in which it had flourished for more than a millennium. Although restrained by a new power, the Ottoman Empire, Byzantine legacies never disappeared but survived in memories and traditions, in history and faith, in formal or informal institutions. And when peoples formerly included in the Byzantine Empire or subject to its influence established themselves as nations, when they started writing their past and considered what could be their European fate – from the Enlightenment, but especially in the 19th and 20th centuries – Byzantium was naturally reconsidered, reassessed, reinvented. The aim of this collective book is to study in a comparative manner, thanks to scholars of all countries, the history of the memory of Byzantium in South-Eastern Europe. A conclusion emerges: neither a nostalgia nor a curiosity, Byzantium appears as one of the foundations of modern Europe.
