    Beschreibung: Scepticism is a philosophical current in which doubt is neither a discomfort to be overcome, nor an artifice located at the beginning of an investigation aiming at its own overcoming, but a way of speaking and of standing in existence. What does such a position imply on the anthropological level? That contrary to those who have thought of doubt as a preparation for faith or for the refoundation of science, it is more natural to doubt than to believe? The chapters in this volume examine how modern sceptical doubt, born of its implementation in Montaigne's Essays, far from being a negative disposition of mind that leads to despair, has contributed to revalorizing opinion and belief in a regime of uncertainty, to rehabilitating the imagination and the senses, while promoting other uses of reason. The book is aimed at all readers who are interested in the renewal of the conception of philosophy through doubt, whether it be its discursive practices or its values. It also invites us to reflect on the link between the philosophical discourse on humanity and the human sciences, a link that the sceptical substitution of an anthropology of the relation to the metaphysical approach to humanity has made possible.

    Beschreibung: In the continuous search for sustainability, the exchange of diverse perspectives, assumptions, and values is indispensable to environmental protection. Through anthropological and ethnographic analyses, this collection addresses how interests, values, and ideologies affect dialogue and sustainability work. Drawing on studies from three continents – Europe, North America, and South America – the paradoxes and the plurality of meanings associated with the creation of sustainable futures are explored. The book focuses on how communication practices collide with organizational frameworks, customary practices, livelihoods, and landscape. In so doing, the authors explore the meanings of environmental communication, pushing beyond environmental advocacy rhetoric to emphasize stronger anthropological engagement within communities to achieve more impactful environmental communication practice. Empirically the book’s chapters explore a diverse set of issues, ranging from coastal management in the European north to Native American place naming in Alaska. They further share findings from studies of contaminated land remediation in Sweden, conflicts over water resources in Chile, management of heritage and national parks in Northern Arizona, and cultural transmission in Slovakia. This is an open access book.

    Beschreibung: Edward Sapir is undoubtedly one of the most important anthropologists of the early 20th century. Long before the development of structural anthropology, Sapir formulated the philosophy of structuralism and laid the foundations of a general science of behaviour. Because the individual and society, culture and personality are inseparable, Sapir founded a method at the crossroads of ethnology and linguistics which, combining the concepts and methods of ethnology and psychoanalysis, appears today as a prophetic programme of the tasks incumbent on anthropology. This specialist in Amerindian languages and cultures did not write any comprehensive work during his lifetime, with the exception of a volume on language and a series of monographs on North American Indian languages and cultures. His work is scattered in numerous articles published between 1917 and 1938 some of which were compiled by David Mandelbaum in 1949 under the title Selected Writings of Edward Sapir in Language, Culture and Personality. A selection was also translated into French by Christian Baudelot and Pierre Clinquart, published in two volumes by Éditions de Minuit in 1967. The volume we are offering today, exclusively in digital format, is the re-edition of this French selection presented in the Minuit edition by Christian Baudelot. Our edition offers a translation which has been entirely reread, corrected and annotated by Pierre Clinquart, and augmented by an unpublished preface by the anthropologist Francis Zimmermann.

Lorsque la philosophie, au XVIIe siècle, entérine sous le nom d’esthétique la nécessité de prendre l’art explicitement pour objet, elle achoppe immédiatement sur le problème du goût, sur l’éventuelle contingence historique de la réception du beau. Réfléchir sur l’art, dans la constitution de son histoire, implique donc de prendre en compte la diversité des usages de l’esthétique, y compris pour la philosophie elle-même. La civilisation esthétique a constitué l’art comme sphère autonome, celui-ci réclame une philosophie qui échappe aux déterminations sociologiques et conceptualise l’effet matériel des œuvres.

    Beschreibung: Gender difference is a fundamental philosophical and medical question in the Early Modern period, a question often avoided by the history of philosophy. There are essentially two opposing schools of thought on this matter: those who follow in the lineage of Descartes, and those who align themselves with Cureau de la Chambre. Their study of the human condition primarily explores the interactions between body and mind, but more importantly, they highlight the body's unique thoughts through the lens of the imagination. It is the body that decides whether women and men are equal. Critical readings of these two approaches, proposed on the one hand by Malebranche and on the other by Poulain de la Barre, confirm that the 17th century was a turning point in the study of psycho-physiology and morality. The confrontation between these four philosophers allows us to understand the origins of the theoretical perspectives on sex and gender that still hold sway today: that of egalitarianism on the one hand, and that of a gender differentialism that can be either inegalitarian or egalitarian.
