Description: How can we understand the philosophy of linguistics by taking the discipline’s actual theoretical pluralism as our starting point? By what criteria can grammatical research be assessed if we abandon a competitive model of theorising? Through an investigation of different areas of linguistics, this book brings to light certain hermeneutic properties of linguistic theorisation which are currently poorly understood and sometimes not even yet noticed. As a complement to these investigations, the book analyses a number of questions that arise in the “ideological” criticism of contemporary linguistics, examining the discipline’s theoretical activity in light of the socio-ideological realities on which it depends, sometimes unwittingly. Uniting two approaches to linguistics that are rarely brought into dialogue, the book opens up the possibility of an alternative understanding of the complexity of the particular textual objects that are grammatical theories.

Description: Instruments constitute a classic member of the thematic role inventory, yet they are usually analyzed only peripherally, taking a back seat to the more studied members such as Agent and Patient. This dissertation investigates the semantic reality behind the label instrument from the functionalist perspective of Role & Reference Grammar. Starting from a theoretical investigation of what instrumentality truly means when contrasted with related concepts like comitatives, this book explores the morphosyntactic realization of instruments across a wide range of typologically diverse languages. Apart from the standard occurrences of instruments that come to mind from languages such as Latin, German or English, this book delves into several less common constructions that feature the instrument relation. Such constructions include, amongst others, passives with instruments and particularly the Instrument-Subject Alternation, a construction where the instrument seemingly appears as the subject of the sentence. This construction displays variation along three dimensions: 1) The instrument can vary from a very simple tool to a complicated machine, 2) the predicate can vary substantially and 3) languages differ widely with respect to the construction’s acceptability. This makes for a complex playing field where the animacy of the instrument but also the aktionsart class of the predicate play a major role. The last section of this book deals with linking the semantics of instruments and related concepts to their morphosyntactic realizations, including the various encoding strategies that are available in any given language. This book also features a concise introduction to Role & Reference Grammar. Dissertations in Language and Cognition: This series explores issues of mental representation, linguistic structure and representation, and their interplay. The research presented in this series is grounded in the idea explored in the Collaborative Research Center ‘The structure of representations in language, cognition and science’ (SFB 991) that there is a universal format for the representation of linguistic and cognitive concepts.

Description: “Everything in the feeling of speakers is a real phenomenon,” wrote Saussure in the 1880s for the purpose of a prospective morphology course. But the term feeling is not one of those which, like sign, system, synchrony and diachrony, is associated with the canon of Saussure's concepts. The purpose of this work is to illustrate, on the contrary, that linguistic feeling is essential to the Geneva linguist’s reasoning, and that it is perhaps the central focus which enables him to define what he calls “language”. The contributions in this work investigate what can be called Saussure's linguistic feeling, by exploring the inspirations which Saussure may have picked up from his predecessors, by studying the various inflections which the motif embraces in his texts, particularly from manuscript sources, and by exploring the issues of the notion today. As it is rooted in the sphere of the history of linguistic ideas, it also has the potential to open up new avenues for research on the apprehension of linguistic facts by the speaker.

The series ‘Proceedings in Language and Cognition’ explores issues of mental representation, linguistic structure and representation, and their interplay. The research presented in this series is grounded in the idea explored in the Collaborative Research Center ‘The structure of representations in language, cognition and science’ (SFB 991) that there is a universal format for the representation of linguistic and cognitive concepts.

Description: The articles in this volume are the outcome of the successful BRIDGE Workshop held in Düsseldorf in 2014. The workshop gathered a number of distinguished researchers from formal semantics and conceptual semantics and aimed to initiate a deeper conversation and collaboration instead of separating the two sides as competing views. The workshop provided a platform to further discuss parallelisms on specific semantic issues on the one hand and on the other hand to confront opposed claims from the two different perspectives. This volume represents a selected number of high-quality papers presented at the workshop featuring various approaches to meaning from linguistics, logic and philosophy of language. This series explores issues of mental representation, linguistic structure and representation, and their interplay. The research presented in this series is grounded in the idea explored in the Collaborative Research Center ‘The structure of representations in language, cognition and science’ (SFB 991) that there is a universal format for the representation of linguistic and cognitive concepts.

Description: This volume contains selected papers of the 2008 annual conference of the German Association for Social Science Research on Japan (Vereinigung für sozialwissenschaftliche Japanforschung e.V. – VSJF). The academic meeting has addressed the issue of demographic change in Japan in comparison to the social developments of ageing in Germany and other member states of the European Union. The conference was organized by the Institute for Modern Japanese Studies at Heinrich-Heine-University of Duesseldorf and took place at the Mutter Haus in Kaiserswerth (an ancient part of Duesseldorf). Speakers from Germany, England, Japan and the Netherlands presented their papers in four sessions on the topics “Demographic Trends and Social Analysis”, “Family and Welfare Policies”, “Ageing Society and the Organization of Households” and “Demographic Change and the Economy”. Central to all transnational and national studies on demographic change is the question of how societies can be reconstructed and be made adaptive to these changes in order to survive as solidarity communities. The authors of this volume attend to this question by discussing on recent trends of social and economic restructuring and giving insight into new research developments such as in the area of households and housing, family care work, medical insurance, robot technology or the employment sector.
