The innovative combination of linguistics, history, and cartography makes a wealth of hard-to-reach knowledge readily available to both specialist and general readers. It combines information on languages, dialects, alphabets, religions, mass violence, or migrations over an extended period of time. The story first focuses on Central Europe’s dialect continua, the emergence of states, and the spread of writing technology from the tenth century onward. Most maps concentrate on the last two centuries. The main storyline opens with the emergence of the Western European concept of the nation, in accord with which the ethnolinguistic nation-states of Italy and Germany were founded. In the Central European view, a “proper” nation is none other than the speech community of a single language. The Atlas aspires to help users make the intellectual leap of perceiving languages as products of human history and part of culture. Like states, nations, universities, towns, associations, art, beauty, religions, injustice, or atheism—languages are artefacts invented and shaped by individuals and their groups.

    Description: Henri Hours' book on the end of the League in Lyon is one of the most important works of 16th century historiography in Lyon, although very few readers have had the opportunity to consult it. This is its main paradox and the challenge of this edition. The thesis was defended at the École Nationale des Chartes in 1951, but it has never been published and, in accordance with the rules of the École, it has never been made available. Only those who knew the author were able to read it, which does not prevent it from appearing in all bibliographies concerning the Wars of Religion. Following his death in 2017 and with the agreement of his family, the Collection Chrétiens & Sociétés has decided to publish this memoir for the first time in order to make it accessible to the public in Lyon and to historians of religious confrontations. Henri Hours meticulously analysed the last years of the League at Lyon, the crucial years 1593-1597. Since 1589, the city had swayed to the side of Catholic intransigence to the point of rejecting its sovereign, Henry IV, and maintaining a costly but necessary war effort in a region crossed by denominational borders. The bishop, Pierre d'Epinac, the consuls of Lyon, the governor of the city, the Savoyard and Spanish spies, but also the street preachers and the little people who were very inclined to be alarmed, were the main actors in these events. Here we touch on the political and religious dimensions of urban history. Through municipal deliberations, correspondence, pamphleteering and some contemporary accounts, Henri Hours unravels the skein of the city's political shift towards submission to the king. By looking back at the writings of some of these actors, notably Pierre Mathieu and Claude de Rubys, he also questions the memory of the event in the consciousness of Lyon.

    Description: Les auteurs de cet ouvrage “ Pierre et Archéologie ”, issu du Colloque international qui s’est tenu à Tautavel (14-15 mai 1998) veulent attirer l’attention sur les nombreux aspects de l’utilisation de la pierre par l’Homme depuis la Préhistoire, et les difficultés pour comprendre et expliquer son identification, son évolution et sa conservation. Mise à part l’utilisation lointaine de la pierre par l’homme préhistorique pour assurer sa survie, il reste le domaine très vaste, plus récent dans le temps, de la pierre de taille utilisée par les hommes. Déjà les gallo-romains se sont servis des pierres dites « du midi » pour des constructions que nous connaissons bien. Mais la pierre n’est pas réservée seulement aux monuments, elle fait partie de la vie quotidienne. En dehors des grands édifices, de nombreuses habitations sont bâties en pierre et souvent leur sol est pavé de pierres. Il y a aussi l’amour de la pierre tout simplement, pour le beau, le toucher : c’est par exemple la sculpture qui agrémente les monuments et même les habitations. Les sarcophages en marbre blanc, sculptés entre la fin de l’Antiquité classique et le Haut Moyen-Age, dont le problème de l’origine est traité dans cet ouvrage, montrent bien la diversité des aspects artistiques que l’Homme a su exploiter. L’ensemble des contributions présentées apporte des données originales sur les méthodes et techniques modernes utilisées pour contribuer à mieux comprendre l’évolution culturelle et artistique de l’humanité, le devenir de la pierre extraite et la restauration des monuments. Ceci montre une fois de plus la nécessité d’une recherche pluridisciplinaire, seule démarche pour assurer la protection et la pérennité de tout ce qui touche notre patrimoine.

At the same time, researchers are questioning what the North is, its conceptualisation, its cultural implications, its geographical characteristics, its social and political challenges. This volume is part of the current debate on the Nordic imaginary based on a notion, Nordicity, which intersects with borealism. Plural and mobile, the North inspires both scriptural and figurative production based on desire, dream, fascination or fantasy. The real, tangible and contingent North is only the apparent surface of a manufactured and invented North. How can we express northernness today? Is a theory of the North possible? This volume attempts to answer these questions by bringing together contributions from researchers in Nordic studies, literature, linguistics and the humanities: each is given the opportunity to define his own conception of Nordicity. Ces dernières années, à travers romans et sériés télévisées ("Vikings", "Millennium", "Borgen" ou "Occupied"), la culture nordique a gagné en visibilité internationale. Simultanément, les chercheurs s'interrogent sur ce qu’est le Nord, sa conceptualisation, ses implications culturelles, ses caractéristiques géographiques, ses enjeux sociaux et politiques. Ce volume s’insère dans le débat actuel sur l’imaginaire nordique à partir d’une notion – la nordicité – qui interagit tout particulièrement avec le boréalisme.     Description: This volume provides the first account of the pioneering efforts at sex reform in America from the Gilded Age to the Progressive era. Despite the atmosphere of extreme prudery and the existence of the Comstock laws after the Civil War, a group of radicals emerged to attack conventional beliefs about sex, from traditional marriage to women’s chattel status in society. These men and women had in common a direct, unrespectable, iconoclastic style. They put forth outrageous journalism and had a penchant for martyrdom and for using the courts to publicize their ideologies.From rare and generally unknown sources, Hal D. Sears pieced together the story of the sex radicals and their surprising ideas. Moses Harman, a minister turned abolitionist and freethinker, is a central figure in the narrative. His Lucifer, the Light Bearer, the only journal of sexual liberty published from the early 1880s to 1907, was dedicated to free love, sex education, women’s rights, and related causes. To a great degree Harman’s publication defines the limits of social dissent in the late nineteenth century.Other members of the sex radical circle included E. B. Foote, a medical doctor who made a fortune with a home medical book crammed with sex information; Edwin Walker and Lillian Harman, who became a cause célèbre among radicals when their jailhouse honeymoon in Kansas challenged the right of the state to regulate marriage; Elmina Slenker, who promoted a theory of sexual energy sublimation and the idea that women were the superior sex; and Lois Waisbrooker, Dora Forster, Lillie White, and other feminists who, almost a century ago, taught and preached the very ideas we hear today in the women’s movement.Of course, all these people got into trouble with the law, mostly through the machinations of their archvillain, Anthony Comstock. Sears examines Comstock’s powers of postal censorship and describes Comstock’s personal vendettas against sexual dissenters, particularly the free love philosopher Ezra Heywood. He gives a legal history of obscenity and explains the sex radicals’ significance in the emergence of obscenity law.Although the sex radicals attest the important reform vitality of provincial culture in late nineteenthcentury America, until now they have been almost ignored by historians. Those who have studied sex radicalism at all, apart from its communitarian and sectarian aspects, have viewed it merely as a subsidiary of the more respectable feminist movement. In this book Sears gives careful consideration to the links between sex radicalism and spiritualism, feminism, anticlericalism, anarchism, and the freethought movement. He presents sex radicalism as a separate and unique movement which illuminates new reaches of the Victorian landscape and establishes a tradition for presentday liberation trends.

    Description: This third volume of Argentine-Chilean binational studies continues and deepens the inquiries about the construction of social meanings in the territory called Araucanía-Norpatagonia. Again, the starting point is the plurality of a territory of diffuse and artificial limits, a plurality that is evidenced in the dialogue, the different perspectives of approach, the polysemy and the tensions behind concepts and representations observed through a particular epistemological gaze and necessary for a territory of late integration such as that of the Chilean-Argentine Patagonia. In this case, the book is organized in three axes. The first, "Disputed territorial constructions", includes works that analyze, from different disciplinary points of view, the tensions that run through the production of meanings about the territory. The second is "Neoliberalism and commodification of nature" and brings together studies that focus on the different forms and open scenarios of dispute for the appropriation of land, water and biodiversity within the framework of the historical cycle that began with the conservative reaction of the late 1970s. Finally, the third axis "New approaches to thinking about a binational territory" contains articles that, also from different perspectives and problems, share the concern to carry out conceptual and methodological reflections to contribute to drawing future studies from a binational perspective.

Relating political activity to constitutional thought, William M. Wiecek surveys the antislavery societies, the ideas of their individual members, and the actions of those opposed to slavery and its expansion into the territories. He shows that the idea of constitutionalism has popular origins and was not the exclusive creation of a caste of lawyers.     Description: Lucius Polk Brown was a professional chemist who became a bureaucrat in the field of public health during the Progressive era, when middleclass reformers first attempted to order American society through integrated systems. In his native state of Tennessee, between 1908 and 1915 Brown created a public health enforcement agency, began educating the masses to public health needs, waged flamboyant campaigns against those who violated the laws, and attracted widespread support for pure food and drug control. Moving on to become director of the Bureau of Food and Drugs in the New York City Department of Health in 1915, he continued his battle for public health reform amidst the maze of government agencies and political power struggles surrounding Tammany Hall.In Many respects Brown was typical of Progressive reformers. A middleclass, AngloSaxon Protestant and a professional, he represented a link between the nineteenthcentury agrarian and the twentiethcentury urbanite. More importantly, Brown exemplified a new character on the American scene: a scientist out of the agriculturalexperimentstation mold entering public life, ready to challenge politicians on their own ground.This book contains fresh insights on the history of the public health movement in America, one area of reform that has not received the attention it deserves. Except for incidental references, the major figures of food and drug regulation at the local level have been largely ignored by historians. Lucius Polk Brown’s quest for pure food and drugs is representative of what municipal and state officials, as scientific people, encountered when they fought for the passage of new laws, struggled to enforce existing ones, and battled with the politicians, quacks, ignorance that threatened their efforts.Brown’s diversified career provides a unique opportunity for studying a scientific reformer caught up in the political turmoil of the Progressive era. Focusing on a set of Jewish communities, Robert Chazan tells how, by the eleventh century, French Jews had created for themselves a role as local merchants and moneylenders in adapting to the political, economic, and social limits imposed on them. French society, striving to become more powerful and civilized, was willing to extend aid and protection to the Jews in return for general stimulation of trade and urban life and for the immediate profit realized from taxation. While the authorities were relatively successful in protecting the Jews from others, there was no power to impose itself between the Jews and their protectors. The political and social well-being of the Jews was, therefore, dependent on the will of the governing authorities who taxed their holdings and regulated their activities. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the position of the Jews was constantly under attack by reform elements in the church concerned with Jewish moneylending and blasphemous materials in Jewish books; these reformers were eventually devoted to a serious missionizing effort within the Jewish community. The Jews' situation was further complicated by deep popular animosity, expressing itself in a damaging set of slanders and occasionally in physical violence. Despite the impressive achievements of the Jews in medieval northern France, by the thirteenth century their community was increasingly constricted; and in 1306, they were expelled from royal France by Philip IV. Overcoming the handicap of a lack of copious source material, Chazan analyzes the Jews' political status, their relations with key elements of Christian society, their demographic development, their economic outlets, their internal organization, and their attitudes toward the Christian environment. As it highlights aspects of French society from an unusual perspective, Medieval Jewry in Northern France should be of special interest to the historian of medieval France as well as to the student of Jewish history. This story is also significant for all who are fascinated by the capacity of human groups to respond and adapt creatively to a hostile and limiting environment.

While missionaries were successful in pacifying many Indians, the Seris—independent groups of hunter-gatherers who lived on the desert shores and islands of the Gulf of California—steadfastly defied Spanish efforts to subjugate them. Empire of Sand is a documentary history of Spanish attempts to convert, control, and ultimately annihilate the Seris. These papers of religious, military, and government officials attest to the Seris’ resilience in the face of numerous Spanish attempts to conquer them and remove them from their lands. The documents include early observations of the Seris by Jesuit missionaries, descriptions of the collapse of the Seri mission system in 1748, accounts of the invasion of Tiburón Island in 1750 and the Sonora Expedition of 1767–71, and reports of late eighteenth-century Seri hostilities. Thomas E. Sheridan’s introduction puts the documents in perspective, while his notes objectively clarify their significance.     Description: The Eve of Spain demonstrates how the telling and retelling of one of Spain’s founding myths played a central role in the formation of that country’s national identity. King Roderigo, the last Visigoth king of Spain, rapes (or possibly seduces) La Cava, the daughter of his friend and counselor, Count Julian. In revenge, the count travels to North Africa and conspires with its Berber rulers to send an invading army into Spain. So begins the Muslim conquest and the end of Visigothic rule. A few years later, in Northern Spain, Pelayo initiates a Christian resistance and starts a new line of kings to which the present-day Spanish monarchy traces its roots.Patricia E. Grieve follows the evolution of this story from the Middle Ages into the modern era, as shifts in religious tolerance and cultural acceptance influenced its retelling. She explains how increasing anti-Semitism came to be woven into the tale during the Christian conquest of the peninsula—in the form of traitorous Jewish conspirators. In the sixteenth century, the tale was linked to the looming threat of the Ottoman Turks. Ce vocable quelque peu inattendu désignait la prestation de service que rendirent, de la fin du XVIIe au début du XIXe siècle, les marins européens aux sujets de l’Empire ottoman. Ils assuraient la plupart des liaisons maritimes pour cette immense construction politique à peu près dépourvue de navires de commerce, bien que bordant la majeure partie du littoral méditerranéen. Après avoir exposé les conditions juridiques qui ont encouragé ce type d’association temporaire, Daniel Panzac présente les marins, la pratique quotidienne de la caravane, avant d’évoquer ensuite les affréteurs ottomans. C’est principalement à travers leurs différends que se révèlent les éphémères relations de ces hommes et leur façon de surmonter leur méfiance et leurs préjugés. Ce faisceau dense de liaisons maritimes favorisa la constitution d’un ensemble économique, une « économie-monde », facteur essentiel de cohésion de cet État aussi vaste qu’hétérogène que fut l’Empire ottoman, ensemble dont l’effondrement dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle précéda l’éclatement politique.

Ajoutons les nouveautés scénographiques et le succès international de cette pièce, imitée par Thomas Shadwell en Angleterre, pour accroître l’intérêt de cette édition.

    Description: La famille constitue depuis longtemps un objet d’étude privilégié des historiens des sociétés. Ayant abandonné l’attention presque exclusive accordée autre­fois aux seuls lignages aristocratiques voire royaux, cette histoire de la famille a connu depuis un demi-siècle de profonds renouvellements, tant thématiques que méthodologiques. Directement impliquée dans l’histoire quantitative, notamment par le biais de la « reconstruction des familles », la thématique familiale s’est retrouvée au centre de l’histoire des mentalités. Ultérieurement enfin, via l’importation de problématiques venues des autres sciences sociales et le recours à la démarche « micro-historique », la famille s’est muée en un espace social et anthropologique au sein duquel sont mises à jours les dynamiques qui affectent ces réalités familiales. Dans le même temps, ces réflexions sur le passé d’une réalité sociale toujours vivante viennent en écho aux interrogations contemporaines sur le devenir de la famille nucléaire. La « crise » d’un modèle familial pluriséculaire et les recompositions familiales auxquelles elles donnent lieu placent ces réflexions sur la famille au cœur d’un débat de société particulièrement intense. Dans ce contexte qui fait de la famille un sujet d’actualité brûlant, le colloque organisé à Toulouse a voulu dresser un bilan des travaux les plus récents des meilleurs spécialistes du sujet, il s’est inscrit dans une démarche délibérément comparatiste tout en insistant sur les continuités et les ruptures identifiables tant en termes de problématiques, de démarches que de résultats. Compte tenu de la spécificité du laboratoire à l’origine de cette réflexion, le comparatisme concerne essentiellement les espaces français et ibérique, ce dernier étant compris au sens large puisqu’il intègre les sociétés coloniales ibéro-américaines. Dans le même temps, ce colloque a fait le choix de la transdisciplinarité et de la longue durée, depuis le bas Moyen-Âge jusqu’au xxe siècle. Cette longue phase chronologique coïncide avec l’émergence puis le développement de la structure nucléaire, modèle familial précisément en cours de redéfinition aujourd’hui. À son propos, leurs auteurs y confrontent des approches historiques, sociologiques, anthropologiques et juridiques qui toutes éclairent les complexités de cette histoire tout en contextualisant les interroga­tions contemporaines.

Uno de los principales temas que se tratan en esta obra es el conjunto de repercusiones que acarreó la Gran Depresión estadunidense sobre las economías latinoamericanas. En particular, se muestra que al tiempo que cayeron las exportaciones de México, se dinamizaron los mercados internos y se sentaron así las bases para la acumulación de capital productivo en el país. Sin embargo, al no existir políticas macroeconómicas claramente definidas por parte de los gobiernos posrevolucionarios, el crecimiento industrial fue en gran medida desordenado y produjo efectos nocivos a largo plazo en el entero ámbito económico. Así, aunque este libro aborda sobre todo el periodo que va de fines de los años veinte a 1940, presenta un modelo que permite comprender de una forma novedosa la situación de la economía mexicana prevaleciente en la actualidad.

Craig examines the careers of two prominent American public figures, Newton Diehl Baker and William Gibbs McAdoo, whose lives spanned the era between the Civil War and World War II.Both Baker and McAdoo migrated from the South to northern industrial cities and took up professions that had nothing to do with staple-crop agriculture. Both eventually became cabinet officers in the presidential administration of another southerner with personal memories of defeat and Reconstruction: Woodrow Wilson. A Georgian who practiced law and led railroad tunnel construction efforts in New York City, McAdoo served as treasury secretary at a time when Congress passed an income tax, established the Federal Reserve System, and funded the American and Allied war efforts in World War I. Born in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, Baker won election as mayor of Cleveland in the early twentieth century and then, as Wilson's secretary of war, supervised the dramatic build-up of the U.S. military when the country entered the Great War in Europe.This is the first full biography of McAdoo and the first since 1961 of Baker. Le phénomène existe pourtant sous différentes formes selon les sociétés dans lesquelles il est rencontré et pensé. En France, au xixe siècle, l’inceste a une histoire. Lorsqu’en 1791 les Constituants décident de le décriminaliser, la société française voit s’ouvrir un siècle de débats qui conduit à une requalification profonde du phénomène et de son imaginaire. L’étude croisée des discours entretenus par les élites souligne les étapes qui ont présidé à la construction de l’inceste criminel. À la fin du siècle, il n’est plus l’apanage des aristocrates décriés par les Lumières mais bien celui d’hommes pauvres, devenus les symboles d’une nouvelle dangerosité. La justice, par l’entrelacement de ses échelles et de ses acteurs, contribue également à fabriquer et à imposer progressivement ce masque sur le phénomène incestueux. Mais l’inceste n’est pas qu’un crime au xixe siècle. En tentant de pénétrer au cœur même des familles, cet ouvrage montre qu’il peut également être une sexualité consentie qui se pratique dans la clandestinité de certains foyers français. Réalité multiforme, interdit plus que tabou, l’inceste mérite en ce sens d’être replacé dans une histoire plus courte que l’intemporalité des anthropologues.

Ese es el tema central de este volumen, que reúne artículos derivados de investigaciones originales en torno al fenómeno. El primer eje temático se refiere a los crímenes de odio que desde hace más de un decenio han dejado una huella indeleble en Ciudad Juárez. En un segundo apartado se incluyen dos textos sobre el maltrato a las mujeres embarazadas y la atención que reciben en los espacios de salud. Posteriormente se aborda la violencia en contextos rurales desde dos ángulos específicos: la perspectiva de la medicina tradicional y la experiencia migratoria transnacional. La violencia tiene muchas aristas y cada experiencia concreta se redefine por múltiples factores. A veces el maltrato se torna difícil de describir e incluso de identificar y aun las víctimas pueden tardar años en nombrarlo como tal y actuar en consecuencia. El maltrato psicológico y la agresión sexual, principalmente si esta última es sufrida en la infancia, se ubican en este rubro. Ese es el cuarto eje temático del volumen. Finalmente, se analiza la relación derecho y violencia, tanto desde una perspectiva teórica como con énfasis en la interacción de la norma escrita y la costumbre jurídica. El último apartado del libro está destinado al análisis de la lucha contra la violencia, desde los primeros esfuerzos por romper un silencio arcaico hasta la conquista de un espacio en las agendas públicas.

    Description: La Estoria de España, written under the aegis of Alfonso X the Wise, King of Castile and León (1252-1284), traces the history of the Iberian Peninsula and more specifically of Castile, from its origins to the 13th century. While many renowned researchers have studied the Estoria, all of this work, which is also essential, only offers a partial view of the first part of the chronicle. No comprehensive study has in fact been devoted to the story of the origins. However, in order to measure the richness and complexity of peninsular history, it is necessary to take into account this large time interval between the beginnings of humanity and the year 711. The domination of the Greeks, the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Barbarians and the Visigoths, the collapse of the Kingdom of Toledo and the beginnings of the Kingdom of Asturias do indeed constitute a story of the origins. The author of the book therefore starts from the premise that the first 565 chapters of the Estoria cannot be considered as a mere preliminary without any political significance. Several questions are thus at the origin of this work: how do the new challenges of the 13th century (expansion of the borders of the kingdom, fecho del Imperio, new political conceptions, opposition of the nobility and the clergy, monopolization of writing by the king…) influence the conception of Spain's past? How does the Wise King found the greatness of the Iberian Peninsula, how does he legitimize its foundations and how does he define the exercise of royal power? The analysis of the different episodes, of the numerous portraits, of the relationships between the characters, as well as of the writing processes makes it possible to bring to light the textual and ideological originality of this part of the chronicle and the links between the Estoria and the Alphonsine ideal defended in the other works of the Wise King. Unraveling the biblical, ancient and medieval structures and topics used by the Wise King, the author reveals the different networks of symbolic, political, sapiential and spiritual transmission that are at work in the story and thus highlights the way in which the sovereign, by celebrating a common territory and past, guarantors of Hispanic identity, develops a myth of national creation; which allows Soizic Escurignan to conclude that the story of the origins is meant to be programmatic, and more than that, performative.

Situated on the edge of cultural and art history, this study aims to open up new perspectives on artistic creation during the Baroque period in Latin America. Lorsqu’un conquérant conscient de sa supériorité colonise un territoire, il ne se sert pas seulement de la puissance des armes et des techniques. Il importe et impose aussi un système de normes, de croyances et des formes d’expression artistique pour asseoir un projet politique qui lui semble d’entrée de jeu légitime. Située aux confins de l’histoire culturelle et de l’histoire des arts, cette étude s’efforce d’ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives sur la création artistique à l’époque baroque dans une Amérique Latine en voie de colonisation par les Européens, en analysant plus particulièrement le contexte d’apparition du syncrétisme religieux.     Description: Through his literary, historical and political oeuvre, Safvet-beg Bašagić (1870-1934) has formulated the great issues of bosnian-muslim nationalism, at a time when his community retreated from the demands placed upon it by the process of modernisation imposed by the austro-hungarian presence since the Berlin Congres of 1878. Inspired by ottoman, croat and serb nationalist movements of the 19th century, he attempted to establish an identity that was distinct from those of these movements by affirming the religious and cultural specificity of his fellow believers and compatriots. These engagements were intimately connected to the agrarian question in Bosnia-Herzegovina: Bašagić acted as a conservator, stressing that ownership of land was a historical right of the local beylicat, to which he belonged. During his lifetime he did not have the audience for which he would have wished; but the essential elements of his theses, despite their lack of scientific rigor, have flourished today.

    Description: The cowboy, as perhaps no other figure, has captured the imagination of North Americans for over a century. Before Owen Wister's publication of The Virginian in 1902, the image of the cowboy was essentially that of the dime novel - a rough, violent, one-dimensional drifter, or the stage cowboy variety found in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West show. Wister's novel was to transform, almost overnight, this image of the cowboy. Soon after its publication, Wister sent a copy, inscribed "To the hero from the author," to Everett Johnson, a cowboy from Virginia who had been a friend of Wister's in Wyoming in the 1880s. Johnson had migrated to Alberta by the 1890s, eventually settling in the Calgary area. Before his death in 1946, his daughter-in-law, Jean Johnson, transcribed Everett's stories of the old west and collected them into a manuscript, now on deposit in the Glenbow Archives. In The Cowboy Legend, John Jennings, building on Jean Johnson's work, details the evidence that Everett Johnson was the initial and prime inspiration for Wister's cowboy, and in the process shows that Johnson led a fascinating life in his own right. His memories of both the Wyoming and Alberta cattle frontiers provide insight into ranch life on both sides of the border, and the compelling parallel biographies of Johnson and Wister feature vignettes of legendary period figures such as Buffalo Bill Cody, Wild Bill Hickok, Wyatt Earp, and Butch Cassidy, not to mention the best man at Johnson's wedding, Henry Longabaugh, a.k.a. the Sundance Kid. With an impressive range of scholarship and archival research, Jennings melds this realistic study of the cowboy frontier with an intriguing account of Wister's subsequent creation of the cowboy mystique, aided by two close friends and perhaps somewhat unexpected collaborators, Frederic Remington and Theodore Roosevelt. As compulsively readable as it is informative, this unique contribution to western history and literature will be welcomed by fans and scholars alike.

    Description: Ce livre s’inscrit clans la série des recherches suscitées par l’enquête sur le personnel parlementaire de la Troisième République, entreprise par l’URA 1016 du CNRS, au sein du Centre d’histoire du xixe siècle qui asso­cie les Universités de Paris I et de Paris IV. Cet ouvrage porte sur une catégorie de sénateurs aujourd’hui oubliée : les inamovibles, nommés d’abord par l’Assemblée nationale, puis par le Sénat, conformément à la loi constitutionnelle du 24 février 1875. Jusqu’à la révision constitutionnelle de 1884, qui mit fin à ce mode de désignation, il y eut cent seize sénateurs inamovibles. Les diverses contributions réunies dans la première partie apportent des éléments de réflexion sur les origines sociales et la formation, les alliances et réseaux familiaux, les attitudes philosophiques et spirituelles, les liens avec le monde militaire, le barreau, le monde académique. Il fallait évo­quer leur enracinement provincial, leur place dans les conseils du gouver­nement, leur comportement politique grâce à quelques scrutins qui per­mettent au reste de décrire tendances et groupes dans le Sénat des débuts de la République. Enfin, les obsèques des sénateurs inamovibles et la mémoire qui les accompagne constituent comme le tombeau de ces « immortels » de la République. Les profils biographiques présentés ensuite trouveront sûrement l’attention de tous ceux qui s’intéressent aux élites socio-politiques de la France contemporaine. On découvre nombre de personnalités dont les débuts, non seulement professionnels mais politiques, datent de la monar­chie de Juillet, voire de la fin de la Restauration. Certaines de leurs exis­tences. et pas seulement celles des officiers de l’armée de terre ou de marine, sont marquées au coin du romanesque. Elles font revivre, comme en un éclair, l’histoire mouvementée de la France du xixe siècle, jalonnée par les révolutions, les changements de régime, les choix difficiles entre fidélité et ralliement.     Description: French Huguenots made enormous contributions to the life and culture of colonial New York during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Huguenot craftsmen were the city's most successful artisans, turning out unrivaled works of furniture which were distinguished by unique designs and arcane details. More than just decorative flourishes, however, the visual language employed by Huguenot artisans reflected a distinct belief system shaped during the religious wars of sixteenth-century France.In Fortress of the Soul, historian Neil Kamil traces the Huguenots' journey to New York from the Aunis-Saintonge region of southwestern France. There, in the sixteenth century, artisans had created a subterranean culture of clandestine workshops and meeting places inspired by the teachings of Bernard Palissy, a potter, alchemist, and philosopher who rejected the communal, militaristic ideology of the Huguenot majority which was centered in the walled city of La Rochelle. Palissy and his followers instead embraced a more fluid, portable, and discrete religious identity that encouraged members to practice their beliefs in secret while living safely—even prospering—as artisans in hostile communities. And when these artisans first fled France for England and Holland, then left Europe for America, they carried with them both their skills and their doctrine of artisanal security.Drawing on significant archival research and fresh interpretations of Huguenot material culture, Kamil offers an exhaustive and sophisticated study of the complex worldview of the Huguenot community. From the function of sacred violence and alchemy in the visual language of Huguenot artisans, to the impact among Protestants everywhere of the destruction of La Rochelle in 1628, to the ways in which New York's Huguenots interacted with each other and with other communities of religious dissenters and refugees, Fortress of the Soul brilliantly places American colonial history and material life firmly within the larger context of the early modern Atlantic world.

    Description: Comme des milliers de braves des armées tricolores entre 1792 et 1815, Théophile-Malo Corret de La Tour d’Auvergne est mort au champ d’honneur. Mais « premier grenadier des armées de la République », il fit partie de ceux qui se virent décerner la qualité de héros. Réputé comme savant et admiré pour ses vertus de son vivant même, il n’était pas, c’est vrai, un soldat commun. Ce livre ne consiste pas en une biographie du célébré. Son objet est sa célébration même, depuis la Révolution française jusqu’à la Grande Guerre. Pour cela, parmi les outils fournis par les sciences sociales il manie plus spécialement celui de l’admiration. Ainsi nous comprenons pourquoi la gloire du « petit héros » La Tour d’Auvergne n’a cessé de grandir durant tout le xixe siècle. Héros célébré par la « grande patrie », comme par sa « petite patrie », et par son régiment, La Tour d’Auvergne est aussi un cas à partir duquel la construction nationale à l’œuvre peut se voir et se comprendre. Ce cas permet également de décrire le phénomène social de l’admiration, si prégnant que la société dans laquelle il se développa est ici qualifiée de « société d’admiration ». La Tour d’Auvergne est aujourd’hui bien oublié. L’ouvrage cherche donc enfin à comprendre comment et pourquoi l’admiration pour les héros s’est amoindrie, a cessé, voire a transformé certains modèles d’hier en repoussoirs à déboulonner.

President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was paralyzed from the waist down, but he concealed the extent of his disability from a public that was never permitted to see him in a wheelchair. FDR's Secretary of State was old and frail, debilitated by a highly contagious and usually fatal disease that was as closely guarded a state secret as his wife's Jewish ancestry. The undersecretary was a pompous and aloof man who married three times but, when intoxicated, preferred sex with railroad porters, shoeshine boys, and cabdrivers. These three legendary figures—Franklin Roosevelt, Cordell Hull, and Sumner Welles—not only concealed such secrets for more than a decade but did so while directing United States foreign policy during some of the most perilous events in the nation's history. Irwin Gellman brings to light startling new information about the intrigues, deceptions, and behind-the-scenes power struggles that influenced America's role in World War II and left their mark on world events, for good or ill, in the half-century that followed. Gellman had unprecedented access to previously unavailable documents, including Hull's confidential medical records, unpublished manuscripts of Drew Pearson and R. Walton Moore, and Sumner Welles's FBI file. Mais de quoi parle-t-on au juste? « Je connais tel élu et il a le bras long, il pourra me trouver une place à la mairie! » Si la phrase est courante, quelles réalités et quels fantasmes recouvre-t-elle précisément ? Alors que le phénomène du clientélisme a déjà fait l’objet de plusieurs études en sociologie et sciences politiques, cette pratique originale a moins retenu l’attention des historiens du politique. Spécialiste de l’histoire politique française contemporaine, Julie Bour entend étudier les acteurs, causes, modalités et limites du clientélisme via une approche quantitative originale et inédite, reposant sur l’exploitation statistique de corpus importants de courriers de recommandation, dépassant parfois les milliers de lettres entre les élus et leurs administrés et portant sur des dossiers sensibles, symboliques ou plus prosaïques (emplois, décorations, service militaire, aide sociale, affaires communales, etc.). Elle concentre son analyse sur un espace test particulier qui est celui de la Lorraine et l’appréhende sur le temps long qui va de la IIIe République aux années 2000. Au travers d’études de cas portant sur des élus célèbres (Louis Jacquinot, Pierre Messmer, François Guillaume, Christian Pierret) ou plus anonymes (Jean Bernard, Jules Develle, André Savard) qui représentent l’ensemble des courants politiques, le clientélisme apparaît pour ce qu’il est réellement : une pratique très répandue (et non limité à un Sud méditerranéen arriéré), qui structure la vie politique locale, mobilise tout un réseau d’intercesseurs relais, crée des solidarités fines entre l’élu et les électeurs, et joue un rôle parfois déterminant dans l’élection et la longévité politique de certains parlementaires. Cette pratique, ancrée sur la durée, institutionnalisée au point d’être déculpabilisée, interroge la démocratie dans ses limites en termes de corruption et de clientélisme.

    Description: Cette recherche étudie les modalités d’approvisionnement de la ville de Venise en produits de la mer (poissons, crustacés et coquillages) au XVIIIe siècle, dans un système qui concerne à la fois des acteurs, des pratiques, des espaces et des modes de gouvernement. L’analyse prend comme point de départ les espèces, leurs lieux de croissance, les rythmes de production, puis l’exploitation du poisson qui devient une ressource alimentaire pour la ville. À Venise, l’ensemble des habitants, des patriciens aux membres du popolo les plus fragiles, consomme des produits de la mer quotidiennement et sous toutes leurs formes. Cette place remarquable du poisson dans l’alimentation a entraîné, chez les acteurs impliqués dans ce système, pêcheurs, marchands et gouvernants, d’intenses réflexions autour de la propriété, de la gestion, de l’exploitation et de la protection des espèces. L’étude se situe par conséquent à la croisée de plusieurs champs historiques (histoire environnementale, histoire sociale et histoire des institutions) et emprunte également certaines de ses approches à l’histoire économique et à l’histoire urbaine. L’enjeu est de déterminer comment se crée et se négocie un système de gestion et d’exploitation d’une ressource, impliquant des savoirs politiques, des savoirs techniques et des usages particuliers élaborés dans des milieux lagunaires et maritimes. Cette interaction est en pleine évolution au XVIIIe siècle, à une période où les mécanismes marchands et économiques sont soumis à des évolutions de conception profondes. Les ressources de la mer n’échappent pas à ces questionnements et la materia del pesce, expression utilisée par les magistrats vénitiens, devient un espace de négociation, mais également de lutte, entre les acteurs du système et les gouvernants dans la seconde moitié du XVIIIe siècle.

    Description: How the maternal image of the empress Julia Domna helped the Roman empire rule.Ancient authors emphasize dramatic moments in the life of Julia Domna, wife of Roman emperor Septimius Severus (193–211). They accuse her of ambition unforgivable in a woman, of instigating civil war to place her sons on the throne, and of resorting to incest to maintain her hold on power. In imperial propaganda, however, Julia Domna was honored with unprecedented titles that celebrated her maternity, whether it was in the role of mother to her two sons (both future emperors) or as the metaphorical mother to the empire. Imperial propaganda even equated her to the great mother goddess, Cybele, endowing her with a public prominence well beyond that of earlier imperial women. Her visage could be found gracing everything from state-commissioned art to privately owned ivory dolls. In Maternal Megalomania, Julie Langford unmasks the maternal titles and honors of Julia Domna as a campaign on the part of the administration to garner support for Severus and his sons. Langford looks to numismatic, literary, and archaeological evidence to reconstruct the propaganda surrounding the empress. She explores how her image was tailored toward different populations, including the military, the Senate, and the people of Rome, and how these populations responded to propaganda about the empress. She employs Julia Domna as a case study to explore the creation of ideology between the emperor and its subjects.
